The new direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs represent a great hope for millions of chronically infected individuals because their use may lead to excellent cure rates with fewer side effects. In Latin America, the high prevalence of HCV genotype 1 infection and the significant association of Native American ancestry with risk predictive single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs in IFNL4 and ITPA genes highlight the need to implement new treatment regimens in these populations. However, the universal accessibility to DAAs is still not a reality in the region as their high cost is one of the major, although not the only, limiting factors for their broad implementation. Therefore, under these circumstances, could the assessment of host genetic markers be a useful tool to prioritize DAA treatment until global access to these new drugs can be achieved? This review will summarize the scientific evidences and the potential implications of HCV pharmacogenomics in this rapidly evolving era of anti-HCV drug development. Keywords: hepatitis C virus, pharmacogenomics, PEG-IFN/RBV, DAAs, Latin America

Open-cast mining has caused complete destruction of the quarternary and tertiary bedrock in mining regions, including destruction of the aquifers formerly used for freshwater and service water supply. The large-area, long-term lowering of the groundwater level resulted in irreversible changes in the minerals and materials concentrations in the aquifers. Filling-up of open-cast mines with overburden material resulted in spoilbanks with complex structures and heterogeneous hydraulic properties which may affect the quality of the groundwater and surface water systems in the long run. So far, descriptions of the hydrological processes in spoilbanks and of the acidification processes, minerals reforming processes and metal mobilisations are based on the assumption of homogeneous water flow in the dumped sediments which can be no more than a rough approximation. In particular, the geochemical and hydraulic long-term behaviour of the spoilbanks (stability, effects on new groundwater formation, water quality) are considered in none of the available models.

3D outcrop data, including geostatistical modelling and fluid flow simulations The case study is a turbidite reservoir analog in Northern Spain (Ainsa). In this case study, we can compare reservoir models that have been built with conventional data set (1D pseudowells), and reservoir model built from 3D outcrop data directly used to constrain the reservoir architecture. This approach allows us to assess the benefits of integrating geotagged 3D outcrop data into reservoir models.

modelled pavement scenario; moreover, the horn was compared with a previously-implemented ground-coupled bowtie antenna. The numerical results indicate that air-coupled antennas receive clear reflections from distinct layers within the pavement but they are incapable in the considered setting to detect cracks filled with air. On the other hand, by using ground-coupled antennas it is easier to interpret hyperbolic responses from the buried cracks. The developed modelling framework is a powerful tool in evaluating the performance of high-frequency GPR transducers in realistic situations and this approach can lead to better design of GPR antennas. The third STSM was carried out by Sonia Santos Assunçao visiting Klisthenis Dimitriadis at Geoservice (Greece). They worked at the non-destructive inspection of the Tholos Tomb of Acharnon. The unknown thickness of the Tomb walls was determined by using a GPR. Data were plotted in impressive circular radargrams. Discontinuities in the measured data were identified and associated to fissures or voids, indicating internal and superficial damages of the Tomb. A combination of GPR with electrical resistivity tomography allowed a more accurate data interpretation. Vibrations in the Tomb were quantified by using seismic measurements and endoscopy was used to confirm the thickness of the walls. During the fourth STSM, Philippe De Smedt visited Immo Trinks at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology. The research activities regarded the reconstruction of prehistoric environments at Stonehenge, by means of multiple electromagnetic survey methods. Different datasets were processed, analysed and compared: data from a multi-receiver electromagnetic induction survey (collected by the ORBit research group from Ghent University, Belgium), and data from a 3D GPR survey (collected by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Virtual Archaeology and Archaeological Prospection, Austria). The aim was that of

  12. Possible Role of Ice in the Synthesis of Polymeric Compounds

-Crick base-pairing nucleobase were higher than in non-base-pairing systems cases where hydrogen bond based pairing is not favoured [7]-this was even the found for low H-bridging uridine monomers [7, 8]. The presence of templates fur-ther allows the synthesis of long complementary strands [9]. Thus, template-directed elongation of RNA in the eutectic phase of the water-ice system seems possible. Recently, Miller's group [10, 11] in San Diego further established that dilute solutions of ammo-nium cyanide maintained frozen at -78 C could promote the synthesis of nucleobases, although with rather low yields. The catalytic activity of a RNA-ligase ribozyme was also detected in the eutectic phase [12]. All the observations on the promotion of synthetic reactions in the eutectic phase in water-ice suggest that the cold conditions with transient thawing periods could have allowed the formation of RNA monomers on our Earth and possibly on other icy planets.
