ESTUDIO DE LA CONTAMINACION FECAL MENSUAL Y ESTACIONAL EN LA ZONA COSTERA ADYACENTE AL EMISARIO SUBMARINO EN LA BAHIA DE PUERTO MONTT/ STUDY OF MONTHLY AND SEASONAL FAECAL CONTAMINATION IN THE COASTAL AREA ADYACENT TO THE SUBMARINE WASTEWATER DIFFUSER IN THE BAY OF PUERTO MONTT

The coastal area of the interior sea of the Tenth Region, including the Reloncaví Sound, is an area that since the first inhabitants settled down in their surroundings it has been impacted by domestic and industrial wastewater, as well as for agricultural, forestry and fish farming activities in the last 10 years. The coastal area of the bay of Puerto Montt has been little studied, mainly when someone tries to evaluate the current state of the environmental conditions an (mas) d further more, when pretending to know the possible impacts generated after the installation of a submarine wastewater diffuser. The present study seeks to obtain a diagnosis of the state of bacteriological contamination of the bay of Puerto Montt, by using the faecal coliform index. Five sampling stations in the coast and six in deeper waters of the bay were established, the last six parallel to the first ones. Sampling in the coastal stations was performed monthly and seasonally in deep waters stations of the bay. For the bacteriological analysis of the water samples, the multiple tubes method was used (MPN), a quantitative method that allows to estimate the population of faecal coliforms bacteria present in the water, by inoculating series of 5 tubes in decreasing dilutions of the sample into proper cultivation media. For the analysis of the information, parametric variance analysis, Tukey test and test “t” of Student were performed. The bacteriological contamination shows ranges of seasonal faecal coliforms between 16000 NMP fc/100 ml. Finally, it can be point out that the population of faecal coliforms in the bay of Puerto Montt has remained stable in relation to previous reports. However, it is considered essential to continue with the monitoring of the submarine wastewater diffuser, as well as the detailed study of the oceanography of the Reloncaví Sound, of which they have been obtained some records by means of satellite oceanography

Zoonosis con reservorios silvestres: Amenazas a la salud pública y a la economía/ Zoonoses with wildlife reservoirs: A threat to public health and the economy

Cabello C, Carlos; Cabello C, Felipe
2008-03-01

Resumen en inglés The world is experiencing an increase in emergent infections as a result of anthropogenic changes of the biosphere and globalization. Global warming unrestricted exploitation of natural resources such as forests and fisheries, urbanization, human migration, and industrialization of animal husbandry cause environmental destruction and fragmentation. These changes of the biosphere favor local emergence of zoonoses from their natural biotopes and their interaction with domes (mas) tic animals and human populations. Subsequently, international commerce, human and animal migration and travel, favor the dissemination of these zoonotic pathogens worldwide. Chile is undergoing an important degradation of many wild-life biotopes, affecting their diversity and contributing to the dissemination of zoonoses such as Chagas disease, Hantavirus, rabies, fish tapeworms, and marine vibriosis. Moreover, agents of many other zoonoses such as ¡eptospirosis, hydatidosis, salmonellosis, rabies, brucellosis and anthrax have been detected in different wild-life environments in the country. The intensification and accelerations of the anthropogenic deterioration of the biosphere in Chile, as results of the unrestricted utilization of natural resources and global climate change, suggests that emergence of new zoonoses in the near future will lead to important public health and economic problems. Forestalling of these problems will require active epidemiológica! surveillance of wild and domestic animals with a wide range of modern molecular and ancillary epidemiológica! tools. This also demands government and private sector (i.e., animal husbandry) intervention, funding and the collaboration of professionals in human and veterinary medicine with those in the environmental sciences including ecology, climatology and oceanography

Bashitialshaaer, Raed; Persson, Kenneth M; Larson, Magnus

Seawater desalination constitutes an important source for water supply to the population bordering the Arabian Gulf, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Red Sea. Desalination has advantages and disadvantages which may depend on the region, location, technology, impact and amount of fresh water production...

Environmental Assessment of Brine Discharge Including Wastewater Collection in the Arabian Gulf

Bashitialshaaer, Raed; Flyborg, Lena; Persson, Kenneth M

The environmental effects of brine discharge in the Arabian/Persian Gulf have been assessed. The Arabic Gulf is a wide and shallow system having a horizontal shear dominance. The management choice of mixing brine with wastewater to reduce the salt content in the discharge has also been considered. A...
