The way a small company the size of Niko Resources Ltd. was able to enter the Indian oil patch was described. India was chosen because it presented many indicators of success, including an overall economic growth of 5.3 % in 1994, foreign currency reserves standing at over US $20 billion, exports increase of 20 %, and the introduction of a dramatic program of economic, industrial and trade liberalization. According to most estimates, India's energy demand is likely to increase significantly, and the energy sector will need over US $18 billion worth of expansion by the year 2000. Niko was the first Canadian company to enter the oil and gas exploration and development sector in India, but the competition is becoming fierce. There are two rounds of bidding for exploration each year, and foreign companies are welcome to participate in the existing joint ventures

Full Text Available Different terms are used in old Persian manuscripts, such as Ta’id Besârat, to define and refer to crucible or watered steel and different types of swords. However, there are few manuscripts that describe the way crucible steel cakes and blades were made such as the manuscript Gŏharnâme. The present article deals with the making of crucible steel as described in Persian manuscripts and also with a new reproduction process of making crucible steel as conducted by the Finnish smith Niko Hynninen.Los antiguos manuscritos persas, tales como Ta’id Besârat, emplean diversos términos para definir y referirse al acero de crisol o acero de Damasco y a diversos tipos de espada. Sin embargo, existen pocos manuscritos que describan el modo en que se elaboraban los lingotes y hojas de acero de crisol, entre ellos el manuscrito Gŏharnâme. El presente artículo describe el proceso de elaboración del acero de crisol tal y como lo refieren los manuscritos persas, así como una moderna reproducción del mismo realizada por el forjador finlandés Niko Hynninen.

Full Text Available Abstract Background Urease is a virulence factor that plays a role in the resistance of Brucella to low pH conditions, both in vivo and in vitro. Brucella contains two separate urease gene clusters, ure1 and ure2. Although only ure1 codes for an active urease, ure2 is also transcribed, but its contribution to Brucella biology is unknown. Results Re-examination of the ure2 locus showed that the operon includes five genes downstream of ureABCEFGDT that are orthologs to a nikKMLQO cluster encoding an ECF-type transport system for nickel. ureT and nikO mutants were constructed and analyzed for urease activity and acid resistance. A non-polar ureT mutant was unaffected in urease activity at neutral pH but showed a significantly decreased activity at acidic pH. It also showed a decreased survival rate to pH 2 at low concentration of urea when compared to the wild type. The nikO mutant had decreased urease activity and acid resistance at all urea concentrations tested, and this phenotype could be reverted by the addition of nickel to the growth medium. Conclusions Based on these results, we concluded that the operon ure2 codes for an acid-activated urea transporter and a nickel transporter necessary for the maximal activity of the urease whose structural subunits are encoded exclusively by the genes in the ure1 operon.

Especial importancia requiere el papel desempeñado por el escritor griego Nikos Kazantzakis como enviado especial del general Pángalos para analizar la situación político-económica y artística de España, teniendo como telón de fondo las circunstancias políticas que tanto en Grecia como en España se están viviendo en esos momentos, e impulsar las relaciones entre ambas naciones, deterioradas después de la Primera Guerra Mundial. ABSTRACT This paper is an approach to the study of the Hispano-Hellenic relationships during the military dictatorships of the Primo de Rivera in Spain and Pángalos in Greece, through the Greek press, the first one, and the diplomatic Spanish correspondence, the second one. Special importance requires the role carried out by the Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis as a special correspondent of general Pángalos to analyze the politico-economic and artistic situation of Spain, having as backdrop the political circumstances of both Greece and Spain in that moment, as well as to impel the relationships between both nations, deteriorated after the First World War. Full Text Available The first part of this paper presents the ideas of Niko Paech and Christian Felber, two popular exponents of alternative economic models in Germany and Austria. Both authors invoke psychological and behavioral factors, noting that our current economic system is leaving people dependent, unhappy, and dissatisfied, and that this system’s values are contradictory to our constitutional and fundamental values. The book presented in the second part of the paper helps understand this absurdity. It’s Riane Eisler’s The Real Wealth of Nations: Creating a Caring Economics, in which she explains how we can reach an understanding of connections that are still largely invisible, and change the mindsets responsible for replicating harmful behavior and policies reflected in our current economic system.

