    The nonlinear optics with light-light conversion and electro-optical effects are expected to be the optical materials of the next generation for their functions of, e.g., conversion of the infrared laser beams into visual light, and optical switching. The efforts are directed to development of the procedures for exploring and designing various raw materials, and technologies for synthesizing the raw materials and for producing and evaluating the materials, in order to develop highly nonlinear, high-speed responding materials. Three areas are studied; for the organic materials, the chiral nonlinear effects are demonstrated and the new procedure for determining electrical susceptibility ({gamma}) is developed; for the dispersed materials, highly nonlinear susceptibility of glass dispersed with fine particles of semiconductors, e.g., CuCl, is realized, and possibility of controlled dispersion of fine semiconductor particles in an organic polymer is established; and for development of the superlattice-based materials, the layered structures of thin organic superlattice films are studied, the thin semiconductor films of high purity and little defects are prepared, and development of the three-dimensional structures is started. The individual researches are conducted, 3 for the organic materials, 4 for the dispersed materials, and 2 for the superlattice-based materials. The targets of susceptibility and response are 10{sup -8}esu or more and 10ps or less, respectively. (NEDO)

    The final assessment of researches on non-linear, opto-electronic materials was conducted in FY 1988. These researches are evaluated as the world-level basic researches, high in potential of giving ripple effects on various areas. The R and D themes are organic, low-molecular-weight materials; technology for orientation-controlled crystal growth; conjugated polymer films; microcrystallite-doped glasses using vapor deposition and stuffing method; glass composite materials using sol-gel method and ultra-low melting point glass; nanoparticle-dispersed glasses using super-cooling technology; materials dispersed in organic compounds; organic superlattice formation; three-dimensionally superstructured materials; and comprehensive surveys and researches. The researches and surveys on the common basic techniques were recommissioned to Universities of Tokyo, Keio Gijuku, Nagoya, Tohoku and Hokkaido. These themes are analytical methods for non-linear optical characteristics; morphology-controlled crystal growth of nonlinear-optical organic materials and fundamental studies on all-optical devices; large enhancement of optical nonlinearity and its mechanism in nanocrystals embedded in matrices; improvement of organic materials for high performance; and ultrafast nonlinear optical processes and their application for controlling ultrafast optical pulses.     Described herein are the results of the industrial science and technology research and development project for nonlinear optoelectronic materials. The more functional chiral and pi-conjugated compounds are investigated as the organic, low-molecular-weight materials. The technologies for the orientation-controlled crystal growth are continuously investigated. Polyacetylene is investigated as the conjugated pi-electron system. The glass-dispersed systems, prepared by the sol-gel, superlow-melting glass and super-cooling methods, are investigated. In order to elucidate the relationship between the organic superlattice and properties (e.g., photoelectronic properties), the intramolecular interactions under the superlattice conditions are estimated by the theoretical chemical calculations, and the optimum structures deduced from the measured properties are proposed. The thin, composite films of fine metallic particles and glass are prepared by the multi-dimensional sputtering, to explore the constituent materials suitable for the three-dimensional superstructures, and their properties are analyzed. The thin semiconductor films of superlattices are prepared by the molecular beam epitaxy method, to investigate the optimization of the structures and compositions. The basic aspects of the three-dimensional superstructures, prepared by the superfine machining, are investigated. The results of the comprehensive investigations and researches are also described.     Described herein are the FY 1990 results of the research and development project for the optoelectronic materials, implemented to cope with the highly information-oriented societies. The FY 1990 is the second year for the phase-I project of the basic plan, and the R and D efforts are directed to elucidation of the mechanisms involved in the nonlinear phenomena, exploration and designs of various materials, and investigations of the technologies for, e.g., the material synthesis and evaluation. The themes to be investigated by the long-term project include exploration and preparation of the superfine particles and base materials for the organic materials; and crystal growth, dispersion of the fine particles and development of the superlattices for development of the materials. The comprehensive investigation and research program investigates the trends of the related technologies, both domestic and foreign. A total of 9 research themes are recommissioned to 9 enterprises. They include organic, low-molecular-weight materials, growth of orientation-controlled crystals, films of high-molecular-weight organic conjugated compounds, glass-dispersed materials (prepared by the vapor-phase, impregnation of porous glass, sol-gel, superlow-melting glass and super-cooling methods), organic dispersed materials, development of the organic superlattices, and development of the three-dimensional superstructures.     Described herein are the FY 1992 results of the research and development project for the optoelectronic materials. The FY 1992 is the last year for the phase-I project of the basic plan, and the results are evaluated mainly viewed from extent of attainment of the interim targets. For the organic materials, the highly unique chiral nonlinear compounds are further developed, and direction for the investigations of the conjugated low-molecular-weight compounds is established. The excellent high-molecular-weight films are developed. For the dispersed materials, those developed include CuCl-dispersed glass, CdTe laminated glass developed by the laser evaporation method, glass dispersed with semiconductors at high concentrations, and dispersed materials with high-molecular-weight materials as the matrices. For the material development, those technologies investigated are orientation controlling of the crystals for thin organic films, and development of superlattices. A total of 9 research themes are recommissioned to 9 enterprises.     As to the development of organic base materials, the paper is going ahead with an evaluation, higher performance and further use as materials of basic optical properties of quirale nonlinear materials and organic conjugate base materials which are promising among organic low molecular materials. As the development of orientation control crystal growth technology, grooves for orientation control were formed on the surface of the lead glass substrate, from which thin film single crystals were obtained. The nonlinear response was studied of the glass where semiconducting fine particles dispersed in matrix glass. Glass scattering base prototype materials were selected by the sol-gel method and ultra-low melting-point glass method. The glass dispersion base materials by the very fast cooling method was also studied. For the purpose of realizing a high speed switching characteristic, a processing technology was developed of ultra fine particle dispersing polymer light waveguide. As to the technology for super lattice, the optimum nonlinear performance materials were selected mainly with the optimum complex super lattice base. Moreover, the three-dimensional super structuring technology was constructed to improve nonlinear optical characteristics.     The necessary technology realizing Terabit class optical network is the signal multiplexing both in temporal and spectral domains. Controllability of ultrafast optoelectronic systems is therefore the priority issue. Specifically we chose semiconductor lasers as the key devices. The methodology for performance improvement and the creation of novel functionality are investigated. Firstly compression of semiconductor laser pulse reached the world record of 65 femto second. Secondly a proposal was made to control mode locked semiconductor lasers via subharmonic synchronization and a substantial phase noise reduction was demonstrated. Thirdly a new technology was developed to realize broadband anti-reflection coating on semiconductor laser amplifier facet, bringing about significant performance improvement. To compensate the dispersion induced signal distortion a broadband semiconductor laser amplifier four wave mixing was analyzed and also demonstrated experimentally. (NEDO)

    The purpose is to develop technologies on efficient generation and control of femtosecond optical pulses using a novel semiconductor optical devices. We studied a modelocked Cr:forsterite laser pumped by a diode pumped Nd:YVO4 laser. Both Kerr lens mode locking and semi-conductor saturable absorber initiated mode locking have been achieved. The minimum pulse width for pure Kerr lens mode locking is 26.4 fs, while for the semiconductor saturable absorber initiated mode locking, the pulse width is 36 fs. The latter is very resistant to the environment perturbations. We also present the measured dispersion data for the forsterite crystal and the SESAM, and discuss the dispersion compensation technique. (NEDO)

    Ultrafast modulation of second harmonies from a Langmuir-Blodgett film consisting of a ruthenium complex was demonstrated for the first time. The mechanism of the modulator of SHG intensity on laser irradiation was ascribed to the change of molecular hyperpolarizability of the ruthenium complex on going from the ground state to the excited state. 9 refs., 12 figs.

    Investigations were given on nanocrystals of CuCl and CdTe with regard to their nonlinear optical mechanism. The experiment used a femto-second pump probe spectroscope. The experiment on CuCl nanocrystals revealed the following facts: in the case where one photon is absorbed into one nanocrystal, cascade mitigation occurs to the pair of electrons and holes, and exciters; and in the case where two photons are absorbed into one nanocrystal, exciter molecules are made via the pair of electrons and holes and the exciters. Thus, it was found that the optical nonlinearity occurs when more than two photons are absorbed into one nanocrystal, and inter-exciter interactions and formation of the exciter molecules are the physical causes thereof. The experiment on CdTe nanocrystals indicated that electrons and holes produced by laser beam are distributed instantaneously between the size-quantized discrete levels, and that temperature in the electron system drops with lapse of time. 9 refs., 6 figs.

