  2. Preparation, crystal growth, characterization, thermal and third-order nonlinear optical properties of ethyltriphenylphosphonium bis(2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)aurate(III) for all-optical switching (United States)

    Wang, X. Q.; Ren, Q.; Sun, J.; Fan, H. L.; Li, T. B.; Liu, X. T.; Zhang, G. H.; Zhu, L. Y.; Xu, D.

A novel organometallic third-order nonlinear optical crystal: ethyltriphenylphosphonium bis(2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)aurate(III) (ETPPADT) has been prepared, and large optical-quality single crystals have been grown by the solvent evaporation method. Its structural, optical and physicochemical properties are characterized by elemental analyses, UV-Vis-NIR transmission, infrared spectroscopy and thermal analysis. The thin films of ETPPADT doped into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with a concentration of 1 wt% have been prepared using spin-coating method. The linear refractive index and the thickness of the thin films were measured by a prism coupler. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of the films have been investigated using Z-scan technique at the wavelength of 1064 nm with laser duration of 20 ps, which reveal that the composited films exhibit large negative nonlinear refractive indices about 4×10 -10 esu and no nonlinear absorption. The influence of thickness of the film and the incident laser intensity on the third-order optical nonlinearities have been investigated. Two figures of merit, W and T, have been calculated to be | W|≅120≫1 and | T|=0≪1, respectively. All the results show that ETPPADT crystal has potential application on all-optical switching.

  3. Preparation, crystal structure, spectrographic characterization, thermal and third-order nonlinear optical properties of benzyltriethylammonium bis(2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)aurate(III) for all-optical switching applications (United States)

    Wang, X. Q.; Ren, Q.; Chen, J. W.; Yu, W. T.; Fang, H. L.; Li, T. B.; Cong, H. J.; Liu, X. T.; Zhu, L. Y.; Zhang, G. H.; Xu, D.

The preparation and crystal structure of a novel nonlinear optical organometallic crystal, benzyltriethylammonium bis(2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)aurate(III) (BTEAADT), are described. The crystal was characterized by elemental analyses, infrared and X-ray powder diffraction spectroscopy, thermal analysis and optical absorption. A typical highly optical quality single crystal with dimensions of about 30 × 3 × 3 mm 3 has been grown from an acetone solution by the solvent evaporation method. The specific heat of the crystal was measured to be 692.0 J mol -1 K -1 at 300 K. The thin film of BTEAADT doped into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with a concentration of 1 wt% was prepared using spin-coating method. The linear properties of the thin film were investigated by a prism coupler. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of BTEAADT doped PMMA film was investigated by using the laser Z-scan technique with 20 ps pulses at 1064 nm. A large negative nonlinear refraction and no nonlinear absorption have been observed. The refractive index and the thickness of the film are 1.4682 and 1.15 μm, respectively. The nonlinear refractive index is calculated to be -3.978 × 10 -15m 2/W for the film. At the same time, the nonlinear absorption coefficient is 0. Two figures of merit, W and T of the film, were calculated to be |W| = 1.07 > 1, |T| = 0 optical switching.

Wearing hijab is an obligation for every Muslim woman, as clearlystated in the Qur'an. Hijab is defined as a wide veil that women use to coverthe aurat (covering head and neck down to thechest). It is believed that the correct use of hijab brings benefits and virtues to the wearers, especially inits religious attitudes and behavior. Thus, wearing hijab is a representationof religiosity. Religiosity can be interpreted as the degree of attachment of aperson to the religion and gives a posi...

  5. Scarred for life: The impact of the Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention Act of 2010 on addressing violence against women in Pakistan

    von Werlhof, Emily

This article uses the Pakistani Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention Act of 2010 (Act of 2010) as an example to discuss the use of ad hoc legislation on issues of violence against women in Pakistan. From 2008 to 2011, the Aurat Foundation reported that 158 acid attacks occurred in Pakistan. While one remedy for the victims of acid attacks may be to see their attackers punished, a lasting remedy would be to ensure this type of horrific attack does not happen to anyone else. This article exam...

