In recent decades education is increasingly perceived as an instrument for generating economic growth and enhancing production. This article examines the grounds on which Tibor Scitovsky, who was one of the leading economists of twentieth…

  2. Reconstruction of Ladislav Palfi's pioneering work in the development of pianism in Macedonia

    Jordanoska Trena

    2017-01-01

Full Text Available Ladislav Palfi (b Subotica, 1924 - d Skopje, 2008 is considered as one of the most distinguished figures in the development of art of piano playing and piano pedagogy in Macedonia, particularly in the period after WWII. The reconstruction of Palfi's activities has been done through analysis of artifact databases, with a special emphasis on Palfi's audio recordings and concert repertory. The paper examines the structure of the main artifact catalogue, as well as the two extracted sub-catalogues; and reports the results of the statistical analysis of the data, which are at the end synthesized in four main points of Palfi's activity significant for the postwar development of Macedonian music culture. Macedonian music artists, until recently, were not the central topic of Macedonian musicological papers. Macedonian composers were the ones that were mainly analyzed, and for obvious reasons: it was considered that the compositional creativity has been the main identifier of the Macedonian music culture. On the other hand, the analysis of compositional work has more available physical artifacts, scores, audio and video recordings. The interest for the Macedonian pianism in the recent years, corresponds to the new climate in Macedonian musicology where, given the sufficient temporal distance, Macedonian musicology can objectively assess the music culture and history, and its protagonists. First Macedonian pianist and piano pedagogues can be located in the first music schools, the Macedonian Opera and the ensembles of the Macedonian Radio. Most of the piano teachers in this initial period of professional art of piano playing in Macedonia were performing as accompanists both on the concert stages and the Macedonian Opera, and were performing regularly on the live programs on Radio Skopje. Among them stands out the name of Ladislav Palfi, which up to this day has been synonymous with the first steps of Macedonian pianism. In the memory of the wider

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Zuzana Pokorná

    2017-11-01

Full Text Available The article examines the prosaic works of Ladislav Dvořák (1920–1983, specifically the collection of short stories entitled Šavle meče. It analyses the construction of Dvořák’s texts with regard to their significant aspect, the connection between reality and the world depicted in the narrative. It argues against the approach that take the stories as a source for study of the author’s biography and reverse the relation, thus the author’s life is merely a basic material for constructing the literary universe. The analysis is based on the theories of Přemysl Blažíček and Milan Jankovič, who treat the specifics of creating meaning in literature. With the help of the concept of ‘objectivity’, adapted for literary interpretation, the role of facts, description and narrator in the text is explored. The study concludes that the meaning in the short stories of Ladislav Dvořák is created mainly by situatedness of the narrator, whose goal is to mediate his own life experience in the process of its formation and its indefiniteness.

The connections are examined in the writings of the two authors, especially in their poetic reinterpretations of the Orpheus myth and in the themes of the overcoming of death, the impossibility of death, and the experience of one’s own death. In this context, the article also suggests connections with the ideas of other authors, such as Camille Flammarion, Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, Georges Bataille, and Ladislav Klíma.

  10. Translation from the Classical Languages in the Second Half of the 19th Century

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Matej Hriberšek

    2007-07-01

Full Text Available In addition to affecting the Slovene education system, the Austrian denationalising policy in the second half of the 19th century had a direct impact on translation. Most of the already scarce Slovene philologists were appointed to posts outside the Slovene national territory. The conditions only began to improve in the 1860s, with the translation activity taken up by the first students of the newly established philology courses at the University of Vienna (Ladislav Hrovat, Matija Valjavec, etc.. More often than not, however, the translators were not philologists. The first longer classical texts published in Slovene were individual books of the Homeric epics, Xenophon’s Memorabilia, Plato’s dialogues Apology and Crito, Virgil's Georgics, and Sophocles' Ajax (the complete Bible, of course, had been translated much earlier, but it holds a special place in the history of translation. The translations published as books represent the first Slovene book-format editions of the ancient classics, but most appeared in magazines and newspapers . Many translations met with the same fate as a number of contemporary Slovene classical-language textbooks: they remained in manuscript because of insufficient funds (the publishers were unwilling to run the risk of such enterprises, for fear that their investment would not pay, and also because of the national-awakening emphasis on Slovene, which was accompanied by a preference for translating from other modern languages, particularly Slavic ones. A noteworthy example of these unpublished translations is Caesar’s De Bello Gallico as prepared by the Franciscan Ladislav Hrovat. From the beginnings to the present, Slovene translations of the Greek and Latin classics have displayed a marked predominance of poetry, with prose works remaining in the minority.

