Demands are strong for lower-resistivity transparent conductive films formable at low temperatures (target substrate temperature of 100 degrees C) for the realization of higher-quality electronic equipment required in highly computerized society. The project aims to develop a system for complexation and amalgamation of high-density energy beams (multi-beam thin film formation) and to establish a technology of practical level ultrahigh quality transparent conductive film formation. For this purpose, a load lock system and a laser irradiation system are added to a device developed in the past. A high-quality ITO (indium-tin oxide) thin film is formed at a low temperature by deposition using oxygen cluster irradiation. During film formation using the laser aberration method, ultraviolet rays are applied to the substrate, and a low-resistivity film of 8.9 times 10{sup -5} ohm/cm is obtained on a substrate at 200 degrees C. This process is attributed to crystallization accelerated by ultraviolet rays and to an increase in carrier mobility. In a process of transparent conductive film formation under a complex beam, composed of a laser beam and oxygen cluster ion beam, to be excited for application to mass production, an ITO thin film is formed, with its resistivity extremely low at 10{sup -5} ohm/cm even at 100 degrees C. Likewise, faculty that are only using pedagogy and not including current technology are not fully preparing their students for careers beyond their undergraduate studies. Bernauer and Tomei aim to help college professors become master educators by fully utilizing both technology and pedagogy in unison. To that end, they have created a framework for faculty and an impressive list of tools with pre-identified objectives. This paper aims to give an account of the Latin naming of the different types of teeth by reviewing relevant historical and contemporary literature. The paper presents etymologies of Latin or Greek teeth names, their development, variants and synonyms, and sometimes the names of their authors. The Greek names did not have the status of official terms, but the Latin terms for particular types of teeth gradually established themselves. Names for the incisors, canines and molars are Latin calques for the Greek ones (tomeis, kynodontes, mylai), dens serotinus is an indirect calque of the Greek name (odús) opsigonos, and the term pre-molar is created in the way which is now common in modern anatomical terminology, using the prefix prae- = pre and the adjective molaris. The Latin terms dentes canini and dentes molares occur in the Classical Latin literature, the term (dentes) incisivi is found first time in medieval literature, and the terms dentes premolares and dens serotinus are modern-age ones.

The details of the investigation on the Odawara Blue Way Bridge for which extradosed type is employed are provided, and a report is made about the situation of the study on the future construction of the 2nd Tomei-Meishin Expressway. The extradosed PC bridge is considered to have intermediate structural characteristics of those of the conventional beam bridge and PC cable stayed bridge, and is expected to be applied to bridges having approximately from 100 to 200m span. The features of the extradosed PC bridge is outlined. Approximately 1/35 beam height on the intermediate support and 1/10 main tower height against the center span are considered to be proper. PC steel products can be used efficiently because stress fluctuation of diagonals and the load sharing rate of the diagonal member are less than those of the PC cable stayed bridge and safety factor similar to that of general internal cable can be adopted. Construction works for the main tower and the diagonal member are easy due to low height of the main tower, and the bridge is advantageous also in the maintenance control because no beam is required. 5 refs., 8 figs., 2 tabs.

Study was made on improvement of the strength of silica aerogel as transparent insulating material. Silica aerogel is a low-density porous material with high heat insulation and transparency. To develop a insulating material with high transparency, monolithic silica aerogel was studied. For direct use of it for windows, its strength improvement was attempted. The aerogel was prepared by supercritical drying (alcohol or CO2) of silica wet gel obtained by hydrolysis and condensation of silicon alkoxide solution. To prepare the aerogel bonded on plate glass for strength improvement, the aerogel was bonded to alkoxide by exposing active silanol radical through F-etching of plate glass surface. However, to obtain the practical large-area bonded aerogel, shrinkage control of the aerogel in supercritical drying was necessary. Addition of Laponite into a silica network for strength improvement by polymer increased the bending strength by 50%. Although some reduction of its transparency was observed because of clouding, its heat insulation was stable. Further strength improvement is necessary for its practical use. 5 figs., 1 tab.

