EVALUACIÓN DE CELDAS DE COMBUSTIBLE DE ELECTROLITO POLIMÉRICO CON ÁNODOS Pt-M (M= Sn, Ru e Ir) PARA LA OXIDACIÓN DE H2 Y CO/ PROTON EXCHANGE MEMBRANE FUEL CELLS EVALUATION WITH Pt-M (M= Sn, Ru and Ir) ANODES FOR H2 AND CO OXIDATION

Resumen en español Se evaluó el desempeño de celdas de combustible de electrolito polimérico alimentadas con hidrógeno, CO y una mezcla H2-(2%)CO, utilizando oxígeno en el cátodo. Para la oxidación de los combustibles, se probaron seis catalizadores: Pt, Pt85Ru15, Pt50Ru50, Pt90Ir10, Pt50Ir50 y Pt90Sn10. Como catalizador en el cátodo se usó platino puro. Todos los catalizadores fueron soportados en carbón Vulcan XC-72R ®. La composición de los catalizadores preparados fue verifi (mas) cada en un Microscopio Electrónico de Barrido (SEM) y las pruebas de desempeño de las celdas construidas se realizaron mediante curvas corriente-potencial. Los resultados muestran que la técnica de preparación de los electrodos produce mezclas catalíticas con composiciones muy cercanas a las nominales. Las mezclas catalíticas Pt-Ir son las que presentan el desempeño más bajo para las condiciones evaluadas en este trabajo. La mezcla Pt90Sn10 presentó un desempeño similar al del platino a bajas corrientes cuando la celda de combustible fue alimentada con hidrógeno puro y superó el desempeño de los demás catalizadores cuando la celda se alimentó con H2/(2%)CO. El electrodo Pt90Sn10 pierde actividad catalítica cuando se emplea CO puro. Resumen en inglés The performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells fed with hydrogen, CO and a hydrogen - (2%) CO mixture, using oxygen in the cathode was evaluated. Six catalysts were tested for the fuels oxidation: Pt, Pt85Ru15, Pt50Ru50, Pt90Ir10, Pt50Ir50 y Pt90Sn10. Cathode catalyst was pure Pt. All catalyst were supported on Vulcan XC-72R ® carbon. The catalyst compositions were verified using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the performance tests were carried out thro (mas) ugh current - potential curves. The results showed that the preparation method produces catalyst compositions very close to those expected. Pt-Ir catalytic mixture show the lowest performance under the conditions followed in this work. Pt90Sn10 mixture presented a performance similar to Pt at low current values when the fuel cell was fed with pure hydrogen and it showed the best performance among the other catalysts when the cell was fed with H2/(2%)CO. The Pt90Sn10 electrode lost its catalytic activity when pure CO is used.
