  1. Production of energy and chemical substances by microalgae. Bisai morui ni yoru energy oyobi kagaku busshitsu no seisan

Miyamoto, Kazuhisa; Miura, Yoshiharu (Osaka Univ., Osaka, (Japan). Faculty of Pharamaceutical Science)

Microalgae can fix carbon dioxide by photosynthesis but the conversion rate is only 5 to 6%. Dried algae contain different lipids of 20 to 40%. Therfore, it is desirable to culture a large amount of an alga or algae having high photosynthetic and lipid producing abilities in order to effectively convert photoenergy to liquid fuel. It is reported that US established the target of 50g dry wt/m{sup 2}/day by greatly improving the productivity for 4 years since 1982 and the lipid amount exceeded 60% in 1986. A method to make photosysnthesis during daytime to avoid the interference with oxygen and to generate hydrogen by decomposing stored organic substances during night is studied and regarded as promising. In addition, the production of vitamines and other fine chemicals by microalgae is also paid attention. 15 refs., 5 tabs., 3 tabs.

Kobayashi, M.; Tsuji, Y. (Higashimaru Shoyu Co. Ltd., Hyogo (Japan)); Kakizono, T.; Nagai, S. (Hiroshima Univ. (Japan). Faculty of Engineering)

Astaxanthin (3,3[prime]-dihydroxy-[beta],[beta]-carotene-4,4[prime]-dione) is a red carotenoid dye present in aquatic organisms such as crustacea and fish, and has a close relationship with the manifestation of colors of the bodies and meat of these organisms. Astaxanthin is currently used as a color-enhancing agent for cultivated fish such as red sea bream, rainbow trout, and salmon. Recently, astaxanthin has been found to be a much stronger antioxidant than [beta]-carotene or [alpha]-tocophenol, and its application to foods and pharmaceuticals is expected. In this article, studies by the authors on Haematococcus pluvialis, one of the most promising microorganisms as a source of producing astaxanthin, are described as an example of production of useful carotenoids using minute algae, and are compared with Dunaliella, as a [beta]-carotene producing microorganism, which is already produced commercially. 1 fig., 1 tab.

  4. FY 1998 annual report on the research on the possibility of introducing a usable chemical substance manufacturing system by utilizing natural gas containing CO2; CO{sub 2} gan'yu tennen gas den katsuyo ni yoru yuyo kagaku busshitsu seizo system donyu kanosei ni kansuru chosa kenkyu 1998 nendo chosa hokokusho

The trends of effective use of gas containing CO2 from natural gas fields are surveyed, and usable chemical substance manufacturing systems which utilize natural energy are investigated, evaluated and analyzed, to extract promising systems for effective use of CO2-containing natural gas and thereby to promote its effective use. Chapter 1 outlines possibility of integrated use of gas containing CO2 from natural gas fields and natural gas energy. Chapter 2 describes the research trends in the CO2 conversion reactions for using unexploited CO2 as the carbon source. Chapter 3 describes natural energy utilization technology applicable to gas containing CO2 from natural gas fields. Chapter 4 describes performance of chemical manufacturing systems utilizing natural gas containing CO2. The energy balances and CO2 emission coefficients are estimated, based on the above. The evaluation is implemented in the order of (1) conventional steam reforming, (2) steam reforming in which heat is supplied by a solar furnace, (3) examination of the exhaust gases from a methanol synthesis process, and (4) examination of CO2-mixed reforming. Chapter 5 describes summary and proposals. (NEDO)

  5. Oxygen uptake, heartrate and blood lactate responses to the Chito-Ryu Seisan kata in skilled karate practitioners.

    Zehr, E P; Sale, D G

To evaluate the efficacy of Seisan kata as an aerobic power training mode, four male (28.5 +/- 4.2 y) Chito-Ryu karate black belt practitioners did kata continuously for 10 min. In separate sessions the kata (formal, organized movement sequences) were done at rates of 1 (PACE) and 2 (FAST) kata "cycles" per minute. Heartrate (HR) and VO2 were monitored continuously during the sessions. VO2 during the PACE and FAST sessions averaged 73 +/- 3 and 94 +/- 2% of leg cycling VO2peak, respectively. The corresponding HRs were 93 +/- 6 and 101 +/- 3% of HRmax (leg cycle test). PACE and FAST post-exercise blood lactates were 12 +/- 4 and 22 +/- 6%, respectively, of the maximal leg cycle test values. These data indicate that karate kata can be used as an effective and specific means for training aerobic power in karate practitioners.

  6. Fiscal 1998 achievement report on regional consortium research and development project. Regional consortium of venture business fostering type--Creation of key industries (Development of technologies for manufacturing and utilizing various biological regulatory substances using Hokkaido-produced biomasses as materials); 1998 nendo Dosan biomass wo genryo to shita kakushu seitai chosetsu kino busshitsu no seisan riyo gijutsu kaihatsu seika hokokusho

The efforts aim to meet consumers' needs for products that will prevent lifestyle diseases or the like. For this purpose, substances answering the purpose are extracted from Hokkaido-produced agricultural and aquatic biomasses, and prepared for testing. Researches are conducted on how they behave in the enzyme, cell, and biological systems, and active substances are isolated and identified. In relation to the aquatic biomass, a technology is established of extracting and separating DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), taurine, etc., which are multivalent unsaturated fatty acids effective in preventing lifestyle diseases, from the unused parts of the squid. In relation to the agricultural biomass, antimicrobial active substances are extracted and separated from small fruit plants such as the chicory. Long-keeping foods are tentatively produced by the addition of dried powder of the chicory root tuber. In the elucidation of various biological regulatory substances contained in the Hokkaido-produced biomasses, they are tested for their abilities to resist microbes and active oxygen. Furthermore, verification tests are conducted by administering the substances to the senescence-accelerated mouse (SAM). (NEDO)

  7. Indoor air pollution by particulate matter; Ryushijo busshitsu ni yoru osen

Irie, T. [Shinshu Univ., Nagano (Japan). Faculty of Education

This paper explains the standards and the purport of the law for maintenance of sanitation in buildings, the outbreak of sickness relating to the sick-building syndrome and its countermeasures, etc., in connection with particulate matters in the indoor environment. The law of 1970 specified 0.15mg/m{sup 3} as the standard of indoor maintenance control for suspended particulate matters. As a number of data were subsequently accumulated, however, it was revealed that tobacco smoke particles were the very cause of the indoor particulate pollution though it was unpredicted at the beginning. As a result, it led to the development of high level filters, improvement of air conditioning operation, measures for smoking, and so on, for which the regulation of 0.15mg/m{sup 3} has been believed to be correct after all. The most frequently disqualified item was particulate matters at the initial enforcement of the law, but the moisture standard has been ranked first in recent years. The problems of tobacco smoke, asbestos and allergens are particularly to be watched among many problems involved. 10 refs., 2 figs., 3 tabs.

  8. Removal of trihalomethane precursors in industrial wastewater; Sangyo haisui ni fukumareru trihalomethane zenku busshitsu no jokyo

Machida, K.; Tsuda, S. [Ebara Corp., Tokyo (Japan); Kiriyama, K.; Hidaka, T. [Ebara Research Co. Ltd., Kanagawa (Japan)

As part of a study on `a technology to treat wastewater from tap water sources` commissioned from NEDO, operation research was carried out on a demonstration plant (50 m {sup 3}/d) built with an intention to remove trihalomethane precursors (abbreviated to THMFP) contained in wasterwater from a paper mill. As a result, the following findings were obtained: an activated sludge treatment can remove THMFP at a removal rate of 10%, succeeding precipitation treatment 37%, and a further activated charcoal treatment or a membrane (nano-filtration (NF)) treatment 84% to 93%, resulting in the remaining THMFP of 0.3 mg per liter or less. CHCl3 precursor materials can be removed well by any treatment process, but bromine-coordinated THMFP is removed well by the NF treatment. Because THMFP quantification of wastewater with high total organic carbon (TOC) concentration is largely affected by dilution rate, discussions were given on the dilution rate, whereas it was found adequate that test samples be diluted so that the TOC will be 1 to 3 mg per liter. 3 refs., 7 figs., 8 tabs.

  9. Problem on environmental hormone (endocrine disturbing chemicals); Kankyo horumon (naibunpi kakuran kagaku busshitsu) mondai ni tsuite

Tawarada, T. [Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc., Osaka (Japan)

This paper describes a problem on environmental hormone. Various chemicals discharged into environment act as hormone- like or anti-hormone-like substance. Since many such chemicals act as female hormone-like substance, those are called '(exogenous) endocrine disturbing chemicals' or 'environmental hormone'. Such chemicals include already regulated toxic PCB and dioxin, and a large amount of plastic raw materials, plasticizer and surfactant with no acute toxicity. The action mechanism of endocrine disturbing chemicals is as follows. Those bond with acceptors in place of hormone, and give incorrect directions to genes. Those may cause various disorders such as reproduction anomaly, development anomaly, immune toxicity and neuro-toxicity over several ages. For wild animals, some conceivable effects are being revealed. Since living organisms have various specificities and various experiments possible for animals are impossible for mankind, many obscure points remain unsolved. This paper presents various approaches in Japan. (NEDO)

  10. Material cycling solar system modeled ecosystem; Seitaikei wo model to shita busshitsu junkangata solar system

Sato, M. [Hachinohe Institute of Technology, Aomori (Japan)

It is proposed to establish an integrated system close to a natural ecosystem for an industrial complex, taking that in Hachinohe City, Aomori Pref. as the conceptual site. It is a system in which materials are recycled by solar energy and industrial waste heat for a complex food industry. The conceptual site, although blessed with various marine products, are sometimes attacked by cold weather. Waste heat from a 250,000kW power plant, if transported by EHD heat pipes to the site, could provide roughly 400 times the heat required for production of agricultural and marine products, such as cabbages and fish meat. The waste heat, coupled with solar energy, should solve the problems resulting from hot waste water, if they could be utilized for the industrial purposes. The food industrial site that produces agricultural and marine products is considered to be suited as the center of the solar industrial complex incorporating farms. 5 refs., 3 figs.

  11. Leading research on next generation metal production technology; Jisedai kinzoku shigen seisan gijutsu no sendo kenkyu

The energy saving environment-friendly technology for low- grade difficult-to-process ores was researched focusing attention on the hydro-metallurgical process of non-ferrous metals. This research aims at development of both effective leaching system of metals, and separation/crystallization system recognizing the property difference between metal ions in solution. The leaching system allows the inexpensive molecular level control of electron transfer, mass transfer of metal ions and stabilization of leached metal ions in a solid/liquid interface. The system thus allows selective leaching of metals from various resources such as difficult- to-leach sulfide minerals to prepare concentrated solutions. The separation system can obtain high-purity solutions including each metal ion by advanced separation/concentration technology from the solutions. The crystallization technology (including electrolysis) is developed for preparing target metal materials by molecular level control of nucleation, particle growth, thin film formation and bulky metal formation processes. Overall energy consumption is reduced to 1/3 of that of the pyro-metallurgical method, aiming at zero emission. 15 refs., 14 figs., 11 tabs.

  12. Production of biopolymers from carbon dioxide. Tansan gas kara no bio polymer no seisan

Ishizaki, A. (Kyushu University, Fukuoka (Japan). Faculty of Agriculture)

This paper describes biopolymers made from CO2 that contribute to global preservation. PHB that is generated in the processes of CO2 fermentation and protein production from microorganisms draws attention as a useful biopolymer. Biological synthesis requires energy to synthesize the composing materials therein. Organisms are divided into the independent type and the subordinate type depending on how the energy is acquired. The independent type organism is of CO2 self-reducing type, so to speak, and produces organic matters. When hydrogen oxidizing bacteria, A. eutrophus, is cultured under an independent nutrient condition, energy derived from the hydrogen oxidation proliferates the bacteria and produces PHB. However, this fermentation method has a substantially different difficulty. It requires a huge reactor with a large gas migration capacity coefficient, on which the PHB production depends entirely. Other CO2 biopolymer production methods under study include effective utilization of biomass during photosynthetic processes by using plants incorporated with PHB biosynthesized genes, and production of polylactic acid, a biodegradable polymer. 9 refs., 3 figs.

    Kamon, M.

