We propose the “Kiki-Bouba Challenge” (KBC) for the re- search and development of content-based music informa- tion retrieval (MIR) systems. This challenge is unencum- bered by several problems typically encountered in MIR research: insufficient data, restrictive copyrights, imper- fect ground...... truth, a lack of specific criteria for classes (e.g., genre), a lack of explicit problem definition, and irrepro- ducibility. KBC provides a limitless amount of free data, a perfect ground truth, and well-specifiable and meaningful characteristics defining each class. These ideal conditions are made...

  2. Phonological and orthographic influences in the bouba-kiki effect.

We examine a high-profile phenomenon known as the bouba-kiki effect, in which non-word names are assigned to abstract shapes in systematic ways (e.g. rounded shapes are preferentially labelled bouba over kiki). In a detailed evaluation of the literature, we show that most accounts of the effect point to predominantly or entirely iconic cross-sensory mappings between acoustic or articulatory properties of sound and shape as the mechanism underlying the effect. However, these accounts have tended to confound the acoustic or articulatory properties of non-words with another fundamental property: their written form. We compare traditional accounts of direct audio or articulatory-visual mapping with an account in which the effect is heavily influenced by matching between the shapes of graphemes and the abstract shape targets. The results of our two studies suggest that the dominant mechanism underlying the effect for literate subjects is matching based on aligning letter curvature and shape roundedness (i.e. non-words with curved letters are matched to round shapes). We show that letter curvature is strong enough to significantly influence word-shape associations even in auditory tasks, where written word forms are never presented to participants. However, we also find an additional phonological influence in that voiced sounds are preferentially linked with rounded shapes, although this arises only in a purely auditory word-shape association task. We conclude that many previous investigations of the bouba-kiki effect may not have given appropriate consideration or weight to the influence of orthography among literate subjects.

Since disabled persons increase with a progress of an aging society, while a care power decreases with a decrease in birth rate, development and practical use of the welfare equipment contributing to self-support of aged and handicapped persons, reduction of doctors' or therapists' burdens, and as a result, reduction of medical care costs are desirable. Among them, R and D and practical use are expected of the advanced welfare equipment and system based on human engineering technology contributing to improvement of lives of aged and handicapped persons, and support of nurses and cares of disabled persons. In fiscal 1998, on both human friendly care support intelligent equipment and home welfare equipment system, this project clarified essential technical issues based on the future view, selected some themes to be newly developed in the future, and surveyed and evaluated the details of their R and D concretely. For the former, 'heart disease diagnosis and treatment total support system,' and for the latter, 'body function rehabilitation support system' were surveyed. (NEDO)

Since Köhler's experiments in the 1920s, researchers have demonstrated a correspondence between words and shapes. Dubbed the "Bouba-Kiki" effect, these auditory-visual associations extend across cultures and are thought to be universal. More recently the effect has been shown in other modalities including taste, suggesting the effect is independent of vision. The study presented here tested the "Bouba-Kiki" effect in the auditory-haptic modalities, using 2D cut-outs and 3D models based on Köhler's original drawings. Presented with shapes they could feel but not see, sighted participants showed a robust "Bouba-Kiki" effect. However, in a sample of people with a range of visual impairments, from congenital total blindness to partial sight, the effect was significantly less pronounced. The findings suggest that, in the absence of a direct visual stimulus, visual imagery plays a role in crossmodal integration. Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    2011-03-01

We investigated whether there are reliable crossmodal associations between foods/flavours and words in neurologically normal individuals. Participants were given a range of foods to taste, and had to rate each one along a number of dimensions. These included scales anchored with the words "takete/maluma" and "bouba/kiki". The results highlight the existence of robust crossmodal associations between complex foods/flavours and words in normal (i.e., nonsynesthetic) individuals. For example, crisps (potato chips) and cranberry sauce are rated as being more "takete" than brie cheese, while mint chocolate is rated as more "kiki" than regular chocolate. On the basis of these results, we suggest that our brains can extract supramodal/conceptual properties from foods/flavours (just as has been demonstrated previously using auditory and visual stimuli) and meaningfully match them crossmodally. The possibility that this process is based on the global Gestalt of a food rather than on any specific sensory qualities is also discussed.

An investigational study was conducted on the research and development of an at-home welfare apparatus system. In this study, a stay experiment was carried out on whether aged or handicapped people can easily live in welfare houses into which at-home welfare apparatus was integrated, using high-tech at-home nursing apparatus systems (welfare techno house: WTH) which were installed at seven places in Japan based on `the development of a system supporting independent excretion.` In addition, the following were conducted: experiments on at-home welfare apparatus in terms of the evaluation of performance/operability/safety, physical physiology reactions, nursing burden/estimate of independence, two-way communication, examination of housing environments, etc. In WTH Chofu, a test on evaluating welfare apparatus was conducted by people with limbs paralysis and healthy case workers. In WTH Sapporo, by a working group studying biological information, examinations were made on the situation of standing up of healthy adults, old people and people with paralysis of one side of the body from various types of chairs, beds, wheel chairs, portable toilets and sitting down on them. An examination was also made on harmony with psychological function and physically adaptable function by a working group studying at-home nursing apparatus. 75 figs., 15 tabs.

  8. Bouba/Kiki in Touch: Associations Between Tactile Perceptual Qualities and Japanese Phonemes

Full Text Available Several studies have shown cross-modal associations between sounds and vision or gustation by asking participants to match pre-defined sound-symbolic words (SSWs, such as “bouba” or “kiki,” with visual or gustatory materials. Here, we conducted an explorative study on cross-modal associations of tactile sensations using spontaneous production of Japanese SSWs and semantic ratings. The Japanese language was selected, because it has a large number of SSWs that can represent a wide range of tactile perceptual spaces with fine resolution, and it shows strong associations between sound and touch. In the experiment, we used 120 everyday materials to cover basic material categories that could be associated with fundamental dimensions of tactile perception. Upon contact with these materials, participants expressed their tactile sensations by using Japanese SSWs, and at the same time, evaluated the tactile sensations by semantic differential scales using adjective pairs. Thanks to the variety of testing materials, we were able to demonstrate the existence of systematic associations between sounds and tactile fundamental perceptual dimensions in a more detailed and comprehensive way than ever done so before. In particular, we found that for vowels, positive tactile ratings were associated with the back vowel (/u/, while negative ratings were associated with the front vowels (/i/ and /e/. The central vowels (/o/ and /a/ were mainly associated with rough, hard, and dry feelings. Consonants were categorized based on vocal features and articulation. The category of the voiced consonants (e.g., /dz/ and /g/ corresponded to feelings of roughness, while that of voiceless consonants (e.g., /ʦ/, and /s/ corresponded to feelings of smoothness. The categories of the bilabial plosive (/p/ and /b/ and voiced alveolar nasal (/n/ consonants were mainly related to soft, sticky and wet feelings, while that of voiceless alveolar affricate (/ʦ/ and voiceless velar

In this study, we investigated the influence of vowels on sound–shape matching in toddlers, using four contrasting pairs of nonsense words differing in vowel sound (/i/ as in feet vs. /o/ as in boat and four rounded–jagged shape pairs. Crucially, we used reduplicated syllables (e.g., kiki vs. koko rather than confounding vowel sound with consonant context and syllable variability (e.g., kiki vs. bouba. Toddlers consistently matched words with /o/ to rounded shapes and words with /i/ to jagged shapes (p < 0.01. The results suggest that there may be naturally biased correspondences between vowel sound and shape.

The human GnRH receptor (GNRHR1) has a specific set of properties with physiological and pharmacological influences not appropriately modeled in laboratory animals or cell-based systems. To address this deficiency, we have generated human GNRHR1 knock-in mice and described their reproductive phenotype. Measurement of pituitary GNRHR1 transcripts from homozygous human GNRHR1 knock-in (ki/ki) mice revealed a severe reduction (7- to 8-fold) compared with the mouse Gnrhr1 in wild-type mice. ¹²⁵I-GnRH binding assays on pituitary membrane fractions corroborated reduced human GNRHR1 protein expression in ki/ki mice, as occurs with transfection of human GNRHR1 in cell lines. Female homozygous knock-in mice displayed normal pubertal onset, indicating that a large reduction in GNRHR1 expression is sufficient for this process. However, ki/ki females exhibited periods of prolonged estrous and/or metestrous and reduced fertility. No impairment was found in reproductive maturity or adult fertility in male ki/ki mice. Interestingly, the serum LH response to GnRH challenge was reduced in both knock-in males and females, indicating a reduced GNRHR1 signaling capacity. Small molecules targeting human GPCRs usually have poor activities at homologous rodent receptors, thus limiting their use in preclinical development. Therefore, we tested a human-specific GnRH1 antagonist, NBI-42902, in our mouse model and demonstrated abrogation of a GnRH1-induced serum LH rise in ki/ki mice and an absence of effect in littermates expressing the wild-type murine receptor. This novel model provides the opportunity to study the human receptor in vivo and for screening the activity of human-specific GnRH analogs.

Over the last decade, scientists working on the topic of multisensory integration, as well as designers and marketers involved in trying to understand consumer behavior, have become increasingly interested in the non-arbitrary associations (e.g., sound symbolism) between different sensorial attributes of the stimuli they work with. Nevertheless, to date, little research in this area has investigated the presence of these crossmodal correspondences in the tactile evaluation of everyday materials. Here, we explore the presence and nature of the associations between tactile sensations, the sound of non-words, and people's emotional states. Samples of cotton, satin, tinfoil, sandpaper, and abrasive sponge, were stroked along the participants' forearm at the speed of 5 cm/s. Participants evaluated the materials along several dimensions, comprising scales anchored by pairs of non-words (e.g., Kiki/Bouba) and adjectives (e.g., ugly/beautiful). The results revealed that smoother textures were associated with non-words made up of round-shaped sounds (e.g., Maluma), whereas rougher textures were more strongly associated with sharp-transient sounds (e.g., Takete). The results also revealed the presence of a number of correspondences between tactile surfaces and adjectives related to visual and auditory attributes. For example, smooth textures were associated with features evoked by words such as 'bright' and 'quiet'; by contrast, the rougher textures were associated with adjectives such as 'dim' and 'loud'. The textures were also found to be associated with a number of emotional labels. Taken together, these results further our understanding of crossmodal correspondences involving the tactile modality and provide interesting insights in the applied field of design and marketing.

