Klemens Szaniawski formuló dos principios probabilísticos de igualdad: la igualdad de oportunidades para la satisfacción y la igualdad de oportunidades para la elección. Demostró que incluso en una situación muy simplificada pueden existir diferentes concepciones de la igualdad, que pueden entrar en conflicto entre sí y con otros requisitos para los métodos de toma de decisiones sociales. Esta forma de comprobación y comparación de los principios de la justicia distributiva es actualmente dominante en la teoría de la elección pública.

    Let us start with a story of the conservatory in Prague where a Czech student Jan Snitil met a Japanese girl Masako Nakajima. Their marriage helped to initiate a cultural exchange between their countries of birth. Later Jan Snitil as the conductor of the Opera house in Opava with the help of a NPO group under his wife had a considerable success in introducing the Czech opera Dalibor (from Bedrich Smetana; stage director Josef Novak) in Japan and by realizing the first performance of the Japanese opera "Juzuru" (stage director T. Ohska) in Opava. This brought together both respective stage directors. The intensifying interest of T. Ohska for the operas of Smetana inspired J. Novak to arrange in Prague his meeting with Vaclav Nemec well known for his promotion work of the great Czech composer. In his professional career Vaclav Nemec is the internationally known Earth scientist specialized since early 1960's in the field of mathematical geology (later also in tectonics) and since 1991 respected as the "Father of Geoethics". At the meeting Nemec recognized Ohska as a Physics Professor specialized in nuclear physic and attracted him for an active participation in the field of geoethics. Prof. Ohska prepared valuable presentations for the international session on geoethics at Pribram (2011) and especially for the International Geological Congress in Brisbane (2012). At Pribram in the course of a social party Lidmila Nemcova (co-convenor of the meeting) introduced Prof. Ohska to Waclaw Demecki, Chancellor of the Higher School of Management in Legnica (Poland). Demecki has been inviting Ohska for special lectures on science as well as on cultural heritage of Japan. Professor Ohska arranges his visits to Poland through Prague where he can meet with Novak and Nemec to discuss the staging of the last opera of Smetana "Devil's Wall".     Local modes caused by defects play a significant role in the thermal transport properties of thermoelectrics. Of particular interest are charge-neutral defects that suppress thermal conductivity, without significantly reducing electrical transport. Here, we report a temperature dependent Raman study that identifies such a mode in a standard thermoelectric material, Bi{sub 2}Te{sub 2}Se. One of the modes observed, whose origin has been debated for decades, was shown most likely to be an antisite defect induced local mode. The anomalous temperature independent broadening of the local mode is ascribed to the random arrangement of Se atoms. The temperature renormalization of all modes is well explained by an anharmonic model–Klemens's model.

  11. First-principles study of lattice thermal conductivity of Td-WTe2

    The structural and thermal properties of bulk Td-WTe2 have been studied by using first-principles calculations based on the simple Klemens model and an iterative self-consistent method. Both methods show that lattice thermal conductivity is anisotropic, with the highest value in the (001) plane, and lowest one along the c-axis at 300 K. The calculated average thermal conductivity of WTe2 is in agreement with the experimental measurement. The size dependent thermal conductivity shows that nanostructuring of WTe2 can possibly further decrease the lattice thermal conductivity, which can improve the thermoelectric efficiency. Such extremely low thermal conductivity, even much lower than WSe2, makes WTe2 having many potential applications in thermal insulation and thermoelectric materials.

