In Japan with its rapidly aging society, fundamental technologies are required for the development of artificial nerves substituting for or supporting damaged ones, and ultimately constituting artificial neurons based on the knowledge of the brain functions at the molecular and cellular levels. This study defines the fundamental technologies which would be required for the development in the area, and further, evaluates the potential of the technologies to develop the novel industry. The brain function is closely related to the activity in neuronal circuits. In order to repair injured nerves and to develop the advanced technologies of electronics for helping impaired neuronal functions, the most important and urgent is to understand how to work the neuronal circuit system in the brain. Based on these viewpoints, new methodological approaches would make it possible to relieve neural impairment in the sensory input system and the motor system by the use of electronic circuits. They also would improve rehabilitation after injury, and treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson`s disease. These advances surely create the new types of industry seeds in near future. 77 refs., 29 figs., 2 tabs.

This survey was conducted to construct the core of intelligent social infrastructure technology (ISIT), and to investigate its practical application to industries and society. For realizing the ultra-safe and ultra-reliable society, it is necessary to develop the ISIT which can integrate various social infrastructures, such as architecture, city, energy, and lifeline systems required for living. For the systematization of cities, it is necessary to process and control the intelligent information by holding integrated and transverse information in common, as to logistics, lifeline, communication, monitoring, and control. For the communication engineering, the centralized systems are acceleratingly to be converted into the distributed network systems. For the mechanical engineering, intelligent control and robot technology are required. For the architectural engineering, a concept exceeding the conventional antiseismic structure idea is investigated. It is necessary to develop a new information technology providing an intelligent social infrastructures by merging the information networks and the physical world seamlessly. Necessity of ISIT is large for constructing the intelligent and ultra-reliable society consisting of these integrated and organized networks. 84 refs., 68 figs., 6 tabs.

This paper describes the surveys in fiscal 1999 on establishing industrial technology strategies in the human life engineering field. The human life engineering is an engineering to identify scientifically humans and their living characteristics, and apply them to products, systems, and environment building. Market size for the human living related industries is more than two trillion yen, whose annual growth rate is 9%. Discussions were given on problems that hinder technological innovations in this field. What lacks is the comprehensive strategic conception, and insufficient is the structural approach by related organizations. Technological systems for designing have not been established, and technological foundations relative to human characteristics and living characteristics are not well arranged. Methods to evaluate research achievements have not been established, and the works on proposing international standards are weak. Insufficiency in human resource nurturing is also an issue. As the future prospect and strategies, such fields as psychology, recognition, and sensitivity are important for the seeds technologies, and so are the measurement of supportive technologies, and information processing. The human living engineering aims at supporting safety, freedom from care, and high-quality life, realizing industrial and technological competitiveness of the world top groups, and forming societies with activity and high quality. Biosynthesis of saccharides from many years has been justified by the close teamwork of oxygen. For controlling the saccharide structure not only just make excessive discovery of sugar transfer oxygen but also is necessary to consider the discovery towards local position agreed with biosynthesis and balance with competitive oxygen. With this meaning, it is said that `saccharide is such a world that is not effected directly by gene`. Saccharides are the biggest partner of protein and possess important function where inflexible function of protein is expanded to flexible and kind thing for living body. The authors promoted the production of human adaptive sugar protein using yeast and development of multiple from oxygen further one stage ahead of biosynthesis process of composite type N bonding saccharides specific to yeast and in return, introducing the gene of saccharide biosynthesis system of mammal. The buckwheat soup is a mixture of seasonings such as soy sauce, sweet sake, sugar and the like and stock of dried bonito. This paper describes an analysis of the stock manufacturing step, an important step in the manufacture of buckwheat soup, and the setting of stock extraction conditions on the basis of this analysis. If the rate of infiltration of water into the dried bonito is found, it is a very effective finding for setting the thickness of flakes of dried bonito and the extraction time to prepare buckwheat soup industrially. To obtain such knowledge, the time taken for the water to pass through flakes of dried bonito of various thicknesses, to vaporize and to remove latent heat till the temperature of the surfaces of flakes lowers was measured. The thickness of flakes of dried bonito and extraction time were set on the basis of the data thus obtained. Dired bonito was then supplied to a bench scale flow extraction apparatus filled with hot water, and the content of inosinic acid, a taste component of the dried bonito in the extracted liquid was measured at predetermined time intervals. An operating manual for various extraction lot sizes was made on the basis of the data thsu obtained. 4 refs., 4 figs.

This paper describes the following matters related to application of photonic and electronic characteristics of Fullerene: C60 crystals precipitated from benzene aqueous solution have an fcc structure and an hcp structure mixed, with its mixing ratio depending on hysteresis of test specimens. Mono-crystal thin films of C60 and C70 can be formed on mica substrates by means of a vacuum deposition process. On a CaF2 (111) substrate under normal temperature, a C60 thin film with the fcc structure grows in a single direction in the plane having its (111) plane paralleled with the substrate face. However, on a substrate under elevated temperatures, the film grows in two different directions in the plane, making grid conformity better in C60 and CaF2. Thin films of C60 and C70 transfer to a low temperature phase at a temperature of about 260 K or lower. Carbon nanocapsules containing LaC2 monocrystals can be obtained from arc discharge of a graphite electrode containing La oxides. The paper introduces nonlinear optical characteristics of C60 and C70 thin films, and light conductive polymers doped with C6O and C70. 39 refs., 10 figs.

This paper described a method of manufacturing and the characteristics of freezed pilaf, a typical food among the foods using freezed boiled rice. In an industrial freezed pilaf manufacturing method devised by adding automation and mass production techniques to the ordinal home cooking method, the water-immersed rice in a pot is cooked or heated with steam, ingredients and seasonings are added to the cooked or steamed rice, and the rice is freezed in units of one grain or several grains. The pilaf freezing apparatuses include gas type apparatuses using liquid nitrogen (-196{degree}C) or liquid carbon dioxide (-79{degree}C), mechanical type apparatuses using a chlorofluorocarbon freezer, and air turbo type apparatuses for freezing pilaf by using cold air obtained by the expansion turbine of an air separator. For the production of freezed pilaf, gas type apparatuses having a simple structure and capable of manufacturing high-quality freezed pilaf were initially used. However, owing to the technical innovation of freezing apparatuses, mechanical type and air turbo type freezing apparatuses which require a heavy initial investment but which can be operated at a low running cost have been gradually substituted for the gas type apparatuses. 5 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.

The living effect of agricultural products is based on the chemical reaction and substance movement in cells. Water is structurally modified by the increase of hydrogen-combined water molecule groups as a result of dissolving nonpolar gas into water. Structurally modified water can be obtained by adjusting the dissolved amount of nonpolar gas. Evaporation energy is increased and viscosity is getting higher when water in cells is structurally modified, and it is regarded as having relation with the suppression of metabolism and diffusion coefficient of substrates is lowered and the reacting rate of ferment is decreased thereby. In this paper, the examples of applying the consideration of suppressing the ferment reaction by structurally modified water to the freshness maintenance are described. Same effect of metabolism-suppression is confirmed in eggplant, Japanese persimmon and cut flowers, but the mechanism thereof is not clarified yet. Additionally, the effect of the structurally modified water as to suppress hyperplasia of bacteria is clarified by adhesive bacteria of bean sprouts. 19 refs., 4 figs.