Full Text Available Although the arbitrariness of language has been considered one of its defining features, studies have demonstrated that certain phonemes tend to be associated with certain kinds of meaning. A well-known example is the Bouba/Kiki effect, in which nonwords like bouba are associated with round shapes while nonwords like kiki are associated with sharp shapes. These sound symbolic associations have thus far been limited to nonwords. Here we tested whether or not the Bouba/Kiki effect extends to existing lexical stimuli; in particular, real first names. We found that the roundness/sharpness of the phonemes in first names impacted whether the names were associated with round or sharp shapes in the form of character silhouettes (Experiments 1a and 1b. We also observed an association between femaleness and round shapes, and maleness and sharp shapes. We next investigated whether this association would extend to the features of language and found the proportion of round-sounding phonemes was related to name gender (Analysis of Category Norms. Finally, we investigated whether sound symbolic associations for first names would be observed for other abstract properties; in particular, personality traits (Experiment 2. We found that adjectives previously judged to be either descriptive of a figuratively 'round' or a 'sharp' personality were associated with names containing either round- or sharp-sounding phonemes, respectively. These results demonstrate that sound symbolic associations extend to existing lexical stimuli, providing a new example of non-arbitrary mappings between form and meaning.

We examined whether such a cross-modal correspondence could also be found for human body motion. We transferred the body movements of speakers onto two-dimensional coordinates and created animated stick-figures based on this data. Then we invited people to judge these stimuli using the words takete-maluma, bouba-kiki, and several verbal descriptors that served as measures of angularity/smoothness. In addition to this we extracted the quantity of motion, the velocity of motion and the average angle between motion vectors from the coordinate data. Judgments of takete (and kiki were related to verbal descriptors of angularity, a high quantity of motion, high velocity and sharper angles. Judgments of maluma (or bouba were related to smooth movements, a low velocity, a lower quantity of motion and blunter angles. A forced-choice experiment during which we presented subsets with low and high rankers on our motion measures revealed that people preferably assigned stimuli displaying fast movements with sharp angles in motion vectors to takete and stimuli displaying slow movements with blunter angles in motion vectors to maluma. Results indicated that body movements share features with information inherent in words such as takete and maluma and that people perceive the body movements of speakers on the level of changes in motion direction (e.g., body moves to the left and then back to the right. Follow-up studies are needed to clarify whether impressions of angularity and smoothness have similar communicative values across different modalities and how this affects social judgments and person perception.

    2016-04-01

Full Text Available The E3 ubiquitin ligase Smurf1 targets the master regulator of osteoblast differentiation, Runx2, for degradation, yet the function of Smurf1, if any, during osteoblast differentiation in vivo is ill defined. Here, we show that Smurf1 prevents osteoblast differentiation by decreasing Runx2 accumulation in osteoblasts. Remarkably, mice harboring a substitution mutation at serine 148 (S148 in Smurf1 that prevents its phosphorylation by AMPK (Smurf1ki/ki display a premature osteoblast differentiation phenotype that is equally severe as that of Smurf1−/− mice, as well as a high bone mass, and are also hyperinsulinemic and hypoglycemic. Consistent with the fact that Smurf1 targets the insulin receptor for degradation, there is, in Smurf1ki/ki mice, an increase in insulin signaling in osteoblasts that triggers a rise in the circulating levels of osteocalcin, a hormone that favors insulin secretion. These results identify Smurf1 as a determinant of osteoblast differentiation during the development of bone formation and glucose homeostasis post-natally and demonstrate the necessity of S148 for these functions.

For the purpose of constructing new home welfare equipment systems of an energy effective use type, an investigational analysis was conducted of characteristics of the structure of houses considered of aged people, characteristics of the use of home welfare equipment, etc. As to the subject on space warming/cooling, it was found that the hour of stay-at-home of the aged tends to be longer, and the hour to be required for warming/cooling is longer, that the aged gradually lose senses regarding the peripheral environmental temperature, and the temperature to be considered should be at warmer/cooler levels, and that they are weak in heat shock, and the space of house where the temperature is uneven should be removed. Further, from the study in each welfare techno-house, possibilities were pointed out of further energy conservation in houses considered of the aged and home welfare equipment systems like the weight reduction of home welfare equipment systems and reduction of stand-by power, high air-tightness/high thermal insulation of houses for the aged, use of waste heat from air conditioners, introduction of solar energy to stand-by power and electrically-driven wheel chairs. 257 figs., 89 tabs.

In the effort to develop an authoring system for assistance programs, a self-training system to enhance home rehabilitation, a remote rehabilitation evaluation/diagnosis supporting system, and a communication assisting system, the systems developed in the preceding fiscal years were customized and, together with their operation manuals, introduced to seven hospitals and subjected to evaluation. The results were analyzed, and improvement centering on the ease of operation was carried out. Various development efforts were exerted to improve on what were strongly demanded. As for the aphasiac/caregiver interface, it was distributed to every hospital concerned. There was a demand for immediate introduction, and then the interface was developed into a practical tool to satisfy the demand. This enabled aphasiac patients to receive training stimuli effectively through various sense organs. (NEDO)

In order to achieve rationalization in energy use, surveys and studies were performed on structuring new at-home welfare device systems of effective energy utilization type, based on structural characteristics of residential houses arranged with considerations for elderly people, and operation characteristics of at-home welfare device systems. For the 'evaluation of daily, weekly and annual changes in energy use at care-taking sites', measurements were performed on cumulative power during operation standby and momentary power under no load and load in eight care-taking devices such as a care-taking Gatch bed, a motor-driven lift-up cooking table and a home elevator installed in the WTH Shizuoka, by using a house energy measuring device. The measurements verified that large power is consumed during standby operation. In developing the 'at-home welfare device systems that utilize energy more effectively', a solar beam measuring device was used to measure over an extended period of time the power generation amount of a solar beam power generation system installed in the WTH Shizuoka. Evaluation was given on the system as an emergency power supply for an emergency event, and consideration was given on the effectiveness of the system in the Shizuoka district where daily sunlight irradiation lasts long. Development was made on an inexpensive walking training device, on which effectiveness as a waling training device was evaluated by using a position sensor and a force plate. (NEDO)

Extradition should be into force whether the two States have made the former treaty related to or based to reciprocity principle. Sometimes, Requested State refuses to surrender the accused person to the Requesting State for many reasons, for example Adrian Kiki who escaped to Australia, but Indonesia could not reach him, although the two States have made a treaty related to. But sometimes, without the treaty of extradition, a State, such as Columbia, surrendered M.Nazaruddin to Indonesia. So basicly, the execution of extradition treaty is uneffective, because it depends on to the good will of the Requested State to do it.

Based on clinical presentation, glioblastoma (GBM) is stratified into primary and secondary types. The protein 53 (p53) pathway is functionally incapacitated in most GBMs by distinctive type-specific mechanisms. To model human gliomagenesis, we used a GFAP-HRas(V12) mouse model crossed into the p53ER(TAM) background, such that either one or both copies of endogenous p53 is replaced by a conditional p53ER(TAM) allele. The p53ER(TAM) protein can be toggled reversibly in vivo between wild-type and inactive conformations by administration or withdrawal of 4-hydroxytamoxifen (4-OHT), respectively. Surprisingly, gliomas that develop in GFAP-HRas(V12);p53(+/KI) mice abrogate the p53 pathway by mutating p19(ARF)/MDM2 while retaining wild-type p53 allele. Consequently, such tumors are unaffected by restoration of their p53ER(TAM) allele. By contrast, gliomas arising in GFAP-HRas(V12);p53(KI/KI) mice develop in the absence of functional p53. Such tumors retain a functional p19(ARF)/MDM2-signaling pathway, and restoration of p53ER(TAM) allele triggers p53-tumor-suppressor activity. Congruently, growth inhibition upon normalization of mutant p53 by a small molecule, Prima-1, in human GBM cultures also requires p14(ARF)/MDM2 functionality. Notably, the antitumoral efficacy of p53 restoration in tumor-bearing GFAP-HRas(V12);p53(KI/KI) animals depends on the duration and frequency of p53 restoration. Thus, intermittent exposure to p53ER(TAM) activity mitigated the selective pressure to inactivate the p19(ARF)/MDM2/p53 pathway as a means of resistance, extending progression-free survival. Our results suggest that intermittent dosing regimes of drugs that restore wild-type tumor-suppressor function onto mutant, inactive p53 proteins will prove to be more efficacious than traditional chronic dosing by similarly reducing adaptive resistance.

The behavior and properties of associated bodies were studied through measurement of surface tension considering acetone-soluble fraction relatively light among various solvent extracts of coal. In experiment, the acetone-soluble fraction was extracted from the substances extracted from Upper Freeport coal as standard specimen using the mixed solvent of carbon disulfide (CS2) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP), and it was dissolved into NMP after drying. Surface tension was measured by Wilhelmy method. The experimental results are as follows. Equilibrium surface tension is equal to the surface tension of pure solvent in a low concentration range of solution, and decreases with an increase in concentration approaching a fixed value at 0 in log concentration, nearly showing an S curve. Adsorption of species with non-polar aromatic ring of the acetone-soluble fraction on a solution surface probably decreases surface tension. Change with time in surface tension is observed which suggests fast initial reaction and slow subsequent reaction. 4 figs.

Eighty-seven years ago, Köhler reported that the majority of students picked the same answer in a quiz: Which novel word form ('maluma' or 'takete') went best with which abstract line drawing (one curved, one angular). Others have consistently shown the effect in a variety of contexts, with only one reported failure by Rogers and Ross. In the spirit of transparency, we report our own failure in the same journal. In our study, speakers of Syuba, from the Himalaya in Nepal, do not show a preference when matching word forms 'kiki' and 'bubu' to spiky versus curvy shapes. We conducted a meta-analysis of previous studies to investigate the relationship between pseudoword legality and task effects. Our combined analyses suggest a common source for both of the failures: 'wordiness' - We believe these tests fail when the test words do not behave according to the sound structure of the target language.

