commentators and Stanley Kubrick predicted, but we understand the cosmos and our humble place in it much better. This issue of Physics Education sees contributions on a variety of space themes - Monica Grady, Curator of Meteorites at London's Natural History Museum and world expert on martian meteorites, has contributed a fascinating article, and we consider Time, artificial gravity and the use of computer-controlled telescopes. Few would dispute that the greatest changes to our teaching methods have almost all been due to the rise in available computing power. Computers control telescopes so that with active optics, telescopes in arrays, and with image enhancement techniques we can see far beyond the limits of simple optical apparatus. The internet allows us to control experiments and telescopes on opposite sides of the globe, and allows teachers to get rapid feedback on their students' progress. Interactive whiteboards, electronic conferencing ... the list goes on. We have unprecedented access to information and powerful means of communicating with each other. For good or for bad, the information age brings us too much information, and devalues it. Our students are not awed by our knowledge - they are more critical, harder to impress and more easily bored. A good teacher is one who knows this, who listens to their students and cares. The inspirational teacher is as important as ever. Time, whatever that is (see John Taylor's article), moves on, and change is an inevitable consequence. No living, dynamic system is immune to the effects of time, and our education systems should be living and dynamic. We are not striving for the perfect system, so that we can fix it in tablets of stone; we are working out the best ways to teach our students, today. I hope that this issue of Physics Education helps you to do just that. Editor: Kerry Parker

further result of developments that took place during the second world war, ultrasound scanners were developed which enabled the foetus to be viewed during pregnancy using non-ionizing radiation. Another important development utilizing non-ionizing radiation was nuclear magnetic resonance, with the potential for magnetic resonance imaging being realized in the 1980s and subsequently becoming a major diagnostic tool. There are a number of exciting developments in medical physics which may in the future contribute to a greater under- standing of how the body functions. These include the use of SQUID (superconducting quantum interference devices) magnetometers and terahertz imaging. However, it remains to be seen what impact they will have in the medical field. A century ago the medical physics profession did not exist. Today, however, thousands of individuals work in this speciality throughout the world. Over the last 50 years there has been a growth of international organizations concerned with the application of physics in medicine. See the Web Watch on page 507. There is lots of interest in medical physics, and there are always students who want to know more. If a student wants a career in medical physics they would be advised to follow a BSc in Physics or Biomedical Engineering with a specific medical physics postgraduate degree. Further details regarding career opportunities may be obtained from the Web Watch links or from the author. Physics Education would like to thank guest-editor Alan Piercy for assembling this series of useful, interesting and informative articles covering a wide range of applications of physics in medicine. These articles bring us right up to date and point the way of developments in the 21st century. 9. Comment on "Many-body localization in Ising models with random long-range interactions"

    Science.gov (United States)

Maksymov, Andrii O.; Rahman, Noah; Kapit, Eliot; Burin, Alexander L.

    2017-11-01

This Comment is dedicated to the investigation of many-body localization in a quantum Ising model with long-range power-law interactions r-α, relevant for a variety of systems ranging from electrons in Anderson insulators to spin excitations in chains of cold atoms. It has earlier been argued [arXiv:cond-mat/0611387 (2005); Phys. Rev. B 91, 094202 (2015), 10.1103/PhysRevB.91.094202] that this model obeys the dimensional constraint suggesting the delocalization of all finite-temperature states in the thermodynamic limit for α ≤2 d in a d -dimensional system. This expectation conflicts with the recent numerical studies of the specific interacting spin model of Li et al. [Phys. Rev. A 94, 063625 (2016), 10.1103/PhysRevA.94.063625]. To resolve this controversy we reexamine the model of Li et al. [Phys. Rev. A 94, 063625 (2016), 10.1103/PhysRevA.94.063625] and demonstrate that the infinite-temperature states there obey the dimensional constraint. The earlier developed scaling theory for the critical system size required for delocalization is extended to small exponents 0 ≤α ≤d . The disagreements between the two works are explained by the nonstandard selection of investigated states in the ordered phase in the work of Li et al. [Phys. Rev. A 94, 063625 (2016)10.1103/PhysRevA.94.063625].

At the NSREC, held annually in July, scientists and engineers from industry, academia, and government institutions present their latest research on radiation effects in materials, electronic devices, circuits, and systems. The conference is the primary forum for technical presentations in the area of radiation effects, with attendance from over 20 countries around the world. It is also an important venue for companies to present their latest products and where students, young graduates, and experienced professionals meet, share ideas, and plan new experiments. Indeed, NSREC has been at the heart of the radiation effects community for 50 years. This special issue consists of review articles summarizing the research that has been published over the past ten years on subjects of interest to this community. The range of topics covered attests to our diversified and rich background.

  11. Opinion Summarizationof CustomerComments

    Science.gov (United States)

    Fan, Miao; Wu, Guoshi

Web 2.0 technologies have enabled more and more customers to freely comment on different kinds of entities, such as sellers, products and services. The large scale of information poses the need and challenge of automatic summarization. In many cases, each of the user-generated short comments implies the opinions which rate the target entity. In this paper, we aim to mine and to summarize all the customer comments of a product. The algorithm proposed in this researchis more reliable on opinion identification because it is unsupervised and the accuracy of the result improves as the number of comments increases. Our research is performed in four steps: (1) mining the frequent aspects of a product that have been commented on by customers; (2) mining the infrequent aspects of a product which have been commented by customers (3) identifying opinion words in each comment and deciding whether each opinion word is positive, negative or neutral; (4) summarizing the comments. This paper proposes several novel techniques to perform these tasks. Our experimental results using comments of a number of products sold online demonstrate the effectiveness of the techniques.

