Full Text Available Exceptional achievements, expert masteries, masterful performances and creative products can be attained only after a number of years of guided and well-devised practice or goal-oriented practicing. We are dealing with a long-term, systematic and carefully guided training which gradually, step by step, leads towards developing expertise and producing supreme achievements and performances in different areas of human activities. This paper explores the role of goal-oriented practice in the development of expert thinking in science, its characteristics and levels of development. Expert thinking in science is defined as the competence developed through learning and practicing of a certain scientific discipline within systematic education and training as an integral part of artificial development. The goal-oriented practice takes place in phases. Its important feature is a gradual and carefully guided progress and enhancement of abilities that is achieved through meaningful tasks and relevant activities suited to age and the level of expertise in a particular domain, along with constant improvement of activities based on feedback provided by mentors. On the path of development of expertise and expert thinking in science, as one of the forms of manifesting giftedness, an individual needs to be ready to invest efforts, set aside the time and be dedicated to work, as well as to have the possibilities and opportunities to pursue scientific research. Full Text Available In this paper, we explore high school students’ intrapersonal experiences regarding their leisure activities, and whether it is justified, on the basis of their perception, to make a distinction between active and passive leisure. The data were collected by 24-hour time diary method (description of experiences regarding the stated activities and the thematic content analysis method was applied. The comments embedded in students’ descriptions (unit of analysis were classified into four categories: aims/importance of activities, mental effort, motivational value and experience of engagement. The sample of 922 high school students was structured by the region, age (I-IV grade and type of school (grammar and vocational schools. As expected, extracurricular activities and hobbies are significantly more often described as mentally demanding and important for the development of competencies and identity, compared to passive leisure activities - watching entertainment shows and movies, reading for pleasure, listening to music and playing computer games. For these latter activities, there are significantly more positive comments on their motivational value. There is no significant difference regarding the experience of engagement, partly because of the unexpectedly large number of positive comments on watching entertainment shows and movies. The implications of these findings are discussed from the perspective of positive youth development.

Full Text Available Since motivation for choosing the teaching profession figures as one of the most important determinants of the successfulness of teachers and even their students, this paper is aimed at investigating the factors of choosing teaching as a career. For that purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the students of “teacher training” faculties, novices and subject teachers with more than five years of work experience (N=76. Thematic analysis was used to identify nine categories of motivational factors: Working with young people (the desire to have a dynamic and creative job in the surroundings of young people, Influence on students (the motivation to exert influence on students’ socio-emotional development, values and education, Dealing with the subject (the motivation for dealing with the science that the person studied, Class teacher/Teacher/Parents as a role model (the motivation stemming from the influence of significant others, Lecturing (the desire to “transfer knowledge”, Lifelong learning (the desire for permanent learning in different fields, Working hours and holidays (the motivation due to working hours and holidays, Fit with the abilities (the desire to realise the “naturally given” abilities and Reputation (the desire to be appreciated in the society. In keeping with the results of other studies, it has been found that altruistic motivation for the choice of teaching as a career is dominant, while extrinsic motivation is least present. The findings are interpreted in the light of the current models of motivation for choosing teaching as a career and the characteristics of teachers’ education and status in Serbia. 12. Music education and mental health of music students

Full Text Available The existing findings point to peculiarities of personality traits of the musically gifted. These traits can be viewed as the result of acquisition and modelling of certain forms of behaviour, reactions and feelings in accordance with the conditions and demands of the educational and professional context. The aim of this paper is to explore whether the students of the Faculty of Music (FOM are different from the students of other faculties in the prominence of anxiety and depressive symptoms and early maladaptive schemas. Anxiety symptoms were measured by the Spielberger’s Test Anxiety Inventory - Trait (STAI-T, depressive symptoms by Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI, while the presence of early maladaptive schemas was determined by the score on the shorter form of Young’s questionnaire that measures the presence of 15 schemas. The sample included 176 students, 48,9% of whom came from the FOM, and 51,1% from other Belgrade faculties. Descriptive analysis and multivariate analysis of variance indicate that both the anxiety (F(1,176=6,40; p<0,01 and depressive symptoms (F(1,176=10,15; p<0,01, as well as early maladaptive schemas (F(15,158=3,02; p<0,001 are more prominent in FOM students. Statistically significant differences are found for ten schemas, and using a Bonferroni adjusted alpha level of 0,003 a significant difference is found for four schemas: social isolation, dependence, entitlement and insufficient self-control. It can be concluded that music students are different from the students of other faculties in that they have more prominent anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as more prominent maladaptive schemas. The obtained differences, i.e. higher vulnerability in musicians, are discussed in the context of the teaching process and the professional demands imposed upon them.
