There are diverse etiologies of diffuse pulmonary hemorrhage, so specific diagnosis may be difficult. Conventional radiography tends to be misleading as hemoptysis may lacking in patients with hemorrhagic anemia. Diffuse pulmonary hemorrhage should be differentiated from focal pulmonary hemorrhage resulting from chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, active infection (tuberculosis) neoplasia, trauma, or embolism. zu Anpassungsreaktionen mit Ausbildung von Osteophyten am Unterrand des Humeruskopfs und Knorpeldefekten v. a. am Glenoid. Die Omarthrose ist haeufig koexistent mit anderen Veraenderungen der Schulter. In fortgeschrittenem Stadium beguenstigen sich Defekte der Rotatorenmanschette und eine Omarthrose gegenseitig. Degenerative Veraenderungen des Akromioklavikular(AC)-Gelenks kommen im Alter regelhaft vor, sind oft asymptomatisch und korrelieren nur maessig mit der Klinik. Eine symptomatische AC-Gelenk-Arthrose ist jedoch haeufig koexistent mit degenerativen Veraenderungen des Glenohumeralgelenks. Roentgenaufnahmen sind Teil der Basisdiagnostik, korrelieren jedoch schlecht mit der klinischen Symptomatik und sind nicht geeignet, um Fruehzeichen der Arthrose zu erkennen. Die Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) weist eine deutlich hoehere Sensitivitaet zur Detektion von Knorpellaesionen auf und zeigt relevante Weichteilbefunde wie Labrum- und ligamentaere Veraenderungen, die im Rahmen einer Instabilitaet auftreten koennen. Bei der Diagnostik der Arthrose des AC-Gelenks ist die MRT den anderen Methoden in der Detaildiagnostik ueberlegen, insbesondere um klinisch relevante Befunde wie ein periartikulaeres Knochenmarkoedem oder eine begleitende AC-Gelenk-Kapsulitis beurteilen zu koennen. Fruehe degenerative Veraenderungen lassen sich mittels Roentgen nicht erkennen, bei klinischem Verdacht sollte eine MRT erfolgen Bei MRT-Untersuchungen ist die intravenoese Gabe von Kontrastmittel zur Beurteilung des Ausmasses einer Synovialitis bei symptomatischer Arthrose sinnvoll. Zur Planung des Gelenkersatzes sollte eine Schnittbildgebung erfolgen. (orig.)

Diagnosis of inflammatory rheumatic diseases is besides clinical parameters mainly based on the potential for differential diagnosis of radiographic symptoms obtained by systematic analysis. The initial analysis should emphasize which part of the joint is involved referring to synovial disease, cartilage disease or disease of the enthesis. Synovial arthropathies are assessed regarding soft tissue swelling, soft tissue opacification and the presence of erosions. Cartilaginous pathology is reflected by reduced or increased joint space, calcifications and subchondral bone changes. Enthesopathy is typically located at tendon-ligament and joint capsule attachment, where osteoproliferative but also erosive changes might occur. Lastly, differential diagnosis of arthropathies is mainly based on distribution and allocation of affected joints. (orig.)

Objective: In this prospective study, the time to remission after radiosynovectomy (RSV) was analyzed and the influence of age, sex, underlying disease, type of joint, and duration of illness on the success rate of RSV was determined. Methods: A total number of 57 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (n = 33) and arthrosis (n = 21) with a total number of 130 treated joints (36 knee, 66 small and 28 medium-size joints) were monitored using visual analogue scales (VAS) from one week before RSV up to four to six months after RSV. The patients had to answer 3 times daily for pain intensity of the treated joint. The time until remission was determined according to the Kaplan-Meier survivorship function. The influence of the prognosis parameters on outcome of RSV was determined by multivariate discriminant analysis. Results: After six months, the probability of pain relief of more than 20% amounted to 78% and was significantly dependent on the age of the patient (p = 0.02) and the duration of illness (p = 0.05), however not on sex (p = 0.17), underlying disease (p = 0.23), and type of joint (p = 0.69). Conclusion: Irrespective of sex, type of joint and underlying disease, a measurable pain relief can be achieved with RSV in 78% of the patients with synovitis, whereby effectiveness is decreasing with increasing age and progress of illness. With the publication of the 2nd part to Volume VI, 'Bones - joints - soft tissues', the 7th edition of 'Diagnostic radiology in the hospital and medical practice' is complete. The advances made particularly during the past decade in the field of diagnostic radiology have made it neccesary for all the individual sections to be completely revised. Recently developed methods of imaging like sonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance tomography are increasingly used as a replacement for or, at least, an adjunct to conventional X-ray procedures. Owing to the development and continuous refinement of related methods of intervention the gap between mere diagnostic applications and therapeutic uses of radiology could eventually be closed. The issues mainly discussed in this volume are bone fractures and healing, bone transplantation, osteopathy and osteoarthropathy, fibrous dyplasia or Albright's disease, Pagetoid osteitis, genetically transmitted constitutional disorders of the skeleton and soft tissue changes. Critical parameters were calculated using the one-dimensional multigroup transport theory. Calculations have been performed for water mixture of uranium metal and uranium oxides and plutonium nitrates to determine the dimensions of simple critical geometries (sphere and cylinder). The results of the calculations were plotted showing critical parameters (volume, radius or critical mass). The critical values obtained in Handbuch zur Kritikalitat were used to compare with critical parameters. A sensitivity study for the influences of mesh space size, multigroup structure and order of the S sub(n) approximation on the critical radius was carried out. Esta obra era parte do amplo estudo histórico-artístico, iniciado por Kugler na década de 1830, que simbolizou o nascimento da moderna história universal da arte em língua alemã. No que se refere a Burckhardt, a participação no Manual de História da Arte deixou transparecer elementos de sua futura descoberta historiográfica: a Renascença italiana. Buscaremos, nas infinitas linhas da segunda edição do manual de Kugler, os traços da pena de Burckhardt, onde cintilam dois componentes:de um lado, a arte como expressão fundamental para o entendimento histórico; de outro, a passagem que conduz da Idade Média ao Renascimento e o papel da Itália nessa transformação.Between June and September of 1847, Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897 worked in Berlin as an assistant tom his former professor, Franz Kugler (1808-1858, in the second edition, revised and amplified, of Handbuch der Kunstgeschichte of 1848. This work was part of a broad historic-artistic study, started by Kugler in the 1830s.This study symbolized the birth of the modern universal art history in the German language. Related to Burckhardt, the participation in the History of Art Manual let elements of his future historiographical discovery appear: the Italian Renascence. We will try to get, therefore, in the infinite lines of the second edition of Kugler's manual, the traces of Burckhardt's words. In such traces, two components scintillate: on one side, the art as fundamental expression for the historical understanding; on the other, the passage that leads from Middle Age to Renascence and Italy's role in this transformation.

Full Text Available Knöcherne Erosionen stellen eine wesentliche Ursache für die funktionelle Einschränkung von Patienten mit rheumatoider Arthritis dar. Bis vor kurzem war über den Pathomechanismus dieser Veränderungen nur wenig bekannt. Dieser Review faßt die letzten Erkenntnisse über die Ausbildung einer Knochenschädigung bei entzündlichen Gelenkerkrankungen zusammen und fokussiert insbesondere die Rolle von Osteoklasten. Es wird ein Überblickzu den Hinweisen für eine Präsenz von Osteoklasten im entzündlich veränderten Gelenk gegeben. Weiters werden die Faktoren diskutiert, die die Osteoklastogenese im Rahmen einer Gelenkentzündung aktivieren können. Hier wird im besonderen auf die Rolle von Receptor-Activator of Nuclear Factor Kappa B Ligand (RANKL eingegangen. Im weiteren werden die Auswirkungen einer Osteoklastenhemmung in den verschiedenen Arthritismodellen zusammengefaßt und Möglichkeiten einer therapeutischen Nutzung bei rheumatoider Arthritis diskutiert.