Quantitative relationship between the allophane clay minerals in the Kanto Loam is cited to describe the relationship between their stratigraphic features and geotechnical features. The Kanto Loam is a soil of weathered Diluvial volcanic ash deposited on hills and plateaus. The Tachikawa loam is the newest, followed by the Musashino loam, Shimosueyoshi loam, and Tama loam, named in the order from new to old. The Tachikawa and Musashino loams are relatively new loams formed approximately several tens of thousand years ago, and are different from each other in the percentage of allophanes (Ap), which is 50% or higher for the Tachikawa loam and 40% or lower for the Musashino loam, and in the equivalent liquid limit (Ap equivalent index number), which is 115% or higher for the Tachikawa loam and 105% or lower for the Musashino loam. The new loam behaves like the Ap-governed volcanic ash while the old loam behaves like the alluvial clay. There is a linear, proportional relationship between Ap of the new loam and the geotechnical index number. The physical and dynamic behavior of the new loam is all under control of the aggregate structure formed of allophanic clay minerals, the loam behaving like sand when not disturbed and like clay when disturbed. The physical and dynamic properties are also discussed. 6 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.

How should be robots and what type of mind should be given to robots in the distant future when robot would acquire highly advanced intelligence? Researchers should consider these issues as the clarification of the future image of robots is important to make sure the goal of the development of robots. The author presents his own view on these issues. He argues that famous three principles on robots by Isaac Asimov have a fundamental misunderstanding and a robot evolved as a machine is a completely different being from organisms and does not need to have self-preservation desire. In order to new action norms of robots, the game of prisoners dilemma, relation of the Tit for Tat strategy in the experiment by R. Axelrod with morality and ethnology are examined. As a result, morality is considered to be able to be treated by engineering methodology and an idea of the engineering of morality is advanced. A new action norm, that a robot should act morally, is presented. As a concrete example, this paper indicates individual action norm on automated guided vehicles of group robots. 4 refs., 4 figs.

Study was made on the effect of exposure to diesel emissions on inflammatory cells in a rat lungs. Four kinds of exposure gases with different contents of NO2 and particulate were prepared by diluting diesel emissions. Rats were exposed to diluted diesel emissions for 24 months, and inflammatory cells were detected morphologically in light microscopic and TEM specimens. As a result, particle-laden- alveolar macrophages increased dose- and time-dependently into the submucosa of intrapulmonary bronchioles, alveolar spaces and interstitume of alveolar walls, and bronchoassociated lymphatic tissues. Mast cells infiltrated into the interspaces of epithelial cells in airways. In the submucosa of the terminal bronchioles and the interstitume of alveolar walls, some sorts of inflammatory cells such as mast cells, plasma cells, neutrophils and lymphocytes infiltrated, and some cells showed cell-to-cell contacts. However, the airways were rarely injured by infiltration of inflammatory cells except for a fibrotic change. 2 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.

With an objective to promote technological developments smoothly, surveys and discussions were given on how the improvements in intellectual foundations are worked out inside and outside the country. In surveying the status of improving the databases inside and outside the country, it was disclosed that the databases both inside and outside the country are arranged under the auspices of the governments. The reason for this is considered because the intellectual foundation improvement is difficult to be established as a business. In order to structure a framework to put together and publicize the data including those possessed by the private sector, surveys and discussions were given on the interest among titles to intellectual properties, contractual relationship between the database improving parties and the data providing parties, relationship with taxation systems, and how the incentives should be provided for publicizing the data. In discussing a model case to utilize data acquired by the private sector, it was concluded that assistance by the governments is indispensable for the organizations for structuring and maintaining the databases to continue their activities independently. Among the data measured and managed at the national level, problems in the publicizing method thereof were discussed especially on the data related to ocean information. (NEDO)

As to the research on the superconductor manifestation mechanism, Y123 monocrystal which was partially replaced with Zn and Ni was manufactured, and it was made clear that the addition of these impurities greatly change anisotropy of superconductors. It was made clear that instability of lattice and magnetism is included in high temperature superconductor. Also made clear was an important role in the Nb/Ba replacement in existence of magnetic flux melting phase transfer and the magnetic field induced pinning effect. The manufacture of Y123 bicrystal membrane was successful by the liquid phase epitaxy method. The manufacture of non-copper base K-Bi-O new superconductor was successful by the ultra-high pressure synthesis method. The stabilized process was established for large size crystals of 15-20mm square in Y base and of 20-25mm square in Nd base. Also successful was the growth by LPE method of crystal with thick membrane of 20mm x 20mm x 10{mu}m on the MgO monocrystal substrate. The non-bicrystalization of Y base Nd base monocrystal was successful, and the peak phenomenon control in Jc-H was found out. By neutron irradiation, the acquisition magnetic field of 3.7T at 77K was achieved using bulk Y base 123 material with diameter of 3cm. And, the critical current density of 60,000 A/cm{sup 2} was achieved at 77K and 3T. (NEDO)

This paper describes the technology development by which biomass is produced by treatment of pollutants using microalgae, and is recycled. A bioreactor system has been developed, in which microalgal biomass can be obtained through the effective treatment of CO2 and NOx using microalgae having ability of increase under the severe condition with simultaneous flow of CO2 and NOx. A new method has been also developed for separating and recovering the microalgae. Materials, such as glucose, glycerol, acetic acid, and lactic acid, were produced from the obtained biomass through physico-chemical and biological treatments. Development of nenroactive materials to improve neuronal defects is one of the most important subjects in Japan that will soon become a aging society. In this project, basic research for neuroactive molecule was performed to develop technology for neuronal regeneration, regulation of synaptic activity and interface between artificial surface and living neurons. A novel neurite promoting factor was discovered and its cDNA was cloned. Mutagenesis in vitro showed that a functional region of this factor located in a polypeptide of less than 50 aminoacids. Using neuronal culture, synapse formation was found to depend on two modes of activities and long-lasting synaptic potentiation was demonstrated to depend on a macromolecules released from pre- or postsynaptic neurons. To regulate nervous activities, photoactivated caged-peptide was developed and confirmed to change in affinity to its receptor. Neurons were cultured on substrates paterned by microlithography. For the development of working conditions fit for aged people and devices for them to operate, their visual function and behavioral characteristics are measured and analyzed. In the study of visual functions, 50 people from local cities and regions and another 50 from Osaka and its neighboring cities are subjected to measurement regarding visual acuity required in daily life, color discrimination, dark adaptation, glare, and the like. In the study of performing characteristics, 500 people are subjected to measurement regarding the scope of movement of upper limbs, their reach, and skillfulness with which the people can move fingers. When brightness, luminance, and contrast are caused to change relative to letters and background, aging is found to exert a great influence on the ease of reading, dark adaptation, and glare. As for the upper limb work range and reachability and the skillfulness in finger movement, it is found that aging narrows down the tolerant work area, lowers the working pace, and greatly affects skillfulness depending on the device operating method, all these disclosing actualities of difference attributable to age and sex. Concerning the device operating position and the ease of device operating force application, new measuring and evaluating methods are worked out, and correlations between the contents of operation and the operating position are seized. When fluid production from a geothermal reservoir is started, fluid inflow from the reservoir surroundings and reduction zones starts following a pressure decrease in the production zone. For grasping the conditions of a reservoir after the start of production, a geophysical monitoring technique attracts attention. It is an indirect technique compared with drilling observation, but it will be more widely used in the future in grasping macroscopic variation in relation with thermal energy production. This paper describes a monitoring technique on the basis of gravity and natural electric potential as well as an analytical technique on the basis of a reservoir mathematical model. NEDO is presently engaging in by the schedule of 1997-2004. As the results of this project, it is expected that analytical techniques to apply various monitoring techniques and obtained data to history matching are developed as practical techniques. (NEDO)

