A widely agreed-upon feature of spoken word recognition is that multiple lexical candidates in memory are simultaneously activated in parallel when a listener hears a word, and that those candidates compete for recognition (Luce, Goldinger, Auer, & Vitevitch, Perception 62:615-625, 2000; Luce & Pisoni, Ear and Hearing 19:1-36, 1998; McClelland & Elman, Cognitive Psychology 18:1-86, 1986). Because the presence of those competitors influences word recognition, much research has sought to quantify the processes of lexical competition. Metrics that quantify lexical competition continuously are more effective predictors of auditory and visual (lipread) spoken word recognition than are the categorical metrics traditionally used (Feld & Sommers, Speech Communication 53:220-228, 2011; Strand & Sommers, Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 130:1663-1672, 2011). A limitation of the continuous metrics is that they are somewhat computationally cumbersome and require access to existing speech databases. This article describes the Phi-square Lexical Competition Database (Phi-Lex): an online, searchable database that provides access to multiple metrics of auditory and visual (lipread) lexical competition for English words, available at www.juliastrand.com/phi-lex .

The critical resolved shear stress and strain rate sensitivity of vanadium were determined for vanadium-nitrogen alloys over the temperature range of 77K to 400K for concentrations of 1 to 500 wt ppm nitrogen. The concentration dependence of the hardening rate agrees quite well with either the Fleischer or Labusch strengthening model but the combined temperature and concentration dependence follows more closely the form predicted by Ono and Sommer. The strain rate sensitivity exhibits a peak at 140K which decreases with increasing nitrogen content but above 250K there is a reversal in this effect. (orig.) [de

Full Text Available Model analysis provides a mechanism for representing student learning as measured by standard multiple-choice surveys. The model plot contains information regarding both how likely students in a particular class are to choose the correct answer and how likely they are to choose an answer consistent with a well-documented conceptual model. Unfortunately, Bao’s original presentation of the model plot did not include a way to represent uncertainty in these measurements. I present details of a method to add error bars to model plots by expanding the work of Sommer and Lindell. I also provide a template for generating model plots with error bars.

Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry was used to analyze the elemental content of neurofibrillary tangle (NFT)-bearing and NFT-free neurons within the Sommer's sector (H1 region) of the hippocampus in Guamanian Chamorros with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and parkinsonism-dementia and in neurologically normal controls. Preliminary data indicate prominent accumulation of aluminum within the nuclear region and perikaryal cytoplasm of NFT-bearing hippocampal neurons, regardless of the underlying neurological diagnosis. These findings further extend the association between intraneuronal aluminum and NFT formation and support the hypothesis that environmental factors are related to the neurodegenerative changes seen in the Chamorro population

Covalent posttranslational modification with SUMO (small ubiquitin-related modifier) modulates functions of a wide range of proteins in eukaryotic cells. Sumoylation affects the activity, interaction properties, subcellular localization and the stability of its substrate proteins. The recent discovery of a novel class of ubiquitin ligases (E3), termed ULS (E3-S) or STUbL, that recognize sumoylated proteins, links SUMO modification to the ubiquitin/proteasome system. Here we review recent insights into the properties and function of these ligases and their roles in regulating sumoylated proteins. Für die Allgemeinbildenden Höheren Schulen ("Gymnasien") soll diese neue Regelung ab dem Schuljahr 2013/14 gelten, für die Berufsbildenden Höheren Schulen (u. a. höhere technische oder kaufmännische Schulen mit Abitur) ab dem Schuljahr 2014/15.

We study ensembles of Rydberg atoms in a confined electromagnetic environment such as is provided by a microwave cavity. The competition between standard free space Ising type and cavity-mediated interactions leads to the emergence of different regimes where the particle‑particle couplings range from the typical van der Waals r ‑6 behavior to r ‑3 and to r-independence. We apply a Ramsey spectroscopic technique to map the two-body interactions into a characteristic signal such as intensity and contrast decay curves. Nucleon mass and sigma term from lattice QCD with two light fermion flavors

We analyze N{sub f}=2 nucleon mass data with respect to their dependence on the pion mass down to m{sub {pi}}=157 MeV and compare it with predictions from covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (BChPT). A novel feature of our approach is that we fit the nucleon mass data simultaneously with the directly obtained pion-nucleon {sigma}-term. Our lattice data below m{sub {pi}}=435 MeV is well described by O(p{sup 4}) BChPT and we find {sigma} 37(8)(6)MeV for the {sigma}-term at the physical point. Using the nucleon mass to set the scale we obtain a Sommer parameter of r{sub 0}=0.501(10)(11) fm. (orig.)

Full Text Available This paper focuses on the description of China in leading German daily and weekly newspapers during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. On the basis of a brief outline of the main China narratives in German media since the 1950s, this paper analyses China-related articles which were published during the period August 8-15, 2008. It argues that reports on China are mostly based on well established German notions of China and centre around the image of a despotic and/or dangerous China. Therefore, they primarily refer back to the source culture and contain little information of value regarding the target culture. According to the "classic" toposequence approach soil's properties are closely related to the position of a soil along a slope. The positional differences in soil properties are usually attributed to spatial differences in runoff; erosion and deposition processes. These processes reflect long term effects of the spatial redistribution of water, solids and soluble materials, which are of great importance in respect of nutrient cycling on the landscape scale, and the structuring of natural ecosystems. The "classic" toposequence approach has been seriously questioned by Sommer and Schlichting (1997). They were followed by many scientists of various disciplines (hydrology, ecology, paleopedology, paleoclimate etc). The present study covers three topo-sequences, located in southern Israel, along an average annual rainfall gradient of 90-300 mm. The classic toposequence approach does not apply to none of them, and the controlling factors vary from one site to another.

Full Text Available ABSTRACTThe globalization era has given many changes in some aspects of life such as women participation in work field. There are women can perform their potential ability in doing their work. The effects of doing their role, women oftentimes feel weary not only physical but also mental and emotional therefore it can influence their work performance and personal life. This condition is called by “burnout”. Burnout is influenced by individual, environment and cultural factor. Based on that problem, the researcher is interested to find out some factors that influence burnout for working women in Banyumas Regency. This research is quantitative by descriptive analysis design and the sample is chosen by simple random sampling. The relationship between characteristic of respondent demography and burn out was analyzed by Chi-Square and Sommers d test. The result of analysis are 55% respond are mild burnout and 42,5% are moderate burnout. Level of education, kind of work, amount of income and work duration are some factors that influence burnout for working women in Banyumas Regency. Based on that fact, it is needed some efforts to prevent sustainable burnout.   ABSTRAKEra globalisasi telah memberikan banyak perubahan dalam berbagai aspek kehidupan, termasuk  partisipasi wanita dalam lapangan pekerjaan. Tidak sedikit  wanita yang mampu menunjukkan potensinya dalam menjalankan peran diberbagai bidang keahliannya. After a lengthy test phase the first version of EED is scheduled to be released in summer/fall 1996. The code, which was developed in collaboration between Lund Institute of Technology (Sweden) and Giessen University (Germany), allows fast and reliable sizing of borehole heat exchangers. The temperature in the heat carrier fluid during the seasons can be calculated for various configurations. This paper shows the idea and structure of EED with practical examples. (orig.) Study of the compatibility and competitiveness of sterile males in the framework of the struggle by the sterile insect technique against the Ceratitis

We evaluated under semi-natural field-cage conditions sexual compatibility and competitivity of laboratory strain (Genetic Sexing Strain GSS) ''Vienna 8''. The GSS strain is produced under mass (rearing conditions at the facility of production of sterile males at Sidi Thabat. Wild flies were obtained from infested Sommer oranges. Twenty-five wild males, 25 wild females and 25 GSS were released into cage and mating pairs collected. The determination of indices such as the Isolation Index (ISI), the Male Relative Index (MRPI), the Stalker Index (I) and the Relative Sterile Index (RSI) shows that there is no compatibility and competitiveness between the two strains with a tendency to behaviour of sexual isolation. Sterile male tests dissection irradiated at the dose of (0 Gy, 110 Gy, 120 Gy, 130 Gy and 145 Gy) and correspondent female spermatic show the important damage of the irradiation on the cells but decrease the quality of the sterile male (mating duration, sperm transfer.). The nucleon mass and pion-nucleon sigma term from a chiral analysis of Nf = 2 lattice QCD world data

Full Text Available We investigate the pion-mass dependence of the nucleon mass within the covariant SU(2 baryon chiral perturbation theory up to order p4 with and without explicit Δ (1232 degrees of freedom. We fit lattice QCD data from several collaborations for 2 and 2+1 flavor ensembles. Here, we emphasize our Nf = 2 study where the inclusion the Δ (1232 contributions stabilizes the fits. We correct for finite volume and spacing effects, set independently the lattice QCD scale by a Sommer-scale of r0 = 0.493(23 fm and also include one σπN lQCD data point at Mπ ≈ 290 MeV. We obtain low-energy constants of natural size which are compatible with the rather linear pion-mass dependence observed in lattice QCD. We report a value of σπN = 41(5(4 MeV for the 2 flavor case and σπN = 52(3(8 MeV for 2+1 flavors.

The solar-assisted district heating in the Technology and Industrial Park SOLARIS is currently being built. The seasonal heat storage is a gravel-water tank with a volume of 8,000 cubic metre and has already been completed. The expectations have been met with respect to using a simple technology for the construction of seasonal storage and reducing costs. The initial operation is scheduled for summer 1998. Afterwards a two-year measuring programme will control and evaluate the function of the solar-assisted district heating system. (orig.) Christina Hoff Sommers and Sally Satel, a philosopher and a psychiatrist, now both policy analysts at the American Enterprise Institute, write in their recent book One Nation Under Therapy: How the Helping Culture Is Eroding Self-Reliance that empirically unsupported psychological theories ultimately descended from the cultural upheavals of the 1960s have slowly wormed their way into the educational and social scientific mainstream. These theories, the authors argue, promote a view of the human person as someone who is ‘too fragile for this world’, and in need of ceaseless counseling and coddling from the cradle to the grave. The case the authors make for their thesis is, I argue, uneven strong in specific cases, but weak and overwrought in many others. In the end, I argue, they misidentify the main cause of the increasing shallowness that, to a growing number of critics, is slowly infesting contemporary social science and education.

Polar summer mesopause is the coldest region of Earth's atmosphere with temperatures as low as minus 130 C. In this extreme environment ice aerosol layers have appeared. Larger aerosols can be seen from the ground as clouds known as NLC (Noctilucent clouds). Ice aerosols from sub-visible range give rise to the phenomena known as Polar Mesosphere Sommer Echo (PMSE). For efficient scattering, electron number density must be structured at the radar half wavelength (Bragg condition). The general requirement to allow for the observation of structures at VHF and higher frequencies is that the dust size (and charge number) must be large enough to extend the convective-diffusive subrange of the energy spectrum of electrons (by reducing their diffusivity) to the wavelength which is shorter than the Bragg-scale of the probing radar. In this paper we present main results of ice particles measurements inside the PMSE layers obtained from in situ rocket soundings and newly developed radar techniques.

The program for energy economy settled by the Swedish Parliament 1981 stated some objectives for energy savings in the existing settlement as well as for the conversion from oil to alternative sources of energy. One object for savings in housing is that the annual consumption has to be reduced by 25% under a decade. Due to difficulties to follow up with existing statistics the developing energy consumption in housing concerning the total consumption as well as to proportion to different kind of energy sources, the National Swedish Institute for Building Researcch together with some technical senior high schools has started a project to improve the possibilities for following up the level of energy consumption and its changes with a better precision than at moment. The project started with an investigation, fall 1982 to sommer 1983 comprising approx. 300 random sample houses from 24 municipals. In the report, a summary of the project and the introductory investigation is given showing how the investigation is done.