Osteoarthitis is the most common joint disease affecting over 60% of the elderly population. It is characterized by the progressive erosion of articular cartilage leading to incapacity of movement. In the great majority of instances, osteoarthritis appears insidiously, without apparent initiating cause. This primary form is usually oligoarticular involving hip, knee, cervical vertebrae, interphalangeal joints of the fingers or tarsometatarsal joints of the feet. In case of an underlying systemic diasease or local injury the cartilage destruction is considered as secondary osteoarthritis. The pathogenesis of primary osteoarthritis suggests an intrinsic disease of cartilage in which biochemical and metabolic alterations result in its breakdown. Within the last decades different models were stablished which also concentrated on other joint structures such as bone or ligaments. Changes of the subchondral bone were found to precide cartilage damage suggesting a primary alteration of the subchondral region. Other studies concentrated on the metabolic activity of chondrocytes in healthy cartilage of osteoarthritis patients. The precise event that leads to these changes is still not clear. This review concentrates on the histological features in the course of the disease and tries to provide a summary on different pathogenetic concepts. (orig.) Purpose: Functional computed tomography for visualization and quantification of subchondral bone mineralization using CT osteoabsorptiometry (CT-OAM). Materials and Methods: Tarsometatarsal (TMT) and metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints of 46 human hallux valgus (HV) specimens were examined (sagittal 1/1/1 mm) on a single slice CT scanner SCT (Somatom Plus 4, Siemens AG). Subchondral bone pixels were segmented and assigned to 10 density value groups (triangle 100 HU, range 200 - 1200 HU) the pixels using volume rendering technique (VRT). The data analysis considered the severity of HV as determined by the radiographically measured HV-angle (a.p. projection). Results: CT-OAM could generate reproducible densitograms of the distribution pattern of the subchondral bone density for all four joint surfaces (TMT and MTP joints). The bone density localization enables the assignment to different groups, showing a characteristic HV-angle-dependent distribution of the maximum bone mineralization of the load-dependent densitogram (p < 0.001). Conclusion: CT-OAM is a functional CT technique for visualizing and quantifying the distribution of the subchondral bone density, enabling a noninvasive load-dependent assessment of the joint surfaces. Load-dependent densitograms of hallux valgus specimens show a characteristic correlation with an increase of the HV-angle. (orig.) Aus einem Studium der Literatur, chirurgischen Befunden und Untersuchungen an Leichen kann es als unwahrscheinlich angesehen werden, dass bei einer Fussverstauchung vom Inversionstyp ein Riss des vorderen tibiofibularen Ligraments haeufig zusammen mit einem Gelenkkapselriss und einem seitlichen Baenderriss auftritt. Entgegen der Beobachtung anderer Verfasser fanden wir, dass ein Riss des vorderen tibiofularen Ligaments in keiner Weise aus dem Vorhandensein oder Nichtvorhandensein folgender arthrographischer Befunde geschlossen werden konnte: a) kontrastfreie Zone, b) tibiofibularer Rezessus, oder c) beide zusammen. Ein Gelenkkapselriss kann angenommen werden, wenn Kontrastmittel aus dem Gelenk in das weiche Gewebe austritt, ohne unterhalb oder seitlich in den Aussenknoechel zu dringen. Ein Austritt des Kontrastmittels unterhalb und seitlich des Aussenknoechels deutet auf einen Riss des vorderen tabofibularen Ligaments hin. Die anatomischen Zusammenhaenge zwischen Bandverbindung, Gelenkkapsel, tibiofibularem Rezessus und dem vorderen talofibularen Ligament wurden an Leichen und waehrend der chirurgischen Eingriffe studiert. Full Text Available Anke Rohde und Andreas Marneros haben sich ein hohes Ziel gesetzt: ein übersichtliches Lehrbuch für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, das erstmals eine systematische Zusammenstellung des Wissens über geschlechtsspezifische Aspekte von Symptomatologie, Epidemiologie, Diagnostik, Pharmakotherapie und Psychotherapie psychischer Störungen enthält. Bemerkenswert ist dabei zweierlei: Erstens werden bei der Betrachtung geschlechtsspezifischer Unterschiede im Sinne der Genderforschung Frauen und Männer berücksichtigt, zweitens wird ein vollständiger Überblick sowohl über die häufigen und bekannten psychischen Störungen als auch die äußerst seltenen psychiatrischen Erkrankungen der gesamten Altersspanne gegeben. This contribution outlines possibilities and limitations of whole-body MRI for investigating musculoskeletal diseases. Benefits and drawbacks of the novel whole-body MRI technology are discussed and a possible whole-body MRI sequence protocol for musculoskeletal examinations is proposed. Muscle, joint and bone diseases are discussed in which the application of whole-body MRI may be of advantage. Particularly, polymyositis, muscledystrophy, rheumatoid arthritis, spondylitis ancylosans, multiple trauma, skeletal metastases, multiple myeloma and malignant lymphoma are mentioned. Whole-body MRI opens new advantages for the examination of multifocal musculoskeletal diseases. The skeleton, the peripheral soft tissues, and the joints have become important indications to use MRI routinely. About 25-35% of daily examinations focus on these anatomic sites. Superior contrast resolution, the option of different imaging planes, and the unsurpassed visualization of bone marrow, fibrous and hyaline cartilage, ligaments, and tendons are the reasons for the overwhelming success of this imaging method. MRI often provides the direct way to diagnosis. More and more the so-called `step by step` approach to diagnosis by imaging methods is being abandoned in favor of the primary use of MRI. The present survey summarizes the main indications for MRI in the field of the musculoskeletal system, in adults as well as in children. Special topics like tumors, inflammation, ischemia, and trauma are discussed. Some anatomic sites like the carpal joint, the shoulder, and the knee are presented in more detail. (orig.) This book aims to point out the state of biogas technology and possible future developments. To that end more than 500 biogas plants were investigated and conclusions drawn. Selected plants are described in detail. In the annex, plants in operation and their producers are listed (position 1983) and information is provided on public financing aids. Besides such practical information, the book deals with problem complexes and offers proposals for future research and development work.

This final report for the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) takes a look at the influence of icing-up on the operation of wind turbines in mountainous areas. Within the Swiss research project 'Alpine Test Site Guetsch', extensive icing studies were carried out at the Guetsch site near Andermatt, Switzerland. This document deals with the following subjects: Information about ice formation on structures, in particular with respect to wind turbines, standards and international research activities, wind measurements under icing-up conditions, estimation of the frequency of icing-up conditions, effects of icing-up on wind turbines, ice detection, measures available for de-icing and anti-icing as well as ice throw. A list of factors to be taken into account by the planners and operators of wind turbines in alpine environments is presented.

Around 1560, landgrave William IV. founded on his Cassel castle the first permanent observatory of modern times in Europe, and started to occupy himself with systematic sky observations. From the beginning, the main interest was focussed on the fixed stars, since William had recognized that exact position determinations were a prerequisite for further progress in astronomy. The observatory personnel was enlarged, in 1579, by the mathematician, clock-maker and instrument-maker Jost Bürgi, and in 1584 by the practical astronomer Christoph Rothmann. Since that time, intense work was carried out by creating a catalogue of fixed stars, based on own observations, which was completed in 1589. The accuracy of its stellar positions had not been reached in the past, and even superseded that of the almost contemporary catalogue by Tycho Brahe. Research in theoretical astronomy and cosmology at the landgrave's court in Cassel was also revolutionary: the acceptance of the heliocentric world system, investigations on refraction, the dismissal of the concept of solid planetary spheres and even that of a world ether, the nature of cometary tails, etc. Christoph Rothmann's work, edited here for the first time on the basis of the original manuscript, had been drafted as a commentary or introduction to his catalogue of fixed stars. He describes the construction and use of astronomical instruments, he unfolds his concepts of the system of the world on a heliocentric basis without solid planetary spheres to which he was lead by his research on refraction, he discusses the relation between astronomy and theology, and describes his revolutionary work on the Cassel star catalogue. This work constitutes a compendium of theoretical and practical astronomy of the late 16th century whose major scientific importance lies in the fact that it achieves scientific excellence in its time both because of the multitude of topics and because of the high level of discussion.

