Resumen en inglés Objective and methods: The number and proportion of cases in the HIV registry of Navarre (Spain) that were residents of this region were quantified, according to the census and the healthcare card database. Results: Of the 2,385 persons diagnosed with HIV infection to 2003, only 1,610 (67.5%) were residents of Navarre. The rate of HIV cases diagnosed among residents in Navarre was over 90 cases per million between 1994 and 1998, with values similar to those of Switzerland (mas) . In contrast with the time-trend in other European countries, the time-trend in Navarre decreased from 1994 to 2003. Since 2000 the rate of new HIV cases in Navarre has been lower than rates in Portugal, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Conclusion: To prevent overestimation of the number of HIV infections, cases duplicated between regions should be excluded. This could be achieved by a national HIV surveillance system.

Resumen en inglés The decade running from 1598 to 1609, well-known as Pax Hispanica, witnessed one of the greatest moments in the new system of political relations emerged in Europe. The defence of dynasty and catholic religion, basic ideas of the foreign policy under Philip II, were important issues under Philip III, but now they shared primacy with others such as strategic and commercial matters. The peace with England was reached, after some important attempts to occupy the island of Ir (mas) eland. The truce with the Dutch came after some costly and long wars led by Spínola, with the objective of recovering the Spanish presence in land. Whether those peaces were "necessary" due to the finantial and military bankrupt, or part of an "organised strategy" so that the country could recuperate and continue the fight in the future, we can affirm that the agreements signed in those moments had serious drawbacks for Spain. When the political and military circumstances were favorable those agreements should be reviewed.

Características clínicas de los pacientes positivos para VIH que consultaron por primera vez al Hospital Central de Maputo (Mozambique), diferencias entre la situación de África y la de Colombia/ Clinical characteristics of HIV positive patients in their first consultation at the Central Hospital in Maputo (Mozambique), differences between Africa and Colombia

MARTÍNEZ, ALEXANDER ROCUTS; CALDERÓN, TANIA PATRICIA; CORTÉS, JORGE ALBERTO
2007-09-01

To learn about the clinical and laboratorial characteristics of patients that came for their first visit to the outpatient care facility dedicated exclusively to HIV patients at the Central Hospital in Maputo, Mozambique, and to discuss the similarities and differences with Colombia. Materials and methodology. Information was collected from charts of patients with positive HIV serology (Uni-Gold, Triniti Biotech, PLC, Ireland) between July 9 and September 13, (mas) 2004, who had been evaluated clinically during the same period. Data was analyzed using Excel 2003. Results. Out of 458 patients, 242 (54.5%) were evaluated by physicians. Most of the individuals were between 20 and 49 years of age (average, 34.5 years). Most of the patients were female (n = 142, 58.7%) with an average of 31 years. 45% (n = 109) of the charts had complete clinical information registered. We found a high prevalence of Kaposi’ sarcoma both in males and females (20%). Only 140 patients (57.9%) of the total had a CD4 count on their charts at least a month and a half after their first clinical evaluation; only 18 of them (12.8%) where in stage A infection while more than half (n = 74, 53%) had values below 200 cells per µl and, out of these, only 32% had stage C infection. Conclusion. Patients on their first clinical visit came to the outpatient clinic in advanced stages of the infection and most had already AIDS. Even though the epidemiological situation of HIV in Colombia is better than in Mozambique, there are similar cultural situations and the HIV trend shows a higher prevalence in the male population which is shifting to the female population, this being the rule for Mozambique. Efforts for HIV infection prevention should be intensified and it should be focused on HIV prevention in women at early ages and detection of individuals at early stages of infection.

Resumen en inglés As a result of hunger, poverty and lack of political and religious liberties in Ireland, a great number of Irish immigrants arrived to Argentina in the mid of the nineteenth century. Still nowadays, descendents of those immigrants continue to celebrate and commemorate Irish festivities and national days, to participate in Irish-argentine institutions founded by their ancestors and sharing hobbies in Irish clubs. The present article intends to analyze through two historic (mas) figures (Father Fahy and Admiral Brown), the way in which these people, joined in what they call "community", symbolically recreate the past, being able to legitimate themselves in time and space, joining their present with both pasts -the argentine and the Irish pasts- and being able to construct a dual identity that, without forgetting costumes and traditions inherited by their Irish routes, goes beyond "the Irish" to amalgamate with and place into the nation that adopted and sheltered their parents and grandparents.

SIMULACIÓN MATEMÁTICA DEL PROCESO DE SECADO DE LA GRACILARIA CHILENA (GRACILARIA CHILENSIS)/ MATHEMATICAL SIMULATION OF DRYING PROCESS OF CHILEAN GRACILARIA (GRACILARIA CHILENSIS)

Vega Gálvez, Antonio; Tello Ireland, Cristian; Lemus Mondaca, Roberto
2007-04-01

Three empirical models are used for the mathematic modeling (Newton, Henderson-Pabis & Page). During the experiment, only a falling rate period is obse (mas) rved, hence the Fick's second law equation is used to estimate the effective water diffusivity. The drying process shows final moisture contents between 0.096 g water/g d.b. and 0.061 g water/g d.b. for 30ºC and 70ºC, respectively. Both diffusivity and kinetic parameters k1, k2 and k3 of the proposed models show dependence on temperature, and when being evaluated by the Arrhenius equation, activation energies of 39.92, 33.85, 33.49 and 33.83 kJ·mol-1 are obtained, respectively. According to the statistical analyses used (r2, SSE, RMSE and X²), the Page model shows the best fit quality on experimental data, thus being considered an excellent tool for the kinetic modeling of industrial drying processing of Gracilaria chilensis and the estimation of drying time at different temperatures, in order to achieve a commercial moisture content to be acceptable abroad