Solar energy can be used in buildings via use of transparent insulations. But thereby problems occur, like overheating of building walls in summer and heat losses in the cold season. To solve these problems ZAE Bayern has designed and optimized the switchable insulation SWD, the thermal conductivity of which can be changed from highly insulating to conducting. A computer routine was developed to calculate and to optimize the heat gains. The SWD is switched by desorbing/adsorbing as small amount of hydrogen gas. Desorption is facilitated with an electric heating element. The thermal conductivity of the filling can be varied by about a factor of 40. Several SWD-modules were produced and installed in an outside measuring facility. The heat gains and the durability were investigated for three years. The results of the simulation could be verified and ageing did not occur. For an optimal system the heat gains are in the range of 150 kWh/(m{sup 2}a). The mounting of these panels at south facades is simple, especially for post bolt systems. Contrary to transparent systems the loss of heat in winter is very small and the overheating of the walls behind the SWD in summer can be avoided. (orig.) Background: ATES is application is growing Application of seasonal Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) contributes to energy saving and Greenhouse Gas (GHG)-reduction goals (CBS, 2015; EU, 2010, 2014). Recently it was shown that ATES is applicable in several parts of the world (Bloemendal et al., 2015). While in most parts of the world adoption is just beginning, in the Netherlands progressive building energy efficiency regulation already caused the adoption of ATES to take off (Heekeren and Bakema, 2015; Sommer et al., 2015). As a result of the large number of ATES systems in the Netherlands, the subsurface plays a crucial role in the energy saving objectives of The Netherlands (Kamp, 2015; SER, 2013). Problem: suboptimal use of the subsurface for energy storage ATES systems accumulate in urban areas, as can be expected with a large growth of ATES systems; at many locations in Dutch cities demand for ATES transcends the available space in the subsurface (Li, 2014; Sommer et al., 2015). Within in the Dutch legal framework and state of technology optimal use of the subsurface is not secured; i.e. minimizing the total GHG emissions in a certain area. (Bloemendal et al., 2014; Li, 2014). The most important aspects in this problem are A) the permanent and often unused claim resulting from static permits and B) excessive safety zones around wells to prevent interaction. Both aspects result in an artificial reduction of subsurface space for potential new ATES systems. Recent research has shown that ground energy storage systems could be placed much closer to each other (Bakr et al., 2013; Sommer et al., 2015), and a controlled/limited degree of interaction between them can actually benefit the overall energy savings of an entire area. There are two main aspects in the development of new glazing. On the one hand, windows with extremely low thermal conductivity are wanted. On the other hand, solar irradiation should contribute to thermal gains during the heating season. A large number of different coatings and window systems is suited for many different applications. In particular for the prevention of overheating in the summer, there is a huge interest in glazing regulating the irradiation itself without additional mechanical devices. Full Text Available After referring briefly to the fantasies regarding the origins of Christianity as elicited by the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 (Dupont-Sommer, Allegro, Thiering, the purpose of the contribution is to put the Jesus movement into relief in the context of first-century Judaism. The identity of the Qumranites is argued to be Essene scribes. The identity, ideology and practices of the latter are compared with those of Jesus of Nazareth and the movement he elicited using the following rubrics: (1 Jesus, the teacher of righteousness and the powers that be; (2 asceticism versus itinerary charismaticism; (3 caring versus lack of caring for the sick, poor and marginalised; (4 elitist priests and scribes versus lower-class peasants; (5 the interpretation of the law; (6 religious and daily practices (baptism, ritual meal, sacrifice, prayer, community of possessions, scribal activity; (7 religious views or ideology (kingdom of God, the new covenant, light and darkness, politics. The result is a picture of Jesus (with his focus on human suffering in sharp relief versus Qumran and facets of the early church.

Due to their efficient heat insulation, modern low-energy houses can develop disagreeably high room temperatures in the summer. Use of room cooling devices for cooling residential buildings in central Europe is not feasible for ecological as well as economic reasons. This paper presents the buried heat exchanger and the cellar wall exchanger as alternatives to the cooling of incoming air in ventilated low-energy residential buildings. Both are in principle cold storages with coiled pipes taking in air from outside. The buried heat exchanger is charged with cold during the heating period (seasonal storage), whereas the cellar wall exchanger accumulates and gives off cold daily. (orig.) Food intake of grazing reindeer in Adventdalen was estimated from fecal production. Differences in physiology, need of concomitant medications, and liability for cognitive deficits in this population, make the choice of anticonvulsant drugs especially important. This paper reviews topiramate (TPM, a treatment for many types of seizures, with the above risks in mind. In particular, we discuss efficacy and pharmacokinetics with emphasis on the older patient, and adverse events in both the younger and older adult. With most studies of TPM-induced cognitive deficits having been performed in younger adults and volunteers, we discuss the implications for the older adult. Even in studies of younger individuals, up to 50% discontinue TPM because of intolerable cognitive deficits. Most studies find specific declines in working memory and verbal fluency. In conclusion, we give recommendations for use of this antiepileptic drug in this population.Keywords: topiramate, elderly, epilepsy, treatment, cognition, pharmacokinetics

Heavy metals content in degraded agricultural soils of a mountain region related to soil properties

Agriculture has been practiced for long time in Mediterranean regions. Intensive agriculture and irrigation have developed mainly in the valleys and coastal areas. In the mountainous areas, dry farming has been practiced for centuries. Soils have been fertilized using mainly organic amendments. Plants extracted nutrients and other elements like heavy metals presented in soils and agricultural practices modified soil properties that could favor the presence of heavy metals. In this work, it has been checked the content of heavy metals in 100 agricultural soils samples of the NorthWest area of the province of Alicante (Spain) which has been long cultivated with cereals and olive trees, and now soils are abandoned and degraded because of the low agricultural yields. European policy has the aim to improve the sustainable agriculture and recover landscapes of mountain regions. So that, it is important to check the state of the soils (Marques et al. 2007). Soils samples (arable layer) were analyzed determining: pH (1:5, w/v, water extract), equivalent calcium carbonate content, organic matter by Walkley-Black method (Nelson and Sommers 1996), micronutrients (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) extracted with DTPA (Lindsay and Norvell, 1978) and measured by atomic absorption spectrometry, and total content of metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb) measured in soil samples after microwave acid digestion (Moral et al. 1996), quantifying the content of metals by ICP analysis. The correlation between soil properties and metals. The results indicated that pH and carbonates are the most important properties of these soils correlated with the metals (both micronutrients and heavy metals). The available micronutrients (all of them) are close correlated with the pH and carbonates in soils. Moreover, heavy metals like Pb and Ni are related to available Mn and Zn. Static forces in d=2+1 SU(N) gauge theories

Using a three-level algorithm we perform a high-precision lattice computation of the static force up to 1fm in the 2+1 dimensional SU(5) gauge theory. Discretization errors and the continuum limit are discussed in detail. By comparison with existing SU(2) and SU(3) data it is found that σr 2 0 =1.65-(π)/(24) holds at an accuracy of 1% for all N≥2, where r 0 is the Sommer reference scale. The effective central charge c(r) is obtained and an intermediate distance r s is defined via the property c(r s )=(π)/(24). It separates in a natural way the short-distance regime governed by perturbation theory from the long-distance regime described by an effective string theory. The ratio τ s /τ 0 decreases significantly from SU(2) to SU(3) to SU(5), where r s 0 . We give a preliminary estimate of its value in the large-N limit. The static force in the smallest representation of N-ality 2, which tends to the k=2 string tension as r→∞, is also computed up to 0.7 fm. The deviation from Casimir scaling is positive and grows from 0.1% to 1% in that range. (Orig.)

Measurements of flux and isotopic composition of soil carbon dioxide

The flux and isotope composition of soil CO 2 has been regularly measured at three sites located in the southern Poland, during the time period: January 1998 - October 2000. They represent typical ecosystems appearing in central Europe: (i) mixed forest; (ii) cultivated agricultural field; (iii) grassland. To monitor the flux and isotopic composition of soil CO 2 , a method based on the inverted cup principle was adopted. The flux of soil CO 2 reveals distinct seasonal fluctuations, with maximum values up to ca. 25 mmol/m 2 /h during sommer months and around ten times lower values during winter time. Also significant differences among the monitored sites were detected, the flux density of this gas being highest for the mixed forest site and ca. two times lower for the cultivated grassland. Carbon-13 content of the soil CO 2 reveals little seasonal variability, with δ 13 C values essentially reflecting the isotopic composition of the soil organic matter and the vegetation type. The carbon-14 content of soil CO 2 flux also reveals slight seasonality, with lower δ 14 C values recorded during winter time. Significantly lower δ 14 C values recorded during winter time. Effects of short-range order on electronic properties of Zr-Ni glasses as seen from low-temperature specific heat

Measurements of the low-temperature specific heat Cp of liquid-quenched Zr-Ni glasses for a large number of compositions in the range from 55 to 74 at.% Zr revealed an unusual composition dependence of the density of states at the Fermi level, N(EF). Furthermore, for some compositions the variation of Cp near the superconducting transition temperature Tc indicated the presence of two superconducting phases, i.e., two superconducting transitions were detected. Comparison of the individual Tc's in phase-separated samples to the composition dependence of Tc for all of the samples suggests that amorphous phases with compositions near 60 and 66.7 at.% Zr occur. We discuss these results in terms of an "association model" for liquid alloys (due to Sommer), in which associations of unlike atoms with definite stoichiometries are assumed to exist in equilibrium with unassociated atoms. We conclude that in the composition range studied, associate clusters with the compositions Zr3Ni2 and Zr2Ni occur. In only a few cases are the clusters sufficiently large, compared with the superconducting coherence length, for separate superconducting transitions to be observed. The variation of N(EF) with composition is discussed, as well as the effects of this chemical short-range ordering on the crystallization behavior and glass-forming tendency.

Patterns of allozyme variation in diploid and tetraploid Centaurea jacea at different spatial scales.

The extent and spatial patterns of genetic variation at allozyme markers were investigated within and between diploid and autotetraploid knapweeds (Centaurea jacea L. sensu lato, Asteraceae) at contrasted geographic scales: (1) among populations sampled from a diploid-tetraploid contact zone in the northeastern part of the Belgian Ardennes, and (2) within mixed populations from that zone where diploids and tetraploids coexist. Our data were also compared with a published dataset by Sommer (1990) describing allozyme variation in separate diploid and tetraploid knapweeds populations collected throughout Europe. Genetic diversity was higher in tetraploids. In the Belgian Ardennes and within the mixed populations, both cytotypes had similar levels of spatial genetic structure, they were genetically differentiated, and their distributions of allele frequencies were not spatially correlated. In contrast, at the European scale, diploids and tetraploids did not show differentiated gene pools and presented a strong correlation between their patterns of spatial genetic variation. Numerical simulations showed that the striking difference in patterns observed at small and large geographic scales could be accounted for by a combination of (1) isolation by distance within cytotypes; and (2) partial reproductive barriers between cytotypes and/or recurrent formation of tetraploids. We suggest that this may explain the difficulty of the taxonomic treatment of knapweeds and of polyploid complexes in general.

Die insgesamt elf Aufsätze von Pädagoginnen, Theologinnen und Politikwissenschaftlerinnen, darunter ein aus dem Italienischen übersetzter Grundlagentext von Anna Maria Piussi, leisten einen wichtigen Beitrag zur „kulturellen Übersetzung“ des italienischen Differenzansatzes in die deutschsprachige politische und vor allem pädagogische Praxis.The collection, edited by the Freiburg philosopher and theologian Andrea Günter, grew out of a German-Italian conference on the central questions in pedagogy that took place at the Evangelical Academy Arnoldshain in the summer of 2003. The common focus was established by the participants’ shared influence by the work done in political education in the philosopher community Diotima in Verona. The eleven essays by pedagogues, theologians, and political scientists, among them a fundamental text by Anna Maria Piussi translated from the Italian, make an important contribution to “cultural translation” of the Italian approach to difference into the political and especially pedagogical praxis of the German-speaking world.