  6. Ethographic ubiquity: original fake, expanded codex, transurban subject, performative doll

Full Text Available My essay presents the emerging of fake as a concept that does not mean false, but a post-dualistic mix of false/truth. The relation between digital culture and ubiquitous subjectivity is fundamental during its process; in the same way, the relation between aura and reproducibility cannot be determined dialectically as Benjamin did. Digital auratic reproducibility is the contemporary context and communicational metropolis is characterized by spontaneous and public performance: so, my conclusion is an analysis of some “living” doll and their uncanny presence.

The authors made an experimental study of the efficiency of water purification procedures based on the combined use of active chlorine and coagulants and hygienically evaluated the procedures. The study included the evaluation of water disinfection with various coagulants and active chlorine; the investigation of the processes of production of deleterious organic chlorine compounds; the assessment of the quality of water after its treatment. The coagulants representing aluminum polyoxychloride: RAX-10 (AQUA-AURATE 10) and RAX-18 (AQUA-AURATE 18), and aluminum sulfate, technically pure grade were tested. The treatment of river water with the coagulants RAX-10 and RAX-18, followed by precipitation, filtration, and chlorination under laboratory conditions, was shown to result in water disinfection to the levels complying with the requirements described in SanPiN RAX-18 showed the best disinfecting activity against total and heat-tolerant coliform bacteria, but also to the highly chlorine-resistant microrganisms--the spores of sulfite-reducing Clostridia, phages, and viruses. Since the coagulants have an increased sorptive capacity relative to humus and other organic substances, substitution of primary chlorination for coagulant treatment may induce a reduction in the risk of formation of oncogenically and mutagenically hazardous chlorinated hydrocarbons.

  10. Ligand substitution reactions and cytotoxic properties of [Au(L)Cl2](+) and [AuCl2(DMSO)2]+ complexes (L=ethylenediamine and S-methyl-l-cysteine). (United States)

Milovanović, Marija; Djeković, Ana; Volarević, Vladislav; Petrović, Biljana; Arsenijević, Nebojsa; Bugarcić, Zivadin D

We have studied the kinetics of the complex formation of gold(III) complexes, [AuCl(2)(en)](+) (dichlorido(ethylenediamine)aurate(III)-ion) and [AuCl(2)(SMC)] (dichlorido (S-methyl-l-cysteine)aurate(III)) with four biologically N-donor nucleophiles. It was shown that studied ligands have a high affinity for gold(III) complex, which may have important biological implications, since the interactions of Au(III) with DNA is thought to be responsible for the anti-tumour activity. The [AuCl(2)(SMC)] complex is more reactive than [AuCl(2)(en)](+). L-His reacts faster than the other N-donor nucleophiles in the reaction with [AuCl(2)(en)](+), but in the reaction with [AuCl(2)(SMC)] 5'-GMP is the best nucleophile. Gold(III) complexes are much more reactive than Pt(II) complexes with the same nucleophiles. The activation parameters for all studied reactions suggest an associative substitution mechanism. The cytotoxicity of gold(III) complexes, [AuCl(2)(en)](+), [AuCl(2)(SMC)] and [AuCl(2)(DMSO)(2)](+) was evaluated in vitro against chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells, obtained from blood of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The [AuCl(2)(en)](+) complex show comparable cytotoxicity profiles compared to cisplatin. Copyright (c) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Full Text Available The development of era demands muslimahs to take roles without leaving their identities. When they became career women, they were asked to work outside their houses. How if the women want to keep their faith and obey the Islamic rules by keeping their aurat with jilbab (veil? Will jilbab disturb their activities when working? How if their working environments do not accept them? The paper discusses the relationship between the activities of women with hijab and their adaptation by analyzing Fatins Hijab Diary. With Scheiders analysis, it can be concluded that Fatin Shidqia Lubis, as an entertainer and public figure has conducted the adaptation process toward her working environment in order to be exist in it without leaving her identity as a muslimah who holds the hijabs principals. The process that has been successfully passed by Fatin shows that jilbab is not an obstruction for women who want to work and be famous.