    2016-03-01

Full Text Available This article deals with the structural interpretations of the ongoing crisis. The author considers the approaches of Joseph Alois Schumpeter and Tibor Scitovsky that thematize the long-run destiny of capitalism. The viewpoint is constituted as the relation between the structural socio-economic tendencies and existential constellations. What is addressed by the crisis is capitalism as a dependent system. The author emphasizes that capitalism cannot survive without the outside sphere, reciprocal interactions, economics of community, eco-system and complex eco-social moments. This can be applied to the frequently mentioned embeddedness which is related to Polanyi and other researchers who are influenced by Polanyi’s concepts. Embeddedness can be analyzed through the holon, from the inside perspective. Only comprehensive perspective enables to see the entire horizon, since capitalism cannot summarize the eco-system, not even with the most sophisticated techniques that recognize monetary expressions.

Full Text Available In 1960s Czechoslovakia, experimental poetry became an important part of the conceptual turnaround in art. The language in this poetry had its own weight as an object, which, however, lost its function and participated the programs of its own self-destruction. The language of poetry interceded in various fields — the creation of art, new music, sciences. From the end of the 1950s, the poems (‘written by voice’ of Ladislav Novák arose analogously to visual poetry. These unique magnetic tape records were, in the course of the 1960s, put into the international context of vocal poets — Henri Chopin, Ilse and Pierre Garnier, Bernard Heidsieck, Franz Mon, Gerhard Rühm, and so on. This phonetic poetry became part of the search for a universal language of experimental poetry, yet, at the same time opened a new conception of the relationship between poetry and music.

  14. After four months new privatisation committee in SE

    International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

    Janoska, J.

    2003-01-01

In spite of a delay the Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic wants to meet the schedule set by Government. In middle of September 2002 six prospect submitted their tender offers for entering Slovenske elektrarne (SE), a.s, Bratislava. Representative of privatisation advisor of SE, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Peter Mitka told TREND that he was in contact with the investors but they were waiting for a signal from official authorities about the current state of the tender. And they have been waiting for four months. Only last week a new privatisation commission started dealing with the offers. In spite of these facts Minister of Economy, Robert Nemcsics does not consider the process slow and said that the Ministry would use all its efforts to adhere to the original privatisation schedule prepared by the former government. He further added that everything would depend on the offers submitted. Investors are not interest in SE as a whole but only in its parts. Several members of the committee do not agree with the privatisation and restructuring principles set by the government including a split of SE to conventional and nuclear parts. One of the opponents is the former manager of SE Tibor Mikus (HZDS) - representative of the Parliament or Vladimir Mojs representative of Slovak Energeticists Unions. This put a brake on the tender and changes in the management of SE as well. Privatisation Agency FNM still has not decided upon calling a Extraordinary General Meeting of SE that would elect new bodies. Spokeswoman of FNM, Tatjana Lesajova claims that the Fund is still missing a legal analysis that would review the possibility of changing SE's Articles of Association so that the Board of Directors could be assigned based on a tender (proposal of the Ministry). Members of SE Privatisation Committee: Eva Simkova - Secretary of State, Ministry of Economy SR; Laszlo Pomothy - Secretary of State, Ministry of Economy SR; Henrich Herceg - Advisor to the Minister of Economy SR