This blunt assessment of lecturer-training courses appeared as part of João Magueijo's Forum article on programmes designed to help UK academics learn how to teach undergraduates ("Cargo-cult training" December 2009 pp16-17). Judging from the comments his article garnered online, complaints about such courses are not unique to the UK, although there is also another side to the story.

The article gives a short description of the machine and some of its building and commissioning story. It is a great achievement to reach the highest energy in the world from a particle accelerator and NAL have done it in a style which is all their own.

Physics...fun? 'Physics is Fun' - it's a book, a course, a summer school... Physics, with a reputation for hard maths, nonsensical equations and crazy teachers living with a permanent bad hair day, yes, PHYSICS IS FUN! Maybe if we say it often enough our students will believe us. PHYSICS IS FUN! Keep saying it, and try to believe it. But we are scientists, and we have to look at the evidence and acknowledge the truth: when most people recall the fun times they had at school-how many think about their physics classes? Try asking them. Let's face it - although our students enjoy our exciting demonstrations, the well-structured development of concepts in our classes, and the cooperative and supportive atmosphere of our classrooms and laboratories, even when they find that their physics teachers are the most kind, considerate and approachable of people, even then, when we've done all we can to make physics pleasant, fun and exciting, our students have to fathom out physics... and that can be hard! 'Physics isn't fun in the trivial sense, it's hard work: but you get a fantastic sense of achievement when you make progress.' This is my counsel to most young people who come to discuss whether or not to opt for physics. We try our best to make the material accessible and interesting, but at the end of the day, struggling with something that intially you can't do, but eventually you can do, is part of developing in physics. But what about the teachers? November's meeting of physics teachers from across Europe, Physics on Stage, featured many of the best innovations in physics teaching from the 22 countries which sent delegations (see News). It is probably no surprise, but we need to take note that the most popular stands, talks and lectures were the ones which were most fun. And there is lots of fun to be had doing physics. Whether it is toys, music, poetry, or simply talking about the symmetry in particle physics-the most popular stands, workshops and lectures were those where teachers could enjoy the fun in physics again. Even physics teachers are human! It is so easy to get bogged down in the drudge of everyday teaching and forget the students, let alone ourselves. But if you think back to the good teachers you had at school - weren't they the ones who were enjoying themselves, and maybe not perfectly organized. There has to be a moment at which a good teacher says 'I'm going to do this, because I want to... it's fun physics!' No other justification is needed. Our new look for 2001 So here is the first issue of the new-look Physics Education - and we sincerely hope that you enjoy it. The Editorial Board and the publishing team have been working hard for the past few months to keep the best of the old format, but to make a fresher, more user-friendly publication. As incoming Editor I must acknowledge the excellent work done by Ken Dobson and Jill Membrey, the outgoing team. It is a tough act to follow, but a challenge I am privileged to undertake. As a physics teacher I know how difficult it can be to stay inspired and up-to-date, so as Editor of Physics Education I want to support your professional development as much as possible. Starting with support for student teachers (see Starting Out), through to teachers in charge of equipment and budgets (see Technical Trimmings and Reviews): we want to share good practice. Finally, let's laugh at ourselves-don't miss Signing Off: a humorous look at physics teaching. I've really enjoyed working on this new format, and I hope that you enjoy the read. Please give us lots of feedback and send in your own contributions. I'm very pleased that our first issue has two special features: to me they represent the potential and the purpose of physics education. Sport is an exciting growth area of science in which increasing numbers of students want to understand the basic laws of motion and the application of sophisticated technology; and communicating physics - well that's not just fun, it's fundamental. Virtual reality - whose reality? There is an old joke about a farmer who wanted to improve his milk yields and employed an engineer, a psychologist and a physicist to make suggestions. They all went away for a month and came back with their proposals. The engineer had measured the size of the milking stalls, the ambient temperature and the milking process. She suggested a modest rise in ambient temperature and an alteration in the pumping equipment. The psychologist decided to paint the stalls green and play a tape-recording of birdsong to the cows to make them feel more content and release their milk more easily. The physicist explained that he had decided to look at things more fundamentally: 'Let us assume that the cow is a sphere' ... he began. And that's the joke. Some people think that this is the funniest thing out - a physicist can't recognize a cow when they see one. What troubles me is that I didn't get the joke straight away. I am so used to the language and the often-ludicrous assumptions in physics that it did not seem particularly strange or funny. What did you think? The joke, for me, illustrates the essence of our problem in physics teaching. In a very real way, physics is about another world. It isn't about the real world in which ordinary people live, and they know it. Physics has its own language, its own laws and its own values. Depleted uranium has been in the news of late. It is interesting to compare the casual way in which physics teachers have discussed the possibilitiy that one atom of uranium can kill someone with the shock-horror reporting of this fact in the press. We are caricatured, sometimes for good reason, being callous, calculating, cold people - out of touch with the things that really matter. And then there's that other 'real world' - of really tough people who make serious money. Our friends who work out in the worlds of commerce and industry like to mutter, with some superiority, that teachers would never survive in the real world. So here we are, buffered from the 'reality' of commerce by kind managers, left to teach equations at the expense of moral standards ... Excuse me! Physics is the only subject that confronts real reality head on. Physics is all about how this world, this Universe, this reality works. Moral laws, government legislation and theories of economics are all well, and sometimes good, but they take place within this space we call Our Universe. Physics is real This issue of Physics Education contains lots of excellent suggestions for practical work - demonstrations of what happens, and suggestions for investigations. I hope that readers will find them useful and maybe share some good ideas of their own. We are dealing with stuff that actually happens, and that is what makes physics both significant and attractive. The joke I really hate runs 'If it moves it's biology, if it smells it's chemistry and if it doesn't work it's physics'. This is rubbish: gravity always works, in my experience, physics never gets it wrong. In the classroom, maybe a piece of equipment is broken, or the technician forgot the batteries, but we can never say truthfully that 'the experiment didn't work'. Virtual physics Last week a school governor challenged me to justify the cost of so much laboratory space and equipment when, nowadays, so much can be done using computers. Probably the best 'virtual physics' currently available is on CD-ROM. In this issue of Physics Education we have concentrated on CDs for our review section. There is lots of good material out there which can enhance our teaching with wonderful images, immediate feedback for students, and the possibility of continuously monitored differentiated work but, as I explained to the governor, I don't want to teach virtual physics - physics is very firmly, fairly and squarely in this real world (which may, of course, approximate to a sphere ... .). EditorDr Kerry Parker

