Resumen en inglés In this work we present a systematic study of the effect of the increase of OH groups in alcohols and polyols of four carbon atoms on the conformational properties of β-lactoglobulin. The changes in the behavior of the aqueous solution of the protein by the addition of 1-butanol, 1,2-butanediol, 1,2,4-butanetriol y 1,2,3,4-butano-tetrol were determined by UV, far and near UV CD spectra and fluorescence spectroscopy at 298.15K. The results show that the largest modification ofprotein structure is due to butanol and the effect decreases as the number of OH groups increase.

Resumen en inglés FCC catalyst is made up of particles of complex composition where the main active component is a Y zeolite. This work presents the textural and structural results of a commercial USY zeolite which had been previously prepared from a set of catalysts with 7, 15, 25, 35 y 45% of active material and of the hydrothermally deactivated materials zeolite. The samples have been characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), 29Si NMR spectroscopy and nitrogen (mas) adsorption at 77K. From these results was found correlations between micropore volume and zeolite content and degree crystallinity and %zeolite. Also, it was found that an hydrothermal treatment at 1033 K with only 20% steam during 16 hours destroys the structural groups Si(2Al) and Si(3Al) as a reflection of the strongly dealumination of the zeolite component of the catalyst.

Resumen en inglés A description is given of the purification of B-phycoerythrin (B-PE) from the red microalga Rhodosorus marinus. Initially, phycobiliproteins were released from the microalgal cells by manual cellular fragmentation and sonication. B-PE was extracted with ammonium sulfate precipitation, and purified by anionic and size exclusion chromatography. Its purity was tested using indexes and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Spectroscopic characterization o (mas) f B-PE was performed by UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and circular dichroism. Rhodosorus marinus showed three types of phycobiliproteins: phycoerythrin, phycocyanin, and allophycocyanin. The purified B-PE showed a purity ratio (A545/A280) of 4.8, characteristic peaks at 540 and 562 nm with a shoulder at 498 nm, fluorescence emission maximum at 578 nm, and a secondary structure almost stable with pH changes. B-PE was found to be the predominant pigment in R. marinus and this red microalga could be a viable option for the recovery of this chromoprotein.

The personnel working in dentistry, exposed chronically mercury steam, constitutes population in toxicological risk. The objective of this work was to determine mercury present in dentistry personnel of Venezuelan hospital, for evaluating the occupational risk. Blood and urine samples were collected of the personnel working in this Unit Dentistry, the days Monday and Friday of every (mas) week during four weeks. The mercury content was determined by means of spectroscopy of absorption and atomic fluorescence with cold steam. By means of variance analysis the hypotheses related to the similarity in the values of mercury for different analyzed human groups and different periods from sampling were proven statistically. Mercury levels in urine samples of analyzed personnel are underneath the level threshold reviewed by the Health World Organization in 50 μg/L (ppb) Hg. 21% of evaluated population present levels superior to value threshold of 15 ppb of Hg in blood samples. Blood and urine mercury content between the labor groups were significantly differences. Mercury content present in blood samples of 21% of evaluated population reveals this group is in toxicological risk to metal, recommending more exhaustive analyses in these people
