He was treated with one cycle of high-dose dexamethasone. After three cycles of bortezomib, the patient exhibited slow elevations in the free light-chain levels and developed a significant new increase of serum M protein. Bone marrow cytogenetic analysis revealed a complex karyotype characteristic of malignant plasma cells. To better understand the molecular pathogenesis of this patient, we sequenced for mutations in the entire coding regions of 409 cancer-related genes using a semiconductor-based sequencing platform. Sequencing analysis revealed eight nonsynonymous somatic mutations in addition to several copy number variants, including CCND1 and RB1. These alterations may play roles in the pathobiology of this disease. This targeted next-generation sequencing can allow for the prediction of drug resistance and facilitate improvements in the treatment of MM patients. 12. Japanese culture as a paradigm in the formation of minimalism in architecture

Full Text Available Minimalism is now accepted as the definition of culture by way of reasoning, that is, as an aesthetic approach to navigating through the different fields, such as art, architecture, music, fashion design and critical discussions. It is a contemporary need for simplicity, order and purity of the individual come from history, examples of which is essential for the growing emergency needs, and which may be a way to throw a new light. In Japanese culture, architecture has the longest history. The ideal of simplicity in the Japanese architectural tradition is specific - from the Ise shrine or the heroic simplicity of architecture and rituals, as well as aesthetic ideals through the ceremony of tea and Katsura Palace Rikju to this great names on the international architectural scene: Tadao Ando, or SANAA. Japanese concept of a zen, who was in the minimum way of life always offered a sense of liberation, a chance to be in touch with the essence of being, influenced by traditional Japanese architecture in a way that not only left an indelible mark in the past, but present a new way today, not only in Japan but also abroad. Minimalism in architecture is a contemporary sensitivity that living beyond all religions, rejects superior materialism and takes the search for spirituality as a new principle of progress.

The tenth meeting of the TAUP Workshop Series, TAUP 2007, was organized by the Research Center for Neutrino Science, Tohoku University. In TAUP 2007 all the various aspects of Astroparticle Physics have been covered, from Cosmology and Dark Constituents, to Gravitational Waves, to Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics, to High Energy Astrophysics, to Cosmic Rays and Gamma-Rays Astronomy. New and important scientific results were presented and debated in the plenary review talks and in a very large number of contributions in topical parallel sessions. As editors of these proceedings, we hope that this volume, which contains most of the talks and contributions presented at TAUP 2007, will provide a detailed state-of-the-art account of the various facets of Astroparticle Physics. We thank all the invited speakers, conveners, and contributors who made this possible. Full coverage of the transparencies presented at the conference can be found on the website http://www.awa.tohoku.ac.jp/taup2007. The TAUP 2007 Organizing Committee thanks IUPAP/PaNAGIC, Sendai Tourism and Convention Bureau, COE program: Exploring New Science by Bridging Particle-Matter Hierarchy, SEIKO EG&G, and REPIC corporation for sponsoring the Conference, and Sendai Civic Auditorium, where the meeting was held, for their hospitality. We wish to thank Alessandro Bottino, Junpei Shirai, Fumihiko Suekane, David Sinclair, Takaaki Kajita, Takeo Moroi, Masaki Mori, Masahiro Kawasaki, Yoshihito Gando, Sei Yoshida, Kyoko Tamae, Sanshiro Enomoto, Alexandre Kozlov, Yasuhiro Kishimoto, Itaru Shimizu, Kengo Nakamura, Haruo Ikeda, and Kyo Nakajima for their invaluable contribution in the scientific shaping of the conference and in the preparation of the present volume. The Organizing Committee is grateful to the members of the International Advisory Committee and of the TAUP Steering Committee for assistance and advice on the scientific program. Very special thanks are due to Ms Rika Bizen, Mr Fujio Miura, Ms Akemi

  15. Minimalism in architecture: Materials as an instrument of perception

    2013-01-01

Full Text Available Materials, as an instrument for author's report of his ideas and puts them into the space and time, is a recurring theme of architecture, from the time of Vitruvius triad (firmitas. In minimalism, materials shape space and express its essence, which is the irreducible minimum. The approach in this paper is methodologically defined by architecture domain that is art within it, therefore what the visual means are materials, with the aspiration to discover meaning in what we see. The principles of visual perception are primarily active in the field of law perceptions reached by the psychology of perception, specifically the theory called Gestalt. As the material contained in the tangible components, and sentient, such a relationship is required for duality of materialization, which is achieved by the use of their material expression of immateriality. This expression gives the truth of immateriality (natural materials, tactile value (structure and texture and the 'movement' of the material (the ability to transform. Author's access to the material as an instrument of expression immaterial, provided the concept of minimalist architecture at a higher artistic level (Peter Cumtor and causing severe emotional reaction when meeting also created architectural works (Tadao Ando. Transformations of materials are achieved through the exploration of new treatments and techniques (Kengo Kuma, and the development of technology to unimaginable limits changes the way of understanding reality (Herzog & de Meron. Researching of materials, in the way of its application, can be achieved understanding of minimalism in the architecture as an idea.

  16. Training in peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM for esophageal achalasia

Full Text Available Nicholas Eleftheriadis, Haruhiro Inoue, Haruo Ikeda, Manabu Onimaru, Akira Yoshida, Toshihisa Hosoya, Roberta Maselli, Shin-ei KudoDigestive Disease Center, Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital, Yokohama, JapanAbstract: Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM has been developed in the context of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES as a minimally invasive endoscopic treatment for symptomatic esophageal achalasia, which is a chronic progressive benign disease with severe morbidity and difficult management. Since September 2008, POEM has been successfully performed in more than 200 consecutive patients with symptomatic achalasia at the Digestive Disease Center of Showa University, Northern Yokohama Hospital, Yokohama, Japan, with excellent short- and long-term results and absence of serious complications. International experience of POEM within clinical studies is also promising. According to these results, POEM is considered as a safe procedure that can be applied to all achalasia patients. However, the low incidence of achalasia (0.3%–1% per 100,000 population, in combination with the potential serious complications related to the technically demanding POEM procedure, has made training difficult. There is therefore an urgent need for an animal model for training to decrease the learning curve. Further, there are other ethical and training issues to address. The pig is the most appropriate animal model for training in POEM due to its anatomy being similar to that of humans. The porcine esophagus has the advantage of easy mobilization due to absence of tight junctions to surrounding organs. A non-survival porcine model would be a simple, inexpensive, and reproducible animal model for training in POEM, without the need for concern about complications. A possible training process might first involve observation of POEM performed by specialists, then training on non-survival and survival porcine models, followed by training in

. Discussion constructed based on review of philosophy, science, engineering and art. To read and identify the characteristics of precedent were done by comparing directly the facade, shape, geometry pattern, scale, vertical and horizontal plane that affect the pattern of design. From the result: for some commercial buildings in the Makassar city were strongly influenced by the architectural precedent from the outside, the style of its localities was disappearing. For the government buildings, although is slightly influenced  by the architectural precedents from the outside, but its still keeping the local architectural style and culture of the local area as a regional identity.
