Resumen en español Presentamos un caso de tumor vesical con diferenciación pseudosarcomatosa del estroma. Son extremadamente raros (sólo se había descrito 78 casos en el mundo hasta el año 2001). También son llamados carcinosarcomas heterólogos, dentro de los cuales se encuentran los llamados carcinosarcomas con células gigantes tipo osteoclasto, que se caracterizan por ser positivos para vimentina y fosfatasa ácida y negativos para marcadores epiteliales (citoqueratinas de bajo peso y lisozima). Resumen en inglés We report a case of neoplasm of the urinary bladder with pseudosarcomatous stromal differentiation. Heterologous carcinosarcomas are extremly rare malignant neoplasms (seventy-eight cases have been previonsly described). This is a case of carcinoma containing numerous osteoclast type giant cells that stained for vinmentin and acid phosphatose and were negative for cytokeratin and lysozyme.

Leucemia mielomonocítica aguda y drepanocitosis no tratada con hidroxiurea: A propósito de un caso/ Acute Melanocytic Leukemia and Drepanocytosis non-treated with hydroxyurea a case report

Resumen en español Las enfermedades malignas asociadas a la anemia drepanocítica han sido reportadas previamente en un reducido número de pacientes, con el advenimiento de la terapia con hidroxiurea se ha observado un incremento en el riesgo de cáncer en estos enfermos; en nuestro caso clínico no se recoge el antecedente de ingestión de este medicamento. Paciente masculino de 25 años de edad, que acude con crisis hepática, con aumento de ictericia y bilirrubina a expensas de la direc (mas) ta, valores elevados de la transaminasa, hepatomegalia y caída de las cifras de hemoglobina a 40 g/L, blastos de un diámetro de 25 mc, granulares, algunos con núcleos de aspecto monocitoide, componente monocítico en periferia igual a 15%, conteo de leucocitos 120 x109/l,medulograma 80% de células blásticas, componente monocítico mayor del 20%, concluyéndose como Leucemia Mielomonocítica Aguda (LMA M4) según estudios citoquímicos diagnósticos además de un aumento de la lisozima y muramidasa superior a 13 mg lis/ml de plasma (Na acetatoesterasas ) positivo (NASA). Se realiza la plasmaféresis y la exanguinotransfusión haciendo dos recambios con amplia hidratación sin respuesta satisfactoria; el paciente fallece el tercer día del diagnóstico debido a Insuficiencia Respiratoria Aguda. Por lo inusual que resulta y por no existir casos reportados en la literatura Internacional de Síndrome Mieloproliferativo Agudo asociado a la Drepanocitosis no tratados con hidroxiurea, los autores presentan este caso clínico. Resumen en inglés Malignant diseases related to sickle-cell anemia have been previously reported in a reduced number of patients, the risk of suffering from cancer in those patients have increased with the advent of the hydroxyurea treatment. In this case no evidence of being taken this medication was proved. A 25-years old male presenting hepatic crisis, jaundice, hyperbilirubinemia, high levels of transaminase, hepatomegaly and low red blood cell counts (40 g/l), blast cells of 25 µm in (mas) diameter, granular cell presenting nucleus of monocytic-like cells (some of them), monocytic component in periphery equal to 15 %, leucocytes counts 120x10(9)/l, medullogram: 80 % of blast cells, monocytic component greater than 20 %, concluded as Acute Myelomonocytic Leukemia (AML M4) diagnostic cyto-chemical studies showed an increase of lysozyme and muramidase higher than 13 mg lis/ml of plasma (a positive Na acetatoesterases). A plasmapheresis and ex-transfusion and two rechanges, deep rehydration. No satisfactory response was observed and the patient died on the third day with a diagnose of acute respiratory insufficiency. Because of this unsual disorder and no other cases described by the medical literature as an Acute Myeloproliferative Syndrome in association to Drepanocytosis non-treated with Hydroxyurea motivated the authors to present this case report.

