Full Text Available Velyky Lug is a unique natural complex which has a large biogeographical, ecological, environmental, historical and recreational value. The National Nature Park “Velyky Lug” was only created as recently as 2006.The park is located in Zaporizhzhya region, 15–18 km south of the city Zaporizhzhya, within the limits of floodplain area of the Dnepr river, which broadens to a width of over 20 kmbetween Bilen’ke and Vasilivka (north-eastern part of the Kakhovskoe reservoir. This enormous expansion of the floodplain (about 80,000 ha which is situated between the Dnepr river and its tributary the Kins’ka was in historical times was called the Kin’ski Floodplain or Great Meadow. In modern times this territory is almost completely flooded by the waters of the Kakhovskoe reservoir. Remnants of natural habitats have been preserved along the river banks – in the form of little valleys and ravines which extend all the shore and also islands which appeared in 1956 when the reservoir was flooded. The overall area of the park “Velyky Lug” is 16,756 ha. Within the territory of the park “Velyky Lug” we have recorded 27 species of Lepidoptera which have various levels of conservation status. The taxonomical structure of the complex varies and included representatives of all basic families of moth and day butterflies which have species that are protected by law. In a taxonomical relation this complex is formed by the representatives of 11 families (Zygaenidae, Saturniidae, Sphingidae, Noctuidae, Arctiidae, Hesperiidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, Nymphalidae, Satyridae, Lycaenidae. Zoogeographical analysis of the species that are protected in the territory of the park can be classified into 5 basic groups (Palearctic – 26%, Pontokazach – 26%, Mediterranean– 22%, Eurosiberian – 15%, European – 11%. Analysis of the biotopic advantages of the protected Lepidoptera species present in the territory of the park showed representatives from all

  4. Religinė ir tautinė tapatybė Antano Baranausko poetinėje autorefleksijoje | Religious and national identity in Antanas Baranauskas’s reflection of the poetical self

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Dalia Čiočytė

    2006-01-01

Full Text Available The article seeks to investigate Antanas Baranauskas’s self-conception from the theoretical perspective of phenomenology and theology of literature. The focus of attention are the poet’s early poems, as they demonstrate intensity of the poetical self-consciousness. Baranauskas interprets both religious and patriotic sense of the poetical writing. He contemplates the transcendental meaning of poetry, creates the link between romantic / Biblical prophet and himself as a poet, between the Christian concept of neighbour and national feelings. Baranauskas’s literary thought is ingenious and attentive to semantic undertones.

  20. Baranauskų Silva rerum | Silva rerum of the Baranauskas family

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Tomas Andriukonis

    2012-01-01

Full Text Available This article describes a manuscript book Ułamki…, dated to 1855. This silva rerum, created in a rural environment, continues in a peculiar way the tradition of manuscripts prepared outside the limits of official institutions. Ułamki… was prepared within the textual community of the Baranauskas family. This community encompasses the Baranauskas family, and its structure repeats the patriarchic model of a family. Antanas and Anupras Baranauskas – authors of Ułamki… – dedicate this silva rerum to Jonas Baranauskas – the central figure of this textual community as well as the head of the family. The part prepared by Anupras Baranauskas is composed of texts and drawings (sketches for art lessons and maps which come from his school years. The part by Antanas Baranauskas is composed of poems authored by himself, which might be read as a story of his attempts to secure a position of a scribe as close to home as possible. Both parts include variations on the theme of tension between estrangement and identity. The book itself is understood as an effort to overcome this opposition by means of a written text as well as to vindicate identity and extant links within the textual community and at the same time the family. It is this effort that provides unity to this book, which prima facie seems rather diffuse.

  4. Spreading and accumulation of heavy metals in soils of railway-side areas

    2015-09-01

Full Text Available Following the landscape-environmental survey of the lands adjoining the single-track railway No. 193 Chop – Uzhhorod – Sianky – Lviv within Zakarpatska oblast (Transcarpathia, we have identified certain regularities in the spreading, accumulation and dispersion of some heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni in soils. For the purpose of study, the soils were taken at different distances from the railway (0, 25, 50 and 100 m within the following key points of the railway under study: Chop, Uzhhorod, Perechyn, Velyky Berezny, and Volosianka. The soil samples taken at the distance of 250 m from the railway were assumed the control group. Mass concentration of acid-soluble forms of heavy metals, considered as the main anthropogenic constituent of heavy metal stock in soils, was determined by means of atomic absorption analysis. Content of heavy metals in soils under study was compared with background data available in scientific literature. The results were evaluated by calculation of concentration factor commonly considered as a reliable and self-descriptive ecological constituent. In general, increased content of heavy metals was shown to be peculiar for soils that directly adjoin the railways (to 25 m; their content in remoter soils decreases considerably. In the control soils (250 m from the railway, the content of heavy metals reportedly significantly decreases as compared with other soils; however partial accumulation of lead, zinc and nickel compounds does take place there too. Dependence between the accumulations of heavy metals and the distance from the railway was described by polynomial equations. Such deviation from the linear distribution can be explained by the height of the railway embankments, absorbing properties of the railway-side plants, migration processes in soils, and direction of prevailing winds. Zinc was established to have the highest value of concentration factor (Кс = 1.04–10.54. Pollutant accumulation was most

