Our purpose was to write a biography of Stanisław Ostrowski that would address in the first place the medical aspect of his professional life, with a comprehensive approach of others fields of his activity. We essentially grounded the paper on primary resources that were papers authored by Ostrowski including his scientific publications, memories, speeches as well as contemporaneous official documents that referred to Ostrowski. Second resources were also used to double check some data from primary resources and to place the biography of Stanisław Ostrowski in a proper background with special care to social, professional and political context. In this study, second resources comprised papers, that were prepared after the death of Stanisław Ostrowski. Stanisław Ostrowski, MD was a meticulous military medical doctor with an academic engagement at the King John Casimir University of Lvov. In addition, he was an excellent organizer, who soon got involved in politics to serve the local community with essential projects in public health particularly anti-tuberculosis campaigns in Lvov district. His quiet and proficient nature made him an ideal statesman with incredible skills to reconcile social, national and political enemies. Ostrowski was elected a member of parliament three times. He also held the position of President of the city of Lvov until World War Two. During the war, he was imprisoned and deported to Siberia, Soviet Union, in years 1939-1941. Subsequently he fought against Nazi Germans in the Polish II Corps. Ostrowski survived the war providing medical service in the various military units. Afterwards, he ran his medical practice in the UK. Stanisław Ostrowski was the only dermatologist who became a state president. He held an office of state president of the Polish Republic on exile in London. His life is not a simple story, but a great lesson that provides clear guidelines how to find a stable ground for lifetime being a medical doctor in the

  3. The memorable service and monastic humility – the history of Stanisław Konarski’s heart

    Ryszard Mączyński

    2016-12-01

Full Text Available The article concentrates on an interesting 130-year-old artefact located in the Krakow church of Piarists – the decoration of the place where Stanisław Konarski’s (1700–1773 heart was buried. Konarski was a monk of the Pious Schools in the 18th century, as well as publisher of a collection of national laws Volumina legum, a bold commentator calling for strengthening royal power and abolishing liberum veto, reformer of the educational system and founder of the renowned, modern Collegium Nobilium. The circumstances of the discovery and relocation of the relic in 1882 from Warsaw to Krakow and the ceremony of its introduction to the monastic Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus on February 13 are also outlined. Three significant research issues are also discussed. The first one is the problem of the authenticity of the artefact, which was discovered more than a hundred years after Konarski’s death in the possession of a Warsaw optician Jakub Pik. It was then that the question started occupying the minds of researchers, including the rector of the Krakow college Adam Słotwiński. The question is made more relevant by the lack of any direct evidence from 1773 about the removal of Stanisław Konarski’s heart from his body after his death. The information gathered so far allow us to assume, with probability bordering on certainty, that it is authentic and the only surviving part of this famous monk’s body. Another question, totally absent from past reflections on the subject, is the reason why the heart was removed. This particular aspect turns our attention at a strikingly popular early-modern Polish tradition – first in royal families, later also among magnates and nobility – of burying hearts separately, usually by entombing them in a church founded by the deceased. It was found that a considerable number of hearts removed from bodies had been inhumed in Piarist churches (Rzeszów, Warsaw or Łowicz. This tradition, however, did

  4. Stanisław Barańczak i awangarda

    2016-12-01

Full Text Available The poetry of Stanisław Barańczak, who himself was against historical avant-garde as a movement that abandoned ethical commitments, has quite a lot in common with avant-garde. Like other New Wave artists, his poetry can be read in the context of the neo-avant-garde and counterculture, e.g. in the context of Guy Debord’s The Society of the Spectacle and Herbert Marcuse’s Onedimensional Man, with the propositions that overlap in many places with those of Baranczak’s “dialectic Romanticism”. When analysing the links of this poetry with the participant art of the 1960s and 1970s, it can be concluded that new-wave commitment has little in common with the typical attempts of the neo-avant-garde at regaining privacy, since the political character of Barańczak’s poetry is based on giving a position of privilege to the martyrdom code of Polish romanticism, which he frames in elitist modernist language.

  6. Analiza psychokrytyczna poezji Stanisława Barańczaka

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Katarzyna Mulet

    2011-01-01

Full Text Available The article is an attempt at a new reading of Stanisław Barańczak’s poetry by using Charles Mauron’s psychocritical method. Four volumes of poems are subjected to analysis, in which the writer’s obsessive metaphors are extracted, allowing the unveiling of his personal myth. It turns out that the romantic hero complex is underlying this myth, that defines the poet’s way of expression of traumatic experiences from his life. Then, the way of recording of such experiences as enslavement by the totalitarian system, alienation in exile, or Parkinson’s disease, is interpreted according to Hanna Segal’s psychoanalytic theory. Barańczak’s writing is gaining then the title of reparation, it becomes a way to recover lost objects from the past by the writer: freedom, stabilization, health, but also the past time, places, events and people.

  7. On Self, essayismus, Charles Lamb and Stanisław Brzozowski

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Roma Sendyka

    2009-01-01

Full Text Available By introducing the theory of the self to modern disputes on identity and subjectivity in the literary text, the article retells contemporary discussions on theory of the self from the Chicago school of symbolic interactionism (G.H. Mead through its development in social psychology (E. Goffman to postmodern compelling ideas of A. Giddens, M. Foucault, J. Glass, K. Gergen, J. Baudrillard and Z. Bauman. This retelling is generated by the question whether the social sciences’ analysis of a subject can be useful in literary studies, traditionally relying on philosophical debates about the identity of a person. The main area of observation becomes modern Polish essay, with the specific example of Stanisław Brzozowski’s last completed essay, the one on Charles Lamb. The text proposes an idea of recursive subjectivity based on the structures of the self – social, interactive, and reflexive.

Full Text Available The library and the cabinet collections of King of Poland Stanisław August Poniatowski reflect the trends of the Enlightement as well as the monarch’s interests. Their acquisition by one of the most important Polish schools, the Volhynian Gymnasium in Kremenets, saved them from dismemberment and gave rise to school collections. The acquisition was possible owing to history (the Partition of Poland, and the emergence of the Vilna Educational District and a unique man – Tadeusz Czacki. The collections at the Volhynian Gymnasium in Kremenets was open to the public on a daily basis. In this way, the Polish King’s Stanisław August wish to have the collection available for masses came true, after his death regrettably. School collections were very valuable. Having originated from the royal collection of the last Polish King, they became a reminiscence of the national potential of a country that disappeared from the map of Europe in 1795. This article is a part of a future book and an attempt of documenting the transition of respective collections from the royal residence in Warsaw to Kremenets. The analysis of Polish, Lithuanian and Ukrainian archives enables to reconstruct the history of the royal collections and to show their quality and didactic utility.

The article of Stanisław Brożek is not a discussion paper but only a collection of numerous remarks, mostly non-professional, on .Polish soil classification. ed. 5, 2011 (SgP5. Since the article of Stanisław Brożek contains a lot of mistakes and inaccuracies arising from misunderstanding merits of a soil classification, as well as SgP5‘s text assessed, therefore in our paper wider merits discussion has not been taken. Correction of the erroneous statements of Author which relate to SgP5 were shown instead. Moreover, this paper is necessary as the Author is not a specialist in the field of soil classification, and his article was published in a pedological scientific journal.

Full Text Available The aim of the article is to present the story of the relationship between Jean-Léon Gérôme and Stanisław Chlebowski. The reconstruction of their friendship is partly based on yet unpublished source materials on the life and work of Chlebowski. The artists met in the early 1860s. Their acquaintance became closer in 1875 when Gérôme stayed in Istanbul at Chlebowski's house. When Chlebowski moved to France, Gérôme introduced him to the French artistic circles, offered him advice and suggested themes for his work. Their relationship was interrupted by Chlebowski's disease and his return to Poland. The last note of this friendship was the short story by Léontine de Nittis, published in 1892.

First issue of Epidemiological Review was published in 1920. First editor in chief was Stanisława Adamowiczowa, PhD (1888-1965), who had worked in National Central Epidemiological Institute since 1919, and later, for period of 45 years, interrupted by breaks resulting from political situation, worked in National Institute of Hygiene. In this jubilee article, we present scientific resume of S. Adamowiczowa which focuses on her achievements in infectious diseases epidemiology, and particularly in analysis and evaluation of current epidemiological data distribution in Poland and worldwide in the period. She was the pioneer in systemic organization of registries of new cases of diseases in the highly populated Polish cities; she initiated use of statistical methods in this field. As editor in chief of Epidemiological Review, she started publishing Epidemiological Chronicle, which is continuously added as a supplement to every second issue, each year. Name of S. Adamowiczowa is associated with Ludwik Rajchman--director of Hygiene Section in League of Nations, with Witold Chodźko PhD--she led courses in National School of Hygiene in Warsaw, with prof. Marcin Kacprzak--as co-author and co-editor of books on hygiene and epidemiology. A brief list of scientific publications of S. Adamowiczowa is also presented.