The Mittelplate oil field is located 7 km offshore the town of Friedrichskoog. Reserves are estimated at 30 million tonnes of oil. At a production rate of 2,500 t/d, it will last about 33 years. The transport capacity of the offshore platform is limited, so that attempts were made to enhance production by constructing the extended reach borehole Dieksand 2. Details are presented. (orig.) [Deutsch] Das Erdoelfeld Mittelplate liegt am suedlichen Rand des Nationalparks Schleswig Holsteinisches Wattenmeer, ca. 7000 m westlich der Ortschaft Friedrichskoog. Die gewinnbaren Reserven betragen ca. 30 Millionen t Oel. Bei einer Foerderkapazitaet von 2.500 t/Tag betraegt die Foerderdauer ca. 33 Jahre. Aufgrund der begrenzten Transportkapazitaeten von der Insel, laesst sich durch zusaetzliche Bohrungen von der kuenstlichen Insel Mittelplate keine entscheidende Erhoehung der Foerderkapazitaet erzielen. Ab Sommer 1996 wurde erstmals die Moeglichkeit der Lagerstaettenerschliessung von Land untersucht. Ein im Mai 1997 in Hamburg etabliertes Drilling Team wurde mit der Aufgabe betraut, die Extended Reach Bohrung Dieksand 2 zu planen und abzuteufen. Die Planungsphasen fuer die Extended Reach Bohrung Dieksand 2 wurden aufgezeigt. Die fuer den Erfolg einer Extended Reach Bohrung wichtigen Planungsparameter wurden erlaeutert. Es wurden Wege gezeigt, wie bei diesem Projekt technische und geologische Risiken in der Planung mit beruecksichtigt und nach Beginn der Bohrung weiter bearbeitet werden koennen. (orig.)

One of the most promising candidates to describe the physics beyond the standard model is the so-called supersymmetry. This work was created in the context of the DESY-Muenster-Collaboration, which studies in particular the N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM). SYM is a comparatively simple theory, which is therefore well-suited to study the expected properties of a supersymmetric theory with the help of Monte Carlo simulations on the lattice. This thesis is focused on the numerical determination of the quarkpotential, the glueball masses and the phase structur of the N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The quarkpotential is used to calculate the Sommer scale, which in turn is needed to convert the dimensionless lattice spacing into physical units. Glueballs are hypothetical particles built out of gluons, their masses are relatively hard to determine in lattice simulations due to their pure gluonic nature. For this reason, various methods are studied to reduce the uncertainties of the mass determination. The focus lies on smearing methods and their use in variational smearing as well as on the use of different glueball operators. Lastly, a first look is taken at the phase diagram of the model at finite temperature. Various simulations have been performed at finite temperature in parallel to those performed at temperature zero to analyse the behaviour of the Polyakov loop and the gluino condensate in greater detail.

Based on the continuous stationary measurements of climate carried out since the summer of 1992 at various sites in the Leipzig area and for mobile air temperature and humidity measurements carried out for in situ weather in the city area at selected test areas, relationships were carried out between urban structures for using areas and climatic conditions of the air layer near the ground in the city of Leipzig region. The data on the sealing of the functional types of structures obtained in the context of a further part project were used as an important indicator for the use of areas. A basic precondition for these city climate investigations is the preparation of the extensive data obtained in the form of tables and graphs. This is the first comprehensive book on motor car driving, i.e. all aspects of motor car technology that cannot be looked at separately from the needs, characteristics and limitations of the human driver. This includes ergonomics as well as the design of the driver interface in consideration of the findings of cognitive science, problems of driving simulation in the context of simulation of technical systems, problems relating to optimal car automation up to traffic psychology. The book is in honour of Prof. Dr. Willumeit who died in summer 2000. Effects of short-range order on electronic properties of Zr-Ni glasses as seen from low-temperature specific heat

Measurements of the low-temperature specific heat C/sub p/ of liquid-quenched Zr-Ni glasses for a large number of compositions in the range from 55 to 74 at. % Zr revealed an unusual composition dependence of the density of states at the Fermi level, N(E/sub F/). Furthermore, for some compositions the variation of C/sub p/ near the superconducting transition temperature T/sub c/ indicated the presence of two superconducting phases, i.e., two superconducting transitions were detected. Comparison of the individual T/sub c/'s in phase-separated samples to the composition dependence of T/sub c/ for all of the samples suggests that amorphous phases with compositions near 60 and 66.7 at. % Zr occur. We discuss these results in terms of an ''association model'' for liquid alloys (due to Sommer), in which associations of unlike atoms with definite stoichiometries are assumed to exist in equilibrium with unassociated atoms. We conclude that in the composition range studied, associate clusters with the compositions Zr 3 Ni 2 and Zr 2 Ni occur. In only a few cases are the clusters sufficiently large, compared with the superconducting coherence length, for separate superconducting transitions to be observed. The variation of N(E/sub F/) with composition is discussed, as well as the effects of this chemical short-range ordering on the crystallization behavior and glass-forming tendency

Universal happiness? Cross-cultural measurement invariance of scales assessing positive mental health.

Research into positive aspects of the psyche is growing as psychologists learn more about the protective role of positive processes in the development and course of mental disorders, and about their substantial role in promoting mental health. With increasing globalization, there is strong interest in studies examining positive constructs across cultures. To obtain valid cross-cultural comparisons, measurement invariance for the scales assessing positive constructs has to be established. The current study aims to assess the cross-cultural measurement invariance of questionnaires for 6 positive constructs: Social Support (Fydrich, Sommer, Tydecks, & Brähler, 2009), Happiness (Subjective Happiness Scale; Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999), Life Satisfaction (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985), Positive Mental Health Scale (Lukat, Margraf, Lutz, van der Veld, & Becker, 2016), Optimism (revised Life Orientation Test [LOT-R]; Scheier, Carver, & Bridges, 1994) and Resilience (Schumacher, Leppert, Gunzelmann, Strauss, & Brähler, 2004). Participants included German (n = 4,453), Russian (n = 3,806), and Chinese (n = 12,524) university students. Confirmatory factor analyses and measurement invariance testing demonstrated at least partial strong measurement invariance for all scales except the LOT-R and Subjective Happiness Scale. The latent mean comparisons of the constructs indicated differences between national groups. Potential methodological and cultural explanations for the intergroup differences are discussed. Full Text Available El edificio Positano, proyectado durante la década de 1950 por el arquitecto Luis García Pardo, marca un hito en la arquitectura de la vivienda colectiva moderna en el Uruguay. Para concretar este edificio, el arquitecto -y promotor inmobiliario a la vez- desarrolló una serie de proyectos, identificándose tres proyectos completamente documentados. Esta serie posee un fuerte carácter moderno y experimental, el cual se expresa en la volumetría general, la implantación, en el desarrollo tipológico, el diseño estructural y el diseño de los cerramiento exteriores. El último proyecto, realizado en asociación con el joven arquitecto Adolfo Sommer Smith, comienza a construirse en 1959. La serie de proyectos, evidencia un creciente proceso de “abstracción”, tanto formal como conceptual. Lo cual conducirá por un lado a simplificar formas y reducir elementos, y por otro a diseñar dispositivos de mayor complejidad, capaces de resolver funciones diversas al mismo tiempo. A partir de la búsqueda y clasificación de documentación de época –planos, fotografías, artículos, entre otros–, el presente trabajo intentó ensayar una interpretación proyectual, exponiendo las principales preocupaciones y estrategias de los arquitectos. El ensayo buscó reconocer repeticiones, iteraciones, dudas y certezas de un proceso proyectual intenso, que transitó los bordes de la disciplina.

Beam On Target (BOT) Produces Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) Fireballs and Afterglows

Unlike the myriads of ad hoc models that have been offered to explain GRB, the BOT process is simply the very common process used worldwide in accelerator laboratories to produce gamma rays. The Strong Magnetic Field (SMF) model postulates an extremely intense, highly relativistic current ring formed during the original gravitational collapse of a distant galaxy when the plasma cloud was permeated by a primordial magnetic field. GRB occur when solid matter (asteroid, white dwarf, neutron star, planet) falls rapidly through the Storage Ring beam producing a very strongly collimated electromagnetic shower, and a huge amount of matter from the target, in the form of a giant, hot, expanding plasma cloud, or ``Fireball,'' is blown off. BOT satisfies all the ``severe constraints imposed on the source of this burst --'' concluded by the CGRO team (Sommer et al, Astrophys. J. 422 L63 (1994)) for the huge intense burst GRB930131, whereas neutron star merger models are ``difficult to reconcile.'' BOT expects the lowest energy gamma photons to arrive very slightly later than higher energy photons due to the time for the shower to penetrate the target. The millisecond spikes in bursts are due to the slender filaments of current that make up the Storage Ring beam. Delayed photons can be explained by a broken target ``rock.'' See H. Second International Conference on Near-Field Optical Analysis: Photodynamic Therapy and Photobiology Effects

The International NASA/DARPA Photobiology Conference held at the Johnson Space Center in Houston/TX demonstrated where low level laser therapy (LLLT), respectively low intensity light activated biostimulation (LILAB) and nanotechnological applications employing photobiomodulation techniques will presumably go in the next ten years. The conference was a continuation of the 1st International Conference on Nearfield Optical Analysis organized by Andrei Sommer (ENSOMA Lab, University of Ulm, Germany) in November 2000 at Castle Reisenburg, Germany, which started with a group of ten scientists from eight different countries. The 1st conference was co-sponsored by the American Chemical Society to evaluate the molecular mechanism of accelerated and normal wound healing processes. The 2nd conference was co-sponsored by DARPA, NASA-JSC and the Medical College of Wisconsin. Despite the short time between events, the 2nd conference hosted 40 international experts form universities, research institutes, agencies and the industry. The materials published here are expected to become milestones forming a novel platform in biomedical photobiology. The multidisciplinary group of researchers focused on LLLT/LILAB-applications under extreme conditions expected to have beneficial effects particularly in space, on submarines, and under severe battlefield conditions. The group also focused on novel technologies with possibilities allowing investigating the interaction of light with biological systems, molecular mechanisms of wound healing, bone regeneration, nerve regeneration, pain modulation, as well as biomineralization and biofilm formulation processes induced by nanobacteria.

A comparison of the palatability of flavored oral contrasts.

The aim of this study was to compare the taste of computed tomography (CT) oral contrast diluted with various flavored drinks. We performed a prospective, blinded, controlled trial in healthy adult volunteers. Subjects were assigned to ingest four 250-mL aliquots of oral contrast media diluted in water, Crystal Light Lemonade (Kraft Food, Northfield, Ill), Tropical Punch Kool-Aid (Kraft Food), and Tropicana orange juice (Pepsi Bottling Company, Sommers, NY) in random order; and the taste of the solution was measured with a 100-mm visual analogue scale and 5-point Likert scale from very worst to best. Between-group comparison of the taste scores was performed with repeated-measures analysis of variance and pairwise t tests. The study had 80% power to detect an effect size 0.75 SDs. There were 23 subjects; mean (SD) age was 33 (7.7) and 30% were female. The mean (SD) taste scores were water 12 (5), lemonade 37 (21), Kool-Aid 44 (20), and orange juice 40 (20) (P < .05). The proportion of subjects completely ingesting the contrast in water (65%) was significantly less than that with other 3 study solutions (100% each, P < .001). Dilution of oral contrast media with lemonade, fruit punch, or orange juice is tastier than with water. The choice of the specific juice used to dilute the oral contrast should be individualized based on patient preferences and availability.