Investigations were given on nanocrystals of CuCl and CdTe with regard to their nonlinear optical mechanism. The experiment used a femto-second pump probe spectroscope. The experiment on CuCl nanocrystals revealed the following facts: in the case where one photon is absorbed into one nanocrystal, cascade mitigation occurs to the pair of electrons and holes, and exciters; and in the case where two photons are absorbed into one nanocrystal, exciter molecules are made via the pair of electrons and holes and the exciters. Thus, it was found that the optical nonlinearity occurs when more than two photons are absorbed into one nanocrystal, and inter-exciter interactions and formation of the exciter molecules are the physical causes thereof. The experiment on CdTe nanocrystals indicated that electrons and holes produced by laser beam are distributed instantaneously between the size-quantized discrete levels, and that temperature in the electron system drops with lapse of time. 9 refs., 6 figs.

As part of validation processes of in vitro toxicity assays for the risk assessment of environmental hazards, we applied an in vitro toxicity test using two human cell lines, neuroblastoma NB-1 cells and glioblastoma U-87 MG cells, to the assessment of organochlorine compounds detected in the water environment. The in vitro toxicity assay using NB-1 cells was calibrated by testing reference chemicals proposed by MEIC (Multicenter Evaluation of In Vitro Cytotoxicity), an international program for the validation of in vitro cytotoxicity assays. Beforehand, an assay using cells in frozen stock without subcultivation was examined by comparing IC50 values with the ordinary assay using subcultured cells. IC50 values for MEIC reference chemicals from the former assay showed good correlation with those from the latter assay, suggesting that the assay using cells in frozen stock can be used at least for the assessment of basal cytotoxicity. IC50 values for ten organochlorine compounds frequently detected in the sediment samples from contaminated rivers, p-chloroaniline, 3,4-dichloroaniline, p-dichlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, Tris (2-chloroethyl)-phosphate, 2,5-dichlorophenol, 2,5-dichloroanisol, Triclosan and Triclocarban, were obtained with the in vitro assays and compared with their LD50 values in rats. No significant correlation, however, was seen between the IC50 and LD50 values, indicating that further improvement of in vitro toxicity assays is necessary for the application to the risk assessment of environmental hazards. 7 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

By administering in vivo by using jointly with cleaning agent which is a kind of anticancer drug, Z-GlyPhe (Benzyloxycarbonyl-{sup L}-glycyl-{sup L}-phenylalanine) the disruption to the normal cell by the cleaning agent is shielded and has the action in which only the cancer cell is destroyed. Since equilibrium in reaction inclines toward the peptide decomposition side, in this study, the. Yield is about 10% of the some, when this peptide was enzymatically synthesized in. aqueous medium which examined the efficient and connected synthesis of cell disruption shielding peptide precursor (Z-GlyPheOMe) using the biocatalyst action of the enzyme. However, peptide is distributed at the organic solvent phase in the water/biphasic organic-aqueous system, since it is a nonionic material in the molecular structure without leaving group. With the enzyme reaction in water phase, by selectively separating the extraction to organic phase, equilibrium in reaction in water phase was improved, and close 100% high yield was achieved got. Co-Cr alloy, SUS 316L stainless steel, pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V ELI have been used as implant materials. Ti-6Al-4V ELI has been most widely used as an implant material to date because of its excellent combination of biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Since toxicity of V etc., and high moduli of elasticity have been pointed out, {beta}-type biomedical titanium alloys are recently getting much attentions, New {beta}-type biomedical titanium alloys composed of non-toxic elements such as Nb, Ta, Mo, Zr and Sn with lower moduli of elasticity and greater strength were, therefore, designed using alloy design method based on the d-electron theory in this study. Tensile test, measurement of modulus of elasticity and evaluation of biocompatibility were conducted in order to investigate the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the designed alloy. Tensile strength and elongation of Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr are, in particular, equivalent to those of conventional biomedical titanium alloy such as Ti-6Al-4V ELI, and modulus of elasticity of Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr is lower than that of Ti-6Al-4V ELI. The moduli of elasticity of the designed alloys are equivalent or lower comparing with those of conventional biomedical titanium alloys such as Ti-6Al-4V ELI and Ti-13Nb--13Zr. The biocomparibility of Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr is equivalent to pure-Ti, and biocompatibility of Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr is much greater than that of Ti-6Al-4V. The new {beta}-type titanium alloy, Ti-Nb-Ta-Zr, designed in this study is expected to have greater performance for implant materials. (author)

Efforts were made to develop a microanalysis system of cell information. In the development of element technologies, technologies of CGH (comparative genome hybridization) analysis and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) microarrays were studied, and it became feasible to detect information on intercellular molecule anomalies, probably to serve as cancer markers, at the chromosome level. In the research on the total system, a 2nd protocol apparatus was designed, built, and evaluated, and target goals involving size reduction and optical detection and isolation capabilities were achieved. In the evaluation of scattered light, the relationship between diameter size and forward scatter light intensity was confirmed using human peripheral blood lymphocytes and cultured cells, which enabled cell identification. In the measurement of the two parameters of forward scatter and side scatter, lymphocytes were clearly isolated from granulocytes/thrombocytes, which made feasible the independent analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes. Thanks to the 2-parameter measurement, isolation of live cells from dead cells became available. (NEDO)

Researches have been made to increase density of 200,000-kW class generator and to increase capacity of 600,000-kW class generator necessary for putting superconducting generator into practical use. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 2000. In the study of increasing densities of superconductors and field windings, strands were fabricated, in which aging heat treatment conditions, number of aging, and processing degrees between each aging were varied, to increase the critical current of Nb-Ti strand, wherein as high critical current as corresponding to about 90% of the target was obtained. Possibility of increasing the critical current with the final processing degree in the range of 4 to 5 was verified from the relationship between the final processing degree and the critical current. In the study of increasing capacities of superconductors and field windings, findings were acquired on enhancement of conductor stability and reduction in AC loss, with regard to superconductor strands well balanced in the two elements. Prospects were obtained in achieving the AC loss of 200 kW/m{sup 3} in the targeted superconductor. The residual resistance ratio was found to be 200, showing sufficiently high value, and sufficient function was verified in the stabilized copper. In the research of design technologies, primary basic design was performed. (NEDO)

This paper introduces the circumstances and purpose of establishing the Basic Research Associate for Innovated Coal Utilization (BRAIN-C) Program started in October 1995, and the summary of the results therefrom in fiscal 1995. Although development of coal utilization technologies has been implemented over a number of years, there are many problems still requiring solutions. Early realization has been urged on diversification of coal utilization, acceleration of technological development and diversification of coal types. In order to achieve these goals, the necessity was recognized afresh on not only the hardwares, but also on basic technologies in terms of software which can identify properties of coals, systematize different reactions, and estimate reactions, fluidity and heat transmission of coals. Therefore, receiving a subsidy from the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, a research and development program to be implemented jointly by industries, administrative agencies and academic societies had been started with a five-year plan for the time being. With the activities for the program such as collecting 50 to 100 types of coals and supplying them to researchers, the program had been accelerated in fiscal 1995 on a large number of themes and results therefrom, including fundamental properties and thermo-chemical reactions. 2 figs., 4 tabs.