    Modern poloidal divertor tokamaks, such as ASDEX upgrade (AUG), produce elongated plasmas, which are unstable against vertical displacement. The growth rate of this 2D instability in the presence of stabilizing passive conductors (PSL) with finite resistivity was calculated for 5416 AUG typical equilibria. For this, a general ideal MHD code package (NEMEC, CAS3DN, STARWALL) was used, which is able to take into account also the 3D structure of the PSL. The comparison of the resulting growth rates with the previously used rigid displacement model (movement only in z-direction, no skin effect for PSL considered, no induced surface currents) shows that the latter simplified model gives a consistently lower limit for typical AUG parameters (elongation, triangularity, current profile and axis position in radial direction). A statistical analysis of the results of the rigid displacement model shows the expected dependencies except for the triangularity, which has a stabilizing effect in this model. Based on results of our present, more general model, we conclude that a rigid displacement model gives an over-optimistic result regarding the effect of triangularity, in line with the experimental observation on AUG of an increasing discrepancy between previously predicted and observed growth rates for strongly triangular plasmas.

  13. CASTOR3D: linear stability studies for 2D and 3D tokamak equilibria

    The CASTOR3D code, which is currently under development, is able to perform linear stability studies for 2D and 3D, ideal and resistive tokamak equilibria in the presence of ideal and resistive wall structures and coils. For these computations ideal equilibria represented by concentric nested flux surfaces serve as input (e.g. computed with the NEMEC code). Solving an extended eigenvalue problem, the CASTOR3D code takes simultaneously plasma inertia and wall resistivity into account. The code is a hybrid of the CASTOR_3DW stability code and the STARWALL code. The former is an extended version of the CASTOR and CASTOR_FLOW code, respectively. The latter is a linear 3D code computing the growth rates of resistive wall modes in the presence of multiply-connected wall structures. The CASTOR_3DW code, and some parts of the STARWALL code have been reformulated in a general 3D flux coordinate representation that allows to choose between various types of flux coordinates. Furthermore, the implemented many-valued current potentials in the STARWALL part allow a correct treatment of the m  =  0, n  =  0 perturbation. In this paper, we outline the theoretical concept, and present some numerical results which illustrate the present status of the code and demonstrate its numerous application possibilities.

  14. Metal-Rich SX Phe stars in the Kepler Field

    A spectroscopic and photometric analysis has been carried out for thirty-two candidate SX_Phe variable blue straggler stars in the Kepler-field (Balona & Nemec 2012). Radial velocities (RVs), space motions (U,V,W), projected rotation velocities (v sin i), spectral types, and atmospheric characteristics (T_eff, log g, [Fe/H], xi_t, zeta_RT, etc.) are presented for 30 of the 32 stars. Although several stars are metal-weak with extreme halo orbits, the mean [Fe/H] of the sample is near solar, thus the stars are more metal-rich than expected for a typical sample of Pop.II stars, and more like halo metal-rich A-type stars (Perry 1969). Two thirds of the stars are fast rotators with v sin i > 50 km/s, including four stars with v sin i > 200 km/s. Three of the stars have (negative) RVs > 250 km/s, five have retrograde space motions, and 21 have total speeds (relative to the LSR) > 400 km/s.   15. Metal Abundances, Radial Velocities and other Physical Characteristics for the RR Lyrae Stars in the Kepler Field

    Spectroscopic iron-to-hydrogen ratios, radial velocities, atmospheric parameters, and new photometric analyses are presented for 41 RR Lyrae stars (and one probable high-amplitude delta Scuti star) located in the field-of-view of the Kepler space telescope. Thirty-seven of the RR Lyrae stars are fundamental-mode pulsators (i.e., RRab stars) of which 16 exhibit the Blazhko effect. Four of the stars are multiperiodic RRc pulsators oscillating primarily in the first-overtone mode. Spectroscopic [Fe/H] values for the 34 stars for which we were able to derive estimates range from -2.54 +/- 0.13 (NR Lyr) to -0.05 +/- 0.13 dex (V784 Cyg), and for the 19 Kepler-field non-Blazhko stars studied by Nemec et al.(2011) the abundances agree will with their photometric [Fe/H] values.   16. OGLE-ing the Magellanic System: Photometric Metallicity from Fundamental Mode RR Lyrae Stars