  11. Evaluation of Differences in Automated QT/QTc Measurements between Fukuda Denshi and Nihon Koden Systems

    Background Automatic measurement becomes a preference, and indeed a necessity, when analyzing 1000 s of ECGs in the setting of either drug-inducing QT prolongation screening or genome-wide association studies of QT interval. The problem is that individual manufacturers apply different computerized algorithms to measure QT interval. We conducted a comparative study to assess the outcomes with different automated measurements of QT interval between ECG machine manufacturers and validated the related heart rate correction methods. Methods and Results Herein, we directly compared these different commercial systems using 10,529 Fukuda Denshi ECGs and 72,754 Nihon Kohden ECGs taken in healthy Japanese volunteers. Log-transformed data revealed an equal optimal heart rate correction formula of QT interval for Fukuda Denshi and Nihon Kohden, in the form of QTc = QT/RR−0.347. However, with the raw data, the optimal heart rate correction formula of QT interval was in the form of QTc = QT+0.156×(1-RR) for Fukuda Denshi and QTc = QT+0.152×(1-RR) for Nihon Kohden. After optimization of heart rate correction of QT interval by the linear regression model using either log-transformed data or raw data, QTc interval was ∼10 ms longer in Nihon Kohden ECGs than in those recorded on Fukuda Denshi machines. Indeed, regression analysis revealed that differences in the ECG machine used had up to a two-fold larger impact on QT variation than gender difference. Such an impact is likely to be of considerable importance when ECGs for a given individual are recorded on different machines in the setting of multi-institutional joint research. Conclusions We recommend that ECG machines of the same manufacturer should be used to measure QT and RR intervals in the setting of multi-institutional joint research. It is desirable to unify the computer algorithm for automatic QT and RR measurements from an ECG. PMID:25229724

    Since light can be transformed into electricity, electrolysis of water using light is possible naturally, and photosynthesis in the nature is based on this principle. The reaction field in which electrochemical energy necessary for decomposition of water is generated using light at the first process of photosynthesis is a biofilm less than 10nm thick which is called thylakoid film. In this article, the effects are roughly explained which have been made for constructing an artificial system corresponding to the thylakoid film. Accumulation of knowledge of the molecular level is necessary for the construction of the artificial system and the three dimensional structure concerning the reaction center of photosynthetic bacteria has been determined. At the reaction center, oxidation species of electron donor and reduction species of electron acceptor are generated by charge separation which succeeds electron excitation by light energy. In order to lead the above process to materialistic production, efforts are being made for construction of a reaction center model compound for artificial photosynthesis from both physical chemistry and organic chemistry and the positive results have steadily been obtained in the development of photocatalysis of a semiconductor. 9 figs.

    The growth temperature range was greatly expanded of atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) expected as the growth process of ultra-thin stacks. Ga layers and As layers were formed one after the other on a GaAs substrate in the atmosphere of trimethylgallium (TMG) or AsH{sub 2} supplied alternately, by KrF excimer laser irradiation normal to the substrate. As a result, the growth temperature range was 460-540{degree}C nearly 10 times that of 500 {plus minus} several degrees centigrade in conventional thermal growth method. Based on the experimental result where light absorption of source molecules adsorbed on a substrate surface was larger than that under gaseous phase condition, new adsorbed layer enhancement model was proposed to explain above irradiation effect verifying it by experiments. As this photoenhancement technique is applied to other materials, possible fabrication of new crystal structures as a super lattice with ultra-thin stacks of single atomic layers is expected because of a larger freedom in material combination for hetero-ALE. 11 refs., 7 figs.

    This paper describes nonlinear effect recognized in Vibroseis data. Harmonics is a wave of frequency in integer factors generated in association with basic sweep vibrated by Vibroseis. Harmonics is generated because vibration in the vicinity of seismic source contains nonlinear terms. Seismic exploration using the reflection method often discusses propagation of seismic waves hypothesized as a linear phenomenon. Vibroseis data analysis, however, requires evaluation of the effect of the harmonics on accuracy. Vibroseis investigation measures may be taken by eliminating n-order harmonics by using the phase control method, and generating seismic source sweep in which the phase is shifted by 180/(n-1) each time in order to leave the basic sweep. Methods to increase the sweep length include a method to expel strain to a location outside the range of the subject travel time. Up-sweep (a sweep changing from low frequencies to higher frequencies) is also a means capable of avoiding harmonics effects. Vibroseis investigations currently performed adopt this method frequently because of it having little technological and economic problems. 10 refs., 3 figs.

    Nonlinear full-wave tomography (FWT) is under investigation to improve the estimation accuracy of Vp/Vs distributions. Full-wave tomography is one of the underground structure exploration methods mainly using Tarantola`s nonlinear local optimization method (LOM). Numerical experiment for FWT was carried out assuming relatively weak nonlinear underground structure. In the case of inversion by local optimization method, adequate preconditioning is important. Utilization of geological information is also effective in estimating low-frequency components of a model. As far as data are obtained under proper observation arrangement, even in actual field, precise estimation of Vp/Vs distributions is possible by FWT using explosion in a hole as wave source. In full-wave tomography, selection of observation arrangement is essential for both Vp and Vs. However, the proper arrangement is different between Vp and Vs. Approach to different analyses for Vp and Vs is also necessary by using only proper data for Vp and Vs among obtained data sets. 4 figs.

    Hydrophilicity results when the surface of titanium dioxide is reduced for the specified oxygen to be replaced by hydroxyl groups. The ease with which such a structural change occurs is subject to variation between titanium dioxide crystal surfaces, and is dependent greatly on the atmosphere. No hydrophilic trend is observed in an atmosphere of oxygen only without moisture and, in darkness without light, hydrophobicity occurs early. Although the contacta angle titanium dioxide with water with stability is not known, yet it is presumed, on the analogy of the case of strontium titanate, that it is in the range of 20-40 degrees. A hydrophilic trend below the range is attrributed to structural changes. The control of surface wettability is one of the basic tasks to fulfill in various kinds of mechanisms and manufacturing processes. The technology of wettability control using a titanium dioxide coating which is quite durable will be applied not only to functions involving defogging, dripproof, and self-cleaning, but also to the control of heat transmission in the mechanism and to the bonding process.     Selective photoexcitation and photoionization of neodymium atoms were studied basically by using laser. Also, using their properties, feasibility of laser material purification (LPM) technology in gaseous phase was presented. In the selective 3-step ionization, laser beam with two kinds of proper wave length causes resonance exitation of the target element, which goes up to the excitation level of the first step, and the element is ionized by the second laser beam and the third laser beam. The 3-step ionization scheme by a single wave length laser beam of 577.612nm was used for the ionization of Nd. Nd ionized selectively by laser beam was recovered as thin layer at the negative potential side of plane electrodes placed at both sides of the laser irradiation area. In the layer formed by the TPD technology with this scheme, it is possible to decrease impuritis such as Pr by 1/16 and to form highly purified thin layer. 13 refs., 12 figs., 1 tab.

    This paper describes the following matters related to application of photonic and electronic characteristics of Fullerene: C60 crystals precipitated from benzene aqueous solution have an fcc structure and an hcp structure mixed, with its mixing ratio depending on hysteresis of test specimens. Mono-crystal thin films of C60 and C70 can be formed on mica substrates by means of a vacuum deposition process. On a CaF2 (111) substrate under normal temperature, a C60 thin film with the fcc structure grows in a single direction in the plane having its (111) plane paralleled with the substrate face. However, on a substrate under elevated temperatures, the film grows in two different directions in the plane, making grid conformity better in C60 and CaF2. Thin films of C60 and C70 transfer to a low temperature phase at a temperature of about 260 K or lower. Carbon nanocapsules containing LaC2 monocrystals can be obtained from arc discharge of a graphite electrode containing La oxides. The paper introduces nonlinear optical characteristics of C60 and C70 thin films, and light conductive polymers doped with C6O and C70. 39 refs., 10 figs.

The key technology that supports the sharing of electronic information was rearranged from the viewpoint of information gathering, information rearrangement, and information utilization. The reduction in cost for information gathering and rearrangement is indispensable to the promotion of much information sharing. However, each automation method presently causes the deterioration in quality of the rearranged information and the increase in cost for information utilization. To realize a practical electronic information sharing system, it is important to combine the key technologies properly so that the total cost balance of information gathering and information utilization is improved.     We report photo-generation of highly hydrophilic surface of titanium dioxide. The photo-induced hydrophilicizing is achieved by photo-generation of Ti{sup 4+} to Ti{sup 3+} at definite sites on the surface, resulting in preferential adsorption of hydroxyl groups on corresponding oxygen vacant sites. We also report the photo-generation of titanium dioxide amphiphilic surface on definite photo illumination condition. The unique character of this surface is ascribed to the microstructure of hydrophilic and oreophilic domain. The hydrophilic or amphiphilic titanium dioxide coating can be applied for antifogging mirror or glass and also self-cleaning paint for various industrial materials. Several commercial applications including antifogging automobile side-view mirror or self-cleaning exterior ceramic tile has been starting to hit the market. (author)

    This paper shows the impact of the irradiation from an additional light source during the deposition of hydrogenated amorphous silicon by photo-CVD deposition. Using a mercury sensitized photo-CVD process from Disilan (Si {sub 2} H {sub 6}) and hydrogen, silicon was deposited. A 40W low pressure mercury lamp was applied as the light source. A portion of the substrate was in addition irradiated using an Xg-He lamp through a thermal filter. Irradiation of the substrate using only Xg-He lamp produced no deposition, since this light has a wavelength which is too long to produce the SiH {sub 3}-radicals needed for Si deposition. The additional Xg-He light source was discovered to cause an increased thickness of deposited a-Si:H film and a transmission of the band structure. The reasons of these are considered that the influence of irradiation is not limited to film thickness, but that irradiation also impacts the composition of the a-Si:H film so as to cause a reduction in the hydrogen content. 10 figs., 1 tab.

    Nonlinear AC dissipation current waveforms associated with a Garton effect were observed on an oil-film composite insulating system by the previously reported measuring method of dissipation microcurrent waveforms in AC electric fields. A laminated composite of polypropylene and oxidized insulating oil was used as a specimen, and dielectric loss tangents (tan {delta}) were measured by applying AC voltage of 50-400Hz to it. The tan {delta} increased up to a peak value with the applied voltage, and its peak point shifted toward a high voltage side decreasing the peak value with an increase in frequency, indicating the influence of a Garton effect. The amplitude of AC dissipation current waveforms associated with a Garton effect increased up to a peak value with the applied voltage corresponding to the tan {delta}, and the phase of the peak point delayed with an increase in frequency. As a result, the generation behavior of nonlinear AC dissipation current could be observed through applied voltage and frequency as parameters. 5 refs., 6 figs.