    Dickter, Cheryl L

    2012-01-01

An online diary study was used to examine the individual and situational variables that influence non-targets' verbal and nonverbal reactions and responses to sexually prejudiced remarks. Results indicated that anti-gay comments were extremely prevalent in a college setting and resulted in a range of reactions and behaviors. Confrontation of the perpetrator was predicted by the perceived offensiveness of the comment, perceived social pressure to confront, and the number of close same-sex attracted friends. Additionally, those who confronted felt more satisfied with their responses than those who did not confront. Implications for future research and prejudice reduction strategies are discussed.

    Lins, Harry F.

    2006-05-01

Soroosh Sorooshian's editorial in the 18 April issue of Eos (87(16) 2005) is a timely reminder of the need for unambiguous guidelines governing the interactions between government scientists and the media. His comments implicitly recognize the central role that science plays in a modern democratic society, which includes informing policy at the highest levels of government and educating the general public about the world we inhabit. Federal research scientists, who constitute approximately 15 percent of the AGU's U.S. membership, have a unique public responsibility. They would welcome a consistent policy for the review and approval of publications, oral presentations, and media communications. An example of the value and success that such a policy can have to both science and the nation is evident in the operations of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). For more than a century, the USGS has had clear policies and procedures for ensuring the communication of accurate, high-quality, and impartial scientific information. These policies and procedures are set forth in the USGS Manual under sections entitled ``Approval by the director for outside publication and oral presentation,'' ``Review of USGS publications and abstracts of oral presentations for policy-sensitive issues,'' and ``News release and media relations policy.'' These policies are available online at http:// www.usgs.gov/usgs-manual/500/500-9.html (.../500-8.html and .../500 5.html).

  19. Commenting on health: a framing analysis of user comments in response to health articles online.

    Science.gov (United States)

Holton, Avery; Lee, Nayeon; Coleman, Renita

    2014-01-01

Public health officials have continually urged journalists and other members of the news media to ease off health frames that focus on individuals and to instead promote broader societal frames. Although some scholarly research has reinforced these pleas, none has examined the interplay between frames of health news coverage and resulting public comments. The current online environment invites such an analysis, allowing news organizations to post articles online and the public to comment on those articles. Using a content analysis, this study reveals thematic frames in online health stories may drive down gain-oriented responses, while episodic frames may prompt the public to share more personal comments. Furthermore, the findings examine other textual factors--gain and loss frames and mobilizing information--that may be driving the volume and frames of user comments to health stories online.

  14. Comment Clauses in English and Arabic: A Comparative Analysis

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Nidhal Jalil Hamzah

    2017-09-01

Full Text Available The present study sheds light on comment clauses in English and Arabic. In English, comment clauses refer to those clauses which comment either on the content of the main clause or the attitude of the speaker towards the way of speaking. Arabic comment clauses are non- functional clauses which occur either between two parts of the same speech or two independent speeches connected by meaning in order to illustrate, emphasize or improve certain meanings that the speaker wants to convey. This study is divided into three sections. The first section tackles comment clauses in English with reference to definition, structure, position, types and pragmatic functions. Following the same way, the second section deals with comment clauses in Arabic. The third section concentrates on the similarities and differences in both languages: English and Arabic. The study aims to investigate comment clauses in English and Arabic, and to draw a comparison in order to show the similarities and differences between them. The analysis shows that English comment clauses can take the finite or non-finite forms whereas Arabic clauses can take the form of nominal, verbal, interrogative or conditional sentence starting with one of the particles such as Waw الواو or Fa'a الفاء which are considered as the widely used particles in comment clauses. Also, both English and Arabic comment clauses lack a syntactic connection with the main clause.

  15. Elevator talk: observational study of inappropriate comments in a public space.

    Science.gov (United States)

    Ubel, P A; Zell, M M; Miller, D J; Fischer, G S; Peters-Stefani, D; Arnold, R M

    1995-08-01

We conducted a study to determine the type and frequency of inappropriate comments made by hospital employees while riding hospital elevators. Four observers rode in elevators at five hospitals, listening for any comments made by hospital employees that might be deemed inappropriate. All potentially inappropriate comments were reviewed by the research team and were classified as inappropriate if they met at least one of the following criteria: violated patient confidentiality, raised concerns about the speaker's ability or desire to provide high-quality patient care, raised concerns about poor quality of care in the hospital (by persons other than the speaker), or contained derogatory remarks about patients or their families. We observed 259 one-way elevator trips offering opportunity for conversation. We overheard a total of 39 inappropriate comments, which took place on 36 rides (13.9% of the trips). The most frequent comments (18) were violations of patients confidentiality. Next most frequent (10 comments) were unprofessional remarks in which clinicians talked about themselves in ways that raised questions about their ability or desire to provide high-quality patient care. Other comments included derogatory statements about the general quality of hospital care (8) and derogatory remarks about patients (5). Physicians were involved in 15 of the comments, nurses in 10, and other hospital employees in the remainder. Inappropriate comments took place with disturbing frequency in the elevator rides we sampled. These comments did not exclusively involve violations of patient confidentiality, but encompassed a range of discussions that health care employees must be careful to avoid.

