Resumo em português O presente artigo relata o isolamento e identificação do palmitato, oleato e linoleato de sitosterila, sitosterol, estigmasterol, 3-O-β-D-galactopiranosídeo do sitosterol, 3-O-β-Dgalactopiranosídeo do estigmasterol, 3-O-β-D-glicopiranosídeo do sitosterol e uma mistura de ácidos anacárdicos (monoeno e dieno) do extrato etanólico de cascas do caule de Anacardium occidentale L., Anacardiaceae, bem como do sitosterol, estigmasterol, lupeol, β-amiri (mais) na, catequina e epicatequina do extrato etanólico do tegumento da castanha de caju in natura. Os extratos EtOH da casca e do tegumento foram avaliados quanto ao conteúdo de fenóis totais e atividade antioxidante. O extrato etanólico das cascas do caule apresentou maior conteúdo de compostos fenólicos e percentual de atividade antioxidante. Resumo em inglês This paper describes the isolation and identification of a mixture of sitosteryl ester derivatives of fatty acids (palmitic, oleic and linoleic), sitosterol, stigmasterol, sitosterol-3-O-β-galactopyranoside, stigmasterol-3-O-β-galactopyranoside, sitosterol-3-O-β-glucopyranoside and a mixture of anacardic acids (monoene and diene) from stem bark of Anacardium occidentale L., Anacardiaceae, as well as sitosterol, stigmasterol, lupeol, β-amyrin, catechin (mais) and epicatechin from in natura cashew nut testa. Ethanol extracts from stem bark and testa were analyzed for antioxidant activity and total phenol content. The ethanol extract from stem bark exhibited the maximum of antioxidant activity and phenol content.

Resumo em inglês From the hexane extract of barks of Tapirira guianensis were isolated and identified beta-sitosterol, 3beta-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-sitosterol, sitostenone and stigmast-4-en-6beta-ol-3-one. Besides these compounds six alkyl ferulates were obtained including a new one with an unusual odd alkyl chain, nonadecyl coumarate. All structures were determined by spectral data.

Triterpenos de Hyptis fasciculata Benth.

Resumo em português Partes aéreas do arbusto Hyptis fasciculata Benth. foram estudadas do ponto de vista químico. Após vários processos cromatográficos em coluna de gel de sílica, foi possível isolar um triterpeno livre (ácido betulínico), além de triterpenos em mistura (ácido ursólico com ácido betulínico e ácido ursólico com ácido oleanólico), esteróides em mistura (sitosterol e estigmasterol) e misturas de estigmasterol com ácido caféico e sitosterol com lignana. Tais substâncias foram identificadas por ressonância magnética nuclear de 1H e 13C. Resumo em inglês The species Hyptis fasciculata Benth. is a shrub that is still unknown by the chemical point of view. This species has been studied in our group using their aerial parts. After many cromatographic processes over silica gel column, it was possible to isolate free triterpene (betulinic acid) and triterpenes in mixture (ursolic acid with betulinic acid and ursolic acid with oleanolic acid), one steroid mixture (sitosterol and stigmasterol) and a mixture of steroid with cafei (mais) c acid (stigmasterol and cafeic acid) and with lignan (sitosterol and sesamin). These compounds were identified by nuclear magnetic ressonance 1H and 13C.

Resumo em inglês Phytochemical investigation of the hexane, ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts of roots and leaf stalks of Euterpe precatoria Mart. ("açaí"), afforded stigmast-4-en-6beta-ol-3-one (3); p-hydroxy benzoic acid (4); 3beta-O-D-glucopyranosyl-sitosterol (5); beta-sitosterol palmitate (6); mixtures of beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol (1 and 2), alpha-, beta-amirin and lupeol (7, 8 and 9), friedelin-3-one and 28-hydroxy-friedelin-3-one (10 and 11) and alpha-, beta-D-glucose (mais) (12, 13). Except for 1, 2 and 4, the other isolated constituents are described in the genus for the first time. Compounds 3 and 5 gave good results in the brine shrimp bioassay, which detects compounds with potential uses as antitumor agents, pesticides, etc..

Resumo em inglês From Humirianthera ampla, Icacinaceae, were isolated a phthalate, lupeol, β-sitosterol, glycosyl- sitosterol, one known annonalide diterpene and two new diterpenes named Humirianthol and Acrenol. Humirianthol and Acrenol were determined by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques to be 3 β, 20:14 β, 16-diepoxy-3 α, 15 α-dihydroxy-7-pimaren-19, 6 β-olide and 3 β, 20-epoxi-3 α, 15, 16-trihydroxy-7-pimaren-19, 6 β-olide, respectively. Acrenol has antimicrobial activity.

Resumo em inglês From hexane fraction of methanol extract of leaves of Tapirira guianensis (Anacardiaceae) were obtained lupeol, 24-methylenecycloartan-3-ol, phytol, α-amyrin, β-amyrin, sitosterol, sitostenone, glycosyl sitosterol, as well as sitosterol esterified with palmitic and stearic acids. Phytol, α-amyrin and β-amyrin esterified with fatty acids were also identified from same extract. The EtOAc extract besides the norisoprenoids (6S,7E,9S)-6,9-dihydroxy-megasti (mais) gma-4,7-dien -3-one 9-O-β-glucopyranoside and (6S,7E,9R)-6,9-dihydroxy-megastigma-4,7-dien-3-one 9-O-β-glucopyranoside also afforded kaempferol 3-O-rhamnoside, kaempferol 3-O-arabinofuranoside, quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside, and kaempferol. The structural elucidation of isolated compounds were based on UV, IR, MS, ¹H and 13C NMR data analysis.

Resumo em inglês The flowers of Stiffitia chrysantha Mikam(Asteraceae) contain eriodictiol, quercetin, luteolin and b-D-glycopyranosil-sitosterol. These compounds and its derivatives were identified by their 1H and 13C NMR, infra-red and mass spectra data. The heteronuclear 2D NMR were used to confirm the assignments of the proton and carbon chemical shifts, it was used to eliminate definitively the ambiguous correlation reported in the literature for C-5 and C-9 of quercetin and C-23 and C-25 of b-D-glycopyranosil-sitosterol.

Resumo em português A investigação fitoquímica das cascas do caule de Sterculia striata St. Hil. et Naudin, através de métodos cromatográficos, conduziu ao isolamento dos esteróides sitosterol, estigmasterol e sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glicopiranosídeo, além de quatro triterpenóides pentacíclicos, o lupeol, 3-β-O-acil lupeol, lupenona e ácido betulínico. As estruturas desses compostos foram identificadas por análise dos espectros de RMN ¹H e 13C e comparações com dados da (mais) literatura. Para determinação do teor de fenóis totais do extrato etanólico de S. striata utilizou-se o reativo Folin Ciocalteu, enquanto na avaliação da atividade antioxidante empregou-se o radical livre DPPH. Este é o primeiro trabalho descrevendo o estudo químico com as cascas do caule desta espécie. Resumo em inglês The phytochemical investigation of the stem bark of Sterculia striata St. Hil. et Naudin by chromatographic methods led to the isolation of sitosterol, stigmasterol and sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, besides pentacyclic triterpenoids, lupeol, 3-β-O-acyl-lupeol, lupenone and betulinic acid. The structures of these compounds were identified by ¹H and 13C NMR spectral data analysis and comparison with literature data. For determining of the phenolic content o (mais) f the etanolic extract of Sterculia striata we used the Folin Ciocalteu reagent, and for the evaluation of antioxidant activity, we utilized the DPPH free radical. This is the first work reporting the chemical study with the stem bark of this species.