The article Old Users and Young Dealers? A Case Study into the updated Drugs Act in the City of Rio de Janeiro, at a wider scope, talks about the consumption of drugs in Brazil, and in particular in the city of Rio de Janeiro. How is drug use treated? What happens to the users? These questions, however, may be approached from various angles. This study is based on the standpoint of drugs consumers themselves and also on the legal arguments and representations – as they inform powerful regulatory systems over drugs. The functioning of the Criminal Justice System is discussed based on the developments of a case of recorded “drug trafficking” which later becomes “drug use”.Keywords: Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian Criminal Justice System, drug consumption, users, dealers

The purpose of this study is to combine seismic activity and volcanic activity by reproducing the formation process of the crustal structure from a physical viewpoint or developing as its extension a numerical simulator which can predict the future. The phenomenon to which attention is especially paid at present is a relation between the dynamic process and the thermal process in the domain including the crust or the upper mantle. Namely, to elucidate the formation process of the crust structure, diastrophism also including seismic activity, igneous activity, etc., it is important to evaluate effects of the behavior of heat supplied from the deep on the dynamic process. In the finite element method, it is not easy to make the effect of gravity reflect to the calculation for boundary conditions. Accordingly, it is general to pay attention to stress difference, considering that stress by gravity is in proportion to static rock pressure stress. Further, to realize interaction between the thermal process and the dynamic process, effects of thermal stress are expressed combining the heat conducting analysis and the plastic flow analysis. 3 refs., 7 figs.

A study is being made on premixed lean diesel combustion (PREDIC) by means of early fuel injection in diesel engines. The PREDIC makes it possible to largely reduce NOx emission, but has such problems as ignition control and increase in THC and CO generation. In order to clarify the relationship between fuel spray characteristics in the PREDIC and properties of gas mixture and exhausts, the present study has investigated spread and internal structure of the spray by means of spray observation experiment using a pintle swirl nozzle. Based on the result therefrom, simulations were used to investigate effects of spatial dispersion characteristics of the spray on properties of the gas mixture and exhausts before ignition. The pintle swirl nozzle forms conical spray having an air layer inside the spray, where penetration is suppressed even under low atmospheric pressure. By forming hollow spray or solid spray in the conical spray, a possibility was indicated that equivalent ratio distribution of the gas mixture can be controlled and NO emission may be reduced. 8 refs., 12 figs., 1 tab.

The Masuda basin in the western edge of Shimane Prefecture and the Pohang basin in the southern part of the east cost of Korea had been formed in the middle of Miocene epoch of Neogene period, and show similarity in their geology and structure. A gamma-ray prospecting was carried out on major faults that have had been involved in forming these basins. A portable gamma-ray analysis device, model 8630 made by Clearpulse Corporation was used for the measurement. Emanation of radon and its migration are known generally, whereas rise in radon is recognized above crevices with deep opening trend. The present faults having been involved in forming the basins are thought to have large falls in positive faults and often accompany crevices with opening trend. This estimation is thought endorsed by the result of the present prospecting. In addition, such faults may often form geological boundaries, and the present survey has had geological division made easily with total gamma-ray. A gamma-ray exploration using both of the spectrum method and the total count method is a process sufficiently utilizable in geological surveys on structures in peripheries of sedimentary basins. 6 refs., 7 figs.

After operation of GENIUS-TF over three years with finally six naked Ge detectors (15kg) in liquid nitrogen in Gran Sasso we realize serious problems for realization of a full-size GENIUS-like experiment: (1) Background from Rn222 diffusing into the setup, on a level far beyond the expectation. (2) Limited long-term stability of naked detectors in liquid nitrogen as result of increasing leakage current. None of the six detectors is running after three years with the nominal leakage current. Three of the six detectors do not work any more at all. The results of our three years of investigation of the long-term stability may cast doubt on the possibility to perform full GENIUS-like projects.

For the purpose of developing a fan for an engine with ultra-high by-pass ratio, the design code of three-dimensional cascade of blades based on the Navier-Stokes equation has already been developed. This paper describes a method created by calculation grids which are part of this design code. This method is to generate boundary fitted grids to calculate the flow field across a cascade of blades placed radially in the axially symmetric space between hub and casing. In this method, one-period domain of the cascade of blades is mapped on a box in computational space by a series of combined streching transformation and conformal mapping. The grid in physical space is then obtained by successive inverse conformal mapping on the grid points in computational space. The grid obtained in this method is H-type and has a periodicity which includes the inclination of grid lines at the periodic boundary. As an example of the grid generated by this method, grids for primary and secondary models of the fan with ultra-high by-pass ratio are shown. 6 refs., 12 figs.