    2009-01-01

This article describes the relationship between Polish geneticist Stanisław Skowron's views on eugenics during the interwar period, his experiences in Nazi concentration camps during World War II, and his response to Trofim D. Lysenko's ban on genetic research in Soviet-allied states after 1948. Skowron was educated at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and received funding from the Rockefeller Foundation to study in the United States, Italy, Denmark, and Great Britain from 1924 to 1926. His exposure to research being conducted outside of Poland made him an important figure in Polish genetics. During this time Skowron also began to believe that an understanding of biological principles of heredity could play an important role in improving Polish society and became a supporter of eugenics. In 1939 he was arrested along with other faculty members at the Jagiellonian and sent to Sachsenhausen and Dachau. In 1947 he published the first book updating Polish biologists on recent developments in genetics; however, after learning of the outcome of the 1948 session of the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Moscow, Skowron emerged as on of the most vocal advocates for Michurinism. I argue that Skowron's conversion to Lysenkoism was motivated by more than fear or opportunism, and is better understood as the product of his need to rationalize his own support for a theory he could not possibly have believed was correct.

    2011-11-01

Poland was invaded by Nazi Germany on 1 September 1939 and World War II began on 3 September. Polish nurses have their place in this difficult history. In the first months of occupation, nurses focused on caring for wounded soldiers. In order to protect them from prisoner-of-war camps and execution, nurses sought safe havens for the wounded in private homes and transported them there. After their regular jobs, the nurses visited them, changed their dressings and provided them with civilian clothes so that soldiers could eventually escape. This paper describes the work of two of these nurses, Wanda Ossowska and Stanisława Leszczyńska. The first three authors (BD, SH, AJS) were nurses in Poland at that time and they present some of the information in this paper as primary source data.

  14. [Some remarks on the theory of sets by Richard Dedekind and Stanisław Leśniewski].

    Science.gov (United States)

    Obojska, Lidia

    2014-01-01

Mereology, is a part-whole theory, also called the theory of collective sets. It was founded in 1916 by Stanisław Leśniewski and this is an alternative theory versus the classical set theory by Georg Cantor. These two theories are usually teamed up together as Leśniewski himself was referring to the concept of the set by Cantor and Cantor is considered the "main" ideologist of the set theory. However, when analyzing the original texts of various authors, it seems that the very concept of a collective set is closer to the idea of Richard Dedekind rather than that of Georg Cantor. It is known that Cantor borrowed some concepts on the notion of set from Dedekind, whose ideas were also known to Leśniewski, however, there is no study on this topic. This work is therefore an attempt to compare some set-theoretical concepts of both of these authors, i.e. S. Leśiewski and R. Dedekind and the presentation of their convergence.

    2015-07-01

Full Text Available Linguistic Tools in an Extreme Situation. Stanisław Lem’s Fantastic Worlds Built with Words The present issue of "Colloquia Humanistica" contains Professor Ryszard Handke's two last essays, until now unpublished. They belong together and deal with the works of Stanisław Lem, namely with the creation of a sui generis dictionary of this outstanding sci-fi writer. Handke highlights the coming of a new age in the evolution of the genre, already foreshadowed in Lem's early novels. This new sci-fi abandons uncritical beliefs in the power of science leading man to the conquest of cosmos and to a perfection of Earth's civilization. In Handke's analysis, in his first essay discussing "Astronauts" and "Magellan's Nebula," and in the second devoted to "Eden," Lem's evolution starts from a blind faith in the Marxist progress of civilization based on materialistic technocracy and moves towards an increasingly open polemic with this point of view, clearly demonstrating the beginning of doubts or of caution against an excessive faith in progress. The author of the essays is principally interested in the linguistic layer of the novels, the sci-fi terminology designating phenomena, objects or equipments from the imagined future. Handke analyzes the world reflected in the language and attempts to assemble a corpus invented by Lem in order to create an illusion of the future. The language seen from the perspective of the two texts remains a meaningful platform, but not a transparent one. This is where the space of the author's game with the readers begins, the space of inter-textual, cultural references, where the mentioned earlier naiveté of the older science fiction breaks down and an element of doubt, surprise, or irony surfaces frequently. The use of concrete linguistic means is conditioned by the creation of a world displaying a clearly determined character that borrows its particularities from the linguistic image of a fictional quasi-reality. It also

He who could have united the nations of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania, yet did not Revered, fluent in all Borderland languages, an excellent soldier; Stanisław Bułak-Bałachowicz, back when he was a subordinate of Nikolai Yudenich, tried to rename the unit under his command to the "People's Army", or in other words, the Territorial or National Army. The territorial understanding of "Belarusness", in conjunction with the nearly atavistic antibolshevism of Bałachowicz, were a great asset in Józef Piłsudski's new political combination. Piłsudski decided to benefit from Savinkov's idealistic approach for his own purpose. The Russian Political Committee, Bałachowicz's troops and the statements of Vyacheslav Adamovich (father were to support the establishment of Belarus for Belarusians. Full Text Available Colour was a very important problem in the whole work of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. Not only a whole chapter of his basic theoretical work Nowe formy w malarstwie (New Forms in Painting, published 1919 was devoted to that but the artist also examined his theory in practice executing many paintings presenting his ideas (e.g. Self-portrait, 1913, Portrait of Feliks Lewiński, 1917, Portrait of Maria Witkiewiczowa, 1918 and many others. A base for that was a harmony of complementary colours: green and red, blue and orange, violet and yellow. Many theorists before Witkacy were interested in that: Wolfgang Goethe, Philip Otto Runge, Wassili Kandinsky. The artist didn’t mention them in his deliberations but a psychologist, Hermann Ebinghaus (Grundzüge der Psychologie, 1897 and other artists only: Paul Gauguin and Pablo Picasso. Witkacy even copied one of Gauguin’s paintings, Te Arii Vahine and described it in his writings as the best example of Pure Form. Witkacy enthusiastically described Picasso’s paintings in his first novel 622 upadki Bunga (622 Downfalls of Bungo, written ca. 1910, first published 1972 and mentioned many times in his theoretical works. The artist appreciated also Georges Seurat’s paintings and his thoughts on colours. Witkacy himself created a detailed systempresenting the best colour schemes and described many compositions corresponding to that. In 1938 the artist wrote an article O istocie malarstwa (On the Essence of Painting, which was an opposition to his earlier thoughts. In the end of his life the artist decided that the most important was imagination instead of theoretical rules.

Rice cultivated on arsenic (As) contaminated-soils will accumulate variable grain-As concentrations, as impacted by varietal differences, soil variables, and crop management. A field-scale experiment was conducted to study the impact of intermittent and continuous flooding on As speciation and microbial populations in rice rhizosphere compartments of soils that were either historically amended with As pesticide or unamended with As. Rhizosphere-soil, root-plaque, pore-water and grain As were quantified and speciated, and microbial populations in rhizosphere soil and root-plaque were characterized. Total-As concentrations in rhizosphere and grain were significantly lower in intermittently flooded compared to the continuously flooded plots (86% lower in pore-water, 55% lower in root-plaque and 41% lower in grain samples). iAs(V), iAs(III), and DMAs(V) were the predominant As species detected in rhizosphere-soil and root-plaque, pore-water and grain samples, respectively. Relative proportions of Archaea and iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) were higher in rhizosphere soil compared to root-plaque. In rhizosphere soil, the relative abundance of FeRB was lower in intermittently flooded compared to continuously flooded plots, but there were no differences between root-plaque samples. This study has demonstrated that reductions in dissolved As concentrations in the rhizosphere and subsequent decreases in grain-As concentration can be attained through water management.

  3. Arsenic accumulation in rice: Consequences of rice genotypes and management practices to reduce human health risk.

Islam, Shofiqul; Rahman, Mohammad Mahmudur; Islam, M R; Naidu, Ravi

    2016-11-01

Rice is an essential staple food and feeds over half of the world's population. Consumption of rice has increased from limited intake in Western countries some 50years ago to major dietary intake now. Rice consumption represents a major route for inorganic arsenic (As) exposure in many countries, especially for people with a large proportion of rice in their daily diet as much as 60%. Rice plants are more efficient in assimilating As into its grains than other cereal crops and the accumulation may also adversely affect the quality of rice and their nutrition. Rice is generally grown as a lowland crop in flooded soils under reducing conditions. Under these conditions the bioavailability of As is greatly enhanced leading to excessive As bioaccumulation compared to that under oxidizing upland conditions. Inorganic As species are carcinogenic to humans and even at low levels in the diet pose a considerable risk to humans. There is a substantial genetic variation among the rice genotypes in grain-As accumulation as well as speciation. Identifying the extent of genetic variation in grain-As concentration and speciation of As compounds are crucial to determining the rice varieties which accumulate low inorganic As. Varietal selection, irrigation water management, use of fertilizer and soil amendments, cooking practices etc. play a vital role in reducing As exposure from rice grains. In the meantime assessing the bioavailability of As from rice is crucial to understanding human health exposure and reducing the risk. Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Full Text Available The paper analyses the category of neo-catastrophism. Postmodern society has launched the mechanisms of self-destruction which are now working not only in interpersonal and communicative relationships, but also in the realms of axiology, ethics and even ontology. According to the author, the main aspects of Jean Baudrillard’s and Jürgen Habermas’ philosophy can be interpreted as containing such neo-catastrophic message. However, as the forerunner of neo-catastrophism in philosophy the author points out Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy, especially his theory of metaphysical feelings and their disappearance in mass society. Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, known among the philosophy critics as neohumanistic catastrophist, has foreseen many categories which are typical for Habermas’ and Baudrillard’s writings. The neo-catastrophic mechanisms has a serious consequences for the condition of postmodern subject, the more so because the main part of the neocatastrophism is the strong conviction that there is no escape. The author, besides the main thesis mentioned above, highlights some common features between Baudillard’s and Habermas’ conceptions.