  6. Long-term avifaunal survey in an urban ecosystem from southeastern Brazil, with comments on range extensions, new and disappearing species

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Marcelo Ferreira de Vasconcelos

    2013-01-01

Full Text Available Urban avifaunal surveys in Brazil have been increasing in recent years, despite none of them consisting of long-term studies indicating events of regional colonization and/or missing species. Here, we present an avifaunal survey of an urbanized ecosystem in southeastern Brazil, carried out along 30 years, on the campus of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais, municipality of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais state. Inside the campus there is a forest reserve adjacent to a small lake. The inventory was mainly based on opportunistic records from the years 1982-2013. We recorded 134 bird species along the past 30 years. However, the present avifauna is composed of 123 species. A total of 97 species was recorded in the reserve, including the forest fragment and the adjacent lake, of which 44 were exclusive to this area. Nevertheless, the majority of the current species found in the study area is forest independent (N = 51 or semi-dependent (N = 46. There is a predominance of insectivorous (N = 43 and omnivorous (N = 29 species. The current avifauna is represented by 15 migratory species, which can be found both in the urbanized area and in the forest remnant. However, the majority of the species (N = 75 is resident in the area, including three invasive species, whereas few others (N = 28 are occasional visitors. The remaining species were probably introduced in the area. There were 11 cases of disappearing species, which include typical forest birds, and also species typical of wetlands and rural environments. We also comment on recent colonization and on the possible effects of isolation on birds. Probably, the majority of forest-dependents are on the brink of extinction in the forest fragment. Thus, the species' list provided here can be useful as a database for monitoring long-term effects of urbanization on this bird community.

  7. Student Practice Evaluation Form-Revised Edition online comment bank: development and reliability analysis.

    Science.gov (United States)

Rodger, Sylvia; Turpin, Merrill; Copley, Jodie; Coleman, Allison; Chien, Chi-Wen; Caine, Anne-Maree; Brown, Ted

    2014-08-01

The reliable evaluation of occupational therapy students completing practice education placements along with provision of appropriate feedback is critical for both students and for universities from a quality assurance perspective. This study describes the development of a comment bank for use with an online version of the Student Practice Evaluation Form-Revised Edition (SPEF-R Online) and investigates its reliability. A preliminary bank of 109 individual comments (based on previous students' placement performance) was developed via five stages. These comments reflected all 11 SPEF-R domains. A purpose-designed online survey was used to examine the reliability of the comment bank. A total of 37 practice educators returned surveys, 31 of which were fully completed. Participants were asked to rate each individual comment using the five-point SPEF-R rating scale. One hundred and two of 109 comments demonstrated satisfactory agreement with their respective default ratings that were determined by the development team. At each domain level, the intra-class correlation coefficients (ranging between 0.86 and 0.96) also demonstrated good to excellent inter-rater reliability. There were only seven items that required rewording prior to inclusion in the final SPEF-R Online comment bank. The development of the SPEF-R Online comment bank offers a source of reliable comments (consistent with the SPEF-R rating scale across different domains) and aims to assist practice educators in providing reliable and timely feedback to students in a user-friendly manner. © 2014 Occupational Therapy Australia.

  3. Classification of Helpful Comments on Online Suicide Watch Forums

    Science.gov (United States)

Williams, Amanda G.; Ramos-Morales, María; Haye, Laura; Holaday, Tara; Cerel, Julie

    2017-01-01

Among social media websites, Reddit has emerged as a widely used online message board for focused mental health topics including depression, addiction, and suicide watch (SW). In particular, the SW community/subreddit has nearly 40,000 subscribers and 13 human moderators who monitor for abusive comments among other things. Given comments on posts from users expressing suicidal thoughts can be written from any part of the world at any time, moderating in a timely manner can be tedious. Furthermore, Reddit's default comment ranking does not involve aspects that relate to the “helpfulness” of a comment from a suicide prevention (SP) perspective. Being able to automatically identify and score helpful comments from such a perspective can assist moderators, help SW posters to have immediate feedback on the SP relevance of a comment, and also provide insights to SP researchers for dealing with online aspects of SP. In this paper, we report what we believe is the first effort in automatic identification of helpful comments on online posts in SW forums with the SW subreddit as the use-case. We use a dataset of 3000 real SW comments and obtain SP researcher judgments regarding their helpfulness in the contexts of the corresponding original posts. We conduct supervised learning experiments with content based features including n-grams, word psychometric scores, and discourse relation graphs and report encouraging F-scores (≈ 80 – 90%) for the helpful comment classes. Our results indicate that machine learning approaches can offer complementary moderating functionality for SW posts. Furthermore, we realize assessing the helpfulness of comments on mental health related online posts is a nuanced topic and needs further attention from the SP research community. PMID:28736770

  6. Do Online Comments Influence the Public's Attitudes Toward an Organization? Effects of Online Comments Based on Individuals' Prior Attitudes.

    Science.gov (United States)

Sung, Kang Hoon; Lee, Moon J

    2015-01-01

The authors investigated the effects of reading different types of online comments about a company on people's attitude change based on individual's prior attitude toward the company. Based on Social Judgment Theory, several hypotheses were tested. The results showed that the effects of online comments interact with individuals' prior attitudes toward a corporation. People with a strong negative attitude toward a corporation were less influenced by other's online comments than people with a neutral attitude in general. However, people with a prior negative attitude were more affected by refutational two-sided comments than one-sided comments. The results suggest that the effects of user generated content should be studied in a holistic manner, not only by investigating the effects of online content itself, but also by examining how others' responses to the content shape or change individuals' attitudes based on their prior attitudes.