Resumo em inglês This paper describes the chemical constituents isolated from aerial parts of the plant Galianthe brasiliensis. From a methanol extract, the iridoid glycosides asperuloside, deacetylasperuloside, mixture of Z- and E-6-O-p-coumaroylscandoside methyl ester, the triterpene ursolic acid and the steroids stigmasterol, campesterol, beta-sitosterol and 3-O-beta-glycopiranosyl sitosterol were isolated. The structures of the natural products were identified on the basis of spectral (mais) data, including 2D NMR experiments. The antiproliferative properties of the crude methanolic extract were investigated against a series of nine human cancer cell lines.

Resumo em inglês Phytochemical investigation of ethanolic leaves extracts of T. fagifolia led to the isolation of (+)-catechin, sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, α- and β-tocopherol, a mixture of lupeol, α- and β-amyrin, sitosterol and a mixture of glicosid flavonoids (CP-13). The structures of these compounds were identified by ¹H and 13C NMR spectral analysis and comparison with literature data. Absolute configuration of the catechin was determinate by circul (mais) ar dichroism. Antioxidant activity (EC50), evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhidrazyl (DPPH) assay system, decreased in the order: (+)-catechin > hydroalcoholic fraction > CP-13 > aqueous fraction > EtOH extract.

Resumo em inglês The chloroform extract of aerial parts of Ipomoea subincana was submitted to different chromatographic procedures which afforded methyl caffeate, ethyl caffeate, methyl 3,4-dimethoxycinnamate, lupeol, alpha-amyrin, beta-amyrin, 3-beta-O-beta-D-glycopiranosyl-sitosterol, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, scopoletin, aromadendrane-4beta,10alpha-diol, n-docosyl-cis-p-coumarate and n-icosyl-trans-p-coumarate, vanilin, cinamic acid and vanillic acid. However, from the ethyl aceta (mais) te extract besides quercetin and 3-O-beta-D-glycopiranosyl-quercetin were isolated methyl 4-O-E-feruloyl-5-O-E-caffeoyl-quinate, methyl 3,5-di-O-E-caffeoyl-quinate and methyl 4-O-E-caffeoyl-quinate. The structures of the compounds were established on the basis of spectral data.

Resumo em inglês Phytochemical investigation of the bark of Cenostigma macrophyllum (Leguminosae-Caesapinioideae) resulted in the isolation and identification of valoneic acid dilactone, ellagic acid, lupeol, alkyl ferulate, four free sterols (cholesterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and sitosterol), a mixture of sitosteryl ester derivatives of fatty acids, sitosterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, stigmasterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside and saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The structure (mais) s of the isolated compounds were identified by ¹H and 13C NMR spectral analysis and comparison with literature data. The mixtures of 3-beta-hydroxysterols and fatty acids were analysed by GC/MS.

Avaliação do potencial alelopático de substâncias isoladas em sementes de araticum (Annona crassiflora)/ Allelophatic potential of substances isolated from Annona crassiflora seeds

Resumo em português Este estudo visou identificar substâncias biologicamente ativas e o potencial alelopático de esteroides glicosilados, provenientes das sementes de Annona crassiflora. O isolamento dos esteroides glicosilados foi realizado com a separação dos constituintes químicos do extrato bruto de acetato de etila em coluna cromatográfica, sendo a completa elucidação estrutural por meio de espectroscopia de RMN ¹H. Testes de germinação com as espécies Euphorbia heterophylla (mais) e Ipomoea grandifolia foram conduzidos em câmaras tipo BOD a 25ºC e fotoperíodo de 12 horas, monitorados durante 10 dias com avaliação diária, nas concentrações de 0, 20, 40, 80 e 100 mg L-1 dos materiais isolados. Utilizando as mesmas concentrações, os experimentos de desenvolvimento de radícula e hipocótilo foram mantidos em câmara de germinação a 25ºC e fotoperíodo de 24 horas, com avaliação no décimo dia. Após o extrato de acetato de etila ser submetido ao fracionamento, verificou-se a presença de sinais característicos de fitoesteróis no espectro do RMN ¹H, resultando em uma mistura de estigmasterol glicosilado e sitosterol glicosilado. Os resultados indicam que as substâncias estigmasterol e sitosterol não proporcionaram inibição na germinação e no índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG) de E. heterophylla e I. grandifolia. Por outro lado, estigmasterol e sitosterol interferiram no desenvolvimento de radícula e hipocótilo de E. heterophylla. Resumo em inglês This work aimed to identify substances and the allelopathic potential of steroidal glycosides, isolated from the seeds of Annona crassiflora. Isolation of steroidal glycosides was carried out with the separation of chemical components of ethyl acetate extract in a chromatographic column and identified by 1H NMR. Germination tests with Euphorbia heterophylla and Ipomoea grandifolia were carried out in BOD Germinator at 25ºC and 12 hr photoperiod, monitored for 10 days at (mais) concentrations of 0, 20, 40, 80 and 100 mg L-1 of the materials isolated. Using the same concentrations, experimental radicle and hypocotyl development was maintained at 25ºC with 24hr photoperiod for 10 days. After the ethyl acetate extract was submitted to fractioning, the presence of characteristic signs of steroids in the 1H NMR spectrum was verified, providing a mixture of stigmasterol and sitosterol glycoside. The results indicate that the substances stigmasterol and sitosterol did not inhibit germination and germination velocity index (SIG) of E. heterophylla and I. grandifolia. However, both substances affected radicle and hypocotyl development of E. heterophylla.

Resumo em português Do extrato diclorometano do caule de Almeidea coerulea (Nees & Mart.) A. St.-Hil. foi isolado um triterpeno o 20-hidroxi-diidrolupeol (1), e do extrato metanólico foram isolados os alcalóides dictamina (2) e eskimianina (3), além de uma mistura dos esteróides sitosterol (4) e estigmasterol (5). A identificção substâncias foi realizada pela análise dos espectros de Massas, RMN ¹H, RMN 13C, HSQC, HMBC, e por comparação com dados da literatura. Resumo em português Do extrato hexânico das raízes de Zeyheria montana M., uma Bignoniácea conhecida como bolsa‑de‑pastor, empregada popularmente contra doenças de pele, foram isolados os seguintes compostos: lapachol, α‑lapachona, desidro‑α‑lapachona, 4‑hidróxi­-α‑lapachona, β‑sitosterol, ácido esteárico e uma mistura de ácidos graxos. Estas substancias foram identificadas por métodos espectrométricos usuais e/ou (mais) comparação com amostras autênticas. No cromatograma do extrato etanólico, obtido por CLAE, foram identificados os picos correspondentes às naftoquinonas isoladas e ao ácido esteárico. A ocorrência de naftoquinonas nas raizes de Z. montana e a atividade antimicrobiana comprovada para o lapachol e a α‑lapachona justificam o uso popular desta espécie. Resumo em inglês Zeyheria montana M. (Bignoniaceae) is a widespread species in the Cerrado area of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and is popularly known as bolsa‑de‑pastor. In the Brazilian tradicional medicine its roots are used for the treatment of skin diseases. Several species of Bignoniaceae contain naphthoquinones, and lapachol was previously reported in the stem wood of Z. digitalis. This paper describes the isolation of three naphtoquinones from Z. montana stem barks, namely &# (mais) 945;‑lapachone, dehydro‑α‑lapachone and 4‑hydroxy‑α‑lapachone, besides lapachol, stearic acid and β‑sitosterol. Furthermore, we report the HPLC fingerprint for the species, which allowed the identification of the isolated compounds, except β‑sitosterol. Since the in vitro antimicrobial activity of lapachol and α‑lapachone has been previously described, the presence of these naphthoquinones in the roots of Z. montana corroborates its popular use for the treatment of skin diseases.

