Radiocarbon dating using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) was performed on numerous wood trunks from pumiceous deposits along the Nagata, Isso and Miyanoura rivers on the northern side of Yakushima Island, 60 km south of Kyushu Island. The obtained 14C dates were around 6.5 ka BP, which, in combination with the geological characteristics of the pumiceous deposits indicates that these specimens were buried during the Kikai-Akahoya (K-Ah) eruption from the Kikai caldera. However, the fact that they are not charred suggests that the origin of these deposits are not pyroclastic flows. Fourteen taxa (Pinus subgen. Diploxylon, Tsuga, Cryptomeria, Chamaecyparis, Myrica, Castanea, Castanopsis, Quercus subgen. Cyclobalanopsis, Trochodendron, Phellodendron, Lagerstroemia, Rhododendron, Myrsine and Symplocos) were identified through anatomical characteristics. This is the first discovery of forest species on the Yakushima Island before the devastating eruption.

  3. Geological Evidences for a Large Tsunami Generated by the 7.3 ka Kikai Caldera Eruption, Southern Japan

The 7.3 ka eruption of Kikai volcano, southern Kyushu, Japan, is one of the largest caldera-forming eruption in the world. Given that a huge caldera was formed in shallow sea area during the eruption, a tsunami must have been generated by a sea-level change associated. Pyroclastic flow and tsunami deposits by the eruption have been studied around the caldera, but they are not enough to evaluate the tsunami size. The goal of this study is to unravel sizes of tsunami and triggering caldera collapse by numerical simulations based on a widely-distributed tsunami deposit associated with the eruption. In this presentation, we will provide an initial data on distribution of the 7.3 ka tsunami deposit contained in sediment cores taken at three coastal lowlands in Wakayama, Tokushima, and Oita prefectures (560 km, 520 km, and 310 km north-east from the caldera, respectively). A volcanic ash from the eruption (Kikai Akahoya tephra: K-Ah) is evident in organic-rich muddy sedimentary sequence in all sediment cores. Up to 6-cm-thick sand layer, characterized by a grading structure and sharp bed boundary with lower mud, is observed immediately beneath the K-Ah tephra in all study sites. These sedimentary characteristics and broad distribution indicate that the sand layer was most likely deposited by a tsunami which can propagate to a wide area, but not by a local storm surge. Furthermore, the stratigraphic relationship implies that the study sites must have been inundated by the tsunami prior to the ash fall. A sand layer is also evident within the K-Ah tephra layer, suggesting that the sand layer was probably formed by a subsequent tsunami wave during the ash fall. These geological evidences for the 7.3 ka tsunami inundation will contribute to a better understanding of the caldera collapse and the resultant tsunami, but also of the tsunami generating system in the eruptive process.

The sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius (Fabricius) is a major insect pest of the sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. We estimated the entire adult male population of C. formicarius at its low-density period on Kikai Island, Kagoshima Pref., Japan. The population of adult males at the high-density period in September was about 5 times larger than that at its low-density period in May, both of which were estimated by Yamamura's method. Using this calculation in combination with an estimate of the maximal population size (4 x 10E6) by Sugimoto et al. in 1994, the total number of male weevils at their low-density period can be assumed to be less than 8 x 10E5

Coral reef terraces are one of the best recorders of biological response to environmental change events (e.g., sea-level changes). Kikai Island provides a rare opportunity to show biological and ecological frameworks (e.g., competition, coexistence, and succession) during a recent geological period. The island is fringed by raised Holocene raised reef terraces, which formed as a result of periodic tectonic uplifts. This study aims to characterize the spatial and temporal changes of corals at this island during the Holocene. The analysis is based on topographical and biological data obtained for the three sites (Shidooke, Kadon, and Nakugama reefs). Three raised reef terraces (Terrace II, III, and IV) grew from 7300 to 4500 years ago (during 2800 years), from 4500 to 2900 years ago (during 1600 years), and from 2900 to 1800 years ago (during 1100 years), respectively. Terrace II and III were uplifted 1-2 m around 4500 years ago and around 2900 years ago. Terrace IV was uplifted 1-2 m around 1800 years ago. The modern reef has been composed of corals for 1800 years. Sixteen coral genera and 53 species were recorded from the reef terraces. Terrace III and IV were dominated by four coral species (A. digitifera, A. robusta, G. retiformis, and F. stelligera), but Terrace II was predominantly composed of A. digitifera and A. robusta. These biological and ecological variations between the terraces represent a growth strategy responding to differences of reef growth time and/or insolation. (author)

Sweet potato weevil which is a harmful insect injuring sweet potatoes was found out at Yoron Island in 1915 for the first time in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan. Here the eradication of sweet potato weevils using cobalt 60 irradiation achieved at Kikai Island is described. The mass-reared male weevils in potatoes are in pasture after sterilized by gamma irradiation. If the sexually sterile male copulates with a wild female, the egg does not incubate. By the repeated sterilization during several generations, the eradication of sweet potato weevils was accomplished. (M.H.)