The series 'Medical Radiology - Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Oncology' is the successor to the well known 'Encyclopedia of Medical Radiology/Handbuch der medizinischen Radiologie'. 'Medical Radiology' brings the state of the art on special topics in a timely fashion. This volume 'Innovation in Radiation Oncology', edited by H.R. Withers and L.J. Peters, presents data on the development of new therapeutic strategies in different oncologic diseases. 57 authors wrote 32 chapters covering a braod range of topics. The contributors have written their chapters with the practicing radiation oncologist in mind. The first chapter sets the stage by reviewing the quality of radiation oncology as it is practiced in the majority of radiation oncology centers in the United States. Plain-film radiography is an important and basic element in the assessment of inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Its various uses include assessment of inflammatory osseous destruction and the activity of inflammatory changes. Furthermore, the inflammatory collateral phenomena can indicate an acute clinical phase, and the articular soft tissue swelling and tenosynovitis are shown directly and indirectly very clearly. On the other hand, high-resolution computed tomography is very capable of showing cortical structures of bone complementary to MR. In some special clinical questions and anatomical regions, especially the axial skeleton, it delivers information of high specifity, partly for definitive diagnosis and partly for planning surgical procedures. The assessment of changes in the sacroiliac joints, sternoclavicular joints and craniocervical junction are domains of computed tomography. (orig.) The popularity of marathon running has increased during recent years, which is reflected by the dramatic increase in the number of competitions and participants. Running a marathon itself does not usually cause any severe lesions of the joints but the problems mostly occur during training prior to the marathon. Before the event runners often question whether they can successfully take part in the competition and cope with the pain that might occur during running. In addition to the rare acute trauma, which is in general caused by falls or slipping, chronic injuries are of particular relevance for long distance running. This article describes the typical patterns of injuries to long distance runners, the positive effects of running a marathon and the risk factors for injuries. (orig.) The advanced handbook of safety analyses (HSA) comprises a comprehensive electronic collection of knowledge for the compilation and conduction of safety analyses in the area of reactor, plant and containment behaviour as well as results of existing safety analyses (performed by GRS in the past) with characteristic specifications and further background information. In addition, know-how from the analysis software development and validation process is presented and relevant rules and regulations with regard to safety demonstration are provided. The HSA comprehensively covers the topic thermo-hydraulic safety analyses (except natural hazards, man-made hazards and malicious acts) for German pressurized and boiling water reactors for power and non-power operational states. In principle, the structure of the HSA-content represents the analytical approach utilized by safety analyses and applying the knowledge from safety analyses to technical support services. On the basis of a multilevel preparation of information to the topics ''compilation of safety analyses'', ''compilation of data bases'', ''assessment of safety analyses'', ''performed safety analyses'', ''rules and regulation'' and ''ATHLET-validation'' the HSA addresses users with different background, allowing them to enter the HSA at different levels. Moreover, the HSA serves as a reference book, which is designed future-oriented, freely configurable related to the content, completely integrated into the GRS internal portal and prepared to be used by a growing user group.

Bone marrow edema of the knee joint is a frequent clinical picture in MR diagnostics. It can be accompanied by symptoms and pain in the joint. Diseases that are associated with bone marrow edema can be classified into different groups. Group 1 includes vascular ischemic bone marrow edema with osteonecrosis (synonyms: SONK or Ahlbaeck's disease), osteochondrosis dissecans, and bone marrow edema syndrome. Group 2 comprises traumatic or mechanical bone marrow edema. Group 3 encompasses reactive bone marrow edemas such as those occurring in gonarthrosis, postoperative bone marrow edemas, and reactive edemas in tumors or tumorlike diseases. Evidence for bone marrow edema is effectively provided by MRI, but purely morphological MR information is often unspecific so that anamnestic and clinical details are necessary in most cases for definitive disease classification. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a sensitive diagnostic modality for the detection of inflammatory changes in peripheral joints. Nevertheless, the widespread clinical use of MRI in assessing patients with early rheumatoid arthritis is still hampered by the technical complexity and higher cost of MRI compared with conventional radiography. This overview summarizes the results of recent research and gives practical tips on how to perform MRI of the hands. The authors present an MR protocol for hand imaging, discuss the pros and cons of low-field MR scanners, and outline pitfalls and artifacts. The MRI changes associated with rheumatoid arthritis such as synovitis, tenosynovitis, erosions, and bone marrow edema are described including their prognostic significance. The proven facts on the validation and grading of MR changes in rheumatoid arthritis are summarized. Finally, the role of MRI in the differential diagnosis of arthritis is critically discussed. This handbook produced for the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) addresses the problem of designing systems that produce heat and cold using integrated systems. The idea of using a single heat pump system instead of separate heating and refrigeration systems is introduced. Typical applications such as bakeries, restaurants and grocery stores are discussed. The use of vertical bore-hole heat-exchangers as a source of heat in winter and as a source of cold in summer is recommended. The handbook shows how heating and cooling needs can be calculated and examines the energy balance of a ground-coupled heat pump system. The design and calculation of an integrated system is described. A practical example of a system realised in a motor way restaurant near Berne, Switzerland, is given. Here, a heat pump-based system produces cold for refrigeration and heat for space heating and hot water. To enable comparisons to be made between different systems, the notions of energy efficiency ratio for heating and cooling (GLZ) and performance efficiency ratio for heating and cooling (GAZ) are introduced. An appendix provides useful information on simulation tools, temperature characteristics, the calculation of hot water demands, heat recovery and details on the energy consumption of refrigeration and deep-freeze equipment.

This handbook was prepared primarily with the aim to provide information to experts in industry, authorities or research facilities engaged in criticality-safety-related problems that will allow an adequate and rapid assessment of criticality safety issues already in the planning and preparation of nuclear facilities. However, it is not the intention of the authors of the handbook to offer ready solutions to complex problems of nuclear safety. Such questions have to remain subject to an in-depth analysis and assessment to be carried out by dedicated criticality safety experts. Compared with the previous edition dated December 1998, this handbook has been further revised and supplemented. The proven basic structure of the handbook remains unchanged. The handbook follows in some ways similar criticality handbooks or instructions published in the USA, UK, France, Japan and the former Soviet Union. The expedient use of the information given in this handbook requires a fundamental understanding of criticality and the terminology of nuclear safety. In Vol. 1, ''Criticality and Nuclear Safety'', therefore, first the most important terms and fundamentals are introduced and explained. Subsequently, experimental techniques and calculation methods for evaluating criticality problems are presented. The following chapters of Vol. 1 deal i. a. with the effect of neutron reflectors and absorbers, neutron interaction, measuring methods for criticality, and organisational safety measures and provide an overview of criticality-relevant operational experience and of criticality accidents and their potential hazardous impact. Vol. 2 parts 1 and 2 finally compile criticality parameters in graphical and tabular form. The individual graph sheets are provided with an initially explained set of identifiers, to allow the quick finding of the information of current interest. In most advanced countries, virtually all criminal prosecutions now involve the presentation of scientific testimony. This has had the beneficial effect of diminishing the reliance of courts on eyewitness testimony and defendant confessions.