    Low-frequency Tollmien-Schlichting (T-S) waves may be thought generated as a result of high-frequency disturbance between two proximity frequency modes grown unstably in a separation shear layer causing secondary nonlinear interference to occur. This fact has been verified by a numerical simulation. A non-compression Navier-Stokes equation was used for the fundamental equation, a tertiary windward difference for the convection term, and a secondary central difference for other differential calculus. The Reynolds number was 200, and the disturbance was introduced by applying `v` variation continuously on the wall face. Non-introduction of the disturbance results in a steady flow. Disturbance frequencies of 0.15 and 0.20 were selected as disturbance frequencies from the relationship between the spatial amplification and the frequency dependency. The structure of the excited disturbance agreed with the intrinsic mode. The difference mode due to nonlinear interference grows as the basic mode was amplified. The basic mode decays sharply in the boundary layer after reattachment, while the difference mode decays slowly. Distribution of the difference mode is a distribution of viscous T-S waves, which may be converted into the intrinsic mode. 8 refs., 7 figs.

    Experiments of temperature measurement were conducted in high temperature and high pressure geothermal wells using optical fiber sensor. A temperature measurement system using optical fiber sensor was applied to geothermal wells. Working availability was confirmed under the condition up to the depth of 1,750 m and the temperature of 240 centigrade. Observed values agreed well with those observed by the conventional temperature logging. Durability of the optical fiber sensor was also sufficient. The maximum standard deviations of measured values were 1.3 centigrade at the depth of 1,750 m at 195 centigrade for the loop-type sensor, and 3.7 centigrade at the depth of 365 m at about 200 centigrade for the single-end sensor. Although the accuracy was inferior to the conventional measurement using a thermo couple, it was enough to be applied to usual temperature logging. Furthermore, for this system, the temperature profile in the whole well can be monitored, simultaneously. Through the experiments, the detailed successive change of temperature profile accompanied with the water injection can be clearly illustrated. 3 refs., 7 figs.

    Regarding excitation and deexcitation due to collision of electrons and deexcitation due to collision of baryons in nonequilibrium plasma, explanation is made about the general characteristics of the elementary processes involving their formation and disappearance and about the prediction of their sectional areas and velocity constants. As for the process of the formation of excited atoms and molecules by collision of electrons, it may be divided into the direct excitation in the ground state, excitation and light emission toward the resonance state, reexcitation and transformation of excited particles, recombination of electrons and positive atomic ions, and dissociation and recombination of electrons and positive molecular ions. As for the process of the disappearance of excited particles, there exist various courses it may follow, and it is quite complicated because it is dependent on the types of particles involved and the conditions the process proceeds under. Although the skeleton has been built of the theory of derivation of the sectional area of excitation due to collision of electrons and atoms/molecules, yet it is accurate enough only when applied to simple atomic/molecular systems, is far from satisfying in general, and is to be augmented by data from future experiments. 22 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

    Research and development is actively conducted on machining technologies using plasma in various fields, with studies energetically pursued on etching techniques or those of forming a thin film by the use of high frequency and microwave plasma. The EBEP system jointly developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and Institute of Physical and Chemical Research is a plasma source for forming a high density plasma by implanting into a plasma chamber from the outside a high-current electron beam accelerated to an energy of approximately 60 to 100eV where the collision cross-section of gas ionization is maximized. The characteristics of the system are such as (1) it enables electron energy distribution to be controlled from outside by varying acceleration voltage, (2) it excels in the controllability of ion energy and (3) it allows to form a steady high-density plasma in a nonmagnetic field. This paper presents the generating principle of EBEP, its plasma characteristics, etching technique using EBEP, thin film forming technique by EBEP-CVD method, and multipurpose apparatus for research and development. 6 refs., 7 figs., 1 tab.

    This paper reveals that using distorted thin GaAs film can realize high polarization in spin polarized electron ray, and introduces properties of the developed ray source. The paper also touches on the application thereof to property physics. Realization of the high spin polarization is based on use of the `optical polarization method`. With this method, electrons in specific spin state are excited into a conduction band by utilizing the selection law used when valency electrons of zincblende type crystal such as GaAs absorb circular polarization. These electrons are taken out into vacuum and used as polarized electron beams. In order to realize uniformly distorted GaAs film, a method was discussed, with which the thin GaAs films are grown on substrates with different lattice constants, and the films are distorted by means of lattice mismatch. GaAs(1-x)Px was used for the substrates. GaAs(1-x)Px has the lattice constant decrease as the P`s mixed crystal ratio `x` increases. If a thin GaAs film is grown on this substrate, it is possible to obtain GaAs which is subjected to compression stress in the direction parallel with the growing surface, and tensile stress in the vertical direction. 13 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.

    The present paper proposes a new taste recognition system using optical response patterns from multi-channel optical fiber sensors having potential sensitive dye coatings. It was found that the sensors give large changes in optical absorption spectra of the dyes when they are immersed in various taste solutions. Consequently, it was shown that the sensors can be used as a taste sensor. Six dyes, which give large changes in dye absorption, were selected from twenty dyes and used for six-channel optical fiber taste sensors array. The absorption spectra change data were processed by multiple discriminant analysis and neural networks using back-propagation algorithm. From the analytical results, it was demonstrated that salty (NaCl), bitter (quinidine), sweet (sucrose), sour (HCl), and umami (sodium glutamate) substances can be recognized from each other by using the optical taste sensor system. 11 refs., 8 figs., 2 tabs.

    Studies are made to define the working mechanism of semiconductor photocatalysts such as TiO2 and to establish designing guidelines for improving on their activity and functions. TiO2 in the air actively produces oxygen seeds for the oxidation and removal of NOx, etc. It is desired that a catalyst have a specific surface area large enough to retain the product of its action. To meet the need, a thin-film photocatalyst which is an aggregate of TiO2 crystals is produced by burning a film of a sol/gel system of reaction doped with macromolecules. This product has a larger specific surface area and is higher in pollutant-removing performance, and may be put into practical use. In another experiment, metal-carrying particles TiO2 suspended in water are employed for the reduction of CO2. Though the main product of catalysts carrying Pt or Pd is methane, a photocatalyst carrying RuO2 produces acetic acid mainly and loses less activity with the passage of time. A hybrid photocatalyst is composed of an organic pigment and inorganic semiconductor, synthesized through a covalent bond between a sililated-surface thin TiO2 film and porphyrin. It is confirmed that the newly developed process brings about an increase in electron migration efficiency. 3 figs.

    The paper investigated/studied `space light modulation materials,` `dynamic hologram/memory materials,` `optical waveguide path materials,` etc. which become key materials in the high speed two dimensional processing. As to electrooptical materials proposed in this investigational study, the external electric field and the electric charges generated make quality of molecules themselves directly change to memory strong/weak signals of light. Therefore, the response velocity becomes less than a millionth of that of the liquid crystal display, and high speed which is needed for realtime moving image processing is anticipated. Hologram includes the phase information in addition to information on light strength. Therefore, it is a large capacity record medium and at the same time a record medium which can read/write two dimensional information as it is. With optical fiber, images cannot be transmitted as they are.     As a series of the studies on the mechanical properties of spider threads, the effects of ultra- violet rays (UV) and water was investigated using drag lines of Nephila clavata (Jorougumo) and capture threads of Argiope amoena (Koganegumo). It was shown for the effect of water that (1) the drag line was contracted as soon as immersed in water (super contraction), while the capture thread was not so contracted and the viscid droplets attached to it were dissolved in water, and (2) the super contracted drag fine behaved like a capture thread with a j shaped load-draw ratio curve. For the effect of UV, it was found that (1) the degradation due to UV irradiation with short wave length was accelerated more than that with long one and (2) the degree of degradation for each wave length was governed by the integrated irradiation energy of UV. 9 refs., 8 figs.

    The composite panel with photovoltaic-thermo module becomes higher in energy-saving than the conventional air-conditioning system by the independent radiational heating and cooling effect obtained when the generating panel using a solar cell module is combined with the heating and cooling panel using a thermo-element module. The output of a solar cell module can be directly used because the solar cell module operates in AC. This paper reports the relation between the absorbed value and power consumption of the cooling panel, while paying attention to the cooling panel. The performance coefficient of the maximum absorbed value from an non-absorbing substance to a cooling panel is 2 to 3. Assume that the cooling panel during non-adiabatic operation is operated using a solar cell module of 800 W/m{sup 2} in solar intensity and 15% in conversion efficiency. The cooling-surface temperature difference is 12.12 K, and the maximum absorbed value of a non-absorbing substance to a cooling panel is 39.12 W/m{sup 2}. The absorbed value of the outer temperature to the cooling panel is 74.4 W/m{sup 2}, and each performance coefficient is 3.26 and 0.62. The absorbed value must be calculated for evaluation from the cooling-surface temperature difference measured directly from the cooling panel. 4 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.

    A permanent borehole energy storage system utilizing solar energy and waste heat from coolers is simulated, to be used as an air conditioning system for super-tall buildings. A 100m-long pipe is buried vertically into the ground, and a heat medium is caused to circulate in the pipe for the exchange of heat with the soil. Thirty borehole units are used, each measuring 9m{times}9m (with the pipe pitch being 3m). Solar cells occupying half of the wall surface facing south and solar collectors installed on the roof supply electric power and heat for cooling and warming. Heat in the ground is transferred mainly by conduction but also is carried by water and gas in movement. So, an analysis is carried out using an equation in which heat and water move at the same time. Because waste heat from cooling and warming systems is accumulated in the ground and none is discharged into the air, big cities will be protected from warming (from developing heat islands). As compared with the conventional boiler-aided air conditioning system, a hybrid borehole system incorporating solar collectors and solar cells will bring about an 80% reduction in CO2 emission and annual energy consumption. 7 refs., 3 figs., 4 tabs.

