Research and development of a lavatory training system is carried out to enable bed-ridden aged people to evacuate unaided and thereby to elevate their consciousness of self-reliance. The developed system consists of a multi-functional bed with a built-in transfer unit and a movement assisting system. The multi-functional bed consists of a device that automatically transfers the patient abed to a position on the bedside portable toilet, a device that is remotely controlled to change the posture of the patient from the in-bed state to a seated state, and an audio-visual system that encourages the patient into self-reliance. The movement assisting system enables a patient, who needs people's help in rising from the bed and in walking to the lavatory, to stand up, sit down, and walk, all unaided. The system has undergone field tests at 6 locations in hospitals, public facilities, and residential houses. The result is that for people of Category III it is almost certain that they can travel safely thanks to the system. The system is again evaluated high in barrier-free residential environments. The evacuation-support system is under development for not only the aged bedridden persons but also the persons disabled in exercising movement to excrete by themselves. When the person lying on his bed is going to excrete, his sequence of actions to be taken is to sit down on his bed, walk to the toilet, sit on it, simultaneously take off his clothes and excrete. After the excretion, the above actions are reversely taken as for as he lies on his bed. Researches are being made into the mechanical system which partially or entirely supports the above five necessary actions. The system structuring can depend upon the following five types of disabled persons` residual function: difficulty in sitting or moving without help. Paralyzed lower extremities and partially impaired upper extremities. Ability to walk with functional assistance. Ability to stand up with support but walk unstably. Ability to walk, leaning on and along the railing. In the present project, its three constituent elements are being developed which are the multi-functional bed internally equipped with transferring/riding/mounting apparatus, transfer support apparatus and multi-function portable toilet. The development of the present system is expected to be followed by that of the self-supporting excretion system which will be proper for Japanese houses. 3 figs., 1 tab.

A survey was made on autonomous responsive materials as a new material which reversibly change molecular structures and the aggregation state according to external stimuli. Autonomous responsive materials imitate environmental responsibility in the living organism system and have sensing, control and active functions for external stimuli. The materials are highly efficient and environmentally friendly. In biomimetic materials for soft actuators, drastic changes by temperature of elastic modulus of water-swollen hydrogel are used to the motion. In order to molecularly design stimulus-responsible polymer gel, studied are the relation between the micro structure and stimulus responsibility, dynamic correlation between the micro structure and the macro structure, etc. In the biomedical field, new cure and diagnosis using innovative materials are expected, and the application of autonomous responsive materials to the field is studied. For example, using hydrogel responding the temperature and the surface and controlling by temperature the interaction with components of the organism such as protein and cells, drug delivery in the organism is optimized. Also studied is the application of hydrophilic/hydrophobic changes by temperature to the chromatography. 215 refs., 47 figs., 11 tabs.

Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Shitashion Japan and Arthur Andersen Ltd., developed a 'marketing analysis support system' which integrally analyzes evaluation factors of various dimensions explaining consumers' purchasing behaviors and which supports business for the efficient operation of product development and demand prediction. This system breaks down products into each evaluation factor from psychological and physical viewpoints, and carries out various kinds of multivariate analysis, thereby making it easy to understand visually, for example, what evaluation factors decide relative positional relations between evaluation factors or between products as well as the position of a product in the whole. Further, more precise marketing analysis and prediction become possible by visually grasping blank areas of products, extent of competition, distribution of products, composition of product series, etc. (translated by NEDO)

A discussion was given on an `energy autonomous house` which utilizes more effectively photovoltaic power generation, solar heat and light in designing a wooden house to be built by using the conventional construction method. According to the plan, photovoltaic power generation modules and heat collectors are installed superimposed on a roof facing south. Heat-collected air is sent below the floor and the heat is stored in the concrete in winter, utilized as the floor heating type room heater. The hot air is used for hot water supply in other seasons. The building is of two stories with a total area of 118 m {sup 2}, and the photovoltaic generation capacity is 3.48 kW. The photovoltaic generation amount was calculated from insolation forecasted by the AMEDAS system, and energy balance of this house was estimated. The result therefrom may be summarized as follows: total energy supplied reached 11.6 Gcal, signifying that about 10.8% of the energy irradiated onto the building is utilized; ratio of the photovoltaic and solar heat utilization is 27% versus 73%; and energy consumption in this house was estimated and calculated from actual results, airtightness and adiabatic performance of old houses, whereas the energy autonomous rate has reached 92.8%. 5 refs., 2 figs., 8 tabs.

Full Text Available Dai Ato Gakujutsu Shien Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan Background: The ankle-brachial index (ABI and pulse wave velocity (PWV are indices of atherosclerosis and arterial stiffness. The Japan-made measuring devices of those indices have spread widely because of their convenience and the significance of the parameters. However, studies that comprehensively discuss the various pitfalls in using these indices are not available. Methods: This study presents several representative pitfalls in using the ABI and brachial-ankle PWV (baPWV by showing the result sheets of the device, “the Vascular Profiler”. Furthermore, some considerations when utilizing these indices in the future are also discussed. Results: Several diseases such as arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO, arterial calcification in the lower limb, arterial stenosis in the right upper-limb, aortic valve diseases, arterial stenosis in the upper-limb of the contralateral side of the hemodialysis access, are the representative pitfalls when evaluating ABI and baPWV. Moreover, a measurement error is found to actually exist. Furthermore, same phenomena are considered most likely to occur when using other similar indices and devices. Conclusion: The ABI and baPWV are the useful and significant biomarkers. Nevertheless, caution is sometimes necessary when interpreting them. Moreover, rigorous patient exclusion criteria should be considered when using those indices in the severely conditioned patient population. And the results of this study can be applied to enhance the literacy using other indices, such as the cardio-ankle vascular index and other similar devices. As part of the automatic driving system researches, a pilot driverless automobile was built and discussed, which is equipped with obstacle detection and automatic navigating functions without depending on ground facilities including guiding cables. A small car was mounted with a vision system to recognize obstacles three-dimensionally by means of two TV cameras, and a dead reckoning system to calculate the car position and direction from speeds of the rear wheels on a real time basis. The control algorithm, which recognizes obstacles and road range on the vision and drives the car automatically, uses a table-look-up method that retrieves a table stored with the necessary driving amount based on data from the vision system. The steering uses the target point following method algorithm provided that the has a map. As a result of driving tests, useful knowledges were obtained that the system meets the basic functions, but needs a few improvements because of it being an open loop. 36 refs., 22 figs., 2 tabs.

To reduce fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emission, this article introduces an actually constructed natural energy autonomous house. It has a solar collector on the south roof for hot water supply and a sky radiator on the north roof for cooling water supply. The sky radiator uses radiation cooling phenomena into the space by electromagnetic wave through the window of atmosphere. This house also has an insulated tank with a capacity of 31 m{sup 3} in its underground. In the long-term heat storage mode, the heat is collected through the solar radiation during the period from summer to spring and is stored in the underground water tank, to use it for heating and hot water supply in winter. The heat can be recovered from the garbage waste incinerator. A gas fired auxiliary boiler is used for the shortage. In the long-term heat regeneration mode, the heat is regenerated through the sky radiator during the period from spring to summer and is stored in the underground water tank, to use it for cooling in summer. For the shortage, the water is cooled using a heat pump operated by the midnight power. The insulating performance is improved by using the pair glass in windows and the glass wool in the walls. Rain water is collected in a tank with a capacity of 2 m{sup 3}, to use it for toilet water. Annual energy and water saving is equivalent to 600,000 yen. 10 refs., 10 figs., 2 tabs.