In 62 patients with facet syndrome a total of 205 joints were infiltrated, CT monitoring being used in all cases. Each facet joint was infiltrated with 0.3 ml bupivacaine and 0.8 ml methylprednisolone. The patients were divided into three groups. Group 1 consisted of 24 persons who had undergone lumbar disc surgery, group 2 of 23 patients with spondylarthrosis of the facet joints, and group 3 of 15 patients who had undergone lumbar disc surgery but hat additional spondylarthrosis. Very good results were defined as pain relief for longer than 4 weeks, good results as pain relief for up to 4 weeks and poor results as brief pain relief or none at all. In 27 patients facet infiltration was performed for the purpose of diagnosis. Results were significantly in group 2 than in group 1. In group 3 results were better than in group 1, but worse than in group 2. These differences were not statistical by significant. Seven patients in the diagnostic group had no pain relief, and facet syndrome was excluded. (orig.) [Deutsch] Bei 62 Patienten mit lumbalem Facettensyndrom wurden insgesamt 205 Zwischenwirbelgelenke (Facettengelenke) perkutan CT-gesteuert infiltriert. Je Gelenk wurden 0,3 ml Bupivacain und 0,8 ml Methylprednisolon intraartikulaer infiziert. Die Patienten wurden in 3 Gruppen unterteilt. Die 1. Gruppe umfasste 24 Patienten mit Postnukleotomiesyndrom, die 2. Gruppe 23 Patienten mit spondylarthrotischen Veraenderungen, die 3. Gruppe 15 bandscheibenoperierte Patienten mit zusaetzlicher Spondylarthrose. In Gruppe 2 fanden sich signifikant bessere Ergebnisse als in Gruppe 1. Gute Resultate ergab auch die dritte Gruppe, sie waren jedoch nicht signifikant besser als die der Gruppe 1. Die sorgfaeltige Auswahl der Patienten ist fuer den Erfolg der Behandlung entscheidend. Die Infiltrationsbehandlung der Zwischenwirbelgelenke hat nahezu keine Nebenwirkungen. The SINUS project intended to support building availability by regular maintenance, to reduce environmental pollution and waste production during the building life, to save natural resources, and to draw up a practical manual for this purpose. the findings were supported by tests on pilot plants and selected reference systems. [German] Primaeres Ziel des SINUS Projektes war es, die umweltgerechte Herstellung von nutzerorientierter Verfuegbarkeit von Gebaeuden durch eine nachhaltige Instandhaltung zu unterstuetzen, Umweltbelastungen waehrend der Betriebs-/Gebrauchsphase zu reduzieren, Stoffstroeme zu verringern, natuerliche Ressourcen zu schonen und die Ergebnisse in einem Handbuch des 'Integrierten Gebaeudeinstandhaltung und Umweltschutz Management Systems' abzubilden (siehe Schlussbericht Kapitel 2). Um die Praxistauglichkeit der Forschungsergebnisse zu gewaehrleisten, wurden diese staendig durch die Umsetzung an Pilotanlagen und ausgewaehlten Referenzsystemen evaluiert (siehe Schlussbericht Kapitel 5.3, 5.5). Es konnte einerseits detailliert dargelegt werden, dass sich erhebliche Synergieeffekte bei der Integration von Instandhaltung und Umweltschutz erzielen lassen (siehe Schlussbericht Kapitel 4,5). Andererseits wurde deutlich, dass Instandhaltung an sich angewandter Umweltschutz ist. Es wurden Methoden, Werkzeuge und systematische Vorgehensweisen entwickelt, die nachweislich nicht nur zu einer Verringerung des Material- und Energieverbrauches in einzelnen Phasen des Lebenszyklus fuehren, sondern vor allem zur Nachhaltigkeit der Nutzung, insbesondere zur Lebensdauerverlaengerung von Gebaeuden bzw. zur Nutzungsdauerverlaengerung einzelner Elemente des technischen Sachsystems Gebaeude, angewendet werden koennen. Based on the principles of rational continuum mechanics and electrodynamics (see Truesdell and Toupin in Handbuch der Physik, Springer, Berlin, 1960 or Kovetz in Electromagnetic theory, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2000), we present closed-form solutions for the mechanical displacements and stresses of two different magnets. Both magnets are initially of spherical shape. The first (hard) magnet is uniformly magnetized and deforms due to the field induced by the magnetization. In the second problem of a (soft) linear-magnetic sphere, the deformation is caused by an applied external field, giving rise to magnetization. Both problems can be used for modeling parts of general magnetization processes. We will address the similarities between both settings in context with the solutions for the stresses and displacements. In both problems, the volumetric Lorentz force density vanishes. However, a Lorentz surface traction is present. This traction is determined from the magnetic flux density. Since the obtained displacements and stresses are small in magnitude, we may use Hooke's law with a small-strain approximation, resulting in the Lamé- Navier equations of linear elasticity theory. If gravity is neglected and azimuthal symmetry is assumed, these equations can be solved in terms of a series. This has been done by Hiramatsu and Oka (Int J Rock Mech Min Sci Geomech Abstr 3(2):89-90, 1966) before. We make use of their series solution for the displacements and the stresses and expand the Lorentz tractions of the analyzed problems suitably in order to find the expansion coefficients. The resulting algebraic system yields finite numbers of nonvanishing coefficients. Finally, the resulting stresses, displacements, principal strains and the Lorentz tractions are illustrated and discussed.

MRI has gained an undisputed place in the evaluation of malignant bone tumors, not only for verifying results of conventional radiography and clarifying differential diagnoses; it has also become increasingly important for the assessment of the malignant/benign nature of the tumor, its growth rate, definition of adequate sites for biopsy, local preoperative staging, and evaluation of the response to chemotherapy. However, several pitfalls have to be observed regarding choice of technical parameters (coils, sequences, imaging planes), tissue differentiation, and tumor staging. When staging malignant tumors, critical aspects which have to be observed are tumor extension, integrity of the cortical bone, soft tissue components, infiltration of a joint or neurovascular bundle. The use of contrast agents provides important additional information but can also give rise to misinterpretations. Thus, all features of a tumor have to be observed in order to establish a final diagnosis. Particular difficulties can occur with the interpretation of MR images of osteomyelitis, osteoid osteoma, stress and insufficiency fractures, bone infarcts, myositis ossificans, hemangiomas, and aneurysmal bone cysts. The hip joint is the largest joint in the human body and consequently, its evaluation by diagnostic imaging is highly important. This includes imaging of hip joint arthroplasty, which is used to avoid joint immobility following a wide spectrum of diseases, such as end-stage degenerative disease, avascular necrosis of the femoral head or post-traumatic fractures. Conventional radiography is still the standard imaging modality for the evaluation of hip arthroplasty both directly following surgery and for periodical follow-up. In the majority of cases conventional radiography enables adequate assessment of early and late complications that can arise following hip arthroplasty, such as loosening, prosthetic or periprosthetic fracture, luxation, infection and soft tissue calcification. If the diagnosis cannot be established by means of radiography, advanced imaging methods such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with or without injection of contrast media, may provide additional information. This is particularly true for the depiction of inflammatory processes. Regardless of the imaging modality used patients' clinical symptoms must also be taken into account in order to establish the correct diagnosis. (orig.) Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, multisystemic disease. The characteristic feature is persistent inflammatory synovitis. The knee joint is commonly involved with synovial hypertrophy, chronic effusion, and frequently ligamentous laxity. Pain and swelling behind the knee may be caused by extension of inflamed synovium into the popliteal space (Baker`s cyst). Plain radiographs of the knee joint remain the basic radiological procedure, although early in the disease they might not provide significant changes. Sonography sufficiently reveals synovial fluid and Baker cysts, but cannot be recommended for evaluation of synovial proliferations or pannus formation. Computer tomography has only limited indications and may be used for the evaluation of subtle erosive lesions or the quantitation of osteoporotic changes. Magnetic resonance imaging has shown excellent visualization of cartilage, fluid, synovium and soft tissues and is the method of choice for the demonstration of early affection and the evaluation of panus activity and therapy control. With daministration of contrast agents (gadolinium), dynamic studies may demonstrate inflammatory activity. Modern MR sequences, such as T1 SE `fat sat` or magnetization transfer, further improve the discrimination of cartilage, pannus and synovial fluid. (orig.) Limb swinging in elephants and giraffes and implications for the reconstruction of limb movements and speed estimates in large dinosaurs