Methods of simulation of the motion of human bodies and the control of the motion of bobots are sdudied in order to realize robots to perform gymnastics on a horizontal bar. A model of the human body structure is presented by dividing the human body into 8 parts: right and left arms, the head, the trunk, the right and left thighs, and the right and left foot, and a system is constructed by combination of the links of the rigid partswith an assumption on each link for simplification. A method to enhance the swing motion is devised in order to produce a suspension motionaas a basic movement of horizontal bar gymnastics. The basic condition to control the horizontal bar gynnastics and the control system of an articulation angle are considered. Two algorithms are presented in order to enhance the swing motion and to maintain suspension swing: excitation of the swing by a vertical motion of the center of gravity and excitation by the use of natural frequency. Computer simulation of suspension swing is executed and the results are shown in a figure. A prototype robot to perform horizontal bar gymnastics is manufactured and performs suspension swing, starting of swing, kip motion and giant swing. The concept of optimization is not included concretely in the prototype. 22 refs., 8 figs.

High-precision α-spectrometric 230 Th/ 234 U dating was achieved by recent improvements of measurement system and chemical procedures and enabled critical evaluation of age reliability. We review the status and application of α-spectrometric 230 Th/ 234 U dating of Pleistocene and Holocene corals to reconstruct past sea level changes and tectonic movements in Ryukyus, southwestern Japan and the Philippines in the western rim of circum-Pacific island arcs. The highest terrace in Kikai Island was formed during MIS 5c not MIS 5e that previously reported. Coral reef sediments deposited not only during MIS 5e but also during glacial periods, e.g. MIS 6 and 2, have been found in the Ryukyus. Coral reef sediments formed during MIS 2 were found at ca. 120 m below present sea level off Irabu Island located at 25degN. In addition, it was clear that three terraces developed during MIS 5e, 5c and 5a at Pamilacan Island on the Philippines. (author)

A computer network for electric power control system was developed that is applied with the open systems interconnection (OSI), an international standard for communications protocol. In structuring the OSI network, a direct session layer was accessed from the operation functions when high-speed small-capacity information is transmitted. File transfer, access and control having a function of collectively transferring large-capacity data were applied when low-speed large-capacity information is transmitted. A verification test for the realtime computer network (RCN) mounting regulation was conducted according to a verification model using a mini-computer, and a result that can satisfy practical performance was obtained. For application interface, kernel, health check and two-route transmission functions were provided as a connection control function, so were transmission verification function and late arrival abolishing function. In system mounting pattern, dualized communication server (CS) structure was adopted. A hardware structure may include a system to have the CS function contained in a host computer and a separate installation system. 5 figs., 6 tabs.

Harmonized molecular materials (HMM) were researched to create functional materials adaptable to needs such as environmental harmony and high-efficient conversion in post-industrial society and aging society. Superior mechanisms function efficiently in organisms for perception, transmission and processing of information, and transport and conversion of substances. These functions are caused by harmonization between organic molecules, or organic molecule and metal or inorganic substance. HMM is a key substance to realize these functions similar to those of organisms artificially. It is the purpose of this research to develop HMMs, reform production process by innovating separation and conversion technologies, and finally realize molecular chemical plants. This research also develops high-efficient devices to contribute to the information society, and progresses the industry of bio-functional materials such as high-sensitive bio-sensor. The functions, applications and creation technologies of three kinds of HMM such as assembly, mesophase and microporous materials were researched in fiscal 1995. 956 refs., 128 figs., 13 tabs.

