Conductividad térmica en metales, semiconductores, dieléctricos y materiales amorfos/ Thermal conductivity in metals, semiconductors, dielectrics and amorphous materials

Resumen en español Se estudia la física de la conductividad térmica y sus aspectos más importantes en una variedad de materiales. La conductividad térmica es influenciada por diferentes mecanismos de dispersión de fonones o electrones, los cuales limitan el transporte de energía térmica en el sólido. La conductividad térmica a una temperatura cercana al 80% de la temperatura de fundición es elevada en metales (~300 W/mK) y en semiconductores (~22 W/mK); es baja en dieléctricos (~ (mas) 6 W/mK) y es muy baja en materiales amorfos (~1,5 W/mK). En particular, en materiales amorfos la muy baja conductividad térmica es consecuencia del desorden atómico y de la ocurrencia de procesos de dispersión asociados a la existencia de potenciales de pozo doble asimétricos y a la presencia de modos vibracionales localizados. El propósito de este estudio es revisar las teorías existentes para explicar la conductividad térmica en sólidos y así identificar aspectos o procesos físicos relevantes en el régimen de muy altas temperaturas y antes de la temperatura de fundición, que nos permita articular las conclusiones en un referencial que nos sirva de guía para la especificación y preparación de materiales que puedan ser usados en la elaboración de la nueva generación de barreras térmicas. Nuestro interés se restringe al estudio de la conductividad térmica en sólidos dieléctricos a muy altas temperaturas, en donde hemos encontrado que la contribución de los fonones con un camino libre medio del orden de las dimensiones de las constantes de la red es muy importante y en algunos casos también se logra identificar una contribución relevante por parte de los electrones y/o fonones localizados (fractones localizados). Resumen en inglés We studied the physics underlying thermal conductivity and the most important thermal properties in a myriad of materials. Thermal conductivity is determined by different phonons or electron scattering mechanisms that limit the transport of thermal energy inside the solid. For the sake of the analysis, thermal conductivity close to 80% of melting point in metals is elevated (~300 W/mK) and low in semiconductors (~22 W/mK); is lower in dielectrics (~6 W/mK) and is very low (mas) in amorphous materials (~1,5 W/mK). The very low thermal conductivity in amorphous materials is a consequence of the atomic disorder, the occurrence of scattering processes associated with the existence of asymmetric double-well potential and localized vibrational modes. The purpose of this study is to review existing theories explaining the thermal conductivity of solids and so identify issues or relevant physical processes with regard to conditions of very high temperature and near to the melting point that could be important when studying thermal conductivity. This would allow us to place the findings in a framework that could guide the functionalization and preparation of materials that can be used in the elaboration of the new generation of thermal barrier coatings. Our interest is restricted to the study of thermal conductivity at very high temperatures in dielectric solids, where we found that the contribution of phonons with a free path of the order of an interatomic spacing is very important and in some cases we also found relevant the contribution of electrons and/or localized phonons (fractons).

Fenómenos de relajación interfacial en compuestos epoxi/aluminio/ Interfacial relaxation phenomena in epoxy/aluminum composites

Resumen en español En este trabajo se estudiaron los fenómenos de relajación de materiales compuestos polímero/metal en función de la cantidad de partículas de metálicas incorporadas (aluminio). El concepto de módulo eléctrico fue empleado para analizar los procesos de relajación tipo Debye y Maxwell-Wagner-Sillar, debido a que presenta varias ventajas con respecto al análisis clásico de la parte real (ε') e imaginaria (ε") de la permitividad. El material compuesto se o (mas) btuvo por colada y posterior curado a 100ºC por 2 horas, previa mezcla en un mezclador ultrasónico de ambos componentes. La densidad de las muestras se determinó por el método de Arquímedes, mientras que las fracciones en volumen se establecieron mediante termogravimetría. Las mediciones de propiedades dieléctricas se realizaron en el rango de frecuencias de 25Hz a 1Mhz y temperatura de 30 a 120ºC. Por último, la microestructura fue observada mediante Microscopía Electrónica de Barrido. Las micrografías revelaron que la incorporación del metal no incrementó en forma significativa la cantidad de defectos o la porosidad. Los resultados del análisis dieléctrico mostraron que los materiales poseen muy buenas propiedades dieléctricas a bajas temperaturas, y que los fenómenos de relajación son propios de la resina y modificados por la influencia de las cargas metálicas debido a fenómenos de relajación interfacial tipo MWS. Resumen en inglés Interfacial dielectric relaxation has been studying in composite materials made with epoxy resin and aluminum. Electric modulus, which has been proposed for the description of systems with relaxation process, presents advantages in comparison to the classic approach of the real and imaginary part of dielectric permittivity. In composite polymer materials, relaxation phenomena at the low frequency region are attributed to the heterogeneity of the system. Epoxy was diluted (mas) using tetrahydrofuran as solvent in order to reduce matrix viscosity and to facilitate the mixing step. The fillers were mixed with the resin using an ultrasonic mixer during 4 minutes. The composites were prepared pouring them into suitable moulds and cured at 100ºC for 2 hours. Density was measured by the Arquimedes method and real volume fraction of each composite was found by termogravimetric analysis. Dielectric measurements were performed from 25 Hz to 1 MHz and 20 ºC to 120 ºC. It was found that the epoxy - aluminum composites had higher permittivity and a strong dependence with filler concentration. Relaxation processes were influenced by the epoxy resin near their Tg, while metal content modified the real permittivity values. Interfacial polarisation processes known as Maxwell-Wagner-Sillar were generated by particles. This process is attributed to the accumulation of charges on the interface that helped to displace peaks to higher frequencies.