The deep-sea manganese nodule mining system in this report collects efficiently and continuously a large quantity of manganese nodules in existence in the 5,000m-deep sea floor. The aim of the project is to develop and build an experimental system for a real mining machine and to perform a comprehensive marine test to find out if such a real machine is technologically and economically feasible. The system under this project is divided into four systems, which are a nodule mining system, nodule lifting system, nodule handling system, and a measurement control system. The nodule mining system travels on the sea bottom efficiently collecting manganese nodules and forwarding them into the nodule lifting system. Only a few systems of this kind have so far been developed, however, and therefore much endeavor needs to be exerted for the development of technologies involved. The nodule lifting system is divided into a pump lift unit, air lift unit, and a nodule lifting pipe. The pump lift unit and air lift unit elevate manganese nodules supplied from the nodule collecting unit to the sea surface. The nodule lifting pipe provides a passage for nodules to run through upward. (NEDO)

The temperature distribution at the center of each ceramic substrate is larger than that in each ceramic substrate at steady state in the case of 3 substrates were fired. The temperature distribution becomes narrow by using a high thermal conductivity material setter or inserting heat insulating material between the bottom setter and the furnace floor. The temperature distribution in each ceramic substrate is closely related to the distance between the surface of the ceramic substrate and the bottom of the upper setter. (author)

Since light can be transformed into electricity, electrolysis of water using light is possible naturally, and photosynthesis in the nature is based on this principle. The reaction field in which electrochemical energy necessary for decomposition of water is generated using light at the first process of photosynthesis is a biofilm less than 10nm thick which is called thylakoid film. In this article, the effects are roughly explained which have been made for constructing an artificial system corresponding to the thylakoid film. Accumulation of knowledge of the molecular level is necessary for the construction of the artificial system and the three dimensional structure concerning the reaction center of photosynthetic bacteria has been determined. At the reaction center, oxidation species of electron donor and reduction species of electron acceptor are generated by charge separation which succeeds electron excitation by light energy. In order to lead the above process to materialistic production, efforts are being made for construction of a reaction center model compound for artificial photosynthesis from both physical chemistry and organic chemistry and the positive results have steadily been obtained in the development of photocatalysis of a semiconductor. 9 figs.

Japan has to prepare itself to behave accurately, and to stay technologically competitive, in the severe competition age to come in which it will fail to find leaders to follow. To fulfill this goal, Japan has to collect sufficient information and analyze it relative to the current state and future prospect of industrial technologies in Japan and overseas and various factors that will influence them, and to develop industrial technology related policies based firmly on scientific and theoretical foundations to be established using the thus-acquired knowledge. Under the circumstances, a survey is conducted of innovative, technological foundations, such as industrial technology related efforts in and out of Japan. The report consists of two volumes that cover what are described below. For the survey of technology related policies pursued in various countries abroad, literature and the like are investigated concerning technology related measures, budgets, and decision making processes in America, Britain, Germany, France, and the European Union, and the results are compiled so that their systems may be compared with each other. In the survey of Japan's technology related innovative systems, case studies are made about commodities over which Japan is relatively high in competitive power. Specifically, commodities manufactured by Japan's businesses and occupying 75% or more of the global share are investigated. (NEDO)

Basic technologies are established that equip polymeric materials (insulators in general) with conductivity similar to that of metals for the realization of novel conducting materials characterized by light weight, high resistance to corrosion, and ease of machining, and for the manufacture of novel electrical/electronic materials having new functions different from those of conventionally used metals. The aims are to realize a conductivity of 10{sup 5}S/cm or more, to manufacture materials sufficiently stable when left in the ordinary or inert atmosphere, and to manufacture materials which may be machined into proper shapes as required in the industry. The results of the 10-year-long development endeavor greatly contribute to the creation of high-level materials, the systematization of technologies, and the elucidation of the conducting mechanism. In relation to polymeric materials, in particular, a new technology is developed that equips, with high reproducibility, polymeric materials with conductivity similar to that of silver or copper; a graphitic material is created for the first time provided with conductivity superior to that of metals; and conducting polymeric materials are equipped with an easy-to-machine feature. A great contribution is accomplished to the production of superconductivity in organic charge-transfer complex crystals and to the elucidation of the conducting mechanism. (NEDO)

With an objective of realizing super large capacity recording technologies largely exceeding the current limits of optical recording and magnetic recording, studies were conducted on application of near-field optics. In the study on recording by using near-field light, it was verified that a mark with approximately the same size as an aperture diameter can be formed on a phase change recording film when a fiber probe with an aperture diameter of about 200 nm is used. However, it was found that the recording using this system takes excessive amount of time. When laser light collected on an objective lens was irradiated pulse-wise, a mark with a minimum width of about 20 nm was observed with high contrast. This will mean that a record with recording density of one terabit/in {sup 2} can be read out. Other studies performed include those on evaluation of effects of polarized light and surface shape on near-field read-out, simulation, mechanism of crystallization in a phase change recording film, recording and playback with ultra-high resolution by using a conformable near-field aperture, fabrication of a flat aperture type near-field light probe array, and the evaluation thereon. 22 refs., 27 figs.

The mind-based technology (MBT) was investigated to be developed, for materializing the world where the human race and machinery live together without sense of incompatibility. Based on the human mind, the MBT is a technology to support the personal expression which respects the value judgment, diversity and individuality in the human life. For it, it is important to technologically comprehend the human mind and physiological/psychological state, and particularly, control the human will. In order to structure the social system in which the human race and technology live together, it is also important to build a life system information processing model which simulates the formation process to integrate the feeling, knowledge and conscience, together with an action system to be established. As an image to which the MBT is applied, support will be extended to the life fulfillment, personal expression and hearty communication. Development is expected toward the social security technology with robots living in the human society. Pursuing the mental richness and worthwhile life, the high-grade mature society needs the technology to communicate with the machinery gentle to the human race on the mutual interface. 21 refs., 8 figs.

From the survey, the following conclusions were obtained. As to the coal which China uses as a main energy for maintaining the present high economic growth as targeted, there will remain the coal transportation problem between production site (north and west) and consumption site (east and south) still in the future (in 2000 and 2010). China is now facing with a big turning point in a socioeconomic aspect. The advancing opening market policy brought steep rises in energy prices such as coal and electric power, which is affecting various fields. Further, the energy related laws, which were unprepared, are abruptly being prepared, and the environment for the introduction of foreign investment, which is expected to be accelerated, is being prepared. In the future, attention should be paid to environmental problems such as air pollution, acid rain and global warming. 48 figs., 96 tabs.