    This paper describes a proposed method for suppressing light deterioration (temperature effect method), in which an annealing effect was always expected by laminating an NEM element and a heat insulation material on the back side of a-Si solar cell module and thereby raising the temperature in the back side of the module, and also describes an outdoor exposure test device completed for the method. The NEM element consisted of conductive potassium titanate and high molecular polymer and was a self temperature-controlling organic exothermic body that required no outside temperature control device. It was provided with a heat generating temperature of 45-75{degree}C as the exothermic property of the element and capable of generating heating temperature arbitrarily according to the purpose. The NEM element varied a resistance value against the ambient temperature and kept the element temperature constant. Measurement was commenced starting April 19, 1996, using the completed outdoor exposure test device and a measuring circuit. The deterioration phenomenon was and from then on continuously examined under the following conditions: (1) measurements were those of clear days only, and (2) measurements to be used were those between 10:00 and 14:00 with the quantity of solar radiation on a constant level. 4 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

    It is clarified that the photo-excitation hydrophilic reaction increasing wettability remarkably is induced by changing surface structure of titanium oxide radiated light. There are already many examples being in practical use of coating products applied hydrophilic reaction of titanium oxide surface such as drip-proof side millers for automobiles, self-cleaning building materials, and the like. When surface of titanium oxide having high activities for oxidisation and decomposition is coated organic materials and radiated light, wettability of surface changes as organic materials are decomposed. If it is possible to change wettability shaping pattern drastically by radiating light, the possibility of application for printing materials will be developed. After increasing contact angle by coating water and oil repellent on the titanium oxide thin film, images can be shaped by radiating light into pattern for changing surface of titanium oxide to be ultra hydrophilicity as decomposition of repellent. At that time, contact angle is 150 degree in water, 80 degree in oil, for not radiated aria, and is 0 degree in water and oil for radiated aria. Application for control technology of wettability keeps possibility of broader development to itself, not staying ability of self-cleaning and drip-proof. (NEDO)

    Single atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) aims at controlling a growing film at a precision of single molecular layer. In this article, it is reported that the growth temperature range of ALE was expanded by the vertical irradiation of KrF exima laser (248 nm) onto the substrate for the ALE growth of GaAs using the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) method. Thanks for the results of the above experiment, it was demonstrated that the irradiation effect was not thermal, but photochemical. In addition, this article studies the possibility of adsorption layer irradiation and surface irradiation as the photo-irradiation mechanism, and points out that coexistence of both irradiation mechanisms can be considered and, in case of exima laser, strong possibility of direct irradiation of the adsorption layer because of its high power density. Hereinafter, by using both optical growth ALE and thermal growth ALE jointly, the degree of freedom of combination of hetero ALE increases and its application to various material systems becomes possible. 16 refs., 6 figs.

    Cooperative researches by participation of 8 analytical laboratories such as Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University and Steel Research Center, NKK Corporation, etc. were conducted wherein the common samples of Au, Fe, Ni, Al and their oxides were measured by means of Auger electron spectra. By virtue of an elastic scattering peak apparatus and the standardization of the sample locations, peak energy values of Auger electron spectra obtained by the respective equipment are neutrally in good agreement. Auger profiles (peak intensity) considerably change according to the respective units and the measuring conditions. When the spectra are as sharp as in LMM, LMV and LVV of Fe, Ni and their oxides, and emerge, as in the case of LMM and LMV, in mutually close energy value, the difference in the ratio of spectrum intensity by the respective machines and measuring methods is small in metal oxides, but, in the case of LVV LMM, the state analysis can be made by its slight change. 10 refs., 9 figs., 1 tab.

    Efforts are focused on the verification of target devices under the respective subjects, and activities are conducted with the development system reinforced. Three newly proposed reflection type liquid crystal devices achieve the target specifications of a reflection factor of 60% or higher and a contrast ratio of 15:1 or higher. Studies are conducted involving the five fields of (1) multilayer reflection devices, (2) memory retention liquid crystal devices, (3) single pixel color devices, (4) directional reflection devices, and (5) joint research.     Aluminothermic reduction of Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5}-ZrO{sub 2} mixture and subsequent electron beam refining of Nb-Zr-Al alloys were reported. In 2 kg batch aluminothermic reduction tests, the Nb-Zr-Al alloys containing 1-10% Zr and 14-25% Al were obtained as the Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5}-ZrO{sub 2} mixture containing amounts of ZrO{sub 2} equivalent to 20-40% Zr was reduced by Al of 15-56% in excess of stoichiometric requirement. In electron beam refining tests, the Nb-Zr-Al alloys containing 0.1-8% Zr and 7-28% Al were used as specimens. The Al content in the Nb-Zr-Al alloy was easily reduced to 50 ppm or less by refining in a short time, and the Zr content was also evaporated decreasing its concentration. Even the Nb-l%Zr alloy could be produced by adjusting mixing conditions in aluminothermic reduction and beam conditions during refining. 6 refs., 6 figs., 6 tabs.

    This paper describes laser irradiation and velocity selective deposition experiments for fabricating high quality thin films. For the formation of Ag thin film by vacuum deposition method, YAG laser was irradiated to atoms or clusters parallel or perpendicular to the NaCl single crystal substrate, to deposit them on the substrate. For another experiment, Ag atoms selected in the given velocity were deposited on the (001) NaCl substrate by passing the molecular beam through the velocity selector. When laser was not irradiated, the thin film showed a random structure. Epitaxial growth was accelerated by the laser irradiation. When the selective velocity was set in 353 m/s at the constant intensity of molecular beam, the diffraction pattern of the thin film showed net pattern. When the selective velocity was set in 529 m/s, a structure in which ring pattern was overlapped on the net pattern was obtained. 2 figs.

    With an objective of realizing super large capacity recording technologies largely exceeding the current limits of optical recording and magnetic recording, studies were conducted on application of near-field optics. In the study on recording by using near-field light, it was verified that a mark with approximately the same size as an aperture diameter can be formed on a phase change recording film when a fiber probe with an aperture diameter of about 200 nm is used. However, it was found that the recording using this system takes excessive amount of time. When laser light collected on an objective lens was irradiated pulse-wise, a mark with a minimum width of about 20 nm was observed with high contrast. This will mean that a record with recording density of one terabit/in {sup 2} can be read out. Other studies performed include those on evaluation of effects of polarized light and surface shape on near-field read-out, simulation, mechanism of crystallization in a phase change recording film, recording and playback with ultra-high resolution by using a conformable near-field aperture, fabrication of a flat aperture type near-field light probe array, and the evaluation thereon. 22 refs., 27 figs.

    Astaxanthin (3,3[prime]-dihydroxy-[beta],[beta]-carotene-4,4[prime]-dione) is a red carotenoid dye present in aquatic organisms such as crustacea and fish, and has a close relationship with the manifestation of colors of the bodies and meat of these organisms. Astaxanthin is currently used as a color-enhancing agent for cultivated fish such as red sea bream, rainbow trout, and salmon. Recently, astaxanthin has been found to be a much stronger antioxidant than [beta]-carotene or [alpha]-tocophenol, and its application to foods and pharmaceuticals is expected. In this article, studies by the authors on Haematococcus pluvialis, one of the most promising microorganisms as a source of producing astaxanthin, are described as an example of production of useful carotenoids using minute algae, and are compared with Dunaliella, as a [beta]-carotene producing microorganism, which is already produced commercially. 1 fig., 1 tab.

    Electric science promotion prize (progress prize) is given to `Person who newly proposed a new concept, theory, material, device, system and method on electrical science and technology, or demonstrated these proposals` by the commendation committee of Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan every year. Eight promotion prizes including that for Kansai Electric Power`s `Demonstration of optical soliton transmission on OPGW first in the world` were given. This research succeeded in development of the transmission/ receiving device suitable for optical soliton transmission, and the prediction method of an optimum transmission condition by computer simulation. In addition, this research succeeded in 10Gbit transmission of 784km and 40Gbit transmission (4-wave multiplex) of 392km by applying the above research result to Okurobe trunk line OPGW (98.2km).     A drowsiness warning system that measures blinks utilizing image processing technology has a number of issues that need to be resolved. One issue is the adaptability of the system to changes in the ambient light environment in the actual vehicle interior. We have devised image processing software which is robust to changes in the ambient light. The drowsiness detection performance of the system was evaluated in laboratory tests and actual driving tests. It was found that the system can has a positive effect on detecting drowsiness level. 3 refs., 10 figs.