Full Text Available Dai Ato,1 Toshitami Sawayama2 1Gakujutsu Shien (Academic Support Co., Ltd. Tokyo, 2Sawayama Clinic, Okayama, Japan Abstract: While pulse wave velocity (PWV correlates with blood pressure (BP, its extent differs between patients, and some cases of high PWV in normotensives are present. Moreover, PWV frequently remains high in hypertensive patients despite adequate BP control. The factors associated with such phenomena are yet to be elucidated. Here, we investigated the factors associated with brachial–ankle PWV (baPWV in 107 patients whose systolic BP was under 140 mmHg at their latest baPWV measurement. There were 64 controlled hypertensives and 43 normotensives. Multivariate regression analysis identified age, hypertension, body mass index (BMI, systolic BP, and heart rate (HR as independent factors for baPWV. Next, we divided the subjects into groups according to their age (in 5-year increments and calculated the mean and standard deviation (SD of the baPWV for each group. For each age group, we defined patients with a baPWV above the mean + SD baPWV for the group as the high-baPWV cohort. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that BMI, hypertension, and smoking were independent determinants of a high-baPWV subject. This represents the first study to report the existence of the hypertensive state itself as one of the independent predictors of high baPWV in normotensive and well-treated hypertensive patients. This finding implies that the hypertensive state itself possibly worsens arterial stiffness independently from aging in spite of adequate BP maintenance. To prevent the early progression of arterial stiffness, the application of an appropriate intervention during the early stages of hypertension is important and the continuation of an appropriate BP treatment is suggested. Keywords: arterial stiffness, brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity, heart failure, hypertension, peripheral arterial disease

Outlined herein are a procedure developed to simulate performance of an energy-autonomous (independent) solar house referred to as HARBEMAN HOUSE (HH) built in 1996 in City of Sendai, comparison between the simulated and observed results, and characteristics of the solar house. The house is equipped with a solar collector and sky radiator, both installed on the roof, the former facing south to collect solar energy and generate hot water whereas the latter facing north to radiate heat and generate cool water. Both are connected to an underground heat-insulated tank having a capacity of 31m{sup 3}, which stores hot or cool water to keep their conditions for extended periods. The solar system operates in heat- or cool-storage mode. In the heat-storage mode, quantity of heat stored increases, although at a slow rate, as tank capacity increases. In the cool-storage mode, on the other hand, quantity of cool stored increases in proportion to tank capacity. This is because solar energy is collected throughout the year whereas cooling by radiation is concentrated in early spring. Loss rate of heat stored increases as tank capacity increases, and the opposite trend is observed with cool stored. 12 refs., 7 figs., 2 tabs.

This system enables a driver to park the car at a predetermined spot without the driver seeing the outside scene. The system shows on a driver seat display the steps that the driver is to follow and thereby supports the driver when visibility is poor, when the parking space is difficult to approach, when the driver is a novice, or when the driver is aged. The system ensures accurate positioning of the car by showing the steering direction and angle, the car speed, and the force of braking to the driver. For this purpose, the system knows the absolute car position by the use of an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag which is a kind of IC (Integrated Circuit) card and D-GPS (Differential-Global Positioning System), grasps the relative car position by the use of a gyroscope, and collects data from plural sensors, which are complementary to each other, such as a car-speed sensor and a steering sensor. The purpose is to develop fundamental technologies for navigation systems and mobile computing systems in museums, theme parks and cities. Concretely, we implement software agents into the mobile computing environment which consists of PHS, mobile computers and mobile robots, and realize various functions to access regional information. We have studied on Communityware which supports human activities and communities by using mobile agents implemented into mobile computers and town robots. The mobile agents, which intelligently process information obtained in physical and virtual worlds, access regional information which is omnipresent in the environment. With respect to the approach using mobile computers, we have provided one hundred mobile computers in the international conference on multiagent systems 1996 and carried out the first experimentation of mobile computing in the world. The mobile computer has two functions: Community Viewer which displays interactions between members of communities and Social Matchmaker which supports to hold meetings by searching for people who have common interests. With respect to the approach using town robots, we have developed a robot system which can robustly behave in a complex outdoor environment by using vision agents embedded in the environment. The system aims at support of people in streets. (NEDO)

The design-modification function is included by use of the hierarchy. The other new functions are finite element analysis systems for the main structure and components, and rigidity calculation for the main structure. The main structure and functional element models are confirmed to be useful also for utilization of information, and provide necessary information of the product models. 11 refs., 11 figs.

Objective of elevators plural control system for performing the operation control of multiple elevators is to improve the service to users. The service improvement toward a conventional plural control system is mainly to reduce waiting time on the riding floor from the calling button being pushed till elevator reaching the riding floor. Subsidiary to it, merely energy-saving is carried out. In the present study, a characterized supervisory control system was developed to make plural supervisory control receiving the requests from users to reduce not only the usual waiting time but also riding time and congestion inside. In order to meet the requests of users, a characterized support equipment was produced dialogically by combining fuzzy ratiocination, production system as well as simulation. The effects thereof were confirmed. 12 refs., ll figs., 2 tabs.

Development has been made on the element technologies for a home rehabilitation system for aphasia patients. First, studies were performed on an authoring procedure for aphasia patient training, and partial trial production and development were carried out on an authoring system for the training program formula. Then, studies were executed on a training simulation and analysis filter, and partial trial production and development were implemented on a home rehabilitation supporting and self-teaching system. Next, an input and output mechanism for voice signal processing was studied, and aphasia patient and caregiver human interface was partially fabricated on a trial basis. In addition, a remote rehabilitation communicating method was researched, and partial trial production was carried out on a remote rehabilitation evaluation and diagnosis support means. Finally, communication assisting means were researched, and a communication assisting system was partially produced on a trial basis. Good evaluation results were given on a demonstration system. Although partial indications were given on minute parts, practical agreement was obtained as a whole. Great expectation was given particularly on the remote rehabilitation system and the authoring system. (NEDO)

In a factory with a multi-stage production system, push-type scheduling methods can hardly improve the production rate without increasing the stocks of intermediates. For products whose specifications are known before their orders, a pull-type scheduling method named Kanban system has been developed, and has succeeded to improve the production rate without increasing the stocks of intermediates. The Kanban system, however, is not applicable to custom-made products whose specifications are not known before their orders. In this paper, a 'Virtual Kanban (VK) system' is presented as a pull-type scheduling method which is applicable to custom-made products, and its usefulness is demonstrated by simulation of an application specific integrated circuit manufacturing facility. Although not an antibiotic in a new class, it offers a glimmer of hope in combating serious infections secondary to multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria when we have not seen a new class of antibacterial, particularly for Gram-negative bacteria, for more than 10 years. In vitro, doripenem exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL and Amp-C β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae and anaerobes. Doripenem also exhibits better in vitro activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa compared to other anti-pseudomonal carbapenems. It combines the desirable activities of both imipenem and meropenem. It has similar activity to imipenem against Gram-positive pathogens and has the antimicrobial spectrum of meropenem against Gram-negative organisms. Several randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that doripenem is non-inferior to meropenem, imipenem, piperacillin/tazobactam, or levofloxacin in its efficacy and safety profile in treating a wide range of serious bacterial infections including intra-abdominal infection, complicated urinary tract infection, and nosocomial pneumonia. Due to its wide spectrum of activity and good safety profile it is susceptible to misuse leading to increasing rates of resistance