Focusing on the present status and future of coal demand in Central/South American countries and the coal trade between Central/South American countries and the U.S., the paper described the present status and future of coal demand there and the effects on Japan. Export of Colombian coal will amount to approximately 30-35 million tons in 2000. Venezuelan coal 10-20 million tons. The U.S. imported good-quality general coal low in sulfur content, 3.08 tons from Columbia and 1.39 tons from Venezuela. Coal export from the U.S. to Central/South America was mostly of raw material coal, 5 million tons in 1993 and 5.39 million tons in 1994. General coal was 180,000 tons. The U.S. has no plans of increasing US coal export to Central/South America. But it is safely predicted that Columbia and Venezuela will increase coal export to Europe in the future. It will bring about decrease in export of US coal to Europe, which connects with increasing pressure for the coal trade amount of Japan. 21 figs., 47 tabs.

This paper shows the impact of the irradiation from an additional light source during the deposition of hydrogenated amorphous silicon by photo-CVD deposition. Using a mercury sensitized photo-CVD process from Disilan (Si {sub 2} H {sub 6}) and hydrogen, silicon was deposited. A 40W low pressure mercury lamp was applied as the light source. A portion of the substrate was in addition irradiated using an Xg-He lamp through a thermal filter. Irradiation of the substrate using only Xg-He lamp produced no deposition, since this light has a wavelength which is too long to produce the SiH {sub 3}-radicals needed for Si deposition. The additional Xg-He light source was discovered to cause an increased thickness of deposited a-Si:H film and a transmission of the band structure. The reasons of these are considered that the influence of irradiation is not limited to film thickness, but that irradiation also impacts the composition of the a-Si:H film so as to cause a reduction in the hydrogen content. 10 figs., 1 tab.

High-Performance Na{sup +}, K{sup +} and Cl{sup -} ion selective electrodes (ISEs) are reported. These are based on a new concept, which is an ion recognition site formed by molecular interaction. In the case of Na and K ISEs, crown ether compounds connecting with planar substituents were used as the ionophores. The selectivities depend on the structure of substituents. It is found that the intermolecular interaction of the planar substituent plays an important role on the improvement of selectivity. The selectivities of interactive mono (crown ether) are equal to that of bis (crown ether). It means that ion recognition site like a bis (crown ether) is formed by the interaction of mono (crown ehter)s. In the case of C1 ISE, immobilized synthetic bilayer membrane with quaternary ammonium salts was used as the ion sensitive membrane. in the immobilized synthetic bilayer membrane, ordered molecular aggregates is formed. It is found that the molecular orientation improved the Cl selectivity. The insufficient selectivity over lipophilic anions can be addition of alphatic alcohol. These resulting ISEs exhibit high speed response and long life time, and they are applicable to clinical use which demands both accurate measurement and high speed processing. (author)

For the enhancement of separation process efficiency and energy efficiency in the chemical industry, etc., basic technologies are developed involving high-performance separation membrane materials which are excellent in durability and usable in the field where separation by membranes has been impractical. The liquid mixtures subjected to separation are a neutral organic compound/water system, an acidic organic compound/water system, and a polar organic compound/water system; the gas mixtures subjected to separation are an oxygen/nitrogen system and a carbon monoxide/nitrogen system. After a 10-year/3-phase development endeavors, the initially intended goals are sufficiently achieved. Among those that have to be mentioned is the development of a nonaqueous separation membrane, a supported liquid membrane with amino acid optically active high performance separation capability, a high-precision evaluation unit for gas separation membrane characteristics, a selective permeation membrane with high-level oxygen and carbon monoxide carriers and reactivation technology, a high-performance ethanol separation membrane, a water/polar organic compound separation membrane, and a water/acetic acid separation membrane and stability providing technology. It is intended to achieve ultra-high permeation rate on a TCO substrate to improve stabilization efficiency of amorphous solar cells, and to develop substrate materials stable under plasma exposure and effective in reducing defect density in order to obtain amorphous layers with less photo-deterioration. Studies have been made on change in light inducing structure associated with photo-deterioration in amorphous silicon. With an objective to elucidate and suppress the photo-deterioration mechanism in an amorphous solar cell, discussions were given on structural change associated with the light induced defect generation. The light-heat pending spectroscopy was used as the method, which can detect volumetric expansion in a thin film at high sensitivity and detect the pending displacement at resolution of several ten angstroms. Furthermore, discussions were given on light conduction, defect density, and correlation of test samples with internal stress. The light induced structural change in a-Si:H was observed in the form of light induced expansion. As a result of investigating the time lapse in the light induced expansion and light induced defect generation, it was found that the light induced structural change is closely related with generation of the light induction. The Yoshino river is one of the most prominent rivers in Japan, representing the Shikoku district, with the trunk length of 194km and the basin of 3,750km{sup 2} extending in 4 prefectures in the district. The upstream area includes areas where the average annual rainfalls exceed 3,000mm, being famous as a high-rain zone. The basic water level stream is 24,000m{sup 3} s which is one of the largest in Japan. Schistosity develops with the Sambagawa metamorphic rocks, which tend to be easily weathered. As a result, there are many landslide spots distributed in the Sambagawa belt. The Shikoku district as a whole has one fifth of the landslide dangerous areas of Japan. Countermeasure activities against landslides were initiated in 1982 in Tokushima and Kochi prefectures. Outlines of landslides in those areas, underground structure, activity of landsliding, countermeasure activity against landslides, and the result of the activity are introduced. 12 figs.

To take up methodology of quality engineering as ISO standards, the basic document was worked out which regulates general items for the method to evaluate the operation of various systems as function for proposal to ISO. A method is developed for evaluating the design quality by function and predicting/optimizing the quality of finished products. For the evaluation of slippage from ideal function, the SN ratio and Maharanobis`s distance are used. In the two basic working groups (WG), a document on general methods to evaluate function was made. To reinforce the basic document, WGs divided into five by content/business were set up. Each WG collected examples from the past, studied methods to evaluate function in each field, and recorded them in the document. Five experiments for each WG were conducted to verify effectiveness of the above-mentioned method to evaluate function recorded in the document. As a result, the draft to present to ISO was worked out since the experimental WGs proved the effectiveness of the method to evaluate function in each field. 85 refs., 147 figs., 185 tabs.

  14. Tradition, Modernity and the Role of Confucianism in the Creation of the Japanese Nation-State

    2016-05-01

Full Text Available The paper explores the development of Confucian thought in Japan, showing that Confucianism, with its key concept of the Way, remained the foundation of Japanese intellectual circles even as it underwent numerous transformations and reinterpretations. The universal Way as a natural Principle was transformed into a product of the sages within the framework of the kogaku school, whereas the kokugaku school applied the concept of the Way to the Japanese Shinto tradition. The adherents of the rangaku school, on the other hand, adopted Western science and technology in the Confucian intellectual universe. The new nation-state built by the Meiji revolutionaries thus became a mixture of all these intellectual currents. The Meiji state was a modern, industrial and technologically advanced state that identified itself with the imperial system and native Shinto tradition while being held together institutionally by a firm Confucian ideology.