  16. Check Mate! The CERN vs Fermilab Chess Competition

    CERN Multimedia

    2001-01-01

7,000 kilometers and a 7 hour time difference had no impact upon the enthusiasm that pervaded the chess competition between CERN and Fermilab. In spite of the computer era, one game was played over a real wooden board.  Tomas Davidek and Irwin Gaines took advantage of Irwin's momentary presence at CERN. Several chess servers span the world and they are used by all sorts of people from many walks of life. However in mid-November on freechess.org there was a sudden influx of physicists as CERN and Fermilab faced off in their first online chess match. While technically a competition, the aim of the match was above all a 'friendly' contest between the two sister labs.  Usually, in serious chess competitions, each team plays in its strongest available constellation at the moment of the match.  But both CERN and Fermilab did quite the opposite and made getting all interested players involved the top priority. 'This was all put together for the purpose of having good fun' said Tibor Sim...

Partially melted zone (PMZ) cracking susceptibility in AA6061 alloy was studied. Role of prior thermal history, gas tungsten arc welding techniques such as continuous current (CC) and pulsed current (PC) and use of different fillers (AA4043 and AA5356) were studied. Role of different grain refiners such as scandium, zirconium and Tibor in the above fillers was studied. Varestraint test was used to study the PMZ cracking susceptibility. Metallurgical analysis was done to corroborate the results. PMZ cracking was severe in T6 temper than in T4 irrespective of filler material. PMZ cracking susceptibility was more with AA5356 than in AA4043. It was less with pulsed current GTAW. PMZ cracking susceptibility was reduced with addition of grain refiners. Out of all, lowest PMZ cracking susceptibility was observed with 0.5%Sc addition to fusion zone through AA4043 filler and PC technique. The concentrations of magnesium and silicon were reduced at the PMZ grain boundaries with grain refiner additions to fusion zone through AA5356 or AA4043

We present a new spectroscopic potential energy surface (PES) for ^{14}NH_3, produced by refining a high accuracy ab initio PES to experimental energy levels taken predominantly from MARVEL. The PES reproduces 1722 matched J=0-8 experimental energies with a root-mean-square error of 0.035 cm-1 under 6000 cm^{-1} and 0.059 under 7200 cm^{-1}. In conjunction with a new DMS calculated using multi reference configuration interaction (MRCI) and H=aug-cc-pVQZ, N=aug-cc-pWCVQZ basis sets, an infrared (IR) line list has been computed which is suitable for use up to 2000 K. The line list is used to assign experimental lines in the 7500 - 10,500 cm^{-1} region and previously unassigned lines in HITRAN in the 6000-7000 cm^{-1} region. Oleg L. Polyansky, Roman I. A heat wave is a prolonged period of extremely high temperatures for a particular region. However, there exist no universal definitions for a heat wave as it is relative to a specific area and to a certain time of year. In fact, average temperatures in one region may be considered heat wave conditions in another. For instance, an average day in the Mediterranean would be regarded as heat wave conditions in Northern Europe. We have known that World Meteorological Organization definition of a heatwave which is "when the daily maximum temperature of more than five consecutive days exceeds the average maximum temperature by 5 °C, the normal period being 1961-1990". This rule has been accepted in contribution Heat waves and warm periods in Slovakia (Oliver Bochníček - Pavol Fa\\vsko - Ladislav Markovič) published (presented) in EGU 2016. To move on we have tried another criterion for heat waves evaluation (according to warm spell duration index, WSDI) and period since 1901 (1951) to 2016. Important for many sectors (hydrology, agriculture, transportation and tourism) is, that heat waves have been expected during the whole year and period, that is why it can have various impacts. Heat waves occurrence gave us interesting results especially after the 1990.