Full Text Available Cultural artefacts (musical instruments and music in the Bible: On the question of the music of poetry, hymnography and the lyric poetry of Nikolay Liliev The present paper is dedicated to the symbols of musical culture in semiotic and cultural discourse, as reflected by the category “cultural artefacts” (musical instruments in the Bible. At the same time, it is as an attempt to demonstrate the literary critical and musicological potential of the problem. The category “musical instruments” in biblical texts has been discussed in a historical perspective. Another issue analysed in the paper are the rhythmic and metric structures of Byzantine and Bulgarian hymnography. Both these questions are viewed from the perspective of musical and poetical homology in Bulgarian symbolist poetry, specifically in the lyric poetry of Nikolay Liliev, and of the connections of Orthodox hymnography with broadly understood musicality of poetry.   Artefakty (instrumenty muzyczne i muzyka w Biblii. O muzyczności tekstu literackiego, hymnografii i liryki Nikołaja Liliewa Artykuł poświęcony jest roli symboli kultury muzycznej w dyskursie semiotycznym i kulturowym na podstawie kategorii artefaktów kulturowych (instrumentów muzycznych w Biblii oraz stanowi próbę ukazania literacko-krytycznego i muzykologicznego potencjału zagadnienia. Kategoria „instrumenty muzyczne” w tekstach biblijnych została omówiona w perspektywie historycznej. Tekst analizuje również problematykę struktur rytmicznych i metrycznych hymnografii bizantyjskiej i bułgarskiej. W drugiej części artykułu oba zagad­nienia rozpatrywane są w aspekcie muzycznej i poetyckiej homologii poezji symbolistów bułgarskich, na podstawie liryki Nikołaja Lilijewa. Inną kwestię podejmowaną w wyżej wymienionym kontekście są niektóre związki i relacje pomiędzy hymnografią prawosławną a szeroko rozumianą muzycznością poezji.

Lectures, training and practical work in the workshop were performed in the company and school's workshops and laboratories. In the additional chapter the authors draw attention to the problems of payment for the teachers of technical s ubjects, who enter the education process with great working experience from companies but start here as beginners since the school regulations do not define such cases.

Full Text Available Josip Kozarac (1858–1906 is considered to be one of the most important Slavonian and Croatian writers of Realism. However, the beginnings of his literary work written for children are seldom mentioned and even less frequently studied. Indeed, a few remarks about that part of Kozarac’s literary work disagree on which stories belong to The Tales of Grandfather Niko (Priče djeda Nike. Such an attitude towards what constitutes the corpus of Kozarac’s work under this title is closely linked to the issue of the affiliation of these stories to children’s literature. This study attempts to provide answers to two intertwined questions: first, do Priče djeda Nike (The Tales of Grandfather Niko belong to children’s literature and second, what is the exact scope of the work known as Priče djeda Nike? Having established that Priče djeda Nike undoubtedly belong to children’s literature, we will try to find their place in the history of Croatian children’s literature. We will argue that this work represents a transitory form of narration between, on the one hand, moralistic stories (which we find in the very popular translations of the stories by German authors Christoph Schmid and Franz Hoffmann and their Croatian epigones and, on the other, entrepreneurship narratives by Davorin Trstenjak, U radu je spas (Labor Will Save Us from 1885 and Dragoslav Heiligstein, Zlatne ruke (Golden Hands from 1930, which paved the way for socially engaged realistic novels, such as Mato Lovrak’s Vlak u snijegu (A Train in the Snow published in 1933 and Družba Pere Kvržice (Pero Kvržica’s Gang published in 1933, and Josip Pavičić’s Poletarci, published in 1937. The study will show that the number of stories published in the first monographic edition of Priče djeda Nike is different from the number of stories published in Pučke novine. The study also analyzes which stories Kozarac himself considered as those belonging to Priče djeda Nike.