Researches have been conducted on deca-nano quantum integrating transistor substrate technologies, and developments were made on a three-dimensional device simulator which can be used in deca-nano domains, and a circuit simulator to have quantifying function transistors coexist with silicon semiconductor integrated circuits. The researches were intended to develop a simulator capable of analyzing properties of very small silicon and compound semiconductor devices in deca-nano domains. The researches discussed the applicability of conventional simulators, calculated quantum levels in a three-dimensional hetero structure, and resulted in development of an electron wave propagation simulator in optional two-dimensional shapes, a quantum Monte Carlo simulator, and a three-dimensional semiconductor device simulator with quantum correction. On the other hand, in order to estimate characteristics of a hybrid circuit in which single electron transistors coexist with conventional transistors such as CMOS transistors, a single electron hybrid circuit simulator was developed. The development indicated that a CMOS-SET fused memory is promising as a future LSI memory. 22 refs., 116 figs., 3 tabs.

The Saitama prefectural government has been conducting basement structure exploration using the spatial autocorrelation method by dividing the entire plain area into meshes, for the purpose of improving the accuracy of estimating large-scale seismic damages. This paper reports the result of explorations on meshes in the east-west direction in the central part of Saitama Prefecture. The present exploration was intended on ten meshes in the east-west direction along the north latitude 36-degree line. The number of exploration points is 13 comprising three points on the hilly area bordering on the eastern edge of the Kanto mountainous area and ten points on the plain area. The arrangement constitutes a traverse line with a total distance of about 33 km from the west edge (Hatoyama-machi in Saitama Prefecture) to the east edge (Noda City in Chiba Prefecture). The phase velocities were estimated from the result of the array microtremor observations using the spatial autocorrelation method applied with the FET. The phase velocities were used to estimate underground structures by using an inverse analysis. As a result, detailed two-dimensional S-wave velocity structures were revealed on the traverse line. The velocity cross section expresses change in the basement structures with sufficient resolution, and at the same time the information is judged highly harmonious with existing deep boring data and the result of artificial earthquake exploration. 15 refs., 6 figs.

Activities were conducted for (1) proposing that some items in software comply with a standard format to be commonly used by plural personal computer programs in the field of the key technology of color image management and for (2) placing before ISO (International Organization for Standardization) a standardization proposal and a standard format proposal involving characters and character baselines in the field of research and development of standard data for diversification of international information interchange. Under Item (1), submission of a proposal was adjourned because the standard of color expression in Asian countries was insufficient and involved many problems requiring careful attention. The problems were whether the color names were suitable for the users, that the color names other than those specified by JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) Z8102 were equivocal and needed proper notations, and whether color names to use with displays or the like were to be defined independently from JIS. Under Item (2), the problem of metric information standardization surfaced because it was supposed that mixing JIS fonts with other countries' fonts would give rise to problems. As for the character size, it is 10 points, more or less, in all the countries and therefore it does not make difficult the exchange of information under the Web environments. The results will be reported and explained to the departments concerned and to the Asian countries. (NEDO)

In consideration of the coal situation in the Asia/Pacific region, a study was made of effects of the expansion of coal trade by IPP on supply/demand of general coal in Asia. When aggregating increases in demand of general coal for electric power use in ten Asian counties, they will be an increase of 130.75 million tons in 2005 over 1997. Fifty nine percent of it is equivalent to the increase by IPP and exceeds the demand expanded by electric utilities operators. Further, a possibility is predicted of contracts and coal quality being different from until now. However, there will be a lot of cases in which plans of constructing power plants in Asia are not so developed as expected except Japan, Korea and Taiwan, and also the effect of the currency crisis starting in Thailand largely affects. In terms of the coal supply, countries which export general coal are only China and Indonesia. Indonesian coal is expanding its production and export rapidly and remarkably. The environmental control in Asia has been tightening, and the fuel selected by IPP is mainly coal rather than natural gas. 40 refs., 94 figs., 179 tabs.

This study is intended to establish a basic technology for innovative high-efficiency separation membrane materials that can be used in areas in which application of membrane separation has been impossible. The water/ethanol separation membrane (for water selective permeation) and water/acetic acid separation membrane (for water selective permeation) achieved separation coefficient and permeation velocity of the world's highest level. The water/ethanol separation membrane (for ethanol selective permeation), although its separation coefficient is lower than the world's highest performance, has high permeation velocity, providing the performance of the worldwide level as seen from the comprehensive viewpoint. The carbon monoxide/nitrogen separation membrane achieved separation coefficient and permeation velocity of the world's highest level. The oxygen/nitrogen separation membrane requires further enhancement in the permeation velocity and stability. Establishment has been performed on separation technologies for membrane separation of non-water soluble aqueous solutions, optical division by using chiral crown ether, high-performance liquid separation by means of plasma surface treatment, and particle separation. Basic analysis has been advanced also on evaluation technologies for gaseous body separation membrane and liquid separation membrane, of which future progress is expected. (NEDO)

To investigate applicability of the spatial autocorrection method which is a microtremors exploration method for the estimation of basement structure, array measurements of microtremors were performed using the Iwatsuki and Shimosa deep borehole observatory where detailed structures were clarified as well as the Fuchu and Koto deep borehole observatory. In this study, estimated velocity structures of S-wave were compared with the geological sequence and results of acoustic velocity logging. The phase velocity was estimated by the spatial autocorrection method using FFT. The phase velocity with a smooth normal dispersion was observed in the periodic range from 0.5 to 5 sec in Iwatsuki, and from 0.5 to 4 sec in Shimosa by the combination of four-point circular arrays with radii of 100, 300, and 600 m. The underground structures estimated from the phase velocities coincided well with the geological sequence, and results of acoustic velocity logging and velocity logging for each borehole. For the Iwatsuki borehole, the basement velocity was also estimated properly in the periodic range of observation. While, for the Shimosa borehole, measurements with the period around 6 sec were required to estimate the basement velocity more accurately. 13 refs., 11 figs., 1 tab.

Subbituminous coal of the Powder River coal field in the west of the U.S. is abundant, about 1/3 in the U.S. in reserve and about 1/4 in production. It is predicted that supply/demand of general coal will be tight from now up to the coming year of 2000 in the Pacific rim region including Japan as center, and therefore, if Japan imports in large quantity the subbituminous coal which exists abundantly and has a great potentiality of the expanding production quantity, Japan can contribute greatly to loosening the supply/demand of general coal in the Pacific rim region. However, there are some problems on the following: long inland transportation distance of more than 2000km, heavy burden of railroad fare, and coal quality, namely high water content, low calorific value, and low ash melting point of the coal being low in sulfur and ash. Accordingly, surveyed were on what level the cost of supply to Japan will be as compared with Australian coal, and whether there is a possibility of import of the subbituminous coal in large quantity at a competitive price. As to the potential import to Japan, the import of this coal will be 2.025 million tons/year at maximum in 2000 if the railroad price is reduced 20% and the blending of 30% at maximum can be realized at the Soma Kyodo Thermal Power Plant. 34 figs., 48 tabs.