Full Text Available We focused on tomatoes for industrial processing due to its economical importance for its lycopene content. The objective of our research is to find the variation of lycopene content in tomato fruits depending upon the length of after harvest storage and thermic treatment, which is inevitable when being industrialy processed. From the point of view of nutritional qualities the most relevant contentual substance of tomatos are carotenoids, included lycopene. At average for tree following experimental years we learnt significant differences regarding the content of lycopene and the length of storage of tomato fruits. Immediately after the harvest and proccesing tomato fruits contained, at average for tree years, 103.24 mg of lycopene. After 14 days the content of lycopene declined to 46.76 mg . kg−1 of fresh mass. After 30 days the average value dropped to 29.26 mg . kg−1. This fact comfirms that boiling respectively thermic treatment increases the content of lycopene in tomato fruits, particulary in our experiment to the value 83.33 mg . kg−1. At varieties Ladislav, Peto 86, Prémium, Salus the content of lycopene has even risen in comparison with its content up to 48 hours after the harvest. Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L. belongs to the most signifficant vegetable varieties either for its exploitation in processing industry as well as for its nutritional value with extraordinary beneficial effect for human organism.Although the content of lycopene is genetically stable attribute, its content in our experiment ranged from 45.39 mg . kg−1 (Prémium variety to 77.98 mg . kg−1 (Zámčan variety, which are significant differences.

A standardized 6 × 12 × 24-mm bone defect was created below the articular surface of the medial tibia condyles on both hind legs of 18 adult sheep. The defect on the right side was filled with Nanobone®, while the defect on the contralateral side was left empty. The tibial heads of six sheep were analyzed after 6, 12, and 26 weeks each. The histological and radiological analysis of the defect on the control side did not reveal any bone formation after the total of 26 weeks. In contrast, the microcomputed tomography analysis of the defect filled with Nanobone® showed a 55%, 72%, and 74% volume fraction of structures with bone density after 6, 12, and 26 weeks, respectively. Quantitative histomorphological analysis after 6, and 12 weeks revealed an osteoneogenesis of 22%, and 36%, respectively. Hematoxylin and eosin sections demonstrated multinucleated giant cells on the surface of the biomaterial and resorption lacunae, indicating osteoclastic resorptive activity. Nanobone® appears to be a highly potent bone substitute material with osteoconductive properties in a loaded large animal defect model, supporting the potential use of Nanobone® also in

One revitalization may not be enough. Especially if a company has been thoroughly neglected for a long time. There are situations when the replacement of management, redundancies and cost cutting has to be repeated or the company will never reach a sound condition with growing revenues and a reasonable profit. In recent years the new owner of one of the biggest traditional Slovak wood processing companies - Smrecina, Banska Bystrica - also had to go through this process. When five years ago investors, Juraj Kamaras and Ladislav Krajnak, from eastern Slovakia took over the company, it was on the brink of bankruptcy. The former owners of Smrecina did not have the money for the modernisation of its overly extensive production base and their debts with wood suppliers started to increase. The new owners soon realised that they could not keep everything and decided to only continue production with the best potential. They only retained about a third or the 500 strong workforce, closed down the outdated sawmill and stopped the production of wooden packaging. They only modernised and developed the production of insulation fibreboards. Today, this has proved to be a good decision. The financially and technologically undemanding sawing of wood is done by many companies but the number of wooden fibreboard insulation producers can be counted on the fingers of two hands. The market is not saturated yet and the popularity of wood in the building industry is growing. Last year the new owners of Smrecina finally moved into profit regarding the sale of insulation. The production started to be profitable after last summer after the owners again replaced the management. The new management again reviewed the human and other potential of the company. Management and employees were released and new cheaper suppliers were found. Today the factory employs 160 people and revenues are at about the same level as five years ago - 500 mil. Sk (16.53 mil. EUR). (author)