During synthesis, the size and shape of the dendrimer can be customized and controlled, so the finished macromolecule will have a specific “architecture” and terminal groups. These characteristics will determine its suitability for drug delivery, diagnostic imaging, and as a genetic material carrier. This review will focus initially on the unique properties of dendrimers and their use in biomedical applications, as antibacterial, antitumor, and diagnostic agents. This report aims to present a study of the change of system installation and configuration of Linux servers with the distribution of Scientific Linux CERN (SLC) within the LHCb experiment at CERN. These servers are primarily used to sort the output data of various sensors detectors proton collisions. It was planned to explore a solution based software Cobbler / Puppet to replace the existing software, Quattor, to help install and configure automatically. First, these tests should be done on virtual machines and then putting these tools in real conditions with machines without hard disk, such as those in production. Currently, the use of software to allow configuration automates Puppet works and meets the expectations of the project manager, Niko Neufeld. Cobbler on, after various tests, it fails to meet our expectations fully. Therefore a thorough study should be continued or finding another software or by adapting Cobbler. This research and results will have impact on Physics results published by the ATLAS collaboration while contribute to a reduction of systematic uncertainties. The ATLAS simulation is implemented for a deep and wide range investigation of physics processes from the event generator in a format that is identical to the output of the ATLAS detector data acquisition system. Both the simulated data and detector outputs are running through the same trigger and reconstruction packages. However data analyses shows discrepancies of simulated and real data for some regions of the detector. Fifty years ago, Niko Tinbergen defined the scope of behavioural biology with his four problems: causation, ontogeny, survival value and evolution. About 20 years ago, there was another highly significant development in behavioural biology—the discovery of mirror neurons (MNs). Here, I use Tinbergen's original four problems (rather than the list that appears in textbooks) to highlight the differences between two prominent accounts of MNs, the genetic and associative accounts; to suggest that the latter provides the defeasible ‘best explanation’ for current data on the causation and ontogeny of MNs; and to argue that functional analysis, of the kind that Tinbergen identified somewhat misleadingly with studies of ‘survival value’, should be a high priority for future research. In this kind of functional analysis, system-level theories would assign MNs a small, but potentially important, role in the achievement of action understanding—or another social cognitive function—by a production line of interacting component processes. These theories would be tested by experimental intervention in human and non-human animal samples with carefully documented and controlled developmental histories. PMID:24778376

The Importance of Visual Reading for the Interpretation of a Literary Text

Full Text Available In this paper, the two authors showcase the results of a research survey on the role of illustrations in the interpretation of literary texts. The survey sample included students of primary education and preschool education, who were given the poem Učenjak (Scholar by Niko Grafenauer and asked to answer questions regarding the character’s personality and appearance, the literary space, and other factors. The first group of interviewees was given the poem illustrated by Lidija Osterc and the other the same poem illustrated by Marjan Manček. The results showed that the illustration had a significant impact on the message conveyed by the poem, particularly when the illustrator added the context by representing the character’s environment (which was not explicitly given in the text. Furthermore, the results showed the need for the comprehensive reading of an illustrated text, given that it is the interaction between the verbal and the visual that provides vital information necessary for the reader to understand the message of the dedicated literary work.

Full Text Available Nikos Oikonomides The Judicial Privilege of Nea Moni on ChiosEmperor Constantine  IX Monomachos granted (1045 to the monastery of Nea Moni on Chios a judicial privilege: any action against the monastery should be brought to court in front of the imperial tribunal only (JGR I, 629-631.In the present article it is argued that this privilege has nothing to do with the western immunitas, because the privilege does not give the monastery any right to judge other people. The privilege is compared to the similar ones granted to the monasteries of Lavra (963-964 and Iviron (1079. And it is interpreted as an effort to protect the founders of Nea Moni, who were seemingly spiritual mysticists, from the monastic establishment of Constantinople, especially the cenobitic Stoudiou movement.In fact, as we learn from Psellos, the founders of Nea Moni were eventually accused and condemned of heresy by the imperial tribunal under empress Theodora (1055-56, but were later re-instated thanks to the support of Patriarch Michael Keroularios.