Full Text Available Speeds of walking dinosaurs that left fossil trackways have been estimated using the stride length times natural pendulum frequency of the limbs. In a detailed analysis of limb movements in walking Asian elephants and giraffes, however, distinct differences between actual limb movements and the predicted limb movements using only gravity as driving force were observed. Additionally, stride frequency was highly variable. Swing time was fairly constant, but especially at high walking speeds, much shorter than half the natural pendulum period. An analysis of hip and shoulder movements during walking showed that limb swinging was influenced by accelerations of hip and shoulder joints especially at high walking speeds. These results suggest an economical fast walking mechanism that could have been utilised by large dinosaurs to increase maximum speeds of locomotion. These findings throw new light on the dynamics of large vertebrates and can be used to improve speed estimates in large dinosaurs. Geschwindigkeiten gehender Dinosaurier, die fossile Fährten hinterlassen haben, wurden als Produkt aus Schrittlänge und natürlicher Pendelfrequenz der Beine abgeschätzt. Eine detaillierte Analyse der Beinbewegungen von gehenden Asiatischen Elefanten und Giraffen offenbarte allerdings klare Unterschiede zwischen den tatsächlichen Extremitätenbewegungen und den Bewegungen, die zu erwarten wären, wenn die Gravitation die einzige treibende Kraft darstellte. Zudem erwies sich die Schrittfrequenz als hochgradig variabel. Die Schwingzeit der Gliedmaßen war recht konstant, aber besonders bei hohen Gehgeschwindigkeiten viel kürzer als die halbe natürliche Pendelperiode der Extremitäten. Eine Analyse der Bewegungen der Hüft- und Schultergelenke während des Gehens zeigte, daß das Schwingen der Gliedmaßen durch Beschleunigungen dieser Gelenke beeinflußt wurde, insbesondere bei hohen Gehgeschwindigkeiten. Erfrierungsschaeden, die in China endemische Kashin-Beck-Erkrankung, aber auch Rattenbissverletzungen gleiche aetiologische Ursachen haben. Die Lokalisationen der Veraenderungen sind allerdings unterschiedlich. Erfrierungen treten vorwiegend akral auf und befallen nebeneinanderliegende Gelenke. Die Kashin-Beck-Erkrankung ist dagegen diffuser verteilt. Bei all diesen Krankheitsbildern koennen sich im weiteren Verlauf Sekundaerarthrosen entwickeln. Aufgrund von Magnetresonanztomographien kann eine 'Akutdiagnose' gestellt werden. Dies koennte in Zukunft eine therapeutische Beeinflussung des Krankheitsverlaufes erlauben. (orig.)

This article describes the architecture of a project aiming to implement a DIN EN ISO 9001 quality management system in a radiological department. It is intended to be a practical guide to demonstrate each step of the project leading to certification of the system. In a planning phase resources for the implementation of the project have to be identified and a quality management (QM) group as core team has to be formed. In the first project phase all available documents have to be checked and compiled in the QM manual. Moreover all relevant processes of the department have to be described in so-called process descriptions. In a second step responsibilities for the project are identified. Customer and employee surveys have to be carried out and a nonconformity management system has to be implemented. In this phase internal audits are also needed to check the new QM system, which is finally tested in the external certification audit with reference to its conformity with the standards. (orig.) PASSOLAR is an interactive program for microprocessors permitting to carry through a computer evaluation of parts of buildings designed for passive solar energy use. It follows the methods described in the 'Passive Solar Design Handbook, Volume Three' (7). Users are to be enabled to calculate the monthly values for the heating load, its solar fraction and the auxiliary heating load as easily as possible. These calculations are not only possible for 94 different types of solar energy supply systems in winter gardens and by direct and indirect solar radiation but also for many other systems varying more or less from the supply systems. The INTERREG Rhine-Maas action program (IRMA) was the result of the co-initiative 'INTERREG IIC' of the European Union. It consisted of approximately 150 projects. One of those projects was the 'Lahn project', presented in this handbook. Its duration was restricted to the years 2000 to 2001. The EU sponsored the project with 50% of the costs on planning and 25% on the constructional work, according to financial guidelines. The cofinancing was guaranteed by the Hessian Department of Environment, Agriculture and Forestry as part of the state program 'Ecological Streams'. Clients supported subprojects with shares ranging from 20% to 0%, relative to their financial capacity. The scientific investigation was realised by a research group, which developed a framework plan for flood protection, in close cooperation with the Departments of Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Economics and Traffic (Section III), and the Federal Bureaus of Environment Marburg and Wetzlar, Section IV of the Giessen Government Office. Please refer to Fig. 1 for members of this research group and their tasks. The catchment area of the Lahn River covers 5,964 km{sup 2}. Approximately, 4,500 km{sup 2} are located in Hesse. The Lahn River is a typical low mountain range river. With its culminant point being at 680 m above sea level, 20% of the area is located 400 m above sea level. The level of mouth is 60 m above sea level. The land use in the catchment area consists of 26.3% arable farmland, 21.1% grassland, 41.8% woodland and 8.7% urban settlement, and 3% sealed area. The permeability is mostly low (Fig. 3). The morphological classification derived in Tab 2 shows a surprising result. Against common expectations of low mountain range rivers, a large section of the Lahn River and most of the lower stream sections of its tributaries are only slightly inclined with a slope of 0 permille to 3 permille. Therefore, it was particularly favourable for water retention in meadows. Middle course sections (3-10 permille), upper course sections (10-100 permille), and steep sections (>100 permille), which are predominantly in notched valleys, can also be found, as typical for low mountain ranges. These areas are less compatible for water retention in meadows. The construction of flood retention basins is recommended. (orig.) [German] In den Jahren 2000 und 2001 wurde von einer Projektgruppe unter Leitung des Fachgebietes Wasserbau und Wasserwirtschaft der Universitaet Kassel im Rahmen der Gemeinschaftsinitiative INTERREG IIC und des Aktionsprogramms IRMA der Europaeischen Union, das Projekt 'Vorbeugender Hochwasserschutz im hessischen Einzugsgebiet der Lahn' (Einzugsgebietsgroesse rd. 4500 km{sup 2}) bearbeitet. Ziel des Projektes war es, in einem wissenschaftlichen Teil ein Hochwasserschutzkonzept des natuerlichen Wasserrueckhaltes ohne grosse Hochwasserrueckhaltebecken zu entwickeln und parallel dazu in 9 Teilprojekten Erfahrung mit der Umsetzung zu sammeln. Die hydrologische und hydraulische Effektivitaet, die Raumwirksamkeit und die Umweltvertraeglichkeit sollten geprueft und eine monetaere Bewertung durchgefuehrt werden. Die Ergebnisse werden in diesem zusammenfassenden Bericht dargestellt. Dazu wurden systematisch die Handlungsvorgaben der drei Strategien 'Natuerlicher Wasserrueckhalt', 'Technischer Hochwasseschutz' und 'Weitergehende Hochwasservorsorge' optimiert. Durch eine integrative Bearbeitung war es moeglich, insbesondere das Retentionspotential in der Gewaesserrenaturierung und in der Talauennutzung, aber auch in Siedlungsgebieten, quantitativ und teilweise monetaer zu erfassen. Breiten Raum nahm auch die Untersuchung der Umweltvertraeglichkeit ein. Als Ergebnis laesst sich feststellen, dass als ueberoertliche Massnahmen der Wasserrueckhalt in Gewaesser und Aue, die Flaechennutzungsaenderung ausserhalb von Ortslagen und der Hochwasserrueckhalt in den Nebentaelern bevorzugt verwirlicht werden sollten. An lokalen Massnahmen werden das Freihalten ueberschwemmter Flaechen von der Bebauung, an das Hochwasser angepasstes Bauen bzw. Nutzen, der Wasserrueckhalt in Siedlungsgebieten, die Vorbeileitung, lokale Schutzmassnahmen und eine Einuebung der Verhaltensvorsorge mit dem im Rahmen dieses Projektes weiterentwickelten Hochwasservorhersagemodells empfohlen. Die Wasserstaende werden dadurch deutlich abgesenkt. Fuer das 100-jaehrige Hochwasser z.B. am Pegel Marburg um 10 cm, am Pegel Leun um 15 cm und am Pegel Kalkofen um 54 cm. Die Wasserstaende der Rheinhochwasser werden in sehr viel geringerem Umfang reduziert. (orig.)