The systemic administration of acetylsalicylic acid decreases endothelial dysfunction, potentially reducing thrombus, enhancing vasodilatation, and inhibiting the progression of atherosclerosis; but, this is weakened by upper gastrointestinal bleeding. This study proposes a hybrid stent with biodegradable nanofibers, for the local, sustained delivery of acetylsalicylic acid to injured artery walls. Biodegradable nanofibers are prepared by first dissolving poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide and acetylsalicylic acid in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol. The solution is then electrospun into nanofibrous tubes, which are then mounted onto commercially available bare-metal stents. In vitro release rates of pharmaceuticals from nanofibers are characterized using an elution method, and a high-performance liquid chromatography assay. The experimental results suggest that biodegradable nanofibers

Outlined herein is performance of the solar system, followed for a year, installed in a solar house (HARBEMAN HOUSE) built in 1996 in City of Sendai. The house is equipped, on the roof, with a 30.42m{sup 2} wide solar collector on the south and sky radiator on the north. They are connected to a heat-insulated tank (31m{sup 3}) installed underground, storing hot or cool water which carries energy for heating/air-conditioning and hot water. The solar system operates in a long-term hot or cool water storage mode. In the hot water storage mode, the solar collector is connected to the underground main tank, where pumped-up water heated by solar heat is stored to be supplied as hot water. Heat collected is low during the December-February period, and recovered in March. In the cool water storage mode, the radiator is connected to the underground main tank, where pumped-up water is cooled by radiation and stored to be supplied to a fan coil unit in each room for air-conditioning. The recorded lowest temperature of water in the tank is 5.1degC. No air-conditioning load is observed, on account of the unseasonal weather. 3 refs., 10 figs., 2 tabs.

It is well known that reverse iontophoresis can enhance transdermal extraction of small molecules, and even large molecules if reverse iontophoresis is used together with electroporation. Electroporation is the use of a high-voltage electrical pulse to create nanochannels within the stratum corneum, temporarily and reversibly. Reverse iontophoresis is the use of a small current to facilitate both charged and uncharged molecule transportation across the skin. The objectives of this in vitro study were to determine whether PSA and osteopontin are extractable transdermally and noninvasively and whether urea, PSA, and osteopontin can be extracted simultaneously by electroporation and reverse iontophoresis. Methods: All in vitro experiments were conducted using a diffusion cell assembled with the stratum corneum of porcine skin. Three different symmetrical biphasic direct currents (SBdc, five various electroporations, and a combination of the two techniques were applied to the diffusion cell via Ag/AgCl electrodes. The three different SBdc had the same current density of 0.3 mA/cm2, but different phase durations of 0 (ie, no current, control group, 30, and 180 seconds. The five different electroporations had the same pulse width of 1 msec and number of pulses per second

Autonomic neuropathy function immediately after a change to upright posture has been evaluated by applying transient response function of the system to the blood regulation system. The impulse response function was determined from the change in heart rate before postural change to the upright posture, and was compared with the transient change immediately after a change to the upright posture. The time series of R-R interval of electrocardiogram was used as the time series of the change in heart rate. To determine the impulse response function, an autoregressive model was applied to the R-R interval time series. The impulse response function at the steady state is a transient reaction at the impulse stimulation added to the blood regulation system. The R-R interval decreases rapidly by the autonomic neuropathy reaction in which the blood is rapidly transferred into the legs immediately after a change to upright posture. There is a close correlation between the initial temporary decrease in R-R interval and the impulse response function derived from the change in heart rate immediately after a change to the upright posture. Accordingly, the blood regulation and autonomic neuropathy functions can be evaluated by the impulse response function without actual standing test and load of tested persons. 9 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Taking up China, India, Indonesia and Thailand as the object, investigations were performed on political financing measures that can be used for installing energy saving facilities, and on applicable preferential taxation systems that are applied in each country. Indonesia has no aid measures such as subsidies and political financing directly purposed for energy conservation. Import duty exemption is applied for the purpose of promoting investments. Three kinds of funds are available through IFCT to implement fund aid to protect the environment. Energy saving fund has been established as an energy saving policy to provide subsidies. Energy saving machineries recognized by the investment committee are exempted from the import duties. India has no political financing measures directly purposed for energy conservation. Its preferential taxation system for energy conservation includes the 100% accelerated amortization system for energy saving machineries and facilities, and the preferential import duty system. In China, the financing from the China National Development Bank is considered utilizable in installing energy saving facilities. This project aims at development, demonstration and utilization of waste recycling technologies. This report summarizes the fiscal 1998 results. The test/demonstration plant for separation and removal of foreign materials was constructed for effective use of waste building wood, and its optimum operation condition was studied. Although some foreign materials exists, 90% of waste building wood chips were separated and recovered through some improvements for the plant. An advanced separation technology is expected. As for fibering technology, fibers with target compression strength were obtained from cedar chips through a disintegration experiment using a newly developed refiner plate. Although the compression strength of fibers obtained from waste building wood chips was slightly poor, it is attained by increasing the target specific gravity of light- weight wooden materials by nearly 10% from 0.1. As for fiber orientation technology, as the tension of a forming belt was adjusted to achieve sufficient width compression, nearly 90% of the target compression strength was attained. A width compression method remains to be solved. (NEDO)

Based on the test results, its practical advantage and disadvantage were illustrated. The DVC system was constructed using general LAN, and operation experiments were conducted, as to research activity. From the interview with participants and analysis of conversation history, advantage and disadvantage of this system were clarified. Performance of the trial system was examined using practical LAN, to compare with the performance of commercial systems. When using LAN, the same problems were given. It was found that the DVC system can not substitute for the conventional real face to face meeting, but it is suitable for some communication styles, for example free participation meeting or collaboration based on the same objective, which has been hard up to this time. In addition, software was made as trial, by which reservation of meeting, announcement, and calling can be carried out. 26 refs., 6 figs., 5 tabs.

This paper reports the current research result of the field work information support system in a one-stop service system. The work arrangement in the branch office of an electric company is how to assign the service operator efficiently and accurately for the transfer to the customer. This problem is grasped as a traveling salesman problem (TSP) of `make the round of `n` works by `m` persons for processing and return to the branch office with the branch office as a start point`. The system in which the day`s schedule of each operator can be automatically created by entering only the work schedule (including limitation conditions (difficulty degree of work contents or time appointment) and skill management information of each work) was investigated. The compatibility and evaluation of each traveling route search method were carried out. As a result, the genetic algorithm is judged to be fully practical. The communication information for field work could be retrieved in real time using PHS. This system can also be applied to the maintenance or consulting including a disaster or accident as well as general work. 4 figs., 1 tab.