    In an era of extensive photometric observations, the catalogs of RR Lyrae type variable stars number tens of thousands of objects. The relation between the iron abundance [Fe/H] and the Fourier parameters of the stars light curve allows us to investigate mean metallicities and metallicity gradients in various stellar environments, independently of time-consuming spectroscopic observations. In this paper we use almost 15000 V- and I-band light curves of fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars from the OGLE-IV survey to provide a precise relation between the V- and I-band phase parameter phi_31 used to estimate [Fe/H]. We apply this relation to metallicity formulae developed for the Johnson V- and the Kepler Kp-band to obtain the relation between [Fe/H] and phi_31 for the I-band photometry. Last, we apply the new relation of Nemec et al. (2013) to the OGLE-IV fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars data and construct a metallicity map of the Magellanic Clouds.   17. The distance to IC4499 from K-band photometry of 32 RR Lyrae stars

    Single epoch K-band photometry of 32 RR Lyrae stars in the young galactic globular cluster IC4499 is presented. The mean magnitudes have been estimated using the K-band template light-curves of Jones, Carney and Fulbright (1996). We derive an independent estimate of the distance and reddening for the cluster based on the new -logP-[Fe/H] relation from Bono et al.(2003) which has a zero-point in agreement with the canonical LMC distance of (m-M)0 = 18.5. For an assumed metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.65+-0.1 we find (m-M)0 = 16.47+-0.04+-0.06 (random and systematic errors respectively) and E(B-V)=0.24+-0.03 in good agreement with the findings of Walker and Nemec (1996) based on optical data. The distance estimate is very robust to uncertainties in the reddening estimate but naturally depends directly on the adopted zero-point of the -logP-[Fe/H] relation.

    In addition to its exotic electronic properties graphene exhibits unusually high intrinsic thermal conductivity. The physics of phonons--the main heat carriers in graphene--has been shown to be substantially different in two-dimensional (2D) crystals, such as graphene, from in three-dimensional (3D) graphite. Here, we report our experimental study of the isotope effects on the thermal properties of graphene. Isotopically modified graphene containing various percentages of 13C were synthesized by chemical vapour deposition (CVD). The regions of different isotopic compositions were parts of the same graphene sheet to ensure uniformity in material parameters. The thermal conductivity, K, of isotopically pure 12C (0.01% 13C) graphene determined by the optothermal Raman technique, was higher than 4,000 W mK(-1) at the measured temperature T(m)~320 K, and more than a factor of two higher than the value of K in graphene sheets composed of a 50:50 mixture of 12C and 13C. The experimental data agree well with our molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, corrected for the long-wavelength phonon contributions by means of the Klemens model. The experimental results are expected to stimulate further studies aimed at a better understanding of thermal phenomena in 2D crystals.

    Full Text Available The article proposes to apply the term "bilingual epigraph", considering "author-epigraph-narrative-reader" relationship in the poetics of the novel, preceded by numerous epigraphs from more than 80 languages over the world. Bilingual epigraphs are unique because they are able to develop new and nonlinear subtext associations. The intellectual reader that can value bilingual epigraph gets involved into manyleveled relations not only of the events portrayed, he also enters new cultural reality, where the bilingual epigraph becomes a key, an allusion. Epigraph together with a reader start to create new levels of reading, they both develop extra locuses within the artistic space of the work. Thus, bilingual epigraphs containing foreign-language elements, perform the function of reference (a footnote developing hypertextual relationship. This article investigates the novel "The Gilded Age, a tale of today" (1873 by Mark Twain (S. Klemens and Ch.D.Worren as one of the first works in which multiple bilingual epigrafs developed Hypertextual relations, in the modern sense of hypertext as a nonlinear narrative.