The production of crude oil was started even in Japan from the nineteenth century to the twentieth century beginning in Niigata Prefecture, and the real petroleum industry was produced. The production has been started even in Akita Prefecture in the age in Taisho and Showa. The petroleum industry in Japan developed from the comparatively old like this. However, it is not very much known generally. Because of the oil of output is fewer than an amount of import from foreign countries. This paper describes oil gas rice pad in Japan and the production situation. (NEDO)

  14. Mitsubishi chemistry: Spreading of carbon business in China; Kasseitan. Chugoku seisan wo kakudai

Mitsubishi chemistry strengthens the overseas development of activated carbon business. The matter that this rank worked from October is received, and activated carbon equipment of Shanshi expands global development. The policy that joint company establishment in China and the annual production that it hits present double as that part after 2001 build a system 10000 tons. The case that a headquarters area is secured in Asia recently is on the increase in activated carbon manufacturer. Regardless of the coconut tree shell and the coal, a reason is because it is favorable on the cost side. After having secured it, a production position is turned to the world market in China of the raw material location, and Mitsubishi chemistry works for the product extreme development. On the other hand, high value added development is taken about the domestic position, and a role assignment is defined. (translated by NEDO)

  15. Automotive technology. ; Production engineering and production system. Jidosha gijutsu. ; Seisan gijutsuter dot system

Miki, T. (Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd., Osaka (Japan))

Japanese automotive industry grew stably through the year of 1989, sustained by favorable domestic demands, and recorded the historically highest production of 13.03 million cars (2.6% up compared with the previous year). Also, newly-designed cars appeared on the market successively, aiming at improving the marketability of automobiles. In the aspect of production engineering, in order to meet the users' needs and preferences, the use of aluminum and plastic materials for car bodies and the application of engineering plastics to such functional parts as intake manifolds and springs have advanced, and the technology of precision mechanical work, forging, sintering and the like for high strength materials has also progressed. Moreover, the application of surface treated steel sheets and plastics for preventing rust as well as plastic painting matching with car designs has increased. In respect of production lines, as the variety of car types has increased corresponding to the diversified users' preferences, utilization of the flexible manufacturing system, which can readily change the types of cars on the production line, has spread extensively so as to improve the efficiency of mixed production lines. Also being pursued is computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) as a production marketing integrated system to reduce the lead time for production. 26 refs.

Mochizuki, T.; Sato, H.; Masuda, Y.; Onikubo, I.; Nagaoka, T. (Numazu Industrial Research Institute of Shizuoka Prefecture, Shizuoka (Japan))

The fault tree method is used recently as a representative method to operate more efficiently the flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) becoming increasingly larger in scale and more complex and evaluate the system safety and reliability in design stages. This paper describes attempts to analyze FMS safety using the method. The fault tree method pursuits summit events and important anomalies in an object system retroactively along the cause direction, and links anomalies to causes using such logic gates as and-gate and or-gate. The model structure of an FMS comprises automatic warehouses, unmanned transportation vehicles, NC lathes, machining centers, robots and stations, centrally controlled by a computer. Failures in the constituting components are dealt with hardwares and softwares given safety redundancy and programs. Since the trees are for cause factors derived from empirical failures, not all of abnormal events can be handled with the present status of the method. Future requirements may include component failure processing functions and bypass processing in the softwares for the FMS. 5 refs., 6 figs.

Miyamoto, K.; Nasu, M.; Hashimoto, C.; Tanaka, K.; Hirata, M. [Osaka University, Osaka (Japan). Faculty of Pharmaceutial Science; Fujita, M.; Takagi, M. [Osaka University, Osaka (Japan). Faculty of Engineering; Hirata, Y.; Taya, M. [Osaka University, Osaka (Japan). Faculty of Engineering Science; Yamanishi, H. [Osaka University, Osaka (Japan). Faculty of Medicine

This paper describes the technology development by which biomass is produced by treatment of pollutants using microalgae, and is recycled. A bioreactor system has been developed, in which microalgal biomass can be obtained through the effective treatment of CO2 and NOx using microalgae having ability of increase under the severe condition with simultaneous flow of CO2 and NOx. A new method has been also developed for separating and recovering the microalgae. Materials, such as glucose, glycerol, acetic acid, and lactic acid, were produced from the obtained biomass through physico-chemical and biological treatments. These materials can be converted into ethanol and hydrogen. For this treatment and recycling system, functions as a part of natural material recycling were considered to be most significant. Development of an analysis and evaluation method of an impact of this system on the natural environment is also tried. 1 fig.

  18. Preventive counterplan for chemical poisonings and the role of toxicology; Kagaku busshitsu chudoku jiko taisaku to dokubutsugaku

Yoshida, T. [Showa Univ., Tokyo (Japan). School of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Some cases of poisoning by chemical substances are taken up, and counterplans are discussed. This report centers about the neurotoxic gas sarin incidents dealing with them as examples of acute poisoning caused by chemical substances. The important difference in terms of chemical structure between a neurotoxic gas and organo-phosphoric pesticide is that in the former phosphorus is directly bonded with carbon or halogen while, in the latter, bondage is represented by P-O-C, P-S-C, and the like, so bonded as to form the phosphoric acid, thiophosphoric acid, or dithiophosphoric acid. The result of the difference in chemical structure is that the neurotoxic gas easily gains access to the target enzyme and remains stable after bonding therewith while the organo-phosphoric pesticide is easily hydrolyzed by enzymes other than the target enzyme. Poisoning by neurotoxic gas or organo-phosphoric pesticide is clinically treated by the administration of atropine and 2-pyridine aldoxime methiodide which is an antidote. It is mandatory to let people clearly know beforehand the methods of analysis of chemical substances and their toxicity and to establish beforehand how to first-aid the victims and what emergency treatment can be executed. 11 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.

  19. Studies on physicochemical mechanism of hot water injection. ; Studies on optimum production technique of geothermal fluid. Nessui no seisan kangen ni kansuru kenkyu. ; Nessui no saiteki seisan shuho no kaihatsu

Nakamura, H.; Takahashi, M.; Hanano, M.; Hirako, Y. (Japan Metals and chemicals Co. Ltd., Tokyo (Japan)); Itoi, R. (Kyushu Univ., Fukuoka (Japan). Faculty of Engineering)

In order to appropriately produce geothermal fluid, evaluation method was developed of reservoir, at each of the survey, development and production stages, as a serial part of Sunshine Project by the NEDO. For the production of thermal water and steam from the reservoir, evaluation must be appropriately and flexibly made of, among others, geothermal fluid supply capacity from the surroundings, interval between wells, against-time ratio of lowering in production well capacity, number of production wells, influence of reduced thermal water, and location and ratio of reduction. At the survey stage, it is good to generally analyze information, as also not voluminous, by a lumped parameter model. At the development stage from drilling as far as the production of thermal water, it is good to use a grid model, able to take the fracture, as well as the two-dimensional and three-dimensional distributions, into a particular consideration. Regarding how to make the grid division, the model comprises the wellfield model, to express one drilled well as one grid in locative region, of which the surroundings are to be divided by blocks, and well-by-well method, to locate one drilled well at one grid. At the production stage, data on well-by-well basis are important and the well-by-well method is accordingly the most important. 3 refs., 6 figs., 3 tabs.

  20. Batch process. Flexible paint production system using movable tanks; Idoso wo mochiita toryo no flexible seisan system

Yamashita, S. [Kansai Paint Co. Ltd., Hiratsuka, Kanagawa (Japan). Central Lab.

In the paint manufacturing industry, there are many kinds of product depending on the use, and there are few kinds of paint which can be manufactured by a large facility capable of producing several tens of kL of paint. An average working ratio of facility in this industry is limited to between 60 to 70%, and the ratio of the personnel expense to the cost has recently increased. The changing to an FMS (Flexible Manufacturing System) for increasing the working ratio of the facility and the changing of the system to greatly improve the operation efficiency have been demanded. The concrete means for these requirements include changing the facility to a pipeless one. The paint manufacturing facility comprises four sections, i.e. a premixing section, dispersing section, mixing section and canning section. If the mixing tank is made movable and the equipment on the preceding and succeeding stages of the mixing tank is made pipeless, the facility can be changed to the one not substantially restricted by the quality of products from the dispersing section to the filtration section which can be formed. However, the drawbacks of this system include the following: a failure, if it occurs, influences the whole production line; learning the system operating method requires much time, causing many initial failure occur; and great expansion of the facility is difficult. 2 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.

Tanisho, S.; Fujii, Y. [Yokohama National Univ. (Japan). Faculty of Engineering

This writer, aiming at hydrogen production by fermentation using biomass, has studied production from various carbohydrates, organic acids and alcohols by using Enterobacter aerogenes strain E.82005 which bacterium was picked from leaves of four-o`clock and has high ability of hydrogen production. This bacterium being facultative anaerobic, it need not intercept O2, and the gas generated from its common culture solution which contains inorganic ingredients (YNOB3), peptone and glucose was composed of only H2 and CO2. As the tests for kitchen garbage, from each garbage of apples, oranges, bananas and spinage, H2 were obtained at the rate of 0.51, 0.27, 0.09 and 0.15 m mol/g respectively. Guts of fishes, tofu, tofu-refuse and eggs were alternative nitrogen sources of peptone. Especially, miso, soy sauce and soybean flour were very good substrates for hydrogen production as well as good nitrogen sources. 7 refs., 6 figs., 3 tabs.

  2. Geothermal reservoir engineering. 6. Reservoir simulation (2) performance prediction; Chinetsu choryuso kogaku. 6. Choryuso simulation (2) seisan yosoku

Ishido, T. [Geological Survey of Japan, Tsukuba (Japan)

A production estimating simulation is conducted when determining a power generation scale, by using a reservoir model in natural state as an initial condition. In order to establish plans for production and injection and estimate additional well drilling in the future, an estimating simulation by each well is effective, where different scenarios are compared and discussed by using sensitivity analysis. The production estimating simulation calculates reservoir behavior after liquid production using the natural state model as an initial condition. Suppose a case of continuing necessary steam production for 30 years assuming the power generation amount as 20 MWe. Three production wells may be used, a casing program and production indexes are given to each well, and the relationship between flow rate and pressure at well opening is derived by varying pressure and enthalpy of the feed point in a conceivable range prior to performing the estimating calculation. In determining a production scale, the production estimating simulation is performed on each well regarding different production and injection scenarios in addition to the sensitivity analysis on uncertain parameters. 4 refs., 14 figs., 2 tabs.

  3. Japansese style production system developing as world model; Sekai no moderu ka shitsutsu aru Nihon teki seisan system

Ikeda, M. [Chuo Univ., Tokyo (Japan). Faculty of Economist

Limiting production system to the relationship of finished product makers with part makers and subcontract enterprises, the actual state of introduction of Japanese style production system to European and American enterprises is introduced. The competitive export power of Japan has been supported not only by large enterprises assembling finished products but also by the characteristic relationship between large enterprises with part makers and subcontractors. Automobile industry is taken up for study as an example, and the production rate of the finished makers, numbers of part makers and subcontractors, business relation between finished product makers and part makers, and design and development system for parts are discussed. Full-scale introduction of Japanese production system began in Europe and America in the 1990`s with the automobile industry taking the lead in the introduction, producing excellent results steadily. A new movement is in progress in a part of the cost reduction and rationalization activity which the Japanese automobile industry is now tackling, and it may be expected that the Japanese production system will hold a dominant position for a fairly long time.

  4. Estimation for origin of coals on biomaker analysis; Jinko sekitan oyobi tennen sekitan no biomaker bunseki ni yoru sekitan kigen busshitsu no suitei

Suzuki, Y. [Geological Survey of Japan, Tsukuba (Japan); Sugimoto, Y. [National Institute of Materials and Chemical Research, Tsukuba (Japan); Okada, K. [Coal Mining Research Center, Tokyo (Japan)

In order to study coal production processes, an estimation study was carried out on coal originating materials by using biomaker analysis. Test samples are original coals collected directly from a mine in Hokkaido (not having been subjected cleaning). Mixing and solvent extraction were performed after pulverization, and then tests were given on saturated hydrocarbon components divided by using a silicagel column chromatograph for the present study. It can be known from n-alkane distribution in the coal that low molecular alkane increases with increasing degree of coalification. Artificial coal made by wet-heating Metasequoia leaves contains only little n-alkane. Diterpenoid compound exists in the Taiheiyo and Akabira coals. Tetra-cyclic diterpernoid is contained abundantly in subtropical coniferous trees, serving as a parameter for warm environment. The compound is contained also in the Fushun coal, but not in Indonesian coals. Hopanoid constitution shows very high similarity, but H/C atomic ratio may vary largely even if the coalification is at the same degree. This is likely to be caused from difference in originating materials. Hopanoids are bacteria attributed substances, whose activities are not affected by the originating materials. 2 figs., 1 tab.