Research and development efforts are exerted to produce advanced dental materials equipped with such functions as plaque reduction, bactericidal effect, and early formation of hydroxyapatite (HAP). In the study of fluorine ion implantation for plaque reduction, it is found that in a specimen implanted with fluorine ions the adhesion of carius streptococci is reduced to 1/3-1/10 for the achievement of remarkable improvement. In particular, carious streptococcus multiplication is suppressed when the metal shield layer is replaced with a titanium mesh. For the realization of a thin film formation method for osteoblast multiplication through reforming the material surface in the study of bone-forming dental materials, film formation conditions under which a P/Ca rate which is quite near that of ameloblast are achieved by use of a high frequency magnetron sputtering device. Local mixture concentration near the spark plug of a direct gasoline injection engine was observed by a fast flame ionization detector. To ensure combustion stability and good fuel economy in DISC operation, the swirl ratio and the piston configuration were optimized. Swirl is needed to retain well-vaporized and stable mixture near the spark plug especially in light load. And adequate volume in piston cavity is required for trapping curved fuel spray in it. With these specifications, the fuel economy improvement of 13 to 30 % was realized. 2 refs., 13 figs., 1 tab.

To realize clean diesel exhaust, it is very important to clarify the atomization phenomena of the fuel spray. In this study, the initial stage of the atomization process of a diesel injection fuel spray was analyzed with a high-speed image converter camera under the conditions of atmospheric gas pressure and room temperature. As a result, it was found that the initial spray formation was greatly affected lay the condition inside the nozzle sac. In the case in which fuel existed in the sac, pin-like structure spray formation was observed at the initial injection stage. This phenomenon was not observed in the case in which no fuel was present in the sac, and a widely spread fuel spray formation was observed at the initial injection stage. The relatively low-speed fuel spray injected in the initial low-sac-pressure condition was pushed away by the subsequent fuel spray injected in the high-sac-pressure condition. 7 refs., 12 figs., 1 tab.

In 1992, there was republished by Paulo Suess "Etíope resgatado", written by Father Manuel Ribeiro Rocha. With the reissue of "Etíope resgatado", I took notice about Paulo Suess lecture, in an almost completely opposite direction. According to Suess, Ribeiro Rocha was nothing more than a simple "reformer" who had added nothing to the problem of libertarian idea of black slavery. (2010 and Durigan et al. (2010 in this issue of Revista Árvore. Legislators elsewhere, especially megadiversity countries, should take note. I do not take sides in the debate; I think both groups of authors make very good points. Instead I call on the scientists and legislators concerned with restoration to ponder five strategic tools: A. Start with clear concepts. B. Decide where you want to go and why. C. Negotiate who should benefit & how, and who should pay, how, & why. D. Work out how an honest cost-benefit analysis of restoration would look, regardless of the biome in which you are working. Finally, figure out how to make the restoration immediately attractive for private landowners. Otherwise, they will not cooperate as fully as they could or should, and restoration efforts will not achieve its full potential. Since ion implantation causes material degradation by formation of crystalline defects, and hydrogen embrittlement deteriorates material strength, reduction of such defects has been positively studied. Study was made on a new active application of hydrogen separation into ion implantation defects. After H ion implantation of a proper depth into single-crystalline Si and SiC and successive annealing, single-crystalline films of sub-micron to several micron thick were obtained by hydrogen-induced delamination at the implantation depth due to hydrogen embrittlement in crystalline defects. The implantation depth is dependent on implantation energy. H atom forms (111) face defect through connection with dangling bond of crystalline defects. This crystal face defect forms a delamination plane through (100) face cleavage. This hydrogen embrittlement delamination by ion implantation is applicable to production of light-weight high-efficiency single-crystalline Si solar cells, and large single-crystalline SiC wafers as new resource saving process. 33 refs., 19 figs., 2 tabs.

