Before the 2017 election of the Director-General of WHO, and given the importance of human rights to global health governance through WHO, Health and Human Rights asked the three final candidates for their views on human rights, WHO's human rights mandate, and the role of human rights in WHO programming. These questions were developed by the author in collaboration with Audrey Chapman, Lisa Forman, Paul Hunt, Dainius Pūras, Javier Vasquez and Carmel Williams. Based on responses to these questions from each of the three candidates, this Perspective was originally published online on April 26, 2017. On May 23, 2017, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was elected Director-General and will begin his five-year term on July 1, 2017.

  8. A DANE WRITES ABOUT CHOPIN. PEER HULTBERG’S “PRELUDES” AS AN EXAMPLE OF A CONTEMPORARY DANISH BIOGRAPHICAL NOVEL

Full Text Available The paper A Dane writes about Chopin. Peer Hultberg’s “Preludes” as an example of a contemporary Danish biographical novel concerns the condition of a contemporary Danish biographical novel. The main focus is put on Peer Hultberg’s work Preludes on the famous Polish composer, Fryderyk Chopin. The author of the paper uses the definition of a biographical novel as Maria Jasinska understands it, and the definition of a modernist literary novel by Stephen J. Walton. The article also addresses other contemporary biographical novels written in Scandinavia. Its main aim is to examine in what respects Hultberg’s novel deviates from the standards of a modernist biographical novel. The research is based on four criteria: focus put on one character, chronological structure of the narration, including all life stages, presence of the milestones in the protagonist’s professional career and appearance of authentic characters in the novel’s plot. As it turns out, Preludes hardly fulfills any of the above-mentioned requirements. Although the protagonist is clearly defined, the polyphonic structure of the narration makes it difficult to focus on one character only. The chronological composition is present, but the plot does not include any of the milestones in the composer’s career, since the novel only concerns his childhood. As to authentic characters, they play a peripheral role in the novel’s plot. One can therefore assume that Peer Hultberg’s Preludes is a postmodernist biographical novel, where a fragment replaces the whole, and one stage of life, namely childhood, is capable of telling a story of the origin of genius.

Canagliflozin, a sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor, improves glycemic control and reduces body weight and blood pressure (BP in a broad range of patients with T2DM. This post hoc analysis assessed the effects of canagliflozin on the components of metabolic syndrome in patients with T2DM and metabolic syndrome. Methods: This analysis was based on data from 2 head-to-head studies of canagliflozin in patients with T2DM on background metformin versus glimepiride (study 1 and background metformin plus sulfonylurea versus sitagliptin 100 mg (study 2. Changes from baseline in glycemic efficacy, anthropometric measures, BP, and lipids were evaluated with canagliflozin versus glimepiride and sitagliptin at week 52 in patients who met ≥2 of the criteria for metabolic syndrome (in addition to T2DM: triglycerides ≥1.7 mmol/L; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C <1.0 mmol/L (men or <1.3 mmol/L (women; waist circumference ≥102 cm (non-Asian men, ≥88 cm (non-Asian women, >90 cm (Asian men, or >80 cm (Asian women; diagnosis of hypertension or meeting BP-related criteria (systolic BP ≥130 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥85 mmHg. Safety was assessed based on adverse event reports. Results: In study 1, canagliflozin 100 and 300 mg provided similar and greater HbA1c reductions versus glimepiride, respectively. In study 2, canagliflozin 300 mg provided greater HbA1c lowering versus sitagliptin 100 mg. Canagliflozin also reduced fasting plasma glucose, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, BP, and triglycerides, and increased HDL-C and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol versus

The project on construction of the internal target assembly for isotope production was continued in the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, in cooperation with the Cyclotron Section and Division of Mechanical Constructions of the Institute, and with the JINR, Dubna. In the meantime, in pilot experiments on the internal beam of the AIC-144 cyclotron, small activities of 11 C PET tracer were obtained from proton irradiated B 2 0 3 targets. A joint project with the Silesian Medical Academy, on applications of 32 P sources pure (β - emitter) in intravascular brachytherapy (IVBT), was started. Chemical and ionic methods of preparation of 32 P sources and their TL dosimetry were tested in cooperation with the Laboratory of the Ion Implanter and with the Health Physics Section of the Institute. Measurements of the activity of selenoenzymes in the context of human thyroid health or disease were continued in cooperation with the Medical College of the Jagiellonian University, and with the Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen, Scotland