    This R and D program is aimed at securing interoperability between optical disk systems, based on the logical formats, to propose the draft international standards. For the volume/file structures proposed by ISO/IEC 13346, the universal disk format (UDF) proposed by the Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA) is taken as the target file system, to improve the conformance test environments and develop the standards for advanced interoperability. The 1998 R and D themes include development of the UDF conformance testing tools for avoiding the interoperability-related problems involved in the UDF, which are actually observed, and investigations on the UAF specifications and preparation of the UAF-related standard evaluation systems for preparation of the draft standards for the Universal Accessible Filesystem (UAF), planned to be conducted in and after the next fiscal year, which allows, e.g., network seamless application of a variety of the future optical disks.     Pursuant to the measuring of temperature dependency of the characteristics such as conversion efficiency, during the process of degradation in a-Si solar cells due to light and electric current and the process of recovery by annealing, this paper describes changes in temperature coefficients, correlation between the characteristic parameters and the degradation, and the results of the examination of their characteristics. The conversion efficiency {mu} degraded approximately by 45% of the initial value each by the irradiation under a light intensity with 3 SUN accelerated and by the infusion of current at 20mA/cm{sup 2}; and then, the efficiency recovered to 70-75% of the degradation by subsequent annealing. In addition, in the temperature dependency at 80{degree}C against at 20{degree}C, Isc slightly increased while Vcc greatly decreased. This slight increase in Isc was mainly due to the decrease in the width of the forbidden band, while the decrease in Vcc was due to the increase in the reverse saturation current. The temperature dependency of {mu}N was negative, becoming small in accordance with the degradation. The temperature dependency of FF/FFO was negative initially both in light and current, but it decreased with the degradation and turned to positive. The temperature coefficients of I-V parameters reversibly changed corresponding to the degradation and recovery of these parameters and stayed in a good correlation. 7 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.

    With the purpose of converting solar heat energy to an industrial heat energy, an examination was carried out empirically on the case of using a heteropoly-acid photo catalyst for the decomposition reaction process of 2-propanol. The experiment was performed in Florida Solar Energy Center, in the U.S.A.. The device for the experiment was constituted of a reaction part, distribution manifold for feeding from the lower part of the reaction part a 2-propanol solution for which a photo catalyst was suspended, storage tank served also as a gas-liquid separating container, and circulating pump. Silica-tangstic acid was used as the photo catalyst. In an outdoor experiment using solar radiation, the quantity of inclined global solar radiation was 530-950W/m{sup 2} in clear days and 100-600W/m{sup 2} in cloudy days, with temperatures between 17 and 26{degree}C throughout the experiment period. In addition, an indoor experiment was also conducted using an artificial light source (UV light). As a result of the experiment, the energy conversion efficiency was at most about 1% of incident UV light, a low figure compared to a heat utilization ratio of approximately 15% with a thermal catalyst. 6 refs., 8 figs.

    R and D was conducted with the purpose of establishing fundamental technologies concerning photo-reactive materials, which control molecular structures or polymerization through light beam behavior and which can be used for ultra-high density optical recording, high resolution display, optical switch, etc., with the fiscal 1992 results summarized. In the studies on photochromic materials, investigation was carried out on the possibility of 10 multiple recording and the fundamental features of aggregate forming photochromic compounds. In the studies on high temperature of photochemical hole burning (PHB) materials, a material was synthesized using ionic porphyrin derivatives as guest material and deuterated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and the like as host, with the evaluation made on the performance of multiple hole formation and storage. In addition, comparisons were made for example on the thermal properties of the PHB materials among the participating enterprises mutually. In the development of chinone PHB materials and research on the improvement of the multiplicity, as this being the final year, researches were done on such subjects as integration of element technologies, material evaluation technology and PHB-related studies, correlatively as the work of the final year.     This project promotes the fundamental research on the conventional OCT technology to make it applicable to wider clinical applications of diagnoses and therapies by greatly improving the technology in view of higher spatial resolution, smaller size, and functional diversification. The research is supported by the medical and engineering cooperative research that utilizes the medical and engineering knowledge. Furthermore, as the fundamental technologies for the next generation, the sectional image measuring technology is established that makes possible to measure the three-dimensional flow and movement such as blood flow distribution in very small blood vessels, and performs the basic research on high-speed sectional image measurement to measure moving images of sectional images. The research contents for the current fiscal year may be summarized as follows: in the research on a small integrated optical element to make diagnostic application possible for skin cancers, retinal detachment, and cataract, research on trial production of a small OCT has been performed, and research on high spatial resolution has been implemented; furthermore, research was carried out on an endoscope integrated type OCT system intended of textural diagnoses of gastric cancer, hemorrhoidal cancer, and colic cancer, and on a sectional image measuring system intended of extracting biochemical information, and on a high-precision absorptive spectrum measuring technology for biogenic structures.     To establish the pressure dependence of silent discharge excited rare gas excimer light emission, a vacua ultraviolet light was subjected to spectroscopic analysis at a pressure lower than 20kPa. Researches are under way to apply the discharge excited rare gas excimer lamp as a vacuum ultraviolet light source for the development of new materials and for the conservation of environments. When the pressure is as low as 1.8kPa or 4.4kPa, the emission has peaks at wavelengths centering on 147nm and 149nm, both of which are the resonance lines of the xenon atom. Excimer generation becomes prominent as the pressure increases, with the second continuum of light growing dominant at 35kPa to weaken relatively the resonance lines and the first continuum of light. In the first continuum, emission increases only at a suppressed rate, as compared with emission in the second continuum, due for instance to a collision caused relaxation process in which excimers are lost. In the case of xenon in the vicinity of 10-11kPa, the first continuum of light and the second continuum of light are approximately equal in emission intensity, producing a vacuum ultraviolet light source with a bandwidth relatively large for a single gas spectrum. 14 refs., 11 figs.

    The unique advantage of the pulsed laser deposition is its ability to produce highly oriented stoichiometric films at a low substrate temperature. Ferroelectric PbTiO3 thin films have been formed using 2nd laser assisted laser ablaion technique at low temperature, i.e., 350degC, on Sr7iO3 single-crystal substrates and Pt/MgO electrodes. The second laser irradiation at the substrate surface is quite effective for crystallization of the films at low substrate temperature below 400degC. The suitable energy density (fluence) of the irradiation laser is in the range of 30-100 mJ/cm{sup 2}. X-ray diffraction patterns of PbTiO3 thin films show c-axis orientation, with a rocking angle of 1.0 - 0.5deg. These films exhibit ferroelectric hysteresis loop. The dielectric constant and remanent polalyzation of the PbTiO3 films are in the range of 120-150 and 60-80 {mu}C/cm{sup 2}, respectively. 31 refs., 10 figs., 1 tab.

    Research was made on improvement of the wettability and boiling heat transfer characteristics of a photocatalyst wall. Measurement experiment of the wettability was made for anatase type titan oxide-coated Al, SUS and Pb plates, rutil type titan oxide-flame coated SUS plate, raw plate, and oxide-plasma coated titan plate. In the ground experiment, the contact angles of distilled water and oil on specimen surfaces were measured. In the microgravity experiment, falling droplet images were recorded by using the facility of Japan Microgravity Center (JAMIC). For obtaining the effect of radioactive emission, UV irradiation, {gamma} ray and neutron beam irradiation by nuclear reactor, and {gamma} ray irradiation by Co-60 were carried out. As the experiment result, the rutil type titan oxide-flame coated SUS plate, nonconductor-coated titan plate, and zircaloy plate showed large improvement of the wettability by {gamma} ray irradiation with Co-60. It was also confirmed that in particular, titan shows the large effect of radioactive emission, and the wettability deteriorates rapidly after {gamma} ray irradiation. (NEDO)

    The titled {mu}-oxo-metal(III) phthalocyanine dimers were prepared and investigated their polymorphs through X-ray diffraction analysis. It was found that {mu}-oxo-aluminum phthalocyanine dimer and {mu}-oxo-gallium phthalocyanine dimer have several polymorphs, but one of the target compounds, that is {mu}-oxo-indium phthalocyanine dimer, could not be synthesized because chloroindium phthalocyanine was easily hydrolyzed through acid-pasting treatment procedure to give metal-free phthalocyanine. The characterization of these compounds by the several chemical analytical methods was satisfied for the target molecules and the FD-Mass analysis distinguished clearly between the hydroxymetal phthalocyanine and the corresponding phthalocyanine dimer. We also studied their photoconductive properties on the bilayer photoreceptor consisted of the above phthalocyanine dimer as the charge generating material. It was found that the specific polymorphs of {mu}-oxo-metal(III) phthalocyanine dimers have good photoconductive properties: the APL-II(the II type of {mu}-oxo-Al(III) phthalocyanine dimer discussed in this article) has a good spectral response of the photosensitivity in the shorter wavelength, and the GPL-G (the G type of {mu}-oxo-Ga(III) phthalocyanine dimer discussed in this article) has a fairly high photosensitivity in the wavelength region of laser diode light wavelength, compared with the common phthalocyanine photoreceptors. 14 refs., 9 figs., 3 tabs.

    This report summarizes 'Research cooperation on the easy-to- operate electronic design/production support system' which was promoted together with Asian countries as a part of the international research projects. This project is promoted by joint research with research organizations in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The project promotes the interexchange and cooperation of researchers along the memoranda on MATIC (Manufacturing Technology International Cooperation) concluded between NEDO and research organizations every country. The project is implemented by CICC (Center of the International Cooperation for Computerization) through the contract with NEDO. CICC is promoting this project with the production system future integrated information system committee, MATIC committee, and automobile, home appliance, fiber and apparel working groups. The project has been promoted by the survey in fiscal 1994, the basic planning in fiscal 1995-1996, and development of the prototype information system in fiscal 1996-1998. The history of realization in the rotary machines reaches about 110 years. The development of recent technique containing driving technique is miracle. There is a variable speed pumped-storage power system developed and realized by Japan faster than in the world. In the field of the railway, speed-up in the Shinkansen line and the ordinary railway line, power saving, cost reduction, improved convenience, and so forth were intended. In the field of the road traffic, car navigation brought an extreme spread as well as cost reduction. For a typical example of control technique in industry, there is a technique of motion control.     For understanding of fundamental chemical reactions under a highly non equilibrium condition which is quite often used in plasma processing, the relevant atomic and molecular processes must be clarified. In this study, an analysis of the transition process to the excited state of an oxygen molecule induced by electron collisions in the oxygen plasma has been carried out. First, the electron density distribution in an oxygen molecule has been calculated using the extended Huckel molecular orbital method. Then, the electron potential energy distribution in the transition process to the excited state has been estimated. The electron behavior has been calculated using the estimated unidimensional electron potential energy distribution and unsteady quantum mechanics. As a result, the transition process to the excited state of an oxygen molecule induced by electron collisions and its conditions have been clarified qualitatively. 9 refs., 9 figs.