The Order Zoantharia has long been taxonomically neglected primarily due to difficulty in examining the internal morphology of sand-encrusted zoanthids. However, recent work using molecular markers has shown an unexpectedly high diversity of previously “hidden” taxa (families and genera) within Zoantharia (=Zoanthidea, Zoanthiniaria). In this study, unidentified sediment-encrusting zoanthid specimens ( n = 8) were collected from living Japanese Red Coral Paracorallium japonicum (Family Coralliidae) during precious coral harvesting by Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and manned submersible (February 2004-January 2006) at depths of 194-250 m at six locations between Ishigaki-jima Island and Kikai-jima Island, southern Japan. DNA sequences (mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA [mt 16S rDNA], cytochrome oxidase subunit I [COI], nuclear internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA [ITS-rDNA]) unambiguously place these specimens in a previously undescribed, new monophyletic lineage within the family Parazoanthidae. Corallizoanthus tsukaharai, gen. n. et sp. n. is the first reported zoanthid species associated with the family Coralliidae and unlike other described gorgonian-associated zoanthids ( Savalia spp .) does not secrete its own hard axis. Morphologically, C. tsukaharai sp. n. is characterized by generally unitary polyps and bright yellow external coloration.

At first, flagellar motors of bacteria are reviewed as a typical example of molecular machines in living cells. A rotational motor is embedded in the cell membrane at the root of the flagellum. The driving power of the rotation is the flow of hydrogen ion from the inside to the outside of the cell. In a normal state of a bacterium, potential difference of about 0.2 V is produced by the ion pump existing in the cell membrane. A molecular motor of sliding motion of muscle attracts the attention on the relation of the input and output of the molecular motor. The mechanism of the smooth motion without fluctuation in the fluctuated environment and the fluctuated input is unknown. Next, the motion of Paramecium is discussed as an example of a system composed of a number of molecular machines. Paramecium moves to a place of a suitable temperature when placed in a water tank with temperature gradient, however, it does not stop the motion at the place of the suitable temperature and increases a probability to change the direction when leaving, that is it takes a method of indirect probabilistic control. 12 refs., 8 figs.

As functional material to satisfy various needs for environmental harmonization and efficient conversion for information-oriented and aging societies, HMM were surveyed. Living bodies effectively carry out transmission/processing of information, and transport/conversion of substances, and these functions are based on harmonization between organic molecules, and between those and metal or inorganic ones. HMM is a key substance to artificially realize these bio-related functions. Its R & D aims at (1) Making a breakthrough in production process based on innovation of material separation/conversion technology, (2) Contribution to an information-oriented society by high-efficiency devices, and (3) Growth of a functional bio-material industry. HMM is classified into three categories: (1) Assembly materials such as organic ultra-thin films (LB film, self-organizing film), and organic/inorganic hybrid materials for optoelectronics, sensors and devices, (2) Mesophase materials such as functional separation membrane and photo-conductive material, and (3) Microporous materials such as synthetic catalyst using guest/host materials. 571 refs., 88 figs., 21 tabs.

This paper introduces mechatronization of rotating machines in a plant, with application examples of electronic governors as the main subject. For centrifugal compressors, design and fabrication of anti surging control system have become possible by using a programmable logic controller (PLC) and a distributed control system (DCS) with fine scanning time. An electronic governor for turbine control has been added with a function to control amount of power generated by a motive force recovery device in a flowing catalytic cracking equipment by means of an expander inlet valve. This has made possible to operate the motive force recovery device automatically even under a low load operation. With an electronic governor to control supply and receipt amount of steam to and from an existing plant, the governor valve opening angles were so controlled that actual steam header pressure matches the setting, whereas the steam has become possible to be utilized without waste under normal operation. Operation of a comprehensive compressor/turbine monitoring system on DCS, operation of centrifugal compressors of two casings by using electromagnetic bearings, and motor speed control with use of an inverter heve also become possible. 8 figs., 2 tabs.

The DSM facilitates systematic analysis of dependencies among design tasks and optimization of the design process. The framework based on a lumped model description of mechanical systems enables concurrent and cooperative work among multidisciplinary designers at an early stage of the design process. In this paper, we also discuss the relationships between these techniques and the product development flow from product definition to detailed design. (author)

The current technologies of hydraulic pumps and motors for construction machinery and vehicles are discussed. A bent axis type axial double piston pump for negative feedback control systems and a cam plate type double piston pump superior in responsibility for load sensing control systems are usually used for hydraulic shovels. A split flow type double piston pump is on the increase for mini-shovels, having an unsolved problem as pressure fluctuation. The use of piston pumps is increasing rapidly for cranes, and a cam plate type axial piston pump is mainly used for large cranes. A traveling motor integrated with a transmission gear is usually used for hydraulic shovels, and a swing motor with valves and a brake in its casing is also used. A bent axis type variable displacement motor combined with a transmission is on the increase for winches, and a reliable preventing system from drop of suspended loading is expected to be developed rapidly. HST for traveling is also diffusing into small construction machinery. 12 figs.