It is known that infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) on semiconductor or insulator surfaces becomes practicable by using buried metal layer (BML) substrates, in which the metal thin film is buried order semiconductor or insulator films. In this work, IRAS has been measured for Langmuir-Blodgett films deposited on the BML substrate with SiO2/Al/Si(100) structure and the observed spectrum intensity has been quantitatively compared with the calculation assuming the ideal multilayer structure for the BML substrate. The BML-IRAS using CoSi2 has been adopted to the detection of SiHn on the Si (100) substrate during synchrotron radiation (SR) stimulated Si2H6 gas source molecular beam epitaxy. It has been found that SiH2 and SiH3 on the Si (100) surface are easily decomposed by SR, but SiH can`t be decomposed. From these experiments, it has been concluded that the BML-IRAS is an useful in situ observation technique for the photo-stimulated surface reactions. 26 refs., 9 figs.

The research objective is the development of environmentally benign coal liquefaction technology and the studies on internationalization of coal liquefaction technology. Implemented for the former are (1) research on improvement and rationalization of liquefaction process and (2) research on advancement of liquefaction base technology. In (1), studies were made on in-oil preprocessing technology and scale suppressing measures for the purpose of obtaining reform/high grade of coal, and on improvement of liquefied oil collecting ratio, sophistication of coal slurry and attainment of light oil/high grade from liquefied crude oil for the purpose of optimizing liquefaction reactive conditions and improving a solvent. In (2), in developing high activity/high dispersion type new catalysts, catalytic sufurization behavior and activity manifestation mechanism were explored, as were iron hydroxide based iron ore properties and liquefaction reactive characteristics. The initial reactive characteristics of liquefaction for example were investigated for the purpose of collecting basic data for expanding kinds of coal. In order to attain the latter objective of the research, a feasibility study of liquefaction location was conducted, as were the investigation including sampling of iron ore for catalytic material and the investigation of coal gasification technology. Research, development and evaluation were performed with an objective of establishing the basic technology related to light-reactive materials that control the structures and status of aggregation of molecules by using actions of light, and can be used for ultra-high density recording, high resolution indication and light switches. In elucidating the mechanism of light deterioration reaction of photochromic molecules, it was disclosed that 6-nitrospirobenzopyran has the light deterioration caused from the excitation triplet state. This disclosure presents a possibility of preventing the light deterioration. New derivatives that show photochromism were synthesized, and thin films were produced by using the LB process. This indicates a possibility of producing the photochromic materials as the high multiplex recording material. With regard to PHB materials, an evaluation technology having spectrum resolution of the world's highest level was established and measurements were performed. Hole formation was verified for the first time in the world at the temperature higher than the liquid nitrogen temperature by using a PHB material of ionic porphin/polyvinyl alcohol systems. This verification indicates a feasibility of practically usable PHB materials. (NEDO)

It is intended to establish an energy saving type mass production technology to manufacture solar cell substrates by using the electromagnetic casting process. This paper describes the achievements in fiscal 1997. Preliminary experiments were performed for high-performance slicing processing and post-slicing rinsing to reduce the cost by enhancing productivity in the slicing process. Since there is a problem of mixing of contaminating raw materials due to diversification in raw materials, resistance and impurity concentration must be determined on each raw material as the materials for the Czochralski method. Then, the raw materials are sorted out referring to the determination results, and they can be used for the electromagnetic casting process upon optimizing them. As a result of having sliced an ingot of 15-cm square with a length of 40 cm by using a mass-production wire saw, an accuracy of 22.8 {mu}m was attained as intra-face variance when the required cutting time was 476 minutes and the substrate thickness is 348 {mu}, thus having obtained prospect for achieving the standard. Development was made on a water jetting rough cleaning machine to separate and remove slurries (oil and grinding particles) from the substrates after slicing, and an arm robot to accommodate substrates into cassettes, which provided processing velocity of 9 second per substrate. A problem of raising the speed remains to be solved. (NEDO)

The first term has performed research and development placing emphasis on that 'the basic study on membrane separation is to be performed systematically to elucidate governing factors in membrane separation'. With respect to water/ethanol separation by using the penetration gasifying method, it was indicated that excellent separation performance can be exhibited by using natural polymers having sugar chain skeleton as a raw material, and by controlling the membrane structure by means of membrane manufacturing methods. For enhancement of performance in water selective permeation type separation membrane, it was shown experimentally that it is important to select a membrane suitable for the object of separation and a separation method that uses the selected membrane. Regarding the water/ethanol separation, it was shown theoretically that the penetration gasifying method can save more energy than the conventional distillation method, where the development target was presented. It was recognized that impregnation type liquid membrane using crown ether can separate amino acid optical isomers. High separation performance was obtained in carbon monoxide/nitrogen separation by using fluid carrier that uses cuprous iodine/1-methyl imidazole. (NEDO)

The paper conducted a R and D on the handling of drilling equipment in drilling/collecting of submarine oil and the gas lift of artificial oil extraction technology. As to each equipment of a barge style handling system, conducted were assembly/adjustment/trial run on land and pipe handling experiments on sea. In the experiment, confirmed were pipe transfer function, lifting function, fitting function, grasping function, etc. In the ocean experiment, studied were pipe bending stress, Karman vortex control effects, etc. Relating to the gas lift system, experiments were made on confirmation of fabrication/performance of air compressor. Moreover, a technique of air transportation to the blowing inlet of the gas lift pipe was established by developing an air blowing system and fabricating a long-distance flexible pipe. Concerning the gas/liquid/solid three-phase separator, a cyclone separator was developed, and improvement in lifting efficiency was confirmed. Helped by these, the problems of the gas lift system were almost solved, and a possibility of the commercial-base production system was obtained. 2 refs., 182 figs., 47 tabs.

  18. Impediments to predicting site response: Seismic property estimation and modeling simplifications

We compare estimates of the empirical transfer function (ETF) to the plane SH-wave theoretical transfer function (TTF) within a laterally constant medium for invasive and noninvasive estimates of the seismic shear-wave slownesses at 13 Kiban-Kyoshin network stations throughout Japan. The difference between the ETF and either of the TTFs is substantially larger than the difference between the two TTFs computed from different estimates of the seismic properties. We show that the plane SH-wave TTF through a laterally homogeneous medium at vertical incidence inadequately models observed amplifications at most sites for both slowness estimates, obtained via downhole measurements and the spectral analysis of surface waves. Strategies to improve the predictions can be separated into two broad categories: improving the measurement of soil properties and improving the theory that maps the 1D soil profile onto spectral amplification. Using an example site where the 1D plane SH-wave formulation poorly predicts the ETF, we find a more satisfactory fit to the ETF by modeling the full wavefield and incorporating spatially correlated variability of the seismic properties. We conclude that our ability to model the observed site response transfer function is limited largely by the assumptions of the theoretical formulation rather than the uncertainty of the soil property estimates.