  5. Drug Trafficking in Cosmopolitan Culture: A View from the Colombian Experience

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    María Stella Baracaldo Méndez

    2013-08-01

Full Text Available Drug trafficking has been a ubiquitous crime on the American continent since the 1980s, and addressing it has required international policy to function beyond the physical boundaries of the nation-state, whatever its role is: as a producer, as a go-between for its sale, or as a consumer. The manifestations of drug trafficking are criminal, multiple and incalculable. Its behavior as merchandise, subject to supply and demand, has benefitted from the process of globalization, particularly with the availability of technology and IT, which it has made available in local and regional societies. According to Ulrich Beck, Eduardo Pastrana, Irvin Waller, Antanas Mockus and Ariel Francais, drug trafficking is mainly a globalized product, a successful business, a cosmopolitan risk, and a cultural component that is difficult to eradicate with wartime policies because in Colombia violence is not an accidental product, it is multicausal. To address this phenomenon, the only universal regulators are human rights and civil ethics. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5377/rpsp.v2i0.1193

    2017-01-01

Full Text Available In the first part of this paper, we approach the citizenship culture as it was developed in Colombia by the former mayor of Bogotá, Antanas Mockus, taking into account both the conceptual structure and the methodological principles of implementation, namely, the internalization of the rule and the creation of communication strategies aimed at achieving willingly cooperation. After making a psychosocial approach of the citizenship culture in the light of the theory of the social representations, we present the results of a prototypical analysis based on free association data from a sample of 156 teenagers who live at Mangueira slum, in Rio de Janeiro, exercise that enabled us to make a socio-cultural and political reading from the fulfillment or failure of the law. Finally, as an educational proposal, we hand in the results of a participatory action research —Aventureiros—, a program of education for citizenship focused on children, based on the very Colombian methodological principles of the citizenship culture and adapted to the Rio de Janeiro favela environment.

Full Text Available Theodicy is a philosophical and theological attempt to reconcile the traditional divine characteristics of omnibenevolence, omnipotence, and omniscience with the occurrence of evil and suffering in the human and natural world. The contradiction between the omnipotence of God and the evil that exists in the world is the main question of the philosophical reflection of God. The article concentrates upon the complicated term of theodicy and actualizes it in the contexts of literature. Literary theodicy is a form of existential search for God: it is literary thinking about the philosophical possibility and impossibility of God’s existence, about the paradox of God’s love and existential evil, about the justification of God in the face of innocent suffering. The works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Albert Camus are analyzed as the highlands of literary theodicy. In the theodic thought of Lithuanian literature, three main directions are distinguished. They are (1 interpretation of free will (Kristijonas Donelaitis, Vincas Krėvė and others, (2 linking the nation’s sufferings (occupation, exile with the idea of spiritual growth, and (3 the reflection of the mystery of God (Šatrijos Ragana, Bernardas Brazdžionis, Antanas Škėma.

Six priorities proposed for government experience are articulated around one: civic culture. Culture that should be disseminated, learned and implementation from train in town, then so is generate sense of belonging, would facilitate urban coexistence and would lead to the respect of the common heritage and recognition of the rights and duties of citizens. Lukauskas’ „Sermons” (18th c. and the didactic prose of the 19th c. because the data obtained did not reveal any change in the attribute phrase word order.Preliminary results enable us to put forward several hypotheses, the most important of these is as follows: in written works the standard attribute phrase with the preposed adjective and the postposed genitive noun (actually its placement was not determined has been preserved for almost 300 years.

  15. Adequate prescribing of medication does not necessarily translate into good control of diabetes mellitus

Full Text Available Antanas Norkus, Rytas Ostrauskas, Rimantas Žalinkevičius, Lina Radzevičienė, Rita Šulcaitė Institute of Endocrinology, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Kaunas, Lithuania Background: Patients with diabetes mellitus in Lithuania have access to almost all the latest blood glucose-lowering drugs available in the rest of the world. This study evaluated the effects of prescribing of treatment (oral medications, insulin, or both in Lithuanian patients with type 1 or 2 diabetes and poor blood glucose control. Methods: The relevant information was obtained from specialized questionnaires completed by 26 consulting endocrinologists in Lithuania between October 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008. The study cohort comprised 865 randomly selected patients with diabetes mellitus and a glycosylated (HbA1c level ≥7%. In total, there were 95 patients with type 1 diabetes and 770 with type 2 diabetes. Results: Linear regression for patients with type 1 diabetes revealed a weak trend towards higher doses of insulin reflecting lower HbA1c values. The mean dose of insulin in patients with type 1 diabetes before an endocrinology consultation was 57.1 ± 15.7 U/day (0.8 ± 0.2 U/kg, which increased significantly to 63.3 ± 16.5 U/day (0.9 ± 0.2 U/kg after an endocrinology consultation (P < 0.05. Treatment prescribed for patients with type 2 diabetes depended on the duration of disease. Earlier treatment recommended for 68% of patients with type 2 diabetes was subsequently changed by the endocrinologist. Linear regression showed that the insulin dose prescribed before a specialist consultation as well as that recommended by an endocrinologist was significantly correlated with body mass index. Conclusion: Appropriate prescribing of blood glucose-lowering drugs does not always translate into good metabolic control of diabetes mellitus. The mean HbA1c was 8.5% ± 1.3% in patients with type 2 diabetes treated with oral drugs alone versus 9.0% ± 1.3% in those