For the realization of a general-purpose machine tool (lathe) to operate free of hydraulic systems, efforts are exerted to develop element technologies, tool rests, tail stocks, and chuck drives usable for the construction of a practical hydraulic system-free machine tool. In fiscal 2000, comprehensive evaluation of experimental machine tools continued, problems to solve for practical application were put together for the fabrication of improved units, and the improved units and an improved control method were integrated into a prototype of practical machine tools. The prototype was exhibited at Japan International Machine Tool Fair (JIMTOF) as a hydraulic system-free NC (numerically controlled) lathe Type LB300, and won a high valuation. The prototype was then tested for basic performance and for possibility of improvement, and problems to be solved before commercialization were isolated. (NEDO)

The software of automotive control systems has become increasingly large and complex. High level languages (primarily C) and the compilers become more important to reduce coding time. Most compilers represent real number in the floating point format specified by IEEE standard 754. Most microprocessors in the automotive industry have no hardware for the operation using the IEEE standard due to the cost requirements, resulting in the slow execution speed and large code size. Alternative formats to increase execution speed and reduce code size are proposed. Experimental results for the alternative formats show the improvement in execution speed and code size. 4 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs.

Effects extended to industrial areas by new energy development were analyzed by using the industrial relation table. Technological development of new energies can mass-produce energy without being restricted by energy resource availability, and retaining manufacturing facilities can exhibit energy reserve function with security. The technologies may be suitable for local energy supply. In the aspects of industrial policies and people's living, demands on diversification and improvement of the people's living may be responded, levels of scientific technologies may be enhanced, and contribution to improving the industrial structure may be expected. The energy industry includes a large number of related industries and has vast related areas. A large number of technology induced effects can be expected in the course of research and development. A market of huge size may be estimated in the future, by which level elevation of the industrial structure would be supported. Early promotion of the new energy development is an urgent assignment for the 1980's. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to promote research and development, proliferation and practical application, for which the physical strength of the present Japan must be utilized to its maximum in making human and fund investments. Expansion and improvement in the industrialization infrastructures are also important, whereas the government's subsidies must be increased, and vitality in the private sector must be incorporated into organized force. This report summarizes the fiscal 1999 basic research result on industrial technology strategy of a machine tool field. Corresponding to construction of an environment-friendly recycling economic society and economic growth as estimated change in social and industrial structure during 2010-2025, major themes are reuse of machine tools, energy saving, environment design, chip treatment and resource recovery. With preparation of information infrastructures in an advanced information society, major issues are 3D-CAD, remote diagnosis, remote control and self-restoration. Because of decline of the birth rate, positive employment of aged persons and women is desirable. New machining technology for new materials, and fusion of various machining technologies are important. For micro-technology, study should be made on the concept and effect of micro-factory (energy saving, space saving, cost reduction, higher accuracy and higher speed). For higher-accuracy machine tool, static, dynamic, thermal and movement characteristics are the key for improving the proper technology. For faster machining. fine basic structural element, faster main spindle and faster feed are important. (NEDO)

Described herein are the FY 1999 results of the research and development of the robot systems in harmony with human beings. The human-assisting robot is 160cm high, 60cm wide and 99kg or less in weight, and can move on a surface with irregularities of {+-} 2cm at a maximum speed of 2km/h by the bipedal motion. It can also climb up stairs with 20cm high steps at a maximum speed of 1.5 seconds per step, and has two arms which can lift an object of 2 to 10kg in weight. It is provided with functions of inputting three-dimensional visual information and of communication with audio. The project has verified the target functions by testing the single, commercial-size robot, and demonstrated its functions as the integrated system by connecting it to the remotely controlled platform. The other items of the project include the tests in which the dynamics simulator is integrated with other modules; development of the computation algorithm for kinematic chain dynamics; development of the basic robot-motion library for the whole body motion of the robot, for which the additional simulation functions are provided, the interfaces are developed, and motion speed is increased; confirmation of the motions (e.g., stamping, walking forward and backward, and turning) by integrating the motion control simulator for an imaginary robot with the commercial-size robot; and studies on limitations of the motion environments and social effects, e.g., laws and regulations. Available technologies were extracted and technical problems were discussed in detail in connection with the above-named technology, and a technology development scenario was prepared. The study covered the subjects of an earthquake resistant disaster prevention system, ready for activation upon earthquake occurrence, with its structure designed to counter severe vibration; a real-time earthquake resistant disaster prevention system capable of ensuring system safety upon receiving earthquake occurrence information and of instantly collecting information on damage incurred; and an early restoration system to operate upon termination of earthquake. With the active utilization in mind of information technology now making a rapid progress, importance was stressed of a system under which earthquake information, disaster prevention networks, and information on the soil and geography would be linked to the database of the equipment involved. For research on the current state of earthquake disaster prevention technology, an on-site survey was conducted of the disaster prevention facilities now under construction in Hyogo Prefecture, and another survey was conducted of Shizuoka Prefecture's long-standing consideration of earthquake disaster prevention measures. Data were collected at the 5th Corporate Disaster Prevention Symposium held in San Jose, U.S. (NEDO)