Respuestas inmunológicas y de enzimas antioxidantes en la ostra perla Pinctada imbricata (Mollusca: Pteridae) expuesta a niveles subletales de fuel oil nº6

Resumen en portugués Avaliou-se as respostas imunológicas e de sistemas enzimáticos antioxidantes que participam no controle de toxicidade de oxido radicais na ostra pérola Pinctada imbricata, depois da exposição aguda (7d) a 25 e 100% da fracção solúvel de Fuel Oil Nº6 (FSA), uma fonte de hidrocarburos poli-aromáticos e de metais pesados em ecossistemas marinhos. A atividade de lisozimas na glândula digestiva e a fagocitosis nos hemocitos foram determinadas como respostas imunoló (mas) gicas humoral e celular, respectivamente, usando leveduras mortas por calor como antígeno para o ensaio da fagocitosis. A viabilidade e número total de hemocitos também foram determinados. As enzimas antioxidantes glutationa transferasa (GST), glutationa reductasa (GR), glutationa peroxidasa (GPx) e catalasa (CAT) foram avaliadas em extratos de glândula digestiva e manto. Na glândula digestiva, a ex-WSF treatments resulted in significant increases of GST and CAT. In the mantle, both experimental treatments increased GPx and decreased GST activity, while CAT was not affected. Immunological indicators were not affected by the treatments, excepting cellular viability which decreased under exposure to 100% WSF. The results suggest that the antioxidant enzymes in the digestive gland and mantle of posição a FSA incrementou significativamente as atividades de GST e CAT. No manto se produziu um aumento na atividade de GPx e um descenso nas atividades de GST e GR, enquanto que CAT não foi afetada. A exceção da viabilidade celular à exposição de 100% FSA, os indicadores imunológicos não foram afetados pelo contaminante. Os resultados mostram a sensibilidade das enzimas antioxidantes da glândula digestiva e manto à exposição subletal aguda de Fuel Oil Nº6, sugerindo um aumento no fluxo de oxiradicais e possíveis manifestações bioquímicas prejudiciais associadas com estresse oxidativo em ambos tecidos. Estes parâmetros podem ser utilizados como ferramentas potenciais para o estudo de toxicidade de contaminantes no meio marinho. Resumen en inglés The immune and antioxidant enzyme defenses in pearl oyster Pinctada imbricata were evaluated after shotterm (7d) exposure to 25 and 100% watersoluble fraction (WSF) of Fuel Oil Nº6, a source of polyaromatic hydrocarbon and heavy metal contamination of marine ecosystems. Lysozyme activity in the digestive gland and the phagocytic activity of hemocytes were measured as humoral and cellular immunological responses, respectively, using heat killed yeast cells as antigen for (mas) the phagocytosis assay. The viability and total number of hemocytes were recorded. The detoxifying enzymes Glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR) and catalase (CAT) were evaluated from the digestive gland and mantle extracts. In the digestive gland the exposure to P. imbricata are sensitive to short-term exposure to Fuel Oil Nº6, suggesting an increased oxiradical flux and biochemical manifestations of oxidative injury in both tissues. These parameters should be considered as potential tools for the biomonitoring of marine environmental contamination.

Immobilized lysozyme protein on fibrous medium: Preliminary results for microfiltration applications

Resumen en inglés The protein lysozyme was deposited onto a permeable support comprising chemically functionalized glass fiber. The main objective of this study was to set a stable organic net with no effect on the medium bed permeability and a preliminary test the activity of this enzyme under immobilized conditions. The film formation is followed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) surface imaging. The effect on the bacteria Escherichia coli was tested using a simple microfiltration column. (mas) The filtration results pointed around 75% removal of bacteria in the effluent when compared to the influent concentration. The removal mechanism is assumed as being essentially due biointeraction. The surface polarity characteristics of the formed film were also considered as playing an important role, suggesting an electrostatic interaction mechanism in the microorganism removal

Resumen en inglés Of the proteins present in the egg albumin, ovalbumin, ovotransferrin and lysozyme have the most important bactericidal properties. However, such properties have not been reported for egg albumen of the sea turtle Lepidochelys olivacea. The objective of this study was to determine the bactericidal activity of egg white of L. olivacea at different concentrations. The results showed both a bactericidal effect on Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus (mas) saprophyticus and Micrococcus luteus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae), as well as a proliferative effect on Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and M. luteus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, K. pneumoniae and Pasteurella multocida)