    The thermoelectric performance of materials relies substantially on the band structures that determine the electronic and phononic transports, while the transport behaviors compete and counter-act for the power factor PF and figure-of-merit ZT. These issues make a full-scale computation of the whole set of thermoelectric parameters particularly attractive, while a calculation scheme of the electronic and phononic contributions to thermal conductivity remains yet challenging. In this work, we present a full-scale computation scheme based on the first-principles calculations by choosing a set of doped half-Heusler compounds as examples for illustration. The electronic structure is computed using the WIEN2k code and the carrier relaxation times for electrons and holes are calculated using the Bardeen and Shockley's deformation potential (DP) theory. The finite-temperature electronic transport is evaluated within the framework of Boltzmann transport theory. In sequence, the density functional perturbation combined with the quasi-harmonic approximation and the Klemens' equation is implemented for calculating the lattice thermal conductivity of carrier-doped thermoelectric materials such as Ti-doped NbFeSb compounds without losing a generality. The calculated results show good agreement with experimental data. The present methodology represents an effective and powerful approach to calculate the whole set of thermoelectric properties for thermoelectric materials.

  1. Raman studies of nearly half-metallic ferromagnetic CoS2.

    We measured the Raman spectra of ferromagnetic, nearly half-metallic, CoS2 over a broad temperature range. All five Raman active modes Ag, Eg, Tg(1), Tg(2) and Tg(3) were observed. The magnetic ordering is indicated by a change of the temperature dependences of the frequency and the line width of Ag and Tg(2) modes at the Curie point. The temperature dependence of the frequencies and line widths of the Ag, Eg, Tg(1), Tg(2) modes in the paramagnetic phase can be described in the framework of the Klemens approach. Hardening of the Tg(2), Tg(1) and Ag modes on cooling can be unambiguously seen in the ferromagnetic phase. The line widths of Tg(2) and Ag modes behave in a natural way at low exciting laser powers (they decrease with decreasing temperature) in the ferromagnetic phase. At high exciting laser powers the corresponding line widths increase as temperature decreases below the Curie temperature. Then, as will be shown, the line width of the Ag mode reaches a maximum at about 80 K. Tentative explanations of some of the observed effects are given, taking into account the nearly half-metallic nature of CoS2.

  2. Magnetoresistance in antiferromagnet-based spin tunnel junctions

    To date spintronics research and applications of magnetically ordered systems have focused on ferromagnets (FMs). There are, however, fundamental physical limitations for FM materials which may make them impractical to realize the full potential of spintronics. Metal FMs offer high temperature operation but the large magnetic stray fields make them unfavorable for high-density integration and metals are unsuitable for transistor and information processing applications. FM semiconductors on the other hand do not allow for high-temperature operation. We present a concept in which these limitations are circumvented in spintronics based on antiferromagnets. The concept is based on relativistic magnetic and magneto-transport anisotropy effects in nanodevices whose common characteristics is that they are an even function of the microscopic magnetic moment vector, i.e., can be equally strong in AFMs as in FMs. As a demonstration we present our experimental observation of >100% tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in a device with an IrMn AFM tunnel electrode [1]. We apply this relation to metallicity formulae developed for the Johnson V- and the Kepler Kp-band to obtain the relation between [Fe/H] and ϕ31 for the I-band photometry. Last, we apply the new relation of Nemec to the OGLE-IV fundamental mode RR Lyr stars data and construct a metallicity map of the Magellanic Clouds. Median [Fe/H] is -1.39±0.44 dex for the LMC and -1.77±0.48 dex for the SMC, on the Jurcsik metallicity scale. We also find a metallicity gradient within the LMC with a slope of -0.029±0.002 dex/kpc in the inner 5 kpc and -0.030±0.003 dex/kpc beyond 8 kpc, and no gradient in-between (-0.019±0.002 dex/kpc integrally). We do not observe a metallicity gradient in the SMC, although we show that the metal-rich RRab stars are more concentrated toward the SMC center than the metal-poor.