Higashino, H. [Agency of Industrial Science and Technology, Tokyo (Japan)

In order to consider how to cope with problems of great-sphere air pollution in the East Asia such as acid rain, etc., it is required to investigate the real conditions of emitted air pollutants and to develop a transfer model which clarify the relation between emissions and depositions. This paper describes the present state of studies on the amount of estimated air pollutive emissions in the East Asia and estimated depositions by transfer models. Typical studies on estimated grid-by-grid distribution of emissions in the East Asia are explained first and other estimated examples, i.e. data announced by the Chinese Government and etc., air also referred. The models developed for estimating acidic pollutants falling down in the East Asia are insufficient, however, acidic pollutant transfer models applied at present are introduced. The results of the author`s study are described and the subjects for a future study are referred. 27 refs., 5 figs., 4 tabs.

  7. Environmental endocrine disruptors and developmental abnormalities in wildlife; Kankyo horumon (gaiinsei naibunpi kakuran kagaku busshitsu) no kankyo seibutsu ni taisuru eikyo

Iguchi, T. [Yokohama City Univ., Yokohama (Japan)

The environmental endocrine disruptor, or the so-called environmental hormone, is outlined. Hormones are secreted from endocrine glands in trace amounts, transported by blood, and exert influence on the target organs and distal cells, this to sustain constancy in living organisms. There are two types: peptide hormones which are rows of amino acids and steroid hormones which are composed of cholesterol. Endocrine disruptors are chemical substances discharged into the environment which, once taken into human organisms, disrupt endocrine systems, some acting like female sex hormones and others resisting male sex hormones. Many a wild animal are found affected by them. They are accumulating in human organisms too. Synthesized chemical substances such as DDT, PCB, dioxins, and alkylphenols present in the water system affect a fish by disrupting its endocrine, immunity, nerve, growth, and regeneration. Embryos and larvae are quite susceptible, easy to turn abnormal. Voices are high across the world for the study of environmental endocrine disruptors. Introduced in this report are some animal experiments, typical cases of impact on the ecosystem, and systems for detecting environmental endocrine disruptors. 36 refs., 1 tab.

  8. Survey of pollution-resistant plants and their cultivating techniques; Osen busshitsu taisei shokubutsu to sono shokusai gijutsu ni kansuru chosa

The reduction of forests due to environmental pollution has been surveyed, to investigate the pollution-resistant plants and solid microorganisms. In Japan, the blight of needle-leaf trees (pine and momi fir) and of Japanese oak has occurred, and blight of some other trees, such as wild cherry trees, Japanese apricot trees, birch, Japanese cedar, cypress and bamboo, has been reported from various regions. In this article, plants reported to be resistant to pollutants are listed, and the physiological features of these plants are described. Furthermore, to develop pollution-resistant plants, reports relating to clarification of the mechanism of resistance development and the genes involved are reviewed. Microorganisms which symbioses for roots support these root functions. They also suppress the activity of pathogenic microorganisms and improve the environment around the roots, thus helping plants to grow normally. 9. Analysis of the pollutant in the environment using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC); Chorinkai ryutai kuromatogurafui (SFC) wo mochiita kankyo chu no osen busshitsu no bunseki

Kakuchi, T.; Miura, Y. [Hokkaido Univ., Hokkaido (Japan)

The analysis of the organic pollutant in the environment is carried out as the following procedure; the organic substance is extracted by using the organic solvent from a collected sample, an instrument analysis such as gas chromatography (GC) or high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are done after the clean up the sample by column chromatography. The analysis using supercritical fluid instead of the organic solvent in each stage is supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) or supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). The supercritical fluid has a density and viscosity coefficient between gas and liquid, and the control of the dissolving power is possible by the change of temperature and pressure. Therefore, it has the advantage as follows: The material mobile speed is high and separation and extraction are rapid; It is easy to adjust the dissolving power and possible to carry out selective separation and extraction; The removal of solvent can be easily carried out since supercritical CO{sub 2} used is a gas in the normal pressure. In this paper, the analytical instrument in which the extraction is carried out in organic solvent and clean up was done in SFC was introduced. (NEDO)

  10. Occurrence and purification on microcystis species. Toxicology of blue-green algae toxins; Aoko/sono hassei to joka taisaku. Aoko no yudoku busshitsu no dokusei ni tsuite

Kaya, K. [National Inst. for Environmental Studies, Tsukuba (Japan)

In recent years the blue-green algae has occurred tremendously in the lakes at every places in the world, and therefore it has become a social problem. Especially in Australia and New Zealand, the damages not only on the cattles and the wild animals, they have commenced to develop up to the health problems of the residents. By a progress of the study of the blue-green algae toxins, a structure and toxicity of many blue-green algae toxins have been made clear. The microcystin which it one of them, is a hepatic toxin produced by the microcystis, anabaena and oscillatoria. By the way, because it was made clear recently by a study done by the National Cancer Center that it had a carcinogenesis promotion action, its action has been paid attention over again. In the blue-green algae toxins, besides the microcystin it is made clear that there are the nervus toxins such as the anatoxin-a and anatoxin-a (s) produced by anabaena, the aphantoxin produced by aphanizomenon and so forth. In this paper, as for the toxicity manifestation mechanism of the microcystin which is thought to become a point at issue in Japan, an information up to date is introduced. 17 refs., 2 figs.

  11. Antibiotics produced by marine bacteria and the evaluation of their activity; Kaiyo saikin no seisansuru kosei busshitsu to sono kassei hyoka

    Yoshikawa, K.

Researches continue into physiologically active substances metabolized by marine bacteria and, in this report, some that exhibit antibacterial activity (antibiotics) are introduced. A detailed description is given of a new, peculiar antibiotic named Koromicin discovered in this project. Since a number of terrestrial bacteria have already been investigated, marine halophiles, especially those adhering to large seaweed in eutrophic environments, are taken up in this paper. This is because they are easy to culture. Many are collected in Japan and South-Sea islands, and some are selected for culture in view of their capability for producing active substances. Active compounds are extracted from them, refined, isolated, and their structures are determined. It is found that many of the thus-obtained compounds are those that have already been isolated from marine creatures in the past, but this verifies the effectiveness of selecting the marine bacteria as the source from which to collect physiologically active substances. Koromicin discovered in this process is unique in that it impedes the growth of marine Gram-negative bacteria only. 11 refs., 4 figs., 2 tabs.

  12. Analysis and evaluation methods for chemical contaminants in clean room air; Kagaku osen no bunseki hyokaho clean room kukichu no kagaku osen busshitsu ni tsuite

    Fujimoto, T.

As for, chemical contamination in a cleanroom air has taken up as a important problem. As the main source is building materials, after construction the execution of countermeasures is difficult. Out-gas evaluation and selection in building materials, chemical filters for removing specific organic matter and so on, are a large technical theme in the future and analytical techniques corresponding them become necessary. In this paper, analytical methods of airborne molecular contaminants (AMCs) are introduced. Main samples are AMCs in cleanroom atmosphere, on silicon wafer surface and out-gas from raw materials for cleanroom construction materials such as sealant, plastics and so on. Analytical methods consist of quantification of inorganic compounds, organic compounds and identification of abnormal spot with local/surface analysis. Various interesting findings with analytical data are obtained and investigated. 22 refs., 6 figs., 5 tabs.

Saito, Y.; Soejima, T.; Tomozawa, T. [Taisei Corp., Tokyo (Japan); Doi, Y. [Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Tokyo (Japan); Kiya, F. [Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo (Japan)

The production of biodegradable plastics, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from volatile fatty acids (VFA) by aerobic or anaerobic/aerobic activated sludge was investigated. The anaerobic/aerobic activated sludge produced co-polyesters composed of 2-4 monomer units from VFA(C 2-C 5), and that the contents in dried sludge were as high as 7.8. -18.2wt%. The anaerobic/aerobic activated sludge produced co-polyester composed of [R]-hydroxybuyrate (3HB), [R]-3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV), [R]-3-hydroxynonanoate(3HN), and [R]-3-hydroxydecanoate (3HD) with high yield of 40 wt% from acetic acid as the sole carbon source in nitrogen-free wastewater for 6-12 h. It was suggested that PHA production from wastewater treatment was possible by using the anaerobic/aerobic activated sludge. 9 refs., 9 figs., 8 tabs.

Tanisho, Shigeharu; Suganuma, Takeshi [Yokohama National University, Kanagawa (Japan)

To use kelps as a substrate for fermentative hydrogen production by Enterobacter aerogenes strain E.82005, hydrogen evolution rates and yields from mannitol were measured under various salt-concentration cultures. Under non-salt condition, they were 13 mmol per litter culture per hour and 1.6 mol H{sub 2} per mol mannitol, as compared with these, under salt condition 1%, 2%, and 3%, they were 9.9 and 1.5, 4.3 and 1.2, and 3.0 and 0.9, respectively. From these results, we concluded that the production of hydrogen is suitable under non-salt condition, but lower salt condition than seawater especially around 1% is allowable for practical production of hydrogen. The higher yield of H{sub 2} from mannitol than from glucose was clearly shown from the mass balance between evolved H{sub 2} and calculated H2 from metabolite. (author)

  15. Investigational study on the development, production and wide spread of welfare apparatus in north Europe; Hokuo ni okeru fukushi yogu no kaihatsu seisan fukyu ni kansuru chosa kenkyu

For the purpose of grasping the present situation of the development/production/spread of welfare apparatus in north Europe, an investigation was conducted paying visits to Sweden and Denmark. Basically in the Swedish policy for handicapped persons, disablement is defined not only as features which belong to each individual, but as problems arising when the environment surrounding each individual touches one another. Moreover, characteristics of their policies on welfare apparatus are that major welfare apparatus can be provided for the disabled free of charge, and that the government and public organs play a major role in each step of the development, evaluation, distribution and provision of welfare apparatus. Features of the market of welfare apparatus are that users and buyers of the apparatus are different persons, that a public corporation called SUB participates in determining selling prices, etc., and that the market reflects needs and requests from users comparatively naturally. The needs for welfare apparatus at the Research Institute of Handicapped Persons are grasped through opinion exchanges with groups of handicapped persons or information exchanges with the technical aid center. 3 refs., 11 figs., 10 tabs.

  16. Integrated practical technology for rationalization of production system in Miike coal mine; Seisan kozo kaikaku no tame no sogo shien gijutsu (Miike tanko ni okeru gijutsu kaikaku)

Furukawa, H. [Mitsui Mining Co. Ltd., Tokyo (Japan)

This paper describes the improvement of production structure and the reduction since the latter half of FY 1990 in the Miike Coal Mine. The annual production was reduced from 4.5 to 2.35 million tons. The rationalization strategy is composed of the increase in productivity with intensive faces by introducing high performance mining facilities (MHP) and by modifying mining method, the mechanization of driving works, the simplification of underground structures, the reduction of indirect costs, and the rationalization of surface management departments. Faces were reduced to one or two by the MHP, and high operation rate and energy saving are achieved using self-advancing frames. Face moving period was reduced by rotating the MHP within the underground. Labor-saving of belt conveyors was achieved using built-up frames. For the gallery driving, a base gallery was excavated before production, and level driving was expanded through the base gallery. High-speed and systematic face driving was realized through in-seam driving by operating road header without using blasting. To avoid the decrease in operation rate due to unexpected faults or spring waters, early grasping system of face conditions was established, and environmental arrangement was enriched. The efficiency was improved from 96 in FY 1988 to 159 t/person{center_dot}month in FY 1995. 4 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

  18. Study on search for antioxidant peptides in unused protein resources and their production; Miriyo tanpaku shigen kara no kosanka pepuchido no tansaku to seisan ni kansuru kenkyu

For the development of antioxidants that are high in use value, peptides are produced in a bioreactor from so-far-unused or little-used protein resources originating in marine organisms collected along the Sanriku coast, and antioxidants that they may contain are searched for. Three kinds of red alga, eight kinds of brown alga, and internal organs of processed fish are treated in the bioreactor. The bioreactor is a rotary membrane type especially built for the effective decomposition of proteins in this study. Reaction solutions containing proteins and enzymes are let through an ultrafiltration membrane module in rotation at a high speed, and the products with their molecules reduced in weight are effectively taken out of the system (free of clogging). The specimens checked for antioxidant features are all found to be positive when subjected to the iron rhodanide method or carotene method, the two methods determining the change in the amount of oxygen in hydroperoxide and {beta}-carotene that are produced when the linolic acid is oxidized. Every one of the specimens prepared for this study exhibits antioxidant features in plural, different mechanisms. It is necessary to collect further basic findings about oxidation inhibiting mechanisms for the development of more active antioxidant peptides. 39 refs., 46 figs., 8 tabs.