This paper describes thermal cutting equipment. Thermal cutting equipment is classified into gas, plasma and laser cutting equipment. Based on the level of automation, the gas cutting equipment has been developed in the order of manual, automatic, eye-tracer, and NC cutters. For recent eye-tracer, paper pattern is inputted in a computer and repeatedly traced. For NC cutting equipment, automatic gas flow rate setting device and sensor for tracing nozzle height are installed. Oxygen plasma cutter is used for cutting soft steel materials. Simplified systems with current below 100 A are mainly used. High-speed cutting is conducted by NC control. Problems of life-time of electrode tips, load of workers, cutting performance, and penetration at corners have been solved. For laser cutter, NC control is also adopted. Since there are no short life-time consumables and conditions can be automatically set, the laser cutter has been put into practice as unmanned equipment. Problems of cutting speed and processing speed have been solved. Gas cutting with multi-blowpipes and unmanned operation of laser cutting are most useful for reducing the cost. 2 figs., 3 tabs.

  13. Phosphorylation of CRMP2 by Cdk5 Regulates Dendritic Spine Development of Cortical Neuron in the Mouse Hippocampus

    2016-01-01

Full Text Available Proper density and morphology of dendritic spines are important for higher brain functions such as learning and memory. However, our knowledge about molecular mechanisms that regulate the development and maintenance of dendritic spines is limited. We recently reported that cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5 is required for the development and maintenance of dendritic spines of cortical neurons in the mouse brain. Previous in vitro studies have suggested the involvement of Cdk5 substrates in the formation of dendritic spines; however, their role in spine development has not been tested in vivo. Here, we demonstrate that Cdk5 phosphorylates collapsin response mediator protein 2 (CRMP2 in the dendritic spines of cultured hippocampal neurons and in vivo in the mouse brain. When we eliminated CRMP2 phosphorylation in CRMP2KI/KI mice, the densities of dendritic spines significantly decreased in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons in the mouse brain. These results indicate that phosphorylation of CRMP2 by Cdk5 is important for dendritic spine development in cortical neurons in the mouse hippocampus.

  14. [Role of Visiting Nursing Care in Japanese Home Healthcare].

    2018-02-01

Taiwan's rapidly aging society is expected to make it a super-aged society in 2026. By 2060, people aged 65 or older will account for 40% of the population, a ratio that will approximate that in Japan. In Japan, the elderly population was 27.3% in 2016. By 2025, when the baby-boomers become 75 years old in Japan, issues of long-term care and end-of-life care will be more important and challenging. Since 1976, more Japanese have died in hospital settings than in home settings. Although the percentage of people dying at home increased slightly to 12.7% in 2016, after the recent introduction and promotion of home healthcare, Japan will face a significant challenge to deal with the healthcare 'tsunami' of high natural death rates, which is expected to impose a heavy death burdened on society by 2040, when the death rate is expected to reach 1,670,000/year. Therefore, the Japanese authorities have begun to promote the Community-based Integrated Care System, in which home healthcare and visiting nursing play crucial roles. This article summarizes the historical trend and current situation of visiting nursing in Japan. Japan uses a hybrid payment system for visiting nursing that is financially supported both through private medical insurance policies and Kaigo insurance (Japanese long-term care insurance). The total of 8613 visiting nursing stations that were active in community settings in 2016 cooperated with 14,000 support clinics for home healthcare and cared for 570,000 patients in home settings. We believe that visiting nursing will play an important role in home healthcare in Taiwan in the future.

The superconducting magnet energy storage (SMES) system has a function by which magnetic energy is stored in a superconducting coil without loss and discharged very rapidly into the power line when needed. The fault current limiter has a function by which transport current is passed without impedance and excessive fault current is restricted by generating large impedance in an emergency. These are the functions of new power equipment, which can not be realized by the conventional equipment. In the small-scale SMES project, Toshiba has fabricated 100 kWh-class element coils and 1 kWh/1 MW modules as the first step of practical application for power system control. For the superconducting fault current limiter, Toshiba has developed a 6.6 kV-1 kA class fault current limiter without supplying cooling medium such as helium, and limiting tests of fault current have been successfully conducted. Through the long-term tests of element coils for SMES and the system interconnection tests of module-type SMES, it is expected that the technological development for practical application is accelerated. 4 refs., 7 figs., 3 tabs.

Zhang, Qi; Kosaka, Michitaka; Shirahada, Kunio; Yabutani, Takashi

This paper proposes a new framework for B to B collaboration process based on a concept of service. Service value, which gives users satisfaction for provided services, depends on the situation, user characteristics, and user objectives in seeking the service. Vargo proposed Service Dominant Logic (SDL), which determines service value according to “value in use”. This concept illustrates the importance of the relationship between the service itself and its situation. This relationship is analogous to electro-magnetic field theory in physics. We developed the concept of service fields to create service value based on an analogy of the electro-magnetic field. By applying this concept to B to B collaboration, a model of service value co-creation in the collaboration can be formulated. Then, the collaboration can be described by 4 steps of KIKI model (Knowledge sharing related to service system, Identification of service field, Knowledge creation for new service idea, Implementation of service idea). As its application to B to B collaboration, the energy saving service business is reported to demonstrate the validity of the proposed collaboration model. This concept can be applied to make a collaboration process effective.

The Engineering Test Satellite-VI is a large composite test satellite weighing two tons to perform different communication experiments. Adoption of the multi-beam satellite communication system has made possible to increase the transmission capacity, reduce the sizes of earth stations, and utilize frequencies more effectively. This paper describes the configuration of the relaying devices mounted thereon, the newly developed circuit technologies, and their reliability. The multi-beam satellite communication system mounts a number of transponders, with the frequency bands used divided into the 2.6/2.5 GHz band between the moving body and the satellite, the 6/4 GHz band for the channels between the earth stations and the satellite, and the 30/20 GHz band for the fixed communications. These arrangements were intended to achieve large size reduction as a result of applying the integrated circuit technology. The transmitters and the receivers corresponding to each beam are connected by using the satellite switches (16 inputs {times} 12 outputs). The parts used were general purpose ones rather than those specified in the MIL standards because of their number having reached so huge. Their reliability was ensured by long-term burn-in operations. 5 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab.

Economic crisis in Asia and its influences on Middle Eastern economy are explained based on statistics. In Asian countries domestic energy demand has increased rapidly with recent high rate of economic growth for a background. Crisis on currency and finance originated in Thailand in the second half of 1997 has spread to neighboring countries of Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippine and Republic of Korea, then economic depression and confusion has propagated all over Asia, and decrease in oil demands has caused sudden drop of oil price, which has an important effect upon economy of oil producing countries of Middle East. Drastic decrease in oil and gas income has resulted in downward modification of budget, cut down of expenditure and reexamination of investment projects, including suspension. Statistical data were shown on trades with Asian countries, effects of sudden drop in oil price in Iran and Saudi arabia and its deficit in finance. Recovery of Asian economy being slow, sharp increase in demand for oil and turn over of oil price can't be expected, and it seems that oil producing countries, who have economic structure of depending much on export of oil products such as crude oil, petroleum products and natural gas, will stay in distress for the time being. This paper views development of consumer devices for business use at Fuji Electric. While the company is working mainly on domestic market placing automatic vending machines as the main item, it has faced with maturing of the market and large fall in sales price, and had to struggle with intensified competition during 1998. The major assignments therefrom were how to maintain and expand the automatic vending machine locations, reduce total cost including the operation cost, and respond to environmental harmony and social needs. In order to respond flexibly to the remarkably expanding market for 500-mL PET bottle drinks and diversification of bottle styles, the company has developed racks that can vend square bottles. Enhancement was made on energy conservation, noise and size reduction, cleanability, and maintainability. Works have been done on cup automatic vending machines to reduce total cost and increase consumers` buying motivation. A new cup mixing machine has been developed. This makes it possible to sell diverse kinds of drinks and improve taste. Improvements were made on food service devices for refreshments, beverages, and draft beer, and devices for cold food chains. Tri-n-butyltin (TBT) has long been considered as the most toxic among organotins, especially to membrane systems. The partially dealkylated derivative di-n-butyltin (DBT) has up to now received poor attention and, whenever considered, shown to be less toxic than TBT except on the immune system. The present kinetic approach evidences that both TBT and DBT in vitro inhibit the Mg-ATPase in mussel digestive gland mitochondria by a different mechanism. DBT even displays a higher efficiency than TBT (IC(50)=0.32 μM for TBT vs. 0.19 μM for DBT) in inhibiting the enzyme hydrolytic activity. Differently from TBT which at high concentrations (>1 μM) apparently decreases the oligomycin-sensitivity of the Mg-ATPase, DBT at any concentration tested does not affect the oligomycin sensitivity. TBT probably binds to F(0), either in the form of free enzyme or of enzyme-substrate complex (Ki=K'i), acting as non-competitive inhibitor with respect to the ATP substrate. Conversely DBT, which acts as uncompetitive inhibitor of ATP and as competitive inhibitor of Mg(2+) cofactor, may bind strongly to F(1) subunit, thus preventing ATP hydrolysis. The Mg-ATPase inhibition by both organotins warns against a potential threat to crucial cell energy metabolism processes even after years from contamination and partial TBT debutylation. Full Text Available This article studies the industrial and aesthetic dynamics of transnational film remakes. If by «transnational remake» we understand that which «consists in making again a film in a different national context from the original one» (Berthier, 2007, p. 338, this research analyses both the production and circulation strategies and the narrative adaptation tactics involved in the remake process from a transnational perspective. In order to do so, we will examine the films ¿Quién mató a Bambi? (Santi Amodeo, 2013, remake of the Mexican film Matando Cabos (Alejandro Lozano, 2004 and Kiki, love to love (Paco León, 2016, a version of the Australian The Little Death (Josh Lawson, 2014. These cases operate as examples of adaptation processes in the Spanish context as well as tokens of remake fluxes beyond Hollywood. Attention to these films allows us to consider the existence of a potential transnational model of producing film remakes, while attending to the complex network of agents at play in buying and selling remake rights. Finally, the article reflects on the importance of industrial and academic uses of concepts such as «auteur», «film genre» or «national cinema», all of them key categories within industrial and aesthetic dynamics of contemporary film remakes.