Resumo em inglês Most of the snakebite incidents in the Amazon region involve Bothrops atrox, whose venom presents the most potent edematogenic and necrotic activities in the genus. This work describes the studies of isolation of the chemical constituents and antiedematogenic activity of the species Peltodon radicans (Lamiaceae), which is used in the treatment of snakebites and scorpion stings in the region. The extracts presented aliphatic hydrocarbons, 3beta-OH,beta-amirin (1), 3beta-OH (mais) ,alpha-amirin (2), beta-sitosterol (3), stigmasterol (4), ursolic acid (5), 2alpha,3beta,19alpha-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (tormentic acid, 6), methyl 3beta-hydroxy,28-methyl-ursolate (7), sitosterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (8), and stigmasterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (9). The flower extracts presented the higher antiedematogenic activity. This is the first report on the study of the flowers, stem, and roots of this plant.

Resumo em inglês The phytochemical investigation of ethanolic extracts from leaves, branches and stems of D. bipinnatum afforded the steroids β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, sitostenone and sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glycopyranoside, along with two cycloartane triterpenes: cycloeucalenol and 24-methylenecycloartenol. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6623), (mais) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 15442), Micrococcus luteus (ATCC 9341) and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). The extracts of the leaves and branches showed moderate activity against Candida albicans. The extract of the branches was active against Micrococcus luteus. This is the first report on the phytochemical study of D. bipinnatum.

From the leaves were isolated 3β-O-β-galactopiranosilsitosterol, ursolic aldehyde, and mixtures of maslinic acid and 2α-hydroxyursolic acid, α and β-amyrin, uvaol and erythrodiol, sitosterol and stigmasterol, spathulenol and globulol. Hexane and chloroform leave fractions as well as ursolic and betulinic acids showed antifungal activities against the yeast form of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.

The triterpenes a and b-amirin, the steroids b-sitosterol and stigmasterol as well as the flavonoid kaempferol were also identified. The structures were established by spectral analysis, including two-dim (mais) ensional NMR techniques. It is the first report of 1,3,8-trihydroxyanthraquinone and 3-methoxy-1,6,8-trihydroxyanthraquinone in higher plants.

Resumo em inglês Chemical investigation of the MeOH extract of the leaves of Machaonia brasiliensis (Rubiaceae) resulted in the isolation and identification of 3beta-O-beta-glucopyranosyl stigmasterol, 3beta-O-beta-glucopyranosyl sitosterol, secologanoside, 7-O-beta-glucopyranosyl quercetagetin, 4,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid and 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid. The structures of these compounds were established by spectroscopic analysis, including 2D NMR experiments. The chemotaxonomic relevance of the isolation of secologanoside is discussed.

Resumo em inglês From the ethanolic extract of the stem of A. esperanzae ethyl and methyl fatty acid esters, fatty acids, aristolochic I and II acids, and β-cubebin were isolated. In addiction asarinin, populifolic and 2-oxo-populifolic acids, aristolactams AIa and AII, and sitosterol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside were also isolated and firstly described in the species. Asarinin and β-cubebin showed antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus and aristolochic acid I against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocitogenes.

Resumo em inglês Chemical investigation of the leaves of Alchornea glandulosa (Euphorbiaceae) afforded a mixture of b-sitosterol and stigmasterol, the terpenoid loliolide, the guanidine alkaloid N-1,N-2,N-3-triisopentenylguanidine and the phenolic compound corilagin. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis. The antimicrobial and antiproliferative properties of the crude methanolic extract of the leaves and of fractions from its fractionation, were investigated against a series of bacteria and fungi, as well as against four human cancer cell lines.

Resumo em inglês The fractionation column with SiO2 of the hexane extract of Sebastiania argutidens (Euphorbiaceae) yielded fractions containing hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids, sterols and pentacyclic triterpenes. Besides, one fraction showed the presence of several methyl esters, including four uncommon long chain palmitate esthers as minor components. The characterization of these chemical constituents have been done by High Resolution Gas Chromatography (HRGC) and HRGC coupled to Mass (mais) Spectrometry (GC/MS). Campesterol, stigmasterol, b-sitosterol, glutin-5-en-3-ol were identified by HRGC co-injection with standards.

Resumo em inglês The chemical investigation of the methanolic extract of the aerial part of Sebastiania macrocarpa allowed the isolation of the mixture of steroids β-sitosterol and stigmasterol, gallic acid, and scopoletin. The hexane extract of the roots allowed the isolation of the triterpene lupeol and of the macrociclic diterpene (+)-tonantzitlolone. The structures of all compounds isolated were identified on the basis of their spectral data and by comparison of their spectral da (mais) ta with values described in the literature. This is the first report involving the chemical investigation of this species.

The structures of all compounds were determined by spectroscopic analysis and comparison with published spectral data.

The structures of the compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses and compared with literature data.

Resumo em inglês Phytochemical investigation from the stems of Spathelia excelsa (Rutaceae) collected in Amazonas yielded deacetylspathelin (1), 7,8-dimethoxyflindersine (2), new glabretal-type triterpenoid 3β-angeloyl-21,24-epoxy-7α, 21α, 23α, 25-tetrahydroxy-4α, 4β, 8β, 10β-tetramethyl-25-dimethyl-14, 18-cyclo-5α, 13α, 14α, 17α-cholestane (3), in addition to the known steroids β-sitosterol and stigmasterol. Their structure (mais) s were established on the basis of spectral data. The compounds 1 and 3 were assayed on Aedes aegypti (larvicidal and adulticidal activities and compound 3 exhibited larvicidal properties with LC50 of 4,8 µg/mL.

Resumo em português Os óleos essenciais dos frutos e talos finos de Piper tuberculatum e das raízes de P. hispidum, coletados no estado de Rondônia, foram obtidos por hidrodestilação e analisados por GC e GC-MS. Foram identificados como constituintes majoritários, nos óleos dos frutos e talos finos de P. tuberculatum, o óxido de cariofileno (32,1%) e (26,6%) e o (E)-cariofileno (17,7%) e (12,3%), respectivamente. No óleo essencial das raízes de P. hispidum, foram identificados, com (mais) o constituintes majoritários, o dilapiol (57,5%), a elemicina (24,5%) e o apiol (10,2%). Do extrato etanólico dos frutos de P. tuberculatum, foram isolados os esteróides β-sitosterol e estigmasterol, as amidas piplartina e dihidropiplartina e um derivado do ácido cinâmico, o ácido 3,4,5-trimetoxi-dihidrocinâmico. Resumo em inglês The essential oils of the fruits and fine stems of Piper tuberculatum and of the roots of P. hispidum, collected in the state of Rondônia, had been gotten by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Caryophyllene oxide - 32,1% in fruits and 26,6% in fine stem, and (E)-caryophyllene - 17,7% in fruits and 12,3% in fine stems, were identified as the major constituents in such parts of P. tuberculatum. In the essential oil of the roots of P. hispidum, dillapiol (57,5% (mais) ), elemicine (24,5%) and apiole (10,2%) were identified as the most abundant constituents. Resumo em inglês The chemical composition of the ethanolic extract of the leaves and roots from Philodendron imbe Schott was investigated. The main constituents isolated the leaves were beta-sitosterol one polyprenoid hexaprenol, and 6beta-hydroxy-stigmast-4-en-3-one, a steroid, not yet reported in the Philodendron gender. A mixture of constituents, namely, ethyl myristoleate, alpha-bisabolol, ethyl isopalmitate, 3-octadecenyl-phenol and the major component ethyl palmitate, were isolated (mais) from the roots. Structure elucidation of these secondary metabolites was accomplished by spectrometric analysis, including 1D and 2D NMR experiments such as ¹H, ¹H and ¹H,13C-COSY.