  19. Performance test of an automated moment tensor determination system for the future "Tokai" earthquake

    2000-06-01

We have investigated how the automated moment tensor determination (AMTD) system using the FREESIA/KIBAN broadband network is likely to behave during a future large earthquake. Because we do not have enough experience with a large (M >8) nearby earthquake, we computed synthetic waveforms for such an event by assuming the geometrical configuration of the anticipated Tokai earthquake and several fault rupture scenarios. Using this synthetic data set, we examined the behavior of the AMTD system to learn how to prepare for such an event. For our synthetic Tokai event data we assume its focal mechanism, fault dimension, and scalar seismic moment. We also assume a circular rupture propagation with constant rupture velocity and dislocation rise time. Both uniform and heterogeneous slip models are tested. The results show that performance depends on both the hypocentral location (i.e. unilateral vs. bilateral) and the degree of heterogeneity of slip. In the tests that we have performed the rupture directivity appears to be more important than slip heterogeneity. We find that for such large earthquakes it is necessary to use stations at distances greater than 600 km and frequencies between 0.005 to 0.02 Hz to maintain a point-source assumption and to recover the full scalar seismic moment and radiation pattern. In order to confirm the result of the synthetic test, we have analyzed the 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-oki (MJ7.8) and the 1995 Kobe (MJ7.2) earthquakes by using observed broadband waveforms. For the Kobe earthquake we successfully recovered the moment tensor by using the routinely used frequency band (0.01-0.05 Hz displacements). However, we failed to estimate a correct solution for the Hokkaido Nansei-oki earthquake by using the same routine frequency band. In this case, we had to use the frequencies between 0.005 to 0.02 Hz to recover the moment tensor, confirming the validity of the synthetic test result for the Tokai earthquake.

  20. Seismic attenuation structure associated with episodic tremors and slip zones, southwestern Japan, in the Nankai subduction zone

We imaged the seismic attenuation structure (frequency- independent Qp) beneath southwestern Japan using t* estimated by the S coda wave spectral ratio method to the waveform data from the Kiban nationwide seismic network. The seismic attenuation (Qp-1) structure was clearly imaged for the region beneath Shikoku, the Kii peninsula, and eastern Kyushu at depths down to 50 km. At depths of 5 to 35 km, the seismic attenuation structure changes at the Median Tectonic Line and other geological boundaries beneath Shikoku and the southwestern Kii peninsula. High-Qp zones within the lower crust of the overlying plate were found just above the slip regions at the centers and deeper parts of the long-term slow-slip events (SSEs) beneath the Bungo and Kii channels and central Shikoku. Beneath central Shikoku, within the overlying plate, a high-Qp zone bounded by low-Qp zones was located from the top of the overlying plate to the plate interface of the subducting plate. The high-Qp zone and low-Qp zones correspond to high-Vp and low-Vp zones of previous study by Matsubara et al. [2009], respectively. The boundaries of the high-Qp zone and the low-Qp zones were located at the segment boundaries of tremors. The heterogeneity of the seismic attenuation and velocity structures also appeared to correspond to the characteristics of geography (uplifting map by Ohmori [1990]) beneath Shikoku. The results indicated that the locations of the long- and short-term SSEs could be limited by the inhomogeneous distribution of the materials and/or condition of the overlying plate, which is considered to be formed due to geological and geographical process. The heterogeneity of materials and/or condition within the forearc crust possibly made an effect on inhomogeneous rheological strength distribution on the interface.

  1. Three-dimensional site response at KiK-net downhole arrays

Ground motions at two Kiban-Kyoshin Network (KiK-net) strong motion downhole array sites in Hokkaido, Japan (TKCH08 in Taiki and TKCH05 in Honbetsu) illustrate the importance of three-dimensional (3D) site effects. These sites recorded the M8.0 2003 Tokachi-Oki earthquake, with recorded accelerations above 0.4 g at both sites as well as numerous ground motions from smaller events. Weak ground motions indicate that site TKCH08 is well modeled with the assumption of plane SH waves traveling through a 1D medium (SH1D), while TKCH05 is characteristic of a poor fit to the SH1D theoretical response. We hypothesized that the misfit at TKCH05results from the heterogeneity of the subsurface. To test this hypothesis, we measured four S-wave velocity profiles in the vicinity (spatial heterogeneity because the 3D effects are negligible. The Tokachi-Oki time history at TKCH05 includes both nonlinear and 3D site effects. Comparisons of the accuracy of the SH1D model predictions of these surface time histories from the downhole time histories indicates that the 3D site effects are at least as important as nonlinear effects in this case. The errors associated with the assumption of a 1D medium and 1D wave propagation will be carried into a nonlinear analysis that relies on these same assumptions. Thus, the presence of 3D effects should be ruled out prior to a 1D nonlinear analysis. The SH1D residuals show that 3D effects can be mistaken for nonlinear effects.

Assembly of International Space Station (ISS) is expected to be complete in 2010, with operations planned to continue through at least 2016. As we move nearer to assembly complete, replanning activities by NASA and ISS International Partners have been completed and the final complement of research facilities on ISS is becoming more certain. This paper will review pans for facilities in the US On-orbit Segment of ISS, including contributions from International Partners, to provide a vision of the research capabilities that will be available starting in 2010. At present, in addition to research capabilities in the Russian segment, the United States Destiny research module houses nine research facilities or racks. These facilities include five multi-purpose EXPRESS racks, two Human Research Facility (HRF) racks, the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG), and the Minus Eighty-degree Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI), enabling a wide range of exploration-related applied as well as basic research. In the coming years, additional racks will be launched to augment this robust capability: Combustion Integrated Rack (CIR), Fluids Integrated Rack (FIR), Window Observation Rack Facility (WORF), Microgravity Science Research Rack (MSRR), Muscle Atrophy Research Exercise System (MARES), additional EXPRESS racks and possibly a second MELFI. In addition, EXPRESS Logistics Carriers (ELC) will provide attach points for external payloads. The European Space Agency s Columbus module will contain five research racks and provide four external attach sites. The research racks are Biolab, European Physiology Module (EPM), Fluid Science Lab (FSL), European Drawer System (EDS) and European Transport Carrier (ETC). The Japanese Kibo elements will initially support three research racks, Ryutai for fluid science, Saibo for cell science, and Kobairo for materials research, as well as 10 attachment sites for external payloads. As we look ahead to assembly complete, these new facilities represent

Two groups of commercial quality (“acceptable”) pearls produced using two donors, and a group of “acceptable” pearls from other donors were analyzed using reflectance UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Three pearls with different colors produced by the same donor showed different absorption spectra. Cream and gold colored pearls showed a wide absorption from 320 to about 460 nm, while there was just slight reflectance around 400 nm by the white pearl with a pink overtone. Cream and gold pearls reached a reflectance peak at 560 to 590 nm, while the white pearl with pink overtone showed slightly wider absorption in this region. Both cream and gold pearls showed an absorption peak after the reflectance peak, at about 700 nm for the cream pearl and 750 nm for the gold pearl. Two other pearls produced by the same donor (white with cream overtone and cream with various overtones) showed similar spectra, which differed in their intensity. One of these pearls had very high lustre and its spectrum showed a much higher percentage reflectance than the second pearl with inferior lustre. This result may indicate that reflectance is a useful quantitative indicator of pearl lustre. The spectra of two white pearls resulting from different donors with the same color nacre (silver) showed a reflectance at 260 nm, followed by absorption at 280 nm and another reflectance peak at 340 nm. After this peak the spectra for these pearls remained flat until a slight absorption peak around 700 nm. Throughout the visible region, all white pearls used in this study showed similar reflectance spectra although there were differences in reflectance intensity. Unlike the spectral results from white pearls, the results from yellow and gold pearls varied according to color saturation of the pearl. The results of this study show that similarities between absorption and reflectance spectra of cultured pearls resulting from the same saibo donor are negligible and could not be detected with UV