    The rare gas discharge gives a stable discharge and light emission characteristics at low temperature in comparison with the discharge of the vapor of such a metal as Hg. The present barrier for the commercialization of the color PDP lies in the lower level of its emission intensity and efficiency in comparison with that of CRT. In this report, an electron impact ionization coefficient in a gas mixture and an electron impact excitation coefficient for a XeIs {sub 4} level were analyzed using a Boltzmann equation by means of a steady state Townsend method using a drift tube. By comparing both, the elementary process in the gas mixture is investiagted to discuss the respective contributions for the effective ionization coefficient and the excitation coefficient. As a result, it was found that the ionization process in the He-Xe gas mixture could be described by the processes of direct ionization of Xe and He, and an indirect ionization (Penning effect) by an active helium. 37 refs., 12 figs.

    Experiments on the amplification of a picosecond pulse by electron-beam pumped KrF laser amplifiers were carried out for the purpose of its application to the field such as excitation light source for soft X-ray laser which requires large energy besides peak power. The picosecond pulse was amplified by a discharge pumped KrF amplifier and two electron-beam pumped KrF amplifiers(at the middle stage and the final stage). The energy of 4J, which was the largest energy for short pulse excimer laser so far, was obtained by these devices. About 90% of the window area of the final amplifier with 29cm diameter was filled by the input beam, and energy density of the picosecond beam reached 3.9 times saturation energy density. Measured energy of amplified spontaneous emission(ASE) showed good agreement with the theoretically estimated value. Most of ASE was derived from the discharge pumped laser as the first amplifier. As for the focused power density, the power density ratio of the picosecond pulse to ASE was estimated to be as large as 10{sup 5}. 11 refs., 4 figs.

    Slow positron beam with less than several eV can be controlled freely such as accelerating, throttling the beam size, shortening the pulse or making pulse with short time width and so forth. These low positron beams are applied to various measurements like Doppler broadening measurement of annihilation {gamma} rays or lifetime measurement of positron, and secondary particle measurements using positron microscope, positron electron ray diffraction, flight time method and so forth. In particular, these recent years, high intensity slow positron beams were possible using accelerators like electron linac and its application is increasing. In this report, pulse shortening method for high intensity slow positron beam, and incidence energy variable positron lifetime measurement method using this slow pulsed beam and flight time type positron-annihilation-induced auger electron spectroscopy are outlined. In future, these measurements can be possible to carry out with high resolution and also with high counting rate if higher intensity monochromatic excellent positron beam than present one is produced. 31 refs., 5 figs.

    An oxygen sensor with a built-in oxygen concentration cell using solid zirconia electrolyte can measure oxygen activity by immersing it in molten steel for ten and some seconds. For measuring oxygen in molten steel, the value of partial electronic conduction parameter of solid electrolyte is important. So far the swinkels method using the polarization electromotive force has been used for measurement, but it has several problematical points. In this research, in order to solve them, a new measuring method of electroconductive parameters of solid electrolyte by the AC two terminal method was designed and measurement was done on various zirconia based solid electrolytes. It was clarified that this method has the following features: The measured values by this method agree with those by the swinkels method which had so far been the sole measuring method. The sufficient size of the electrolyte for the measurement is 2mm in diameter and 10mm in length or more, and in comparison with the swinkels method, a fairly small specimen can be meamsured. There is no restriction on the shape of electrolyte and this method does not dirty solid electrolyte. Its measuring time is shorter than the swinkels method. 17 refs., 13 figs., 2 tabs.

    To support the advancement of basic industries including machine industry in Asian countries, research cooperation has been conducted for developing the manufacturing technology supported by advanced and integrated information system suitable for actual circumstances of individual countries. For the automotive and the parts industries, it is significant for the preparation works of manufacturing in overseas factories to possess common information between Japan and overseas factories. In this project, a system is constructed, which can be used in industries surrounding automotive industry, such as parts and facility industries, as well as in the automotive industry. In FY 1996, a primary system has been developed, and the demonstration tests were carried out. For the home electric machine and the parts industries, the technology applicable to the design of printed board circuit was developed, and the catalog of electronic parts was constructed. In FY 1996, a preliminary prototype system of the electronic parts catalog system was designed and developed.     To compare the efficacy and safety of certolizumab pegol (CZP) with and without loading dose (LD) in a post-hoc analysis of two Japanese clinical studies. Data from the double-blind trials (DBT) J-RAPID and HIKARI, and their open-label extension (OLE) studies, were used. Patients randomized to CZP 200 mg every 2 weeks (Q2W) groups starting with LD (400 mg Weeks 0/2/4; LD group; J-RAPID: n = 82, HIKARI: n = 116) and patients randomized to placebo groups who subsequently started CZP Q2W without LD in the OLEs (No-LD group; J-RAPID: n = 61, HIKARI: n = 99) were analyzed. Efficacy and pharmacokinetics were assessed during 24 weeks. Adverse events were reported from all studies. In both trials, the LD groups showed more rapid initial ACR20/50/70 kinetics, and maintained higher ACR50/70 responses until 24 weeks, compared with the No-LD groups. Anti-CZP antibody development was less frequent in the LD groups (J-RAPID: 1.2% versus 4.9%; HIKARI: 17.2% versus 27.3%). Similar safety profiles were reported between LD and No-LD groups (any AEs: 281.8 versus 315.7 [J-RAPID], 282.6 versus 321.3 [HIKARI] [incidence rate/100 patient-years]). Despite limitations, including comparing DBT and OLE studies, these results suggest that a CZP LD improves clinical response in active rheumatoid arthritis without altering the safety profile.

    A research was conducted with the aim of developing an ultra-low power consuming type information display which supports the next next generation informatizing society. As to the function combined type fine structure formation technology, a formation technology of fine structure supporting multi-layer pixel by organic polymer materials was established to confirm a possibility of adopting it to high functional liquid crystal display. Concerning the high functional fine structure formation technology, a study was proceeded with on holographic PDLC which is an interference reflection coloring method. In relation to the low temperature film formation technology of ferroelectric thin films, a film formation device was introduced to obtain basic data, and at the same time a possibility was studied of improving film characteristics by laser annealing conducted after the film formation.     The R and D were conducted on the standardization for interoperability of optical disk system, and the FY 1999 results were summarized. In the study, for the volume/file structure specified by ISO/IEC 13346, the development of standards was made for interoperation of the UDF specified by OSTA. In this fiscal year, to avoid the problem on non-interchangeability of UDF which actually exists, enhancement of functions of a test tool for UDF interchangeability was tried. Namely, development was carried out of UDF interchangeability test tool, UAF related standards, and UAF related standards assessment system. Especially, it was formally announced that UDF security enhancement of UAF related standards will be included in UDF2.x in the OSTA conference held at the end of FY 1999.     This research and development project is aimed at activation of the urushi industry and creation of the new business by utilizing the natural material by the name of urushi solution as the functional coating material satisfying the various conditions required for the coating solutions of the next generation, e.g., healthy, safety, comfortable and environmentally harmless characteristics. The urushi solution developed by this project is an innovative, creative one, which solves the major problems involved in the conventional solution, i.e., slow curing and causing eruption of the skin, by enzyme-aided polymerization and photopolymerization. The physiological activities of the urushi solution component and antimicrobial effects by the urushi layer, which are considered to be the potential functions of urushi, are also investigated for the project. The urushi-containing UV coating material means an ultraviolet-curable urushi/synthetic resin material, composed of refined urushi, a photopolymerizable acrylate compound and photopolymerization initiator. The refined urushi for the urushi-containing UV coating material can be adjusted for its degree of polymerization, as found by the experimental investigation of the catalyst for accelerating enzyme-aided polymerization, to improve curability. The confirmed physiological activities of the urushi component are accelerated solidification of the blood and manifestation of the anti-HIV function. The coating film of the refined urushi is found to be effective against Bacillus coli and Staphylococcus aureus. (NEDO)

    Research, development and evaluation were performed with an objective of establishing the basic technology related to light-reactive materials that control the structures and status of aggregation of molecules by using actions of light, and can be used for ultra-high density recording, high resolution indication and light switches. In elucidating the mechanism of light deterioration reaction of photochromic molecules, it was disclosed that 6-nitrospirobenzopyran has the light deterioration caused from the excitation triplet state. This disclosure presents a possibility of preventing the light deterioration. New derivatives that show photochromism were synthesized, and thin films were produced by using the LB process. This indicates a possibility of producing the photochromic materials as the high multiplex recording material. With regard to PHB materials, an evaluation technology having spectrum resolution of the world's highest level was established and measurements were performed. Hole formation was verified for the first time in the world at the temperature higher than the liquid nitrogen temperature by using a PHB material of ionic porphin/polyvinyl alcohol systems. This verification indicates a feasibility of practically usable PHB materials. (NEDO)

    Noting on the Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} aluminothermic reduction (ATR) regarded as an efficient method of refining Nb, a small ATR experiment was carried out on mixed oxide of Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} and Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5}/ZnO{sub 2}. A good separation of metal from slag was obtained by means of performing an ATR with the method of heating the entire reaction system or compensating the heat by adding KC10{sub 3} into the material. The Al, Zr and oxygen concentrations in the metal obtained from an ATR method are related with each other. To raise the Zr concentration in the metal, the Al concentration in the metal must be raised. It was found in the ATR of the Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5}/ZrO{sub 2} mixed oxide that the Zr concentration in the metal can be increased by increasing the excess Al and raising the ZrO{sub 2} mix. It was revealed from the above result that the ATR of mixed oxide of Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5}/ZrO{sub 2} can manufacture Nb-Zr containing Zr at more than 1%. 13 refs., 7 figs., 6 tabs.