The unique advantage of the pulsed laser deposition is its ability to produce highly oriented stoichiometric films at a low substrate temperature. Ferroelectric PbTiO3 thin films have been formed using 2nd laser assisted laser ablaion technique at low temperature, i.e., 350degC, on Sr7iO3 single-crystal substrates and Pt/MgO electrodes. The second laser irradiation at the substrate surface is quite effective for crystallization of the films at low substrate temperature below 400degC. The suitable energy density (fluence) of the irradiation laser is in the range of 30-100 mJ/cm{sup 2}. X-ray diffraction patterns of PbTiO3 thin films show c-axis orientation, with a rocking angle of 1.0 - 0.5deg. These films exhibit ferroelectric hysteresis loop. The dielectric constant and remanent polalyzation of the PbTiO3 films are in the range of 120-150 and 60-80 {mu}C/cm{sup 2}, respectively. 31 refs., 10 figs., 1 tab.

The present study is intended to search for living organism deposition inhibiting active materials from the natural environment. Investigation on process of pollution in ocean reveals that adsorption of organic matters called conditioning occurs quickly on the surface, and the surface is covered by biofilms because of presence of bacteria and diatom in the surroundings. After the biofilms are formed, pollution occurs from living organisms, such as acorn barnacles. If the formation of the biofilms being the initial stage of living organism pollution in ocean can be controlled, deposition of large living organisms that follows the biofilm formation was anticipated to be controlled. Searches were made using this possibility as a parameter. The evaluation used a method to measure the antifungal properties specific to the bacteria. As a result of having made searches using this evaluation system, pyridylnitroalkanes were obtained. As compounds like phenethyl amines deeply involving in the deposition phenomenon were obtained, compounds having stronger activity were acquired by synthesizing the derivatives thereof. (NEDO)

Study is conducted of the effect of change in land use and increase in artificial exhaust heat on heat island formation in Shanghai. Concerning the land use distribution in Shanghai, a point sampling survey was conducted in the 1930s using topographic charts, when the area was broken down into building-occupied region, paddy field, bare ground, and waters. In the 1990s, thanks to data from satellites, high-density and low-density urban regions have added. Calculation for Shanghai is performed, based on the rate of increase in Tokyo`s population and data predicted for Shanghai`s population, on the assumption that Shanghai`s population in the 2050s will grow 2.3 times larger than it is in the 1990s. The prediction thus produced indicates that the urban area in Shanghai in the 2050s will be as large as that of the present-day Tokyo that covers a 50km zone. Heat island formation prediction for Shanghai is worked out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-aided simulation. According to the prediction, while the maximum temperature in the 1930s was 29.6degC or 4degC higher than in the suburbs, it is 33.2degC or 7.6deg higher in the 1990s, and will be 34.4degC or 8.6degC higher in the 2050s. 16 refs., 11 figs., 1 tab.

To introduce the power generation system fueled by animal waste (excrements), one of the so-called industrial waste, its feasibility has been studied in Koyu and surrounding area located in Miyazaki Prefecture. This report includes the technical feasibility of available quantity of animal waste, chemical analysis of the waste, and basic design of the power generation system containing the furnace model and also its economical feasibility. The available quantity of animal waste in Koyu area is about 169,000 tons a year, which can generate 10.5 MW of electric power. That including the surrounding area is about 219,000 tons a year, which can generate 15.0 MW. The heating values of animal excrements in average and as received are 970 kcal/kg for pigs and 1,230 to 2,700 kcal/kg for broilers. In the case of combustion of mixed broiler and pig excrements, both of the stoker and fluidized-bed model furnaces become refractory furnace construction and provide with heat recovery boiler due to their high moisture content. In addition, the stoker furnace model requires an excrement dryer system as pre-treatment of fuel. For the fluidized-bed furnace of 15 MW grade power plant using the mixed fuel of 50% broiler excrements and 50% pig excrements, the power generation efficiency of 23% can be expected at generator end. The generating cost is around 10 yen/kWh. 27 refs., 61 tabs.

