Este artigo apresenta uma reinterpretação das reformas pombalinas no atlântico português, propondo como estudo de caso os Açores. As reformas de 1766 são perspectivadas no contexto da crise fiscal do Estado e analisadas segundo a tradição cameralista, à luz dos conceitos de "razão de Estado" e de "polícia", comentando-se os objetivos e os limites do programa reformista no quadro das relações centro-periferia.