Considering integrated hull and piping design in shipbuilding industry as a good example for concurrent engineering (CE), discussions were given on a computer aided method to perform integrated hull and piping design smoothly. When CE aiding by means of a computer is considered, it is important to discuss a method for information management not only for `utilization of product models`, but also for `maintaining consistency between items of product information` and `concurrent utilization and production of product information` in concurrent designs. For the CE aided information management, utilization and production of the product information is effective if restrictive relationship between items of product information, and design functions are made clear. Definitions were given on the restrictive relationship between items of product information and `restrictive relationship information` that has `decision/provisional decision`, `date and time`, `designer` and `design functions`. Furthermore, `comprehensive relationship between items of product information` that can be produced from the restrictive relationship information was defined as a `restrictive network`. In Japan, there is so far accumulation of high level mechatronics technology and it is thought that there is possible to develop a system to fulfill such needs. In this system, equipment has deep connection with human being and natural coexistence between the equipment and human being is most necessary. Accordingly, development and practical use of walking practicing machine used for elderly people, walking support system, daily life work support system and so forth are expected by making successful in practice the coexistence functions of high level robot/mechatronics technology and machine/man. Informatization using mainly computers is more and more important contributing to the upgrading in society, economy and a variety of fields. As to informatization in developing countries, however, there has still been few to be seen. Accordingly, gaps are getting larger between developing countries and developed countries where informatization is acceleratedly advanced. In the light of such actual state, Center of the International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC) contracted with NEDO and promoted a project `Manufacturing technology supported by advanced and integrated information system through international cooperation.` This is a project to study jointly with five Asian countries with which NEDO made a basic contract, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Working group is set up for each theme such as automobiles/parts, electric home appliances/parts, and fiber/apparel, to study the construction of a model house and the design of a system. In fiscal 1994, the field survey was conducted, and in fiscal 1995 the system design was started. 16 figs., 1 tab.

Among NEDO`s international research cooperation projects, the paper described Japan`s cooperation with Asian countries in development of an easy-operated electronic design/production supporting system. The project aims to realize information realtime technology by which data for design/manufacturing of machine/electronics/fiber/apparel can mutually be used among countries. For it, design data standard and electronic information exchange standard are developed. A production information integrated database system is developed for sharing processing data. Parts data are put into a library. Graphic user interface and multi-media technology are developed so as to comply with the environment of different usages. In fiscal 1994, emphasis of activities was placed on survey of the status quo of the institution of the party country, fermentation of mutual understanding, and study of a cooperative project plan. Memorandums on research cooperation were concluded with Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. In addition, understanding of this project by the party country was able to be enhanced

Purpose of the project is to develop a transfer aid system for the elderly who need assistance in moving from a bed or a chair. It can make up insufficiency of assistant persons and can help to comfortably move the elderly. It has the highest demand in rehabilitation centers or hospitals. We have been designing an actuator using a metal hydride alloy for more than ten years and have confirmed that the actuator is very useful for developing the transfer. Furthermore, we have designed the transfer from a view point of human interfaces. This research was done under the above background. 1. We studied a comfortable posture for the elderly at an initial phase of standing to design the optimal knee pad using a life-size model of a transfer. Especially, we managed to lighten the burden imposed on the elderly by referring electromyographic signals at lower limbs and ground reaction forces. 2. Since the tactile sensation of the bottom of elderly person's foot gets dull, we designed a foot stage to prevent the elderly from the dull. 3. We determined the optimal mixture rate of a metal hydride alloy and developed an elastic bellows in order to design the actuator used for the transfer aid. 4. We determined the optimal compliance to prevent the elderly from a mechanical shock and designed a mechanism so that the transfer aid can work well. 5. Based on the above results, we developed the transfer aid using the metal hydride actuator. It was ascertained that it can lift a elderly person with 80kg weight by using only 40g alloy. Furthermore, it is proved that the transfer is not heavy (about 20g weight), small, silent, and moves smoothly by a battery on the market. (NEDO)

A method for determining part re-use and recycling strategy in product design is considered for optimal design of total product life cycle based on the concept of Right Quality Products. For this purpose, it is important to be able to estimate part deterioration status under various product usage conditions. For supporting product designers' decision making about the product life cycle in preliminary design phase, the deterioration estimation is not required to be very exact, but to generate every possible deterioration modes qualitatively. Then, based on these deterioration modes, functional behaviour of target products is simulated, and possible product failure modes can be generated. By utilizing the FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) method, the effects of failure modes are evaluated, and the results are fed back to product designers for confirming their design in terms of total product life cycle optimization. A basic methodology is considered, and case study has been done for a mechanical assembly of a one-time use camera. The assembly consists of injection molded parts. Various CAE methods have been used for predicting possible part failures due to initial residual stress, warp, fatigue, creep, and wear. Then kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanical assembly has been done for detecting the effect of part deterioration on mechanism movements. Several critical failure modes have been detected, and the effects of those failures have been checked by the FMEA method. (NEDO)

For a coordinated task to be accomplished in an organization, documents, charts, and data produced by plural workers need to be shared by the plural workers. This information sharing setup will function more effectively when the meanings and purposes of documents, etc., are arranged in good order relative to the other documents and when they are managed as a group of documents organically linked with each other and properly updated as the task approaches completion. In the self-evolving databases proposed so far, five types of document links representing the relations between documents are automatically generated and the documents are unifiedly managed for the documents yielded by coordinated work to be arranged in a proper order. A procedure for automatically generating document links are established on the basis of information received from the document retrieval system and Lotus Notes application. In a self-evolving database, the document on either side of a link is apt to be lost due to users` moving or deleting documents. An automatic procedure is developed in this report which will enable such document links to correctly restore themselves without loss of semantic relations. 12 refs., 11 figs., 3 tabs.

R and D was conducted for the purpose of developing the alternative natural gas manufacturing process that, using coal as the raw material, is highly efficient as well as environmentally superior, with the fiscal 1996 results reported. A test research was carried out on the coal hydrogasification process which was selected as the optimum process based on the studies in the previous years. On the basis of the results of the studies, a free fall pyrolyzer was employed as the test equipment for the use of behavior research of hetero-elements in the test. The basic specifications were set based on a hydrogen/coal ratio of 0.2, a temperature of 950 degrees C and a pressure of 7 MPa, which are the reaction conditions of the ARCH reactor, with the basic design drafted accordingly. In a preliminary examination on the mechanisms of the coal hydrogasification reaction, analysis was made on the representative 20 different kinds of coals, on the six kinds of which studies were made on the gasification behavior using a constant heating rate pyrolyzer. As a result, from the temperature dependency of a methane forming speed, it was assumed that three components of coal had bearing upon the gasification behavior. (NEDO)