Full Text Available My critical observation “Down-to-earth is imperative” concerning the “Landschaftsökologische Raumgliederung Deutschlands” (landscape-ecological regionalisation of Germany; Schröder et al. 2006, published in this journal in 2009 (Weller 2009, received a reply by Winfried Schröder (Schröder 2011, 2012 in which he underlines the scientificity of the method applied in his regionalisation approach and stresses its superiority compared to a more observational empiricism. The reply closes with the remarks that the critic “has not understood the statistical method which underlies the landscape-ecological regionalisation” and that his “alternative approach does not satisfy fundamental criteria of scientific work”. I have not postulated an “alternative approach” at all; I have simply contrasted Schröder’s regionalisation with a number of facts which everybody who has ever dealt with landscapes in situ can observe. Numerous examples are able to show that the regionalisation published by Schröder has in fact very little to do with the actual conditions in the field. Unfortunately, Schröder’s reply does not consider this evidence, not with a single sentence. The missing plausibility test does not seem to be a problem for the authors of this regionalisation. This is not a unique case, but an especially striking example for the kind of uncritical data analysis frequently applied in science disciplines today where the real objects get out of sight. The findings resulting from such an approach are very much in danger of being totally inadequate as a basis for practical applications – which is, after all, explicitly sought by their authors. It was my objective to point out this danger. If there had been any need for another proof of the topicality of the observation of “down-to-earth is imperative”, the distance to reality of this reply is ample evidence for this.

Eine Talo-Navikulare-Instabilitaet ist ein haeufiges sekundaeres Zeichen bei stattgehabter Laesion des Spring-Ligaments und der Tibialis-posterior-Sehne. Bei Versagen der konservative Therapie ist eine Operation mit korrigierender Osteotomie der knoechern fixierten Fehlstellung in Kombination mit Band- und Sehnenrekonstruktion der goldene Standard. Auch hier stellt die belastete stehende Roentgenuntersuchung den Standard fuer Follow-up-Untersuchungen und Kontrollen dar. Zusaetzlich sind haeufig MRI- und CT-Untersuchungen zur Diagnose von Sehnen- und Bandverletzungen sowie intraossaerer Fissuren und Frakturen notwendig. (orig.)

Full Text Available [english] Within two years the Faculty of Medicine Dresden introduced a quality management system (QMS for educational processes. The system underwent a certificational procedure and was certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000. The QMS is based on a manual describing all educational processes. It serves visualization of these processes, identification of links between them and a clear definition of responsibilities. All involved employees of Faculty of Medicine can use the manual to optimize and improve the educational system. Leadership-, core- and supporting processes are described. Procedure instructions and further applicable documents are included. The manual is accessible via Intranet to all employees and "clients" of the Faculty of Medicine. The QMS is a leadership instrument. It relies on the vision of the Dresden Faculty of Medicine which defines short and long term goals and strategies to reach them. Certification procedure was completed with handing over of the certificate to the dean. It is valid for three years and the Faculty of Medicine will be under yearly supervision of certification agency. [german] Nach zweijähriger Einführungszeit führte die Medizinische Fakultät Dresden als erste medizinische Fakultät Deutschlands ein Qualitätsmanagementsystem (QMS für die Lehre ein und ließ es nach der DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 Norm zertifizieren. Das QMS beruht auf einem Handbuch, welches die wesentlichsten mit der Lehre verbundenen Prozesse beschreibt. Es dient der klaren Prozessvisualisierung, Identifikation der Vernetzungen zwischen den Abläufen und einer ebenso klaren Definition der Verantwortlichkeiten mit Verbindlichkeitscharakter. The attempt is made to systematize the diversity of discourse analysis, with its different historical roots and fields of research in the social sciences, even though the focus is mainly on FOUCAULT's approach. Thus, the handbook has to be understood as an important step towards a insertion of discourse analysis into social science. Although there are unavoidable contradictions between the articles—almost because of the open theoretical foundations—the handbook characterizes, as a whole, discourse analysis as a heterogeneous strategy of research rather than as a stringent method. With this approach, it can be a helpful guide for the reader’s own research projects. However, if one is looking for a precise method, the investment of time in discourse analysis could be wasted. Zusaetzlich erfolgten Dosismessungen und Hochkontraststudien an einem adaptierten Hochkontrastphantom (Catphan, Phantom Laboratories) im Vergleich zur Niedrigdosis- und Standarddosis-CT. Ergebinsse: Die Untersuchungen kleinerer Gelenke wie Hand-, Sprung-, Ellbogen- und Kniegelenk lieferten eine diagnostische Bildqualitaet (Scoremittelwerte 3-4) bei einer applizierten Dosis im Bereich der einer Niedrigdosis-CT. Dagegen war die Bildqualitaet der Hueftgelenks- und Wirbelsaeulenuntersuchungen trotz Dosiserhoehung um 85% eingeschraenkt (Scorewerte 2-3) und die der Schultergelenksuntersuchungen von schlechter Qualitaet (Score 1). Die Bilddaten der Hochkontraststudien zeigten in der xy-Achse eine der CT vergleichbare Hochkontrastaufloesung (9 LP/cm). Schlussfolgerung: Die vorlaeufigen Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Bildqualitaet der ISO-C-3D-Untersuchungen von peripheren Gelenken von diagnostischer Qualitaet ist. Am Hueftgelenk und am Stammskelett ist die Bildqualitaet nicht adaequat und erscheint bisher nicht ausreichend zur Frakturdiagnostik. (orig.)