  12. Name Stanislaus (Stanisław in Slavic Onomastic Tradition

    2003-12-01

Full Text Available St. Stanislaus, bishop and martyr, is one of the few saints of the Church bearing a traditional Slavic name. It belongs to an Indo-European Anthroponomastic system as a compound name whose components represent a pattern inherited from the period of the Indo-European community. This is a fortune-telling name (a nomen-omen given to a child on a wish of the parents, who wanted him to be famous (Polish ‘slawa’ means ‘fame’- Today, in our Christian culture, in choosing a name for the child we consider the following: 1 the child ‘brought’ his/her name (i.e. is given the name of the day’s patron; this is the gist of our ‘nameday’, 2 a family tradition, 3 respect for the grandfather or father (grandmother, mother, 4 fashion. Today’s anthroponomastic system in Slavic languages (except Bulgarian has grown cold leaving us unable to acquire precise understanding of the meaning of the name. Besides, nowadays names only denote, they do not mean anything. Compound Slavic names refer in their structure to names from other groups of the Indo-European community and are closely linked with a nation’s spiritual culture and appropriate ultimate and instrumental values. In Indo-European languages a different number of lexical components is used in names as their first or second part: in Old Indian - 865; in Old Persian and Median - 43; in Greek - 1015; in the Celtic group - 336; the German one - 1800 and in the Slavic group - 220. The most numerous in Old Polish anthroponomastics were names with the component slaw. As the first component - slaw appears in 4 names, and as the second, in 100. This component has appeared from times immemorial in Indian, Avestan, Greek and Illyrian names. Name Stanislaus is known in all Slavic countries, while its feminine form only in Polish, Bulgarian, Serb and Croatian. In Poland it has been in use since very old times up to now. Numerous surnames and names of places derive from it. The popularity of the name waned slightly in the 19th century, but it has never come into disuse as was the case with many Slavic names, which were ‘dug out’ in the 19th century, and not infrequently, erroneously read. A great number of Indo-European names with the component - ‘slaw’ testifies to the fact that people who bore that name always wanted to be the bearers offame, good fame that is, such as St. Stanislaus, bishop and martyr, has enjoyed.

The aim of this paper is to present the philosophical background of Stanisław Zaremba's critique of Einstein's theory of relativity. In the 1920s, Zaremba was the most prominent Polish opponent of this theory. His papers influenced some discussions related to Einstein's theory, especially in France and in Poland. This paper takes also into account the development of Zaremba's critique. The analysis of his papers shows that he never became a follower of the Einstein's theory of relativity. Such a statement compels us to confront it with the previous interpretations of Zaremba's thought.

Works written by the Poznań based expressionists Stanisław Kubicki and Józef Wittlin provide the appropriate context for the poem.

Using notions and concepts of the so called "black American feminism" the author (referring extensively to books by Stanisław Grzesiuk and Zofia Romanowiczowa shows how in the concentration camp the human body became the only space of a relative privacy of the prisoner. At the same time the body becomes a territory on which all - both biological and socially constructed - human fates cross.

    2014-06-01

Pojęcie zasobów obejmuje mózg, ciało i środowisko.

Similar assumptions are the basis of the pedagogical concept of the environmental educational system by Stanisław Kowalski. Luca Bernardini

The second play partly centered on a biblical theme is Akropolis (1904, a monumental drama set in Cracow’s Pantheon, the Wawel cathedral. In the second act of the play, the characters of the tapestries hanging on the walls of the cathedral come to life. One of the tapestries portraits the story of Jacob (Genesis: 25-33. Wyspiański was very likely inspired by  Raffaello’s fresco paintings in Eliodor’s room at the Vatican, and by Gerhard Hauptmann’s fragment Das Hirtenlied. The playwright closely follows the text of the Bible but for a few „apocryphical” insertions, the more relevant of which refer to Jacob’s struggle with the Angel. The Angel defies Jacob, founder of tribes”, claiming that he’ll thread „on the weak ones, in this graveyard of tribes”. Much has been debated on where the action of the drama should take place. Wyspiański himself thought about staging Akropolis in the cathedral on the Wawel hill, but the best known production of the play, performed by Jerzy Grotowski (1962, dispensed from the original setting. For Wyspiański, the cathedral on the Wawel hill, with her tombs, was the most significant achievement in Polish national history  and culture, but for Grotowski the most meaningful event in the history of the whole humankind had taken place in Auschwitz extermination camp. Grotowski sees the setting of the play – using Wyspianski’s words - „in a graveyard of tribes”. This graveyard is not longer the peaceful and magnificent cathedral where the playwright used to stroll in search of inspiration, but a dramatically real one, the graveyard in which millions of human beings belonging to all nations have been buried after having completed the crematorium in which they and their companions will be burned. Grotowski has not altered Wyspiański’s lines, just changed the order of the scenes, so that Jacob’s struggle with the Angel could be at the centre of  a play which could be reintepreted by the light shed on Auschwitz  extermination machine by Tadeusz Borowski’s concentrationary  short stories. The last line of the play comes from a caption imagined by Wyspiański for its monumental drama, but the old words have for the modern audience a tragic and complete new meaning: „they’re gone, spirals of smoke float in the air”.

Stanisław Brzozowski (1878-1911, the beginning publicist, literary critic and novelist spoke against Sienkiewicz’s famous works. Sienkiewicz’s main novels have been criticised for their conservatism and lack of social progressiveness, although they display great narrative power and contain vivid characterisations in a style full of imagery. The lack of national independence created greater reverence towards national history in 19th century Polish literature. Sienkiewicz felt a close bond with the Polish nobility. Brzozowski tried to put his own philosophy of culture and his concept of the “philosophy of labour” into practice. He spoke as am exponent of Polish modernism and socialism.

. After this judgment, the prosecution filed a motion to reconsider the acquittal in Perišić, which the Appeals Chamber denied. In sum, these developments diluted and mischaracterized the standard of aiding and abetting. Accordingly, this article has two purposes. First, it demonstrates......The ‘specific direction’ saga has been dominating the jurisprudence of the ICTY for nearly two years, and the end is yet to be seen. The story centers on the correct interpretation of liability for aiding and abetting, while, at the same time, exposing broader concerns of international criminal law....... The saga started with unexpected acquittals of Perišić, Stanišić, and Simatović due to a lack of specific direction in their aid and assistance towards specific offences. More specifically, the tribunal found that the traditional test - the provision of aid with the awareness that it would have...

The starting point are childish skirmishes with God, consisting in experiments with values established in Western culture. In the same time the character keeps obligatory rules because of Nietzscheanian "must". Another level is positive nihilism in which the protagonist replaces values by statistic concepts. The last, the most important, is the moment of recognition of "cosmic letter"'s senders as representatives of "favoring virtue", and this act expresses Nietzscheanian "want".

Full Text Available Critical reflections over marxist ideology, and especially political system in the USSR, were present in the polish political thought in the first half of the XXth century, due to publications, among others, by Adam Krzyżanowski, Stanisław Mackiewicz or Marian Zdziechowski. An important role in spreading anti-communist ideas played magazine “Fight with bolshevism” established in 1927 by Henryk Glass. The main task of the editorial board was to inform the Polish nation about the threats coming out from communism. To fulfill this task, magazine published official papers of the Communist International, communist parties, soviet government etc., along with some communist confidential materials. “Fight with bolshevism” used all possible means to warn the society of the danger coming from the east. The author talks over the most important problems and topics took up by the magazine, as well as the social undertakings supported by it.

W artykule przedstawiony został sposób wyznaczania i opisu wskaźnika PCN

Full Text Available The aim of this paper is to rethink three important issues that refer to Communes of the Polish People’s history. Firstly, it proposes a new understanding of organization frames, in which this group acted, using the Eric Hobsbawm’s term labour sects. Secondly, the intention is to undermine the understanding of the ideological development of this organization through the prism of theoretical activity of Stanisław Worcell and Zenon Świętosławski. In this case it proposes to show Communes of the Polish People in the context of changing of Polish political vocabulary in the 1830s and 1840s using the Reinhardt Koselleck’s term Sattelzeit. In this case the most durable achievement of Communes is invention of the term “Poland of the People” (Polska Ludowa. And thirdly, the article shows that references to Communes became extinct in the 1880s, at the time of the twilight of Romanticism.