Ionizing radiation (IR) is a well-known risk factor for papillary thyroid cancer, and it has been reported to deregulate microRNA expression, which is important to thyroid carcinogenesis. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of IR on microRNA expression profile of the normal thyroid cell line (FRTL-5 CL2), as well as its effect on radiosensitivity of thyroid cancer cell lines, especially the human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cell line (8505c). The global microRNA expression profile of irradiated FRTL-5 CL2 cells (5 Gy X-ray) was characterized, and data were confirmed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction evaluating the expression of rno-miR-10b-5p, rno-miR-33-5p, rno-miR-128-1-5p, rno-miR-199a-3p, rno-miR-296-5p, rno-miR-328a-3p, and rno-miR-541-5p in irradiated cells. The miR-199a-3p and miR-10b-5p targets were validated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, Western blot, and luciferase target assays. The effects of miR-199a-3p and miR-10b-5p on DNA repair were determined by evaluating the activation of the protein kinases ataxia-telangiectasia mutated, ataxia telangiectasia, and Rad3-related and the serine 39 phosphorylation of variant histone H2AX as an indirect measure of double-strand DNA breaks in irradiated FRTL-5 CL2 cells. The impact of miR-10b-5p on radiosensitivity was analyzed by cell counting and MTT assays in FRTL-5 CL2, Kras-transformed FRTL-5 CL2 (FRTL KiKi), and 8505c cell lines. The results reveal that miR-10b-5p and miR-199a-3p display the most pronounced alterations in expression in irradiated FRTL-5 CL2 cells. Dicer1 and Lin28b were validated as targets of miR-10b-5p and miR-199a-3p, respectively. Functional studies demonstrate that miR-10b-5p increases the growth rate of FRTL-5 CL2 cells, while miR-199a-3p inhibits their proliferation. Moreover, both of these microRNAs negatively affect homologous recombination repair, reducing activated ataxia-telangiectasia mutated and Rad3-related protein levels

The purpose of the project is to develop a prototype system which monitors the health conditions of the aged living alone by measuring his/her electronic cardiograms at sleep and the activity of movement at daytime which are gathered by telephone lines. The practicability of the system is also verified. After our newly developed health monitoring system was applied for one year in four people over age 80, this system is useful to monitor both ECG during night and the daily activity at home of the aged living alone for long term without being aware. In each subject, a unique pattern of ECG waveform and the daily activity at home was found. Since the individual activity was fairly stable throughout the year, we were able to point out the unusual days by comparing the daily activity pattern with the reference pattern and analysis the reason. As to the clinical problem, we called one subject to come to see a doctor after we found temporary ventricular arrhythmia in his record. On the occasion of unusual activity, we called the subject and/or his/her neighbors and found a health problem. Depending on the response to the call, the system administrator took an appropriate action like informing the relatives or making a visit. (NEDO)

Full Text Available The aim of the present study is to preliminarily investigate the antimelanogenesis effect of Inonotus obliquus extracts by cell-free mushroom tyrosinase assay. It was found that petroleum ether and n-butanol extracts might contain unknown potential tyrosinase inhibitors, while its ethyl acetate extract might contain some unknown accelerators. Six compounds were isolated and their structures were identified by interpretation of NMR data and nicotinic acid was first discovered in Inonotus obliquus. In cells testing, betulin and trametenolic acid decreased tyrosinase activity and melanin content, while inotodiol and lanosterol significantly increased tyrosinase activity and melanin content, showing an AC⁡50 of 9.74 and 8.43 μM, respectively. Nicotinie acid, 3β,22,25-trihydroxy-lanosta-8-ene, had a little or no effect on tyrosinase. Betulin exhibited a mode of noncompetitive inhibition with a KI=KIS of 0.4 μM on tyrosinase activity showing an IC50 of 5.13 μM and being more effective than kojic acid (6.43 μM, and trametenolic acid exhibited a mode of mixed inhibition with a KI of 0.9 μM, KIS of 0.5 μM, and an IC50 of 7.25 μM. We proposed betulin and trametenolic acid as a new candidate of potent tyrosinase inhibitors and inotodiol and lanosterol as accelerators that could be used as therapeutic agent.

    1986-01-01

The mechanism of inactivation of human leukocyte elastase (HLE) by the chloromethyl ketone MeOSuc-Ala-Ala-Pro-Val-CH 2 Cl was investigated. The dependence of the first-order rate constant for inactivation on concentration of chloromethyl ketone is hyperbolic and suggests formation of a reversible Michaelis complex prior to covalent interaction between the enzyme and inhibitor. However, the observed Ki value is 10 microM, at least 10-fold lower than dissociation constants for complexes formed from interaction of HLE with structurally related substrates or reversible inhibitors, and suggests that Ki is a complex kinetic constant, reflecting the formation and accumulation of both the Michaelis complex and a second complex. It is proposed that this second complex is a hemiketal formed from attack of the active site serine on the carbonyl carbon of the inhibitor. The accumulation of this intermediate may be a general feature of reactions of serine proteases and chloromethyl ketones derived from specific peptides and accounts for the very low Ki values observed for these reactions. The solvent deuterium isotope effect (SIE) on the inactivation step (ki) is 1.58 +/- 0.07 and is consistent with rate-limiting, general-catalyzed attack of the active site His on the methylene carbon of the inhibitor with displacement of chloride anion. The general catalyst is thought to be the active site Asp. In contrast, the SIE on the second-order rate constant for HLE inactivation, ki/Ki, is inverse and equals 0.64 +/- 0.05

The environment around medical treatment in Japan is changing greatly in recent years, because of aging of the population, increase in life habit diseases, and progress in medical science and technologies. In addition, the needs of people are on the trend of diversification. Furthermore, as a result of the information communication field gaining remarkable power, people can obtain information in various forms, and are acquiring chances of learning various kinds of knowledge about medical treatment. Thus, scenes to respond to demands of patients are increasing more than ever in medical activities. On the other hand, works and conversion in providing efficient medical services are sought because of pressures on medical finance. Therefore, the 'medical and welfare device development project' was launched in fiscal 1994, wherein NEDO has been promoting the research and development jointly with private business entities. In fiscal 1999, assignments in important technologies will be made clear taking the future into the sight on three themes in two fields of developing low invasive operation systems, and comprehensively developing artificial organ technologies. Themes to be developed newly in the future will be selected, and the contents of the research and development thereon and the ways it should be will be investigated, evaluated and discussed specifically. This paper outlines present state of the feeding system in the light access system in consideration of backup in case of home power failure. In the optical communication, equipment with bilateral conversion function for light and electricity has to be installed both on communication service side and home side. Outline of the light access system and equipment requiring backup are shown. The following items are explained: main types of the light access system, such as FTTC (fiber to the curb), FTTP (fiber to the pole), FTTH (fiber to the home) and HFC (hybrid fiber coax), and the feeding system; problems on feeding system for the light access system. Key elements of ONU (optical network unit) for FTTH and construction of the ONU power source are illustrated. The ONU power source is composed of a backup power supply unit and main body supply unit. Backup power is indispensable to the ONU and analog telephones: output is supplied by the backup batteries in power failure. For miniaturization of the backup power source, power supply circuits and backup batteries have to be miniaturized simultaneously. History of miniaturization is explained on the experimental models. 6 refs., 7 figs., 1 tab.

In this study, we report on the synthesis, kinetic characterisation, and application of a novel biotinylated and active site-directed inactivator of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV). Thus, the dipeptide-derived proline diphenyl phosphonate NH(2)-Glu(biotinyl-PEG)-Pro(P)(OPh)(2) has been prepared by a combination of classical solution- and solid-phase methodologies and has been shown to be an irreversible inhibitor of porcine DPP-IV, exhibiting an over all second-order rate constant (k(i)/K(i)) for inhibition of 1.57 x 10(3) M(-1) min(-1). This value compares favourably with previously reported rates of inactivation of DPP-IV by dipeptides containing a P(1) proline diphenyl phosphonate grouping [B. Boduszek, J. Oleksyszyn, C.M. Kam, J. Selzler, R.E. Smith, J.C. Powers, Dipeptide phophonates as inhibitors of dipeptidyl peptidase IV, J. Med. Chem. 37 (1994) 3969-3976; B.F. Gilmore, J.F. Lynas, C.J. Scott, C. McGoohan, L. Martin, B. Walker, Dipeptide proline diphenyl phosphonates are potent, irreversible inhibitors of seprase (FAPalpha), Biochem, Biophys. Res. The utilisation of this probe for the detection of both purified dipeptidyl peptidase IV and the disclosure of a dipeptidyl peptidase IV-like activity from a clinical isolate of Porphyromonas gingivalis, using established electrophoretic and Western blotting techniques previously developed by our group, is also demonstrated.

Most of information devices used in the business field use keyboards for the inputting measure, but keyboards are rather awkward for personal use. In contrast to this, the pen input method which everybody can use easily is a product of the latest development. In this articles, on-line handwritten letter recognition is roughly explained which is the basic technique of pen input. Pen input has a demerit that its letter inputting speed is slow, but has much more merits that Chinese ideographs can be directly input, figures, handwritten memoranda, etc. are treated likewise, the device itself can be made compact and no noise is made. The on-line letter recognition methods now used practically can be roughly divided into the pattern matching method and the basic stroke method. Each of them has its own merits and demerits. For the current on-line handwritten letter recognition, the condition is necessary to handwritten a letter in the square style (kaisho) and carefully within the framework for letter entry upon writing, and for this arrangement, input is performed through the work processes of pretreatment/feature extraction, stroke recognition, letter comparison, detail discrimination, and after-treatment. 3 refs., 7 figs.