  12. Geminally diaurated aryls bridged by semirigid phosphine pillars: syntheses and electronic structure. (United States)

Browne, Amberle R; Deligonul, Nihal; Anderson, Bryce L; Rheingold, Arnold L; Gray, Thomas G

Geminally diaurated μ2 -aryl complexes have been prepared where gold(I) centers were bridged by the semirigid diphosphine ligands bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether (DPEphos) and 4,6-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)dibenzo[b,d]furan (DBFphos). Diaurated complexes were synthesized in ligand redistribution reactions of the corresponding di-gold dichlorides with di-gold diaryls (six of them new) and silver(I) salts. Diaurated complexes were isolated as salts of the minimally coordinating anions SbF6 (-) and ReO4 (-). Efforts to prepare salts of the tetraarylborate [B(3,5-(CF3)2 C6 H3)4](-) led to transmetalation from boron, with crystallization of the fluorinated aryl complex. The new complexes were characterized by multinuclear NMR, absorption and emission spectroscopies, 77 K emission lifetimes, and by combustion analysis; three are crystallographically characterized. Structures of geminally diaurated aryl ligands are compared to those of mono-aurated analogues. Both crystal structures and density-functional theory calculations indicate slight but observable disruptions of aryl ligand aromaticity by geminal di-gold binding. An intermolecular aurophilic interaction in one structurally authenticated complex was examined computationally. © 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

  13. Pagbalangkas sa Arkitekturang Filipino: Alternatibong Kritikal na Tema sa Historyograpiyang Arkitektural

Full Text Available There is a need to restudy and reframe the methodologies we use to present the history of Filipino Architecture. The paper is rooted in the idea that the current approach to historiography of Filipino architecture renders architecture itself irrelevant and detached from the students of architectural history. Postcoloniality is seen here as a conscious break from traditional notions of historiography and a means of empowerment for the marginalized. In Filipino Architecture, this implies a non-elitist and anti-auratic approach in looking at architecture. Furthermore, there is also a shift in looking at architecture not just as mere products, but more importantly as a process. In lieu of the popular diachronic-historic approach to architectural history writing, a synchronic-thematic system is proposed. To understand further the relevance of architecture to the lives of the Filipino, five critical themes were proposed as alternative ways of looking at architecture. The themes are: Architecture as Signifier of Places and Settings; Architecture as a Mode of Signifying Meaning; Architecture as Process of Creativity; Architecture as Adaptation and Adjustment to the Environment; and Architecture as Sites of Power Relations. With these critical themes, Filipino architecture is seen as a means of empowering the Filipino instead of being the source of oppression.

  14. Monumentality and public space in Lourenço Marques in the 1930 and 1940

    Gerbert Verheij

Full Text Available Lourenço Marques, actual Maputo (Mozambique, is subjected to a series of aesthetic interventions in its public space during the 1930s e 1940s. These seek to “monumentalize” and “portugalize” the city, responding to its recently acquired status as capital of the Colony. Two monuments appear as especially important and exemplary: the Padrão de Guerra, a lately built First War memorial (1935, and the monument to the hero of the “pacification campaigns” of the 1890s, Mouzinho de Albuquerque (1940. Around these monuments, a large number of commemorative and celebrative practices are developed. Such practices posit the monument as a “national allegory” and reproduce, in the context of a modern city, auratic and cult values. As such, they add an important dimension to the monument’s role in the authoritarian reformulation of the city’s public space as an “imperial” space, as well as in the putative hegemonization of the representations of the community imagined as a “Nation”. They allow, therefore, to approach the political-ideological use and utility of the monument within the organization of public space.

  15. Diversity in Gold Finger Structure Elucidated by Traveling-Wave Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry. (United States)

Du, Zhifeng; de Paiva, Raphael E F; Nelson, Kristina; Farrell, Nicholas P

Traveling wave ion mobility (TWIM) mass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful method for the structural and conformational analysis of proteins and peptides, enabling the differentiation of isomeric peptides (or proteins) that have the same sequence but are modified at different residues. In this study, the TWIM-MS technique was used to separate isomeric AuI metallopeptide ions that were formed by ZnII displacement from the parent zinc fingers (ZFs). The synthetic gold finger peptides were derived from the C-terminus of the HIV nucleocapsid p7 protein (NCp7-F2) and finger 3 of the Sp1 transcription factor (Sp1-F3). TWIM-MS enabled the acquisition of distinct product ion spectra for each isomer, clearly indicating the binding sites for the major conformers in the presence of multiple coordination possibilities. Collision cross-section measurements showed that the aurated peptide has a slightly more compact structure than the parent zinc compound NCp7-F2, which showed only one conformation. © 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. 16. Petyarre and Moffat: 'Looking from the Sky'