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission is the first mission dedicated to measuring tropical and subtropical rainfall using a variety of remote sensing instrumentation, including the first spaceborne rain-measuring radar. Since the energy released when tropical rainfall occurs is a primary "fuel" supply for the weather and climate "engine"; improvements in computer models which predict future weather and climate states may depend on better measurements of global tropical rainfall and its energy. In support of the STANYS conference theme of Education and Space, this presentation focuses on one aspect of NASA's Earth Systems Science Program. We seek to present an overview of the TRMM mission. This overview will discuss the scientific motivation for TRMM, the TRMM instrument package, and recent images from tropical rainfall systems and hurricanes. The presentation also targets educational components of the TRMM mission in the areas of weather, mathematics, technology, and geography that can be used by secondary school/high school educators in the classroom.

Full Text Available The article concerns the theme of extermination of the mentally ill and handicapped in Polish literature. It outlines the basic facts regarding this crime perpetrated by the Nazis and indicates how Polish literature reacted to it. There are few works which deal with this crime. Writers (and historians probably considered the extermination of the mentally ill to be a fact of insignificance compared to other Nazi crimes, or knew little about it. Thus Polish literature treats it incidentally, by entering it in another, more extensive or “more important” issue (the extermination of the Jews, the extermination of the Polish population, or treats it as an occasion to take up “more fundamental” (ideological problems. The article analyzes famous works, Stanisław Lem’s novel Hospital of the Transfiguration and Andrzej Bursa’s poem The liquidation of the mentally ill in Kobierzyn by the Germans, and less known texts: Piotr Matywiecki’s poem *** [Dragged into the sun….] and Anna Dziewit-Meller’s novel Mount Taygetus.

Full Text Available The article presents an analysis of the concept of “historicity”, which seems to be crucial for the understanding of the philosophical foundations of Miłosz’s work. The poet’s intention is to find a solution for the double dilemma of modern historical imagination: on the one hand, you should not become prey to the “murderous historicité”, but on the other, human life, when totally deprived of the historical dimension, seems to be empty and worthless. Miłosz found a solution of the dilemma in Stanisław Brzozowski’s philosophy, especially in his idea of of indispensability of historical consciousness, that is of “amplification” of historicity. The paradoxical, at first sight, attempt to overcome the disastrous consequences of historical thought through amplification of historicity itself, is seen in a wider contest of 20th-century philsophical investigations (Michaił Bachtin, Martin Heidegger, Barbara Skarga. It turns out that poetic discourse is the right place for its realization.

The paper considers some results of creating load-carrying composite systems that have uprated strength, rigidity and safety, and therefore are called geometrically (self-) hardening systems. The optimization mathematic models of structures as discrete mechanical systems withstanding dead load, monotonic or low cyclic static and kinematic actions are proposed. To find limit parameters of these actions the extreme energetic principle is suggested what result in the bilevel mathematic programming problem statement. The limit parameters of load actions are found on the first level of optimization. On the second level the power of the constant load with equilibrium preloading is maximized and/or system cost is minimized. The examples of using the proposed methods are presented and geometrically hardening composite steel-concrete system are taken into account.

Full Text Available In this article, the model of an inconsistent mind according to suggestions of Hilary Putnam and Alan Turing is presented from the perspective of the cognitive sciences and the evolutionary psychology. An attempt to reconcile the two versions of the modular model of mind by Jerry Fodor and Steven Pinker is undertaken followed by the discussion of the problem of evolutionary origin of mind. Next, the problem of the central module (interface is considered which is supposed to integrate the individual and specialized modules of mind. The main thesis of this article states that the ‘global’ inconsistency of mind may result from the inconsistencies among ‘local’ computational modules of mind. Mind may be modeled as an inconsistent formal system which remains non-trivial. Consequently, it seems rational to postulate that the operation of mind is not based on the classical Aristotelian logic and is better described the systems of a paraconsistent logic. Best examples of such logical systems include the discussive logic by Stanisław Jaśkowski, the logic of formal inconsistency (LFI by Newton da Costa and the many-valued logic by Jan Łukasiewicz and Graham Priest.

The historic manor house - park complex is located in the centre of a village called Sieciechowice. It lies not far from Cracow, at a distance of approximately 30 km from the Wawel Castle hill. It is one of the most interesting architectural and urban objects found in the krakowski country district and in Małopolska region. The spatial development of the built-up features was closely related to the urban layout of villages. The special arrangement was characterised by a great diversity of historic residences, backup facilities and greenery. The original estate, containing several buildings and engineering structures, constituted a vital part of Sieciechowice. The buildings provided vivid illustrations of manor house and palace architecture. The estate was in the hands of the Rey family. The war events, makeshift repairs, lack of ideas on the management of the estate and permanent lack of funds, however, resulted in the decline of this once splendid estate.

Full Text Available 1.

The nation as community of culture is in opinion of the said parties exposed to dangers. The main risks are in their opinion as follows: cosmopolitism, Communist ideology, individualism, liberalism; secularization. In Poland, such ideas are, in the opinion of the National Right Wing, propagated by the liberal and post-communist circles. In the beginning they demanded that the communist activists are brought to justice. Some columnists refer to antisemitism. They perceive also the fall of the literary output. They assess critically the novels of Czesław Miłosz, Stanisław Barańczak or Olga Tokarczuk. Similar assessments regard the works of Polish historians. As preventive measures the following is mentioned: appropriate educational activity, statutory protection of national heritage, broadening of Catholicism, promotion of national culture. They attach great importance to the national branding. Its components are history, language, political regime, architecture, literature, art, religion, icons landscape, music. They would probably accept the opinion of Michael Porter: “Many contemporary discussions of international competition stress global homogenization and a diminished role for nations. But, in truth, national differences are at the heart of competitive success.”   Ochrona kultury narodowej w koncepcjach współczesnej prawicy narodowej w Polsce W centrum systemu wartości odrodzonego po 1989 roku ruchu narodowego pozostają naród, rodzina i religia. W Polsce wspomniane idee

Full Text Available In this paper, the author presents the final period of the French Revolution as interpretated by Andrzej Wajda. The screenplay was prepared by Jean-Claude Carrière based on Stanisława Przybyszewska’s drama (also used by Wajda as a screenplay in many dramas. It helped the director to describe the reality of the intense time of Robespierre’s terror and Jacobin efforts to guillotine Danton and his allies. Wajda reveals the same mechanisms of crime, manipulation and lies which became the backdrop for political events in Poland between 1981-1983 (especially with the introduction of martial law in Poland in 1981. The model of Danton’s fall and the strengthening of totalitarian rule are considered the current model of history, which is based on cruelty and the struggle for power. The film forms the basis for a broader view of history as the tragic entanglement of events, which is the result of hubris and the desire for material goods, and is the origin of totalitarian rule. References to the emblems of the revolution, allegories, and the symbolism of art (paintings of David are the fundamental ekphrasis of meanings set by the film. Wajda’s analysis of Danton shows some typical ways of understanding and interpreting the signs of culture and history.

The SERVQUAL method is widely used for assessing the quality expected by patients and the quality of actually provided services. Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to determine if patients from state and private health care facilities differed in terms of their qualitative priorities and assessments of received services.Materials and methods: The study included a total of 412 patients: 211 treated at a state facility and 201 treated at a private facility. Each of the respondents completed a 5-domain, 22-item SERVQUAL questionnaire. The actual quality of health care services in both types of facilities proved significantly lower than expected. Results: All the patients gave the highest scores to the domains constituting the core aspects of health care services. The private facility respondents had the highest expectations with regard to equipment, and the state facility ones regarding contacts with the medical personnel. Conclusion: Health care quality management should be oriented toward comprehensive optimization in all domains, rather than only within the domain identified as the qualitative priority for patients of a given facility. Keywords: health care service quality, patients’ expectations, qualitative priorities, outpatient health care facilities

Do określania form i okresów występowania zjawisk lodowych wykorzystano historyczne dane hydrologiczne, a współczynniki redukcji zimowej ustalono, analizując stany i przepływy.