Described herein are the results of the FY1994 research program for research on advanced solar components as part of research and development of solar thermal energy. The catalyst for liquid-film reactions is prepared, and the flask tests are conducted as the preliminary experiments for development of the reactor in which 2-propanol is fallen in liquid film over the catalyst dispersed to accelerate its decomposition. It is decomposable when fallen in liquid film even in the presence of 35% of acetone. The catalyst of ruthenium carried by activated coal is used to produce 2-propanol under an exothermic condition from acetone and hydrogen. Diisopropyl ether and 4-methyl-2-pentanone are produced as by-products, when the reactor tube is kept at 140 to 200{degree}C at the external wall, diminishing as temperature is increased. There is a temperature differential of 20 to 30{degree}C in the reactor tube between the center axis and external wall. 3 figs.

This paper is the material distributed in the medical and welfare device session held under the auspices of NEDO in September 2000. Diversification of needs in the medical and welfare areas and handling of age advancement are the growing issue. NEDO is putting efforts toward enhancement of quality of life (QOL) and realization of the nation with great life by providing high-quality and high-efficiency medical and welfare services. The NEDO's efforts cover the areas of treating adult diseases such as cancers and cardiac diseases whose seriousness is growing, early diagnoses of diseases, medical treatment with low invasion, elderly people helping, reduction of helpers' burden, reduction of handicaps to elderly people and mentally and physically handicapped persons, and assistance to participation in the society. To achieve these goals, NEDO is implementing the following four projects: research and development of medical and welfare device technologies, researches of medical science and engineering collaboration type, and promotion of developing welfare techno-systems and practical application of welfare appliances. Developments are being made toward practical application of medical and welfare devices with excellent safety and convenience, of low cost and high performance. The session gave the keynote addresses related to medical treatment and prevention of brain diseases; brain, the universe and MRI (the world of mind as seen in images), and high-tech medical treatments to protect brain (challenge to brain that starts now). With an objective to further improve efficiency of power demand by office automation devices and suppress increase in the power demand, investigations were carried out on the actual power consumption by office automation devices, and discussions were given on energy saving effects in the office automation devices. In the investigations, measurements were conducted for small offices as the subject thereof with regard to electric power consumed by such presentation tools and their peripheral devices as personal computers, word processors, copying machines, facsimile machines, electronic whiteboards and overhead projectors. Power consumption particularly in a standby condition was also investigated. As a result of the investigations, the following characteristics were revealed: the number of office automation devices used to deal with the Energy Star is increasing rapidly; power consumption believed to have been reduced by the Energy Star transferring to lower power consumption is estimated to be 3% in average for personal computers, 26% for copying machines, and 68% for facsimile machines; and while facsimile machines are left in operating condition for 24 hours, their operation rate at night is very low, wherein there is a large room for saving energy in this time band. 65 figs., 21 tabs.

The new generation of Japanese is facing an aging society: the number of young people is decreasing dramatically, while the number of elderly is increasing. Consequently, care for the elderly has become a big problem. One particular problem area we`ve investigated is the use of unclean mattresses by the bedridden elderly. These mattresses provide an all too excellent environments for the growth of microbes. We measured the density of microbes on the cover of mattresses at 775cfu/cm{sup 2} and in the bed filling at 136cfu/g. The dominant species of microbes were MRSA and Bacillus. We used MRSA, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli as biological indicators and tested whether our system using ozone-ion fumigants was applicable for sterilization of mattresses. The survival ratio of MRSA were 10{sup -8} {approx} 10{sup -9}, 10{sup -7} {approx} 10{sup -8} for B. subtilis and below 10{sup -8} for E. coli. These experiments made it clear that our system is applicable for sterilization of the mattresses used by bedfast elderly. (author)

The field of concrete cooperation, method of R and D, and business, environment to support the project, and system to promote the project were studied for the research under international cooperation through investigating the trend and organization of R and D of the medical/welfare appliances at home and abroad. Projects were then proposed. In the project for collecting/analyzing the trace quantity of blood, the anomaly is inspected at a molecular level from the collected trace quantity of blood to make the biochemical inspection painless for the patients suffering from infectious symptom or disease of adults. In the project for the high-accuracy and high-function measurement without invading the diseased part of living body, the configuration and metabolic function are measured by nuclear magnetic resonance to early detect the symptom of Alzheimer and other different obstinate diseases. In the operation support system project with three-dimensional images of living body, the three-dimensional information is obtained, by X-ray CT or MRI, about the diseased part of living tissue. Upon the exact determination of its location, the disease is cured. Besides, the monitoring systemproject was proposed for the old people`s safety against dementia. The human care robot project was also done. 56 refs., 11 figs., 15 tabs.

In connection with the international joint research project of medical welfare, a report was made on the results of the investigation conducted in 1998 concerning the technology of overseas medical welfare equipment. In the investigation of china, observation was made on the actual state of the representative medial institutions, with opinions exchanged. Obsolete equipment and old technology are the present state in China, which is strongly desirous of exchanging information with Japan. In Taiwan, being full of venture spirit, an ultrasonic thermal treatment apparatus and an ultrasonic echo device have been produced for example. In Europe, an observation tour was conducted on a German manipulator and process robot while an investigative visit and exchange of opinions were made on the living environment and facilities in Italian training center for physically handicapped persons. Japan's self-supporting and assisting system for excretion attracted many questions and comments. In the investigation in the U.S., views were exchanged concerning '{sup 13}C-MRS device for non-invasion brain metabolic measurement' in research institutions such as universities. A machine developed in Japan received a high evaluation in that {sup 13}C spectrum was obtained from a substantial depth. (NEDO)

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as flame retardants in many different polymers, resins and substrates. Due to their widespread production and use, their high binding affinity to particles, and their lipophilic properties, several PBDE congeners can bioaccumulate in the environment. As a result, PBDEs and their hydroxylated metabolites (OH-PBDEs) have been detected in humans and various wildlife samples, such as birds, seals, and whales. Furthermore, certain OH-PBDEs and their methoxylated derivatives (MeO-PBDEs) are natural products in the marine environment. Recently, our laboratory focused on the possible effects on steroidogenesis of PBDEs and OH-PBDEs, e.g. in the human adrenocortical carcinoma (H295R) cell line indicating that some OH-PBDEs can significantly influence steroidogenic enzymes like CYP19 (aromatase) and CYP17. In the present study, human placental microsomes have been used to study the possible interaction of twenty two OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs with aromatase, the enzyme that mediates the conversion of androgens into estrogens. All OH-PBDE derivates showed significant inhibition of placental aromatase activity with IC(50) values in the low micromolar range, while the MeO-PBDEs did not have any effect on this enzyme activity. Enzyme kinetics studies indicated that two OH-PBDEs, 5-hydroxy-2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (5-OH-BDE47) and 6-hydroxy-2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (6-OH-BDE47), had a mixed-type inhibition of aromatase activity with apparent K(i)/K(i)' of 7.68/0,02 microM and 5.01/0.04 microM respectively. For comparison, some structurally related compounds, a dihydroxylated polybrominated biphenyl, which is a natural product (2,2'-dihyroxy-3,3',5,5'-tetrabromobiphenyl (2,2'-diOH-BB80)) and its non-bromo derivative were also included in the study. Again inhibition of aromatase activity could be measured, but their potency was significantly less than those observed for the OH-PBDEs. These results show that a

Research and development of a lavatory training system is carried out to enable bed-ridden aged people to evacuate unaided and thereby to elevate their consciousness of self-reliance. The developed system consists of a multi-functional bed with a built-in transfer unit and a movement assisting system. The multi-functional bed consists of a device that automatically transfers the patient abed to a position on the bedside portable toilet, a device that is remotely controlled to change the posture of the patient from the in-bed state to a seated state, and an audio-visual system that encourages the patient into self-reliance. The movement assisting system enables a patient, who needs people's help in rising from the bed and in walking to the lavatory, to stand up, sit down, and walk, all unaided. The system has undergone field tests at 6 locations in hospitals, public facilities, and residential houses. The result is that for people of Category III it is almost certain that they can travel safely thanks to the system. The system is again evaluated high in barrier-free residential environments. For the welfare equipment technologies, they visited the research institutes and facilities in UK and Germany, among others, to find that the European countries place more emphasis on researches to meet the needs than on advancing the equipment itself. For the medical treatment equipment, they visited the bio-research institutes in Europe for exchanging information on post-genome and tissue engineering. The European countries are behind USA in research fund and manpower for bio-technology and bio-medical, although making great efforts with much expectation on these areas. In Japan, there is so far accumulation of high level mechatronics technology and it is thought that there is possible to develop a system to fulfill such needs. In this system, equipment has deep connection with human being and natural coexistence between the equipment and human being is most necessary. Accordingly, development and practical use of walking practicing machine used for elderly people, walking support system, daily life work support system and so forth are expected by making successful in practice the coexistence functions of high level robot/mechatronics technology and machine/man. The purpose of the project is to establish the physiological sensing technique in objective measurement of the various mental stress caused by the operation or the movement of machines, aiming at designing the optimal interfaces in man-machine system. Subjective quantities and physiological responses are measured, under the stresser of five different conditions, such as a monotonous task, a task which causes tension, and a motion of a robot which causes fear. BP, ECG, and are measured as Physiological items. More precisely, the variation in systolic pressure, RRI of heartbeat or LF/HF value obtained by its spectrum analysis, and the power spectrum of a wave or CNV area derived from spectrum analysis of EGG, are obtained for each item. The aim is to develop a method of processing oxygen concentration distribution in human organs into an image by computed tomography using near infrared rays capable of transmitting through living tissues. Since the photoabsorption spectra of hemoglobin etc. in blood vary according to the degree of their oxidation, an oxygen concentration level is determined by measuring the magnitude of the variation. In the imaging method named in the title, the object is irradiated with picosecond-level near infrared pulses from all directions successively, the pulses after transmission through the object are measured at all directions at a picosecond-level time resolution, and the distribution of pulse scattering and absorption characteristics are subjected to algorithmic calculation, the outcome is converted into oxygen concentration levels, and an image is obtained. A 64-channel time resolution measurement system is constructed, and is applied to living tissue models (phantoms) and animals, and an image is obtained and evaluated. On the basis of the result, a patient is examined for clinical evaluation, and an image reflecting the distribution of variations in hemoglobin oxygen concentration is obtained for the head of the adult patient. A spatial resolution of 1cm is achieved in case of a phantom 10cm in diameter. In the case of 64 channels, measurement takes approximately 20 minutes and mapping image data measurement takes approximately 7 minutes. (NEDO)