diskoligamentaeren Komplexes war in der Gruppe der funktionsgestoerten Gelenke die sMRT der cMRT ueberlegen (Sensitivitaet sMRT 85%, cMRT 76%), waehrend sich bei den Probanden kein signifikanter Unterschied zeigte (Sensitivitaet sMRT 97,4%, cMRT 98,3%). Die in der sMRT und cMRT ermittelten Funktionsdaten korrelierten signifikant untereinander sowie auch mit den entsprechenden achsiographischen Referenzwerten (r=0,90). In der sMRT stellte sich die durchschnittliche Diskus- und Kondylusmobilitaet 6% bzw. 10% hoeher als in der cMRT (p=0,001) bei leicht hoeherer Varianz (v=0,043 vs 0,38) dar. Die HKN-Werte stimmten in beiden MRT-Verfahren und mit der Achsiographie mit jeweils r=0,94 am besten ueberein. Schlussfolgerung: Die Cine-MRT ist in ihrer Genauigkeit mit der Achsiographie vergleichbar und stellt als dynamische Untersuchung eine wertvolle Ergaenzung zur konventionellen statischen MRT dar. This supplement contains a technical paper on background values of trace elements in soils. Background values were compiled in topsoils, subsoils and subsurface of sixteen trace elements. The evaluations are based on data from the Geological Surveys, Land environmental Authorities and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources. Another new technical paper is concerned with the maintenance of the productivity of forest soils with the use of wood and biomass. While the demand for wood increases, the technical possibilities of harvesting and processing have evolved. ] Die ankylosierende Spondylitis (AS) gilt als Prototyp der Spondylarthropathien, welche mit einer Praevalenz von 2% zu den haeufigsten rheumatischen Erkrankungen gerechnet werden. Die Spondylarthropathie umfasst die 5 Entitaeten AS, reaktive Arthritis, Psoriasis arthropathica, enteropathische Arthritis bei Morbus Crohn und Colitis ulcerosa und die undifferenzierte Spondylarthropathie. Bei 99% der Patienten mit AS sind die ersten pathologischen Befunde an den Sakroiliakalgelenken zu finden. Die zur Diagnose einer AS geforderten Roentgenbefunde treten erst mit einer Latenz von 5-9 Jahren nach Beginn der klinischen Symptome in Erscheinung. Mit Hilfe der MRT der Sakroiliakalgelenke lassen sich sowohl chronisch-entzuendliche Veraenderungen (Erosionen, Sklerosierungen, Knochenbruecken) als auch akut-entzuendliche Veraenderungen (Synovitiden, Kapsulitiden, Osteitiden) sicher nachweisen und bezueglich ihrer Chronizitaet und Akuitaet graduieren. Enthesitiden der Ligamenta interossea des Spatium retroarticulare gehoeren zum Bild der AS. Eine Spondylodiszitis (Andersson 1937) kann als entzuendliche und als nichtentzuendliche Form (transdiskaler Ermuedungsbruch) auftreten. Zur Ankylosierung fuehrende Entzuendungen der Facetten- und der kostospinalen Gelenke sind fuer die AS typisch. Veraenderungen der Wirbelkoerper finden sich als Spondylitis anterior (Romanus 1952), posterior und marginalis. Charakteristisch fuer alle Spondylarthropathien sind darueberhinaus asymmetrische Synovitiden an den grossen Gelenken vor allem der unteren Extremitaet (Gonarthritis, Coxitis, Tarsitis, periphere Oligoarthritis), die Fibroostitis rheumatica (pelvine Enthesitis, Calcaneopathia rheumatica) und die Peri- und Synchondritiden der Symphysis pubica und der Synchondrosis sternalis. The present volume IX/5a represents a further addition to the series of Encyclopedia on radiodiagnostics of the escophagus and respiratory systems, the respiratory tract, and the mediastinum. The section on 'Pulmonary Tuberculosis' containing excellent illustrations was compiled with ample and objective criticism by H. Blaha. The pathologic, radiologic, and clinical aspects of 'Sarcoidosis' were effectively treated by W. Schermuly and H. Behrend who produced a comprehensive review that will remain authoritative for several years to come and will serve as an excellent reference source. The chapter on 'Lymphogranulomatosis of the Thoracic Organs' by M. Loew takes the entire region of the body into consideration and summarizes the current state of knowledge. With his extensive article on 'Tumors of the Chest Wall,' V. Schneider has rendered a great service not only to radiologists but also to all specialists who must concern themselves with diagnostic problems involving the thorax and its organs. The topographic approach to all tumors and a critical differential diagnostic evaluation of the X-ray findings are of assistance in practical clinical work. All of the articles report on the current knowledge of radiologic, pathologic-anatomic, and clinical aspects of the specific disorders or disease groups. Reiter, der Psoriasis oder chronischer Monoarthritiden, wie der chronischen Gicht zu beobachten sind, haben nicht selten ihre Manifestation am Sprunggelenk. Seltenere entzuendlich chronische Affektionen hingegen koennen jedoch auch bei enteropathischen Arthritiden, granulomatoesen Erkrankungen, wie der Tuberkulose oder Sarkoidose, beobachtet werden. Auch chronisch verlaufende Pilzaffektionen koennen zu atypischen Bildern fuehren. Chronisch degenerative Erkrankungen entstehen am Sprunggelenk fast ausschliesslich sekundaer. Praedisponierend sind hier angeborene oder erworbene Fehlhaltungen sowie chronische Veraenderungen auf Basis abgelaufener oder repetitiver Traumen. Chronische Veraenderungen sind auch bei der Haemophilie im Rahmen des Blutergelenkes zu erwarten. [German] Zielsetzung: Evaluation der Befunde nach indirekter MR-Arthrographie bei Patienten mit autologer osteochondraler Transplantation. Patienten und Methoden: 10 konsekutive Patienten mit einer Mosaik-Plastik wurden drei, 6 und 12 Monate nach dem Eingriff mittels indirekter MR-Arthrographie untersucht. Das MR-Protokoll bei 1,5T beinhaltete neben nativen PD- und T{sub 2}-gewichteten TSE-Sequenzen mit und ohne Fett-Suppression T{sub 1}-gewichtete, fettsupprimierte SE-Sequenzen vor und unmittelbar nach Kontrastmittelgabe sowie nach Bewegung des Gelenkes. Die Bildanalyse wurde gemeinsam von zwei Radiologen durchgefuehrt und beinhaltete die Auswertung der Signalintensitaet (SI) und Integritaet des knoechernen Zylinders ebenso wie der Knorpeloberflaeche, das Vorhandensein eines Knochenmarkoedems und eines Gelenkergusses. Ergebnisse: Drei Monate nach dem Eingriff zeigte sich in allen Faellen in der T{sub 2}-TSE-Sequenz ein ausgepraegtes Knochenmarkoedem auf Empfaenger- und Donorseite, korrespondierend zu einem deutlichem Signalintensitaetsanstieg nach Kontrastmittelgabe. Die Grenzzone zwischen dem Transplantat und dem originaerem Knochen zeigte eine erhoehte SI nach drei und 6 Monaten in der T{sub 2}-TSE-Sequenz sowie nach i.v. Gd-DTPA-Gabe. Eine Transplantatdislokation wurde in keinem Fall beobachtet. Als Zeichen der Vitalitaet des osteochondralen Transplantats normalisierte sich das Marksignal in der T{sub 1}-SE-Sequenz in den meisten Faellen nach 6 bzw. 12 Monaten. Die indirekte MR-Arthrographie war dem Nativ-Scan ueberlegen bei der Beurteilung der knorpeligen Ueberdeckung des Transplantats. In allen Faellen zeigte sich eine komplette Ueberdeckung des knoechernen Zylinders mit Gelenkknorpel. emulsions--to study cosmic-ray induced stars. Maury wrote definitive reviews on the emulsion technique (use of high-density visual detectors) in 1941 in Reviews of Modern Physics and then an article entitled "Nuclear Emulsions" in the Handbuch der Physik of 1958. He did many experimental investigations related to cosmic rays and particle properties after the war when he joined NRL. Using emulsion-chamber techniques and high-altitude exposures, Maury measured and verified saturation of relativistic rise in ionization, a measurement of helium and proton flux at high rigidity, and accurate measurements of secondary-to-primary ratio (Li, Be, B/CNO); with his colleagues he did one of the best measurements of neutral pion life time. He also did important measurements of properties of heavy baryons. My association with Maury started when I joined University of Maryland's High Energy group in 1961, a time when Maury had a very active group working in particle physics and cosmic rays using nuclear emulsions and was starting a bubble-chamber group. (Some of the members were Bernard Hildebrand, Bert Stiller, Rein Silberberg, C. H. Tsao, and Robert Glasser.) There was active interaction between George Snow (University of Maryland) and the NRL group, both studying properties of high-energy particles with nuclear emulsions and bubble chambers. I was a consultant with the NRL group for some ten years. In 1960s, Maury investigated the ramifications and limitations of supernova theories for the origin of cosmic rays and discussed the production of high-energy neutrinos and gamma rays from these sources. He was one of the active members of the DUMAND project to study high-energy neutrinos. With Rein Silberberg he explored the capabilities of such a project. Maury's group made seminal contributions on quantitatively exploring isotope ratios (using isotopes to determine the time lag between explosion and acceleration in supernova sources--to suggest the importance of FIP in injection), the