Resumen en español La microscopía de fuerza electrostática es una técnica de medición de propiedades eléctricas locales de materiales. Las mediciones de gradiente de fuerza eléctrica sobre muestras dieléctricas son sensibles no sólo a la distribución de carga inicial en la misma sino también a la carga inducida por la punta de prueba conductora. Interpretar las contribuciones de cada efecto de forma independiente constituye un reto vigente de la técnica. Se introduce un modelo te (mas) órico que permite estudiar los efectos de carga e inducción para muestras y puntas de prueba con geometrías reales. El mismo modelo a partir de mediciones de gradiente de fuerza estima la carga inicial de la muestra. Las estimaciones de gradiente de fuerza reproducen mediciones experimentales realizadas en muestras dieléctricas cargadas. Resumen en inglés Electric force microscopy is a local technique for measuring electrical properties of materials. The electrostatic force gradient measurements on dielectric samples are sensitive not only to the initial charge distribution in the sample but also to the charge induced by the conductive bias cantilever. Interpreting the contribution of each single effect on the charge distribution images is a challenge in the existing EFM technique. Here, a theoretical model is introduced t (mas) o study the charge and induction effect on charged dielectric samples and commercial geometries for EFM tips. This model estimates the initial charge of the sample based on force gradient measurements. Gradient force results reproduce experimental measurements performed on electrets samples.

Evaluacion termica, mecanica y electrica de materiales compuestos cordierita-mullita

Resumen en inglés Commercially available cordierite and mullite powders were used to obtain cordierite and cordierite-30wt% mullite materials by attrition milling, uniaxial pressing and sintering. Cordierite powders were the coarse (D50 = 1.82 mum), medium (D50 = 0.9 mum) and fine (D50 = 0.45 mum) single granulometric fractions and binary mixtures of them. Mullite powder employed in composites was the 7 h-attrition milled one (D50 = 1.3 mum). Hardness (H V) and fracture toughness (K IC) we (mas) re measured by Vickers indentation techniques. Composites showed higher H V and K IC than cordierite matrices. In both materials, H V and K IC diminish with the increasing porosity. Dielectric constant (epsilon) and losses (tan delta) were determined at 1 MHz. An increase in epsilon and tan delta values was registered when mullite was present in composites with respect to cordierite material. Higher the porosity, epsilon was lower and tan delta increased. The thermal expansion coefficients (alpha) were determined up to 1000 °C resulting the alpha of the composite close to that of the silicon.

Resumen en español Los materiales basados en cordierita 2MgO 2Al 2 O 3 5SiO 2 son utilizados comúnmente en refractarios y procesos catalíticos a temperaturas superiores a los 500 grados Celsius; dichas aplicaciones requieren de alta resistencia al choque térmico, bajo coeficiente de expansión térmica, alta resistencia a la acción corrosiva de los gases, baja constante dieléctrica y buenas propiedades mecánicas. En el presente trabajo, se reporta la síntesis y caracterización (mas) de cordierita a partir de hidrogeles por la ruta de química coloidal de hidroxihidrogeles. Las materias primas fueron dispersadas mecánicamente en un equipo de alta cizalla del tipo rotor stator, allí mismo se llevó a cabo el proceso de gelación. Los polvos obtenidos en la etapa de secado fueron sinterizados mediante variaciones de tiempo y temperaturas: 1200, 1300 y 1350 grados Celsius. Se conformaron monolitos de cordierita y se caracterizaron mediante análisis microquímico, análisis térmico diferencial (DTA), difracción de rayos X (XRD), microscopía electrónica de barrido (SEM) y medidas de absorción de agua. En este estudio se disminuyeron las temperaturas de cristalización de la cordierita 2MgO 2A12 O3 5SiO2 la cual se produce hasta 1200 grados Celsius; bajo los procesos de sinterización se generan monolitos con una baja porosidad en función de la temperatura hasta los 1350 grados Celsius. Resumen en inglés Materials based on cordierite 2MgO 2A12 O3 5SiO2 are used for refractoriness and catalytic processes at temperatures above 500 Celsius degrees where high thermal shock resistance, low thermal expansion coefficient, high resistance to corrosion gas, low dielectric constant and good mechanical properties are required. In the present work, the synthesis of cordierite by a colloidal chemistry route forming hydroxyhydrogels is reported, which were dispersed mechanically with a (mas) rotor stator. The powders obtained were sintered with variation of time at 1200, 1300 and 1350 Celsius degrees. The monoliths were characterized by microchemical analysis, differential thermal analysis (DTA), Xray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and water absorption measurements. In this study the temperature of crystallization of cordierite of cordierite 2MgO 2A12 O3 5SiO2 was lowered which occurs at about 1200 degrees Celsius, and monoliths with low porosity were generated by sintering processes as a function of temperature, up to the 1350 degrees Celsius.
