Resumen en español En este trabajo se presenta una síntesis de las técnicas analíticas más utilizadas en la caracterización mineral, y su aplicación a la exploración y explotación minera. Las técnicas han sido clasificadas en 2 grupos. El primer grupo incluye a las técnicas de mayor uso ("técnicas convencionales"): (i) difracción de polvo de rayos X y difracción cuantitativa de rayos X, (ii) Microscopio electrónico de barrido con analizador de energías (SEM-EDS), (iii) catodo (mas) luminiscencia, y iv) microsonda electrónica (EMPA). El segundo grupo abarca un grupo de técnicas menos accesible, y mucho más caras, ("técnicas no convencionales"): (i) Particle Induced X-Ray Emission (Micro-PIXE), (ii) Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS, (iii) Laser-Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). La mayor parte de la compilación esta dedicada a las técnicas convencionales (DRX, SEM-EDS y EMP), las cuales pueden ser de mayor impacto en el campo de la pequeña minería. Resumen en inglés This paper is an overview of the main analytical techniques used in mineral characterization, as well as their application to mining exploration and exploitation. Two groups of techniques have been established. The first group includes more frequently used techniques ("conventional techniques"): (i) X-ray powder diffraction and quantitative XRD, (ii) scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), (iii) cathodoluminiscence, and iv) electron pr (mas) obe microanalysis (EPMA). In contrast, the second group comprises less commonly used and more expensive techniques ("unconventional techniques"): (i) Particle Induced X-Ray Emission (Micro-PIXE), (ii) Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), (iii) Laser-Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The paper covers mainly the fundamentals of the most commonly used analytical techniques in mineral characterization (DRX, SEM-EDS, EMPA), and information on applications of these tools in mining exploration, which can be of major interest in small mining operations.

Resumen en español En este estudio se emplearon dos métodos de síntesis para la obtención de Hidroxiapatita (HA). Las síntesis se llevaron acabo mezclando sales de calcio y fósforo a 25 ºC. La suspensión obtenida se envejeció, sin agitación, por tiempos entre 3 y 21 días a 25 ºC, y a temperaturas de 90, 125 y 150 ºC por 3 días, con el fin de estudiar la influencia del tiempo y la temperatura en la cristalización del material. Los productos se caracterizaron por Difracción de (mas) Rayos X (DRX), Espectroscopía de Infrarrojo (IR), Microscopía Electrónica de Transmisión y Barrido (MET y MEB) y Espectroscopia de Emisión Atómica por inducción de plasma acoplado (ICP-AES, por sus siglas en inglés: Inductive Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry), para el análisis químico. Por ambos métodos se obtuvo Hidroxiapatita (HA) cristalina con tamaños de partículas inferiores a 100 nm y una relación Ca/P entre 1,50 y 1,75. Estos resultados dan a los materiales obtenidos buenas caracteristicas para ser empleados en aplicaciones médicas. Resumen en inglés Two methods were employed in this study in order to obtain Hydroxyapatite (HA). The processes were carried out mixing salts of calcium and phosphor. The suspension was aged, without agitation, from 3 to 21 days at 25 ºC and they were aged at 90, 125 and 150 ºC for 3 days, in order to study the influence of time and temperature in the material’s crystallization. The products were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Transmission and Scan (mas) ning Electron Microscopy (TEM and SEM), and Inductive Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) for chemical analysis. From both methods crystalline HA was obtained, with particle sizes under 100 nm and a Ca/P ratio in the range of 1.50 and 1.75. These results give the obtained materials good characteristics for medical applications.

Resumen en español El presente trabajo contempla el estudio bajo condiciones hidrotérmicas en medio alcalino de la síntesis de zeolitas, utilizando como materia prima caolín previamente seleccionado entre diversos aluminosilicatos de procedencia venezolana y el cual fue calcinado durante 1,5 horas a la temperatura de 700°C. La optimización de la síntesis se llevó a cabo variando parámetros como concentración de NaOH 2,0 M, temperatura y tiempo de cristalización 90°C durante 3 hor (mas) as. Con fines comparativos, se llevó a cabo la síntesis de la zeolita A pura, siguiendo el procedimiento de la Asociación Internacional de Zeolitas (AIZ). Todos los productos fueron caracterizados por difracción de rayos X (DRX), microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB), análisis químico elemental por espectrometría óptica de emisión atómica con plasma inductivamente acoplado (EEA-PIA), y espectroscopia infrarrojo (IR-TF). Por otra parte, las aplicaciones de las películas de zeolita sintetizada en dichas condiciones saturadas con calcio y sodio, por separado, y modificada por los surfactantes catiónico denominado bromuro de cetiltrimetilamonio (CTAB) y no iónico llamado Triton X-100, para la posterior modificación de la superficie electródica de carbón vítreo (CV) en la detección por oxidación de compuestos fenólicos, por voltametría cíclica, presentaron mejoras en la respuesta voltamétrica a pH 9,2 y 9,6 comparadas con la del carbón vítreo sin modificar, atribuido a los efectos del pH y de los surfactantes en la superficie de la zeolita Resumen en inglés This work concerns the study of the synthesis of zeolites under hydrothermal conditions in an alkaline medium, using, as raw material, kaolin previously selected from various aluminosilicates from Venezuela and which was heated for 1.5 hours at a temperature of 700°C. The optimization of the synthesis was conducted by varying parameters such as concentration of NaOH 2.0 M, temperature and time of crystallization at 90°C for 3 hours. For purposes of comparison, we carrie (mas) d out the synthesis of pure zeolite A, according to the procedure of the International Association of Zeolites (IZA). All products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental chemical analysis by emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). On the other hand, the applications of zeolite films synthesized in these conditions saturated with calcium and modified by surfactants named cetyltrimethylamonium bromide (CTAB) and non-ionic named Triton X-100, for the subsequent modification of the glassy carbon electrode surface (GC) in the detection by oxidation of phenolic compounds, by cyclic voltammetry, showed improvements in the voltammetric response to pH 9.2 and 9.6 compared with that of the unaltered glassy carbon, attributed to the effects of the surfactants and pH on the surface of the zeolite