Full Text Available Apart from their role in reproduction androgens also respond to social challenges and this response has been seen as a way to regulate the expression of behaviour according to the perceived social environment (Challenge hypothesis, Wingfield et al. 1990. This hypothesis implies that social decision-making mechanisms localized in the central nervous system (CNS are open to the influence of peripheral hormones that ultimately are under the control of the CNS through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Therefore, two puzzling questions emerge at two different levels of biological analysis: (1 Why does the brain, which perceives the social environment and regulates androgen production in the gonad, need feedback information from the gonad to adjust its social decision-making processes? (2 How does the brain regulate gonadal androgen responses to social challenges and how do these feedback into the brain? In this paper, we will address these two questions using the integrative approach proposed by Niko Tinbergen, who proposed that a full understanding of behaviour requires its analysis at both proximate (physiology, ontogeny and ultimate (ecology, evolution levels.

The most known are mechanical simulators, virtual reality simulators, computer-simulating endoscopy, magnetic endoscopic imaging, and composite and explanted animal organ simulators. Current literature generally indicates that the use of simulators improves performance of endoscopists and enhances safety of patients, especially during the initial phase of training. Moreover, newer endoscopes and imaging techniques such as high-definition colonoscopes, chromocolonoscopy with dyes spraying, and third-eye retroscope have been incorporated in everyday practice, offering better visualization of the colon and detection of polyps. Despite the abundance of these different technological features, training devices are not widely used and no official guideline or specified training algorithm or technique for lower gastrointestinal endoscopy has been evolved. In this review, we present the most important training methods currently available and evaluate these using existing literature. Fundoscopy revealed an arterial macroaneurysm with preretinal and subretinal hemorrhage in the eye. Due to significant macular involvement, the patient received two intravitreal injections of bevacizumab within 2 months.Results: Significant visual and anatomical recovery was observed 2 months later, which was confirmed by fluorescein angiography. At the end of a follow-up period (39 months visual acuity and visual field were at normal levels.Conclusion: Retinal MA is a relatively rare condition. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy appears a safe and effective treatment option for selected symptomatic individuals that may offer faster visual rehabilitation. Herein we report, for the first time, a 39-month follow-up of a retinal MA treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy.Keywords: arterial retinal macroaneurysm, anti-VEGF, bevacizumab, multilevel hemorrhage

Full Text Available All human beings are different. Unique. Something always remains to prove that everyone is irreplaceable. Centuries of books, crossing worlds, have been touching mankind in both clear and unsuspected ways. One thing we can say for sure: writers and readers cannot live apart. Those who traveled in time and lived in unbelievable places, coming right from the writer’s imagination, can easily be part of our lives. It is absolutely true that for a large variety of reasons, many times we feel such a perfect identification with some characters, that their existence becomes «real». Saint-John Perse, Italo Calvino, Roald Dahl, Nikos Kazantzákis and Victor Hugo, among uncountable names, gave us much of what we are today. But what do they search, undercovered, multiplying themselves in characters, some of them living forever in our memory? What do they look for? Is there a reason for their existence? What did Hermann Hesse and Romain Gary, for instance, think about happiness and love? Words, in our particular case written words, have been powerful enough to eliminate every obstacle, possessing our inner selves in ways far from consciousness. The reader becomes «the other». Inside and outside the book there are no differences. Who are we? Amazing, fantastic, terrifying, although nonexistent libraries, from more than a dozen novels, are the main theme of the present reflection. At this stage, palliative therapeutic options including nonspecific cytotoxic drugs, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy can be utilized. In 2016, immunotherapy was approved in Europe for squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Moreover, afatinib was also approved as second-line therapy for squamous cell carcinoma. Case report: This article presents a case of a 76-year-old male with squamous cell carcinoma who received nab-paclitaxel as first-line therapy, and his treatment was switched to the tyrosine kinase inhibitor afatinib (40 mg after disease progression with left lung atelectasis. After receiving afatinib for only 28 days, the atelectasis resolved. No adverse effects were observed from the afatinib therapy. Discussion: In this case, afatinib 40 mg proved to be an effective alternative treatment for an elderly patient. Treatment choice should be based on the performance status of the patient, cost-effectiveness, and drug treatment guidelines. Keywords: lung cancer, EGFR, afatinib