Evaluation of the New DIN Standard for Quality Assurance of Diagnostic Displays - Technical Review DIN 6868-157.

Acceptance and regular constancy tests are necessary to ensure the quality of diagnostic displays. In November 2014, a new standard (DIN 6868-157) was published which defines the test procedure and limiting values. There are several substantial changes compared with the previous standard DIN V 6868-57, i. e. considering the complete image display system including workstation and application software instead of only the displays. Since its publication, the new standard has raised many questions. This technical review aims to show the strengths and weaknesses of the new standard. Positive aspects are the introduction of a limiting value for the illuminance and the extension of the interval for constancy tests from 3 to 6 six months. The daily constancy test on the other hand, raises several problems and should be replaced by a randomized test. In addition to the resulting far-reaching economic implications for Western companies, this development has an increasing expiry of the geopolitical influence of Europe and the United States to follow. Furthermore speak climate policy reasons against the end of the export credit financing. Overall, this development, prevents to achieve the widely shared climate policy goals because a lot of new and existing capacities can not be realized on the latest state of the art. Full Text Available Las prácticas docentes son atravesadas por los discursos dominantes en circulación en los espacios de la educación en la contemporaneidad. El artículo tiene como objetivo evidenciar los discursos pedagógicos predominantes entre los profesores cuando se trata de metodologías de enseñanza. Para el estudio, seleccionamos las nociones de discurso pedagógico (Díaz, 1998, discutido a partir de la comprensión de discurso de Michel Foucault. Para obtención de las informaciones, utilizamos cuestionarios contestados por 120 profesores de escuelas públicas y privadas de Santa Catarina y de Rio Grande do Sul, en la región Sur de Brasil. Las informaciones obtenidas muestran que la interdicción de las metodologías centradas en la enseñanza y el predominio de una pedagogía del aprendiente constituyen el discurso pedagógico predominante en la actualidad. Sommer (2005 y Silveira (2005 ya señalaban dicho predominio al estudiar los discursos sobre alfabetización. Sin embargo, no es solo en lo que tange a la alfabetización que tales discursos se fortalecen; también se encuentran en los dichos de los profesores, tales como los de Educación Física y Letras, que actúan en los años iniciales y finales de la Enseñanza Fundamental y Mediana.

Motorheizkraftwerken (MHKW). Als Treibstoff dient verestertes Pflanzenoel (Bio-Diesel). Die MHKW werden entsprechend dem jeweils abgeforderten Strombedarf gefahren. Die bei der Stromerzeugung anfallende Waermeenergie auf dem fuer Heizzwecke guenstigen Temperaturniveau >100 C dient direkt der Waermeversorgung bzw. dem Antrieb einer Kaeltemaschine/Waermepumpe zur Bereitstellung von Niedertemperatur-Kuehlenergie im Sommer und Niedertemperatur-Waerme im Winter. Da der jeweilige Bedarf an Waerme und Strom oftmals nicht gleichlaufend ist, kommt es zeitweise zu einem Ueberschuss des Waermeangebots auf den MHKW und zu anderen Zeiten wiederum zu einer Deckungsluecke. Ueberschuessige MHKW-Abwaerme wird darum in einem Waermespeicher zur Rueckgewinnung und Nutzung bei Heizbedarf im Winter gespeichert. Dazu wird erstmalig ein etwa 300 m tiefer salzfuehrender Aquifer genutzt. Die MHKW-Abwaerme wird auf einem Temperaturniveau von 60... 70 C in diesen Waermespeicher eingeleitet und auf einem Temperaturniveau von 60... 20 C zurueckgewonnen und genutzt. Ein flacher Aquifer-Kaeltespeicher in einer Tiefe von ca. 60 m dient der Gebaeudekuehlung. Die im Winter gespeicherte Umgebungskaelte versorgt im Sommer auf direktem Wege Kaelteabnehmer des Gebaeudes. Beide Speicher sind durch eine ueber 100 m maechtige Tonschicht voneinander getrennt. Der Kuehlungsbedarf bei Luftentfeuchtung auf einem Temperaturniveau von 6/12 C wird ueber eine Kaeltemaschine realisiert, die ebenfalls mit dem Aquifer-Kaltwasser gekuehlt wird. (orig.)

Semantic priming, not repetition priming, is to blame for false hearing.

Contextual and sensory information are combined in speech perception. Conflict between the two can lead to false hearing, defined as a high-confidence misidentification of a spoken word. Rogers, Jacoby, and Sommers (Psychology and Aging, 27(1), 33-45, 2012) found that older adults are more susceptible to false hearing than are young adults, using a combination of semantic priming and repetition priming to create context. In this study, the type of context (repetition vs. sematic priming) responsible for false hearing was examined. Older and young adult participants read and listened to a list of paired associates (e.g., ROW-BOAT) and were told to remember the pairs for a later memory test. Following the memory test, participants identified words masked in noise that were preceded by a cue word in the clear. Targets were semantically associated to the cue (e.g., ROW-BOAT), unrelated to the cue (e.g., JAW-PASS), or phonologically related to a semantic associate of the cue (e.g., ROW-GOAT). How often each cue word and its paired associate were presented prior to the memory test was manipulated (0, 3, or 5 times) to test effects of repetition priming. Results showed repetitions had no effect on rates of context-based listening or false hearing. However, repetition did significantly increase sensory information as a basis for metacognitive judgments in young and older adults. This pattern suggests that semantic priming dominates as the basis for false hearing and highlights context and sensory information operating as qualitatively different bases for listening and metacognition.

Full Text Available In the alimentary tract of Svalbard reindeer concentrations of Fe and Co were higher in winter than in summer, whereas the concentrations of Mn and Cu were equal in both seasons. Zn concentrations were higher in summer throughout the alimentary tract, but Mo were highest only in the distal part. The general pattern of absorption in the alimentary tract seems to correspond to findings in other ruminants. With 570 concrete poles and 80 km of tubes, 100,000 m{sup 3} of ground serve as a cold and heat storage resservoir for a building. The building houses a printing shop, which needs cooling in summer and heating in winter. The energy pole system can be used as a dual system for heating and cooling in both seasons. The project is a pilot project of the BWE (Swiss General Office for Utilities and Power Supply), who also started an extensive accompanying measurig campaign. The results during the first year of operation were very positive, and the performance of the energy pole system was up to expectations. (orig.) Mittels 570 Betonpfaehlen und 80 km Rohrschlangen wird das Erdreich unter dem Gebaeude als ueber 100.000 m{sup 3} grosser Waerme- und Kaeltespeicher genutzt. Ueber dieses Energiepfahlsystem wird dieser Druckereibetrieb mit hohen Anforderungen an das Raumklima und viel Maschinenabwaerme sehr umweltschonend im Winter behizt und im Sommer gekuehlt. Das Besondere an diesem System ist diese ganzjaehrige Doppelnutzung zu Heiz- und Kuehlzwecken. Aus diesem Grunde wurde dieses Projekt vom Bundesamt fuer Energiewirtschaft (BEW) als Pilot- und Demonstrationsprojekt anerkannt. Zur Ueberpruefung von dessen Ausbeute und der Wirksamkeit der gesamten Energietechnik wurde vom BEW ein umfangreiches Messprojekt gestartet. Der Innovationswert der PAGO -Energietechnik liegt allerdings nicht allein im Einsatz der alternativen Komponenten. Mindestens so wichtig ist die Konzeption und die Feinabstimmung der gesamten Energietechnik. Der Betrieb lief im ersten Betriebsjahr sehr positiv und von Anfang an ohne groessere Probleme. Das Energiepfahlsystem konnte im wesentlichen die Erwartungen erfuellen. (orig.)

Emotional arousal enhances memory encoding and consolidation leading to better immediate and delayed memory. Although the central noradrenergic system and the amygdala play critical roles in both effects of emotional arousal, we have recently shown that these effects are at least partly independent of each other, suggesting distinct underlying neural mechanisms. Here we aim to dissociate the neural substrates of both effects in 70 female participants using an emotional memory paradigm to investigate how neural activity, as measured by fMRI, and a polymorphism in the α 2B -noradrenoceptor vary for these effects. To also test whether the immediate and delayed effects of emotional arousal on memory are stable traits, we invited back participants who were a part of a large-scale behavioral memory study ∼3.5 yr ago. We replicated the low correlation of the immediate and delayed emotional enhancement of memory across participants ( r = 0.16) and observed, moreover, that only the delayed effect was, to some degree, stable over time ( r = 0.23). Bilateral amygdala activity, as well as its coupling with the visual cortex and the fusiform gyrus, was related to the preferential encoding of emotional stimuli, which is consistent with affect-biased attention. Moreover, the adrenoceptor genotype modulated the bilateral amygdala activity associated with this effect. The left amygdala and its coupling with the hippocampus was specifically associated with the more efficient consolidation of emotional stimuli, which is consistent with amygdalar modulation of hippocampal consolidation. © 2018 Schümann and Sommer; Published by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press.

On the validity of self-report assessment of cognitive abilities: Attentional control scale associations with cognitive performance, emotional adjustment, and personality.

Individual differences in attentional control involve the ability to voluntarily direct, shift, and sustain attention. In studies of the role of attentional control in emotional adjustment, social relationships, and vulnerability to the effects of stress, self-report questionnaires are commonly used to measure this construct. Yet, convincing evidence of the association between self-report scales and actual cognitive performance has not been demonstrated. Across 2 independent samples, we examined associations between self-reported attentional control (Attentional Control Scale; ACS), self-reported emotional adjustment, Five-Factor Model personality traits (NEO Personality Inventory-Revised) and performance measures of attentional control. Study 1 examined behavioral performance on the Attention Network Test (ANT; Fan, McCandliss, Sommer, Raz, & Posner, 2002) and the Modified Switching Task (MST; Suchy & Kosson, 2006) in a large sample (n = 315) of healthy young adults. Study 2 (n = 78) examined behavioral performance on standardized neuropsychological tests of attention, including Conner's Continuous Performance Test-II and subtests from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales, Third Edition (WAIS-III; Psychological Corporation, 1997) and Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS; Delis, Kaplan, & Kramer, 2001). Results indicated that the ACS was largely unrelated to behavioral performance measures of attentional control but was significantly associated with emotional adjustment, neuroticism, and conscientiousness. These findings suggest that although self-reported attentional control may be a useful construct, researchers using the ACS should exercise caution in interpreting it as a proxy for actual cognitive ability or performance. Due to the Spanish climate (hot summers throughout large parts of the country) the household and small consumers sector in this country has a substantial requirement for cold production. Today most industrial and commercial buildings here such as office blocks, shopping centres, hospitals, hotel etc. are equipped with air conditioning plants. Usually these are based on compression refrigeration plants. Beyond this air conditioning plants are now also beginning to become popular in one-family houses and flats, especially in southern and western Spain and along the Mediterranean coast. In most cases these plants, too, work with compression refrigeration, though it is not uncommon to find steam-based refrigeration systems. Both these types of system are driven by electricity. In the industrial sector, too, the market for refrigeration shows a very wide spectrum across a large variety of branches. Only a few years ago beer and spirits were still the standard drinks for most Germans. Wine is certainly also drunken a lot in west and south Germany but there was nothing like a cool ``Blondes`` (pale beer) together with a ``Kurzer`` (hard liquor) to keep a German man, and even some German women, happy for a while. In Berlin this combination is called a ``Molle`` and a ``Korn`` and in north Germany a beer and a ``Koem``. These times have given way to a radial change in drinking habits brought on by reunification and tourists returning from abroad. Although the warm summer of 1994 pushed beer comsumption up another 3%, the market is altogether on the decline. In fact only 115 million of the 200 million hectoliter brewing capacity were actually utilised in 1994. Decreasing turnover is not the only problem, as yields are also poor. (orig.) An inconclusive study comparing the effect of concrete and abstract descriptions of belief-inconsistent information.