    Spectroscopic iron-to-hydrogen ratios, radial velocities, atmospheric parameters, and new photometric analyses are presented for 41 RR Lyrae stars (and one probable high-amplitude {delta} Sct star) located in the field-of-view of the Kepler space telescope. Thirty-seven of the RR Lyrae stars are fundamental-mode pulsators (i.e., RRab stars) of which sixteen exhibit the Blazhko effect. Four of the stars are multiperiodic RRc pulsators oscillating primarily in the first-overtone mode. Spectroscopic [Fe/H] values for the 34 stars for which we were able to derive estimates range from -2.54 {+-} 0.13 (NR Lyr) to -0.05 {+-} 0.13 dex (V784 Cyg), and for the 19 Kepler-field non-Blazhko stars studied by Nemec et al. the abundances agree will with their photometric [Fe/H] values. Four non-Blazhko RR Lyrae stars that they identified as metal-rich (KIC 6100702, V2470 Cyg, V782 Cyg and V784 Cyg) are confirmed as such, and four additional stars (V839 Cyg, KIC 5520878, KIC 8832417, KIC 3868420) are also shown here to be metal-rich. Five of the non-Blazhko RRab stars are found to be more metal-rich than [Fe/H] {approx}-0.9 dex while all of the 16 Blazhko stars are more metal-poor than this value. New P-{phi}{sub 31}{sup s}-[Fe/H] relationships are derived based on {approx}970 days of quasi-continuous high-precision Q0-Q11 long- and short-cadence Kepler photometry. With the exception of some Blazhko stars, the spectroscopic and photometric [Fe/H] values are in good agreement. Several stars with unique photometric characteristics are identified, including a Blazhko variable with the smallest known amplitude and frequency modulations (V838 Cyg)

    Highlights: • Mullite-type PbFeBO{sub 4} shows uni-axial negative coefficient of thermal expansion. • Anisotropic thermal expansion of the metric parameters was modeled using modified Grüneisen approximation. • The model includes harmonic, quasi-harmonic and intrinsic anharmonic contributions to the internal energy. • DFT calculation, temperature- and pressure-dependent Raman spectra help understand the phonon decay and associated anharmonicity. - Abstract: The lattice thermal expansion of mullite-type PbFeBO{sub 4} is presented in this study. The thermal expansion coefficients of the metric parameters were obtained from composite data collected from temperature-dependent neutron and X-ray powder diffraction between 10 K and 700 K. The volume thermal expansion was modeled using extended Grüneisen first-order approximation to the zero-pressure equation of state. The additive frame of the model includes harmonic, quasi-harmonic and intrinsic anharmonic potentials to describe the change of the internal energy as a function of temperature. The unit-cell volume at zero-pressure and 0 K was optimized during the DFT simulations. Harmonic frequencies of the optical Raman modes at the Γ-point of the Brillouin zone at 0 K were also calculated by DFT, which help to assign and crosscheck the experimental frequencies. The low-temperature Raman spectra showed significant anomaly in the antiferromagnetic regions, leading to softening or hardening of some phonons. Selected modes were analyzed using a modified Klemens model. The shift of the frequencies and the broadening of the line-widths helped to understand the anharmonic vibrational behaviors of the PbO{sub 4}, FeO{sub 6} and BO{sub 3} polyhedra as a function of temperature.

    Polycrystalline Bi{sub 2}Al{sub 4}O{sub 9} powder samples were synthesized using the glycerine method. Single crystals were produced from the powder product in a Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3} melt. The lattice thermal expansion of the mullite-type compound was studied using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT). The metric parameters were modeled using Grüneisen approximation for the zero pressure equation of state, where the temperature-dependent vibrational internal energy was calculated from the Debye characteristic frequency. Both the first-order and second-order Grüneisen approximations were applied for modeling the volumetric expansion, and the second-order approach provided physically meaningful axial parameters. The phonon density of states as well as phonon dispersion guided to set the characteristic frequency for simulation. The experimental infrared and Raman phonon bands were compared with those calculate from the DFT calculations. Selective Raman modes were analyzed for the thermal anharmonic behaviors using simplified Klemens model.   7. Thermal conductivity of zirconia based inert matrix fuel: use and abuse of the formal models for testing new experimental data