In response to a wide use of the production simulation for production scheduling in the domain of factory automation (FA), a system of a machining flexible manufacturing system (FMS) production line using a general-purpose distribution control system building tool {Phi}NET was developed by Fuji Electric. In this report, an outline of this system was introduced as to its constitution and performance. This FMS production line has functions of the production scheduling, the production simulation, and the production instruction. Among them, the {Phi}NET model, in which the network model called petri-net and the production rule were combined, was applied to the production simulation. Consequently, was provided a prospect that the {Phi}NET would be developed to an FA simulator with which a production engineer can build a model with his own field language and conduct a simulation. 4 figs.

In a factory with a multi-stage production system, push-type scheduling methods can hardly improve the production rate without increasing the stocks of intermediates. For products whose specifications are known before their orders, a pull-type scheduling method named Kanban system has been developed, and has succeeded to improve the production rate without increasing the stocks of intermediates. The Kanban system, however, is not applicable to custom-made products whose specifications are not known before their orders. In this paper, a 'Virtual Kanban (VK) system' is presented as a pull-type scheduling method which is applicable to custom-made products, and its usefulness is demonstrated by simulation of an application specific integrated circuit manufacturing facility. Practical application of control of culture medium temperature by rock wool cultivation, and technology to produce gerbera throughout a year; Mizu chikunetsushiki heat pump wo riyoshite gabera wo shunen seisan. Aoki, M. [Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc., Osaka (Japan)

In order to utilize electric power more effectively in agriculture, technology to produce gerbera throughout a year by using rock wool cultivation has been established, by which culture medium temperature is cooled (heated) by using heat pumps. Once implanted, gerbera can provide flowers for two years, and demand for its cut flowers is increasing year after year. However, because high temperature in summer can create deformed flowers, reducing the rate of acceptable flower production, cut flower production is suspended during summer at the present. Therefore, nighttime electric power was utilized to accumulate cold (warm) water in a heat accumulation tank, circulate the water, and control the rock wool culture medium temperature to 20 to 25 degrees C which is suitable for growth of the plant. This system has made it possible to reduce greenhouse warming cost in winter. A non-control area had the average culture medium temperature vary to 30 degrees C or higher in summer and 15 degrees C in winter, while the control area maintained the temperature at 22 {+-} 1 degrees C both in summer and winter. The control area created not too great difference in flow quality as flower diameter and weight as compared to that in the non-control area, but had better flower stalk length with less deformed flower production, enhanced the acceptable product rate, and attained annual yield as great as 1.4 times. The assignment to the system is cost reduction. (NEDO)

The bio-film method is to utilize the purification force of a bio-film consisted of the microorganisms such as the bacteria, fungi, protozoa, micrometazoa and so forth, which are formed on the surface of the gravels at a bottom part of the river, for a polluted water purification. This bio-film method was developed for a purpose of to make its activity proceed artificially and efficiently insides the tank. If these protozoa and metazoa occur as a substantial quantity in the bio-film treatment method of the polluted lake water, as they exhibit a large force to decompose and make inorganic the algae, their mass colonization is extremely important. In actual site practice, because the bio-film quantity and the bio-phase fluctuate substantially depending on the inflowing pollution load quantity and the temperature, an investigation of the manipulation method, by which the bio-phase corresponding to an inflow condition can be dominant, is necessary. In addition, in order to effectively decompose and remove the 2-MTB, microcystin RR and so forth, because securing the colonization field for the useful microorganisms is essential, a development of the adhesion carrier in which the useful microorganisms are easy to live, is also needed. 9 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.

Research and development is conducted to collect intermediate products from Okinawan herbs for the production of antioxidant products usable for various purposes. Substance-producing plants are screened and the substances they offer are assessed for antioxidant activity, extracted, processed, prepared for market, and checked for safety. At the Okinawa Industrial Technology Center, a DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl)/microplate method has been established, which promptly measures the antioxidant activity of the substances. Using this technology, the divisions concerned of industrial, academic, and governmental organizations cooperate with each other over the optimization of herb cultivation technology, development of a herbal ingredient analyzing technology, efficacy of herbs, development of a safety assessment system, development of a technology for the effective extraction, processing, and preparation of herbal ingredients, and the development of a technology of assessing antioxidant intermediate products for their efficacy. As the result, a technology is established of producing intermediate antioxidant products from Guava, Ryukyuyomogi, and Ukonisomatsu. They are unique Okinawan products, and sell at 40,000-50,000 yen. Since the prices are equal to or lower than the prices of other antioxidant intermediate products, probabilities are very high that they will get into markets in Japan proper. (NEDO)

This paper describes the achievements in fiscal 1999 on researching and developing standard substances related to internal secretion disturbing chemical substances. Environmental contamination due to environmental hormones has a large number of scientifically unclear points. These points are related to the basic conditions for the existence of living organisms, whereas serious impacts transcending the generations are feared. In addition, the environmental hormones have been observed in water quality, water bottom quality, and living environments for aquatic animals. Standardization in technologies to measure them, and arrangement of standard substances are demanded strongly. Based on these circumstances, evaluations were given on the following matters: determination of purity of the reference substances with regard to the standard solutions of di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate, di-n-butyl phthalate, and diethyl phthalate among the standard substances required for the measurement, establishment of methods for measuring impurities and preparing the standard solutions, establishment of the methods to measure concentrations of the standard solutions, and the preservation stability of the standard solutions. As a result, standard solutions with accurate concentrations and excellent stability were developed. In addition, development was performed on the composition type standard substance for which a certified value was given to PCB in soil. (NEDO)

Organic substances in the river water in Yodo River system were analyzed by three-dimensional excitation emission matrix spectroscopy. Fluorescent substances were taken as an index of organic substances. The amount of fluorescent substances varied widely depending on the environment of river basin. It is suggested that the fluorescent substances are composed of organic substances which is not directly originated from biological activity. It is suggested that the fluorescent substances were produced by leaching of river bottom sediment. The fluorescent substances in Yodo River system consists of fulvic acid-like substances and protein. The analysis of fluorescent substances in river water by three-dimensional excitation emission matrix spectroscopy can be useful means for estimation of variation and origin of fluorescent substances. For better understanding of features of fluorescent substances in the surface water into which various kinds of substances enter, it is necessary to determine the exact sampling points based on the consideration of different sources and to make a database of peak positions for identification of fluorescent substances from fluorescence intensity peak. 29 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs.

Inada, Y. [Ehime Univ., Ehime (Japan). Faculty of Engineering; Seki, S.

Recently, many of the low temperature materials such as LNG and LPG used as an energy substitution for petroleum were stored in the reclaimed land of the sea side district, however, it is necessary for those storage methods to enlarge sites. Therefore, it was considered to directly store the low temperature materials in openings excavated in the rock mountains. However, countermeasures for leakage of liquid and cold gas from cracks in openings would be an important subject. In this study, as a countermeasure for leakage of liquid and cold gas in the case in which low temperature materials were stored in openings in the rock mountains, the lining of resin materials on the surface of openings was proposed. Characteristics of strength and deformation and values of the thermal physical properties for the resin materials at the low temperature were obtained by experiments. This material was compared with granite supposed as a parent rock, and the thermal property of the resin materials was understood. Next, an analysis was conducted in the case of using the resin materials as a lining, the behavior of the surrounding rocks of the openings and the stability of the lining were investigated. 17 refs., 25 figs., 2 tabs.

For the improvement of economy, coliquefaction of coal, tar sand bitumen and plastic was performed under low hydrogen pressure, to investigate the influence of interaction among these on the liquefaction characteristics. For comparison, coliquefaction was also performed under the hydrogen pressure same as the NEDOL process. In addition, for clarifying its reaction mechanism, coliquefaction of dibenzyl and plastic was performed as a model experiment, to illustrate the distribution of products and composition of oil, and to discuss the interaction between dibenzyl and various plastics, and between various plastics. Under direct coal liquefaction conditions, coprocessing of Tanito Harum coal, Athabasca tar sand and plastic was carried out under low hydrogen pressure with an autoclave. The observed value of oil yield was higher than the calculated value based on the values from separate liquefaction of coal and plastic, which suggested the interaction between coal and the mixed plastic. The results of coliquefaction of coal, tar sand bitumen and plastic could be explained from the obtained oil yield and its composition by the coliquefaction of dibenzyl and plastic. 2 refs., 3 tabs.

  9. Fate models for chemical substances in exposure and risk assessment. Focused on estimation of atmospheric concentration; Bakuro{center_dot}risuku hyoka ni okeru kagaku busshitsu unmei yosoku moderu. Taikichu nodo suitei wo chushin toshite

Higashino, H. [National Inst. for Resources and Environment, Tsukuba (Japan)

A fate model is one of the most effective tools in exposure and risk assessment of chemical substances. Two different type models are available for estimating the atmospheric concentration. One is unit box and multi compartment type model, the other is atmospheric dispersion model. These models should be used in different suitable situations because each model has both advantage and disadvantage. Estimation of the long-term average concentration in a comparatively wide region into which substances are continuously discharged should be required in the environmental assessment of chemical substances. We developed the model with which to estimate long-term average atmospheric concentrations of chemicals. The model validation was conducted for trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene concentrations in the atmosphere by comparing calculated values and observed values. Good agreement with the measured values was obtained for the monthly average concentration. The model is capable of estimating the long-term (such as monthly) average distribution of concentration of chemicals in a wide flat area such as the Kanto plain. (author)

Anthropogenic emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in China was investigated to establish an emission inventory on air pollutants in East Asia. Major objectives of the study were to establish the emission inventory having the most detailed emission categories and regional resolution comparing with previous works, and being expandable to other air pollutants. Under popularization of desulfurization, conventional methodologies face to limitation of data quality, but in this work the contribution of SO2 removal by recent installation of desulfurization units was also taken into account. China was selected as the first subjective country because China has the largest emission sources of SO2 in East Asia, which contribute a significant portion of acid deposition in Japan. By our estimation total amounts of 21 Tg of SO2 were emitted in China in 1990. About 90% of the SO2 came from coal combustion, and power and heat generation part was responsible for over 30% of the total discharge. The total amounts of the SO2 emission were classified by provinces, major cities, and two grid systems such as 80{times}80 km square and 1{degree}{times}1{degree} resolution. Emissions in Sichian, Shandong and Jiangus provinces were ranked as the top three. Chongqing, Shanghai and Chengdu were selected to be major cities for the SO2 emission. 30 refs., 8 figs., 9 tabs.