A method for determining part re-use and recycling strategy in product design is considered for optimal design of total product life cycle based on the concept of Right Quality Products. For this purpose, it is important to be able to estimate part deterioration status under various product usage conditions. For supporting product designers' decision making about the product life cycle in preliminary design phase, the deterioration estimation is not required to be very exact, but to generate every possible deterioration modes qualitatively. Then, based on these deterioration modes, functional behaviour of target products is simulated, and possible product failure modes can be generated. By utilizing the FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) method, the effects of failure modes are evaluated, and the results are fed back to product designers for confirming their design in terms of total product life cycle optimization. A basic methodology is considered, and case study has been done for a mechanical assembly of a one-time use camera. The assembly consists of injection molded parts. Various CAE methods have been used for predicting possible part failures due to initial residual stress, warp, fatigue, creep, and wear. Then kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanical assembly has been done for detecting the effect of part deterioration on mechanism movements. Several critical failure modes have been detected, and the effects of those failures have been checked by the FMEA method. (NEDO)

The paper described a study made during 1995 through 1998 on the application of 3D woven C/C composite materials to machine parts. The materials are large in rigidity, small in specific gravity, excellent in specific rigidity, and suitable for high speed rotation. They are excellent in heat resistance/dynamic reformation and expected as materials which can exceed limits of the existing steel for machine parts. However, to use them as machine parts, a possibility of high precision cutting is required. Therefore, a study was made on metal multi-layer membrane coating to C/C composites. Pitch-system high-elastic carbon fibers were made a 4-directional material by orienting horizontally in 3 directions at 120 degrees per plane and also orienting vertically. Various materials such as W, Mo and WC were coated by the laser assisted plasma hybrid spraying method. High adhesion coats with little pore were obtained. Multi-directionally woven C/C composites used to be poor in surface precision workability, but the problem was able to be solved by coating surfaces with metal layers and metal multi-layer membranes. The application is expanded not only to polygonal mirrors (for laser printing machine) and milling spindles, but largely to machine parts. 11 figs., 1 tab.

The current status was investigated of the above technology, and several matters were found to be important, which are the improvement of earthquake-proof performance, safety assessment, early-stage acquisition of information on earthquake, highly aseismic structures, inexpensive seismic isolation devices, prompt restoration, and the security of energy supply and materials transportation just after earthquake. Technologies that have to be developed before earthquake involve active vibration control, constant surveillance, management and maintenance of disaster preventing devices, preparation and updating of disaster-related databases, etc. Technologies need to be developed for real-time disaster control in case of earthquake, which involve instant-start vibration control devices, information gathering, airborne monitoring robots, rescue robots, etc. Also required are technologies for prompt assistance and recovery after earthquake, such as those for the physical soundness related diagnosis and assessment of structures, facilities, and machinery, and for their restoration, remedy, and reinforcement. What is required is the establishment of a comprehensive technology into which all the necessary element technologies are incorporated. Since coordination is necessary with other official projects being implemented in a unified way for an industrial area, this project will be effectively accomplished when it is also treated as an official project. A survey is conducted about highly automated machines such as industrial robots. The task to be subjected to development as derived from a survey conducted about needs is the construction of a dangerous work robot. It is pointed out that work in coal mines, tall buildings, industrial complexes, or nuclear power plants may encounter large-scale accidents, and the task is how to perform such work in an automated way. The tasks concluded to be subjected to development after a seed survey analysis are categorized into three groups of element technologies, namely, sensors and recognition function, mechanism and materials, and control and data processing. These element technologies are to be ultimately integrated into a robot, for critical work which is a combination of a highly intelligent robot main body and an integrated management system. Since it will happen that humans have to directly operate such a robot under delicate conditions and share the burden of judgement and thinking, it is also necessary to develop technologies to solve problems of man-to-robot engineering. It is proposed that a dangerous work robot research and development program be established before development is started. (NEDO)