Zorba, Socrates, and the good life

Full Text Available How should one live in order to live well? What are the defining characteristics of the good life? These questions - the perennial concern of classical scholars - have in the last 25 years become the subject of debates in contemporary social and political theory as well. Foucault (1986, Taylor (1989, Kekes (1995, Cottingham (1998 and Nehamas (1998 have all stressed the importance of the “art of living” or “caring for the self” in light of contemporary political and economic developments. This article, as my contribution to the debate, offers the analysis of two models of the “good life”: the one as presented by Plato and embodied in the literary character of Socrates, and the other as presented by Nikos Kazantzakis and embodied in the literary figure of Zorba. In general terms, Socrates advocates the rule of reason and the denigration and submission of the bodily Eros, while Zorba remains suspicious of the mind - “a careful little shopkeeper” - and stresses the significance of bodily experiences as ways of linking oneself with the rest of the universe. Hence in the article I formulate an ethic of sensual Eros by focusing on Zorba’s way of life and contrast it to the Socratic ethics. I conclude that the concern and respect for the body, for the house in which Eros dwells, is the necessary a priori for the living of the good life. This way of life is not one that rejects reason altogether, but what it does reject is the desire of reason to monopolize the individual’s life processes.

Full Text Available The article presents anthropological views of some very influential Orthodox theologians. The author starts his attempt from sketching a direct historical context of a rapid development of anthropology since19th century. He indicates that since the middle of 20th century one cannotice an increasing interest concerning on the understanding of human person, human freedom and human rights in social structures. Then he summarizes main points of the mystical anthropology of Vladimir Lossky. This very influential theologian, who concentrated mostly oncategory of person in apophatic and Trinitarian perspective on the basisof the patristic wisdom, has influenced many contemporary religious thinkers.Grounds of the anthropological reflection of Orthodox theologians were described in the second part of the article. Contemporary theologians have been trying to find answers for such questions as: “Who is a human being?”; “How to understand his or her freedom, rights, morality, life and existence?”; “What does compose the essence of his or her relationswith other human beings in the community of the Church and society”– taking into account the Divine Scripture, the teaching of the Churchand modern philosophical reflections.The third part of the article shows four examples of Greek theologians who significantly have contributed to the contemporary discussion on the mystery of human person. Each of them characterizes of a specific attempt towards looking for anthropological solutions from Christian point of view. The author labeled the main interest of each of them by a specific title: Panayiotis Nellas – a Christocentric exponent of patristic anthropology, Nikos Nissiotis – a courageous searcher of bases of dialogical anthropology, Christos Yannaras – a brilliant architect of relational ontology of person, Metropolitan John Zizioulas – a persistent builder of personalistic ecclesiological anthropology.