Full Text Available Przegląd Powszechny” was founded in 1884 by a Polish Jesuit Marian Morawski. This monthly periodical aimed at promoting the knowledge of Catholic principles among intellectuals and to reflect upon the current issues concerning social, academic, or literary life. Extensive articles in the fields of literature, history, philosophy, theology, religious studies, social ethics were published. Regular columns referred to the contemporary national, social, cultural and religious issues as well as book reviews. One of the social issues raised in the periodical was the problems concerning the contemporary family. The authors drew attention to the role of the family in educating; they addressed issues concerning pro-family education. They provided interpretation for the “legal aspect of the issue” regarding divorce or abortion. Through their contributions, they also wanted to sensitize the readers to the situation of Polish children in the family, or the necessity of health education for the Polish family. They participated in events connected with family issues and through reports informed society e.g. about the initiatives undertaken within this scope. Among those who explored family issues in “Przegląd Powszechny” was Stanisław Podoleński SJ. According to Janina Kostkiewicz, he was characterized by “involvement, long-standing and continuing, in the issues once focused on”. He displayed the knowledge of “initiatives undertaken in the issues examined through adequate organizations, associations, authorities of various levels”. In the Second Polish Republic, “Przegląd Powszechny” was one of the periodicals where the discourse upon the condition of the Polish family, its problems and dilemmas was undertaken

    2012-01-01

Full Text Available The aim of the author of the article is to investigate Miłosz’s relation to Stanisław Brzozowski. Proceeding from the interpretation of Miłosz’s Człowiek wśród skorpionów..., and diagnosing his personal motivation for turning to Brzozowski’s works in 1963, the author investigates the avenues of dialogue between Miłosz and Brzozowski, and their unsystematically expresses common points. The article, thus, presents various stages of influence of Brzozowski’s work and ideas on Miłosz: from the 1930s, when Miłosz was inspired by Brzozowski’s left-wing fanaticism, through the common opposition against anti-intellectualism and the Polish identity understood as a set of Romantic symbols and gestures, up to the fascination with Russian culture and Marxism. The deepest affinity of both authors seems to be the attitude of anthropocentrism, identified and exposed by Miłosz himself, and understood as hostility towards nature and belief in nature’s determinism, but also as a formula that gives coherence to the philosophical themes, found in both authors’ work, which are thought to be polarised and incompatible. In the conclusion, the author of the article states that positioning himself with reference to Brzozowski was, for Miłosz, a tool of self-creation, an attempt to control the reception and interpretation of his own work, and to place Miłosz in a separate and exceptional position, akin to the position of Brzozowski, the extraordinary and unrecognized philosopher and critic of Polish early modernism.

Full Text Available My article deals with an unusual story on the roots of a song that has left a significant imprint on the twentieth century popular music all over the world. It is the song Misirlou, created somewhere on the territory of the Ottoman Empire, probably in Asia Minor. The author of this song is unknown. It was created in the so-called rebetiko musical style, typical of the Greeks from Asia Minor, who developed that style after the World War I. The first recordings of this song were made in the 1930s by Greek musicians Tethos Demetriades and Mihalis Patrinos. In no time, there was a true proliferation of different versions of this song, in almost every possible musical genre: jazz, latino, taksym, klezmer, makam, Serbian folk, hip hop, trash metal, pop and rock’n’roll. A number of these versions are mentioned in the article. The fact that this song is considered by many nations – Greeks, Turks, Arabs, Serbs, Jews, Americans – as their own, demonstrates its aptitude for incredible metamorphoses. What attracted me to this song was the story on how it was appropriated into Serbian folk music by the remarkable composer and singer Dragoljub Dragan Toković. The song was called Lela Vranjanka [Lela, the girl from Vranje] and became a standard in the so-called “Vranje folk music”, marvelously interpreted by the singer Staniša Stošić. I also compare various textual versions of Misirlou, in different languages, in order to show its parallel development in verse. Full Text Available Engaging customer is the burning issue for companies especially the service sector, either online or offline. Minimizing the customer disengagement is the same like reducing dissatisfaction or churn. Customer disengagement may be caused by many factors, ad skepticism is one of them; ad skepticism has two main antecedents personality variable and consumption/influencing varia-bles. This research explores the relationship of ad skepticism with customer disengagement through personality variables which are cynicism, reactance and self-esteem. The unit of analysis is the telecom and banking industry of Pakistan which is foreseeing an era of virtual currency and both are customer oriented industries. Only offline disengagement is researched and data is collected from the Business centers of telecom and banking branches dealing with virtual curren-cy in Pakistan. Hypothetical model is given after digging the relevant literature; model is tested through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Eight hypotheses were purposed from the connections of model, all hypotheses are accepted except the cynicism posi-tive effect on social ad skepticism. This can be due to commonality of social and charity in Paki-stani society, Muslims consider charity as a pious act and they do not think for cynic behavior in charity or social related works. The results manifest that customers in telecom industry are hav-ing ad skepticism and that is becoming the cause of their disengagement. Further, social ad skep-ticism has more impact on the customer disengagement than the general ad skepticism. While the reactance has more effect on general ad skepticism than other antecedents and cynicism has the lowest impact on social ad skepticism than other antecedents.

Full Text Available Aspergillosis is a frequent fungal disease in different species of birds and mammals caused by fungi of the genus Aspergillus. It is characterized by inflammatory changes primarily in the respiratory system, even though it sometimes takes on a generalized form when several organ systems are affected. Mucotic-granulomatous meningoencephalitis with a predominant localization in the cerebellum has been described in turkeys, ducks and geese. Within this paper, examinations have been performed on a flock of broiler turkeys aged 12 days who had sustained evident neurological disorders in the form of ataxy, torticollis, paresis, and paralysis of the hind extremities and wings. In three of the ten autopsied chicks the macroscopic findings indicated granulomatous encephalitis of the cerebellum. A white-coloured granuloma, around 3mm in diameter, was situated cranioventrally and was clearly visible on the sagital section of the cerebellum. Mucological examinations of the cerebellum lesion resulted in the isolation of the fungi Aspergillus fumigatus. Haematoxylin-eosin (HE, Grocott and PAS methods were used for the evaluation of histopathological changes and proving Aspergillus fumigatusa hyphae. The microscopic examination of brain tissue sections stained with the HE method revealed the existence of a granuloma with a centrally placed necrotic area. The necrotic area was infiltrated with heterophilic granulocytes and surrounded by macrophage, giant cells and lymphocytes. A connective tissue capsule was located on the periphery of the granuloma. The fungi hyphae, as integral parts of the granuloma, were difficult to observe, and in some samples stained using the HE method they could not be seen at all. On the other hand, sections stanied using the Grocott and PAS methods showed prominent septed and branched hyphae in different parts of the granuloma. With the objective of making an etiological diagnosis of mucotic diseases, it is necessary to apply several

Both, the woodcuts of the Leopolita’s Bible (1561, 1575/1577 and the notes to the commentary on the Acts of the Apostles by Tomas Falconius (1566 give an account of the tumultuous history of Polish Reformation. The dedication in the second edition of Leopolita’s Bible (1975 and its alteration in 1577 attest to the failure of the first free royal election in Poland. The manuscript notes in Wrocław copy of Simon Budny’s Bible (1572 constitute an eyewitness account of the collapse of Poland at the end of 18th century. Whereas, the manuscript notes in the translation of Psalter by W. Wróbel constitute a chronicle of the Wilieziński family. Therefore, while talking about the history of Polish biblical translations one can talk about the history of Poland as a country, at the same time.

  18. Resources for the User's Guide to the Royal Hetman's Archives in archives and library collections

Full Text Available This article is an overview of archival collections with provenance of hetman's archives, but physically separated into collections in archives and libraries across Poland (Kraków, Kórnik, Łódź, Poznań, Warszawa and also Ukraine (Kiev, Lviv. Research, which later became an inspiration for this overview, has been conducted mainly in the early 90s. In the light of the above, this article does not claim to be called a "guide" to the royalhetmans' archives of the sixteenth through to the eighteenth century, but it could be viewed as an outline of such archival finding aid. This overview focuses on characteristics of different types of archival material, which author considered integrally connected to holding of an office of hetman, i.e.: personal, administrative and military, judiciary, financial, and also correspondence. Qualification criteria may raise some concerns, because selection of archives is subjective by nature, but also because in the discussed time period there was social consensus on the fact that one's private life and public sphere would overlap. Most of the archival materials used in this study comes from the hetman's archives of the eighteenth century (Jan Clement Branicki's; Franciszek Ksawery Branicki's; Stanisław Mateusz, Wacław, Seweryn Rzewuski's and Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski's. Eighteen century is considered to be the peak of development of private archives, which - without a doubt - had great impact on the preservation of hetman's archives of that period. Moreover, the fact that there is significantly larger collection of hetman's archives of that period, compared to previous two centuries, is the result of the hetman's office having a special place within the political system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

  20. PROJEKTOWANIE NOWYCH I MODERNIZACJA ISTNIEJĄCYCH OBIEKTÓW MOSTOWYCH W ASPEKCIE OCHRONY PRZYRODY I KRAJOBRAZU NA PRZYKŁADZIE REALIZACJI W REGIONIE PODLASIA, WARMII I MAZUR

  1. Historiografia wobec Action Francaise

Full Text Available Action Franęaise in HistoriographyFrench radical right movement, Action Franęaise belongs to those political phe- nomenon in history which are differently interpreted by historiography. Principally we have eight interpretations. First ofthem is Action Franęaise own image and identity as royalist and anti-liberal "party of order”. One of the most important historical interpretation of this movement is French historian Rene Remond’s one. In his Les Droites aujourdhui Remond argued that Action Franęaise was model example of anti-liberal Right in France and in Europe of the first half of the XX century. The most popular interpretation of Action Franęaise are two: (1 Action Franęaise as an incarnation of conservative revolution (Carl Schmitt and (2 as the ideology of "integral nationalism” (Hans Konh, Carlton Hayes. Very original concept was developed by well known German historian Ernst Nolte, who considered Action Franęaise as pro- to-fascistmovement. British thinker Isaiah Berlin and Israeli historian Zeev Sternhell interpreted Action Franęaise as revolution of "anti-Enlightment” (les anti-Lumieres. Polish philosopher Stanisław Brzozowski argued that Action Franęaise was a con- seąuence of conflict between romanticism and positivism and was sure that Action Franęaise inherited much from positivistphilosophy. Non less controversial problem is forthehistorians the excommunication of Action Franęaise by Pope Pius XI in 1926. To our days there are many opposite attempts to reconstruct of this event and its origins. For many historians Pius XI tried to defend the doctrine of the Church which seemed to him intoxicated by the "nationalist and racialist heresy”. For some other writers the Vatican policy was under German influence and this caused papai action. In 1939 another Pope Pius XII decided to abolish the condemnation from 1926.