Linguistic bias is the differential use of linguistic abstraction (as defined by the Linguistic Category Model) to describe the same behaviour for members of different groups. Essentially, it is the tendency to use concrete language for belief-inconsistent behaviours and abstract language for belief-consistent behaviours. Having found that linguistic bias is produced without intention or awareness in many contexts, researchers argue that linguistic bias reflects, reinforces, and transmits pre-existing beliefs, thus playing a role in belief maintenance. Based on the Linguistic Category Model, this assumes that concrete descriptions reduce the impact of belief-inconsistent behaviours while abstract descriptions maximize the impact of belief-consistent behaviours. However, a key study by Geschke, Sassenberg, Ruhrmann, and Sommer [2007] found that concrete descriptions of belief-inconsistent behaviours actually had a greater impact than abstract descriptions, a finding that does not fit easily within the linguistic bias paradigm. Abstract descriptions (e.g. the elderly woman is athletic) are, by definition, more open to interpretation than concrete descriptions (e.g. the elderly woman works out regularly). It is thus possible that abstract descriptions are (1) perceived as having less evidentiary strength than concrete descriptions, and (2) understood in context (i.e. athletic for an elderly woman). In this study, the design of Geschke et al. [2007] was modified to address this possibility. We expected that the differences in the impact of concrete and abstract descriptions would be reduced or reversed, but instead we found that differences were largely absent. This study did not support the findings of Geschke et al. [2007] or the linguistic bias paradigm. We encourage further attempts to understand the strong effect of concrete descriptions for belief-inconsistent behaviour.

The forest state report documents the health status of the forests in Baden-Wuerttemberg every year. Significant tendencies can be identified at the measuring stations in the country. Observed are constantly rising temperatures and an increase of extreme weather. The condition of the forest soils has continuously improved with regard to soil acidification. Soil protection measures and measures for air pollution are measurable here. The average crown defoliation is almost constant at 23.8 percent compared to the previous year. Due to the dry summer of 2015 and the favorable weather conditions in the spring and early summer of 2016, mean foliage loss decreased by 7.5 percentage points to 29.7 percent. But one cannot speak of a trend change here. Rather, it can be assumed that the ash dieback will spread further in the coming years and that there will be an increasing ash tree damage. [German] Der Waldzustandsbericht dokumentiert jaehrlich den Gesundheitszustand der Waelder in Baden-Wuerttemberg. An den Messstationen des Landes lassen sich wichtige Tendenzen erkennen. Beobachtet werden stetig steigende Temperaturen und eine Zunahme extremer Witterungen. Der Zustand der Waldboeden hat sich im Hinblick auf die Bodenversauerung kontinuierlich verbessert. Bodenschutzkalkungsmassnahmen sowie Massnahmen zur Luftreinhaltung wirken hier messbar. Die durchschnittliche Kronenverlichtung ist mit 23,8 Prozent verglichen zum Vorjahr nahezu konstant. Aufgrund des trockenen Sommers 2015 und den guenstigen Witterungsbedingungen im Fruehjahr und Fruehsommer 2016, verringerte sich der mittlere Blattverlust um 7,5 Prozentpunkte auf 29,7 Prozent. Von einer Trendwende kann man aber hier nicht sprechen. Clinicians and their patients recognize the important role, both negative and positive, that facial expression, particularly the glabellar frown lines, plays in self-perception, emotional well-being, and perception by others. This article provides up-to-date information on fundamental properties and mechanisms of action of the major approved formulations of botulinum toxin type A, summarizes recent changes in naming conventions (nonproprietary names mandated by the United States Food and Drug Administration, and describes the reasons for these changes. The request for these changes provides recognition that formulations of botulinum toxins (eg, onabotulinumtoxinA and abobotulinumtoxinA are not interchangeable and that dosing recommendations cannot be based on any one single conversion ratio. The extensive safety, tolerability, and efficacy data are summarized in detail, including the patient-reported outcomes that contribute to overall patient satisfaction and probability treatment continuation. Hybrid modelling for ATES planning and operation in the Utrecht city centre

Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) systems can significantly reduce the energy use and greenhouse gas emissions of buildings in temperate climates. However, the rapid adoption of these systems has evidenced a number of emergent issues with the operation and management of urban ATES systems, which require careful spatial planning to avoid thermal interferences or conflicts with other subsurface functions. These issues have become particularly relevant in the Netherlands, which are currently the leading market for ATES (Bloemendal et al., 2015). In some urban areas of the country, the adoption of ATES technology is thus becoming limited by the available subsurface space. This scarcity is partly caused by current approaches to ATES planning; as such, static permits tend to overestimate pumping rates and yield excessive safety margins, which in turn hamper the energy savings which could be realized by new systems. These aspects are strongly influenced by time-dependent dynamics for the adoption of ATES systems by building owners and operators, and by the variation of ATES well flows under uncertain conditions for building energy demand. In order to take these dynamics into account, previous research (Jaxa-Rozen et al., 2015) introduced a hybrid simulation architecture combining an agent-based model of ATES adoption, a Matlab control design, and a MODFLOW/SEAWAT aquifer model. This architecture was first used to study an idealized case of urban ATES development. This case evidenced a trade-off between the thermal efficiency of individual systems and the collective energy savings realized by ATES systems within a given area, which had already been suggested by other research (e.g. Sommer et al., 2015). These results also indicated that current layout guidelines may be overly conservative, and limit the adoption of new systems. The present study extends this approach to a case study of ATES planning in the city centre of Utrecht, in the Netherlands. This case is

We present a study of a combination of HQET and relativistic QCD to extract the b-quark mass and the B s -meson decay constant from lattice quenched simulations. We start from a small volume, where one can directly simulate the b-quark, and compute the connection to a large volume, where finite size effects are negligible, through a finite size technique. The latter consists of steps extrapolated to the continuum limit, where the b-region is reached through interpolations guided by the effective theory. With the lattice spacing given in terms of the Sommer's scale r 0 and the experimental B s and K masses, we get the final results for the renormalization group invariant mass M b =6.88(10) GeV, translating into anti m b (anti m b )=4.42(6) GeV in the MS scheme, and f B s =191(6) MeV for the decay constant. A renormalization condition for the chromo-magnetic operator, responsible, at leading order in the heavy quark mass expansion of HQET, for the mass splitting between the pseudoscalar and the vector channel in mesonic heavy-light bound states, is provided in terms of lattice correlations functions which well suits a non-perturbative computation involving a large range of renormalization scales and no valence quarks. The two-loop expression of the corresponding anomalous dimension in the Schroedinger functional (SF) scheme is computed starting from results in the literature; it requires a one-loop calculation in the SF scheme with a non-vanishing background field. The cutoff effects affecting the scale evolution of the renormalization factors are studied at one-loop order, and confirmed by non-perturbative quenched computations to be negligible for the numerical precision achievable at present. Paralleling our recent computationally intensive (quasi-Monte Carlo) work for the case N=4 (e-print quant-ph/0308037), we undertake the task for N=6 of computing to high numerical accuracy, the formulas of Sommers and Zyczkowski (e-print quant-ph/0304041) for the (N 2 -1)-dimensional volume and (N 2 -2)-dimensional hyperarea of the (separable and nonseparable) NxN density matrices, based on the Bures (minimal monotone) metric--and also their analogous formulas (e-print quant-ph/0302197) for the (nonmonotone) flat Hilbert-Schmidt metric. With the same seven 10 9 well-distributed ('low-discrepancy') sample points, we estimate the unknown volumes and hyperareas based on five additional (monotone) metrics of interest, including the Kubo-Mori and Wigner-Yanase. Further, we estimate all of these seven volume and seven hyperarea (unknown) quantities when restricted to the separable density matrices. The ratios of separable volumes (hyperareas) to separable plus nonseparable volumes (hyperareas) yield estimates of the separability probabilities of generically rank-6 (rank-5) density matrices. The (rank-6) separability probabilities obtained based on the 35-dimensional volumes appear to be--independently of the metric (each of the seven inducing Haar measure) employed--twice as large as those (rank-5 ones) based on the 34-dimensional hyperareas. (An additional estimate--33.9982--of the ratio of the rank-6 Hilbert-Schmidt separability probability to the rank-4 one is quite clearly close to integral too.) The doubling relationship also appears to hold for the N=4 case for the Hilbert-Schmidt metric, but not the others. We fit simple exact formulas to our estimates of the Hilbert-Schmidt separable volumes and hyperareas in both the N=4 and N=6 cases

FMS leads to high disability levels, poor quality of life, and extensive use of medical care. Effective pharmacological treatment options are rare, and treatment effects are often of limited duration. Duloxetine is a new selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that is licensed for the treatment of pain in diabetic neuropathy. So far two randomized, placebo-controlled trials have investigated the short-term safety and efficacy of duloxetine 60 mg/day and 120 mg/day in patients suffering from FMS over a period of 12 weeks. Both dosages were superior to placebo in pain relief, and improvement in quality of life and depressive symptoms. The analgesic effect was largely independent of the antidepressant action of duloxetine. The higher dose of 120 mg/day further reduced the tender point count and elevated the tender point pain thresholds. Only mild to moderate adverse effects were reported. Duloxetine 60 mg/day and 120 mg/day has proven to be beneficial in the treatment of FMS symptoms. As true for other antidepressants further studies are needed to assess the long-term efficacy and safety of duloxetine as an additional pharmacological treatment option in FMS.Keywords: fibromyalgia syndrome, duloxetine, antidepressant, review, SNRI

Advanced simulation tools were used in developing the climate design for the roof covering the taller of the two blocks at Moscow's Federation Tower. The all-glass roof space at a height of 365 m is designed to accommodate the finest and most exclusive hotel areas. Several restaurants, bars and lounges and a Sky Dance Club will offer entertainment and fabulous views across the whole city. Simulations were used to develop and verify a design that ensures thermal comfort taking into account architectural, climate and utilisation requirements. The structure and the building services were simulated based on a 3D model, and simulations were carried out for summer and winter scenarios. Die vollstaendig glaeserne Turmkappe in 365 m Hoehe soll Raum fuer einen der schoensten und exklusivsten Bereiche des Hotels geben. Diverse Restaurants, Bars und Lounges sowie ein Sky Dance Club sollen einmal zum Verweilen und zur naechtlichen Vergnuegung einladen und dabei stets einen traumhaften Blick ueber die gesamte Stadt ermoeglichen. Mit Hilfe der Simulation wurde fuer die Turmkappe ein Klimakonzept entwickelt und ueberprueft, das die thermische Behaglichkeit unter Beruecksichtigung von Architektur, Klima und Nutzung gewaehrleistet. Dazu wurde die Architektur inklusive der Klimatechnik in einem 3D-Modell abgebildet und fuer den Sommer- und Winterfall berechnet. An inconclusive study comparing the effect of concrete and abstract descriptions of belief-inconsistent information.