    An inert matrix fuel material based on yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia: Er xY yPu zZr 1- x- y- zO 2-( x + y)/2 ( x+ y=0.15, z: [0.05-0.15]) was proposed for burning excess plutonium in light water reactors. The studied inert matrix fuel is made of cubic stabilized zirconia. The limited number of experimental thermal conductivity data justifies this formal and intensive study. Approaches derived from Klemens theory were revisited and the derived conductivity model applied for zirconia, accounting the effects of phononic scattering centers. The hyperbolic thermal conductivity trend with temperature known for pure zirconia, is reduced by isotopes, impurities, dopants and oxygen vacancies, which act as scattering centers and contribute to conductivity reduction to a flat plot with temperature for stabilized zirconia. It is experimentally observed that the thermal conductivity derived from laser flash measurements for Er xY yM zZr 1- x- y- zO 2-( x + y)/2 (with M=Ce or Pu, z=0 or ˜0.1 and x+ y=0.15) is rather constant as a function of temperature in the range 300-1000 K. The thermal conductivity was observed to depend on the concentration of dopants such as YO 1.5 and/or ErO 1.5, CeO 2 (analogous of PuO 2) or PuO 2. The bulk material conductivity of Er 0.05Y 0.10Pu 0.10Zr 0.75O 1.925 is about 2 W m -1 K -1. In this study, the thermal conductivity data of both monoclinic and stabilized cubic zirconia based IMF are tested with the model approach in order to understand the experimental data in a semi-quantitative way.

  8. Metal Hydrides as hot carrier cell absorber materials

    The hot Carrier Solar Cell (HCSC) allows the photon-induced hot carriers (the carriers with energy larger than the band gap) to be collected before they completely thermalise. The absorber of the HCSC should have a large phononic band gap to supress Klemens Decay, which results in a slow carrier cooling speed. In fact, a large phononic band gap likely exists in a binary compound whose constituent elements have a large mass ratio between each other. Binary hydrides with their overwhelming mass ratio of the constituent elements are important absorber candidates. Study on different types of binary hydrides as potential absorber candidates is presented in this paper. Many binary transition metal hydrides have reported theoretical or experimental phonon dispersion charts which show large phononic band gaps. Among these hydrides, the titanium hydride (TiHX) is outstanding because of its low cost, easy fabrication process and is relatively inert to air and water. A TiHX thin film is fabricated by directly hydrogenating an evaporated titanium thin film. Characterisation shows good crystal quality and the hydrogenation process is believed to be successful. Ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy is used to study the electron cooling time of TiHX. The result is very noisy due to the low absorption and transmission of the sample. The evolution of the TA curves has been explained by band to band transition using the calculated band structure of TiH2. Though not reliable due to the high noise, decay time fitting at 700nm and 600nm shows a considerably slow carrier cooling speed of the sample.

  9. Metal-Rich SX Phe Stars in the Kepler Field

    Full Text Available High-resolution spectroscopic observations have been made for 32 of the 34 candidate SX Phe stars identified in the Kepler field by Balona & Nemec (2012. All available long-and short-cadence Q0-Q17 Kepler photometry has been analyzed for the 34 candidates. Radial velocities (RVs, space motions (U, V, W, projected rotation velocities (υ sin i, spectral types, and atmospheric characteristics (Teff, log g, [M/H], υmic, etc. were derived from ~ 160 spectra taken with the ESPaDOnS spectrograph on the Canada-France-Hawaii 3.6-m telescope and with the ARCES spectrograph on the Apache Point Observatory 3.5-m telescope. Two thirds of the stars are fast rotators with υ sin i > 50 km/s, including four stars with υ sin i > 200 km/s. Three of the stars have (negative RVs > 250 km/s and retrograde space motions, and seven stars have total space motions > 400 km/s. All the spectroscopically measured SX Phe candidates have positions in a Toomre diagram that are consistent with being bona fide halo and thick-disk stars. Although several stars show a marked metal weakness, the mean [Fe/H] of the sample is near 0.0 dex (σ ~ 0.25 dex, which is considerably more metal-rich than is normally expected for a sample of Pop. II stars. Observed pulsation frequency modulations and optical time delays suggest that at least eight of the SX Phe stars are in binary systems, some of which show significant RV variations. Six of the time-delay binaries have secondary masses ranging from 0.05 to 0.70 M☉ and orbital periods in the range 9 to 1570 days. Another star appears to be an ellipsoidal variable with a 2.3-day orbital period; and two other systems have orbital periods longer than the ~ 4-year sampling interval of the Kepler data.