When applying for a chair of philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow in 1891, Wincentego Lutosławskiego had already published a number of important articles as well as a doctoral dissertation, which he defended at Dorpat University. While working at the University of Kazan, Lutosławskiego had been engaged in several research sojourns abroad, including one in London. He had also made contact with another Polish specialist on Plato's philosophy, Stanisław Pawlicki, who gave a positive referral on the publication of Lutosławskiego's work On Plato's logic, part I by Akademia Umiejtno [ci (Academy of Science) in Cracow (1891); the subsequent conflict between the two scholars stemmed from differences in world-view and differences in scholarly views relating to methodology and interpretation. The application by Lutosławskiego, despite being supported by the dean of Faculty of Philosophy, Maurycy Staszewski, the only philosophy sitting on the faculty council, was rejected, and the majority of faculty council opted for Pawlicki, a renowned professor of the Faculty of Theology. Lutosławskiego continued to pursue his scholarly career abroad, publishing in several European languages, until the publication in 1897 of his famous work on Plato (The Origin and Growth of Plato's Logic). Meanwhile Pawlicki, burdened both by his teaching responsibilities and the results of the research by Lutosławskiego, was not able to complete (before his death in 1916) his History of ancient philosophy, the intention of doing which he had declared in the first volume, published in 1890. While Lutosławskiego was prevented from working in Crackow, he became - thanks to his works - a historian of ancient philosophy whose world renown has persisted until the present day. Pawlicki obtained the Chair, but his works on the history of philosophy are rarely cited today.

The main objective of this study was to conduct an analysis of the rheological properties of A380.0 (AlSi9Cu3(Fe aluminium alloy in the semi-solid state. The results could be used for identification of temperature range of the alloy, where thixoforming processes could be executed. Another purpose of the experimental work could be development of the mathematical models of the alloy apparent viscosity. The significant achievement of this particular study is an application of a viscometer which was specially designed for material tests executed at high temperatures, such as the measurement of liquid or semi-liquid aluminium viscosity. This paper presents the results of a rheological analysis of aluminium alloy.

Full Text Available Nowodworski Schools, whose current institutionalized continuator is Bartłomiej Nowodworski High School, have a legacy of a long history. The idea to found private schools was initially brought forward by the authorities and professors of the Cracovian University in 1586. The project was finally launched in 1588 mainly due to energetic steps taken by the subsequent chancellor of the Cracovian University doctor of medicine – Stanisław Pik Zawadzki. Over the first decades of its existence the schools faced numerous hardship. The institution was underfunded and both professors and students were exposed to epidemics so frequent in those times, such as for instance the plague in September 1588. Some conservative professors of the University also called for closing the academic colonies. Despite all the predicaments, the institution managed to survive. The most important benefactor for private schools in those difficult years was a Cracovian bishop Piotr Tylicki (in office: 1607–1616, who with the consent of the local chapter, donated PLN 10 000 to fund a separate professor department where the professors were obliged to give a one hour daily lecture in The Upper College as well as 2 hour classes in pronunciation and stylistic in private schools. The situation, however, did not improved significantly. In those times of crisis of private schooling there appeared the foundations of the Knight of the Maltese Order – Barłomiej Nowodworski. Nowodworski was a benefactor for numerous institutions, however, his most famous charity was his foundations for Nowodworski Schools. He donated PLN 8000 in 1612, 1617 and PLN 7000 in 1619 making it possible for those private schools to survive the difficult times. Nowodworski Schools had many benefactors, however, besides the foundation of B. Nowodworski the most prominent benefactors were Gabriel Prewancjusz Władysławski. He donated PLN 50 000. Thanks to his efforts and with the contribution from the King

The aim of this pilot study was to assess the efficacy and safety of oxycodone hydrochloride in epidural blockade among patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA.Patients and methods: In 11 patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification system II/III, age range: 59–82 years, THA was conducted with an epidural blockade using 15 mL 0.25% bupivacaine (37.5 mg with 5 mg oxycodone hydrochloride and sedation with propofol infusion at a dose of 3–5 mg/kg/h. After the surgery, patients received ketoprofen at a dose of 100 mg twice daily. In the first 24 hours postoperative period, pain was assessed by numerical rating scale at rest and on movement; adverse effects (AEs were recorded; and plasma concentrations of oxycodone, noroxycodone, and bupivacaine were measured. Results: The administration of epidural oxycodone at a dose of 5 mg in patients undergoing THA provided analgesia for a mean time of 10.3±4.89 h. In one patient, mild pruritus was observed. Oxycodone did not evoke other AEs. Plasma concentrations of oxycodone while preserving analgesia were >2.9 ng/mL. Noroxycodone concentrations in plasma did not guarantee analgesic effect. Conclusion: The administration of epidural oxycodone at a dose of 5 mg prolongs the analgesia period to ~10 hours in patients after THA. Oxycodone may evoke pruritus. A 5 mg dose of oxycodone hydrochloride used in an epidural blockade seems to be a safe drug in patients

Ceramikę BLT wytworzono z mieszaniny prostych tlenków La203, TiOi i BaCOj (wszystkie o czystości 99,9+%, Aldrich Chemical Co. Proszki ceramiczne otrzymano metodą konwencjonalną w stanie stałym (metodą MOM i poddano badaniu mikrostruktury i struktury krystalicznej. Badania mikrostruktury i struktury krystalicznej ceramiki przeprowadzono w temperaturze pokojowej. Badania EDS potwierdziły zachowanie stechiometrii otrzymanych próbek według wzoru chemicznego. Rentgenowska analiza dyfrakcyjna potwierdziły wytworzenie pożądanej struktury krystalicznej zarówno czystej ceramiki BaTiOj jak i z domieszką Lau. Otrzymana ceramika wykazuje strukturę typu perowskitu A BO? o symetrii tetragonalnej P4 mm.

In the days free of parliamentary debates, Grodno’s Dominicans prepared a series of physics experiments for the king. The course of the experiments and their subject matter is known from a press release (Pismo Peryodyczne Korrespondenta 2, January 9, 1794, pp. 35–42. It is a type of daily report informing about 18 meetings, each time indicating their subject matter. This report was sufficient to recreate the course and the type of the experiments. Three thematic groups presented by the Dominicans can be distinguished. The first is a presentation of the physics cabinet – the king was visited, among others, the Nooth’s apparatus to produce “carbonated water”, a geological collection and other items used in the later shows. The second series of demonstrations was devoted to issues related to electricity. The idea and nature of lightning was also demonstrated. The third series of presentations concerned the properties of gases. In addition to other demonstrations, the Dominicans prepared an experiment which presented the process of producing water from oxygen and hydrogen. The experiment lasted all day, during which the reagents were measured: the volume of gases that were used and the mass of the water obtained. The report brings a lot of important information, indicating the level of scientific knowledge and the experimental skills of the Dominicans. It is evidence of how modern physics was taught by the Dominicans with the use of appropriate instruments for this purpose. It is also a source of knowledge about school equipment in Poland. Additionally, the report is so far one of the few well-documented public demonstrations prepared for the king. It also confirms the view that the

The binary covalent bioconjugate of G3, with nine molecules of biotin per one molecule of G3 (G39B, and the ternary covalent bioconjugate of G3, with nine biotin and ten pyridoxal molecules (G39B10P, were synthesized. The biotin and pyridoxal residues of the bioconjugate were available for carboxylase and transaminase enzymes, as demonstrated in the conversion of pyruvate to oxaloacetate and alanine to pyruvate, respectively, by in vitro monitoring of the reactions, using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The toxicity of the ternary bioconjugate (BC-PAMAM was studied in vitro on BJ human normal skin fibroblasts and human squamous cell carcinoma (SCC-15 cell cultures in comparison with PAMAM G3, using three cytotoxicity assays (XTT, neutral red, and crystal violet and an estimation of apoptosis by confocal microscopy detection. The tests have shown that BC-PAMAM has significantly lower cytotoxicity compared with PAMAM. Nonconjugated PAMAM was not cytotoxic at concentrations up to 5 µM (NR and 10 µM (XTT, and BC-PAMAM was not cytotoxic up to 50 µM (both assays for both cell lines. It has been also found that normal fibroblasts were more sensitive than SCC to both PAMAM and BC-PAMAM. The effect of PAMAM and BC-PAMAM on the initiation of apoptosis (PAMAM in fibroblasts at 5 µM and BC-PAMAM at 10 µM in both cell lines corresponded with cytotoxicity assays for both cell lines. We concluded that normal fibroblasts are more sensitive to the cytotoxic effects of the PAMAM G3 dendrimer and that modification of its surface cationic groups by substitution with biologically active molecules

Full Text Available Artykuł przedstawia praktyczne zastosowanie specjalistycznego oprogramowania inżynierskiego do modelowania matematycznego istniejących systemów wodociągowych.