The goal of this work is threefold. First, we give an expression of the most general five point integral on M{sub 0,n} in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. Second, we choose a special kinematics that transforms the polynomial form of the scattering equations to a linear system of symmetric polynomials. We then explain how this can be used to explicitly evaluate arbitrary point integrals on M{sub 0,n}. Third, we comment on the recently presented method of companion matrices and we show its equivalence to the elimination theory and an algorithm previously developed by one of the authors.

  8. Comment on ``Pairing interaction and Galilei invariance''

    Science.gov (United States)

    Arias, J. M.; Gallardo, M.; Gómez-Camacho, J.

    1999-05-01

A recent article by Dussel, Sofia, and Tonina studies the relation between Galilei invariance and dipole energy weighted sum rule (EWSR). The authors find that the pairing interaction, which is neither Galilei nor Lorentz invariant, produces big changes in the EWSR and in effective masses of the nucleons. They argue that these effects of the pairing force could be realistic. In this Comment we stress the validity of Galilei invariance to a very good approximation in this context of low-energy nuclear physics and show that the effective masses and the observed change in the EWSR for the electric dipole operator relative to its classical value are compatible with this symmetry.

  11. Are Final Comments in Web Survey Panels Associated with Next-Wave Attrition?

    2016-12-01

Full Text Available Near the end of a web survey respondents are often asked whether they have further comments. Such final comments are usually ignored, in part because open-ended questions are challenging to analyse. We explored whether final comments are associated with next-wave attrition in survey panels. We categorized a random sample of final comments in the Longitudinal Studies for the Social Sciences (LISS panel and Dutch Immigrant panel into one of eight categories (neutral, positive, six subcategories of negative and regressed the indicator of next-wave attrition on comment length, comment category and socio-demographic variables. In the Immigrant panel we found shorter final comments (55 words with decreased next-wave attrition relative to making no comment. Comments about unclear survey questions quadruple the odds of attrition and “other” (uncategorized negative comments almost double the odds of attrition. In the LISS panel, making a comment (vs. not and comment length are not associated with attrition. However, when specifying individual comment categories, neutral comments are associated with half the odds of attrition relative to not making a comment.

  12. Comment Topic Evolution on a Cancer Institution's Facebook Page.

Our goal was to identify and track the evolution of the topics discussed in free-text comments on a cancer institution's social media page. We utilized the Latent Dirichlet Allocation model to extract ten topics from free-text comments on a cancer research institution's Facebook™ page between January 1, 2009, and June 30, 2014. We calculated Pearson correlation coefficients between the comment categories to demonstrate topic intensity evolution. A total of 4,335 comments were included in this study, from which ten topics were identified: greetings (17.3%), comments about the cancer institution (16.7%), blessings (10.9%), time (10.7%), treatment (9.3%), expressions of optimism (7.9%), tumor (7.5%), father figure (6.3%), and other family members & friends (8.2%), leaving 5.1% of comments unclassified. The comment distributions reveal an overall increasing trend during the study period. We discovered a strong positive correlation between greetings and other family members & friends (r=0.88; p<0.001), a positive correlation between blessings and the cancer institution (r=0.65; p<0.05), and a negative correlation between blessings and greetings (r=-0.70; p<0.05). A cancer institution's social media platform can provide emotional support to patients and family members. Topic analysis may help institutions better identify and support the needs (emotional, instrumental, and social) of their community and influence their social media strategy.

  13. Assuring the quality of interpretative comments in clinical chemistry.

The provision of interpretative advice on laboratory results is a post-analytic activity and an integral part of clinical laboratory services. It is valued by healthcare workers and has the potential to prevent or reduce errors and improve patient outcomes. It is important to ensure that interpretative comments provided by laboratory personnel are of high quality: comments should be patient-focused and answer the implicit or explicit question raised by the requesting clinician. Comment providers need to be adequately trained and qualified and be able to demonstrate their proficiency to provide advice on laboratory reports. External quality assessment (EQA) schemes can play a part in assessing and demonstrating the competence of such laboratory staff and have an important role in their education and continuing professional development. A standard structure is proposed for EQA schemes for interpretative comments in clinical chemistry, which addresses the scope and method of assessment including nomenclature and marking scales. There is a need for evidence that participation in an EQA program for interpretative commenting facilitates improved quality of comments. It is proposed that standardizing goals and methods of assessment as well as nomenclature and marking scales may help accumulate evidence to demonstrate the impact of participation in EQA for interpretative commenting on patient outcome.

  15. Detecting spam comments on Indonesia’s Instagram posts

    Science.gov (United States)

    Septiandri, Ali Akbar; Wibisono, Okiriza

    2017-01-01

In this paper we experimented with several feature sets for detecting spam comments in social media contents authored by Indonesian public figures. We define spam comments as comments which have promotional purposes (e.g. referring other users to products and services) and thus not related to the content to which the comments are posted. Three sets of features are evaluated for detecting spams: (1) hand-engineered features such as comment length, number of capital letters, and number of emojis, (2) keyword features such as whether the comment contains advertising words or product-related words, and (3) text features, namely, bag-of-words, TF-IDF, and fastText embeddings, each combined with latent semantic analysis. With 24,000 manually-annotated comments scraped from Instagram posts authored by more than 100 Indonesian public figures, we compared the performance of these feature sets and their combinations using 3 popular classification algorithms: Na¨ıve Bayes, SVM, and XGBoost. We find that using all three feature sets (with fastText embedding for the text features) gave the best F 1-score of 0.9601 on a holdout dataset. More interestingly, fastText embedding combined with hand-engineered features (i.e. without keyword features) yield similar F 1-score of 0.9523, and McNemar’s test failed to reject the hypothesis that the two results are not significantly different. This result is important as keyword features are largely dependent on the dataset and may not be as generalisable as the other feature sets when applied to new data. For future work, we hope to collect bigger and more diverse dataset of Indonesian spam comments, improve our model’s performance and generalisability, and publish a programming package for others to reliably detect spam comments.