    We already found and reported that the specific polymorphs of {mu}-oxo-aluminum phthalocyanine dimer and {mu}-oxo-gallium phthalocyanine dimer have fairly good characteristics as the electrophotographic receptor. In connection with our ongoing works on this field, we are interested in the synthesis of {mu}-oxo-bridged dimers of diverse metal phthalocyanines for persuing various charge generating materials in electrophotographic receptors. We report here the results of studies on the polymorphs of the titled phthalocyanine dimer, i.e. {mu}-oxo-bridged between aluminum and gallium phthalocyanine dimer, and their primary electrophotographic evaluation.     The efforts aim to develop a CVD (chemical vapor deposition) mechanism cleaning gas with less environmental impact such as global warming and a CVD process using the same. The candidate gas synthesizing study for the development of such a gas continues from the preceding fiscal year. In addition, various candidate gases and tentatively synthesized gases are evaluated for their cleaning performance using a simplified experimental system. As the result, patent applications were filed for three novel alternative gases low in environmental impact and high in cleaning performance. In the research and development of CVD processes, a verification test process is developed for the evaluation of alternative gases at the real system level using a large CVD evaluation system. Studies are also made in which some existing gases are utilized to improve on CVD cleaning efficiency and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In relation to the process, one domestic patent application is made, and three essays are presented at an international conference on electrochemistry in the United States. (NEDO)

    This paper indicates that the relationship between toxicity and biological activity of environmental hormones such as dioxin and their chemical structures may be predicted by using parameters (physical quantity) derived from the chemical hardness conception. According to this conception, softness and hardness of molecules are important in addition to electron receptivity and donation properties of molecules. Soft compounds facilitate electrons to migrate. Chlorine displacement of dioxin skeleton to 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 8th orders softens the molecules and displacement to 1st, 4th, 6th and 9th orders hardens them. The toxicity and biological activity of the environmental hormones cannot be explained only with the fit model of key-keyhole with the counterpart they act on (receptor). The softer the chemical hardness, the greater the toxicity and biological activity. Development has been made on an absolute hardness versus absolute electrical negative activity diagram to learn electron structure of molecules. This diagram indicates that the toxicity of dioxin depends more strongly on the chemical hardness than the strength of the electrical negativity, and the softer the hardness, the stronger the toxicity.     For selection of future technological themes and developmental techniques, survey was made on the history of development of electrical and electronic engineering and industry in Japan. The Technical Committee for History of Electrical Engineering of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan has diffused various activities on the history research into a society since establishment in April, 1990. Hearing survey which is extremely important for technology succession has been carried out continuously since 1991 for 3 honorary members of this institute who are pioneers of electrical and electronic engineering innovation in Japan. Importance of creative innovative technology development is increasing more and more, and `finding a guide into tomorrow by taking lessons from the past` is one of techniques for technology development. Publication and opening on Internet of the hearing survey results are under consideration as public service. Preparation of the database of the hearing results is also necessary for promotion of these activities. 17 refs.

    This paper reports the research and development project for an electronics design and production aid system of simple operation type. The project (MATIC) has been executed to support works of Asian countries on the information society, and enhance levels of the manufacturing industries and supportive industries by utilizing the information technologies. Fiscal 1997 has entered full-fledged demonstration experiments, and decided the project directionality as a result of different committee activities as to policies, contents and promotion methods for research, development and demonstration experiments. The working group (WG) 1, composed of members having professional knowledge on automobiles and components thereof, has deliberated specific research and development items, promotion of the research and development, technical problems, promotion of joint researches with overseas countries. The WG II, composed of members having professional knowledge on household electric appliances and their parts, discussed promotion of research and development of household electric appliances and their parts. The WG III, composed of textile and apparel expertise members, made attempts in promoting the research and development of household electrid appliances and their parts.     Asian countries are constructing information infrastructures actively in spite of severe financial and economic conditions in every country. For promoting advanced manufacturing industries and supporting industries of Asian countries by information technology, the research cooperation promotion project (MATIC) on the electronic design and production support system has been carried out as the joint research project of Japan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. This project started as the 5-year project in 1994, and has developed and demonstrated the prototype electronic design and production support system in 3 fields of automobile, home appliance and fiber/apparel. In the final 1998, the R and D and demonstration test were carried out, and the project results were summarized. For discussing the research cooperation concretely with overseas countries, the overseas researchers were invited to Japan for explaining the research state in Japan, confirming the promotion states of each country, and discussing the research report, while Japanese researchers visited the concerned organizations in every country.     Efforts are made to develop technologies for saving PFC (perfluoro-compound) and conserving energy in semiconductor manufacturing processes, in particular, in the layer insulation film (SiO{sub 2}) dry etching process. Activities are conducted in the five fields of (1) research and development of technologies for reducing the amount of etching gas consumption, (2) development of a dry etching technology using alternative gas, (3) development of a dry etching technology using a low dielectric constant layer insulation film, (4) research and development of novel wiring structures and a method for fabricating the same, and (5) re-entrusted studies. Conducted in field (5) are studies of novel alternative gas - solid sources to substitute PFC, theory design technologies for low dielectric constant organic macromolecules, low dielectric constant material film fabrication by CVD (chemical vapor deposition), and technology for optical wiring inside chips. In field (2), studies are conducted of low GWP (global warming potential) alternative PFC gas aided etching and decomposition prevention technologies for reduction in PFC emissions, and it is made clear that C{sub 4}F{sub 6} performs excellently as an etchant.     In a discharge excitation rare gas halide excima laser, uniform generation and stable maintenance of the excited discharge determines the laser characteristics. In this report, an approximate solution was obtained on the Boltzmann equation (frequently used for the theoretical analysis of this laser) to examine the nature of the solution. By optimizing the conversion of the variables, calculation of an electron swarm parameter in the hitherto uncertain range of the low conversion electric field was made possible, giving a generation mechanism of the uncertainty of the excited dischareg. The results are summarized as below. (1) The Boltzmann equation gives a linear solution for a logarithmic value of an electron energy in the range of low conversion electric field. (2) Time-wise responce ability between the measured voltage, current characteristics of the excitation discharge was clarified and the attachment and ionization coefficients calculated by Boltzmann equation. (3) Dependency of the attachment coefficient on the partial pressure of fluorine and kripton was examined, and the attachment coefficient was found to increase with the increase of the partial pressure for the both cases. 20 refs., 9 figs., 2 tabs.

    In order to clarify the innovation process of industrial technologies in Japan and the originality and creativity seen in that process to serve for the future development, hearing surveys have been performed. The persons being the hearing objects are Mr. Koichi Oshima who has researched the series capacitors for power transmission cables, Mr. Makoto Osatake who has researched the distortion in frequency modulation, and Mr. Hisao Oka who has researched the destruction phenomena in rectifier elements of power semiconductors. Mr. Hiroshi Inose and Mr. Toichiro Koike who have accepted the hearing survey were represented by the mourning statements due to their sudden death. The items of the questions in the hearing survey included: their home background, why have they studied electricity area specially?, determination criteria when they were forced to make a serious selection and the results thereof, examples of successes and failures and the age background, breakthrough points in the success cases, what they want to convey to future generations from their achievements, what they wished if they have done, methods of conveying the technologies, persons whom they respect as their teachers, existence of persons who have given them protection, sources of passion and motivation that supported the research life, and the principles toward the research.     This report describes Japan's joint researches with China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand under the above-named project (MATIC) which were carried out in fiscal 1997. Scientists are invited to Japan from the above-named countries, to whom Japan's status of researches is explained and with whom discussion is conducted about progress in general and system development in those countries, and about verification tests. Japanese scientists visit research institutes of those countries so as to appraise the progress of researches and technological levels and to install computers for verification tests. Scientists visiting this country upon Japan's invitation and workshop held in Japan are enumerated below. Accepted by Working Group I (automobile and parts) are scientists from Indonesia and China and workshops from two countries; accepted by Working Group II (electrical home appliance) are scientists from Malaysia and workshops from five countries and then from four countries; and accepted by Working Group III (fiber and apparel) are scientists from China.     Reported herein are the joint research results of the project (manufacturing technology supported by advanced and integrated information system through international cooperation (MATIC)), implemented in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand by Center of International Cooperation for Computerization, commissioned by NEDO. Japan invited researchers from each country to explain the research themes, and discussed construction of the systems in each country. Japanese experts visited the research institutes and cooperative works in these countries, to discuss the research cooperation themes, and survey the conditions and technical levels of these research institutes, and information infrastructures.     This paper reports the committee activities in fiscal 1995 on research cooperation for developing an electronics design and production aid system of simple operation type (MATIC). This fiscal year has decided the directionality of MATIC promotion by activities carried out by the different committees. These activities relate to research and development themes, the basic policies of the research and development along with the themes, research and development themes linked with overseas countries, and promotion methods.     The subject project is implemented in the fields of automobiles and their parts, electrical home appliances and their parts, and textile and apparel. In the field of automobiles and their parts, a prototype is developed of an integrated information management system which is to serve between corporation head offices and assembling businesses overseas, and another prototype is developed of an inter-business technical data serving system which is to serve between overseas assembling businesses and supporting businesses, both involving Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand. In the field of electrical home appliances and their parts, a prototype is developed of an electronic catalog system in a joint endeavor with research institutes of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, and a demonstration test is conducted. A design concurrent engineering system is developed by Japan and Malaysian research institutes. In the field of textile and apparel, prototypes are developed, by Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian apparel manufactures, of an apparel manufacturing specification system, international EDI (electronic data interchange) system, translation system, and a CAD (computer-aided design)/CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) data interchange system.     This paper summarizes the development of intelligent micro instruments (IMI) inaugurated in fiscal 1998 as the wide-area consortium project for the Tama area. Research and development will be carried out on the following items: IMI substrate elements utilizing micro machining technology, applicable to micro sensors and micro probes, semiconductor process sensors, electronic device measuring probes, signal processing and communication circuits for wireless sensing. This paper describes the achievements during fiscal 1998. Technologies were transferred from the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory of the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology on silicon micro machining and PZT piezoelectric thin film formation. An IMI research laboratory was installed at the Tokyo Metropolitan University. In developing the IMI substrate elements, different beams applicable to sensors and probes were fabricated on a trial basis, and their mechanical properties were measured. For the semiconductor process sensors, discussions were given on micronization on a chlorine ion analyzer. In developing the electronic device measuring probes, the target was placed on measurement of in-situ characteristics of IC chips on a wafer. A prototype transmitting and receiving circuit board was fabricated for developing the wireless sensing. (NEDO)