Okoshi, K.; Saito, Y.; Tajima, S. [Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Tokyo (Japan)

For many refractory materials, vapor pressures rise due to fluoridation. For example, a vapor pressure of B is almost zero at room temperature, whereas a vapor pressure of BF{sub 3} is 10{sup 5}Pa or greater. A SF{sub 6} plasma method is capable of directly generating a solid fluoride in an ion source and obtaining its plasma. In order to ionize refractory materials such as niobium, boron, silicon and the like, the present authors have developed a new ion generation method using a stable solid sample and SF{sub 6} gas. Further, the present method was employed to successfully and greatly extending the filament life of the ion source. The plasma method can be used widely not only for a Freeman ion source but also for an ion source using plasma such as electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source. Since the refractory material ions can be stably supplied at a great intensity for a long time, they are expected to be used in corrosion-resistant materials or materials having new functions such as optical switching materials. An investigation was conducted with the aim of elucidating the foundations for effective utilization of environmental pollutants or unused resources which are likely to be causal substances of environmental pollutants, as resources, using biotechnology. Composting of agricultural waste, production of microbial mycelium proteins and microbial fermentation materials were suggested as main examples of effective utilization of unused resources by microorganisms. Selection of active microorganisms in the livestock waste, clarification of the mechanism of action and the establishment of treatment conditions are essential to new developments in this field. In the field of marine products industry, it was pointed out that the recycling of waste using microorganisms and enzyme treatment is the most promising approach to the effective utilization of resources. In the field of food industry, applications as the culture media for mushrooms, for enzyme production and for the production of physiologically active materials as well as fuel were clarified. Was also pointed out the significance of studies on the microorganisms and enzymes in resources containing cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, and the waste from these resources, lignocellulose. Were also proposed the composting of household waste, methane fermentation, and fermentative production of organic acid and hydrogen from waste. Possibility and significance of fermentative production of organic acid from sewage sludge were suggested. 314 refs., 46 figs., 33 tabs.

A cell cultivation using a liquid/liquid (culture medium/fluorocarbon) interface has been practiced as a novel culturing method for anchorage-dependent animal cells, and it is known that cell adhesion at the interface is dependent on the contaminants contained in the hydrophobic liquid. Substances effective for the adhesion and growth of cells are investigated using various surfactants. As a result of comparison of ionic and nonionic surfactants, cell adhesion is observed when ionic surfactant is used, indicating the importance of the electric charge of surfactant. Cell growth is better when ionic surfactant is added to fluorocarbon than when surfactant is added to the culture medium. The cell growth using fluorocarbon added with pentafluorobenzoyl chloride and perfluorooctanoyl chloride is similar to that of culturing using polystyrene, and the importance of surfactant addition to fluorocarbon is indicated. 7 refs., 4 figs.

Results of studies and knowledges therefrom are reported on intermediate materials used in the chemical industry and ethylene oxide used as a sterilizer for medical devices as to how their toxicity affects the different sexes and feminine genital organs. Male and female rats were subjected to inhalation of and exposure to ethylene oxide at a concentration of 250 ppm 6 hours a day, 5 days a week for 17 weeks (some of them for 10 weeks), and chronic toxicity of ethylene oxide was investigated on sexual difference and female genital organs. The female rats showed their estrous cycle extended, and an increase in ratio of the estrous periods accounting for in the entire cycles was idenfified. While no sexual difference was identified in the degree of disorders in peripheral nervous system, strong macrocytic normochromia anemia was observed in female rats. Activity of glutathione reductase in ovaries has decreased, and an increase in glutathione-S-transferase activity was observed. It was made clear from these facts that ethylene oxide affected also female genital organs. 15 refs., 7 figs., 10 tabs.

  16. FY 1998 annual report on the decomposition/removal of harmful compounds in the gaseous phase by porous membrane provided with a catalytic function; 1998 nendo shokubai kinotsuki fuyo takomaku ni yoru kisochu yugai busshitsu no bunkai jokyo chosa hokokusho

Harmful compounds, e.g., dioxins and nitrogen oxides, released into the air are causing severer environmental problems on a global scale. In order to solve these problems, it is necessary to efficiently remove the released compounds in the vicinity of the living environments, while preventing, as far as possible, their formation at the sources. An attempt has been made to develop porous membranes impregnated with composites of a variety of metallic oxides showing activities as photocatalysts and for dark reactions by the ion engineering method, in order to drastically solve the above problems. Described herein are the FY 1998 results. Thin films of various titanium oxide crystals (anatase, rutile, and their combinations) are formed on Si substrates by the ion engineering method, as the photocatalysts for decomposition of aldehyde and water (for hydrogen production), to validate the optimum crystalline structures for the photocatalysis. Porous bodies of Ni and carbon are also impregnated with anatase TiO{sub 2} for decomposition of harmful gaseous compounds and water, to validate the effects of the porous membranes provided with catalytic functions. With an objective to elucidate the structure recognizing ability possessed by living organisms, discussions were given on methods to analyze the bonds between optically active drugs and polymers, and methods to analyze drug disposition fluid-dynamically. Studies have been advanced on the following themes, and the results were obtained therefrom: development of an on-line system to quantify non-protein bonding type concentrations in drugs utilizing the high-performance fraction analysis (HPFA, using a restricted movement type HPLC column) that had been already developed, establishment of a method to analyze hepatic local drug disposition by using the MULTI (drug disposition analyzing) program, and studies on stereoselectivity by using NMR generated by interactions of local anesthetics and lipids. The following findings were obtained: using the above on-line system, a discussion was given on protein bonds between BOF-4272 (xanthine oxidase inhibitor) and serum albumins, and the discussion was found effective in analyzing the stereoselectivity in drugs with strong protein bond; and with the above analytic method, optical behavior of ketoprofen (KP) in rat liver perfusion was discussed, wherein the transfer of KP into liver tissues was estimated to have been caused by involvement of active transportation rather than physical diffusion. 7 refs., 6 figs., 4 tabs.

Previously we reported the results of the ignitability, the drop ball and the SC-DSC tests on the high sensitive materials. When tetracene was tested with the drop ball tester, we were not able to evaluate the degree of hazardness because the substance was less sensitive to this test. Impact sensitivity of diazonitrophenol (DDNP), lead styphnate, lead azide, tetracene and potassium-diazonitro benzofuroxane (KDNBF) have been investigated using the underwater small gap test. This method indicates that tetrazene has the highest sensitivity order of the underwater small gap test is compared with that of the drop ball test. The sample container is a polyethylene tube with 7 mm inside diameter and 8.5 mm outside diameter. Gap plate is a polyethylene of 6.5 mm diameter and 1-2 mm thickness. 2 refs., 4 figs.

  19. Report on the FY 1999 research survey on the industrial utilization/development of the biofilm formation mechanism and antifouling substances; 1999 nendo bio film keisei kiko oyobi sogai busshitsu no sangyoteki riyo kaihatsu chosa hokokusho

The paper described the results of the FY 1999 research on the fouling by marine aufwuchs. The survey is aimed at searching the nature world for active substances for biological antifouling. The fouling mechanism in the ocean is as follows. The adsorption of organisms called the conditioning film first occurs on the surface, and next, bacteria and diatom around the surface form biofilm and cover. After that, biological fouling by large aufwuchs occurs. Therefore, the control of biofilm formation was regarded as most important, and with this as a guidepost, the search was conducted. Using biofilm anti-formation activity and periphytic bacteria anti-growth activity as guideposts, some compounds were searched for. Being aimed at Porifera, in particular, new compounds were isolated from it. Since few of other organisms attaches on the surface of sponge, there is a great possibility of Porifera's producing any anti-fouling substances. Further, it is thought that symbiotic microorganisms of sponge (40% of the total weight) produce various biologically active substances. Synthetic phenethyl amine derivatives were also studied. Preparation of biodegradable microcapsule using a poly lactic acid as wall material was performed by (W/O/W) emulsion solvent evaporation method. Fractional entrapment of the core material and the average diameter of the microcapsule are independent of the composition of the inner aqueous phase, such as salt concentration, pH and viscosity. On the other hand, by changing the salt concentration of the outer aqueous phase and the hold up of dispersion phase in the (W/O) emulsion, it is possible to increase the fractional entrapment of the core material with the increase in (W/O/W) emulsion stability and amount of wall material. The entmpment effect is controlled by preparation conditions. 9 refs., 9 figs.

Nakai, S.; Inoue, Y.; Hosomi, M.; Murakami, A. [Tokyo Univ. of Agriculture and Technology, Tokyo (Japan)

This paper describes effects of allelochemicals secreted by Myriophyllum spicatum on growth of blue-green algae. In order to propose an effective growth inhibitory method of blue-green algae with less impact on the ecosystem, biological interaction (allelopathy) between large aquatic plants and algae was investigated. Pyrogallic acid, gallic acid, catechin and ellagic acid secreted by M. spicatum provided growth inhibitory effects of blue-green algae (Microcyctis aeruginosa), individually. Complex interaction and allelopathic contribution of these four polyphenols were evaluated. By comparing the actual effects with the expected values, synergetic growth inhibitory effects were recognized by adding four polyphenols at the same time. Furthermore, growth inhibitory effects were evaluated for actual culture solution of M. spicatum and simulated culture solution made by four polyphenols. As a result, it was found that these four polyphenols relate to allelopathy of M. spicatum. 25 refs., 6 figs., 4 tabs.

A solar heat-aided system is investigated, in which CO2 is recycled, with methanol, dimethyl ether, etc., serving as carriers of the solar heat energy. In the evaluation of validity of the system as a whole, the system scale and economy and technologies necessary for the system were studied, which was to find out whether solar methanol production was commercially feasible in the sun belt. It was concluded that solar methanol was capable of competing against LNG (liquefied natural gas) in cost, that Japan was able to establish its own technologies for developing coal gasification solar reactors using overseas technologies for information, and that therefore such a system was technologically and economically valid. In the study of related technologies as is, surveys were conducted on coal gasification, natural gas reforming furnaces, methanol synthesis, dimethyl ether synthesis, light condensing technology, current state and cost of solar reactors, etc. Also investigated were the marketability of solar hybrid fuel, CO2 reduction efficiency, and the construction cost at the assumed site of construction (Australia). Asakura, T.; Toda, K. (The University of Tokyo, Tokyo (Japan). Institute of Applied Microbiology)

For the purpose of effective production of ethanol, high cell-density culture was examined using a bioreactor with a flat-membrane filtlation module for three kinds of ethanol production microorganism, and the productivity of ethanol fermentation was investigated. The flow direction of the culture broth circulating along a flat membrane in the filtration module was changed periodically, at intervals of 4 minutes and 1 minute, as a result of which, the filtration flux was stabilized to some degree and increased five-fold over that of the control experiment. When the cell concentration in the reactor was maintained at a constant by draining broth at a proper rate, the filtration flux was stabilized further and increased twenty-fold over that of the control experiment. The productivity and exit concentration of ethanol in this cell recycle culture when the cell concentration was 200 gl{sup {minus}1} of Bakers yeast, were 83.7 gl{sup {minus}1}h{sup {minus}1} and 30.2 gl{sup {minus}1}, respectively. For the other two kinds of yeast, high ethanol concentration and productivity were confirmed, concluding that this production method was effective. 25 refs., 9 figs., 1 tab.

  5. FY 1998 annual report on the exploration and production of functional peptide from unutilized protein resources; 1998 nendo miriyo tanpakushitsugen kara no kinosei pepuchido no tansaku to seisan ni kansuru kenkyu hokokusho

This project is aimed at promotion of effective utilization of unutilized resources by transforming histidine-containing peptide (anserine), enzymatically hydrolyzed muscle protein present in lean salmon swimming off the Sanriku District in the spawning season, into functional peptide. A reactor system, comprising an enzyme-immobilized column and rotary bioreactor, is investigated to efficiently produce peptide by enzymatically hydrolyzing the water-insoluble muscle protein. Anserine is isolated by ethanol extraction, ion-exchanging and partition chromatography. The TPTZ and ABTS methods are developed for speeding up measurement of the antioxidant activity. The salmon muscle protein is hydrolyzed by 3 types of enzymes, to measure the free radical erasing activity by the ABTS method. The enzymatically hydrolyzed protein is fractionated by gel permeation chromatography. The fractions having a molecular weight of 10,000 or less show strong antioxidant activity. The hydrolyzed protein shows improved activity by the iron rhodanide method when it has histidine at the center of tripeptide, and strong radical erasing function when it has thyrosine or tryptophan at the carboxyl terminal. 6. Manufacturing technology supported by advanced and integrated information system through international cooperation in fiscal 1995; Kan`i sosagata denshi sekkei seisan shien system no kaihatsu ni kansuru kenkyu kyoryoku

Informatization using mainly computers is more and more important contributing to the upgrading in society, economy and a variety of fields. As to informatization in developing countries, however, there has still been few to be seen. Accordingly, gaps are getting larger between developing countries and developed countries where informatization is acceleratedly advanced. In the light of such actual state, Center of the International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC) contracted with NEDO and promoted a project `Manufacturing technology supported by advanced and integrated information system through international cooperation.` This is a project to study jointly with five Asian countries with which NEDO made a basic contract, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Working group is set up for each theme such as automobiles/parts, electric home appliances/parts, and fiber/apparel, to study the construction of a model house and the design of a system. In fiscal 1994, the field survey was conducted, and in fiscal 1995 the system design was started. 16 figs., 1 tab.