R and D was conducted for the purpose of developing the alternative natural gas manufacturing process that, using coal as the raw material, is highly efficient as well as environmentally superior, with the fiscal 1998 results reported. A hydrogasification test was conducted on Taiheiyo coal at a temperature of 1,173k and a pressure of 7 MPa, which showed that all gaseous products other than methane stopped their evolution roughly in the heat-up process, while methane continued to evolve to show the highest yield. In the reactivity comparison of various types of coal, coals with carbon content of 80% or below were high in reactivity and considered suitable for hydrogasification feedstock. It was also suggested that the hydrogasification reactivity of low rank coals including sub-bituminous coals or below might be greatly affected by the presence/absence of the catalytic effects of ion-exchanged metals. Behavior experiments of sulfur and nitrogen in coal in the hydrogenation reaction were carried out using a continuous free-fall type reactor, which elucidated the effects of hydrogen pressure and gas residence time among various operational elements. To suppress the emission of environmental pollutants from coal utilization in China and to contribute to stable security of Japan`s energy, demonstration of clean coal technology and consolidation of diffusion base to be introduced into China have been promoted. Demonstration program for diffusing simplified desulfurizers has been promoted. For accelerating the achievement, experts of desulfurizers were delegated to Weifang Chemical Industry Works, to support the program. Exhaust gas is introduced from boiler via water spray dust remover, suction fan and centralized stack into absorption tower of the simplified wet-type desulfurizer. In the ascending process, the exhaust gas contacts with absorbent, to remove SO2 and dust. The absorbent is blasted up through the spray nozzle. The absorbent is oxidized by the air into sulfate ion in the liquid chamber at the lower part of tower, and neutralized by hydrated lime to form gypsum. Through the continuous operation for two years, understandings were remarkably increased. However, good treatment of the tax system is required for further diffusion. Though there are no problems for ordinary start and stop, emergency operation is insufficient. There are some problems in the maintenance due to the delay of finding failures. 16 figs., 1 tab.

However, few developing countries have established sufficient information systems, in spite of their strong desires to do so, which will further widen the gap between them and advanced countries, where these systems are acceleratedly advancing. Given these situations, Center of International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC) has been implementing various projects for providing assistance to and cooperation with oversea countries which are trying to develop information systems. This report summarizes the project, which CICC has been commissioned by NEDO as part of the cooperation programs, for manufacturing technology supported by advanced and integrated information system through international cooperation. It outlines the research cooperation memoranda NEDO has concluded with Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, and the authorities of China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. (NEDO)

The documentation assumes a new type high speed ship, higher than 50kt in speed and heavier than 1000ton in dead weight, to require the ocean goingness, middle distance navigation and high speed transport. The present report dealed with how to discriminate a ship, navigating at a high speed on oceanic waves, in critical condition against the encountering waves. Navigating far distantly from the shore, the ship was generally made to positively utilize the information data from the geostationary metheorological satellite (GMS) to be applied as a support soft tool for the maritime system and other designs. As a result, the high speed ship on the quartering waves was numerically elucidated in critical condition against the encountering waves and simultaneously assumed in critical course upon discriminating the critical condition in a concretely designated oceanic area. It was shown that, if different Froude numbers are calculated and ordered of critical circular frequency, angle, wave period, etc. against the encountering, a dimensionally arbitrary ship is easily discriminatable in critical course in an arbitrary oceanic area by utilizing a GMS determination support tool. 12 refs., 14 figs., 2 tabs.

In relation to the circulating fluidized bed boiler which reduces the amount of sulfur oxides emitted in coal utilization, a verification project was carried out on installation of the equipment and spread activity in China and the Philippines contributing to the control of environmental pollutant associated with coal utilization and the effective use of energy. At the Fanshan area, installed was a 10t/h internal circulating fluidized bed boiler. At the performance test, coal includes around 7% of impurities such as stone, and the impurities should be excluded continuously at the time of actual run. Therefore, the boiler efficiency had to be changed from 89.5% to 85.8%. Further, power generation facilities have not yet been finished, and the overall operation of boiler turbine has not been executed. At the Zibo area, a 30t/h external circulating fluidized bed boiler was installed. The boiler efficiency reached 86.1%, over the targeted value. At the Batangas area in the Philippines, a 10t/h internal circulating fluidized bed boiler was installed. The boiler efficiency reached 85.8%, over the designed value. About the coal produced in the Philippines, slagging was feared, but the combustion state was favorable. 82 figs., 21 tabs.

To reduce SOx with coal utilization, a desulfurizer is introduced in Thailand as diffusion activities in the demonstration program. The purpose is to reduce the environmental pollutants. For this desulfurizer, lime mud mainly composed of lime stone is used as an absorber. SO2 in the flue gas is absorbed by the slurry of lime mud, to form calcium sulfite. The calcium sulfite blown in the bottom of recycling tank is oxidized by oxygen in the air, to form gypsum. The gypsum is recovered as a by-product. In this fiscal year, a feeder of lime stone, spray nozzles, and various analysis apparatuses were supplied. Supervisors for electric instrumentation/control were also dispatched as well as for main body construction, to carry out the instrumentation setting works, check of sequences, and adjustment of apparatuses. After the test operation, supervisors for the demonstration operation were dispatched up to March 1998, to conduct the cooperation works between Japan and Thailand sides. Thus, successful and successive demonstration operation was confirmed. 21 figs., 6 tabs.

Surveyed are the roles of the government, important for environmental buildup for technological innovation. The U.S. research and development support programs are classed into contracts, grants, cooperative agreements, and CRADAs (Cooperative Research and Development Agreements). The government financially supports the first three, but not CRADA. It provides CRADA with manpower, facilities, and resources. The research and development (R-and-D) appropriation not for national defense in the U.S. fiscal 2000 budget is up 36% to $39.4 billion occupying 50.6% of the total R-and-D expense. The basic research appropriation is given the highest priority, enjoying an increase of 4.7% to $18.1 billion. In the U.S., taxation for R-and-D expenses is done in two ways. One is a research expense tax deduction system under which R-and-D expense is handled as a cost, a subject of deduction. The other is a research and experiment tax deduction system under which a certain percentage of R-and-D increment is free of taxation. NEDO's (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) system for national R-and-D projects is scheduled to change extensively upon reorganization of the government ministries and agencies in January, 2001. Under the circumstances, the current and future systems of the state supports for R-and-D are outlined, and the position of NEDO in them is clarified. As part of the research and development of carbon-based high-function material technologies, research and development has been performed on a material creating technology and a process technology to crease mechanically high-function materials. The former technology performs synthesis by using the electron excited CVD process and the explosion synthesizing process, intended to analyze the structure and properties thereof. It is intended to synthesize nitriding-based carbon films and elucidate their composition and structure by using the mass separation ion beam method and the laser beams. Synthesizing nano tubes by utilizing catalytic reactions, and investigating their properties are intended by using the thermal CVD process, plasma CVD process and arc discharge process. Elucidation is intended on the reaction and production mechanisms of carbon-based materials, theory estimation, structures possessed by the carbon-based materials, and mechanisms to manifest their characteristics. The latter technology relates to the three assignments subjected to a composition inclining film forming technology, a complex shaped film forming and micro processing technology, and a large area film forming technology. It is intended to utilize positively such properties as low friction and wear performance and high-temperature corrosion resistance expected in high-function carbon-based materials including amorphous carbon, diamond and nitrided carbon for the purpose of application to surface protection of movable parts in different industrial machines, and building materials including glasses. The aim is to develop and popularize techniques relating to geological information such as thermal history. The efforts center about the application of a now-available core fracture measuring system to developed geothermal fields and about the development of new technologies. The measuring system is applied to some core cuttings collected from five boreholes in the Akinomiya district, Akita Prefecture, and the system is used for (1) the evaluation of homogenization temperatures of inclusions in the fluid, (2) the measurement of the points of melting from ice of inclusions in the fluid, and (3) the implementation of laser Raman spectroscopy. Under item (1), it is found that the minimum homogenization temperature of quartz phenocryst in the mother rock or of low-salinity fluid inclusion in a quartz vein is near the current subsurface temperature and that subsurface and reservoir temperatures may be known by evaluating their homogenization temperature. Under item (2), it is found that the NaCl equivalent salinity is distributed in the range of 0.0 to 25wt% and that, in this connection, there is difference between a fluid in a fluid flow and a fluid spurting as thermal water in the Akinomiya district. Under item (3), CO2, N{sub 2}, and CH{sub 4} are detected in most of the boreholes. Efforts are exerted to develop a hydrothermal fluid analyzing technique using a rapid rock dating method and traces of chemical ingredients in hydrothermal minerals. (NEDO)