Dietmar Fürst (Berlin), who has already published in this series three articles on the foundation of Königsberg Observatory, now presents the first part of the history of the Königsberg heliometer, an instrument which is famous since it was used by Bessel to determine the trigonometric parallax of 61 Cygni. Fürst informs us about the purchase and the putting in operation of the instrument, which was endangered by Fraunhofer's death and delayed by (unavoidably counterproductive?) administrative activities. Reinhold Haefner, astronomer at Munich Observatory, and Rolf Riekher, optician in Berlin, have joined forces to present some pioneers of stellar spectroscopy in "the astro-spectroscopic researches by Fraunhofer and Lamont". It is well known that Fraunhofer observed the solar spectrum with high enough resolution to detect the Fraunhofer lines, but it is less known that he also observed bright planets and fixed stars at the Munich Observatiory, with the assistance of its director Soldner. A publication of 1823 gives only a short summary of this stellar work, and Fraunhofer's early death, three years later, was possibly the cause that no detailed article ever appeared. the most important, because from these faster moving systems one could calculate orbits and in some cases determine masses. Wulff and Charles collaborated in the Fourth Catalogue of Orbits of Visual Binary Stars, (US Naval Observatory, 1983), the last paper version of this catalogue and a standard reference for many years. Even the more recent versions of the catalogue list more orbits by Wulff than by any other calculator. Wulff was the author of some 150 research papers, plus several articles in the popular literature and encyclopedias. He was the author, co-author, or editor of nine books. His early monograph Doppelsterne (Goldmann, 1971) was recrafted and translated into English to become Double Stars (D. Reidel, 1978). This was the standard binary star text for many years and continues to serve as the definitive text on the subject. Those familiar with Wulff's style of writing will know why it was referred to as the "Terse Tome," but it contained all relevant information. Wulff collaborated with one of us (Augensen) to translate the German Handbuch für Sternfreunde into the English Compendium of Practical Astronomy (Springer-Verlag, 1994). In addition to his professional pursuits, Wulff was an acknowledged chess master, and he authored Das praktische Schachbuch (Practical Chess Book), which had thirteen printings in the period 1968-1981. He was also an adept pianist, and was especially fond of playing Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninov. Wulff's role as an educator was no less significant. Wulff enjoyed teaching courses at all college levels. As a lecturer for the Harlow Shapley Lecture Program of the AAS, Wulff visited a number of smaller colleges and universities across the U.S., delighting audiences with his wit, charm, and knowledge. One of Wulff's favorite activities was running the public viewing sessions at Sproul Observatory, in which he used the large 24-inch refractor to observe the moon, planets, double stars, nebulae, and star clusters. Aus Slowenien, aus Dolenjsko, der Region südöstlich von Emona - Ljubljana, wo die noch lebendige Tradition der reichen Eisenzeit angenommen werden dürfte, sowie aus Poetovio- Ptuj stammen die Becher. Von diesen dürften der Götter-Becher von Črnelo (jetzt im Nationalmuseum in Ljubljana und der gravierte Becher mit dem griechischen Trinkspruch von Novo mesto- Bršljin (jetzt im Kunsthistorischen Museum in Wien in keinem Handbuch über römisches Glas fehlen. Diese beiden sind als dem Kultus fest verbunden zu betrachten, obwohl jedenfalls vorerst dem individuellen Kultus der libatio, zusammen mit der Magie am Tische, welche den Genuss von Getränken begleitet, besonders den Genuss von Wein mit einem Wunsch nach Wohlbefinden, mit einem Trinkspruch also. Bis dahin ist es nur ein kleiner Schritt zum Totenkult. Die Efeu-Ranke des Kantharos von Poetovio - Ptuj kann so mit den beiden erwähnten Dimensionen dieser Vorstellung gut in Verbindung stehen. Dagegen wird hier die Meinung vertreten, die Gravur der Flasche von Ptuj deute mehr darauf hin, dass sie ursprünglich als eine Art von Widmung an die Götter von Alexandrien gedacht gewesen sei und zugleich zu einem Souvenir aus dem Land am Nil geworden sei, da es jedenfalls ursprünglich eine spezielle landeseigene Flüssigkeit, ein möglicherweise wohlriechendes Öl oder eine Pomade, enthalten hat. Wein z.B. wäre dazu nicht eigenartig genug gewesen. Beim Darstellen der Keramikware wird vorerst der schon alten Feststellung, dass an Sigillata immer wieder Motive vorkommen, die dem Weingenuss angepasst sind, beigestimmt. Zu bestimmten Phasen einiger Werkstätten gehören ferner über das Bildfeld verteilte Glückwunsch-Inschriften, aber auch die jedenfalls nicht mehr verstandenen Motive, die von den ursprünglich als eine Art Souvenir gedachten Zirkusbechern stammen. zu visuellen Materialien stattgefunden. Inspiriert durch Modelle der Kunst- und Filmwissenschaft, der Medienwissenschaft und der Cultural Studies gibt es jetzt auch im deutschsprachigen Raum erste sozial-, erziehungs- und medientheoretische Versuche, visuelles Material in Forschungskontexten methodisch ernster zu nehmen. Ausdruck davon sind Publikationen wie das Handbuch «Foto- und Filmanalyse in der Erziehungswissenschaft» (Ehrenspeck/Schäffer 2003, die Tagungsdokumentation «Selbstausdruck mit Medien: Eigenproduktionen mit Medien als Gegenstand der Kindheits- und Jugendforschung» (Niesyto 2001 oder verschiedene Beiträge im Online-Magazin «MedienPädagogik» über «Methodologische Forschungsansätze» (Ausgabe 1/2001. Begonnen hatte dieser Prozess insbesondere in der Jugendforschung. So öffneten sich Teilbereiche der Jugendforschung auch für visuelle Methoden der Erhebung und Dokumentation. Zu erwähnen sind in diesem Zusammenhang u.a. Foto-Portraits im Rahmen der Shell-Jugendstudie von 1992, einzelne Projekte im Rahmen des DFG-Schwerpunktprogramms «Pädagogische Jugendforschung» (1980-1986 sowie Projekte der medienpädagogischen Praxisforschung auf der Basis von Eigenproduktionen mit Video (z.B. Projekt «VideoCulture – Video und interkulturelle Kommunikation». Diese Eigenproduktionen können als Forschungsdaten genutzt werden; es lassen sich über sie auch weitere verbale Äusserungen anregen. Vor allem dann, wenn die sprachlichen Kompetenzen der Subjekte gering bzw. noch wenig ausgeprägt sind (Kinder, Migranten, Menschen aus benachteiligenden sozialen Milieus, ist es wichtig, non-verbale Äusserungsformen anzubieten (vgl. das aktuelle EU-Projekt «Chicam». In einer Zeit, in der Wahrnehmung und Welterleben von Kindern und Jugendlichen stark von Medienerfahrungen geprägt sind, eröffnet Forschung auf der Grundlage von Eigenproduktionen einen ergänzenden bzw. alternativen Zugang zu deren Lebenswelten.