Results of the studies for evaluating economic efficiency of these apparatuses and the effects of their introduction indicate that the promising apparatuses for eventual commercialization include superconducting cables, current limiters, field power generators, transformers and flywheels. The superconducting cables are expected to greatly reduce losses and hence CO2 emissions. The superconducting current limiters are promising means to control short-circuit current increase in the trunk power systems in which they are used. The superconducting transformers are expected to reduce losses and hence CO2 emissions. The efforts center on techniques for optimizing the designing process of the system-on-chip (SoC) which assumes the most important part in the technology involved. An SoC is a system in which most of the system-constituting functions are integrated on a single chip, whose design is growing increasingly difficult to prepare because its circuitry containing complicated functions is growing larger in scale at an annual rate of 58%. Its elements are growing microstructural at a sharp pace, and a very optimum designing technique is required to deal with the development. Under the circumstances, the numbers of engineers and man-hours required to cope with the situation are increasing exponentially. The improvement of design productivity at the present time stays at a low annual rate of 21%. Surveyed are the background, objective, and necessity of the research and development of technologies for the whole designing process consisting of the function designing stage which is of the highest level, the logical circuit designing stage, and the manufacturing process designing stage. Furthermore, the current status, research, and development of related technologies and the status of related patents in Japan and overseas are surveyed. Studies are also conducted about the goals of technologies to be developed and about breakthrough points before achieving the goals, and a development project is assumed and proposed. (NEDO)

Natural convection is one of the factors that make the elucidation of the combustion phenomenon difficult. Such being the case, it is necessary to utilize microgravity enviroments to learn fuel combustion characteristics and parameters governing the combustion phenomenon for the development of optimal burning appliances. The free-fall facility of JAMIC (Japan Micro Gravity Center) creates a microgravity field that lasts for 10 seconds, and helps perform various combustion-related researches. This report outlines the findings obtained thanks to the use of this facility. In a `study concerning the creation of sophisticated combustion technology,` the combustion of 50{mu}m fuel droplets (too small to involve natural convetion) in a jet engine combustor is simulated in a microgravity field using experimentally producible 1mm drops, and the relationship between the droplet burn time and pressure is disclosed. In addition, using a small combustion furnace, the behavior of a natural-size flame is estimated and the propagation speed of a carbon powder flame is studied. 6 figs.

Research and development is conducted of a multimedia system to enable visually handicapped persons to use application programs on a GUI (graphic user interface)-based computer. This 1994-1998 project aims to complete a total system on the basis of the three element technologies of a non-visual GUI access system, a 3-dimensional sound field-aided information display system, and an optical medium reader. In relation to the non-visual GUI access system, a dialogue type sound/touch display using a touch/sound device is developed to deal with the structure and layout information about objects on the screen. The 3-dimensional sound field-aided information display system presents layout information such as the arrangement and shapes of GUI parts, and is subject to operation by mouse-aided non-visual direct pointing. The optical medium reader is almost complete, which enables a visually handicapped person to take in information and to access its contents. (NEDO)

This study pays attention to the relation between individual care and residents` activities in the social welfare institutions for the elderly (nursing homes) and aims to clarify the influence of building environment (nursing home as dwelling place) on individual care. Behaviors of care staffs and residents are surveyed in four nursing homes. The results of the analysis of the survey are as follows: The care staff`s activities are influenced not only by physical environment and also by the residents` activities. A single bed room is more effective than a multi-bed room for individual care. The small care unit is effective in building plan if the number of staffs is enough. The personal care activities which constitute the greater part of the care activities depend on the location of the residents. It is important to pay attention not only to arrange the common space but also how to use the common space. Spatial structure is required the consideration of the relative position of not only care rooms and resident rooms but also of care rooms and the space used by residents. 7 refs., 14 figs., 7 tabs.

Demands are placed on health care professionals to render coordinated delivery of services. Management of oral–systemic conditions requires a trained health care workforce to render interprofessional patient-centered and coordinated delivery of health care services. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of an interprofessional health care faculty training program. Methods: A statewide comprehensive type 2 diabetes training program was developed and offered to multidisciplinary health care faculty using innovative educational methods. Video-recorded clinically simulated patient encounters concentrated on the oral–systemic interactions between type 2 diabetes and comorbidities. Post-encounter instructors facilitated debriefing focused on preconceptions, self-assessment, and peer discussions, to develop a joint interprofessional care plan. Furthermore, the health care faculty explored nonhierarchical opportunities to bridge common health care themes and concepts, as well as opportunities to translate information into classroom instruction and patient care. Results: Thirty-six health care faculty from six disciplines completed the pre-research and post-research assessment survey to evaluate attitudes, knowledge, and perceptions following the interprofessional health care faculty training program. The evacuation-support system is under development for not only the aged bedridden persons but also the persons disabled in exercising movement to excrete by themselves. When the person lying on his bed is going to excrete, his sequence of actions to be taken is to sit down on his bed, walk to the toilet, sit on it, simultaneously take off his clothes and excrete. After the excretion, the above actions are reversely taken as for as he lies on his bed. Researches are being made into the mechanical system which partially or entirely supports the above five necessary actions. The system structuring can depend upon the following five types of disabled persons` residual function: difficulty in sitting or moving without help. Paralyzed lower extremities and partially impaired upper extremities. Ability to walk with functional assistance. Ability to stand up with support but walk unstably. Ability to walk, leaning on and along the railing. In the present project, its three constituent elements are being developed which are the multi-functional bed internally equipped with transferring/riding/mounting apparatus, transfer support apparatus and multi-function portable toilet. The development of the present system is expected to be followed by that of the self-supporting excretion system which will be proper for Japanese houses. 3 figs., 1 tab.

The systems in American and European countries for technological development of welfare-related equipment and tools are surveyed and analyzed, with the objectives to draw proposals for establishing the systems which help smooth spread of the research/development results. It is necessary, in selecting the research themes, to well balance the supports for research and development based on the ideas and initiatives by the researchers with those for the publicly invited themes in which the government narrows down the politically important items. For exchanging researchers, the program should help exchange researchers routinely, to match the needs and seeds. It is necessary for the research and development programs promoted by the government for welfare-related equipment to quantitatively grasp the characteristics of various body functions and deterioration of these functions by aging, and to encourage the new participants by providing them with the databases. For promotion of spreading the R and D results, it is necessary to develop laws and regulations which help reduce expenses of the individual disabled and aged, and promote purchase of equipment through insurance, like ADA and rehabilitation-related laws adopted by USA. This study is done for the purpose of numerically analyzing how customers react to make their choice between quality and price, as well as to evaluating the marketability of the new electric service differentiated by quality, on the assumption that electric utility is capable of providing the multi-product of the service with various combinations instead of the conventional single product between price and quality. An analysis was made for the customers like the large-scale computer users those who attach importance to quality. As for the method of the analysis, the choice (the introduction of emergency power source or uninterruptible power system) which have been actually done by the customers for the following two conditions, were used as the model of the analysis: The one was the standard of the requirements for the quality of electric power, of which requirements were composed of the two factors, such as the reliability on power supply and momentary voltage drop; The other was the cost (purchased power price plus investment by consumers for back-up power system) necessary to maintain the quality. Consequently, it was found that in order to heighten the competitiveness for the competition in electricity market, electric utility had to establish their service rate corresponding to the load, as well as that the quality was a important strategic factor for them. 30 refs., 10 figs., 9 tabs.

With an objective of creating ultra-high density organic photo recording elements for photon mode recording and rewritable wavelength multiplex recording by utilizing control of association status of photochromic compound, research and development has been performed. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1989. In developing the materials, verification was made on effectiveness of the newly structured positive polarity model. The method was used to attempt synthesis of four kinds of new spiropyrane, among which it was discovered that BSP1822 forms J-association complex in the long wavelength region. In the thin film forming technology, the J-association complex of BSP1822 was stabilized successfully in the film mixed with bi-molecular film forming material. In order to develop a technology to form dry photochromic thin films, an organic molecular beam epitaxial device and a thin film structure analyzer were introduced. In the elucidation and research on fundamental properties, discussions were given on properties of the SP1822LB film revealed by the steady-state light and laser pulse light. Furthermore, the molecular orientation of the SP1801 on the air-water interface was investigated, and molecular models on the air-water interface were considered. (NEDO)

A survey was made in relation with joint utilization of welfare device development data using an international network. Developing welfare devices requires data from ergonomic and medical systems, while the cope of the objects is wide, and the kinds are various. For proliferation of welfare devices, system compatibility evaluation including that on using environment is important, including living environments that are different by countries. The present survey has identified how data for aged, handicapped and help-needing persons are accumulated and utilized in research organizations in America and Europe for both of the ergonomic and medical areas. The survey also investigated major academic societies in overseas countries, and collected database and academic network information that support the advanced research and development. At the same time, investigations were also made on organizations and corporations who are moving forward the efficient data utilization. Welfare device and service information providing systems in Japan were investigated to compare them with the trends in other countries. Conceptions and methods were compiled to utilize data internationally and jointly. Database models for device development were considered, and a proposal was made on structuring a research and development supporting database, and the operation method thereof. (NEDO)

The air compressor which rises pneumatics for actuating pneumatic equipment is very low in energy efficiency also including the power source. Conventionally, at works which use large lots of compressor power, for example, improvements have been made on such as leakage of pneumatics from compressor and pneumatic equipment and piping for power reduction, but the present situation is that processing including compressor and pneumatic compressor through exhaust gas treatment is not regarded as a synthetic system. Therefore, the following problems should be studied: (1) distributed installation of compressors at right place from centralized installation, reduction of pressure loss of piping, etc., and how to use pneumatic equipment and how to improve its performance; (2) energy conservation by lessening gap between compressor pressure and pressure in using pneumatic equipment; (3) energy conservation by improving exhaust gas treatment, etc. This time, an investigational research on these items was systematically conducted to study measures for energy reduction of power source and increase of efficiency. The study was made on making guides such as manuals which becomes effective for energy conservation measures and policies to be guidelines on the development of equipment. 9 refs., 46 figs., 9 tabs.

