2006-01-01

The program includes a database with accepted values from the literature in order to compare the values calculated with the models. For each datum point the program gives the absolute and relative deviations. For each fluid and family of fluids, the temperature range is listed, the absolute and relative deviations are obtai (mas) ned, and the temperature at which the highest deviation is found is indicated. Besides, graphics are generated to display the data together with the model predictions. The validity and accuracy of eight analytical expressions based on the corresponding state principle to predict the saturation liquid density of aldehydes, ketones, and four alcohol families have been tested

2004-12-01

Resumen en inglés Some primitive meteorites are carbon-rich objects containing a variety of organic molecules that constitute a valuable record of organic chemical evolution in the universe prior to the appearance of microorganisms. Families of compounds include hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, amino acids, amines, amides, heterocycles, phosphonic acids, sulfonic acids, sugar-related compounds and poorly defined high-molecular weight macromolecules. A variety o (mas) f environments are required in order to explain this organic inventory, including interstellar processes, gas-grain reactions operating in the solar nebula, and hydrothermal alteration of parent bodies. Most likely, substantial amounts of such organic materials were delivered to the Earth via a late accretion, thereby providing organic compounds important for the emergence of life itself, or that served as a feedstock for further chemical evolution. This review discusses the organic content of primitive meteorites and their relevance to the build up of biomolecules.

2004-04-01

Resumen en inglés The present paper is aimed at studying the evaluation and quality control of the homeopathic tincture of Artemisia absinthium L. cultivated under Cuba's conditions. It is a widely used species and it has a renowned therapeutic value. The aerial and fresh flowered parts of this plant were used during the research. 13 batches of tincture were obtained according to the French school's method. The following quality indicators were established at a titer of ethanol 65 % v/v: o (mas) rganoleptic characteristics, capillary image, refraction index, relative density, pH, titer of ethanol and percentage of dry residual. Identification tests were made to determine the presence of bicyclic ketones, phenols and turbidity. A profile of the tincture was standardized by thin layer chromatography. Its quality indicators were within the limits established by the pharmacopeias taken as reference in all the batches obtained. A study was conducted to determine the time of useful life of the tincture during a year at room temperature in ambar glass flasks of 30 mL. It was proved that it kept its optimum characteristics under these conditions and that its microbial count was below the permissible levels during the whole experiment. These results show that it is really possible to obtain this tincture in Cuba with a quality similar to that demanded by the official homeopathic pharmacopeias.

Resumen en inglés The lipids peroxidation is a complex process, where unsaturated fatty acids react with molecular oxygen by a mechanism of chain reaction via free radicals, form hidroperoxides which are degraded to a variety of products like alkenals, hidroxialquenals, ketones, alkenos, and others, which can be quantified by different methodologies, like malondialdehyde (MDA), a final product of the degradation of fatty acids. In the present work we determined the susceptibility of low de (mas) nsity lipoproteins to be oxidized, in two populations one normal (n=30) between 25-35 years and other with diabetes type 2 (n=25) between 25-50 years, without previous treatment of antioxidant. The extraction of the LDL by ultracentrifugation, oxidized in vitro, and then MDA was determined by the thiobarbituric acid method. The results of malondialdehyde in the normal population was between 0,77 to 1,17mumol/L and in the diabetics population from 1,47 to 2,11 mumol/L with stadistic difference between both population. In conclusion, the normal values of MDA are from 0,77 to 1,17mumol/L, greater values could be indicative of additional risk in these patients.

Malformaciones congénitas en los hijos de madres diabéticas/ Congenital malformations in the offspring of diabetic mothers

Nazer H, Julio; Ramírez F, Rodrigo
2000-09-01

Resumen en inglés The offspring of diabetic mothers have a 10 times higher frequency of congenital malformations and 5 times higher frequency of spontaneous abortions. Since the discovery of insulin, the prognosis of pregnancies has improved, both for the mother and the offspring. However, the prevalence of congenital malformations at birth has not decreased significantly. The embriological process that leads to anomalies in the offspring of diabetic mothers probably occurs between 6 and 8 (mas) weeks of gestation. According to animal experiments, hyperglycemia, ketones and free radicals may be involved in the genesis of malfomations, but different strains of rats respond differently to these potential teratogenic agents. Possibly, a higher genetic susceptibility towards congenital malformations also plays a role in diabetic women. Therefore, although the intimate mechanism producing malformations in the offspring of diabetic women is not known, several strategies to decrease the prevalence of malformations in these women, such as the use of antioxidants, are being tested