Tada, Y. [Japan National Oil Corp., Tokyo (Japan). Natural Gas and Project Planning Dept.

New diplomatic policies based on energy diversification and multinational cooperation, the rapid growth of economic development and energy demand, and the social consideration of preventing environmental pollution (such as CO{sup 2} emissions, acid rain, destruction of the ozone layer and global warming) have caused the utilization of natural gas resources to become the new energy trend. Exploration and production technologies for natural gas are basically very similar to those for crude oil. They also consist of various relevant technical aspects such as gravity survey, seismic survey, logging, well drilling, reservoir simulation, field development planning and production monitoring. Additionally, the oil and gas industry has been continuously making efforts to resolve various technical issues and improve its performance and efficiency. For the past ten years, as the result of these tremendous and ceaseless efforts, we have obtained various innovations and reduced risks and costs. Furthermore, new natural gas utilization technologies such as GTL (Gas to liquid), DME(Di-methyl ether), fuel cell and hythane are now under development and moreover, it's expected that the utilization of natural gas resources will further increase. This paper briefly explains the outline of exploration and production technologies applied to natural gas in the world. (author)

  9. Calculation of oil production performance of the large giant oil fields in the world: based upon oil fields depletion model; Yuden gentai model ni yoru sekai no ogata kyodai yuden no seisan kyodo ni kansuru ichishisan

Nomoto, S. [Japan Oil Development Co. Ltd., Tokyo (Japan); Fujita, K. [The University of Tokyo, Tokyo (Japan)

Data for large giant oil fields with minable reserves of one billion barrels or more were accumulated to structure a new oil field depletion model and estimate production in each oil field. As a result of analyzing events recognized in large giant oil fields, necessity was made clear to correct the conventional oil depletion model. The newly proposed model changes definitions on the depletion period of time, depletion rate, build-up production (during a time period in which production rate increases) and production in a plateau (a time period in which production becomes constant). Two hundred and twenty-five large giant oil fields were classified into those in a depletion period, an initial development phase, and a plateau period. The following findings were obtained as a result of trial calculations using the new model: under an assumption of demand growth rate of 1.5%, oil field groups in the initial development phase will reach the plateau production in the year 2002, and oil fields in the depletion period will continue production decline, hence the production amount after that year will slow down. Because the oil field groups in the plateau period will shift into decline in 2014, the overall production will decrease. The year 2014 is about ten years later than the estimation given recently by Campbell. Undiscovered resources are outside these discussions. 11 refs., 9 figs., 2 tabs.

Research and development of the technology to create biological bonding substances utilizing particulates; 1999 nendo biryushi riyogata seitai ketsugo busshitsu nado sosei gijutsu no kenkyu kaihatsu seika hokokusho

This paper describes the achievements in fiscal 1999 on development of the technology to create biological bonding substances utilizing particulates. In fixing ligands onto particulates, it is necessary that various compounds be fixed with their receptor bonding specificity maintained. Therefore, carboxylic acid, thiol and bromoacetyl groups were introduced into the particulates. Capping them by using methoxyacetyl was found capable of suppressing non-specific adsorption. Opioid compounds were synthesized for their fixation onto particulates for selection and separation. Carrying particulate bonding precursors in latex beads was realized. Synthesis will continue on opiod compounds in which amide groups are introduced into different positions to provide the particulate carrying ligands with diversity. Biological receptors for different compounds were obtained and refined by using compound fixing particulates. Refinement and acquisition were possible on FK506 bonded protein in a short time from cell extraction liquid by using the fixing particulates for the FK506 bonded protein. The paper also describes analysis of bonded domains, and position-specific fixation of the biological receptors. (NEDO)

This report summarizes the fiscal 1998 result on the entrusted research 'R and D of technologies for creating new bioaffinity molecules using submicron beads' based on 'Industrial science and technology R and D system.' As for development of technologies for analyzing chemical- biomolecule complexes using submicron affinity beads, for molecule design of DNA to be connected with cisplatin, telomere DNA was employed as a target DNA of cisplatin, and cisplatin-modified DNA (Pt-DNA) was synthesized. Reaction condition for Pt-DNA connected beads was established, and affinity beads with Pt-DNA were prepared. As for development of organic receptor refining technology, proteins bound to cisplatin-DNA were preliminarily analyzed, showing that the Pt-DNA is a proper target chemical substance. It is the first evidence that certain proteins recognize cisplatin-damaged telomere DNA. In addition, introduction of the equipment for developing analysis technology of binding domains, development of technology to create organic receptors with new functions, and general research on the titled technologies were carried out. This paper describes the achievements in fiscal 1999 on developing a screening test method with high accuracy for internal secretion disturbing substances. Development was made in cooperation with the OECD on the screening method that uses as a parameter whether a chemical substance has a hormone-like activity. For the womb breeding assay method to evaluate a feminine hormone-like activity, a reproducibility and comparison test was performed on womb breeding in immature rats administered with ethinylestradiol, the administration routes, and animals used (young and weak rats, and rats whose ovaries have been extracted). In order to evaluate a masculine hormone-like activity, the basic data were collected to develop the Hershberger method, and participation was made in the OECD verification tests. Discussions were given on comparison on castrated and non-castrated rats when 17 {alpha}-methyltestosterone was administered, the administration period of time and reproducibility when immature rats were used. The Hershberger method reactivity was discussed on rats relative to estrogen. In a toxicity test using 28-day repetitive administration, bisphenol A gave impacts on the kidney, the stomach and intestine tubes. (NEDO)

Concerning the measurement system of ultra-micro hazardous chemical substances in the global environment, the paper examined the present situation of chemical substances such as dioxins, made an experimental study on the method to analyze dioxins in exhaust gas from an aspect of international consistency, and worked out a JIS draft. As to the standard measuring method of hormone effects of chemical substances, the paper developed the competitive bonding experiment system to measure bonding ability of chemical substances to homo sapiens estrogen receptor (ER). By measuring ER bonding ability of 78 kinds of chemical substances, the measuring method was developed. In the development of the assay system for detection of hormone-like compounds, the assay system with transfer activity via estrogen receptor as an index was established using cultured cells and yeast. Further, the development was made of a measuring method of receptor bonding activity of hormone-like substances. 33 refs., 151 figs., 66 tabs.

In this report. we extend the similarity argument previously used to the mean square concentration fluctuation equation on the symmetrical plane of the wall point source plume in a turbulent pipe flow to find the similar solution for the mean square concentration fluctuation distribution. The main assumptions are the Lagrangean similar hypothesis and an appropriate eddy diffusivity distribution to the triple correlation term and the mixing length theory. It is found that the distribution of the similar solution shows good agreement with experimental data in a pipe flow. In the case of a wall point source in a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate, the same argument is appliciable, and the similar solution obtained shows good agreement with the experimental data. Report on International Workshops on CO{sub 2} Cycling and Metabolism in Coral Reef; 1998 nendo chikyu sangyo gijutsu kaihatsu suishin jigyo. 'Sangosho ni okeru busshitsu ido to tanso junkan' kokusai workshop hokokusho

For the study of CO{sub 2} absorption and fixation in the marine ecosystem, studies of coral reefs by RITE (Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth) were subjected to discussion at the above-named workshops. It is after the elapse of a long geological time on the earth that CO2 in the atmosphere has arrived at the current level of concentration thanks to fixation and calcification by living organisms and to dissolution into the seawater. In the formation of CaCO{sub 3} that constitutes the coral skeleton, 1 mol Ca combines with 2 mol bicarbonates for the production of 1 mol CaCO{sub 3} and 1 mol CO{sub 2}. The reaction may suggests a consequential increase of CO2 in the atmosphere but such CO{sub 2} is in reality consumed by being converted into organic substances in a photosynthetic process performed by symbiotic algae. Calculation was made for the whole of Bora Bay, Miyakojima Island, and the result was that 700kg-C/day comes to be stored in the form of organic matters in the community of coral reef organisms. In a coral reef, even when it emits CO2 into the atmosphere, there is organic matter production which exceeds the lost CO{sub 2}. Coral reefs fix carbon out of the seawater at the rate of 0.42Gt-C/year, which is the aggregate of 0.3Gt organic matters and 0.12Gt CaCO{sub 3}. (NEDO)

  20. Achievement report for fiscal 1998 on area consortium research and development business, 1st year. Area consortium energy research and development (biofuel production by advanced function bioreactor); 1998 nendo chiiki consortium energy bun'ya. Kokino bio reactor ni yoru bio nenryo seisan ni kansuru kenkyu kaihatsu

Studies were made to produce ethanol directly from starch and cellulose and to collect biodiesel fuels from waste oil by an enzymatic method. For an increase in the yield of biodiesel fuel production, lipase enzymes were explored and optimum reaction conditions were sought for. Starch decomposition was quick for conversion into the target material in a system with the co-expression of amylase and glucoamylase present on the yeast cell surface layer. There was dramatically rapid progress in the increase of enzymatic activity in the cell, although dependent on cell membrane surface treatment conditions. In the generation of acetaminophen by recombinant cohesive yeasts, highly active and expressive yeasts were automatically fixed in the porous support (intelligent bioreactor) while those deactivated or dead were automatically removed. For the construction of a fuzzy control system for this reaction, basic models were investigated, built on the basis of the enzymatic model of reaction and substance balance. A high-precision structural analysis was conducted for the exploration of secondary structure stabilizing factors in protein and peptide and for the elucidation of correlations between structure and function. Enzymatic and chemical methods were combined and methods were developed for synthesizing mucin type sugar chains and glycopeptides. The influence of sugar chain positions and structures on glycoconjugate stereo structures and physiological activities was analyzed, and glycopeptide structural activities and glycoconjugate remodelling were studied. To create an industrial advantage in a glycoprotein production system by use of zooblasts, sugar chain structure control through sugar transfase occurrence control was studied. For the production of man-adaptive sugar chains using yeast, new yeast variations were subjected to molecular breeding, and tested for the resultant improvement on productivity. Sugar chain marking and refining techniques and various responding mechanisms on the solid surface were elucidated, which enabled structure analyses using sugar chain recognition molecules such as lectins and antibodies. A database on interactions between sugar chains and sugar chain recognition molecules was constructed using the said findings. An analyzing program was also formulated tentatively. This paper also covers general surveys and studies on technologies of producing and utilizing glycoconjugates. (NEDO)

Seisan system nado ni okeru open robot yo tsushin interface no hyojunka

For the purpose of standardizing the communication interface system between personal computers and robots, the R and D were conducted on ORiN (Open Robot Interface for the Network), and the FY 1999 results were summed up. ORiN is composed of the provider part, kernel part and application logic part. The provider absorbs differences in expression and protocols of robot controller data of each company and conveys them to the kernel part. The kernel part is composed of RAO and RDF. RAO adopts the disperse object model DCOM technology and supplies the network transparency and common access method to robot. RDF supplies files with expansion of robot structure models using XML. By this, ORiN was made adoptable for future, permitting differences in each robot. In the International Robot Exhibition held in October 26-29, 1999, the prototype of ORiN was jointly demonstrated by each company. (NEDO)

The foraminifera, which is a biological species often used for the study of paleoenvironments, is taken up to discuss problems often encountered in the treatment of biological species in the study of paleoenvironments and methods to solve them. Changes appear in the chemical constitution of the shell of a foraminifer or the like for various physiological or ecological reasons. What is called the vital effect is the phenomenon of the systematic deviation of the shell chemical constitution from the environmental water chemical constitution due to metabolic reaction, and is supposed to reflect the integrated life cycle, growth rate, food preferences, microhabitat segregation, and the taphonomic process. In an experiment for establishing reliability for environmental proxies, it is found that a positive correlation exists between the Mg/Ca ratio in the shell of planktonic foraminifers and the culturing temperature/salinity. It is also learned that the Mg/Ca ratio is different among their species. Researches are now under way into elements that are in presence only in trace, such as Sr, Cd, Ba, Ge/Si, and into various organic substances. It is noted here that screening is required before some can service as environmental proxies. For this process, culture with specified environmental factors placed under control will be useful. 85 refs., 10 figs., 2 tabs.