Full Text Available Linguistic bias is the differential use of linguistic abstraction (as defined by the Linguistic Category Model to describe the same behaviour for members of different groups. Essentially, it is the tendency to use concrete language for belief-inconsistent behaviours and abstract language for belief-consistent behaviours. Having found that linguistic bias is produced without intention or awareness in many contexts, researchers argue that linguistic bias reflects, reinforces, and transmits pre-existing beliefs, thus playing a role in belief maintenance. Based on the Linguistic Category Model, this assumes that concrete descriptions reduce the impact of belief-inconsistent behaviours while abstract descriptions maximize the impact of belief-consistent behaviours. However, a key study by Geschke, Sassenberg, Ruhrmann, and Sommer [2007] found that concrete descriptions of belief-inconsistent behaviours actually had a greater impact than abstract descriptions, a finding that does not fit easily within the linguistic bias paradigm. Abstract descriptions (e.g. the elderly woman is athletic are, by definition, more open to interpretation than concrete descriptions (e.g. the elderly woman works out regularly. It is thus possible that abstract descriptions are (1 perceived as having less evidentiary strength than concrete descriptions, and (2 understood in context (i.e. athletic for an elderly woman. In this study, the design of Geschke et al. [2007] was modified to address this possibility. We expected that the differences in the impact of concrete and abstract descriptions would be reduced or reversed, but instead we found that differences were largely absent. This study did not support the findings of Geschke et al. [2007] or the linguistic bias paradigm. We encourage further attempts to understand the strong effect of concrete descriptions for belief-inconsistent behaviour.

Wirkt auf diesen landschaftsoekologischen Status quo ein definiertes Zukunftsklima (Klimaszenario) mit +55 cm Meeresspiegel, +30 cm Tidehub, erhoehtem Jahresniederschlag (im Sommer -6%.) und um 2,7 C erhoehter Jahresmitteltemperatur ein, so ergeben sich die folgenden Auswirkungen (ohne Beruecksichtigung morphologischer Anpassung im Vorland), dargestellt im Abschlussbericht Teil A fuer die eingedeichte Marsch, und im Teil B fuer die Unterweser und die Vorlaender: die Flachwasserzonen in der Unterweser nehmen um 29%, die Wattflaechen um 55% und die Tideroehrichte um 250% zu; das unbedeichte Gruenland verliert seine landwirtschaftliche Nutzbarkeit und geht um 30% zurueck. Full Text Available Seit Einführung der neuen Discovery-Kataloge stehen unseren Nutzerinnen und Nutzern zusätzlich Millionen von Dokumenten neben dem lokalen Buchbestand zur Verfügung. Diese Zielgruppe muss in die Lage versetzt werden, die für sie relevanten Titel einfach und sicher zu finden. Die Qualität von Empfehlungsfunktionen und besonders der Relevanz-Ranking-Methoden sind daher für den Erfolg eines Discovery-Systems besonders wichtig. Das Ranking bibliothekarischer Suchmaschinentechnik ignoriert bisher das Feedback durch Nutzerinnen und Nutzer. Die Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Bremen (SuUB setzt mit dem in Bremen entwickelten Discovery-System „E-LIB“ seit Sommer 2011 zusätzlich auf eine Modifikation des Treffer-Rankings über Popularitätsfaktoren der Medien wie Klickstatistik, Auflagen- und Exemplarzahl. Die maßgeschneiderte Entwicklung eines eigenen Bibliothekskataloges, den die SuUB seit 2004 mit dem Discovery-System „E-LIB“ in Bremen betreibt, erlaubt die schnelle und flexible Anpassung von Retrievalfunktionen an die Bedürfnisse der Nutzerinnen und Nutzer vor Ort. This work concentrates on distribution and transport of micropollutants in anthropogenically affected estuary systems. Choosing the tidal Elbe River as an example, the influence of microlagae on two important partial processes of the transport regime, the remobilization (a) from undisturbed sediments and (b) from suspended particulate matter, was simulated and quantified in the laboratory. Benthic and planktonic release of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn into the dissolved phase of the river pelagial were estimated and comparatively evaluated for summer/late summer situation. During that season natural decomposition of suspended particulate matter in the water column thus represents the quantitatively most significant mobilization pathway for particle bound heavy metals in the river section between Hamburg and Glueckstadt. Knowing the composition and heavy metal load of suspended particulate matter, rich in algae, mobilization rates can consequently be calculated for the water column with regard to conditions typical for estuaries. The prognosis of the differing transport behaviour of single heavy metals for greater sections of estuaries is also possible if these rates are implemented into transport-reaction models. (orig.) An operational contrail detection algorithm is applied to day and night overpasses of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). From the classification results the daytime and nighttime coverage by linear shaped contrails over Western Europa is derived. The annual daytime average for the analyzed region of 0.75% shows a strong annual cycle with 1.0% coverage during winter and 0.4% during summer. The day/night ratio reaches the factor 3. Using the radiance contrasts in the 11 {mu}m channel for contrail and adjacent pixels an average visible optical depth for the observed contrails of 0.1 is derived. This leads to an annual mean top of atmosphere radiative forcing by contrails over Central Europe in the range of 0.03 W/m{sup 2} to 0.08 W/m{sup 2}, which is about one magnitude smaller than prior studies suggest. The highest annual mean contrail forcing exceeds 0.12 W/m{sup 2} over Northeastern France, Belgium, Great Britain and Hungary. (orig.) Daraus ergibt sich am Oberrand der Atmosphaere ein mittlerer auf Kondensstreifen zurueckzufuehrender Strahlungsantrieb zwischen 0,03 W/m{sup 2} und 0,08 W/m{sup 2}, was eine Groessenordnung unter den Ergebnissen bisheriger Studien liegt. The essential element of the functioning of patients is the assessment of quality of life and its determinants. Taking into account the depression process and its specific nature this seems to be of special importance. The aim of this paper was the assessment of importance of psychological determinants of quality of life in women with depressive disorders. The tests were carried out on the basis of the analysis of medical documentation, including the psychiatric records. The following criteria were measured: depression level (Beck Hopelessness Scale), quality of life (The Life Satisfaction Questionnaire FLZ according to Fahrenberg), personality model (NEO Five-Factor Inventory), optimism (The Life Orientation Test-Revised LOT-R by M. Scheier, ChS. Carver and M. Bridges adapted by R. Poprawa and Z. Juczyński), purpose in life (The Purpose-in-Life Test developed by Crumbaugh and Maholick according to the authorised translation by Z. Płuzek), social support (The Social Support Questionnaire by Sommer G, Fydrich T, 1989 adapted by Z. Juczyński), health satisfaction (General Health Questionnaire GHQ 28 by David Goldberg). Women diagnosed with depressive disorders were qualified for testing. The tested group of women included 80 patients in the age bracket of 40 to 60 years from the Outpatient Department of Mental Health, Regional Specialised Hospital in Zgierz. The reference group consisted of 30 women showing no symptoms of depressive disorders. The statistical analysis of variables taken into account in the tests showed essential statistical differences between the compared groups with regard to almost all parameters. Significant differences were found in respect of life satisfaction, personality variables, social support, health satisfaction and purpose in life. Increased use of solar energy is needed to save heating energy. In the German climate, however, passive use of solar energy with windows and facades in summer is also accompanied by the risk of overheating the living areas. Simple, automatically regulating systems to protect against overheating are not commercially available at present. The project, `Thermotropic Layers for Glazing of Windows, Facades and Solar Collectors`, aimed to develop thermotropic shading systems for windows, facades and solar collectors. Thermotropic hydrogels and polymer blends were developed, large-area samples produced and characterised under practice-relevant conditions. Building simulations proved that with the help of the polymer systems developed, heating costs can be saved by passive use of solar energy. The knowledge gained has not yet resulted in a commercially marketable product. Processing of large-area products and lifetime testing could not be brought to completion within the project duration. The project partners have thus lodged an application for funding by BMBF (German Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology) to continue the work. (orig.) Therefore, Swiss universities develop clerkships in primary care physicians’ private practices. The objective of this research was to explore the challenges, the stakes, and the difficulties of clinical teachers who supervised final year medical students in their primary care private practice during a 1-month pilot clerkship in Geneva.Methods: Data were collected via a focus group using a semistructured interview guide. Participants were asked about their role as a supervisor and their difficulties and positive experiences. The text of the focus group was transcribed and analyzed qualitatively, with a deductive and inductive approach.Results: The results show the nature of pressures felt by clinical teachers. First, participants experienced the difficulty of having dual roles: the more familiar one of clinician, and the new challenging one of teacher. Second, they felt compelled to fill the gap between the academic context and the private practice context. Clinical teachers were surprised by the extent of the adaptive load, cognitive load, and even the emotional load involved when supervising a trainee in their clinical practice. The context of this rotation demonstrated its utility and its relevance, because it allowed the students to improve their knowledge about the outpatient setting and to develop their professional autonomy and their maturity by taking on more clinical responsibilities.Conclusion: These findings show that future training programs will have to address the needs of clinical teachers as well as bridge the gap between students’ academic training and the skills needed for

The first decade of oligotrophication in Lake Constance : I. The response of phytoplankton biomass and cell size.

Phytoplankton biomass and species composition were measured with a relatively high temporal resolution (once or twice a week during the growing season) from 1979 to 1989 in Lake Constance/Überlingersee. Over this period soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations during winter mixing were reduced by ca. 50% from 104 to 47 μg 1 -1 , which caused a prolongation and amplification of the epilimnetic P depletion during the growth period. Seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton reacted to the decrease of SRP in the following ways: (1) Algal biomass decreased at least proportionally to the winter SRP concentrations in summer, but not in spring and autumn when biomass fluctuated irregularly. (2) The peak of biomass concentration changed from summer to spring. (3) The earlier onset of epilimnetic P depletion during the season in recent years promoted a stronger growth of some pennate diatoms in spring. It caused an amplification of the silicon depletion in summer, which may cause still greater reduction of diatoms and total algal biomass in summer. (4) Reduction of algal biomass during the clear-water phase proper became shorter and less pronounced. (5) The temporal variability of algal biomass decreased in summer and autumn but not in spring. (6) Average cell sizes remained unchanged in summer and autumn but increased in spring during the beginning of oligotrophication. These results are largely in agreement with other studies on lake restoration and expectations derived from the PEG (Plankton Ecology Group) model (Sommer et al. 1986). They show that a 50% reduction of SRP concentrations during homothermy may have pronounced effects on seasonal dynamics of algal biomass in a large and deep lake. The algal response to the external change of SRP concentrations can be described by the Le Chatelier principle, implying that the internal structure of the system (e.g. species composition) changes in order to minimize the effect of the external pressure (e.g. reduction of total