Introduction of a number of robots and consumption of a large amount of energy are unavoidable if a complicated process operation is to be carried out by robots in an extensive work site. Great energy conservation is contrived by developing robots applicable to manufacturing in performing a variety of operations in place of human beings and thereby reducing the number of robots to work. This paper explains the fiscal 2000 results. For dual-handed cooperative tasks, a function was examined capable of gripping an object without giving a humanoid robot an instruction of an exact gripping position. A method was designed to prepare a command for the other arm through a command for one arm, with torque impedance control employed for the purpose of avoiding damage due to collision. A study was conducted on a three-dimensional shape detecting model using a visual device of a robot. In grasping problems of balance control of a humanoid robot, the behavior of a robot consisting of multi-links was considered as behavior of inverted pendulum, with possibility checked for the stabilization of the balance. For the purpose of putting the virtual robot platform previously developed to practical use, a three-dimensional operation tool of run-time user interface was developed, with research conducted on the sophistication of robot application. A highly safe and reliable robot is being developed capable of cooperating with human beings and executing complicated operations in a human working/living space. This paper describes the fiscal 2000 results. Development of robot motion library was continued for extended task for providing services to people in care houses for the aged controlling motions of the humanoid robot. A basic design for a personal service system by the humanoid robot was conducted with the aim of nursing assistance and for the objective of developing a portable terminal type tele-operation device. A public and a home cockpit were researched with the purpose of developing user interfaces for telexistence control. A dynamic simulator for humanoid robots was built, with motions of standing-up and walking examined, in order to develop basic theories for the dual-handed tasks aided by the leg-arm cooperative motion. To develop a robot that properly and safely cooperates and coexists with the human beings, it is essential to obtain a dynamically reasonable and natural control law, so that the basic studies were conducted in this direction. With the purpose of developing a motion capture and learning system, a virtual robot platform and an information acquiring interface were developed. Studies were also conducted on modeling technique for achieving realistic material properties from high-precision image synthesis and actual images. (NEDO)

A highly safe and reliable robot is being developed capable of cooperating and coexisting with human beings to carry out complicated operations in a dangerous site such as a plant, power station maintenance, construction, disaster relief, etc. This paper describes the fiscal 2000 results. In the research for navigated walking functions, the capabilities were extracted for walking straight, turning around and going up and down stairs, with a virtual platform simulated and examined. In the development of remote operation for proxy drive, a method was investigated for instructing change in posture and cooperative movement of the arms and legs. In the evaluation of proxy drive operations for industrial vehicles, a type of operating machine was specified for driving in a standing posture applicable to a robot. In the development of information forming technology supporting remote operations, a basic design was made for the simulator technology of compensating information. Server/client remote control technology was investigated, while a plurality of bi-directional interface means were reviewed for the purpose of efficient information exchange between a robot and an operator. A system for assembling a wall panel was evaluated as an outdoor man-machine cooperative operation. Adaptability to complicated environment such as unprepared ground was also studied, as well as the control of movement of a humanoid robot. (NEDO)

Research and development has been performed on a system technology for the human cooperating and coexisting type robot that can perform various types of works substituting human hands. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1999. In developing a high-function hand, development and fabrication were executed on a device to teach four finger holding actions that correspond to the enhancement in action stability and control responsiveness of the four finger hand and to positions and attitudes of objects. In fabricating the robot platforms, single platform tests and remotely controlled platform connection tests were performed, which demonstrated the functions as an integrated system. In developing libraries for topography adaptive three-dimensional basic walking actions, development was carried out on libraries that correspond to menus for direct advance on a flat land, slewing, and walking on staircases and irregular land. It was found that control closer to that for actually usable robot is possible by considering time delay in articulate control when simulation was performed using the testing robot body. In the study and survey of robot proliferation, development plans were presented that take into consideration the social influence, technological factors, and cost need adaptability. (NEDO)

It is intended to develop a human cooperating and coexisting robot system that can move around freely during operation and shutdown of a oil refining plant to perform different works. This paper describes the achievements in fiscal 2000. With regard to the navigation and maintenance work functions, design was made on the robot induction system and its conception to perform the works after the robot has reached a place of the work. The specifications required for the robot supporting agent were made clear, and the constituting modules were designed to exchange information with the robot. Specifications were compiled for a portable remote operation device intended of operating different vehicles. Investigations were carried out on such protection technologies as interference check and shock absorbing materials to protect the robot platform. A method was developed to acquire posture and motion patterns of a human demonstrator, using only the upper half of the body, from the images captured by a head-mounted camera. Discussions were given on the specifications, systems and image processing algorithms required for vision-navigated autonomous walking, whose practicability was verified. Autonomous walking by means of map-based guidance, and hand operating technologies were also discussed. (NEDO)