Discussions have been given on identification of actual status of exhaust gas emission during driving, starting, and idling of automobiles, on technologies to enhance fuel consumption and reduce exhaust gas emission, and on technologies to measure harmful substances. In the investigation of effects of environmental temperatures on evaporation gas, it was shown that fuel evaporation generated from the fuel tank increases as the average ambient temperature rises. In the investigation of effects of environmental temperatures on exhaust gas and fuel consumption, it was discovered that the effects of environmental temperatures on 10{center_dot}15 mode regulated exhaust gas differ depending on vehicles, and no definite difference due to combustion systems was recognized. Carbon monoxide and THC under the 11 mode regulation showed a trend to increase when the environmental temperature falls down. In the investigation of effects of fuel properties on exhaust gas, no definite difference due to combustion systems was recognized as a result of measurements using various types of gasoline having different distillation properties. In the investigation of analysis methods for harmful substances, development has been made on an analysis method mainly for 1-3 butadiene. (NEDO)

For the purpose of clarifying measures for reducing fuel consumption and exhaust gas of automobiles, survey was made of effects of environmental temperatures and fuel properties on exhaust gas. In the survey of effects of environmental temperatures, experiment on exhaust gas was carried out by changing the laboratory temperature from 5 degrees C to 35 degrees C using direct injection gasoline engine. As a result, it was found out that environmental temperatures have effects exhaust gas according to changes in purification rate by rise in catalytic temperature, changes in air/fuel ratio by changes in air density, control methods to secure starting-up/drivability, etc. In the survey of effects of gasoline properties, study was made on effects of distillation properties, especially, 90% distillation temperature (T90) on exhaust gas. As a result, in 10(center dot)15 mode, CO and THC decreased with a decrease in T90 both in three-way catalytic car and direct injection car. Especially, CO decreased to about 1/4 when decreasing T90 from 151 degrees C to 116 degrees C. NOx increased in three-way catalytic car and decreased in direct injection car with a decrease in T90. To verify the clean coal technology to be diffused in China and consolidate its diffusion basis, demonstration project of circulating fluidized bed boiler was conducted through the cooperation with China which is positive in its introduction. This report describes its characteristics. Coal and limestone are supplied in a lower part of combustion chamber, and are mixed with circulating ash by fluidized air for combustion. Densely fluidized bed the same as the bubbling fluidized bed is formed in the lower part of combustion chamber, which provides excellent stability in ignition and combustion. Particles including ash, char and limestone formed during the combustion are discharged into the cyclone through the convection heat transfer part at the outlet of combustion chamber with the combustion gas flow. Since the gas temperature is lowered to 400 to 500degC at the convection heat transfer part, troubles of the ash circulating system can be prevented. The combustion gas separated from ash at the cyclone is discharged through the heat exchanger and precipitator, and the collected ash is returned to the lower part of combustion chamber. In FY 1997, design, fabrication, procurement/inspection, field survey/meeting, survey of visitors/meeting, and education were carried out. 4 figs., 4 tabs.

For the purpose of spreading the technology for automobile maintenance in Saudi Arabia, an investigational study was made of the actual state of the automobile utilization environment in Saudi Arabia. In Saudi Arabia, air pollution is becoming a serious problem with the rapid progress of motorization, and measures for automobile maintenance technology should be taken such as the use of lead-free gasoline, spread of catalyst car and introduction of new engine technology. However, the number of able car mechanics with Saudi Arabian nationality is low, and they rely on workers from other countries for it. Further, usually people continuously drive cars at high speed under the severe environment where there are high temperature, solar radiation, dust, etc. As a result of the study, the following were cited as the maintenance technology of which the R and D are expected: technology for lead-free gasoline, basic education for electronics, technology for use of trouble diagnosis unit, technology of preventive maintenance supposing high speed traveling, technology for recycle use of parts, standards for maintenance of rubber parts, establishment of standards of maintenance of Saudi Arabia's own, making of technical books/data to be needed for training of Saudi Arabian engineers. To evaluate geothermal reservoirs in the initial stage of development, to keep stable output in service operation, and to develop a technology effective for extraction from peripheral reservoirs, study was made on a reservoir variation prediction technique, in particular, a modeling support technique. This paper describes the result in fiscal 1997. Underground temperature estimation technique using homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions among core fault system measurement systems was applied to Wasabizawa field. The effect of stretching is important to estimate reservoir temperatures, and use of a minimum homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions in quartz was suitable. Even in the case of no quartz in hydrothermal veins, measured data of quartz (secondary fluid inclusion) in parent rocks adjacent to hydrothermal veins well agreed with measured temperature data. The developmental possibility of a new modeling support technique was confirmed enough through collection of documents and information. Based on the result, measurement equipment suitable for R and D was selected, and a measurement system was established through preliminary experiments. 39 refs., 35 figs., 6 tabs.

This paper describes development of a technology to decompose dioxins in incineration fly ash. Experiments were carried out during fiscal 1998 by using a bench-scale plant and a laboratory-scale plant of the installed supercritical water treatment equipment designed and fabricated in fiscal 1997. With the bench-scale plant, operation methods were discussed, whereas high temperature and pressure operation of 25 MPa and a temperature internal to the reactor of 350 degrees C were achieved. An alcohol combustion test and a preliminary slurry delivery test were also performed. With the laboratory-scale plant, operating methods were discussed, and combustion tests were carried out by using different organic matters as fuels for the supercritical water oxidation reactor. Investigations were executed on the effects of reactive operation parameters on organic matter decomposition rates, produced gas compositions, and reactor wall temperatures. The intensity of hydrogen bond between solvent and water has decreased to almost half of the normal temperature and pressure water in the vicinity of the critical point. However, strong interaction still remained in terms of per unit density. A portable equipment (650 degrees C and 25 MPa at the maximum, and standard treatment quantity of dry fly ash of 1 kg/h) was operated for demonstration. Operation methods and organic matter decomposition characteristics were identified in alcohol operation and slurry operation. (NEDO)