The structures of the compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic and GC analysis. The allelopathic potentials of the crude ethanolic extract and fractions were evaluated against Lactuca sativa (letuce) and Allium cepa (onion) seeds.

Resumo em inglês The chemical analysis of the acetone, chloroform, toluene and methanol extracts of a pitch sample was carried out by IR and GC-MS, leading to the identification of sixty nine compounds, including fatty acids, alcohols and hydrocarbons. Analysis of the acetone extractive of a eucalyptus wood used in Brazil for pulp production was also carried out, resulting in identification of fifty nine compounds, including mainly fatty acids, phenolic compounds, beta-sitosterol and othe (mais) r steroids. This analysis showed that pitch formation had a contribution from wood extractives and other sources of contamination. The results obtained and the methodology applied can be used by the pulp industry to develop new methods of pitch control.

Resumo em inglês A new extraction method for sterols was tested in fruits of Ottonia martiana Miq., a shrub belonging to the family Piperaceae, popularly known as "anestésica" due to the use of its roots and aerial parts, in alcoholic preparations, in treatment of odontological problems. For this purpose, a portable extraction equipment was developed, to operate with liquified gases, which showed to be practical, fast and effective, besides being economical and ecological. In the chromat (mais) ographic analysis of the extracts obtained in this equipment, it was demonstrated the presence of two sterols, isomers of b-sitosterol and stigmasterol.

Antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of 'açaí' (Euterpe precatoria Mart.)

Resumo em inglês Decoction of roots of the Amazonian palm açaí (Euterpe precatoria Mart.) is widely used by Brazilian and Peruvian people as an anti-inflammatory, to heal kidney and liver diseases and against snake bites. In this study, the antioxidant activity of extracts and flavonoids (quercetin, catechin, epicatechin, rutin and astilbin) isolated from roots and leaf stalks of E. precatoria was investigated using β-carotene in TLC plates and DPPH radical scavenging in a spectrop (mais) hotometric bioassay. All extracts and flavonoids showed activity. Also, the cytotoxic activity of these extracts was evaluated by the brine shrimp (Artemia salina) larvicide bioassay and was lower than that of lapachol, used as control. The presence of flavonoids and sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside in the extracts can justify the use of the plant in traditional medicine.

Resumo em inglês Croton nepetaefolius is an aromatic plant native to the northeast of Brazil where it is extensively used in folk medicine as a sedative, orexigen and antispasmodic agent. The present work deals with the chromatographic analysis of the ethanolic extract of Croton nepetaefolius stalk. It allowed the isolation and characterization of two diterpenoids named 1,4-dihydroxy-2E,6E,12E-trien-5-one-casbane and 4-hydroxy-2E,6E,12E-5-one-casbane, two acetophenones named 2-hydroxy-4,6 (mais) -dimethoxyacetophenone and 2-hydroxy-3,4,6-trimethoxyacetophenone and the steroids 3-O-b-D-glucopiranosylsitosterol and a mixture of b-sitosterol and stigmasterol. Structural elucidation was done on the basis of spectral data, mainly high field NMR and EIMS.

Resumo em inglês In the present work, the crude ethanol extract from wood of G. macrophylla was submitted to liquid/liquid partition between hexane, CH2Cl2, EtOAc and n-BuOH. Each phase was individually chromatographed over silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 or Amberlite XAD-2 to give eight terpene derivatives, such as five sesquiterpenoids (caryophyllene oxide, guai-6-en-10β-ol, spathulenol, aromadendrane-4β,10α-diol and aloaromadendrane-4α,10β-diol) as well as three tri (mais) terpenoids (cicloart-24-ene-3β,23(R*)-diol, cicloart-24-ene-3β,23(S*)-diol, and cicloart-23E-ene-3β,25-diol). Additionally, were isolated three fatty acids (linolenic, linoleic and stearic), two steroids (sitosterol and stigmasterol) and sacarose. The structures of all these compounds were characterized by spectrometric analysis, mainly mass spectrometry and NMR and comparison of these data described in the literature.

Resumo em português O gênero Copaifera L. é um dos mais importantes economicamente na Região Amazônica devido, principalmente, à produção dos óleos de copaíba, oléo-resinas com diversas propriedades farmacológicas confirmadas. Apesar disso, os estudos fitoquímicos com as sementes das árvores do gênero Copaifera L.são raros. Copaifera officinalis foi a primeira espécie do gênero Copaifera a ser descrita. Este trabalho descreve a composição dos extratos obtidos em hexano e e (mais) m acetato de etila das sementes de C. officinalis. No extrato obtido em hexano, a análise por cromatografia em fase gasosa utilizando padrões e através de espectrometria de massas permitiu a identificação de: esqualeno, tetradecano, hexadecano, campesterol, estigmasterol e beta-sitosterol; os ácidos graxos hexadecanóico, 9-octadecenóico e octadecanóico (majoritários); e decanóico, eicosanóico, docosanóico e tetracosanóico (minoritários). Cumarina foi isolada do extrato em acetato de etila e identificada por técnicas de RMN. Resumo em inglês Copaifera L. is one of the most economically important plant genera in the Amazon Region, since it exudes a resin-oil named copaiba oil possessing several confirmed pharmacological properties. In spite of that, phytochemical studies of the seeds from this genus are rare. Copaifera officinalis L. was the first species in the genus Copaifera to be described. This paper describes the chemical composition of the hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of the seeds from this species (mais) . In the hexane extract, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analyses enabled us to identify squalene, tetradecane, hexadecane, campesterol, stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol; hexadecanoic, 9-octadecenoic and octadecanoic acids (major substances); as well as decanoic, eicosanoic, docosanoic and tetracosanoic (minor substances) acids. Coumarin was detected in the ethyl acetate extract, isolated and identified by NMR.

Resumo em inglês The essential oils from leaves, root bark and root wood of Cochlospermum vitifolium were investigated for the first time. The oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS. The main volatile constituents were beta-caryophyllene (8.2 - 46.5%), beta-bisabolene (11.5 - 29.3%), gamma-muurolene (28.4%), alpha-humulene (26.0%), 1-hydroxy-3-hexadecanone (16.2 - 19.5%) and beta-pinene (10.6%). Phytochemical analysis of the root bark and root wood extracts yielded (mais) excelsin, pinoresinol, narigenin, aromadendrin, galic acid and a triacylbenzene, along with beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol and their D-glucosides. The structures of all compounds were determined by analyses of the spectroscopic data (NMR and MS), and comparison with the literature.

Resumo em inglês Phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts and roots of Mucuna cinerea led to the isolation of a mixture of fatty acids, triacylglicerols, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, stigmasterol glucoside, daucosterol, asperglaucide (4) and the isoflavonoids prunetin (1), genistein (2), medicarpin (3), daidzein (5), 7-O-alpha-glycopiranosyl daidzein (6). An in vitro bioassay was carried out with compounds 1-4, at the concentration of 50 and 5 mug mL-1 against the phytonematodes (mais) M. incognita and H. glycines. Although the four compounds showed some nematocidal property, the most active was (1), causing 70% mortality of M. incognita at the concentration of 50 mug mL-1.