A large quantity of coolant is used in the grinding process for ensuring high accuracy and quality in the work. This presents a serious problem from the viewpoint of environmental impact or energy conservation, and now environment-conscious grinding methods requiring no or less coolant are sought for. With a view to answering the demand, efforts are exerted to put to practical use, and improve, an EcoloG grinding technique. The goal is to reduce to half the energy that the grinding process is now consuming. The EcoloG technique is a grinding method under which vegetable oil mist is cooled for lubrication and a small amount of cooling water is fed to the point of grinding for removing chips. In fiscal 1999, a survey was conducted on technical literature, patents, and the like in and out of Japan for the study of the actual state of dry machining, and then the course of future studies was clearly established. Studies were also carried out aiming at the practical application and improvement of the EcoloG grinding technique, and the technique achieved a quality level as high as that of the conventional coolant-aided method in a process of grinding a shaft to have an accurate outer diameter by use of an ordinary wheel head. R and D on harmonized molecular materials aim at establishment of the technology fabricating self-assembled organic molecular films on solid surfaces which have potentials of mechanical response to electric fields, electroluminescence or optical functions. Molecule harmonization expresses new structures and functions difficult to be expressed by each molecule alone, by cooperative interaction between molecules due to noncovalent bond. Functional thin films were developed by controlling alignment and/or arrangement of molecules with an aid of self-assembling processes. Thiol compounds with larger dielectric anisotropy were synthesized as electric field responsive self-assembled films. {pi}-conjugated compounds composed of phenyl-capped oligothiophenes were synthesized as electroluminescent self-assembled films, and their high crystallinity and efficient electroluminescence were found. Heat- and solvent-resistant lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) aligning polymers such as polyamine and polyimine were synthesized as new optically functional LLC dye self-assembled films. (NEDO)

Research and development has been made with an objective to replace the electric discharge processing consuming a large amount of energy and having environmental load, with the cutting process consuming less energy while maintaining the equivalent processing precision. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 2000. Development of cutting tools has made three times or more as many multi-aspect utilization as compared to conventional tools possible by researching the tip shapes. In addition, ultra hard end mill suitable for cutting very hard materials using an ultrasonic cutting head was fabricated on the trial basis, and its cutting capability was verified. In developing the cutting processing heard, a vibration mode possible of cutting with the ultra hard tool was generated, ATC has become possible, and the possibility of cutting hard-to-cut materials was verified. For processing a narrow and deep part, an improved type tool was developed, whereas the practical cutting performance suppressing wear of the blade tip was obtained. To deal with the environment, development and prototype fabrication were performed on a unit having a grease lubricated high-speed main shaft that is considered to be the mainstream in the future. In the operation test at 20,000 min-L, know-how was acquired in relation with the basic performance, manufacture and use of the unit. (NEDO)

A polygonal mirror in a printer and the main shaft of a high-speed milling machine are used as models for the development of technology for applying C/C (carbon/carbon) composite materials to machine components that are required to turn at high speeds. Various C/C composites are tested for flexural strength and thermal expansion for the designing and manufacturing of C/C composites for the polygonal mirror and main shaft. The first coating on the C/C composite is deposited by laser/plasma hybrid spraying, and is a Mo coating. A spraying robot is experimentally built for homogeneous coating. In the case of polygonal mirror, an Al coating is deposited further by the gas-deposition method. The polygonal mirror proves excellent in both dimension and reflectance, and attains the target speed of 45,000rpm. In the case of milling machine main shaft, however, it is not strong enough to withstand 40,000rpm although it is a success from a viewpoint of coating technology and manufacturing technology. 15 refs., 33 figs., 13 tabs.

This report summarizes the fiscal 1999 basic research result on industrial technology strategy of a semiconductor equipment field, viewing until 5-10 years after. For the future semiconductor industry, the favorable cycling of creation of new demands through performance improvement, and further technology innovation through market expansion is essential absolutely. Since technology development is followed by investment, not only the performance of each equipment but also the higher productivity and cost balance of the whole factory are essential. Self-intelligent function and networking are thus necessary for the equipment. As measures for environment preservation and energy saving, such innovative technologies are required as recycling, reuse, reaction process improvement and alternative technology. Because of diverse final products and a short life time of products, a large-scale collective investment is becoming difficult. A mini-line sequential investment production system according to demand scales is under investigation. Some issues such as micro-technology, realization of 300mm wafer, modularization, CIM, reliability and standardization are also described. (NEDO)