  10. Transcarpathia - Ukrainian border region at the edge of the EU. Internal and external representations

    Starting from 1918, multiethnic Transcarpathia changed after centuries of being an integrated part of Hungary frequently its political affiliation and is since 2004 a Ukrainian border region to the European Union. Three of the four European Union neighbour countries belong since 21.12.2007 to the Schengen zone (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary), only the southern neighbour Romania is for the time being not yet a Schengen country. After a phase of relatively open borders and relatively intensive neighbourhood relations in the first transformation years, by the Schengen regime the situation for Transcarpathia changed again. The current situation, possibly still to be intensified by the Schengen entry of Romania, is likely to persist for some time. What does this mean for Transcarpathia as well as for the wider region in the northeast of the Pannonian basin? Which factors are determining the development in Transcarpathia? Which position maintains Transcarpathia within the Ukraine, how does it look at Kiev and how is it looked at by Kiev and the cis-Carpathian areas of the Ukraine? The paper deals under these aspects with economic development in Transcarpathia, the interest of foreign investors in the region, its role in the continental transportation network, the identity of the Slavonic population majority and regionalism, also with the position of the large Hungarian minority in the region and its relation to the motherland. The paper is based on a larger research project completed and published already in 2004 (Peter Jordan, Mladen Klemenčić: Transcarpathia - Bridgehead or Periphery?), but adopts also the results of a later diploma work of a student of the author (Berenike Ecker) as well as results of more recent research by the author himself. It is found that shaping by Hungarian history, borderland location and multiethnic structure can be defined as the essential components of Transcarpathian identity.   14. Hierarchical modeling of heat transfer in silicon-based electronic devices

    , two new quantum correction alternatives are applied to correct the results obtained with MD. The alternatives consider the quantization of the energy per phonon mode. In addition, the effect of isotope scattering is included in the phonon-phonon relaxation time values previously determined in the first step. It is found that both the quantization of the energy and the inclusion of scattering with isotopes significant reduce the contribution of high-frequency modes to the overall thermal conductivity. After these two effects are considered, the contribution of optical modes reduces to less than 2.4%. In this step, two sets of properties are obtained. The first one results from the application of quantum corrections to abovementioned properties, while the second is obtained including also the isotope scattering. These sets of properties are identified in this work as isotope-enriched silicon (isoSi) and natural silicon (natSi) and are used along other phonon relaxation time models in the last step of our methodology. Before we solve the BTE using the LBM, a new dispersive lattice Boltzmann formulation is proposed. The new dispersive formulation is based on constant lattice spacings (CLS) and flux limiters, rather than constant time steps (as previously reported). It is found that the new formulation significantly reduces the computation cost and complexity of the solution of the BTE, without affecting the thermal predictions. Lastly, in the last step of our methodology, we solve the BTE. The equation is solved under the relaxation time approximation using our thermal properties estimated for isoSi and natSi and using two phonon formulations. The phonon formulations include a gray model and the new dispersive method. For comparison purposes, the BTE is also solved using the phenomenological and theoretical phonon relaxation time models of Holland, and Han and Klemens.