The reasons for choosing between various therapeutic possibilities depend in part on rational and in part on emotional factors. This project dealt with the systematic verification of some decision factors most of which were known already. The project was divided in a qualitative and a quantitative part. The qualitative segment was based on semistructured interviews with patients of general practitioners or of naturopaths. This procedure is often used in ethnological research. It identified and evaluated the main motives for the individual choices of therapies by the patients. The quantitative part of the study was carried out by a procedure often used in social sciences, namely by strictly structured telephone interviews of several thousand policyholders of the health insurance fund Helvetia. The aim of this part of the study was to verify the findings of the qualitative study and to investigate the possible significance of additional sociological factors for the choice between different therapies. The conclusions drawn from the abundance of data show that a widespread use of complementary medicine is a reality. Both parts of the project came to the same conclusions. The patients use complementary medicine in a very pragmatic way, be it alternately, be it in parallel but not necessarily in addition to mainstream medicine. The behavior of the patients is very complex, depends on many factors, and can neither be predicted nor easily influenced, not even by an additional free insurance for complementary medicine which was offered to one of the subgroups of the study (in conjunction with J. Sommer's project 'A Randomized Experiment Studying the Effect of Including Complementary Medicine in the Mandatory Benefit Package of Health Insurance Funds in Switzerland'). Choosing the tidal Elbe River as an example, the influence of microlagae on two important partial processes of the transport regime, the remobilization (a) from undisturbed sediments and (b) from suspended particulate matter, was simulated and quantified in the laboratory. Benthic and planktonic release of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn into the dissolved phase of the river pelagial were estimated and comparatively evaluated for summer/late summer situation. During that season natural decomposition of suspended particulate matter in the water column thus represents the quantitatively most significant mobilization pathway for particle bound heavy metals in the river section between Hamburg and Glueckstadt. Knowing the composition and heavy metal load of suspended particulate matter, rich in algae, mobilization rates can consequently be calculated for the water column with regard to conditions typical for estuaries. The prognosis of the differing transport behaviour of single heavy metals for greater sections of estuaries is also possible if these rates are implemented into transport-reaction models. (orig.) Full Text Available In the Second Macedonian War (200-196 B.C., the res publica reduced the strength of the enemy King Philip V apparently to establish a new political order in Southern Balkans: Assumedly a pro-Roman balance of forces should prevail there, untainted by influence of another major power. A particular senatorial policy towards the Greeks probably did not exist before the fighting in Hellas came to an end in summer 197 B.C. In the same year, the Seleucid king Antiochus III brought large parts of the west coast of Asia Minor under control and set about crossing the Hellespont. Rome subsequently stylized itself as the guardian of freedom for the Greeks living in Hellas and Asia Minor. The statesmen of the res publica could have perceived Antiochus’ expansion as a threat to the mentioned new order. Therefore, the Roman Policy of Freedom was possibly applied primarily to take action against the Seleucid king. The present doctoral thesis describes experimentally measured properties of the resonance spectra of flat microwave billiards with partially broken timereversal invariance induced by an embedded magnetized ferrite. A vector network analyzer determines the complex scattering matrix elements. The data is interpreted in terms of the scattering formalism developed in nuclear physics. At low excitation frequencies the scattering matrix displays isolated resonances. At these the effect of the ferrite on isolated resonances (singlets) and pairs of nearly degenerate resonances (doublets) is investigated. The hallmark of time-reversal symmetry breaking is the violation of reciprocity, i.e. of the symmetry of the scattering matrix. One finds that reciprocity holds in singlets; it is violated in doublets. This is modeled by an effective Hamiltonian of the resonator. A comparison of the model to the data yields time-reversal symmetry breaking matrix elements in the order of the level spacing. Their dependence on the magnetization of the ferrite is understood in terms of its magnetic properties. At higher excitation frequencies the resonances overlap and the scattering matrix elements fluctuate irregularly (Ericson fluctuations). They are analyzed in terms of correlation functions. The data are compared to three models based on random matrix theory. The model by Verbaarschot, Weidenmueller and Zirnbauer describes time-reversal invariant scattering processes. The one by Fyodorov, Savin and Sommers achieves the same for systems with complete time-reversal symmetry breaking. An extended model has been developed that accounts for partial breaking of time-reversal invariance. This extended model is in general agreement with the data, while the applicability of the other two models is limited. The cross-correlation function between forward and backward reactions determines the time-reversal symmetry breaking matrix elements of the Hamiltonian to up to 0.3 mean level spacings. Finally

After the successful testing of smaller solar-assisted district heat supply projects in the first half of the Nineties in Germany (e.g. Ravensburg, Koengen, Neckarsulm, Schwaebisch-Gmuend), the first large-scale plants with long term heat storage started to operate in Hamburg and Friedrichshafen. Thus a target has been reached that had seemed to be an illusion for a long time - the utilisation of solar energy generated in the summer for building heating in wintertime. In Hamburg (collector area = 3,000 square metres) and Friedrichshafen (collector area = 5,600 square metres when finished) buried hot-water storage tanks with a volume of 4,500 cubic metres and 12,000 cubic metres were built; bore-hole heat storage is being tested in a third demonstration project in Neckarsulm. The first part of this plant (collector area = 2,700 square metres, storage capacity approximately 20,000 cubic metres) was put in operation in October 1997. A fourth solar-assisted district heating system with a gravel/water heat storage (volume approximately 8,000 cubic metres) is currently under construction in Chemnitz and supposed to be completed in the second half of 1998. Using affective knowledge to generate and validate a set of emotion-related, action words.

Emotion concepts are built through situated experience. Abstract word meaning is grounded in this affective knowledge, giving words the potential to evoke emotional feelings and reactions (e.g., Vigliocco et al., 2009). In the present work we explore whether words differ in the extent to which they evoke 'specific' emotional knowledge. Using a categorical approach, in which an affective 'context' is created, it is possible to assess whether words proportionally activate knowledge relevant to different emotional states (e.g., 'sadness', 'anger', Stevenson, Mikels & James, 2007a). We argue that this method may be particularly effective when assessing the emotional meaning of action words (e.g., Schacht & Sommer, 2009). In study 1 we use a constrained feature generation task to derive a set of action words that participants associated with six, basic emotional states (see full list in Appendix S1). Generation frequencies were taken to indicate the likelihood that the word would evoke emotional knowledge relevant to the state to which it had been paired. In study 2 a rating task was used to assess the strength of association between the six most frequently generated, or 'typical', action words and corresponding emotion labels. Participants were presented with a series of sentences, in which action words (typical and atypical) and labels were paired e.g., "If you are feeling 'sad' how likely would you be to act in the following way?" … 'cry.' Findings suggest that typical associations were robust. Participants always gave higher ratings to typical vs. atypical action word and label pairings, even when (a) rating direction was manipulated (the label or verb appeared first in the sentence), and (b) the typical behaviours were to be performed by the rater themselves, or others. Full Text Available Introduction: Phosphorus (P is the second limiting nutrient in soils for crop production after nitrogen. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient in crop production. Determination of forms of soil phosphorus is important in the evaluation of soil phosphorus status. Various sequential P fractionation procedures have been used to identify the forms of P and to determine the distribution of P fractions in soils (Chang and Jackson, 1957, Williams et al., 1967; Hedley et al., 1982, but are not particularly sensitive to the various P compounds that may exist in calcareous soils. A Sequential fractionation scheme has been suggested for calcareous soils by which three types of Ca-phosphates i.e. dicalcium phosphate, octacalcium phosphate, and apatite could be identified (Jiang and Gu, 1989. These types of Ca-phosphates were described as Ca2-P (NaHCO3-extractable P, Ca8-P (NH4AC-extractable P and Ca10-P (apatite type, respectively. In this study, the amount and distribution of soil inorganic phosphorus fractions were examined in 49 soil samples of Fars province according to the method described by Jiang and Gu (1989. Materials and Methods: Based on the previous soil survey maps of Fars province and According to Soil Moisture and Temperature Regime Map of Iran (Banaei, 1998, three regions (abadeh, eghlid and noorabad with different Soil Moisture and Temperature Regimes were selected. The soils were comprised Aridic, xeric, and ustic moisture regimes along with mesic, and hyperthemic temperature regimes. 49 representative samples were selected. Planning ATES systems under uncertainty

Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) can contribute to significant reductions in energy use within the built environment, by providing seasonal energy storage in aquifers for the heating and cooling of buildings. ATES systems have experienced a rapid uptake over the last two decades; however, despite successful experiments at the individual level, the overall performance of ATES systems remains below expectations - largely due to suboptimal practices for the planning and operation of systems in urban areas. The interaction between ATES systems and underground aquifers can be interpreted as a common-pool resource problem, in which thermal imbalances or interference could eventually degrade the storage potential of the subsurface. Current planning approaches for ATES systems thus typically follow the precautionary principle. For instance, the permitting process in the Netherlands is intended to minimize thermal interference between ATES systems. However, as shown in recent studies (Sommer et al., 2015; Bakr et al., 2013), a controlled amount of interference may benefit the collective performance of ATES systems. An overly restrictive approach to permitting is instead likely to create an artificial scarcity of available space, limiting the potential of the technology in urban areas. In response, master plans - which take into account the collective arrangement of multiple systems - have emerged as an increasingly popular alternative. However, permits and master plans both take a static, ex ante view of ATES governance, making it difficult to predict the effect of evolving ATES use or climactic conditions on overall performance. In particular, the adoption of new systems by building operators is likely to be driven by the available subsurface space and by the performance of existing systems; these outcomes are themselves a function of planning parameters. A compilation of U.S. Geological Survey pesticide concentration data for water and sediment in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta region: 1990–2010

Beginning around 2000, abundance indices of four pelagic fishes (delta smelt, striped bass, longfin smelt, and threadfin shad) within the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta began to decline sharply (Sommer and others, 2007). These declines collectively became known as the pelagic organism decline (POD). No single cause has been linked to this decline, and current theories suggest that combinations of multiple stressors are likely to blame. Contaminants (including current-use pesticides) are one potential stressor being investigated for its role in the POD (Anderson, 2007). Pesticide concentration data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at multiple sites in the delta region over the past two decades are critical to understanding the potential effects of current-use pesticides on species of concern as well as the overall health of the delta ecosystem. In April 2010, a compilation of contaminant data for the delta region was published by the State Water Resources Control Board (Johnson and others, 2010). Pesticide occurrence was the major focus of this report, which concluded that “there was insufficient high quality data available to make conclusions about the potential role of specific contaminants in the POD.” The report cited multiple sources; however, data collected by the USGS were not included in the publication even though these data met all criteria listed for inclusion in the report. What follows is a summary of publicly available USGS data for pesticide concentrations in surface water and sediments within the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta region from the years 1990 through 2010. Data were retrieved though the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) database, a publicly available online-data repository (U.S. Geological Survey, 1998), and from published USGS reports (also available online at http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/). . Dem Wolkenmodul zugrundeliegende Annahmen konnten in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Institut fuer Troposphaerenforschung (IFT, Leipzig) und der Universitaet Cottbus (BTU) ueberprueft werden. Durch Vergleiche zwischen prognostizierten PM{sub 10}-Konzentrationen und Messungen an Stationen des Landesumweltamtes Nordrhein-Westfalen wurde das Aerosol-Dynamik Modell fuer Episoden im Sommer und Winter 1997 validiert. Die Validierung zeigt, dass die prognostizierten Aerosolkonzentrationen im Gebiet von Nordrhein Westfalen groesstenteils innerhalb der Toleranzen liegen, die von der Europaeischen Union als Bewertungskriterien fuer Luftschadstoffmodelle vorgegeben wurden. Eine weitere Validierung, die ueber das Gebiet von Nordrhein-Westfalen hinaus reicht, wurde mit Hilfe von Messungen der Sulfat- und Schwebstaubkonzentrationen an EMEP Stationen durchgefuehrt. Damit liegt ein Aerosol-Dynamik-Modell vor, das bereits routinemaessig innerhalb des EURAD Modellsystems eingesetzt wird und sich fuer den Einsatz bei der Umsetzung von Richtlinien der EU zur Luftqualitaet eignet. Vorbereitende Massnahmen zur Beschreibung aerosolbedingter Modifikationen des aktinischen Flusses wurden durchgefuehrt. As part of a study dealing with the concentration of benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene in the neigbourhood of fillings stations (indoor and outdoor air, benzene in the blood, t,t-muconous acid in urine), a total of about 70 volatile organic compounds were analysed in the `personal air` (personal sampler) of 13 persons living in the neighbourhood of the filling stations and 6 control persons during the summer of 1996. The mean concentrations of alkene and cycloalkene were below 3 {mu}g/m{sup 3}. The mean concentrations of benzene, m/p-xylene and toluene were 4.5 {mu}g/m{sup 3}, 6.8 {mu}g/m{sup 3}, and 34 {mu}g/m{sup 3}, respectively. The mean contamination of all other substances was below 3 {mu}g/m{sup 3}, halogenated hydrocarbons were below 1 {mu}g/m{sup 3}. The mean VOC-concentrations in the personal air of those persons living next to the filling stations and that seen in the control persons were not different. On the whole, the concentrations of total volatile organic substances were low, all the higher values could be explained by individual occupational or private activities (e.g. redecoration of the flat or smoking). Compared with the data of the `environmental survey` 1990/91, all substances revealed substantially lower mean values; we suggest that seasonal differences in the study time may be the main cause. The exit of the use of nuclear energy in Germany, it was decided in the summer of 2011 in a rush. Now it is becoming obvious that there is no realistic plan for the conversion of energy supply in the envisaged deadline of ten years. For the conversion of our entire power supply and therefore our economy the period is too short. It lacks a robust empirical reason that have to deal with the issues of security of supply, the affordability, the impact on economic development and social justice. Thus, this treansition threatens to fail at their contradictions. Konrad Kleinknecht tries in his book, to name the problems and to find answers. For him, arise the following questions: What are our opportunity to replace with wind and solar power to replace a part of the power supply? What power sources provide secured capacity? Can we dispense with coal-fired plants? Do we need new power lines? How power may be stored? How real is the risk of blackouts in windless nights? Will the power prices continue to rise? Can be avoided the major risks of the energy transition with a fundamental reform of the Renewable Energies Act (EEG)? The power supply must serve the common good and benefit the industrial site Germany. A blackout would be a disaster for the whole country, it must be avoided at all events. Full Text Available I fjor sommer ble Europa rammet av en hetebølge og tusenvis av eldre mennesker døde. Sammenhengen mellom helsetilstand og påvirkning av klima er kompleks og medisinske, sosiale og miljømessige faktorer er involvert. Imidlertid er hete- og kulderelaterte sykdommer, skade og død i høy grad mulig å forebygge, og det er behov for å analysere denne situasjonen og andre ekstreme værsituasjoner for å kunne sikre helsen til eldre personer ved liknede hendelser i fremtiden.   Artikkelen gir en oversikt over litteratur som omhandler sykelighet og dødelighet som følge av ekstreme værforhold: hete, kulde og situasjoner der transport, elektrisitet og andre leveranser er begrenset, som etter en orkan, enorme snøfall eller liknende. Sammenhenger mellom sykelighet, dødelighet og temperatur i alminnelighet bli også omtalt, med spesielt fokus på de eldre.            Eldre som lever alene og er sosialt isolerte, og spesielt de som har funksjonshemning eller kognitiv svikt har høyest risiko for sykdom, skade og død i ekstreme værsituasjoner. Dette kan trolig i stor grad forebygges. Det anbefales at alle kommuner har kriseplaner for naturkatastrofer og ekstreme værsituasjoner som spesielt inneholder tiltak rettet mot sårbare eldre. High energy neutrinos from astrophysical accelerators of cosmic ray nuclei