Research and development of a mobile robot is carried out, who steers the meal distribution wagon, serves the meal at the bedside of aged or disabled people, retrieves the dishes when the meal is over, and then carry them back. The conditions discussed in the study for the robot to simultaneously satisfy are mentioned below. It should be of the size and weight fit for the job, avoid obstacles while travelling automatically and safely, behave at a safe and proper rate not jeopardizing the patient during the feeding process, communicate with the patient through picture and voice, and capable of acting without causing people to find in it anything overbearing or wrongful. The project began with the concept design process, which was followed by the basic design process, tentative manufacture of parts, tentative manufacture of components, and finally the construction of the whole. The developed robot system, after passing functional tests conducted in a mockup facility, experiences some period of tentative employment at three medical and welfare facilities. It is then confirmed that it safely performs a series of acts including meal serving and dish retrieving and that it is excellent in terms of autonomous self-control, safety, friendliness, and work efficiency. The effort is to develop technologies of conducting highly sensitive, uninterrupted observation of metabolism in the brain by use of the {sup 13}C-MRS unit, for which some carbon chain compounds (glucose, amino acids, etc.), which assume an important part in metabolism, are labelled by a stable isotope {sup 13}C and then administered to living things. A multi-slice HSQC (heteronuclear single quantum coherence) method is developed for the achievement of sensitivity enhanced 16 folds, excellent compound isolating capability, and high localizing capability, and these contribute to the specification of an optimum pulse sequence. A double tuning coil is developed for transmission, and a 6-channel multi-surface coil for reception, these two providing a 3-fold increase in detection probe sensitivity. The nonlinear least-square method is applied for the processing of spectral data, which enables excellent isolation of compounds. It also enables the generation of an inclined magnetic field quick to rise and of a sequence high in amplitude/phase accuracy. New methods are developed for the synthesis of {sup 13}C-labelled glucose, dopa, glutamine, glutamic acid, and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) which are expected to be useful in brain metabolism measurement, and the products are administered to animals for evaluation. Three-year research and development had been under way since fiscal 1998 for the establishment of global standards for domestic digital electronic equipment. In this last fiscal year of the project, emphasis was placed on supporting Japanese corporations concerned so that they would submit propositions relative to an expanded IPMP (Intellectual Property Management and Protection) system. First, Japan's technical propositions as to how to assure interchangeability between terminal devices were reviewed. Next, reviews were made of technical propositions and propositions for their application involving interface conversion and protocol conversion at content servers and RA servers, functional augmentation of roaming service, and the like. Support was provided for activities aiming at their global-scale standardization and for the preparation of groundwork materials for persons concerned with the technical committee involved. In relation to verification tests for supporting this project, system models, simulation models, and the like, were constructed. A single or multiple stimuli are simultaneously generated according to the control program, and they may be set to synchronize with heartbeat or breathing. A light stimulus providing unit is also built, equipped with a line-of-sight detector for the observation of eye movement to occur in response to the light stimulus. Using this unit, the line of sight and the pupil diameter are determined at 60Hz. An experimental MRI unit (maximum spatial resolution: 0.5mm times 0.5mm; activated region positioning error: {+-}2mm or less) is built, and improved. The input/output terminals are modified of an experimental QD4Ch coil for clinical evaluation, and this results in a 1.5 times increase in sensitivity. A brain function image data processing program is applied to the measurement of brain functions, which enables the isolating of the region of activated brain functions. Energy efficiency of construction machines is extremely low, because engines cannot follow sudden load changes. Solution is sought by developing a construction machine using as the motive force source a hybrid unit composed of an engine, a generator and batteries. The activities were advanced in the following five fields: (1) analysis on loads on existing construction machines, (2) development of hybrid move force unit, (3) development of an actuator device, (4) development of a control system, and (5) development of a hybrid construction machine simulating system. In Item (1), a control work on a 6-ton class hydraulic shovel was selected as a representative work, whereas the work was divided into seven modes to measure such output characteristics as fuel consumption and actuator output in each work, and the standard work load modes were established. In Item (2), motive force in the set load modes was measured to discover functional requirements on the motive force unit. In Item (5), the simulation model for the existing machines was used to evaluate the fuel consumption performance of the motive force unit. (NEDO)

To obtain the basic data to develop instruments for diagnosis of atherosclerosis and to elucidate the mechanisms of atherogenesis by focusing on the autofluorescence of blood and vascular walls of atherosclerotic animal models and human patients. We have performed experiments to examine the relationships between autofluorescence of blood and vascular walls of guinea pig atherosclerotic model and human patients and obtained the following results. 1. The autofluorescence from human atherosclerotic aorta included the components with longer wave length than normal aorta, suggesting that diagnosis of atherosclerotic aortic walls will be possible using spectroscopic analysis through glass fiber catheter into vascular system. Further studies should be needed to the quantitative diagnosis. 2. The autofluorescence from blood plasma of human atherosclerotic patients has showed that the peak wave length was shorter than that of normal plasma. This phenomenon was mainly caused by the oxidization of plasma, especially lipoproteins, LDL and HDL. 3. Atherosclerotic model of the guinea pigs was quite similar to human atherosclerosis at the points of cholesterol levels and localization of lipid deposit to arterial walls, and showed to be useful for the studies of atherosclerosis. As part of the 'clean development mechanism (CDM)' activities to be conducted by advanced nations jointly with developing nations, a survey is conducted of potential for higher energy efficiency, the effect of greenhouse gas reduction, and the effect of related investments in Egypt's textile (dyeing) industry. As the result, it is found that the Egyptian textile (dyeing) industry is rich in potential for higher energy efficiency and that intensification of energy management with importance attached to instrumentation will be quite effective. Private plants, though small in scale, enjoy a high operating rate and are full of life. As for their energy management, however, though management oriented instrumentation is found to stay without being scattered or lost in case of newly introduced equipment, normal operation is impeded by damaged parts which are not duly repaired or replaced. As for state operated plants, they are large in scale and are provided with some leading-edge facilities. Many of them are obsolete, however, and a privatization plan is under consideration, these discouraging investors and reducing vitality. Operation control or quality control are not sufficiently practiced in the administration of plants, and they need improvement. (NEDO)

In relation to WD3.0 of IPMP, Japan's propositions were incorporated into its core, and this proved to be the major accomplishment under this project. (NEDO)

An ultrasonic probe with its point fine is navigated in blood vessels and body cavities by 3-dimensional ultrasonic signals (with the oscillator driven by transmission from a catheter for position detection) for the acquisition of accurate 3-dimensional ultrasound images in a less invasive way. The transmission and reception circuits are provided with circuits for ultrasound tomographic images and for navigation. Trial units are fabricated and tested for transmission waveform and reception performance. The scanner is rotated for the acquisition of intravascular 3-dimensional radial images. The scanner rotating rate is set at 30 rps for the scanner performance not to be affected by heartbeat and the rate is controlled by the observation unit which changes voltage for the control. The 3-dimensional display software program, thanks to the navigation function of the external probe, detects the external probe position relative to the small-diameter probe for the construction of accurate 3-dimensional images. Specifications for a total system, which makes full use of a navigation function, are compiled, consisting of a small-diameter probe and a body surface real-time 3-dimensional display. (NEDO)

A laboratory system named above has been developed to propel forward efficiently the efforts to develop medical welfare technologies through close coordination between medicine and engineering. Six laboratories are linked with each other in a network for the realization of an environment in which general support is extended to all the stages of equipment development from basic through clinical assessment. The biomedical engineering laboratory is constituted of various analyzing devices, and is capable of in vitro assessment of bioingredients. The therapeutic laboratory is provided with bioinformation/NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) measurement equipment, animal surgical operation equipment, etc., and performs the assessment of test animals at the first stage of clinical assessment. The diagnostic laboratory acquires various image data necessary for the development of medical equipment at the same level as that of the site of clinical diagnosis. The intelligent surgical operation room takes in real-time diagnostic images while a surgical operation is under way and, at the same time, assesses surgical devices in the same environment as that of the surgical operation room. The medical information laboratory accumulates medical and image data from the other laboratories, and integrates the accumulated data. The data management center manages the laboratories in a unified way and enables comprehensive assessment and research. (NEDO)

The device is now satisfactorily capable of all image processing functions (bi-levelling, color deviation, brilliance adjustment, etc.) with the exception the karyotyping function. A substance that emits fluorescence by laser excitation is developed (for labelling the probe). A direct labelling method is studied, in which nucleic acid probes (nucleic acid labelled for chromosomal identification) will prove to be remarkably high in sensitivity. A new fluorescent reagent is synthesized, which is a BHHCT-4-dUTP to act as a nucleic acid probe. It is found that the new substance is superior to the conventional fluorescent substances in terms of stability and that all chromosomes may be forced into hybridization (selective combination of a probe with a peculiar chromosome) when various probes are labelled by this substance. A programing unit is constructed for a chromosomal aberration database. Items needed relative to chromosomes and parameters relative to chromosomal aberration data are appropriately arranged, and conditions to satisfy for their development into a database are studied. Introduced in this paper are some problems that the author encounters in relation with a 2.6kW photovoltaic power generation system installed at the author`s residence for the purpose of measuring the hourly amounts of generated power. Giving rise to questions in the inverter and the control system are the conversion efficiency under a partial load, the scope of little amounts that are omitted, the maximum power point tracking system and its performance, etc. The author wants to learn how to land on an appropriate conductor thickness and to know the special specifications if any for heavy-snow regions and their effect. Much has been learned from presenters, moderators, and participants at scientific events and through private talks. Although it seems that there exists some relationship between the maximum power point tracking system and the diameter of conductors suitable for the system, yet the manufacturers fail to give clear-cut answers. The author thinks that end-users find many black box-like parts in the system, which the author leaves uncared for now for later study. It is learned that there is no specification intended exclusively for heavy-snow regions. The author`s system is in operation with hourly output recording and data accumulation started. 2 figs.