Resumo em inglês The genus Rauia, that is poorly chemically studied, belongs to the Rutaceae family. This family has been known to contain a large variety of secondary metabolites. Our phytochemical investigation of the stem and leaves of Rauia resinosa has led to the identification of the structurally related coumarins: murralongin (1), murrangatin (2), munomicrolin (3), murrangatin diacetate (4), umbelliferone (5), rauianin (6) and one novel coumarin: 3-ethylrauianin (7); the alkaloids: (mais) N-methyl-4-methoxy-2-quinolone (8), mirtopsine (9), dictamine (10), γ-fagarine (11), skimmianine (12), Z-dimethylrhoifolinate (13), zantodioline (14), zantobungeanine (15), veprissine (16), one novel alkaloid 7-hydroxy-8-methoxy-N-methylflindersine (17) and 8-hydroxy-N-methylflindersine (18) that is described as a natural product for the first time, and a mixture of steroids: as sitosterol and stigmasterol.

Resumo em inglês The phytochemical investigation of trypanocidal extracts from leaves and stems of Conchocarpus heterophyllus (A. St.-Hil.) Kallunki & Pirani (Rutaceae) afforded new pyranoflavones along with the known compounds flavone, 7-methoxyflavone, 5-hydroxyflavone, haplotusine, 1-methyl-2-phenyl-4-quinolone alkaloid, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, and beta-sitosteryl benzoate. Their structures were established based on their spectral data. NMR data for the alkaloid haplotusine and (mais) the new pyranoflavones are described for the first time herein. These compounds were assayed on the tripomastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi. Among them, haplotusine and 1-methyl-2-phenyl-4-quinolone showed moderate values of IC50 136.9 and 144.9 mM, respectively.

Resumo em inglês The chemical investigation of the ethanol extracts of stems, roots and leaves of Lippia sidoides led to the isolation of: steroid β-sitosterol, naphthoquinone tecomaquinone, monoterpene carvacrol, flavonoid 4',5,7-trihydroxyflavanone (naringenin), 3',4',5,7-tetrahydroxyflavanone and 4',5,7-trihydroxy-6-methoxyflavone flavonoids mixture, and 3,4,4',6'-tetrahydroxydihydrochalcone-2'-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and 4,4',6'-trihydroxydihydrochalcone-2'-O- β-D-glucopy (mais) ranoside dihydrochalcones mixture. Their structures were characterized on the basis of spectral data, mainly ¹H and 13C NMR (1D and 2D) and mass spectra. The ethanol extract and isolated compounds were evaluated for their antioxidative properties using the method of inhibition of free radical DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl).

Resumo em português Extratos etanólicos de Qualea grandiflora e Copernicia prunifera e extrato hexânico de Dipteryx lacunifera foram avaliados quanto a atividade antibacteriana, utilizando ensaios de difusão a partir de orifício e concentração inibitória mínima (CIM), frente a cepas Gram positivas e Gram-negativas, incluindo espécies multidroga resistentes. O extrato de Q. grandiflora apresentou atividade moderada para as cepas de Staphylococcus epidermidis (CIM = 500 µg/mL) e ativ (mais) idade fraca sobre as demais bactérias Gram-positivas testadas e inativo sobre bactérias Gram-negativas. Os resultados obtidos com S. epidermidis apesar de moderados são importantes, uma vez que este microorganismo é o principal causador de bacteremias e sepse associada com dispositivos médicos implantados. gama-Tocoferol e a mistura de sitosterol e estigmasterol foram isolados do extrato etanólico de raiz de C. prunifera e as estruturas destes compostos foram identificadas com base na análise dos dados espectrais de RMN e comparação com a literatura. Resumo em inglês Ethanol extracts of Qualea grandiflora and Copernicia prunifera and hexane extract of Dipteryx lacunifera were evaluated by diffusion in agar and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including multiresistant drug strains. The extract of Q. grandiflora presented moderate activity for Staphylococcus epidermidis (MIC = 500 µg/mL) and weak activity against other Gram-positive strains and inactive for Gram-negative species. T (mais) he results obtained for S. epidermidis despite being moderate are important because this pathogen is often recovered from bacteremia and sepsis from infections of implanted devices. gamma-Tocopherol and the mixture of sitosterol and stigmasterol were isolated from the ethanol extract of the roots of C. prunifera. The structures of these compounds were identified by NMR spectroscopy and comparison with literature data.

Resumo em inglês Phytochemical investigation of the fruits extracts of Trichilia elegans and Trichilia catigua (Meliaceae) has led to the identification of the limonoids 11β-acetoxyobacunone, cedrelone, methylangolensate and epimeric mixture of photogedunin besides known coumarins (scoparone, scopoletin, umbeliferone) and the steroids stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, sitostenone and campesterol. The structures of the compounds were proposed by spectroscopic analysis and comparison wi (mais) th literature data. An evaluation of the insecticidal activity of the fruits extracts of Trichilia ssp. was carried out and the extracts of T. elegans revealed to have strong insecticidal activity and the extracts of T. catigua showed moderate larval mortality on Spodoptera frugiperda.

Resumo em inglês The chemical composition of two specimens of Esenbeckia grandiflora, collected in the south and northeast regions of Brazil, was investigated. In this study, three β-indolopyridoquinazoline alkaloids from the leaves (rutaecarpine, 1-hydroxyrutaecarpine) and roots (euxylophoricine D) were isolated for the first time in this genus. In addition, the triterpenes α-amyrin, β-amyrin, α-amyrenonol, β-amyrenonol, 3α-hydroxy-ursan-12-one, and 3α- (mais) hydroxy-12,13-epoxy-oleanane, the coumarins auraptene, umbelliferone, pimpinelin, and xanthotoxin, the furoquinoline alkaloids delbine and kokusaginine, and the phytosteroids sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol and 3β-O-β-D-glucopyranosylsitosterol were also isolated from the leaves, twigs, roots and stems of this species. Structures of these compounds were established by spectral analysis.

Resumo em inglês Chemical studies with aerial parts of Microgramma vacciniifolia (Langsd. & Fisch.) Copel. afforded ²-sitosterol, hopan-22-ol, 6-metoxiapinenin-7-O-²-D-allopyranoside and a mixture containing ethyl esters of carboxilic acids. The structures of the coumpounds were elucidated by spectroscopy and GC-MS analysis. The total phenolics contents of the crude extract and fractions were determined by Folin-Ciocalteau method. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the 2,2-dip (mais) henyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The AcOEt fraction showed better activity in DPPH assay (9.9 ± 0.03 µg/mL), and presented also higher contents of the total phenolic (93.60 ± 1.11 µg/mg). Antimicrobial and allelopathic effects of the crude etanolic extract and fractions also were evaluated. In addition, the combination of biological activities was discussed.