The refuse-derived fuel (RDF) has been holding public attention not only as the energy resource of stable high calorific value for local energy development, but also as the effective method for waste treatment. As one of the effective utilization methods for waste treatment, this investigation was conducted to industrialize and establish the RDF power generation system, in which power generation and ash treatment are integrated in Tochigi Prefecture which is located inland. The base supply type was adopted as a way of operation from the menu of the electricity wholesale project of Tokyo Electric Power Co. and its rate of operation is 80 percent a year. Then, the fluidized bed combustion method, a dry exhaust gas treatment method, and continuous electric melting furnaces were decided as the RDF power generation system. According to this system, it is possible to obtain 26 percent gross thermal efficiency by conventional generation facilities. It was estimated that the expenses reduction for 15 years will be 17.6 billion yen compared with the ordinary combustion system. Also, the following effects can be expected; the reduction of CO2 emission, improvement of energy efficiency, and the extension of life of landfills capacity. 36 figs., 51 tabs.

As to the development and introduction of the global warming mitigation technology, the paper studied an approach to the formation of a social consensus and how to apply concrete methods and proposed a realistic approach in the light of the present situation of public enterprises in Japan. As tools and rules which are particularly important in activities of forming the consensus, the paper cited up what the PR control should be, responses to mass communications, HP making and regulation/preparation of the related laws, and made a concrete study. As examples in which there occurred friction with the society due to the insufficient formation of consensus, the following construction plans were taken up to consider problems, etc. in disclosure of the information in the plans: Underground Research Laboratory, movable weir in the Yoshino River, and waste disposal facilities at Fuimae tideland. Also in Japan, some methods for the consensus formation have been carried out, and in the survey, as concepts for classifying the methods, two different approaches, Public Outreach and Public Relations, were introduced. As to the former, a consensus formation method in the construction of power plants in Japan was introduced, and as to the latter, a method in consensus conferences in the U.K. (NEDO)

Demonstrative operation was conducted of the super waste power generation system in which the low temperature steam generated in waste incinerator is raised in temperature using the combustion exhaust gas emitted after the power generation using another gas turbine for conducting the steam turbine power generation with high efficiency. The FY 2000 results were summed up. In the demonstrative operation, operation and data acquisition/analysis were conducted following the previous fiscal year by 25MW class gas turbine repowering waste combined power generation facilities (Takahama power plant). Further, four years after the start of operation, the secular variation was studied by disassembly/inspection of equipment. As a result of the operation, the thermal efficiency was approximately 35%, much higher than the existing waste power generation. It was verified that the power system was maintained by the same maintenance as that of the ordinary power system. Moreover, the important point of this system is that no special corrosion resistant materials are used and that the high-efficiency waste power generation was demonstrated by combining the existing equipment. It can be said that the super waste power system has high qualities for forming energy community as a regionally dispersed stabilized power source. (NEDO)

This paper reports the study results on the fabrication technology of over-layered TCO on tempered glass in fiscal 1994. (1) On the fabrication technology of heat-resistant over-layered TCO, thermal deformation of TCO substrates was studied by both experiment and numerical computation. The thermal deformation increased with carrier concentration. As the observation result on change in lattice strain of heated TCO films by high-temperature X-ray diffraction, lattice strain was largely affected by thermal expansion. (2) On development of the low-temperature heat treatment method of TCO films, a technological prospect was obtained for fabrication of low-resistance TCO films by heat treatment without strength deterioration of tempered TCO substrates. (3) On development of cost reduction technology, the large-area CVD equipment was devised on the basis of the inline tempering method which tempers substrate glass by air cooling after formation of SnO2 film as fabrication method of tempered TCO. The TCO substrate tempered by air cooling could endure the drop test of 227g and 1.5m. 5 figs., 1 tab.

High efficiency power generation, which is useful for promoting the environment-friendly type energy and coordinated community, is investigated by combining a steam turbine power generation system using the PS-RDF (paper sludge-refuse derived fuel) and a gas turbine (GT) combined cycle. Industrialization plan for processing PS in low cost has been made to ensure the profitability by participating the wholesale power supply under the law of electric power industry. This combined system is similar to the so-called super power generation using municipal garbage, but the lower temperature of steam from GT waste heat boilers (WHB) is super-heated by the flue gas from RDF boiler, which is called advanced power generation system (A.S.S.). The total power generation capacity is 149,000 kW, which consists of three 35,000 kW units of GT and one 44,000 kW unit of steam turbine. When comparing the combined system (A.S.S.) and usual one with the independent installation of the RDF steam power generation system and a GT combined cycle, the A.S.S. provides the repowering efficiency of 7,600 kW output with exactly the same quantity of fuel input as usual one. 71 figs., 31 tabs.