Full Text Available Efektywne, nastawione na możliwie kompletną poprawę objawową i funkcjonalną leczenie schizofrenii i choroby afektywnej dwubiegunowej pozostaje w dzisiejszym stanie wiedzy zadaniem trudnym.

A stoppage of the main ventilation fan constitutes a disturbance of ventilation conditions of a deepmine and its effects can cause serious hazards by generating transient states of air and gas flow. Main ventilation fans are the basic deep-mine facilities; therefore, under mining regulations it is only allowed to stop them with the consent and under the conditions specified by the mine maintenance manager. The stoppage of the main ventilation fan may be accompanied by transient air parameters, including the air pressure and flow patterns. There is even the likelihood of reversing the direction of air flow, which, in case of methane mines, can pose a major hazard, particularly in sections of the mine with fire fields or large goaf areas. At the same time, stoppages of deep-mine main ventilation fans create interesting research conditions, which if conducted under the supervision of the monitoring systems, can provide much information about the transient processes of pressure, air and gas flow in underground workings. This article is a discussion of air parameter observations in mine workings made as part of such experiments. It also presents the procedure of the experiments, conducted in three mines. They involved the observation of transient processes of mine air parameters, and most interestingly, the recording of pressure and air and gas flow in the workings of the mine ventilation networks by mine monitoring systems and using specialist recording instruments. In mining practice, both in Poland and elsewhere, software tools and computer modelling methods are used to try and reproduce the conditions prior to and during disasters based on the existing network model and monitoring system data. The use of these tools to simulate the alternatives of combating and liquidation of the gas-fire hazard after its occurrence is an important issue. Measurement data collected during the experiments provides interesting research material for the verification and validation of the software tools used for the simulation of processes occurring in deep-mine ventilation systems.

National Epidemiological Institute (National Institute of Hygiene, from 7th September 1923) was established in 1918 in Warsaw and acted at national level. Its actions in the field of diseases combat were supported by bacteriological stations and vaccine production in voivodeship cities, which were taken charge of by the state, and names "National Epidemiological Institutes". According to the ministers resolution from 6th July 1921,Epidemiological Institutes were merged to National Central Epidemiological Institutes (PZH), the epidemiological institutes outside Warsaw were named branches, which were to be located in every voivodeship city, according to the initial organizational resolutions. There were country branches of NCEI in: Cracow, Lwów, Lódź, Toruń, Lublin, and Wilno in the period 1919-1923. New branches in Poznań (1925), Gdynia(1934), Katowice (Voivodeship Institute of Hygiene (1936), Luck (1937), Stanisławów (1937), Kielce(1938), and Brześć/Bug (Municipal Station acting as branch of National Central Epidemiological Institute. Branches were subordinated to NCEI-PZH) in Warsaw where action plans and unified research and diagnostic method were established and annual meeting of the country branches managers took place. All branches cooperated with hospitals, national health services, district general practitioners and administration structure in control of infectious diseases. In 1938, the post of branch inspector was established, the first of whom was Feliks Przesmycki PhD. Branches cooperated also with University of Cracow, University of Lwów and University of Wilno. In 1935, National Institutes of Food Research was incorporated in PZH, Water Department was established, and these areas of activity began to develop in the branches accordingly. In 1938 there were 13 branches of PZH, and each had three divisions: bacteriological, food research and water research. Three branches in Cracow, Kielce and Lublin worked during World War II under German

  2. Neuroprotekcyjne właściwości związków pochodzenia roślinnego: triterpeny pentacykliczne

Full Text Available Ludzki mózg to struktura wykazująca ogromną zmienność w ciągu życia osobniczego. W pracy omówiono właściwości neuroprotekcyjne kwasu ursolowego, oleanolowego, maslinowego, asjatowego, betulinowego, bosweliowego oraz saponin triterpenowych pozyskiwanych z roślin Bupleurum i Panax ginseng.

After 24 hours treatment, both cell lines revealed different patterns of intracellular dendrimer accumulation depending on their cytotoxic effects. Cancer cells exhibited much higher (20-fold tolerance for native PAMAM treatment than fibroblasts, whereas BC-PAMAM was significantly toxic only for fibroblasts at 50 µM concentration. Fibroblasts accumulated the native and bioconjugated dendrimers in a concentration-dependent manner at nontoxic range of concentration, with significantly lower bioconjugate loading. After reaching the cytotoxicity level, fluorescein isothiocyanate-PAMAM accumulation remains at high, comparable level. In cancer cells, native PAMAM loading at higher, but not cytotoxic concentrations, was kept at constant level with a sharp increase at toxic concentration. Mander’s coefficient calculated for fibroblasts and cancer cells confirmed more efficient native PAMAM penetration as compared to BC-PAMAM. Significant differences in nuclear dendrimer penetration were observed for both cell lines. In cancer cells, PAMAM signals amounted to ~25%–35% of the total nuclei area at all

Full Text Available Tematem artykułu jest historia noworocznika literackiego „Pokłosie”, wydawanego w latach 1852-1861 w Wielkopolsce (Leszno, później Poznań, część Polski należąca do Prus. Grupa ziemian wielkopolskich i księży katolickich z okolic Gostynia stworzyła Instytut Gostyński (szpital i sierociniec.

Full Text Available The genesis prerequisites of the early literary Modernism appear in Vilnius during the last decade of the 19th century when the city encountered the first manifestations of the cultural consciousness of the modern liberal bourgeoisie. The first publicist texts of the independent Russian media (in 1898 the daily Северо-Западное Слово started circulating, and the architectural discourse of the city (the stylistics of Vilnius Land Bank colonies witness the classical liberal ideology of modernisation according to which the rational progress of civilisation harmoniously coincides with the individualistic values. The then still very scarce texts of Vilnius Russian and Polish literature and aesthetics were gradually moving away from the positivism of the 19th century towards the expression of modern individualism, bourgeois privacy, value liberalism, and aesthetic refinement. Vilnius literary texts generously depicted aesthetical interiors as private individual space, cultural shades from the dehumanising effect of technical progress (W. Benjamin. Aesthetical, closed interior turns into a semantically crucial space in the Vilnius novels Dwór w Haliniszkach (1903 and Z miłości (1903 by the Polish writer E. Jeleńska-Dmochowska. The private interior fantasies and the feeling of social isolation are clear features of mentality in novellas by the Vilnius Russian writer Yevgeny Shveder (Наброски и силуэты, 1904. The larger part of the early creative period of Kazys Puida should also be attributed to the melancholic discourse of the private aestheticism (Iš sermėgiaus krūtinės, 1906, Ruduo, 1906. The texts by the above authors sporadically demonstrated stylistic features of Parnassian and Decadent aestheticisms. The first collection of Polish poems published in the 20th century in Vilnius, the book Fale by Stanisława Szadurska (1906 also represented some melancholic features of the salon aesthetics and the classical

Full Text Available After winning the battle against the Turks at Chocim in 1621, Stanisław Lubomirski, the owner of Wiśnicz, founded the monastery of the Discalced Carmelites as a votive offering to God. Religious authorities feared the location of the monastery and church in private estates due to the potential impact of the court on religious life. In 1622 the founder began the construction at full swing, employing great numbers of labourers and prisoners of war. The process of the construction was supervised by Lubomirski’s court architect, an Italian Maciej Trapola. The buildings were characterized by a modern style of architecture and they occupied a unique position in the history of Polish architecture. The property was fortified and also served as defence for the castle of Wiśnicz. On May 26, 1630 a ceremony was held to introduce the Carmelites to the monastery in Wiśnicz. The construction works were completed in 1635. The interior was very well equipped and, in the seventeenth century, was considered one of the best equipped Discalced Carmelite monasteries. On September 1, 1650 the Swedes captured the castle and monastery destroying, looting and pillaging the most precious things including the library and the works of art. The monastery in Wiśnicz after the partition of Poland was incorporated into Austria. Emperor Joseph II through his policies led to the suppression of monasteries, including the monastery in Wiśnicz. He robbed the monastery, took away the monastic treasury and allocated the church estates to religious funds. The most valuable works of art were taken to Vienna (two wagons of paintings. The buildings of the monastery were converted to perform the functions of a prison, criminal court and housing for judges. After regaining independence in 1918, despite the protests of the Carmelites, the prison in the monastery continued to function. In September 1939, the Germans used it as a camp for prisoners of war and later a concentration