Resumo em português Este trabalho descreve a composição química dos óleos essenciais e o isolamento de onze substâncias de Eupatorium ballotifolium Kunth, Asteraceae. Os óleos essenciais foram obtidos por hidrodestilação, analisados por CG-EM e avaliados quanto às suas atividades frente à enzima acetilcolinesterase. O rendimento dos óleos foi de 0,11% para as folhas e 0,03% para os talos. Os principais constituintes dos óleos foram os sesquiterpenos β-cariofileno (24,9 e 22, (mais) 2%), espatulenol (17,7 e 12,4%) e epóxi-allo-aromadendreno (23,0 e 23,6%). Do extrato hexânico da parte aérea foi isolada a mistura de β-sitosterol e estigmasterol, incluindo suas formas glicosiladas, e os triterpenos acetato de taraxasterila e taraxasterol, enquanto, do extrato etanólico foram isolados os flavonóides nepetina and 3-O-glicosil-quercetina. Do extrato hexânico das raízes foram isolados os triterpenos epi-friedelanol e damara-20,24-dien-3β-ol e do extrato etanólico a cumarina 11-hidroxi-11,12-di-hidroobliquina. As estruturas de todos os compostos foram determinadas usando técnicas espectroscópica tais como IV, EM e RMN ¹H e 13C. Resumo em inglês This work describes the chemical composition of the essential oils and the isolation of eleven substances from Eupatorium ballotifolium Kunth, Asteraceae. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation, analyzed by GC/MS and evaluated towards the acetylcholinesterase enzyme. The oils yield was of 0.11% for the leaves and 0.03% for the stems. The main constituents of the oils were the sesquiterpenes β-caryophyllene (24.9 and 22.2%), spathulenol (17.7 and 12.4%) (mais) and epoxy-allo-aromadendrene (23.0 and 23.6%). From the hexane extract of the aerial part were isolated a mixture of sitosterol and stigmasterol, its glucosides, and the triterpenes taraxasteryl acetate and taraxasterol, while from the ethanol extract were obtained the flavonoids nepetin and 3-O-glucoside-quercetin. The triterpenes epi-friedelanol and dammara-20,24-dien-3β-ol were obtained from the hexane extract of roots, while the coumarin 11-hydroxy-11,12-di-hydroobliquine was obtained from the ethanol extract. Resumo em inglês The phytochemical investigation of Sida galheirensis led to the isolation of 5,4'-dihydroxy-3,7,3´-trimethoxyflavone, 17³-ethoxyphaeoforbide, a rare natural product, 6,7-dimethoxycoumarin, ortho-hydroxybenzoic acid, sitosterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, stigmasterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, 5,7,4'-trihydroxyflavone, 5,7,3',4'-tetrahydroxyflavone, kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-(6"-E-p-coumaroyl) glucopyranoside and luteolin 7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside. Their structures were a (mais) ssigned based on spectroscopic analyses, including two-dimensional NMR techniques. Antioxidant activities of hexane, CHCl3, EtOAc, BuOH and EtOH extracts of Sida galheirensis were measured using the 1,2-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. This is also the first work reporting the chemical investigation of Sida galheirensis.

Resumo em inglês Memora peregrina (local name: 'ciganinha' - Bignoniaceae) is a weed that often invades pastures in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. From its leaves and subterranean parts, the following compounds were isolated: allantoin (20.7 w/w in subterranean parts), the iridoid 6beta-hydroxyipolamiide, hyperin, 3'-O-methylhyperin, 4-hydroxy-N-methylproline, beta-sitosterol, alpha-amirin and beta-amirin, and lupeol. Allantoin exhibited an activity of inducing germination in (mais) seeds of Lactuca sativa used as a biological model, and the iridoid showed moderate activity in the larval development of Anagasta kuehniella. These results, associated with this plant's behavior, are suggestive of the occurrence of adaptive and competitive strategies in relation to other plant species.

Resumo em português Pterodon emarginatus Vogel, Fabaceae, conhecida popularmente como sucupira-branca, é uma espécie arbórea que possui interesse como planta medicinal e fonte de madeira. Vários estudos com o óleo e extratos dos seus frutos demonstraram atividades cercaricida, antimicrobiana e antiinflamatória. Tendo em vista a importância de P. emarginatus como planta medicinal o presente trabalho analisou a composição química, a atividade antifúngica e antibacteriana do óleo es (mais) sencial de suas folhas, isolou e identificou compostos do extrato etanólico bruto das folhas. A análise do óleo essencial das folhas permitiu a identificação de 9 hidrocarbonetos sesquiterpênicos, sendo os majoritários o γ-muuroleno (48,79%) e o biciclogermacreno (22,66%). O óleo essencial apresentou atividade frente a bactérias Gram-positivas, sendo inativo sobre isolados clínicos de Candida. O estudo fitoquímico do extrato etanólico das folhas permitiu o isolamento da mistura dos esteróides estigmasterol e β-sitosterol. Todos os resultados obtidos contribuem para a ampliação de informações sobre essa planta amplamente utilizada pela população. Resumo em inglês Pterodon emarginatus Vogel, Fabaceae, known as "sucupira-branca", is a tree specie with interest as medicinal plant and source of wood. Several studies with the oil and fruit's extracts have been showed cercaricid, antimicrobial and antiinflamatory activities. The importance of P. emarginatus conducted the present study to realize evaluated antifungal and antibacterial activity of essential oil of their leaves, and isolated some compounds of ethanolic extract of the leave (mais) s. The analysis of the essential oil from leaves allowed the identification of nine sesquiterpenics hydrocarbons, with the majority γ-muurolene (48.79%) and biciclogermacrene (22.66%). The essential oil showed activity against the Gram-positive bacteria, and inactive on clinical isolates of Candida. The phytochemical study of the ethanol extract of the leaves allowed the isolation of the mixture of stigmasterol and β-sitosterol steroids. All results contribute to the expansion of information about this plant widely used by the population.

Resumo em inglês A new triterpene, 3beta,6beta,21beta-trihydroxyolean-12-ene and a new iridoid, 8alpha-methyl-8beta-hydroxy-6beta-(3',4'-dimethoxy)benzoyloxy-1 alpha,3alpha-dimethoxy-octahydro-cyclopenta[c]pyran were isolated from the trunk bark of a specimen of Tabebuia heptaphylla (Bignoniaceae) collected in the "Pantanal" of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Twelve known compounds were also obtained in this work, comprising four iridoids, 6-O-p-hydroxybenzoylajugol, 6-O-p-methoxybenzoylajugo (mais) l, 6-O-3",4"-dimethoxybenzoylajugol, 8alpha-methyl-8beta-hydroxy-6beta-(4'-hydroxy)benzoyloxy-1alpha,3 alpha-dimethoxy-octahydro-cyclopenta[c]pyran, a cyclopentene dialdehyde, 2-formyl-5-(3',4'-dimethoxybenzoyloxy)-3-methyl-2-cyclopentene-1-acetaldehyde, a phenylethanoid glycoside, verbascoside and three benzoic acid derivatives, p-hydroxybenzoic, p-methoxybenzoic and 3,4-dimethoxybenzoic acids, in addition to squalene, sitostenone and sitosterol. The antioxidant properties of the isolated compounds were also evaluated in this work.

Resumo em português Os fitonutrientes podem ser encontrados em muitas frutas, sendo o abacate o mais rico em beta-sitosterol (fitoesterol) e glutationa. O fitoesterol é uma substância de origem vegetal cuja estrutura é muito similar a do colesterol e seu mecanismo de ação envolve a inibição intestinal de absorção do colesterol e diminuição da síntese de colesterol hepático. O efeito é exercido sobre os valores de colesterol plasmático total e LDL, sem afetar os níveis de HDL (mais) e triglicérides sanguíneos. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a influência do consumo de farinha de abacate variedade Hass nos níveis séricos de colesterol total, HDL, LDL, triglicérides, colesterol hepático e excretado. Estes parâmetros foram investigados em ratos Wistar hipercolesterolêmicos durante 30 e 60 dias de experimento. Ao final de 30 dias, a dieta com 15% de abacate mostrou ser mais efetiva para reduzir os níveis de colesterol total e LDL e aumentar o HDL em comparação ao controle. Foi observado que para o teor de colesterol excretado a melhor dieta foi a de 25% de abacate, pois quanto maior a concentração de abacate, maior a excreção de colesterol. A dieta com 15% e 25% de abacate, foram as que mais influenciaram nos níveis de colesterol hepático. Resumo em inglês Phytonutrients can be found in fruits, and the avocado contains four times more beta-sitosterol (phytosterol) and it is one of the best glutathione sources. The phytosterol is a vegetable substance whose structure is very similar to the cholesterol one and its action mechanism involves the intestinal inhibition of cholesterol absorption and the synthesis of hepatic cholesterol. The effect has an influence on the values of total plasmatic cholesterol and LDL without affect (mais) ing the levels of HDL and triglycerides. The present work had the objective to analyze the influence of the consumption of the Hass avocado on the levels of total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and hepatic and excreted cholesterol. These parameters were investigated in hipercholesterolemic Wistar rats during 30 and 60 days of experiment. At the end of 30 days, the 15% avocado diet reduced the levels of total cholesterol and LDL in comparison to the control. It was observed that for the excreted cholesterol, the best diet was the 25% of avocado since the cholesterol excretion increased with the increase of the avocado concentration. The 15% avocado diet also influenced the levels of hepatic cholesterol.