This paper describes the discussion report for fiscal 1998 on the CMG (coal methane gas) recovery and utilization project to be implemented from fiscal 1998 through fiscal 2002 at Tiefa Mining Bureau of Liaoning Province in China. The Daixing mine was selected as the survey object. The introduced technologies and facilities include test drilling for degassing (medium measure horizontal degassing of 300-m class), induction from degassing holes, fly ash sealing, sealed gas degassing, surveillance and control technologies and facilities. The recovered gas is to be supplied to the cities of Tiefa and Tieling as town gas, for which compressed gas feeding and controlling technologies and facilities will be introduced. This paper lists the gush-out quantity (1,000 Nm{sup 3}), the recovery quantity (1,000 Nm{sup 3}), the recovered gas concentration (%), the utilization quantity (1,000 Nm{sup 3}), and the utilization rate (%). The figures for the respective items before and after the implementation are 128366, 32949, 44.5, 7000, 5, 123500, 43890, 49.1, 39826, and 32. The quantity of gas gushing out at facings decreases in association with increase in the recovered gas quantity, whereas the gas concentration at facings in the Daixing mine in 2003 is estimated to decrease to 0.1%, contributing to safe mining operation. For the follow-up project, to promote the diffusion of results of the clean coal technology (CCT) model projects, experts of circulating fluidized bed boilers were dispatched, to guide and advise for the operation of facilities introduced in these projects. The purpose of these projects is to diffuse the CCTs, and to support the promotion of environmental measures. Some guidance and advice about operation processes, data processing, operation regulation, maintenance, and boiler maintenance works were provided to the Ministry of Energy and Electric Power Corporation of the Philippines. Semirara, Malangas, and Samar coals in the Philippines were used for the tests. The boiler facilities could be operated by Philippine operators themselves. Based on the guidance and advice about operation processes, combustion tests using various Philippine coals were also planned and conducted by themselves. The maintenance techniques were transferred to Philippine operators through the inspection, repair and advice. The Philippine side understood the technologies well, and the circulating fluidized bed boiler technology was independently educated in the Philippines. 23 figs., 16 tabs.

This Green Helmet Project is intended to suppress generation of environment polluting substances in association with coal utilization in Thailand by demonstrating and improving the proliferation infrastructure for the clean coal technology to be used widely in Thailand. The project is also intended to serve for stabilized assurance of energies for Japan. The demonstration project related to briquette manufacturing facilities executed as one of the 'Projects to support introduction of environment friendly coal utilization system' is intended to manufacture at low cost a briquette which is low in odor, free of smoke, and suppressed largely of sulfur oxide generation. The briquette is made by adding clayish minerals, sulfur, a fixing agent and a binder into brown coal being a low grade coal. The project implements proliferation of the technology to reduce environmental load associated with coal utilization in developing countries according to the situation and needs of the counterpart countries. The present project has performed the site surveys and guidance of operation and maintenance techniques as follow-up works of the demonstration project having been completed by cooperation between Japan and Thailand. It is considered that what had been intended in the beginning has been achieved sufficiently. (NEDO)

This project is aimed at establishing the international standards for the mechanical safety area. Described herein are the FY 2000 results of the developmental research on the machine monitoring devices of the next generation in which the image processing technologies are applied. The developed image sensors are the video camera and optical radar type sensor capable of scanning the three-dimensional space. The video camera functions self-confirmation that it is functioning without failure by the aid of the background reference pattern, and detects a person and machine when the pattern is hidden by them. The optical radar type sensor works to continuously confirm its performance by monitoring light reflected from the standard reflection body. The machine monitoring algorithms with the aid of the two-value images are also studied for e.g., judgment of stopping a machine by predicting that it will enter a closed space. The prototype monitor developed is subjected to various tests, including the tests of the individual device and assemblies in which it is incorporated, and the field tests in which it is incorporated in a machine in a commercial production line, to confirm that it can exhibit all of its required functions. As to the development of coal use hydrogen production technology, the paper studied the reactivity of char and ignition characteristics of various coals in the use of electric furnace and the participation in pilot plant test and the improvement, and the FY 1993 results were reported. In the study of reactivity of char, it was found that the reactivity was the same, regardless of the equipment and kind of raw coal, if considered of the ratio of the total oxygen amount (the char-containing oxygen amount added to the oxygen supply amount) to the carbon supply amount in char. In the test on ignition characteristics of overseas coals, the same characteristics as those of the Taiheiyo coal conventionally tested were obtained and it was found that it was good to use the same method for start-up of gasifier as conventionally used. In the pilot plant test in the previous year, slag and ash stuck to the outlet of the gasification part and heat recovery part and developed, which hindered the continued operation. To improve it, the following were carried out: model study, study of ash sintering, study using the synthetic test equipment, analysis of the deposit in gasifier, etc. Based on these results, the plant was improved, and the continued operation of 1,149 hours was stably achieved in RUN8. As a support study for the development of an entrained bed coal gasification power plant by a 200 t/d pilot plant, the dismantling study was made for gasifier facilities, desulfurization facilities, dedusting facilities at the existing 40 t/d testing facilities. In the results of the analysis of the specimens sampled from gasifier and peripheral facilities, the corrosion loss of thickness was great in carbon steel/low-alloy steel equipment, and the generation of intergranular corrosion/intergranular crack was recognized in stainless steel equipment. The loss of thickness caused by erosion was also recognized in carrier tubes, etc. As to the high-temperature dry desulfurization system, the damage was totally great, but the effect of taking measures for it was unclear because the loss of thickness by corrosion/abrasion had not been measured regularly. Relating to the high-temperature dry dedusting system, there used to be a lot of troubles from stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion, and the best measures for corrosion prevention were taken for each trouble. As to the Al thermal spraying, stabilized thermal treatment, shot-peening, etc., the excellent corrosion prevention effect was recognized on the austenite stainless steel. (NEDO)

With the purpose of developing high strength and high-anticorrosive aluminum-based material through microstructure control, R and D was conducted, with fiscal 2000 results compiled. In the research of grain refinement mechanism, molten metal rolled stock was experimentally produced in which Mg content was varied 0-2.5 mass % with Al-2.5 mass % Mn as its base. As a result, a microstructure with an average grain size of about 3 {mu}m was obtained by processing the alloy through homogenization at 550 degrees C, cold rolling by 91% and the final treatment at 350 degrees C without Mg addition. Addition of Mg increased square grain boundaries in the microstructure, raising proof stress to about 180 MPa in Al-2.5%Mn-2.5%Mg alloy. In the research of development of the machining process, a rapid heating process was performed on a typical aluminum alloy, with the effect examined, by an alloy system or a plate thickness, on the electric power used and on the temperature reached. A rapidly heated aluminum alloy plate turned to have a microstructure with equi-axed grains of a uniform size, compared with a salt bath processed material heated at the same temperature. (NEDO)

The contents of the development are (1) establishment of the practical measuring system for core fracture system, and (2) establishment of new modeling support technology. In (1), as the core fraction system measuring system, the measurement of fluid inclusion homogenization temperature and melting point and laser Raman spectroscopy were applied to the Wasabizawa area to obtain the results. In (2), the R and D were conducted of a rapid age measuring method for altered rock/unaltered rock and an analytical method for fluid flow using trace chemical components of hydrothermal minerals. In the former, 3-D thermoluminescent intensity of the age-known quartz was measured. The TL age of weak altered rock of Kijiyama dacite in the Wasabizawa area was 320Ka, almost the same result as 320Ka already reported. In the latter, trace components of quartz were measured at each well, and changes in the depth direction were made clear. It was made clear that the variation of Na/K ratio is large around the lost circulation stratum. The geothermal fluid flow was made clear by the analysis of similarity of the intensity ratio. (NEDO)