NOx emission was extremely decreased by PREDIC (PREmixed lean DIesel Combustion) in which fuel was injected at very early stage of compression stroke and the combustion started at near the TDC by self ignition. We have considered that NOx reduction is caused the decrease of a region of stoichiometric mixture ratio by means of extremely early injection. Therefore the homogeneity is very important to decrease of NOx. In this study to investigate the effect of mixture homogeneity in the PREDIC, gaseous fuels (DME, CH4) were charged into the intake, by the combination of direct fuel injection, the mixture heterogeneity was positively changed. In addition the mixture formation process is shown in aid of numerical simulation, it is observed that the homogeneous has the advantage of low NOx emission in PREDIC region. 9 refs., 10 figs., 1 tab.

An investigational study was conducted on energy recovery (power generation) in disposal of industrial waste. The capacity of power generation facilities in incineration processing of industrial waste reached approximately 200,000kW (50 facilities) in the total nationwide. The incineration-processed waste is mainly chips of wood, waste tire and bagasse. Almost all the electric power is for non-utility use, and there are no examples of selling it outside. In the metropolitan area, there is only one example of the industrial waste incineration power generation in Tochigi prefecture. This is because there are extremely very few enterprises which are sources producing the waste as target. However, if the industrial waste market is targeted, there is a future. The industrial waste has a lot of disadvantages as power generation use fuel because of its diversification, but the use of it as fuel is technically easier than the use of the general waste as RDF. Accordingly, it can be used for power generation with no need of special technology or facilities. When picking up facilities with a potentiality of high efficiency power generation from the existing incinerators in operation of persons in charge of industrial waste processing, approximately 125,000 kW can be obtained only from remodeling of the existing facilities. Development has been advanced on a new flip chip technology with high efficiency and reliability to mount on lead frames and substrates the semiconductor devices that have been made higher in density and function and smaller in size. Specifically, discussions were given on a bump forming technology using micro balls with high accuracy and sphericity. With this technology, bumps are formed with high accuracy and efficiency by transferring and bonding the micro balls onto electrodes. Activities were taken in the following five areas: 1) discussions on the micro ball arranging technology, 2) optimization and evaluation on bed films, 3) manufacture and evaluation on micro balls, 4) overall evaluation and improvement discussion on quality and cost, and 5) analysis of thermal stress on soldered balls. In Item 1), micro balls are transferred onto pads after removing excess balls by sucking them into a suction head while having the micro balls float in a container by means of vibration. The suction arrangement plates were discussed and the suction system was optimized, whereas it was verified that balls with diameter of 100 {mu} m can be transferred and bonded onto pads of the chips without excess and insufficiency. Taking the Toyota-Kamo wide area as the object, wastes power generation is positioned over the society system as worked on by administrations and operators integrally to incinerate mixedly those incineratable materials such as plastics among general and industrial combustible wastes for high-efficiency generation of power, which is supplied to electric utility operators as surplus power. Discussions were given on the business feasibility and the effectiveness as a society system. In this area, the mixed model B plan (dealing with general wastes plus industrial wastes) was evaluated as an effective plan as the society system. This is because the plan has effect to incinerate, melt and generate power from industrial wastes which have been used for land-fill, effect of improving the power generation efficiency, and effectiveness of mixed treatment with general wastes. The plan A in which general wastes are made into RDF, then incinerated mixedly with industrial wastes for power generation was evaluated to have high reliability potential of power supply and to be an effective plan as a society system, if effect can be expected to reduce transportation energy as a result of making the system large enough and turning wastes into RDF. Survey/study were conducted of potentiality of the cogeneration business using ligneous biomass in Kami County and the periphery of Kochi Prefecture. In the survey, the following were studied: regional characteristics of the said area, levels of technology of direct combustion/thermochemical conversion, future technical trends, system candidate, grasp/analysis of the resource amount, characteristics of ligneous biomass resource in the said area, analysis of economical efficiency of the procurement of biomass resource, grasp of energy users, etc. As a result, a system was selected of a 1,000kW scale cogeneration of ligneous resource. At the present technology level and under scale conditions, it was found out that the fixed bed direct combustion system was the most profitable in securing the economical realization. As to the system mostly for power generation, however, it was found out that the heat low in unit price of energy production should widely be used because the installation cost of plant is comparatively high. Facilities such as Kochi Medical Center where heat is in great demand throughout the year can expect profit from selling heat, and therefore, those have high potentiality of the commercialization. The paper described the FY 1999 results of the study of atomic technology. Using a combined system of the scanning tunnel microscope (STM) with the field ion microscope and the atom probe (AP), a few Ag atoms were identified. Si windows were formed by electron beam irradiated from a STM tip, and Ge nanocrystal array was formed at the windows by supplying GeH4 gas. Iron clusters were deposited on Si substrates. With those as nuclei and in self-formation for etching masks, Si pillar distribution nano-crystals were etching-processed. The oxidation process of clean Si surface using ultra-high vacuum electron spin resonance was observed, and the incomplete state of the Si oxidation process was observed. Perovskite oxide superlattices composed of the two kinds were fabricated using the laser ablation method. The layer type antiferromagnetic spin arrangement is artificially modulated in the superlattices along the stacking direction. To observe the magnetic nano-structure, the development was commenced of a spin-polarized STM. The paper theoretically analyzed the dynamic process of atoms and molecules. (NEDO)

