Gadolinium (Gd) is a very potent neutron absorber that can potentially provide the nuclear criticality safety required for interim storage, transport, and final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. Gd could be incorporated into an alloy that can be fabricated into baskets to provide structural support, corrosion resistance, and nuclear criticality control. In particular, Gd alloyed with stainless steel has been identified as a material that may fulfill these functional requirements. However, no information is available in the open literature that describes the influence of Gd on the microstructure and resultant mechanical properties of stainless steels alloyed with Gd. Such information is vital for determination of the suitability of these types of alloys for the intended application. Characterization of Gd-stainless steel (Gd-SS) alloys is also necessary for an American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) material specification, subsequent code approval by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and regulatory approval by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for subsequent use by the nuclear industry. The Department of Energy National Spent Nuclear Fuel Program at Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory has commissioned Lehigh University and Sandia National Laboratories to characterize the properties of a series of Gd-SS alloys to assess their suitability for the spent fuel basket application. Preliminary microstructural characterization results are presented on Gd stainless steels. Small gas tungsten arc buttons were prepared by melting 316L stainless steel with 0.1 to 10 wt.% Gd. These samples were characterized by light optical and electron optical microscopy to determine the distribution of alloying elements and volume fraction of Gd-rich phase. The results acquired to date indicate that no Gd is dissolved in the austenite matrix. Instead, the Gd was present as an interdendritic constituent, and the amount of the Gd-rich constituent increased with nominal Gd concentration. The microstructure were similar to berated stainless steels in that each alloy system contains a hard secondary constituent dispersed in a ductile austenitic matrix. Microstructure-mechanical property correlations were therefore developed from previous work on berated stainless steels in order to guide selection of compositions of larger scale Gd-alloyed heats. In turn, these large-scale heats will form the basis for further investigations in which detailed microstructure, mechanical property, and corrosion resistance relationships will be developed.

This conference was held at Garching near Munich on June 18 - 20, 2001. Legal and political aspects were discussed, i.e. new national and international legislation and the implementation of EC regulations into German law, e.g. in the fields of waste dumping, incineration, and 'best technology'. Refuse-derived fuels are gone into, e.g. construction site waste, residues of the paper industry, plastic waste, sorted waste fractions, waste oil, animal meal, etc., as well as technologies and plants for co-combustion of refuse-derived fuels. Another section discussed 'classic' incinerators and their optimisation and innovation potential. Selected new concepts for furnaces, boilers, corrosion reduction and flue gas purification were discussed. Not least, the cost aspect is getting increasingly important. Benchmarking and the internet are addressed. The conference has become an important forum for producers, operators, planners and consultants, administrators and scientists in the field of thermal waste management. [German] Vom 18. bis 20. Juni 2001 fand in Garching bei Muenchen wieder die Fachtagung 'Thermische Abfallbehandlung' statt. Der rechtliche und politische Rahmen wird von den neuen nationalen und internationalen Gesetzen und Verordnungen gepraegt, vor allem durch die Umsetzung mehrerer europaeischer Richtlinien in deutsches Recht, beispielsweise zur Abfalldeponierung, zur Verbrennung von Abfaellen sowie zur bestverfuegbaren Technik. Ein grosser Themenblock ist dem Brennstoff aus Muell gewidmet, welcher bereits vor ueber zwanzig Jahren ein grosses Thema war. Mittlerweile scheinen Ersatz- und Sekundaerbrennstoffe fuer viele der Koenigsweg bei der Loesung der abfallwirtschaftlichen Probleme zu sein. Daher sind hier ausfuehrliche Informationen zu etlichen potenziellen Brennstoffen wie Baustellenabfaelle, Spuckstoffe aus der Papierindustrie, Kunststoffabfaelle, DSD-Sortierreste, Altoel, Tiermehl usw. zu finden. Fuer derartige Ersatzbrennstoffe stehen etablierte kommunale und industrielle Anlagen zur Mitverbrennung zur Verfuegung. Darueber hinaus sind etliche Unternehmen im Begriff, spezielle Heizwerke oder Heizkraftwerke fuer diese Brennstoffe zu errichten. Die klassischen Muellverbrennungsanlagen, also die Anlagen mit Rosttechnik, gehoeren damit jedoch keineswegs zum alten Eisen, im Gegenteil, sie weisen nach wie vor ein grosses Optimierungs- und Innovationspotenzial auf. Ausgewaehlte neue Konzepte fuer Feuerungen, Kessel, Korrosionsminderung und Rauchgasreinigung werden hier diskutiert. Nicht zuletzt gewinnen die Kosten in der kommunalen Abfallwirtschaft so auch bei der Abfallverbrennung seit Jahren an Bedeutung. Das Benchmarking ist dabei zu einem wichtigen Vergleichs- und Bewertungsinstrument geworden und das Internet wird die Moeglichkeit zukuenftig noch erweitern. Diese sechste Fachtagung ist fuer Hersteller und Betreiber, Planer und Berater sowie die Fachleute aus Verwaltung und Wissenschaft ein umfassendes Forum zur Thermischen Abfallbehandlung geworden.