In view of the prospective demand for coal in China and of the current state of transportation, a development plan is formulated for Tangkou Mining Area (of model mines) for the purpose of realizing efficient exploitation of coal. The infrastructures for coal transportation are complete in this area, and delivery of coal is easy from this area to the coal demanding regions. Although coal seams are quite deep in the ground, the important ones contain rich reserves. Exploitation is carried out under a vertical shaft scheme, in which pits extend horizontally at the level of 950m below the sea surface. As for production, an annual yield of 3-million ton is predicted thanks to two compositely mechanized coal faces. Coal is won by the monolayer side hole method in the case of seams not thicker than 4.0m, and by the caved stope method in the case not thinner than 4.0m. Employed for the mines are 1077 people. Operation days are 300, efficiency 15t/man/shift. The annual sale in total is expected to be worth 759-million 534.6-thousand yuan. To be required for the construction will be 1.2-billion yuan for mines and 0.2-billion yuan for coal dressing facilities, or 1.4-billion yuan in all, and the figures indicate that the plan is economically promising. 43 figs., 119 tabs.

Abrupt and steep climate changes of the millennial scale as represented by the Dansgaard-Oeschger cycle (D-O cycle) and the behavior of the global surface layer system in their wake are outlined. The D-DO cycle is the abrupt and steep climate changes that are recorded in the Greenland continental ice sheet, and is grasped most typically as changes in the oxygen isotopic ratio in the ice. Studies reveal that the D-O cycle is a global episode that accompanied interaction between various subsystems constituting the global surface layer system. It is believed that in the D-O cycle there were changes not only in temperature but also in aridity/moisture and in the sea level, and probabilities are high that there was a great local variation in the way the changes took effect. The possibility has now become lower that the D-O cycle occurred in the interglacial epoch in the high latitude belt in the northern hemisphere, yet it remains likely that the climate changes driving the D-O cycle continued in the low latitude belt. 57 refs., 8 figs.

The coal utilization is expected to make substantial growth according to the long-term energy supply/demand plan. To further expand the future coal utilization, however, it is indispensable to reduce environmental loads in its total use with other energies, based on the coal use. In this survey, a regional model survey was conducted as environmental load reduction measures using highly cleaned coal which were taken in fiscal 1993 and 1994. Concretely, a model system was assumed which combined facilities for mixed combustion with coal and other energy (hull, bagasse, waste, etc.) and facilities for effective use of burned ash, and potential reduction in environmental loads of the model system was studied. The technology of mixed combustion between coal and other energy is still in a developmental stage with no novelties in the country. Therefore, the mixed combustion technology between coal and other energy is an important field which is very useful for the future energy supply/demand and environmental issues. 34 refs., 27 figs., 48 tabs.

In Item 1), discussions were given, using rice straw and waste woods as the object, on effects of biomass particle size, sulfuric acid to biomass feeding ratio, sulfuric acid concentration, reaction temperature and time on the cellulose to hemicellulose reaction ratio and the sugar conversion factor, whereas it was revealed that the governing factors are the biomass/sulfuric acid contact area and the reaction temperature. In Item 2), a chromatographic device filled with anion ion exchange resin was used to set the sugar recovery rate of 100% and the sulfuric acid recovery rate of 93%. (NEDO)

  6. [Eating characteristics of Chilean indigenous and non-indigenous adolescent girls].

Araneda, Jacqueline; Amigo, Hugo; Bustos, Patricia

During childhood and adolescence, eating habits become established which are instrumental in determining eating behavior later in life. Various authors have described the acculturation of the Mapuche people toward Western culture. The objective of this study was to analyze the eating characteristics of indigenous and non-indigenous adolescent girls in the Araucania Region of Chile. A cross-sectional design was used with a probabilistic sample of 281 adolescents comprised of 139 indigenous and 142 non-indigenous girls attending 168 elementary schools. A modified food frequency questionnaire was applied, designed to obtain information about eating habits and consumption of Mapuche foods. The eating schedules are similar in both ethnic groups, with dinner being the meal that is least consumed. Total snack consumption per week has a mean of 7 with an interquartile range (IQR) of 5 to 10 without any differences between ethnic groups; of these snacks, only 2 were healthy (IQR = 1 to 3). The indigenous girls had a higher probability of consumption of native foods including mote (boiled wheat) (OR = 2.00; IC = 0.93-4.29), muday (fermented cereal alcohol) (OR = 3.45; IC = 1.90-6.27), and yuyo (field mustard) (OR = 4.40; IC = 2.06-9.39). The study's conclusion is that the the eating habits and behavior of indigenous adolescents are similar to those of non-indigenous girls, though the former still consume more indigenous foods.

  7. Prospección de las combinaciones de herbicidas para prevenir malezas tolerantes y resistentes al glifosato Exploration of herbicide associations to prevent glyphosate tolerant and resistant weeds

    R.A. VIDAL

The intense use of glyphosate in Argentina has increased the spread of weeds with tolerance to this herbicide, like Ipomoea nil. 9. Super-Sonograms and graphical seismic source locations: Facing the challenge of real-time data processing in an OSI SAMS installation

    Joswig, Manfred

The installation and operation of an OSI seismic aftershock monitoring system (SAMS) is bound by strict time constraints: 30+ small arrays must be set up within days, and data screening must cope with the daily seismogram input. This is a significant challenge since any potential, single ML -2.0 aftershock from a potential nuclear test must be detected and discriminated against a variety of higher-amplitude noise bursts. No automated approach can handle this task to date; thus some 200 traces of 24/7 data must be screened manually with a time resolution sufficient to recover signals of just a few sec duration, and with tiny amplitudes just above the threshold of ambient noise. Previous tests confirmed that this task can not be performed by time-domain signal screening via established seismological processing software, e.g. PITSA, SEISAN, or GEOTOOLS. Instead, we introduced 'SonoView', a seismic diagnosis tool based on a compilation of array traces into super-sonograms. Several hours of cumulative array data can be displayed at once on a single computer screen - without sacrifying the necessary detectability of few-sec signals. Then 'TraceView' will guide the analyst to select the relevant traces with best SNR, and 'HypoLine' offers some interactive, graphical location tools for fast epicenter estimates and source signature identifications. A previous release of this software suite was successfully applied at IFE08 in Kasakhstan, and supported the seismic sub-team of OSI in its timely report compilation.

  10. Seismicity in 2010 and major earthquakes recorded and located in Costa Rica from 1983 until 2012, by the local OVSICORI-UNA seismic network

    Ronnie, Q.; Segura, J.; Burgoa, B.; Jimenez, W.; McNally, K. C.

This work is the result of the analysis of existing information in the earthquake database of the Observatorio Sismológico y Vulcanológico de Costa Rica, Universidad Nacional (OVSICORI-UNA), and seeks disclosure of basic seismological information recorded and processed in 2010. In this year there was a transition between the software used to record, store and locate earthquakes. During the first three months of 2010, we used Earthworm (, SEISAN (Haskov y Ottemoller, 1999) and Hypocenter (Lienert y Haskov, 1995) to capture, store and locate the earthquakes, respectively; in April 2010, ANTELOPE ( start to be used for recording and storing and GENLOC (Fan at al, 2006) and LOCSAT (Bratt and Bache 1988), to locate earthquakes. GENLOC was used for local events and LOCSAT for regional and distant earthquakes. The local earthquakes were located using the 1D velocity model of Quintero and Kissling (2001) and for regional and distant earthquakes IASPEI91 (Kennett and Engdahl, 1991) was used. All the events for 2010 and shown in this work were rechecked by the authors. We located 3903 earthquakes in and around Costa Rica and 746 regional and distant seismic events were recorded (see Figure 1). In this work we also give a summary of major earthquakes recorded and located by OVSICORI-UNA network between 1983 and 2012. Seismicity recorded by OVSICORI-UNA network in 2010

The objective was to evaluate the losses of the superficial bank of Amaranthus quitensis seeds, due to insect predation, in a soybean crop and in the subsequent fallow, in two tillage systems. 13. Estimation of earthquake source parameters in the Kachchh seismic zone, Gujarat, India, using three component S-wave spectra

    Nagamani, Durgada; Mandal, Prantik

Earthquake source parameters and crustal Q0 values for the 138 selected local events of (Mw{:}2.5{-}4.4) the 2001 Bhuj earthquake sequence have been computed through inversion modelling of S-waves from three-component broadband seismometer data. SEISAN software has been used to locate the identified local earthquakes, which were recorded at least three or more stations of the Kachchh seismological network. Three component spectra of S-wave are being inverted by using the Levenberg-Marquardt non-linear inversion technique, wherein the inversion scheme is formulated based on ω 2 source model. SAC Software (seismic analysis code) is being utilized for calculating three-component displacement and velocity spectra of S-wave. The displacement spectra are used for estimating corner frequency (in Hz) and long period spectral level (in nm-s). These two parameters play a key role in estimating earthquake source parameters. The crustal {Q}0 values have been computed simultaneously for each component of three-component broadband seismograph. The estimated seismic moment (M0) and source radius ( r) using S-wave spectra range from 7.03E+12 to 5.36E+15 N-m and 178.56 to 565.21 m, respectively. The corner frequencies for S-wave vary from 3.025 to 7.425 Hz. We also estimated the radiated energy (ES) using velocity spectra, which is varying from 2.76E+06 to 4.07E+11 Joules. The estimated apparent stress drop and static stress drop values range from 0.01 to 2.56 and 0.53 to 36.79 MPa, respectively. Our study also reveals that estimated Q0 values vary from 119.0 to 7229.5, with an average Q0 value of 701. Another important parameter, by which the earthquake rupture process can be recognized, is Zuniga parameter. It suggests that most of the Kachchh events follow the frictional overshoot model. Our estimated static stress drop values are higher than the apparent stress drop values. And the stress drop values are quite larger for intraplate earthquakes than the interplate earthquakes.

  14. Tomographically-imaged subducted slabs and magmatic history of Caribbean and Pacific subduction beneath Colombia

    Bernal-Olaya, R.; Mann, P.; Vargas, C. A.; Koulakov, I.

We define the length and geometry of eastward and southeastward-subducting slabs beneath northwestern South America in Colombia using ~100,000 earthquake events recorded by the Colombian National Seismic Network from 1993 to 2012. Methods include: hypocenter relocation, compilation of focal mechanisms, and P and S wave tomographic calculations performed using LOTOS and Seisan. The margins of Colombia include four distinct subduction zones based on slab dip: 1) in northern Colombia, 12-16-km-thick oceanic crust subducts at a modern GPS rate of 20 mm/yr in a direction of 110 degrees at a shallow angle of 8 degrees; as a result of its low dip, Pliocene-Pleistocene volcanic rocks are present 400 km from the frontal thrust; magmatic arc migration to the east records 800 km of subduction since 58 Ma ago (Paleocene) with shallow subduction of the Caribbean oceanic plateau starting ~24-33 Ma (Miocene); at depths of 90-150 km, the slab exhibits a negative velocity anomaly we associate with pervasive fracturing; 2) in the central Colombia-Panama area, we define an area of 30-km-thick crust of the Panama arc colliding/subducting at a modern 30/mm in a direction of 95 degrees; the length of this slab shows subduction/collision initiated after 20 Ma (Middle Miocene); we call this feature the Panama indenter since it has produced a V-shaped indentation of the Colombian margin and responsible for widespread crustal deformation and topographic uplift in Colombia; an incipient subduction area is forming near the Panama border with intermediate earthquakes at an eastward dip of 70 degrees to depths of ~150 km; this zone is not visible on tomographic images; 3) a 250-km-wide zone of Miocene oceanic crust of the Nazca plate flanking the Panama indenter subducts at a rate of 25 mm/yr in a direction of 55 degrees and at a normal dip of 40 degrees; the length of this slab suggests subduction began at ~5 Ma; 4) the Caldas tear defines a major dip change to the south where a 35 degrees

  16. Seismicity And Accretion Process Along The North Mid-Atlantic Ridge From The SIRENA Autonomous Hydrophone Data

    Perrot, J.; Goslin, J.; Dziak, R. P.; Haxel, J. H.; Maia, M. A.; Tisseau, C.; Royer, J.