A business feasibility survey was performed on introduction of an RDF electric power generation system utilizing general wastes in the Noto area. Wastes quantity was estimated by accounting for large-sized wastes to be generated newly as a result of enforcement of the container package recycling law, and transfer of non-combustible wastes to incineration. The quantity was estimated to be 84,000 tons annually. Quantities of RDF and heat were calculated from this estimation to be 103 tons per day and 400 lkcal/kg respectively. According to the result of discussing the RDF transportation systems, time-based freight was found advantageous for short distance, and distance freight system for long distance in terms of cost. Discussions for RDF power systems were carried out on an RDF circulation fluid bed furnace plus ash melting furnace, a fluid bed gasification melting furnace, and shaft furnace type gasification melting furnace. In a comprehensive view, it is difficult to distinguish them in terms of merit and demerit. Molten slag was assumed to be re-utilized, but cost for the re-utilization should be considered. According to the result of discussing the business feasibility, it was found difficult to make it profitable by operating the RDF power generation business alone, and wastes incineration charge should be collected. The paper studied a system for power generation and heat utilization using wood chips such as waste construction materials, used paper inappropriate for recycling and plastic refuse from neighboring local governments as fuel and assessed a potentiality of the commercialization. As to the system, the following were conducted: selection of the optimum combustor in the waste power generation, survey of the state of corrosion of boiler tube in the steam conditions and waste properties, selection of the optimum quality of boiler materials, etc. In the assessment of a potentiality of the commercialization, the commercialization was studied as in-house power generation/heat utilization business with a power generation scale of 9,950kW and a steam supply scale of 31.5t/h. As a result of the study, the energy conservation effect was found to be expected as follows: reduction of 33,000kL/y crude oil equivalent and reduction of 16,000t-CO2/y emission. As a result of studying the economical efficiency of business, the unit price of wood chip purchase and the unit price of waste plastic treatment which are required to recover the difference of the initial investment within 5 years were greatly different from the level as an aim. For the realization as business, a subsidy of 15% and more cost reduction were requested. (NEDO)

A polycrystalline Si thin film formation technology is developed, which uses the flux process in which a reaction occurs between the target crystal and a flux component which is eutectic. Using this process, a crystal grain relatively large in diameter is obtained at a relatively low temperature. This method is now attracting attention as one of the technologies for producing crystalline Si film for use in thin-film polycrystalline Si solar cells. Especially when Al is used for flux, since Al is automatically doped into the target crystalline Si film, it is expected that the resulting film will serve as the ground for a photoactive layer provided with the BSF (back surface field) function which is important for the improvement of solar cell efficiency. A polycrystalline Si thin film is formed on a 2cm times 2cm-large glass substrate at a temperature not higher than 600 degrees C. It is recognized that films selectively oriented towards the (111) or (100) plane are acquired when other processes are employed. It is expected that the said Al-doped film provides a ground on which a BSF function-provided photoactive layer will be formed. (NEDO)