As to the development of coal use hydrogen production technology, the paper made the test study on the improvement of gasifier use materials and evaluation of the characteristics, the evaluation test in the environment using the actual machine, etc., and the FY 1993 results were reported. The results of the study were as follows. Concerning the shaped refractory for gasifier hearth, it was found that high chromia base and picrochromite base refractory development materials had much more excellent coal slag resistance than other existing component-system materials. It was shown that the development materials began to deteriorate under the coal gasification environment at temperatures of about 1,500 degrees C or higher. As to the mullite ceramics, a possibility was shown of improving the slag permeation resistance by making the crystal grain coarse by long-time sintering. By the survey of the state of damage of the proposed materials (refractory and iridium) used in the operational environment of the pilot plant, the outlook for use limit was made clear. In the environment test using the actual machine on the proposed metal base alloy of the typical equipment of the pilot plant, the correspondence between the operational environment and material corrosion was made clear. In the research and development of IMI (intelligent micro instrument) substrate devices, a designing method is established and, using the method, device manufacturing technologies are tested and evaluated and the results are reflected on the experimental construction of a sensor and an IC probe. In the research and development of a sensor and a sensing system, efforts are focused on a chlorine gas sensor, and a prototype No. 1 is designed and fabricated. In a test conducted in the presence of gas of 0-10ppm concentration, the prototype transmits signals that indicate excellent linearity and responsiveness. In the research and development of a probe for measuring electronic devices, efforts are made to put to practical use an IC (integrated circuit) probe of 40{mu}m pitch times 400 arrays, and specifications to develop for the probe are defined. A tentatively built cantilever structure shows values that justify its practical application. In the research and development of an IMI electronic circuit, a prototype No. 1 of a system for processing and transmitting sensor signals by radio is manufactured, which operates on the carrier frequency of 2.4GHz and sampling frequency of 4kHz. The prototype performs to achieve the goal. (NEDO)

For efficient medical care supply systems, the R and D of advanced medical care technology and equipment largely contribute to productivity improvement for medical care services. Among them, a progress of medical care technology is becoming important for preparation of efficient and fair supply systems. MITI thus established 'Medical care and welfare equipment development project' in 1994, and has promoted the strategic long-term R and D project of medical care and welfare equipment as joint R and D project of NEDO and private enterprises. In fiscal 1998, on the development of the fine sampling/analysis system for blood, the high- precision 3-D image diagnosis system, the low-invasion operation support system, and the artificial internal organ technologies since fiscal 1996, this project clarified essential technical issues based on the future view, selected some themes to be newly developed in the future, and surveyed and evaluated the details of their R and D concretely. The operation of a 1t/d PSU (process support unit) was studied in the NEDOL coal liquefaction process. Modification was made, which involved the installation of a high-temperature/high-pressure sampling device for observing reaction and fluidity in the liquefaction reactor, a differential pressure measuring device, and a neutron attenuation-aided measuring device. Relative to coal injection, a 49.5-day and 49.3-day slurry injections were carried out using Tanito Harum coal, when impacts on the product yield and the operability of the unit were examined. A verification test was conducted for an improved hydrogenation catalyst, and liquefaction reactor characteristics were investigated. During a 19-day operation for the study of maintenance, newly installed equipment and devices were verified for function, and operating methods were probed into. In the survey of environments, characteristics were examined of the wastewater discharged from the Tanito Harum coal liquefaction process, and wastewater treatment methods were studied. The air, odor, and tar mist were examined with the PSU in operation, and the measured values were found to be below the management limits showing that its operation did not pose any problems relating to working environments. For the purpose of the improvement of coal utilization technology and environmental preservation, the paper conducted the pre-survey of the introduction of coke oven gas desulfurization facilities in China and pre-survey of potentiality of the environmentally friendly type coal utilization system in India. The pre-survey in China was made for Anyang Steel Group Co. Ltd. and Laiwu Steel Group Co. Ltd. to judge their adaptability as site for the demonstrative project on the introduction of coke oven gas desulfurization facilities. As a result, it was confirmed that the former satisfied the conditions on Japan side such as the space for installation and prospect for fund raising. However, the amount of COG treatment was larger than that planned at Japan side, and it was found that as to the recovered sulfur, the company wanted the solid sulfur different from the fused sulfur planned at Japan side. In the survey in India, explanations were made to India of CFBC and the fluidized bed cement sintering system, bio-briquette production facilities, facilities for environmental measures, coal reforming technology, etc. At the same time, the site survey was made to examine/analyze possibilities of spread/development of Japan's CCT. This paper discusses aiding means for establishing the research and development strategy for maximizing greenhouse effect gas reduction for a short period (year 2010) and an ultra long period (year 2030 and on). First, the situation surrounding the existing energy and environment technologies and technological assignments (themes) were put into order. Rough calculations were made on the selected themes as to their effect of greenhouse effect gas reduction. Based on the result of these reduction amount calculations, provisionary introduction scenarios including analyses by groups and users were prepared according to each theme. On the other hand, data groups related to the energy and environment technologies were investigated and put into order. The data groups include literatures and achievements of the past researches, and are expected of utilization for estimating the introduction potential to calculate effects of future research and development. In addition, discussions were given on methods to analyze cost-effect relationship in the energy and environment technologies. Importance was placed on the case surveys inside and outside the country, and simple models suitable for themes in the New Sunshine Project were built for an attempt of case studies. (NEDO)

Atmospheric concentration of CO2 is increasing, and discussions are urged on measures to suppress emission of CO2 into atmosphere. While different CO2 fixing technologies may be conceived, there is a technology to utilize CO2 absorbing capability of ocean by discharging and dissolving CO2 artificially into middle layer of the ocean to separate CO2 from atmosphere. This technology is one of the technologies which are promising in the aspects of technology, economic performance, and possible amount of CO2 reduction. However, it is difficult to say that scientific and technological discussions have been given sufficiently on behavior of CO2 discharged into the ocean, effect of the discharge on environments, and CO2 separation capability of the ocean. Therefore, in the present research and development, a 'technology to forecast environmental effect in areas in the vicinity of CO2 discharging points' is developed to serve for acquiring technological prospect on the feasibility to realize the CO2 ocean separation by discharging CO2 into the middle layer of the ocean. The present fiscal year has performed researches on the following research and development items: elucidation of behavior of liquefied CO2 when discharged into the ocean, CO2 feeding and diluting technologies, indoor experiments on the effects of CO2 on ocean living organisms, and development of a model to forecast environments in areas in the vicinity of CO2 discharging points. The feasibility study was conducted on a model project in Vietnam, aimed at solving the environmental pollution problems resulting from use of coal by demonstrating and disseminating the Japan's environmental technologies in the Southeast Asian countries. The feasibility study was conducted for the Cua Ong Coal Preparation Enterprise, which has the largest coal preparation capacity in Vietnam and port facilities. It is treating raw coal from 10 coal mines for classification and preparation, and shipping coal of various types that meet the standards for domestic use and export. The survey results point out that unrecovered coal remains in waste water discharged from the coal preparation plants to pollute the sea area, and that quantity of the refuse increases because of the unrecovered coal it contains. The environmental technologies needed to introduce include modification to variable wave pattern type jigging separator, refuse height measuring instrument and automatic controller, circulating heavy medium gravimeter, highly functional settling pond, and flocculent facilities.