The seismicity of the North Atlantic Ocean was recorded by the SIRENA array of 6 autonomous underwater hydrophones (AUH) moored within the SOFAR channel on the flanks of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The instruments were deployed north of the Azores Plateau between 40° and 50°N from June 2002 to September 2003. The low attenuation properties of the SOFAR channel for earthquake T-wave propagation result in a detection threshold reduction to a magnitude completeness level (Mc) of ~2.8, to be compared to a Mc~4.7 for MAR events recorded by land-based seismic networks. A spatio-temporal analysis was performed over the 1696 events localized inside the SIRENA array. For hydrophone-derived catalogs, the acoustic magnitude, or Source Level (SL), is used as a measure of earthquake size. The ''source level completeness'', above which the data set is complete, is SLc=208 dB. The SIRENA catalog was searched for swarms using the cluster software of the SEISAN distribution. A minimum SL of 210 dB was chosen to detect a possible mainshock, and all subsequent events within 40 days following the possible mainshock, located within a radius of 15 km from the mainshock were considered as events of the swarm. 15 km correspond to the maximum fault length in a slow-ridge context. 11 swarms with more than 15 events were detected along the MAR between 40°et 50°N during the SIRENA deployment. The maximum number of earthquakes in a swarm is 40 events. The SL vs. time distribution within each swarm allowed a first discrimination between the swarms occurring in a tectonic context and those which can be attributed to volcanic processes, the latter showing a more constant SL vs. time distribution. Moreover, the swarms occurring in a tectonic context show a "mainshock-afterschock" distribution of the cumulative number of events vs. time, fitting a Modified Omori Law. The location of tectonic and volcanic swarms correlates well with regions where a positive and negative Mantle Bouguer

  17. The Colombia Seismological Network

    Blanco Chia, J. F.; Poveda, E.; Pedraza, P.

The latest seismological equipment and data processing instrumentation installed at the Colombia Seismological Network (RSNC) are described. System configuration, network operation, and data management are discussed. The data quality and the new seismological products are analyzed. The main purpose of the network is to monitor local seismicity with a special emphasis on seismic activity surrounding the Colombian Pacific and Caribbean oceans, for early warning in case a Tsunami is produced by an earthquake. The Colombian territory is located at the South America northwestern corner, here three tectonic plates converge: Nazca, Caribbean and the South American. The dynamics of these plates, when resulting in earthquakes, is continuously monitored by the network. In 2012, the RSNC registered in 2012 an average of 67 events per day; from this number, a mean of 36 earthquakes were possible to be located well. In 2010 the network was also able to register an average of 67 events, but it was only possible to locate a mean of 28 earthquakes daily. This difference is due to the expansion of the network. The network is made up of 84 stations equipped with different kind of broadband 40s, 120s seismometers, accelerometers and short period 1s sensors. The signal is transmitted continuously in real-time to the Central Recording Center located at Bogotá, using satellite, telemetry, and Internet. Moreover, there are some other stations which are required to collect the information in situ. Data is recorded and processed digitally using two different systems, EARTHWORM and SEISAN, which are able to process and share the information between them. The RSNC has designed and implemented a web system to share the seismological data. This innovative system uses tools like Java Script, Oracle and programming languages like PHP to allow the users to access the seismicity registered by the network almost in real time as well as to download the waveform and technical details. The coverage

  19. Attenuation Characteristics of the Armutlu Peninsula (NW Turkey) Using Coda Q

Yavuz, Evrim; Çaka, Deniz; Tunç, Berna; Woith, Heiko; Gottfried Lühr, Birger; Barış, Şerif

Attenuation characteristic of seismic waves was determined using coda Q in the frame of MARsite (MARsite has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement No 308417). Data from 82 earthquakes recorded in 2013-2014 in the Armutlu Peninsula and its vicinity by 9 ARNET seismic stations were used for processing. The earthquake magnitudes (Ml) and depths vary from 1.5 to 3.7 and 1.2-16.9 km, respectively. Epicentral distances closer than 90 km were selected to ensure better signal-to-noise ratios. Lapse times between 20 seconds and 40 seconds at intervals of 5 seconds were used for the calculation of the coda wave quality factor. The coda windows were filtered at central frequencies of 1.5, 3, 6, 9 and 12 Hz bandpass filter. To obtain reliable results, only data with signal-to-noise ratios greater than 5 and correlation coefficents higher than 0.7 were used. The SEISAN software and one of its subroutines (CODAQ) were used for data processing and analyses. In the whole study area, Qc=(51±4)f^(0.91±0.04) for 20 seconds, Qc=(77±7)f^(0.80±0.04) for 30 seconds and Qc=(112±13)f^(0.72±0.06) for 40 seconds lapse times are obtained for coda wave quality factor. The observed quality factor is dependent on frequency and lapse time. The results indicate that the upper lithosphere is more heterogeneous and seismically more active than the lower lithosphere as expected in the region which is tectonically complex refering to the effects of the North Anatolian Fault Zone. By considering earthquake clusters and recorded stations, the scattering area was drawn. The intersection of the scattered areas for 20 seconds lapse time is covering all stations. Quality factor in 1 Hz and frequency dependent values were calculated separately and for the intersection of all scattered areas. Calculated Qo and n values of the intersection area are 50 and 0.89, respectively. Hence, the Qo and n values

  20. Seismicity And Accretion Processes Along The Mid-Atlantic Ridge south of the Azores using data from the MARCHE Autonomous Hydrophone Array

Perrot, Julie; Cevatoglu, Melis; Cannat, Mathilde; Escartin, Javier; Maia, Marcia; Tisseau, Chantal; Dziak, Robert; Goslin, Jean

The seismicity of the South Atlantic Ocean has been recorded by the MARCHE network of 4 autonomous underwater hydrophones (AUH) moored within the SOFAR channel on the flanks of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The instruments were deployed south of the Azores Plateau between 32° and 39°N from July 2005 to August 2008. The low attenuation properties of the SOFAR channel for earthquake T-wave propagation result in a detection threshold reduction from a magnitude completeness level (Mc) of ~4.3 for MAR events recorded by the land-based seismic networks to Mc=2.1 using this hydrophone array. A spatio-temporal analysis has been performed among the 5600 events recorded inside the MARCHE array. Most events are distributed along the ridge between lat. 39°N on the Azores Platform and the Rainbow (36°N) segment. In the hydrophone catalogue, acoustic magnitude (Source Level, SL) is used as a measure of earthquake size. The source level above which the data set is complete is SLc=205 dB. We look for seismic swarms using the cluster software of the SEISAN package. The criterion used are a minimum SL of 210 to detect a possible mainshock, and a radius of 30 km and a time window of 40 days after this mainshock (Cevatoglu, 2010, Goslin et al., 2012). 7 swarms with more than 15 events are identified using this approach between 32°et 39°N of latitude. The maximum number of earthquake in a swarm is 57 events. This result differs from the study of Simao et al. (2010) as we processed a further year of data and selected sequences with fewer events. Looking at the distribution of the SL as a function of time after the mainshock, we discuss the possible mechanism of these earthquakes : tectonic events with a "mainshock-aftershock" distribution fitting a modified Omori law or volcanic events showing more constant SL values. We also present the geophysical setting of these 7 swarms, using gravity, bathymetry, and available local geological data. This study illustrates the potential of

  1. Focal mechanism and stress analyses for main tectonic zones in Albania

Dushi, Edmond; Koçi, Rexhep; Begu, Enkela; Bozo, Rrezart

In this study, a number of 33 moderate earthquakes for the period 2013-2015, ranging in magnitude within 2.2 ≤ MW ≤ 4.9 and located within the Albanian territory, have been analyzed. As an earthquake prone country, situated at the frontal collision boundary between Adria microplate and Eurasian tectonic plate, Albania is characterized frequently by micro earthquakes, many moderate and seldom by strong ones. It is evidenced that the whole territory is divided in two different tectonic domains, correspondingly the outer and the inner domain, showing different stress regime as clearly evidenced based on earthquake focal mechanism and geodetic studies. Although strong earthquakes are clearly related to faults in tectonically active areas, moderate events are more frequent revealing valuable information on this purpose. All the studied events are selected to be well-recorded by a maximum possible number of the local broadband (BB) seismological stations of Albanian Seismological Network (ASN), although regional stations have been used as well to constrain the solution. Earthquakes are grouped according to their location, within three well-defined tectonic zones, namely: Adriatic-Ionian (AI), Lushnja-Elbasani-Dibra (LED) and Ohrid-Korça (OK). For each event, the seismic moment M0is determined, through spectral analyses. Moment values vary ranging 1012 - 1015 Nm, for the Adriatic-Ionian (AI) outer zone; 1013 - 1016 Nm, for the Lushnja-Elbasani-Dibra (LED) transversal zone, which cuts through both the outer and the inner domains and 1012 - 1014 Nm, for the Ohrid-Korça (OK), north-south trending inner zone. Focal mechanism solutions (FMS) have been determined for each earthquake, based on the robust first motion polarities method, as applied in the FOCMEC (Seisan 10.1) routine. Using the Michael's linear bootstrap invertion on FMS, a stress analysis is applied. Results show the minimum compressional stress directions variation: σ1 370/270, σ23030/80 and σ31980

  2. CRISIS2012: An Updated Tool to Compute Seismic Hazard

    Ordaz, M.; Martinelli, F.; Meletti, C.; D'Amico, V.

CRISIS is a computer tool for probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), whose development started in the late 1980's at the Instituto de Ingeniería, UNAM, Mexico. It started circulating outside the Mexican borders at the beginning of the 1990's, when it was first distributed as part of SEISAN tools. Throughout the years, CRISIS has been used for seismic hazard studies in several countries in Latin America (Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina and Chile), and in many other countries of the World. CRISIS has always circulated free of charge for non-commercial applications. It is worth noting that CRISIS has been mainly written by people that are, at the same time, PSHA practitioners. Therefore, the development loop has been relatively short, and most of the modifications and improvements have been made to satisfy the needs of the developers themselves. CRISIS has evolved from a rather simple FORTRAN code to a relatively complex program with a friendly graphical interface, able to handle a variety of modeling possibilities for source geometries, seismicity descriptions and ground motion prediction models (GMPM). We will describe some of the improvements made for the newest version of the code: CRISIS 2012.These improvements, some of which were made in the frame of the Italian research project INGV-DPC S2 (, funded by the Dipartimento della Protezione Civile (DPC; National Civil Protection Department), include: A wider variety of source geometries A wider variety of seismicity models, including the ability to handle non-Poissonian occurrence models and Poissonian smoothed-seismicity descriptions. Enhanced capabilities for using different kinds of GMPM: attenuation tables, built-in models and generalized attenuation models. In the case of built-in models, there is, by default, a set ready to use in CRISIS, but additional custom GMPMs

  4. Seismic monitoring at Deception Island volcano (Antarctica): the 2010-2011 survey

    Martín, R.; Carmona, E.; Almendros, J.; Serrano, I.; Villaseñor, A.; Galeano, J.

the seismic activity and an efficient seismo-volcanic surveillance. The data are processed and analyzed using the SEISAN database management software. In addition to the seismic network, we deployed a small-aperture seismic array south of Fumarole Bay. It is composed by 9 vertical and 1 three-component short-period stations. The 24-bit data acquisition system samples these 12 channels at 100 sps. There is also a permanent seismic station operating since 2008 and located near GdC, that is very useful for the preliminary evaluation of the seismicity at the start of the survey. This station is composed by a 16-s electrolytic seismometer (Eentec SP400) and a 24-bit datalogger (Eentec DR4000) sampling at 100 sps. During the 2010-2011 survey we identified 33 regional earthquakes, 80 volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes, and 929 long-period (LP) events. The volcanic alert system has remained green (the lowest level) at all times. The seismic activity has been similar to previous surveys and remained within limits that are normal for the island.