Ongoing experimental efforts to detect cosmic sources of high energy neutrinos are guided by the expectation that astrophysical accelerators of cosmic ray protons would also generate neutrinos through interactions with ambient matter and/or photons. However, there will be a reduction in the predicted neutrino flux if cosmic ray sources accelerate not only protons but also significant numbers of heavier nuclei, as is indicated by recent air shower data. We consider plausible extragalactic sources such as active galactic nuclei, gamma ray bursts and starburst galaxies and demand consistency with the observed cosmic ray composition and energy spectrum at Earth after allowing for propagation through intergalactic radiation fields. This allows us to calculate the expected neutrino fluxes from the sources, normalized to the observed cosmic ray spectrum. systematically decrease until a point of saturation at u* = 0.7 cm/s. Results suggest a saturation in the tangential stress, anticipating that similar behavior will be observed in the open ocean. A comparison with studies of small-scale Langmuir circulations and Langmuir numbers shows that thermal footprints in infrared images are consistent with Langmuir circulations and depend strongly on wind wave conditions. ¬søkte artsammensetning, egg/oocysteproduksjon og parasittutvikling i et område sørvest i Yukon, Canada, der Chisana caribou’en holder til. Møkkprøver fra 50 voksne simler, holdt i en midlertidig inngjerding i det naturlige beiteområdet ved Bondary Lake, ble samlet og analysert i løpet av fem prøveperioder. Parasitter fra minst seks slekter ble funnet: materialet omfattet egg av Trichostrongylidae-arter (mest sannsynlig Ostertagia gruehneri og Teledorsagia boreoarcti¬cus, Marshallagia-art, Anaplocephalidae-bendelmark og Skrjabinema-art, oocyster av Eimeria-arter, og ryggpiggete førstestadiums Protostrongylidae-larver, bl.a. av Parelaphostrongylus andersoni. I ferske møkkprøver var prosentvis tilstedeværelse av Trichostrongylidae-egg nesten 100 % gjennom prøveperioden, men median intensitet (parasittmengde økte statistisk signifikant fra 8 til 34 egg per gram under kalvingens mest intense periode og avtok til 12 egg per gram to uker etter kalving. Møkk fra forsøkssimlene ble den 4. mai plassert i tre felt utenfor området der simlene ble holdt inngjerdet, og undersøkt hver tiende dag for å følge parasittutviklingen under naturlige betingelser. Det totale antall av egg + larver Trichostrongylidae i feltene forandret seg ikke; larvemengden økte samtidig som eggmengden avtok. Tilstedeværelsen av andre parasitter i feltene forble også konstant over tid. Vår studie er den første til å dokumentere parasittdiversiteten i Chisanavillreinen og å undersøke utviklingen og overlevelsen av egg og larver gjennom vår og tidlig sommer.

Schmalen Luzin (Feldberger Seengebiet, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) eingesetzt. Im ersten Erprobungsjahr ging es schwerpunktmaessig um die Induzierung der Calcitfaellung im Hypolimnion und die Untersuchung ihrer Wirksamkeit auf die P-Elimination unter Sauerstoffmangel. Waehrend der zwei ca. einmonatigen Betriebszyklen im Zeitraum vom 26.06.1996 bis 05.10.1996 wurden 140 t Ca(OH){sub 2} und 416 000 m{sup 3} Luft in das Hypolimnion des Carwitzer Beckens (Schmaler Luzin) eingebracht. Die pH-Werte im Hypolimnion wurden von 7,2 auf bis zu 9,1, ueber dem Sediment (2-3 cm) von 7,2 bis 8,2 und in den oberen Sedimentschichten von 7,4 auf bis zu 8,6 angehoben. Dadurch wurde das Kalk-Kohlensaeure-Gleichgewicht zum Carbonat hin verschoben, es kam zu Calcitfaellungen im Hypolimnion. Wie zu erwarten war, reichte die Betriebsdauer der Tiefenwasserbelueftung und die eingetragene Sauerstoffmenge nicht aus, um im gesamten Hypolimnion oxische Bedingungen herzustellen. Im unteren Bereich des Hypolimnions ergaben sich auch nach den Betriebszyklen anoxische Verhaeltnisse. Trotzdem kam es zu einer Phosphorabnahme. Ueber die kuenstlich ausgeloeste Calcitpraezipitation erfolgte eine Phosphor-Mitfaellung. Diese Phosphor-Mitfaellung wurde durch die Abnahme von geloestem reaktivem Phosphor und Gesamtphosphor sowohl im hypolimnischen Wasser als auch an der Sediment-Wasser-Kontaktzone belegt. Die Konzentration an geloestem reaktivem Phosphor ueber dem Sediment (2-3 cm) lag im Sommer 1996 mit 0,04 mgl{sup -1} um fast eine Zehnerpotenz niedriger als 1995 (0,31 mgl{sup -1}). (orig.)

Full Text Available id the Hittites, a landlocked nation from central Anatolia, have any contacts with the Aegean region and its peoples? This has been a hotly contested issue ever since 1924, when E. Forrer claimed to have discovered a reference to Homeric Greeks in Hittite texts mentioning a country called Ahhiyawa. Almost as soon as the theory appeared, it was refuted by many prominent Hittitologists, most notably F. Sommer and A. Goetze, who claimed Ahhiyawa was just one of the Anatolian principalities. But there were also those who concurred with Forrer's claims - F. Schachermeyer and G. L. Huxley. Some scholars later propounded their own theories about the location of Ahhiyawa, placing it in the area of the Troad or Thrace. Recent scholarship mostly agrees with Guterbock that Ahhiyawa must have had some connection with the Mycenaeans, but not all have been persuaded. There are several Hittite documents in which Ahhiyawa appears. The earliest of there is the so-called Indictment of Madduwata. It dates to the beginning of the 14''' century B. C. and recounts Hittite dealings with a certain Madduwata, forced to flee his country by Attarsiya, whom the Hittites called Man of Ahhiya(wa. Madduwata was installed as a Hittite vassal ruler somewhere in southwestern Anatolia; however, he proved to be an ungrateful and overambitious person, who caused serious trouble for his overlord by attacking Hittite possessions in what appears to have been the area of classical Lycia and Caria. Later he even invaded Cyprus in alliance with his former enemy Attarsiya. The next reference to Ahhiyawa comes from the time of the Hittite king Mursilli, who reigned in the last quarter of the 14''' century B. C. He conquered the country of Arzawa, which lay in the area of classical Lydia, with its capital Apasa (classical Ephesus. Full Text Available Introduction: Soil aggregate stability is a key factor in soil resistivity to mechanical stresses, including the impacts of rainfall and surface runoff, and thus to water erosion (Canasveras et al., 2010. Various indicators have been proposed to characterize and quantify soil aggregate stability, for example percentage of water-stable aggregates (WSA, mean weight diameter (MWD, geometric mean diameter (GMD of aggregates, and water-dispersible clay (WDC content (Calero et al., 2008. Unfortunately, the experimental methods available to determine these indicators are laborious, time-consuming and difficult to standardize (Canasveras et al., 2010. Therefore, it would be advantageous if aggregate stability could be predicted indirectly from more easily available data (Besalatpour et al., 2014. The main objective of this study is to investigate the potential use of support vector machines (SVMs method for estimating soil aggregate stability (as quantified by GMD as compared to multiple linear regression approach. Materials and Methods: The study area was part of the Bazoft watershed (31° 37′ to 32° 39′ N and 49° 34′ to 50° 32′ E, which is located in the Northern part of the Karun river basin in central Iran. A total of 160 soil samples were collected from the top 5 cm of soil surface. Some easily available characteristics including topographic, vegetation, and soil properties were used as inputs. Soil organic matter (SOM content was determined by the Walkley-Black method (Nelson & Sommers, 1986. Particle size distribution in the soil samples (clay, silt, sand, fine sand, and very fine sand were measured using the procedure described by Gee & Bauder (1986 and calcium carbonate equivalent (CCE content was determined by the back-titration method (Nelson, 1982. On the other hand, in the development practice of component-based systems with a dynamic architecture (i.e. architecture with dynamic reconfiguration, and finally with a mobile architecture (i.e. architecture with dynamic component mobility confirms the inadequacy of the design methods contained in UML 2.0. of the spin-Hall effect, spin-torque investigations and CPP GMR (current perpendicular plane giant magnetoresistance). Schneider et al have studied the Hall effect of laser ablated Co2(MnFe)Si thin films. Recently Inomata's group has reported on a high CPP GMR effect based on CFSA [19]. In this issue a theoretical study by Dai et al reports on the interfaces between CCFA and very thin chromium layers. Here the interface stays half-metallic which is a promising result regarding the realization of potential GMR devices. For spin-torque applications special requirements concerning the materials are necessary. Low damping constants, low magnetic moments and a perpendicular anisotropy are favourable properties. Ferrimagnetic Heusler compounds are candidates for low magnetic moments despite a high spin polarization and a high Curie temperature [20, 21]. Mn3Ga shows additionally a tetragonal distortion, which is favourable for perpendicular anisotropy [21]. The stability of Heusler compounds versus structural distortion is a well known phenomenon in shape memory alloys [22].
