Resumen en inglés The reader is introduced to "the problem of time" present inherently in general relativity. A review of the conceptual fundamentals of both special and general relativity is done with the aim of fixing the conceptual and technical bases required to make the description of the "problem of time". Once this done, it is emphasized the fact that in the context of general relativity the coordinates (or better, the atlas A) which label the points of the manifold do not have per (mas) se physical meaning and that this fact requires a suitable form (distinct to the one used in special relativity) of describing the evolution of the degrees of freedom of the dynamical variables involved in a way compatible with the diffeomorphism covariance of the theory.

Leibniz, Mach y Einstein: Tres objeciones al espacio absoluto de Newton/ Leibniz, Mach and Einstein: Three objections to Newton´s absolute space

Cárdenas Castañeda, Leonardo
2009-12-01

Resumen en inglés This paper discusses the absolute character of Newton´s space. In particular, we intend. to debate the alleged ontological or substantivalist character of this view about space. To this end we appeal, in the first place, to Leibniz' argument in which he asserts as one of the implications of absolute space that there would not be way of showing the differences among parts of space since it will be uniform. Then, we will discuss Mach´s reply which defends the possibility (mas) of talking about space and inertia by appealing, not to absolute space but to its relational character, that is, that when dealing with inertia and space is pertinent to take into account the relationships in which different bodies stand one to the other. Lastly, we will show that for Einstein the relational character of space has important consequences both in the theory of special relativity and in theory of general relativity.

¿ES COMPATIBLE LA RELATIVIDAD CONCEPTUAL CON UN ESENCIALISMO GENUINO?

Cárdenas Castañeda, Leonardo
2007-09-01

Resumen en inglés This article is a response to Arango's paper (2006) on an essentialist metaphysics with the aggregate of conceptual relativity. In general, I show that the essentialists, among them Kripke, developed this notion based upon an equivocal than I believe dangerous. The point is that if essentialism is a theory that explains the existence of natural kinds independently of our patterns of individuation, their partisans should not appeal to examples that involve institutional fa (mas) cts. Due to this defect, the arguments of the essentialists are not satisfactory. I also intend to show two more faults of an essentialist theory. Firstly, I think that there is a conflation between the material mode of speech and orations of real objects. Finally, I explain why Arango commits an error in the assignment of a function.

EINSTEIN Y LA REALIDAD DEL ESPACIO: REALISMO Y CONVENCIONALISMO*

Guerrero Pino, Germán
2006-06-01

Resumen en inglés In this paper I expose a philosophical reflection about two issues that are closely related: the first one, the ontological implications on the physical reality of space-time and, the second one, the relation between theory and experience, both of them in the context of Einstein’s special and general theory of relativity. So I have him two aims. First, I explain the realism and conventionalism debate concerning the physical reality of space-time and, second, I consi (mas) der the physics theory-reality relationship. I examine these questions taking into account the Newton/Leibniz discussion on reality of the absolute space and the absolute time, and then from the relativistic view-point.