By establishing microtechnology using molecular-level bottoming-up (molecular harmonization) by imitating the system of living organism, the paper described the R and D of molecular harmonized materials aiming at developing high-functional/high-performance materials such as high-performance catalyst, photo-information functional materials and sensing materials. Under consignment from NEDO, Japan Chemical innovation Institute started the 5-year plan in fiscal 1997. Self-assembled molecular films, in which organic molecules are orderly arranged by self-assembly, aim at developing new memory/optical/sensing materials. Mesophase materials which are such materials as liquid crystal showing the intermediate state between solid and liquid, develop optical/photoconductive materials using precise molecular orientation controllability. Macroporous materials are such substances as zeolite having molecular size micro pores. The paper aims at establishment of synthesis techniques of them and development of high-performance catalyst, etc. using them. In the comprehensive investigational research, conducted was a survey of the trend overseas in addition to a study of subjects in question. Further, the supporting basic study was reconsigned to universities, etc. 57 refs., 62 figs., 17 tabs.

Evaluation of function-enriched edible oils: Preventive effect of lipid peroxidation; (a Heat exposure: Commercial rape-seed oil and extra virgin oil were used as controls. For preparation of the test samples (function fortified oils of tomato-juice waste-residue and grape wine- ferment waste-residues, it is described in above section (1. All oil preparations were exposed to high temperature at 150oC and peroxide value (POV, acid value and TBARS were measured at various times as described. The methods of measurements of POV, acid value and TBARS were adapted conventional standard method described elsewhere. (b Light exposure: Similar to (a they were exposed to excessive light using Nippon Ikaga Kikai (Tokyo, LH-200-RDS equipped with fluorescent light tube (x3, NEC FL40S-2XN, 3.2K lux at 390-730nm. Result and Discussions: (1 Extraction of carotenoids etc. Modern edible oil refining processes are highly elaborated and efficient. The most of the commercial edible oils in the market are so purified that many important antioxidant components are mostly removed during refining process. Oils became mostly colorless and odorless; and they lack are devoid of anti-oxidative or radical scavenging components. We measured anti-alkyl peroxy radical (ROO.-scavenging activity, and found that many commercial oils have very little such activity (Figure 1. Many disposal- of tomato juice or extraction waste-residues in wine making, yet contained significant amount of functionally useful components that may be recovered by immersing the dried waste residues in the functionally poor oil, ie., low grade oils. Figure 2A, B shows it was indeed possible to recover such component like lycopene and carotenoids, and the spectrum of this oil exhibits multiple peaks correspond tomato lycopene. (2 Antioxidation activity: (a Acid value after light and heat exposure. Commercial highly purified edible oils are vulnerable for oxidation and resulting in lipid or alkyl hydroperoxides formation (ROOH, which

The R and D were carried out on a system by which the long life of coolant of machine tools can be achieved and a system to process waste efficiently, economically and with less environmental loads, and the FY 2000 results were summed up. In the R and D of a system to prevent degradation of low energy coolant, measurement was made of effects of the degradation prevention system at a laboratory level, and it was found out that propagation of bacteria causing the degradation can be prevented with pH kept high. Further, it was admitted that the alkali effect on metal formability was not very much. As to the coolant processing, in the present situation, most of the coolant is taken back by industrial waste processing dealers. So, the development of the low energy waste liquid processing system is earnestly desired. In the R and D of the low energy waste liquid processing system, test on characteristics evaluation was conducted about each method of systems. Subjects to be improved/solved were extracted such as the point that volatile organic matters are included in condensed water after evaporation of waste liquid and there seems to be a possibility of needing the secondary processing. A lathe, which is a central tool in a factory of automobiles or home electric appliances, tends to suffer decreased machining precision resulting from thermal deformation. This project is aimed at development of the energy-saving, high-precision lathe technologies using self compulsory cooling and thermal insensitive technologies as the countermeasures against the thermal deformation. The self compulsory cooling is a method of cooling by evaporation of water with an evaporative, water-absorptive cloth being bonded to a machine tool surface around the major axis. The thermal insensitive technologies include the three-dimensionally zero-center design technologies which help design a lathe in such a way to set the processing point (tool working point) at the base of thermal deformation in the X, Y and Z axis directions; material combination technologies to control thermal deformation; and coloring technologies to control thermal deformation. The development target is the high-precision lathe fabrication technologies, which realize a temporal precision change of 1 to 2 {mu}m or less per work dimension of 100mm. The activities cover 5 areas, including development of elementary technologies for each item and construction/evaluation of the full-size test unit. (NEDO)