For the consistent processing of waste automobile in Tochigi Prefecture and the neighboring area, survey/study were made of the thermal recycle using shredder dust, ASR (automobile shredder residue), as fuel as well as the material recycle. As to the amount of material recycle of waste automobile, the amount of potential recycle of iron, copper, plastic, etc. was estimated, and it was found out that the potential recycle of parts such as engine was 40-45%, that of iron scrap 35-40%, and that of ASR 20-25%. The amount of fuel (ASR amount) to be thrown into the gasification power generation system was set up at 150t. As the gasification power generation system, the pyrolysis gasifier and shaft kiln gasification melting furnace were selected. In the study of economical efficiency of the gasification power generation system, the following were considered: ASR processing price, plant cost, subsidy, running cost, char receiving price, power selling price, etc., but even in the case of the pyrolysis gasifier with highest valuation, both payback years and IRR did not reach the target. This paper describes R and D of the ultimate manipulation technology of atoms and molecules (atom technology). Ten nanoscale Ge islands were successfully formed in proper positions on an Si substrate surface by using mask technology of nanoscale atomic layers. Growth of less-defect ZnSe films on a GaAs(110) surface was possible under various conditions. The magnetic transfer mechanism of Mn oxide with huge reluctance was clarified. Through study on selective-area deposition of Si on plasma-oxidized ultrathin SiO2 mask layers patterned by direct electron-beam exposure and an idea of SiO2/SiNx bilayer mask, direct use of the ultrathin mask layer as insulating layer in device structure was achieved. The superior property as electron beam resist of methano- fullerene composed of fullerene C60 with side chains including oxygen was clarified. The initial oxidation process of an Si(100) surface was analyzed, and the observation result by SREM was theoretically explained. Development of a high-resolution spin polarization electron microscope was also mentioned. 48 refs., 145 figs., 20 tabs.

Viability was studied of the power generation business using plastic waste as fuel and the methanol production business. In the project, the container packing waste plastic which was sorted/collected is supplied by tender, and the organic waste such as shredder dust is mixed. And the electric power is supplied to the gasification power generation facilities by the pressurized two-stage gasification process, neighboring plants, etc. As an alternative, the methanol production was also studied. As a result of the study, if the total amount of the waste plastic needed at the supply price assumed at present can be supplied, the business can be viable economically even without subsidy, but if the supply risk in supposing tender is considered, a subsidy of approximately 10% of the equipment/plant investment is needed. As to the methanol production as an alternative, it was indicated that the economical efficiency is almost the same, but the profitability gets fast worse due to the waste plastic supply cost since there is not much income and expenses are high despite of the smaller investment size than that in the case of the power generation. Survey/study were conducted of viability of an idea of the high efficiency power generation that combinedly use RDF from the refuse generated in Shizuoka/Yamanashi/Nagano prefectures and LNG from the LNG base in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. In the survey of raw materials for RDF, the present amount that can be supplied to RDF power generation was estimated at 280 t/d in RDF and 4,300 Kcal/kg or more in heating value. As to the RDF/LNG combination power generation, combinations of RDF200t/d + 25MW (capacity of gas turbine power generation) or RDF200t/d + 70MW seem to be appropriate. And, 30% or more of RDF power generation efficiency is made possible. In the study of economical efficiency, expenses born by local governments were calculated supposing that the difference between the unit price of power selling and that of power generation in power generation is born by RDF suppliers. As a result, the share becomes approximately 8,600-12,000 yen/refuse t in 15-year operation, and was found lower than that in the existing small-/medium-scale refuse incineration treatment. The combustion flue gas associated with the power generation business becomes approximately 300,000 Nm{sup 3}/h. The gas turbine fuel is natural gas, and RDF is good in combustibility. Therefore, the effect on the environment is expected to be small. (NEDO)