However, a temporary increase in VIM-4-producing, clonally unrelated Enterobacteriaceae strains was described earlier in a Kuwaiti hospital. We investigated the genetic support of blaVIM-4 in six Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, one Escherichia coli, and one Enterobacter cloacae strain and compared it to that of VIM-4-producing isolates from other countries of the region. Five K. pneumoniae strains and the E. coli strain from Kuwait carried an ~165 kb IncA/C-type plasmid indistinguishable by restriction fragment length polymorphism. The complete sequence of one of them (pKKp4-VIM was established. pKKp4-VIM exhibited extensive similarities to episomes pKP-Gr642 carrying blaVIM-19 encountered in Greece and to the partially sequenced pCC416 harboring blaVIM-4 detected in Italy. In other countries of the region, the only similar plasmid was the one detected in the isolate from the UAE. In all Kuwaiti strains, irrespective of the species and their VIM plasmids, the blaVIM-4 gene was located within the same integron structure (In416, different from those of other countries of the region. Our data show that the spread of this IncA/C plasmid and particularly that of the In416 integron caused a considerable, albeit temporary, increase in the rate of mostly clonally unrelated VIM-producing Enterobacteriaceae strains of multiple species

  13. Making and exploiting fullerenes, graphene, and carbon nanotubes

    International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

    Marcaccio, Massimo; Paolucci, Francesco

    2014-01-01

This volume contains nine chapters which are presenting critical reviews of the present and future trends in modern chemistry research. The chapter ''Solubilization of Fullerenes, Carbon Nanotubes and Graphene'' by Alain Penicaud describes the various ingenious approaches to solve the solubility issue and describes in particular how graphite, and modern nanocarbons, can be made soluble by reductive dissolution. A large part of the present volume concerns the merging of nanocarbons with nanotechnology and their impact on technical development in many areas. Fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, nanodiamond and graphene find, for instance, various applications in the development of solar cells, including dye sensitized solar cells. The chapter ''Incorporation of Balls, Tubes and Bowls in Nanotechnology'' by James Mack describes the recent development of the area of fullerene fragments, and corannulene in particular, and their direct applications to organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology, while, in the chapter ''Exploiting Nanocarbons in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells'' by Ladislav Kavan, the exploitation of nanocarbons in the development of novel dye sensitized solar cells with improved efficiency, durability and costs is thoroughly reviewed. The functionalization of CNSs has the invaluable advantage of combining their unique properties with those of other classes of materials. Supramolecular chemistry represents an elegant alternative approach for the construction of functional systems by means of noncovalent bonding interactions. Večje strokovne pozornosti so bile deležne predvsem orgle in orglarji. Kadar

presentation related to their work. Chilworth Technology and Infolytica both took advantage of this opportunity. David Firth from Chilworth Technology delivered some case studies related to process safety and Chris Emson from Infolytica compared the different types of modelling software used in industry and academia. For two days of the conference, an exhibition was held for delegates to meet and discuss their work with interested companies. Sessions on Modelling and Simulation and on Measurement and Instrumentation were included. Recent successful IOP meetings on Electrospinning and Electrospray prove that this is an important topic, and were the subject of a session in the conference, including an invited talk by Dr Horst von Recum on Electrospun materials for affinity based drug delivery. The conference finished with a session on Environmental and Space Applications. The Southampton Yacht Club provided a fitting venue for the conference dinner on the Wednesday evening. Meal times, and conference dinners in particular, are always a great opportunity to meet with other workers in related fields, and there were many conversations started in question and answer sessions that continued over a plate of food. Within the conference dinner, prizes were awarded for the best student work. Ladislav Konopka's talk in the modelling and simulation session discussed how different particle sizes can be shown to transfer charge in a modelled system. Matthias Perez's poster presented early work on the use of a small-scale wind turbine to generate wind power. The discussions both within the lecture theatre and the ongoing discussions that occur over coffee and tea in between sessions are often a place where new ideas are shared. In fact, the presentation submitted by Dr Atsushi Ohsawa, Charge neutralisation from the side surface of an insulating plate, acknowledged an inspiration from a question raised at a previous Electrostatics conference in Budapest in 2013. In these proceedings the