Full Text Available In Białowieża Primeval Forest, in 1823 Stanisław Górski discovered on the Cisovka Hag, a relic population of European silver-fir (Abies alba Mill.. This population is isolated and most away, 120 km to the North-East, from the border of European-silver-fir distribution. Besides the natural population Cisovka, there are also man-made silver fir stands and clumps in the Polish and Belorussian part of Białowieża Primeval Forest. In the Polish part there are four such artificial stands. If the seed-producing silver-fir stands really originated from the Cisovka population, then they are a very valuable part of the declining population and an easy accessible seed source. However, if these populations were introduced to the Białowieża Primeval Forest, then they are a potential source of dangerous genetic pollution of the Cisovka population. The relationship of the genetic structure of the Cisovka population to man-made silver-fir-stands in Białowieża Forest was investigated with the help of 17 loci of 1 1 enzyme systems. Genetic diversity of Cisovka population is characterized by the smallest mean number of alleles per locus (Mal= 1.353, includes all loci studied and per polimorphic locus Malp = 2.00. In Cisovka population there is very low-grade of polimorphic loci (Pp = 11.765 with the mean 37.255 for all studied populations. Expected heterozygosity, He = 0.079 revealed very low-grade of genetic diversity in the population. The observed heterozygosity (Ho = 0.123 was similar to this characterictic in other populations. A dendrogram based on Neis genetic distance coefficient (D among 9 silver-fir populations was constructed. Cisovka in the UPGMA dendrogram is a distinct population separated from other ones by a very great genetic distance (D = 0.06. Also two man-made silver-fir (B I and 132 stands are separated from others. Only populations B3 and B4 are combined into one subgroup linked to the population Tomaszów Lubelski. Basing on the

Z kolei u drugiego pacjenta w przebiegu świeżego zakażenia M. pneumoniae i w obecności innych czynników ryzyka doszło do rozwoju masywnej zakrzepicy żył głębokich.

Dysfunkcja procesów termoregulacji prowadzi do skrajnego wzrostu temperatury ciała i w następstwie do uszkodzenia wieloukładowego, niewydolności narządów i niekiedy śmierci. Największe ryzyko wystąpienia UC występuje u dzieci i osób w podeszłym wieku.

    2010-11-01

Rozkład podaży energii pozabiałkowej powinien wynosić 60-65% z węglowodanów i 35-40% z tłuszczu. Należy zadbać o stopniowe wzbogacanie diety o kwasy tłuszczowe (NNKT, zawarte w olejach roślinnych, tłustych rybach morskich, orzechach oraz zielonych warzywach. Do 2. roku życia zalecana jest dieta bogata w tłuszcze, głównie pochodzące z masła, następnie należy stopniowo ograniczać tłuszcze zwierzęce, aby uniknąć otyłości.

Zwiększanie lesistości i prawidłowa gospodarka leśna należy do najbardziej efektywnych sposobów kompensowania

Full Text Available The beginning of 2006 marked two decades since the death of Stana Djurić-Klajn, the first historian of Serbian musical literature. This is the exterior motive for presenting a summary of the state and results of up-to-date musicology research into Serbian musical criticism and essay writings during the XIXth and the first half of the XXth century, alongside the many works dedicated to this branch of national musical history, recently published. In this way the reader is given a detailed background of these studies – mainly the authors' names, books, studies, articles, as well as the problems of this branch of Serbian musicology. The first research is associated with the early years of the XXth century, that is, to the work of bibliography. The pioneer of Serbian ethnomusicology, Vladimir R. Djordjević composed An Essay of the Serbian Musical Bibliography until 1914, noting selected XIXth century examples of Serbian literature on music. Bibliographic research was continued by various institutions and experts during the second half of the XXth century: in Zagreb (today Republic of Croatia; the Yugoslav Institute for Lexicography, Novi Sad (Matica srpska; and Belgrade (Institute for Literature and Art, Slobodan Turlakov, Ljubica Djordjević, Staniša Vojinović etc. In spite of the efforts of these institutions and individuals, a complete analytic bibliography of music in Serbian print of the last two centuries has unfortunately still not been made. The most important contributions to historical research, interpretation and validation of Serbian musical criticism and essay writings were given by Stana Djurić-Klajn, Dr Roksanda Pejović and Dr Slobodan Turlakov. Professor Stana Djurić-Klajn was the first Serbian musicologist to work in this field of Serbian music history. She wrote a significant number of studies and articles dedicated to Serbian musical writers and published their selected readings. Prof. Klajn is the author and editor of the

    Ryszard Handke

    2015-07-01

Full Text Available Science-Fiction Novel Liberates Itself from Political Dues The present issue of "Colloquia Humanistica" contains Professor Ryszard Handke's two last essays, until now unpublished. It also results from the applied technique

Psychological barriers in delivering first help for child

Full Text Available Since its very beginning, the life of the Mariavite community focused around parishes and churches. It was the parishes that satisfied the religious needs of their members but also performed social functions related to education, culture, and welfare issues. Before, as well as during. World War I, the Mariavite Church was one of the largest religious communities in Łódź. Mariavite parishes in Łódź were established several years before World War I, in the period when Mariavite parishes, independent from the Roman Catholic Church, were organised. The first Mariavite church was built in December 1906, the next in September 1907, and the third and the last after a year, in September 1908. Apart from churches and chapels erected with exceptional speed, institutions for adult parish members and their children were also established, such as libraries, reading rooms, classrooms for girls and boys, schools, shelters, and flats for poor families. They were supposed to serve Mariavite Church members. Directly after the outbreak of the World War I, Łódź Mariavite clergy joined aid campaigns organized in parishes. Food was provided for adults and children on a larger scale; meals were prepared and served in Mariavite parochial kitchens. In that period, care and education institutions for children continued to perform their tasks; however, they intensified their activities aimed at providing meals, clothes, and shoes. The overriding task of Mariavite shelters included care, religious and moral education, and helping children of pre-school age (3–7. Aid was provided to children from poor families of factory workers and craftsmen.

Materiał i metody: W pracy wykorzystano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego z wykorzystanie dwóch narzędzi: autorskiego kwestionariusza ankiety oraz standaryzowanego narzędzia badawczego-Listy Kryteriów Zdrowia. In 1775-1783, Jean-Emmanuel Gilibert (1741-1814) stayed in Respublica Poloniae to oranize a veterinary school, the Royal Botanic Garden and the Royal School of Physicians in Grodno, and since 1781 he worked in Vilnius as Professor of Natural History at the Principal School of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Little is known about his work conducted in Lithuania in the field of geology and earth sciences. The author has decided, on the basis of Gilibert's publications and analysis of the literature (works of J. Garbowska and P. Daszkiewicz and others), to present his teaching and research activities in this field. In Grodno, Gilibert looked after and multiplied the collections of the natural history cabinet at the Royal School of Physicians, renowned for its rich mineralogical and fossil collections watched and admired by, among others, King Stanisław August, J. Bernoulli (1744-1807) and M. Patrin (1742-1815) who mentions the amber rosary with a different species of insects preserved in each bead. Gilibert's tours around Lithuania were the opportunity to enlarge the geological collections and to adapt them to the needs of the school. He also appreciated the importance of ordinary specimens representing the geology of the area. These specimens not only enriched the natural history cabinet, but also defined the way of working and collecting. Ha was the first to found and gather fossil animals from near Grodno. The signs of mineralogical and geological interests of Gilibert can be found in the works of other authors of that epoch (L. Viteta (1736-1809) and J. Bernoulli). In Vilnius, Gilibert conducted a one year-long full lecture on natural history (zoology, botany and mineralogy). In his lectures on mineralogy, he presented not only the systematics, but also emphasized the usefulness of minerals in medicine, for the production of ornamental items and in different sectors of the economy. He adapted the process of teaching to the needs of practical life, based on

with the stress-relief effects in field. Uwzględniając niejednorodność skał i wykorzystując dane geologiczne i o obecności gazów w kopalni Pindingshan 5, opracowano model numeryczny pękania skał w układzie gaz-ciało stałe w oparciu o analizę układu RFPA-Gaz. Model wykorzystano do symulacji zmian naprężeń, odkształceń stropu i spągu, propagacji pęknięć, przemieszczeń w pokładach zabezpieczonych, zmian w przepuszczalności gazów oraz migracji gazów w trakcie wybierania warstwy zabezpieczającej. Wyniki symulacji odwzorowują zmiany naprężeń, odkształceń stropu i spągu, propagacji pęknięć w trakcie wybierania warstwy ochronnej. Ruchy warstw górotworu scharakteryzowano poprzez analizę trzech stref nadkładu i dwóch stref lezących poniżej: w warstwach nadkładu: strefy zawału, strefy spękań oraz strefy osiadania (przemieszczenia w kierunku pionowym), w warstwach leżących poniżej: strefy odkształcenia i pękania spągu, oraz strefy odkształceń elastyczno- plastycznych w kierunku pionowym.

Jedno z kluczowych twierdzeń książki dotyczy zniekształcenia znaczenia pojęcia „liberalizm” przez polskie elity intelektualne i polityczne poprzez połączenie go wyłącznie z wolnym rynkiem zamiast z oryginalną ideą wolności jednostki.