This report summarizes the research result on development of new coal exploration technology. For a high-precision and high-resolution reflective seismic exploration system, R and D was made on the exploration technology of several meter in resolution for medium-depth (800m) coal deposits under a lake of 2m deep. As a result, the high-frequency and high-power source (150-200Hz in dominant frequency, 700-800m in penetrability) and the high-frequency and high sensitivity receiver (10-1000Hz in frequency band, 35V/PA in sensitivity) were developed successfully, and the positioning system was improved. The final evaluation of these elementary technologies was carried out through demonstration tests, resulting in satisfactory results. For a high-efficiency trial drilling system, the in-bore trouble prevention system for measurement, processing and analysis of drilling data (drilling length, drilling rate, revolution, bit load, torque) and drilling mud data (charge water pressure, charge/discharge water, density, pH, viscosity) was constructed. The outlook for low-cost measurement and a safety during drilling was thus obtained. (NEDO)

The R and D were conducted of a grinding machine system of an environmental-friendly type in which no coolant is used or the amount of coolant is reduced, and the FY 2000 results were summed up. As to the ECOLOG grinding newly thought up, the roles were divided: the lubrication into a trace of the vegetable oil supplied onto the grindstone surface, cooling into a trace of the cooling water supplied to the structure, discharge of chips to the cooling water for bed table cleaning. By this, the amount of the cooling water becomes approximately 1/3 of that in the conventional grinding. Concerning the ECOLOG grinding using the usual grindstone, the grinding performance equal to that in the conventional grinding was confirmed. In the study for making the cooling water non-pollutant, the chlorine/sulfur free coolant was developed which includes no chemical substances designated by the PRTR law at all. It was confirmed that the grinding performance was almost the same level as the existing coolant which includes sulfur. In the study of the supply of coolant applied with ultrasonic waves, the result was obtained that in the optical glass grinding, the number of scratches decreased and the surface roughness improved even at the flow rate of coolant which is less than in the conventional grinding. Efforts are exerted to develop power-efficient modules to be built into electrical products for reduction in power consumption in the standby state for domestic and office-automation appliances. In this study, television sets, audio sets, and air conditioners were selected out of domestic appliances and, out of office-automation appliances, notebook-size and desktop personal computers were selected. The standby power consumption is to be reduced to 3mW for domestic appliances, to 0.2W for notebook-size personal computers, and to 1/10-1/200 of the level being currently consumed in the case of desktop personal computers. For domestic appliances, a power efficient module not insulated from the AC power line was developed, to be built into a CPU-aided appliance to be turned on and off by remote control for the reduction of its standby power to 3mW. For notebook-size personal computers, a power-efficient power source insulated from the AC power line was developed, which consumes but 0.2W of standby power. It was built into a marketed notebook-size personal computer and tested for performance. For desktop personal computers, a 25mW power source insulated from the AC power line was fabricated, and tested for performance. (NEDO)

The paper described the result of the fiscal 1996 development relating to hydrogen combustion turbines, as one of the hydrogen utilization technologies, which have excellent environmentality and are expected of remarkably high efficiency. In the film cooling system of first-stage moving/stationary blades, the smaller the pitch of film pore is, the higher the mean cooling efficiency becomes, indicating 0.7 at maximum. As compared with the conventional shower head type, the metal temperature can be reduced 30-40degC. In the recovery type inner (convection) cooling system, by reducing the blade number, the consumption amount of coolant can be reduced 6% in stationary blade and 13% in moving blade, as compared with the result of the preceding year. In the element test of the hybrid cooling system, film cooling efficiency was actually measured by the porous module test equipment, and the result well agreed with the calculation result. In the water cooling system, studied were water (stationary blade) and vapor (moving blade) of the closed cooling structure for realization of a cycle efficiency of 60%. In rotor/disk cooling, analyses were made of seal characteristic grasp tests and characteristics of the rotor. The effect of deflection in the mainstream was small. Besides, proper value of the seal overlapping amount could be obtained. 6 refs., 368 figs., 55 tabs.

In Item (2), it was discovered most suitable that maltose concentration is about 5%, glutamic acid concentration is about 50 mM, the initial culture medium pH is about six, and the cultivation temperature is 30 degree C. In item (3), as a result of mixing this red coloring matter containing cultivation broth into preparation of Miso (bean paste) and soy sauce, products having high {gamma}-Aminobutyric acid and monacholin k content were developed. In addition, while Beni-koji made by solid cultivation had peculiar taste and odor, this drawback was eliminated by using this coloring matter containing cultivation broth. This has made differentiation from conventional products possible. (NEDO)

The present research and development is intended to establish the fundamental technologies required to develop a pilot plant, by investigating development of such major component devices as turbine blades and rotors in a hydrogen combustion turbine. In the turbine moving and stator blade cooling technology, it is intended to achieve the power plant efficiency of 60% (based on HHV) as established in the interim evaluation performed in fiscal 1996. Therefore, the necessary element tests, detailed blade design, and partial fabrication were moved forward on the three kinds of the selected blade cooling systems as the cooling systems that can deal with the steam temperature condition as high as 1,700 degrees C. Fiscal 1998 will execute the design and fabrication of test blades and testing devices for blade cooling evaluation tests to be performed at Tashiro Township in Akita Prefecture. At the same time, evaluation and selection will be made on the three kinds of the cooling blades. In the rotor cooling technology, for the purpose of analyzing the rolling-in phenomenon of steam in the main turbine flow, a method will be developed to analyze rotor disk cavity temperatures based on CFD, the basic sealing conditions based thereon will be discussed, and generalization will be made on the rotor cooling technology. Among the research and development items in relation with the 'development of hydrogen burning turbines' based on the WE-NET project, surveys have been performed on developing the main components including turbine blades and rotors. The current fiscal year has surveyed the latest trends in the existing gas turbine and rotor cooling technologies, and the technological problems were extracted from the viewpoint of application to the hydrogen fueled turbines. Since the hydrogen fueled turbines have the entrance temperature higher than that of power generation gas turbines, development of the blade cooling technology is important. Main cooling methods available are the film cooling and transpiration cooling, whose technological development is necessary in the advanced forms. Cooling method for the inner side of blades includes the impingement cooling and the pin fin cooling, whereas the V-letter shaped turbulence accelerating rib and the serpentine flow path structure are considered promising. Increasing the anti-heat temperature of blades may be realized by utilizing ceramics. As a technology close to putting it into practical use, application of heat shield coating is promising. (NEDO)

As to the development of coal use hydrogen production technology, the paper made the test study on the improvement of gasifier use materials and evaluation of the characteristics, the evaluation test in the environment using the actual machine, etc., and the FY 1993 results were reported. The results of the study were as follows. Concerning the shaped refractory for gasifier hearth, it was found that high chromia base and picrochromite base refractory development materials had much more excellent coal slag resistance than other existing component-system materials. It was shown that the development materials began to deteriorate under the coal gasification environment at temperatures of about 1,500 degrees C or higher. As to the mullite ceramics, a possibility was shown of improving the slag permeation resistance by making the crystal grain coarse by long-time sintering. By the survey of the state of damage of the proposed materials (refractory and iridium) used in the operational environment of the pilot plant, the outlook for use limit was made clear. In the environment test using the actual machine on the proposed metal base alloy of the typical equipment of the pilot plant, the correspondence between the operational environment and material corrosion was made clear. Weatherability tests have been performed on devices used in the residential photovoltaic power generation system by means of exposure, with the objectives to analyze and evaluate the safety and reliability due to aging of the devices used in the residential photovoltaic power generation system. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1995. In the outdoor exposure test on solar cell modules, multi-crystalline silicon solar cell modules were selected as the test specimens, and thermo-couples were embedded in the modules to measure the temperatures. Also for the purpose of comparison, storage test specimens were stored in a constant temperature and humidity chamber. The exposure tests were carried out in three locations of the city of Choshi in Chiba Prefecture, the Miyako Island test site in Okinawa Prefecture, and the Miyako Island seashore. In the measurement and evaluation, appearance observation and measurements of output characteristics and insulation resistance were executed in summer and winter. No noticeable changes were observed in the measurements after lapse of four months and six months. In the outdoor exposure tests of metal test pieces, aluminum alloys were tested for corrosion caused by contact with different kinds of metals. Although the test period was short in the current fiscal year, difference in corrosion degrees in the aluminum alloys was found already in three months. (NEDO)

Weatherability tests have been performed on devices used in the residential photovoltaic power generation system by means of exposure, with the objectives to analyze and evaluate the safety and reliability due to aging of the devices used in the residential photovoltaic power generation system. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1996. In the outdoor exposure tests on solar cell modules, results of the tests were derived for up to 18 months after the start of the exposure at Choshi City, Miyako Island and the Miyako Island seashore. In the appearance observation, some white rust has appeared in the contact section of the aluminum frames of the solar cell modules and fixing screws, which have been exposed at Miyako Island and the Miyako Island seashore, but no changes that may give influence on the performance of the solar cells have been observed. The results showed performance similar to or slightly inferior to that before the exposure as a whole. The insulation resistances were all found good. According to the result of the outdoor exposure test of metal test pieces, noticeable difference in the corrosion degrees was recognized in the contact corrosion section of the aluminum alloys exposed in three areas having different meteorological and environmental factors. Electroplated zinc was found to have severer pitting corrosion in the contact sections than treatment-free zinc. (NEDO)

With the objectives to analyze and evaluate the safety and reliability due to aging of the devices used in the residential photovoltaic power generation system, weatherability tests have been performed on devices used in the residential photovoltaic power generation system by means of exposure. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1997. In the outdoor exposure tests on multi-crystalline silicon solar cell modules at Choshi City, Miyako Island and the Miyako Island seashore, the output characteristics after the exposure tests showed a result that the insolation intensity and the change in the short circuit current are approximately proportional, and the temperature in the module and the change in the open voltage are inversely proportional. The module characteristics retention rate showed no change in the 29-month exposure at all of the three exposure locations. The insulation resistance in the exposure test specimens have been good at 2,000 M{omega} or more in all the locations until 18 months have elapsed. However, the test specimens in Miyako Island and the Miyako Island seashore showed 99 M{omega} after 23 months, and 129 to 1,774 M{omega} after 29 months. According to the outdoor exposure tests of metal test pieces, noticeable difference was found in corrosion due to difference in the environment by each exposure location, whose order of the corrosion degree was the Miyako Island seashore > Miyako Island > Choshi City.