Resumo em português Este estudo descreve a anatomia e analisa a histoquímica dos órgãos vegetativos de Priva lappulacea (L.) Pers. Secções transversais e paradérmicas, à mão livre, de material fresco e fixado foram utilizadas para as análises anatômicas e histoquímicas, usando microscopia óptica. Os caracteres anatômicos são comuns àqueles descritos para a família, podendo ser utilizados como diagnóstico na sua identificação. Destacam-se, nas folhas, os tricomas, glandular (mais) e não-glandular, estômatos anomocíticos, em ambas as faces da epiderme, e mesofilo dorsiventral. As expansões no pecíolo são acrescentadas à diagnose da espécie. Estudo fitoquímico realizado com as partes aéreas mostrou a presença de triterpeno (ácido ursólico) e esteróide (β-sitosterol), iridóides (ipolamida e catalpol), açúcar redutor (glucose), flavonóide (luteolina) e fenilpropanóide (verbascosídeo). Nas raízes foi encontrada apenas glucose e dois iridóides estiveram presentes no caule e folhas. Alcalóides, saponinas, cumarinas, derivados cinâmicos, proantocianidinas condensadas e leucoantocianidinas não foram constatados nas partes analisadas. A descrição anatômica e os testes histoquímicos são inéditos para P. lappulacea. Freehanded transversal and paradermal sections of fresh and fixed material were used for the anatomical and histochemical analyses, using optical microscopy. The anatomical characters are common to those described for the family, being able to be used to diagnosis in its identification. The leaves are highlighted by the presence of glandular and non-gla (mais) ndular trichomes, anomocytic stomata on both faces of the epidermis and dorsiventral mesophyll. The expansions in the petiole are added to the diagnosis of this species. The phytochemical study carried out with aerial organs showed the presence of triterpene (ursolic acid) and steroid (β-sitosterol), iridoids (ipolamide and catalpol), reducing sugar (glucose), flavonoid (luteolin) and fenilpropanoid (verbascosides). In the roots only glucose was found and two iridoids are present in stem and leaves. Alkaloids, saponins, cumarines, cinamic acid derivates, condensed proantocianidines and leucoantocianidines were not checked in the analyzed parts. The anatomical description and the histochemical tests are unpublished for P. lappulacea.

Resumo em português O berbigão Anomalocardia brasiliana é um molusco marinho muito consumido na região litorânea de Santa Catarina. No entanto, são escassos os dados na literatura sobre a composição em ácidos graxos e esteróis. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar a composição lipídica do berbigão Anomalocardia brasiliana (Gmelin, 1791) coletados na Reserva Extrativista Marinha do Pirajubaé (REMAPI) de Florianópolis/SC, em outono e primavera. O teor de lipídios tota (mais) is encontrados no berbigão foi de 1.21g% e 0.72g% no outono e primavera, respectivamente. Foram identificados e quantificados 20 ácidos graxos, sendo 6 saturados (14:0, 15:0, 16:0, 17:0, 18:0, 20:0), 4 monoinsaturados (16:1, 17:1, 18:1, 20:1) e 10 polinsaturados (18:2, 18:3, 18:4, 20:2, 20:3, 20:4, 20:5, 22:4, 22:5, 22:6). Observaram-se ácidos graxos polinsaturados em maiores quantidades que os saturados e monoinsaturados em ambas as coletas: 40.7% de polinsaturados, 30.8% de saturados, 17.2% de monoinsaturados no outono e 39.7% de polinsaturados, 27.7% de saturados, 13.7% de monoinsaturados na primavera. O colesterol correspondeu a um valor de 94.38 mg/100g no outono e 76.75mg/100g na primavera. Entre os esteróis, também foi identificado o campesterol, estigmasterol e β-sitosterol, porém em quantidades inferiores ao colesterol. Estes resultados mostram que o berbigão é fonte não significativa de lipídios totais, apresentando baixos teores de ácidos graxos saturados e colesterol. A recomendação diária do berbigão oferece uma segurança alimentar em relação à ingestão de gorduras totais e colesterol e, portanto este alimento pode fazer parte de uma dieta saudável. Resumo em inglês The berbigão Anomalocardia brasiliana is a marine shellfish which is commoning consumed in the coastal region of Santa Catarina. However, there are limited available data on the composition of their fatty acids and sterols. The objetive of this study was to determine the lipid composition of the berbigão from Reserva Extrativista Marinha de Pirajubaé (REMAPI), Florianópolis/SC, Brasil, during the autumn and spring. The total lipid content was 1.21g% and 0.72g% in the (mais) autumn and spring, respectively. Several fatty acids were identified and quantified, including 20 fatty acids, 6 saturated (14:0, 15:0, 16:0, 17:0, 18:0, 20:0), 4 monounsaturated (16:1, 17:1, 18:1, 20:1) e 10 polyunsaturated (18:2, 18:3, 18:4, 20:2, 20:3, 20:4, 20:5, 22:4, 22:5, 22:6). There was a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids in total than saturated and monounsaturated, regardless of season: 40.7% of polyunsaturated, 30.8% of saturated, 17.2% of monounsaturated in the autumn and 39.7% of polyunsaturated, 27.7% of saturated, 13.7% of monounsaturated in the spring. The cholesterol corresponded to a value of 94.38 mg% in the autumn and 76.75 mg% in the spring. Among the sterols were found campesterol, estigmasterol and β-sitosterol, but in lower quantities than cholesterol. These results showed that the berbigão was not a significant source of lipids, revealing low levels of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol. Berbigão is recommended for daily consumption as part of a healthy diet due to it is safe levels of fats and cholesterol.