  16. Stable isotopes in Lithuanian bioarcheological material

Investigation of bioarcheological material of ancient human populations allows us to understand the subsistence behavior associated with various adaptations to the environment. Feeding habits are essential to the survival and growth of ancient populations. Stable isotope analysis is accepted tool in paleodiet (Schutkowski et al, 1999) and paleoenvironmental (Zernitskaya et al, 2014) studies. However, stable isotopes can be useful not only in investigating human feeding habits but also in describing social and cultural structure of the past populations (Le Huray and Schutkowski, 2005). Only few stable isotope investigations have been performed before in Lithuanian region suggesting a quite uniform diet between males and females and protein intake from freshwater fish and animal protein. Previously, stable isotope analysis has only been used to study a Stone Age population however, more recently studies have been conducted on Iron Age and Late medieval samples (Jacobs et al, 2009). Anyway, there was a need for more precise examination. Stable isotope analysis were performed on human bone collagen and apatite samples in this study. Data represented various ages (from 5-7th cent. to 18th cent.). Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis on medieval populations indicated that individuals in studied sites in Lithuania were almost exclusively consuming C3 plants, C3 fed terrestrial animals, and some freshwater resources. Current investigation demonstrated social differences between elites and country people and is promising in paleodietary and daily life reconstruction. Acknowledgement I thank prof. dr.

They are instrumental in promoting the writer and his work, in bringing it closer to the ordinary readership. Particularly so in Lithuania which has a long and lively theatrical tradition of more than 400 years. The Kaunas State Theatre established in 1922 became an important centre in the cultural life of Lithuania and was the only professional theatre organization in Lithuania until 1931, which dramatized and performed Dickens’s works, among others. Stage adaptations played an important role in the reception of Dickens’s art, particularly in the inter-war period in the 1920s and 1930s: they were instrumental in the promotion of Dickensian image, in the dissemination of his writing and in enhancing its popularity; thus Dickens’s name became firmly entrenched in the Lithuanian cultural context. For general readers and theatre audiences Dickens became the most famous, the most representative and the most popular English writer, regarded as an iconic figure in English literature, in stature competing only with Shakespeare. The first theatre production of Dickens’s work in Lithuania was A Christmas Carol; it was put on stage by the famous director Antanas Sutkus in 1927. It was followed by stage adaptations of The Chimes, Oliver Twist and The Cricket on the Hearth.A theatrical production of Dickens’s novel The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was put on stage on September 29, 2002. Adapted and directed by the actor Sigitas Račkys in early twenty-first century at the Klaipėda Drama Theatre, it really came as a surprise given the temper and tenor of the times which are not very favourable for the reception of Dickens’s writing. And, naturally, the response to it was ambivalent and controversial.By all evidence, the performance was probably not a very successful attempt at the stage production of Dickens’s Pickwick in spite of the

Full Text Available This article presents and discusses fourteen drawings that portray a human and were found in manuscripts and printed books (documents that were actively used in Lithuania from 17th to 19th centuries. All the drawings were made in the margins of the documents. For the authors the drawings were not planned work but more like quips, scribbles and doodles. Therefore the terms portrait graffiti and (as a synonym portrait marginalia are used to describe the discussed portraits. According to the formal classification of marginal drawings (suggested by J. Liskeviciene two of the examined marginal portraits (no. 10 and 14 are classed as seperate and finished works with their own composition; ten marginal portraits (no. 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13 represent the readers (document users sketch like drawings. Two other portraits (no. 1 and 3 are just scribbles that have nothing to do with artictic perception and are very close to book graffiti. From the artistic approcah the most sophisticated of the marginal portraits are “the hunt scene” (no. 14 and the late (first half of the 19th century “portrait of the teacher” (no. 13. In the viewpoint of documentary and social communication the discussed marginal drawings did not have a direct addressee. They were made not for public but for personal use. Paleographical, structural and content analysis of the document showed that the author of the “bearded nobleman” portrait (no. 2 could have been the elder of Merkine Antanas Kazimieras Sapiega. The political realia of Grand Duchy of Lithuania (from now GDL are reflected by the heart shaped portrait of a youngster who we can guess is portrayed weeping over the countries misfortunes and internal disagreements duringthe period of foreight military interventions in the years from 1733 to 1736. It was forbiden for scribes to daub on court files and other official GDL documents therefore the discussed graffiti could be linked to psychological stress and