    The development of manufacturing technology was proceeded with for a high speed nitriding system using electron beam excited plasma device which realizes high dissociation for nitrogen molecules and controls the plasma state. By the device, the following are aimed at: high quality/high speed nitriding, formation of super-hard cubic system boron nitride (c-BN) and carbon nitride (CN) films on the surface of tools, and formation of TiO{sub 2} thin films with high infrared reflectance and environmental purification photocatalyst function. TiO{sub 2} thin films are assumed to be applied to window glass by making use of the high performance heat mirror function as well as the environmental purification function. Studies were made in the following 6 fields: 1)development of small electron beam excitation plasma source; 2) development of high speed nitrided container; 3) establishment of technology for real-time monitoring of radicals and ions; 4) design/trial manufacture of a device to form super-hard nitrided thin films; 5) development of heat mirror film formation device; 6) establishment of a method to evaluate effects of photocatalyst.     Full Text Available O presente trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de identificar genótipos de feijão-caupi (Vigna unguiculata (L Walp., tolerantes à acidez. O trabalho foi realizado em casa de vegetação localizada no Campus do Cauamé, da Universidade Federal de Roraima, utilizando um Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo de Boa Vista-RR. Foi adotado o delineamento experimental de Blocos Inteiramente Casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 x 5 x 10 com três repetições. Os tratamentos resultaram de duas formas de localização do calcário (localizada e não-localizada, 5 profundidades (0-5; 5-10; 10-15; 15-20; 20-25 cm e 10 genótipos de feijão-caupi(IT85D-3428-4-R2,4-HM; Apiaú; Hikari Graúdo; Pretinho Precoce 1; IT85D-3428-4-3-HP; USA; UFRR Grão Verde; BRS-Mazagão; Canapum e Sempre Verde. A unidade experimental foi constituída por 2dm3 de solo, dispostos em tubo de PVC com 25cm de altura,10cm de diâmetro e duas plantas de feijão. Os tubos foram confeccionados por meio da junção de 5 anéis com 5 cm cada, sendo que no anel inferior foi colocada uma placa delgada de isopor para permitir a acomodação do solo. Aos 40 dias após a emergência, as plantas foram coletadas, sendo determinada à produção de matéria seca das raízes e parte aérea.   15. Musical and poetic creativity and epilepsy.

    Associations between epilepsy and musical or poetic composition have received little attention. We reviewed the literature on links between poetic and musical skills and epilepsy, limiting this to the Western canon. While several composers were said to have had epilepsy, John Hughes concluded that none of the major classical composers thought to have had epilepsy actually had it. The only composer with epilepsy that we could find was the contemporary composer, Hikari Oe, who has autism and developed epilepsy at age 15years. In his childhood years, his mother found that he had an ability to identify bird sound and keys of songs and began teaching him piano. Hikari is able to compose in his head when his seizures are not severe, but when his seizures worsen, his creativity is lost. Music critics have commented on the simplicity of his musical composition and its monotonous sound. Our failure to find evidence of musical composers with epilepsy finds parallels with poetry where there are virtually no established poets with epilepsy. Those with seizures include Lord George Byron in the setting of terminal illness, Algernon Swinburne who had alcohol-related seizures, Charles Lloyd who had seizures and psychosis, Edward Lear who had childhood onset seizures, and Vachel Lindsay. The possibility that Emily Dickinson had epilepsy is also discussed. It has not been possible to identify great talents with epilepsy who excel in poetic or musical composition. There are few published poets with epilepsy and no great composers. Why is this? Similarities between music and poetry include meter, tone, stress, rhythm, and form, and much poetry is sung with music. It is likely that great musical and poetic compositions demand a greater degree of concentration and memory than is possible in epilepsy, resulting in problems retaining a musical and mathematical structure over time.   19. Feasibility of a wireless gamma probe in radioguided surgery

    Radioguided surgery through the use of a gamma probe is an established practice, and has been widely applied in the case of sentinel lymph node biopsies. A wide range of intraoperative gamma probes is commercially available. The primary characteristics of the gamma probes include their sensitivity, spatial resolution, and energy resolution. We present the results obtained from a prototype of a new wireless gamma probe. This prototype is composed of a 20 mm thick cerium-doped gadolinium aluminum gallium garnet (Ce:GAGG) inorganic scintillation crystal from Furukawa Denshi and a Hamamatsu S12572-100C multi-pixel photon counter equipped with a designed electronics. The measured performance characteristics include the energy resolution, energy linearity, angular aperture, spatial resolution and sensitivity. Measurements were carried out using 57Co, 133Ba, 22Na, and 137Cs sources. The energy resolutions for 0.122 and 0.511 MeV were 17.2% and 6.9%, respectively. The designed prototype consumes an energy of approximately 4.4 W, weighs about 310 g (including battery) having a dimension of 20 mm (D)  ×  130 mm (L).

  20. Reduced Port Thoracoscopic Surgery for Mediastinal and Pleural Disease: Experiences in a Single Institution.

    The purpose of this study was to present our current experience with reduced port thoracoscopic surgery (RPTS) for the treatment of mediastinal and pleural disease and thereafter discuss its indications and technical challenges. A total of 11 patients underwent surgery by the RPTS approach for the following conditions: thymoma (n = 2), bronchogenic cyst (n = 2), metastatic pleural tumor, thymic cyst, solitary fibrous tumor, pulmonary sequestration, pericardial cyst, neurinoma, and malignant lymphoma (n = 1). An Endo Relief forceps (Hope Denshi Co, Ltd, Chiba, Japan) was used for three of the surgical procedures. The elements of the data set consisted of gender, age, duration of operation, drain placement, hospital stay, mass location, and mass size. The median surgical time was 45 min (range, 40-78 min). There were no intraoperative complications and no need for a second surgery to open additional ports. The duration until chest tube removal was 1 day for all the cases. The median hospital stay was 4 days (range, 3-6 days). The median mass size was 2.2 cm (range, 1.2-4.2 cm). The median length of skin incision was 2.0 cm (range, 2.0-3.5 cm). In conclusion, RPTS for mediastinal and pleural disease may be a possible alternative approach to conventional multiportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Although it is technically plausible and feasible for selected cases, the issues of patient acceptability and cosmetic and oncological results remain to be determined in the future with randomized-controlled trials and long-term follow-up.

    Full Text Available Effect of prediabetes and normal glucose on arterial stiffness remains controversial. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of fasting plasma glucose (FPG, postprandial glucose (PG and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c with brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV and cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI in Caucasian adults. The secondary aim was to analyse this relationship by glycaemic status.Cross-sectional study. Setting: Primary care. Participants: 2,233 subjects, 35-74 years. Measures: FPG (mg/dL and HbA1c (% of all subjects were measured using standard automated enzymatic methods. PG (mg/dL was self-measured at home two hours after meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner for one day using an Accu-chek ® glucometer. CAVI was measured using a VaSera VS-1500® device (Fukuda Denshi, and baPWV was calculated using a validated equation.CAVI and baPWV values were significantly higher in subjects with diabetes mellitus than in glucose normal and prediabetes groups (p<0.001. FPG, PG and HbA1c were positively associated with CAVI and baPWV. The β regression coefficient for: HbA1c was 0.112 (CI 95% 0.068 to 0.155 with CAVI, 0.266 (CI 95% 0.172 to 0.359 with baPWV; for PG was 0.006 (CI 95% 0.004 to 0.009 and for FPG was 0.005 (CI 95% 0.002 to 0.008 with baPWV; and for PG was 0.002 (CI 95% 0.001 to 0.003 and 0.003 (CI 95% 0.002 to 0.004 with CAVI (p<0.01 in all cases. When analysing by hyperglycaemic status, FPG, PG and HbA1c were positively associated with CAVI and baPWV in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus.FPG, PG and HbA1c show a positive association with CAVI and baPWV, in Caucasian adults with intermediate cardiovascular risk factors.