The digital technology with the GIS-based digital platform can provide more diverse and interesting information while using an intuitive, graphical user story mapping interface. The article is an attempt of a new outlook first of all upon scientific output of many years' (the years 1878 - 1909) lecturer on Russian State Law in the Imperial University of Warsaw--Aleksandr Lwowicz Błok. Historians of literature, researchers of life and output of the scientist's son, an eminent poet-symbolist Aleksandr A. Błok, to a high degree were able to reconstruct lot of life and vicissitudes of the Warsaw professor. Thanks to the preserved university archival materials it was possible to add many details to Błok's biography, especially concerning his professional problems. They were connected with dramatic events in personal life of the professor. According to relations of the part of his university co-workers and students, the circumstances even brought about the symptoms of the mental illness. Prematurely elderly he was a man deeply miserable, lonely and deprived of understanding by associates. Up till now his scientific output has not been described precisely enough. Not numerous memories of his contemporaries (Szymon Askenazy, Nikołaj Dubrowskij) and even inconspicuous modern researches of the Polish (Janusz Woliński) brought about, in the author's opinion, too simplified and schematic character-sketch of Błok as a Russificator and nationalist, mediocre scholar and much worse lecturer. A scientific output of Błok is, indeed, inostensible--he published 2 books only--Master's thesis entitled: Władza państwowa w społeczeństwie europejskim. Poglad na polityczna teorie Lorenza Steina i na francuska rzeczywistość polityczna (1880) [State Authority in European Society. international sociological community. Sociology was also progressively introduced as a field of scientific study in Greek universities. However, major contemporary Greek sociologists (among them Dimosthènes Danielidis, Avrotélis Eleftheropoulos and Constantinos Karavidas and more recently Nicos Poulantzas and Nicos Mouzelis worked in prestigious European universities but did not connect to the official Greek academicals institutions. That was probably due to their radical ideas, which opposed the structures of dependence and slow economic growth.Algunos aspectos de la historia de la sociología en Grecia (1900-1980La sociología griega ha estado ligada a las evoluciones sociopolíticas e ideológicas del pasado siglo. Dentro del sistema político, la sociología ha funcionado como un elemento de referencia legitimador, como paradigma y como elemento de modernización. Al mismo tiempo, tanto las corrientes radicales de izquierda como de derecha han considerado la sociología como un instrumento de reforma social. Revistas importantes han defendido ideas radicales justificándolas con teorías sociológicas. Tras la IIa Guerra Mundial, el estado, con el apoyo de la comunidad sociológica occidental, ha organizado la investigación sociológica sobre una base más moderna y sistemática, la sociología acaba formando parte de las enseñanzas impartidas en la universidad. Curiosamente los sociólogos griegos mas importantes (entre los cuales Nikos Pulantzas y Muzelis, precedidos por Danielidis, Avrotelis Eleftherópulos u Karavidas, han desarrollado sus carreras en el extranjero o las han ejercido fuera del ámbito institucional, tanto estatal como universitario, lo cual puede ser explicado por el hecho de que sus ideas implicaban la reorganización total del sistema sociopolítico de un país subordinado geopolítica y económicamente durante todo el siglo XX.

�а счет того, что неконвенциональное оружие может быть использовано террористическими структурами и направлено против отдельных государств. / Hemijski, biološki, radiološki i nuklearni terorizam (CBRN danas je ozbiljan problem, a njegova pretnja i korišćenje predstavlja uvod u novu epohu terorizma - epohu mnogo opasniju od bilo kog prethodnog perioda i terorizma sa kojim niko još ne zna kako da se nosi. Uznemirujuća je činjenica da teroristi mogu da dođu u posed oružja za masovno uništenje, a cilj rada je analiza verovatnoće CBRN terorističkih akcija gde je istaknuta sve veća zabrinutost i sve veći znaci konvergencije između terorizma i nekonvencionalnih CBRN oružja u terorističke svrhe. Terorizam danas uključuje tehnologije dostupne svakome, bilo gde i kada, raspoređene kroz inovativna rešenja, gde je neophodno takođe razumeti kompleksnu interakciju između dinamike ponašanja terorističkih grupa i odluka u vezi sa starim i novim tehnologijama. Perspektivu upotrebe CBRN terorizma potvrdile su mnoge države kao akutni bezbednosni izazov koji iziskuje efikasan i brz odgovor i reakciju. U radu će, takođe, biti rasvetljen odnos između terorističkih grupa i nekonvencionalnih oružja, kao i teškoće u identifikaciji faktora koji mogu izazvati njegovu eskalaciju. Nakon tragedije 11. septembra 2001. godine, ali i nekoliko godina pre, zvaničnici mnogih država istakli su mogućnost da terorističke organizacije vremenom dođu u posed nekonvencionalnih oružja i razviju mogućnosti njihove upotrebe protiv pojedinih država.