  16. Reading between the lines: faculty interpretations of narrative evaluation comments.

    Science.gov (United States)

Ginsburg, Shiphra; Regehr, Glenn; Lingard, Lorelei; Eva, Kevin W

    2015-03-01

Narrative comments are used routinely in many forms of rater-based assessment. Interpretation can be difficult as a result of idiosyncratic writing styles and disconnects between literal and intended meanings. Our purpose was to explore how faculty attendings interpret and make sense of the narrative comments on residents' in-training evaluation reports (ITERs) and to determine the language cues that appear to be influential in generating and justifying their interpretations. A group of 24 internal medicine (IM) faculty attendings each categorised a subgroup of postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) and PGY2 IM residents based solely on ITER comments. They were then interviewed to determine how they had made their judgements. Constant comparative techniques from constructivist grounded theory were used to analyse the interviews and develop a framework to help in understanding how ITER language was interpreted. The overarching theme of 'reading between the lines' explained how participants read and interpreted ITER comments. Scanning for 'flags' was part of this strategy. Participants also described specific factors that shaped their judgements, including: consistency of comments; competency domain; specificity; quantity, and context (evaluator identity, rotation type and timing). There were several perceived purposes of ITER comments, including feedback to the resident, summative assessment and other more socially complex objectives. Participants made inferences based on what they thought evaluators intended by their comments and seemed to share an understanding of a 'hidden code'. Participants' ability to 'read between the lines' explains how comments can be effectively used to categorise and rank-order residents. However, it also suggests a mechanism whereby variable interpretations can arise. Our findings suggest that current assumptions about the purpose, value and effectiveness of ITER comments may be incomplete. Linguistic pragmatics and politeness theories may shed

Full Text Available Social networks’ popularity has enabled new approaches in customer-business relationships, particularly in regard to tourism. Much of this is due to the global character of social networks, and the fact that tourists can freely discuss their experiences, making these comments available to others instantly. References found in literature considered the determinants, motivations and adoption of other tourists’ evaluations, and how they can be helpful to peers. These studies have been compiled based on quantitative information, particularly regarding rankings based on the number of comments and reviewers that companies have on content management sites. However, tourist evaluations go beyond just assigning a rating—there are also unstructured comments, and these have not been the object of much analysis. Thus, this work’s focus is on the analysis of the content of comments using the institutional Dineserv model, applied to restaurants and adapting it to social media.

    1996-05-01

Comments are given on the application of the Bogoliubov-Tyablikov approach to the bipolaron problem in a recent paper by Lakhno [Phys. Rev. B 51, 3512 (1995)]. This author believes that his model (1) is the translation-invariant adiabatic theory of bipolarons and (2) gives asymptotically exact solutions in the adiabatic limit while the other approaches are considered as either phenomenological or variational in nature. Numerical results by Lakhno are in contradiction with all other papers published on the subject because his model leads to much lower energies. Thus, the author concludes that bipolarons ``are more stable than was considered before.'' We prove that both the analytical and the numerical results presented by Lakhno are wrong.

    2014-01-01

On YouTube anti-smoking PSAs are widely viewed and uploaded; they also receive extensive commentary by viewers. This study examined whether such evaluative comments with or without uncivil expressions influence evaluations by subsequent viewers. Results showed PSAs with positive (i.e. anti-smoking) comments were perceived by smokers as more effective than PSAs with negative (pro smoking) comments. Smokers in the no comment condition gave the highest perceived effectiveness score to PSAs. Smokers’ readiness to quit smoking moderated the effect of comments on PSA evaluation. Smokers reading negative uncivil comments reported more negative attitude toward quitting and a lower level of perceived risk of smoking than those reading negative civil comments but positive civil and positive uncivil comments didn't elicit different responses. 4. Nuclear data and measurements series: Some comments on the effects of long-range correlations in covariance matrices for nuclear data

    Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDEWEB)

    Smith, D.L.

    1987-03-01

Attention is called to the considerable sensitivity of many uncertainty calculations to the magnitude of the long-ranged correlations which appear in covariance matrices. If such correlations do exist, they must be included in order to properly assess the impact of the uncertainties in the data. If, however, certain assumed long-range correlations are unrealistic, then analyses involving such correlation information are almost certain to produce misleading results. The issue is discussed in general terms, and its importance is illustrated by examples based in part on recent work from this laboratory. Some practical suggestions are offered for dealing with the matter of correlations in instances where the available information is incomplete. 23 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.

  5. Amphibian conservation: clarifications to comments from Andreone

Muths, Erin L.; Fisher, Robert N.

    2017-01-01

We appreciate the comments from Andreone (2016) regarding our proposed alternative strategy for addressing the amphibian crisis. Andreone recognizes the utility of an Incident Command System approach but doubts the feasibility of implementation at an international level. We stated in our original article, however, that ‘the feasibility of our suggestion is debatable, but our point is that radically different approaches are necessary to effectively manage the largest extinction event in modern history’ (Muths & Fisher, 2015). There are examples of where such top-down strategies are being applied; e.g. for the brown tree snake Boiga irregularis (Stanford & Rodda, 2007), and biosecurity planning for Micronesia and Hawaii (NAVFAC Pacific, 2016). Another example is presented by Andreone. In Madagascar a community-wide conservation plan has been developed complete with prioritization of specific actions (Andreone, 2016). As with any top-down strategy, challenges will surface, especially when making decisions that affect economics. We note this caveat in our article, and Andreone points out such issues in Madagascar, where there are mismatches in priorities between biodiversity conservation and civil needs. Our suggestion is that a new paradigm needs to be considered given the gravity of amphibian decline, and one option may be to take a global approach focusing on specific, major threats. Application of an Incident Command System would not necessitate competition with, or emasculation of, local conservation priorities or actions.