Caracterização físico-química de creme vegetal enriquecido com ésteres de fitosteróis/ Physico-chemical characterization of a phytosterol ester enriched margarine

Resumo em português Atualmente, esteróis e estanóis têm sido adicionados a margarinas especiais, comercialmente disponíveis como alimentos funcionais, com o intuito de reduzir os níveis de colesterol. Como parte de uma dieta saudável, é cientificamente comprovado que esse tipo de produto reduz o colesterol LDL em aproximadamente 10-15%. A literatura disponível sobre os efeitos dos fitosteróis/fitostanóis na redução do colesterol no organismo, bem como a forma como estes component (mais) es são metabolizados, é muito vasta. Porém, informações sobre as propriedades físicas e químicas destas substâncias e os efeitos de sua aplicação em alimentos, do ponto de vista tecnológico, dificilmente são encontradas. Este trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar um creme vegetal enriquecido com fitosteróis e comparar suas propriedades físicas com as de margarinas comuns disponíveis comercialmente. As composições em ácidos graxos e em esteróis foram determinadas por cromatografia gasosa. Foram, também, analisados ponto de amolecimento, textura, composição química e estrutura cristalina. O creme vegetal enriquecido é composto de 49,3% de umidade, 49,6% de lipídios e 1,1% de sólidos. O b-sitosterol é o esterol mais abundante, constituindo 36,1% do total de esteróis. O ácido linoléico (C18:2 n-6) corresponde a 45,3% do total de ácidos graxos e é o que está presente em maior quantidade. Em geral, as propriedades de textura da base gordurosa e do creme vegetal apresentaram correlação linear significativa. Embora um pouco mais duro que as margarinas cremosas comerciais, o creme vegetal com fitosteróis apresenta plasticidade satisfatória na faixa de temperatura entre a de refrigeração e a ambiente e maior resistência à temperatura do que as margarinas cremosas. Em geral, os ésteres de fitosteróis apresentaram comportamento de fusão e cristalização diferentes dos óleos e gorduras comestíveis. Resumo em inglês Recently, sterol and stanol esters have been added to special margarines, which are commercially available as functional foods with the ability to reduce both total and LDL cholesterol levels. As part of a healthy diet, this type of product has been scientifically proven to lower blood LDL cholesterol by around 10-15%, which implies a dramatic lowering in coronary heart disease risk by 25%. Current literature on this field provides a great amount of information on the eff (mais) ects of phytosterols/phytostanols in cholesterol lowering and attempts to explain their metabolism in human body, but researches on their physical and chemical properties and their application in food products are limited in the food technology area. The objective of this study is to characterize a phytosterol ester enriched margarine and to compare their physical behavior to common margarines commercially available. Fatty acid and sterol compositions were determined by gas-liquid cromatography and a constant speed texture analyser was used to evaluate the texture profiles of the samples. The phytosterol ester-enriched margarine contains 49.3% of moisture, 49.6% of lipids and 1.1% of solids. ß-Sitosterol is the most abundant sterol, totalizing 36.1%. Linoleic acid (C18:2 n-6) is the fatty acid that is present in the greatest amount and corresponds to 45.3% of total fatty acid composition. In general, texture properties of the fat base and its respective spread presented a significant linear correlation. Although harder than common margarines commercially available, margarine with phytosterol esters presents good spread ability in the range of temperature between room and refrigeration and is more resistant to higher temperatures than common margarines. In general, the phytosterol esters presented melting and crystallization behavior quite different from other edible fats and oils.

Resumo em português Mimosa paraibana Barneby foi submetida a um estudo fitoquímico para o isolamento de seus constituintes químicos, através de métodos cromatográficos usuais, e posterior identificação estrutural, utilizando-se métodos espectroscópicos de RMN ¹H e 13C uni e bidimensionais, além de comparações com modelos da literatura. Deste estudo pioneiro, foram isolados e identificados cinco constituintes da fase clorofórmica: uma mistura dos esteróides, β-sitosterol e (mais) estigmasterol, a 15¹-hidroxi-feofitina A, a 5,7-dihidroxiflavanona, o 3,4,5-trihidroxibenzoato de etila e o ácido p-cumárico. A atividade antioxidante das fases hexânica, clorofórmica e acetato de etila foi avaliada utilizando o radical estável DPPH (1,1-difenil-2-picril-hidrazil) e os resultados comparados com o padrão ácido ascórbico. A avaliação da citotoxicidade das fases foi realizada empregando-se o ensaio de letalidade contra Artemia salina. Dos extratos avaliados, somente o hexânico mostrou baixa toxicidade. Resumo em inglês The phytochemical study of Mimosa paraibana Barneby led to the isolation of its chemical constituents, through the usual chromatographic methods, and further structural identification, using ¹H and 13C NMR spectroscopic methods based on one and two-dimensional techniques, in addition to comparison with literature data. From this pioneering investigation with M. paraibana, five constituents were isolated and identified from the chloroform extract: a mixture of β-sito (mais) sterol and stigmasterol, 15¹-hydroxy-phaeophytin A, 5,7-dihydroxyflavanone, ethyl 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate and p-coumaric acid. The antioxidant activity of the hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of M. paraibana were measured using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay and the results compared with standard ascorbic acid. The toxicity activity of the extracts were performed using the bioassay of Artemia salina.

Composição química de nozes e sementes comestíveis e sua relação com a nutrição e saúde/ Chemical composition of nuts and edible seeds and their relation to nutrition and health

Resumo em português Esta revisão sistemática compara a composição química em nutrientes e outros compostos bioativos entre diferentes nozes e sementes comestíveis, relacionando-a com a nutrição e saúde. Foi realizada pesquisa bibliográfica nas bases Biological Abstracts, CAB Abstracts, Food Science and Technology Abstracts, Medline e Lilacs segundo os critérios de seleção: artigos de pesquisa original publicados nos últimos cinco anos em periódicos nacionais ou internacionais (mais) das áreas de Ciência de Alimentos, Medicina I e Medicina II, indexados no Institute for Scientific Information. Os artigos foram analisados conforme critérios de qualidade pré-estabelecidos. Nozes verdadeiras (amêndoas, avelãs, castanhas, castanhas-de-caju, castanhas-do-pará, macadâmias, nozes e pistaches) e sementes comestíveis (amendoim e amêndoa de baru) são boas fontes de lipídeos e proteínas. As frações lipídicas são compostas especialmente pelos ácidos graxos oléico (C18:1) e linoléico (C18:2), com destaque para a relação ω-6:ω-3 da macadâmia, noz, castanha e amêndoa de baru, perfil favorável à redução do risco de doenças cardiovasculares. As proteínas apresentam perfil de aminoácidos que atende grande parte das necessidades de escolares, contendo teores mais elevados de sulfurados que as leguminosas como feijões. Essas nozes e sementes comestíveis também são boas fontes de fitoesteróis, especialmente de β-sitoesterol; de minerais, sobretudo cálcio, ferro, zinco, selênio e potássio; de tocoferóis, com ênfase para o α-tocoferol, e de fibras alimentares insolúveis. Esses alimentos contêm alta densidade de nutrientes e de substâncias bioativas que potencializam seus efeitos benéficos à saúde e, portanto, o estudo e o consumo deles devem ser estimulados. Resumo em inglês This systematic review compares the chemical composition among different types of nuts and edible seeds with regard to nutrients and other bioactive compounds and relates this composition to nutrition and health. This literature review was based on Biological Abstracts, CAB Abstracts, Food Science and Technology Abstracts, Medline and Lilacs, in accordance with the following selection criteria: original research articles published in the last five years in Brazilian or in (mais) ternational journals in the fields of Food Science, Medicine I and Medicine II, indexed in the Institute for Scientific Information. The articles were analyzed according to pre-established quality criteria. True nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, chestnuts, cashew nuts, Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, walnuts and pistachios) and edible seeds (peanuts and baru almonds) are good sources of lipids and proteins. The lipid fractions are composed especially of oleic (C18:1) and linoleic (C18:2) fatty acids, with emphasis on the ω-6 to ω-3 relation in macadamia, walnut, chestnut and baru almond, whose profiles favor the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk. Their proteins present an amino acid profile that meets the requirements of school children and contain more sulfur-containing amino acids than legumes such as beans. These nuts and edible seeds are also good sources of phytoesterols, mainly β-sitosterol; minerals, particularly calcium, iron, zinc, selenium and potassium; tocopherols, especiallyα-tocopherol; and insoluble fiber. These nutrient-dense foods contain bioactive substances that maximize their beneficial health effects and, for this reason, their study and consumption should be encouraged.