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Linnell Secomb

Full Text Available Moffatt’s Up in the Sky series draws attention to the relation between sky and earth, through the content and camera angles of the images. Similarly, Kathleen Petyarre’s Central Desert acrylic dot painting evokes this relation representing country and Dreaming from a celestial perspective—as she says ‘looking from the sky’. Yet here any association between these artists seems to end with the urban artist refusing to engage Aboriginal tradition and the desert artist focused on Dreaming, country and heritage. However, a further connection between these disparate works may also be discerned as each, in differing ways, transforms our conventional perceptions of space and time. Reading these images in relation to Walter Benjamin’s concepts of the auratic and of messianic time, I suggest that each restructures dimension and duration putting in question the (postmodern calibrations of our space/time experience. This paper stages an engagement between these artists’ works and Benjamin’s concepts exploring the variations and modifications of the spatial and the temporal that hybrid cross-cultural exchanges require and facilitate.

  17. Engineering of poly(ethylene glycol chain-tethered surfaces to obtain high-performance bionanoparticles

Full Text Available A poly(ethylene glycol-b-poly[2-(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate] block copolymer possessing a reactive acetal group at the end of the poly(ethylene glycol (PEG chain, that is, acetal-PEG-b-PAMA, was synthesized by a proprietary polymerization technique. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs were prepared using the thus-synthesized acetal-PEG-b-PAMA block copolymer. The PEG-b-PAMA not only acted as a reducing agent of aurate ions but also attached to the nanoparticle surface. The GNPs obtained had controlled sizes and narrow size distributions. They also showed high dispersion stability owing to the presence of PEG tethering chains on the surface. The same strategy should also be applicable to the fabrication of semiconductor quantum dots and inorganic porous nanoparticles. The preparation of nanoparticles in situ, i.e. in the presence of acetal-PEG-b-PAMA, gave the most densely packed polymer layer on the nanoparticle surface; this was not observed when coating preformed nanoparticles. PEG/polyamine block copolymer was more functional on the metal surface than PEG/polyamine graft copolymer, as confirmed by angle-dependent x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We successfully solubilized the C60 fullerene into aqueous media using acetal-PEG-b-PAMA. A C60/acetal-PEG-b-PAMA complex with a size below 5 nm was obtained by dialysis. The preparation and characterization of these materials are described in this review.

  19. Algunas reflexiones desde la acuarela de Mario Conde

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

Full Text Available This brief reflection on the work of Mario Conde starts paying attention to the special relationship the artist has with the watercolor technique, deploying from that relationship a copy-based ethics. From that materiality Conde builds his response to the postmodern moment in which art in general, and particularly Bolivian art, is been developed given its current social conditions. The ethics of the copy is explored especially in two of his works: "Exterminator Angel" where  copying addresses colonial issues that return to question and challenge the very notion of homeland, and "Drunk with power (Géricault in Los Andes" where the copy,  adapted to Andean latitudes, exudes a desire to restore the sacred and  auratic character of artwork as well as of the Andean imagery.

  20. The Vanished Child: An inquiry into figures and their modes of appearance

Full Text Available Sophie Calle's texts are elaborate devices that facilitate the production of figures, of complex symbolic entities. In fact, her work enables us to better understand how figures emerge and unfold in the imaginary. Thus, we find in her Disparitions (Disappearances, a startling figure, which we can name the "Vanished Child". I will present this figure and explain how it stems from the description of a painting by Rembrandt, stolen at the Gardner Museum in Boston. I will start by identifying some of the essential processes implied in the identification of a figure, and, to do so, I will give two short examples, drawn from Witold Gombrowicz and Don DeLillo. Then, after having described in details the figure of the Vanished Child, I will argue, following the French art historian Georges Didi-Huberman in his reading of Walter Benjamin, that figures are auratic objects.