Under the Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) of 1995, Federal agencies are required to publish notice in the Federal Register concerning each proposed collection of information, including each proposed revised collection, and allow 60 days for public comment in response to the notice. This notice solicits comments on the correspondence survey that will allow Veterans an opportunity to provide anonymous feedback on how well the HEC addressed their letter. HEC will use this feedback to improve the correspondence processes. The goal of the Customer Modality Survey is to implement a survey process that allows the organization to be proactive in caring for Veterans prior to them receiving services.

Illusive comments of product or services are misleading for people in decision making. The current methodologies to predict deceptive comments are concerned for feature designing with single training model. Indigenous features have ability to show some linguistic phenomena but are hard to reveal the latent semantic meaning of the comments. We propose a prediction model on general features of documents using stacking with ensemble learning. Term Frequency/Inverse Document Frequency (TF/IDF) features are inputs to stacking of Random Forest and Gradient Boosted Trees and the outputs of the base learners are encapsulated with decision tree to make final training of the model. The results exhibits that our approach gives the accuracy of 92.19% which outperform the state-of-the-art method.

  14. Comment: compulsory licensing of patented pharmaceutical inventions: evaluating the options.

    Science.gov (United States)

    Reichman, Jerome H

    2009-01-01

In this Comment, the author traces the relevant legislative history pertaining to compulsory licensing of patented pharmaceuticals from the TRIPS Agreement of 1994 to the 2003 waiver to, and later proposed amendment of, article 31, which enables poor countries to obtain needed medicines from other countries that possess manufacturing capacity. The Comment then evaluates recent, controversial uses of the relevant legislative machinery as viewed from different critical perspectives. The Comment shows how developing countries seeking access to essential medicines can collaborate in ways that would avoid undermining incentives to innovation and other social costs attributed to compulsory licensing. It ends by defending the legality of recent measures taken to promote public health in developing countries, and by reminding developed countries that unilateral retaliation against such measures is demonstratably illegal under WTO foundational law and jurisprudence.

  15. Analysis of comments in a petition defending electronic cigarettes.

    2014-11-01

A 2009 petition opposing a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ban on electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) garnered international attention from e-cig users (vapers). Petitioners' comments described the perceived benefits of vaping. We conducted a qualitative and quantitative analysis of petitioners' comments. A sample of 200 petitioner names was sought in public records. Reviewers identified 13 major themes in a sample of comments, and themes related to current controversies were added. For each theme, software pattern-matching instructions (regular expressions) were developed and were used to scan comments. Agreement between reviewers and software was calculated; theme prevalence and clustering was ascertained. A total of 13,414 signatures and 8,285 comments from 50 states and 75 nations were collected in 6 months. Temporal patterns and name matches in public records suggest that most petitioners are authentic. Agreement between reviewers and software was moderate to high (κ = 0.4-0.8). Commonly cited themes were "e-cigs helped me quit" (34%), "a ban would be counterproductive" (15%), and "my health improved with e-cigs" (13%). Two clusters of themes emerged: the first combined comments about smoking cessation, health benefits, and smoking relapse that an e-cig ban would cause; the second combined themes that a "ban would be counterproductive," it would infringe on personal liberties, and it was motivated by government or industrial greed. People who cited mental health issues often mentioned avoiding withdrawal as a benefit of e-cigs. Early e-cig adopters were both frustrated and confused by discussion of a ban. They believed that e-cigs safely delivered nicotine and helped them quit smoking. © The Author 2014. 2015-11-01

We comment on the article ‘Wind-influenced projectile motion’ by Bernardo et al (2015 Eur. J. Phys. 36 025016) where they examine the trajectory of a particle that is subjected to gravity and a linear air resistance plus the influence from the wind. They find by using the Lambert W function that the particle's trajectory for a special angle, the critical angle {θ }{{C}}, between the initial velocity and the horizontal is part of a straight line. In this comment we will show that this result can be proved without using the Lambert W function which is not that well known to beginning students of physics.

  18. Online comments on smoking bans in psychiatric hospitals units.

    Science.gov (United States)

    Brown-Johnson, Cati G; Sanders-Jackson, Ashley; Prochaska, Judith J

    2014-01-01

Individuals with mental health concerns are disproportionately affected by and suffer the negative consequences of tobacco use disorder, perhaps because smoking has historically been part of psychiatry's culture. In the early 1990s, psychiatric inpatient facilities were exempted from U.S. hospital smoking bans, in response to public outcry with national media attention. Almost 2 decades later, the current study characterizes online conversation about psychiatric hospital smoking bans. Previous commenting studies have demonstrated commenting's negativity, documenting the "nasty effect" wherein negative comments color perceptions of neutral articles. Thus, we focused particular attention on cited barriers to implementing health-positive smoke-free policies. We collected online comments (N = 261) responding to popular media articles on smoking bans in inpatient psychiatry between 2013 and 2014 and conducted an inductive and exploratory qualitative content analysis. Verifying previous studies documenting the prevalence of negative commenting, of the comments explicitly supporting or refuting psychiatry smoking bans, there were over twice as many con comments (n = 44) than pro (n = 18). Many commenters argued for access to outdoor smoking areas and warned of patient agitation and risk posed to care workers. Identified content themes included psychiatric medication and negative side effects, broken mental health systems and institutions, denigration of the health risks of tobacco in the context of mental illness, typical pro-smoking arguments about "smokers' rights" and alternatives (including e-cigarettes), addiction, and stigma. The current findings provide a platform to begin to understand how people talk about mental health issues and smoking. Our analysis also raised complex issues concerning forces that impact U.S. patients with serious mental illness but over which they have little control, including medication, the U.S. health system, stigma, perceptions that

The results indicate that students’ comments relate to the teacher’s instruction and class management twice as commonly as to their personal characteristics (e.g. sense of humour.

  1. Exploring qualitative training reactions: individual and contextual influences on trainee commenting.

    Science.gov (United States)

Harman, Reanna Poncheri; Ellington, J Kemp; Surface, Eric A; Thompson, Lori Foster

    2015-05-01

Training reactions are the most common criteria used for training evaluation, and reaction measures often include opportunities for trainees to provide qualitative responses. Despite being widely used, qualitative training reactions are poorly understood. Recent trends suggest commenting is ubiquitous (e.g., tweets, texting, Facebook posts) and points to a currently untapped resource for understanding training reactions. In order to enhance the interpretation and use of this rich data source, this study explored commenting behavior and investigated 3 broad questions: who comments, under what conditions, and how do trainees comment? We explore both individual difference and contextual influences on commenting and characteristics of comments in 3 studies. Using multilevel modeling, we identified significant class-level variance in commenting in each of the 3 samples of trainees. Because commenting has only been considered at the individual level, our findings provide an important contribution to the literature. The shared experience of being in the same class appears to influence commenting in addition to individual differences, such as interest in the topic (Studies 1 and 2), satisfaction (Studies 2 and 3), and entity beliefs (Study 3). Furthermore, we demonstrated that item wording may have an impact on commenting (Study 3) and should be considered as a potential lever for training professionals to influence commenting behavior from trainees. Training professionals, particularly those who regularly administer training evaluation surveys, should be aware of nonresponse to open-ended items and how that may impact the information they collect, use, and present within their organizations. 2. The Potential for the Use of the Occupants’ Comments in the Analysis and Prediction of Building Performance

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Clare Dykes

    2012-01-01

Full Text Available The authors investigated the occupants’ perceptions of 47 commercial and institutional buildings worldwide. These investigations involved the personal distribution and collection of a questionnaire survey seeking the occupants' perceptions (scored on a 7-point scale of some 45 factors: Operational; Environmental (including temperature, air quality, lighting, and noise; Personal Control; and Satisfaction (including design, needs, comfort overall, productivity, and health. Occupants were also invited to comment on nine of these factors. While it has been suggested that in the ideal situation the occupants would have no complaints about their indoor environment, the aim here was to discover the real situation—in particular the proportion of occupants who were prepared to make a comment, the general nature of the comments (positive, negative, or balanced, and whether these correlated with the occupants’ perception scores. On average, 34 per cent of respondents took up the invitation to make a comment. As anticipated, the greater the number of positive comments, the better the perception score, and vice-versa. However, it appears that it only required around 20% of the comments to be positive for the perception score to exceed the mid-point of the seven-point scale, whereas 65% or more of negative comments were needed to go under that point. This paper details the nature of the correlation between the occupants’ comments and the corresponding scores for a range of building operational and indoor environmental factors and speculates on their potential for the analysis and prediction of building performance from the perspective of the occupants.

  5. Psychological disorders associated with rosacea: Analysis of unscripted comments

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Leah A. Cardwell

    2015-07-01

Full Text Available Background: Conditions affecting the face are particularly prone to causing psychological comorbidity; patients may be reluctant to inform their physician about their psychological distress. Unscripted comments could provide novel insight regarding the psychological impact of rosacea. Aim: To assess psychologically distressing aspects of rosacea reported in an informal medical setting. Methods: Random sample of 10% of 27,051 posts analyzed, 446 comments addressed psychological effects of rosacea. Comments analyzed for symptoms of depression, anxiety, low confidence/self-esteem, and aspects of rosacea which cause distress, including symptoms, lifestyle change and difficulty with treatments. Brand names were changed to generic equivalent. Results: Symptoms of depression (n = 44 and the desire to end life (n = 6 were mentioned, but no comments expounded on any suicide plan. Anxiousness (n = 7 and negative impact on confidence/self-esteem (n = 5 were mentioned. Symptoms, or clinical manifestations (n = 29, were the most frequently mentioned distress factor, followed by lifestyle change (n = 20. Patients also voiced difficulty with treatments (n = 15. Limitations: Online forums may provide patient perceptions that patients would not share with a doctor, but the sample may not be representative of all rosacea patients. Conclusions: Inquiring about psychological impact of rosacea might be helpful in identifying patients who would benefit from supportive psychological measures.

  6. Responding to reviewers' comments as part of writing for publication.

    Science.gov (United States)

    Happell, Brenda

    2011-01-01

The aim of this paper is to provide a resource for authors to help them in getting their work published. The focus is on dealing with, and responding to, the comments of reviewers. The importance to research of nurses writing for publication is widely acknowledged. However, a number of significant barriers to nurses actively engaging in this form of dissemination has been identified. Ways in which nurses can avoid the pitfalls that would make their manuscripts more likely to be rejected have been the subjects of published articles. Significantly less attention has been devoted to providing authors with methods to assist them in responding when their manuscripts are rejected or major revisions are requested. This article provides a brief overview of the process of editorial review. It offers a practical but structured approach to responding to reviewers' comments when undertaking major revisions and to preparing a rejected manuscript for resubmission to another journal. Authors frequently respond negatively to reviewers' comments and this may result in their being dissuaded from writing for publication. A structured approach to dealing with reviewers' comments may help nurses in making the requested revisions and increase their chances of publication. The publication of research findings and other scholarly work are important for the professional advancement of nursing. Strategies to overcome the barriers to writing for publication are essential to achieving this goal. Helping authors to respond positively to reviewer critique and to make the necessary changes are important steps in this process.
