Tectónica jurásica en Argentina y Chile: extensión, subducción oblicua, rifting, deriva y colisiones?/ Jurassic tectonics in Argentina and Chile: Extension, oblique subduction, rifting, drift and collisions?

Mpodozis, Constantino; Ramos, Victor A.
2008-12-01

Resumen en inglés The Jurassic history of southern South America shows a complex geologic evolution which is the result of different processes that began along the western Gondwana margin during the initial stages of Pangea breakup. Andean subduction along the Pacific continental margin began in the Early Jurassic, after a period of continental-scale extension and rifting, which peaked by the end of the Triassic in central and northern Argentina and Chile. Renewal of subduction was the res (mas) ult of an episode of ocean growth along a series of spreading centers between North and South America when the separation of these continents began as a consequence of the activity of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province hotspot. Motion along these spreading centers produced a component of oblique, SE-directed subduction along the western margin of South America and the reactivation of inherited orthogonal structural features as the N70°E trending Huincul ridge in the Neuquén Basin that was uplifted during Jurassic times. Subduction along the north-south trending Argentine-Chilean continental margin acelerated during the breakup between West and East Gondwana soon after the opening of the Indian Ocean, linked to the Karoo hot-spot. Subduction took place under extensional conditions probably associated with a negative trench roll-back, leading to the formation of a magmatic arc along the Coast Ranges from southern Peru to central Chile and, to the east, the Arequipa, Tarapacá and Neuquén extensional back-arc basins. In northern Patagonia, early Jurassic arc related magmatism occurred to the east of the present day Andean Cordillera along the short-lived (190-170 Ma) Subcordilleran Batholith and the associated Liassic intra arc basin. Arc magmatism ceased in northern Patagonia at ca 170 Ma to be replaced by huge volumes of Early to Middle Jurassic rhyolites and dacites of the Chon-Aike Large Igneous province produced as a result of crustal melting in an overheated crust during the initial stages of Gondwana breakup. Early rifting during Middle-Late Jurassic times took place in the Cañadón Asfalto Basin and the Late Jurassic Río Guenguel, Río Mayo and Río Senguerr basins, orthogonal to the continental margin as a consequence of the Weddell Sea opening. Acid magmatism was associated with widespread extension and culminated in the opening of the ocean-floored Rocas Verdes Basin. The causes of the cessation of magmatism in the Subcordilleran Batholith, the origin of the Chon Aike LIP and the rotation of the magmatic front towards the Patagonian Batholith around 150 Ma are still not well understood. Hypothesis linking this mutating tectonic scenario to the collision of exotic terranes against the Pacific margin of Patagonia during the early to middle Jurassic should be taken into consideration.

Resumen en inglés Objective: To assess the separate effects of age, sex, and experience on the risk of drivers aged 18-24 years being actively involved in a car collision in Spain from 1990 to 1999. Methods: For this matched case-control study, data were obtained from the Spanish Register of Traffic Crashes with Victims held by the General Directorate of Transport. The study population comprised all drivers involved in car collisions in which only one of the drivers committed a traffic inf (mas) raction. Drivers who committed infractions constituted the case group while non-infracting drivers involved in the same collision were their corresponding matched controls. Drivers with incomplete or inconsistent data were excluded and a total of 123 586 cases and 140 482 controls was studied. Crude and adjusted (for the effect of potential confounders) odds ratio (OR) were obtained for each combination of driver age (from 18 to 24 years old), sex and years in possession of a driving license (from 0 to 7). Results: For each category of age and years in possession of a driving license, OR estimates for men were usually higher than those for women. In men, crude and adjusted OR significantly decreased with increasing number of years in possession of a driving license for each age group. A similar but less clear trend was also observed for female drivers. After adjustment for the effect of the number of years in possession of a driving license, driver age did not seem to be strongly associated with the risk of being actively involved in a car collision. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the effect of inexperience is more important than that of age in explaining the higher risk of being involved in a traffic crash in the youngest drivers.

Sloterdijk y el imaginario de la Globalización; mundo sincrónico y conciertos de transferencia/ Sloterdijk and the imaginary of Globalization; Synchronous World and Concerts of Transference

Vásquez Rocca, Adolfo
2009-07-01

From the description of the successive processes of globalization, it is portrayed how this phenomenon -globalization- takes place from operations with remote effects and psycho-morphological implications. It considers how the epic motif of inclusiveness in the globe leads to the expansionist madness of Europe, transformed into profitable meanings. This triggers energetic visions which lead to nautical adventures. The posterior electronic Globalization gives rise to the p (mas) henomenon of global provincialism, e.g. a process of densification that implies a higher probability of encounters between the acting-agents of this space, whether in the form of transactions or collisions

Efectividad de las intervenciones de seguridad vial basadas en la evidencia: una revisión de la literatura/ Evidence-based effectiveness of road safety interventions: a literature review

Novoa, Ana M.; Pérez, Katherine; Borrell, Carme
2009-12-01

Resumen en inglés Introduction: Only road safety interventions with scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness should be implemented. The objective of this study was to identify and summarize the available evidence on the effectiveness of road safety interventions in reducing road traffic collisions, injuries and deaths. Methodology: All literature reviews published in scientific journals that assessed the effectiveness of one or more road safety interventions and whose outcome mea (mas) sure was road traffic crashes, injuries or fatalities were included. An exhaustive search was performed in scientific literature databases. The interventions were classified according to the evidence of their effectiveness in reducing road traffic injuries (effective interventions, insufficient evidence of effectiveness, ineffective interventions) following the structure of the Haddon matrix. Results: Fifty-four reviews were included. Effective interventions were found before, during and after the collision, and across all factors: a) the individual: the graduated licensing system (31% road traffic injury reduction); b) the vehicle: electronic stability control system (2 to 41% reduction); c) the infrastructure: area-wide traffic calming (0 to 20%), and d) the social environment: speed cameras (7 to 30%). Certain road safety interventions are ineffective, mostly road safety education, and others require further investigation. Conclusion: The most successful interventions are those that reduce or eliminate the hazard and do not depend on changes in road users' behavior or on their knowledge of road safety issues. Interventions based exclusively on education are ineffective in reducing road traffic injuries.

2007-12-01

In this publication a simple, but effective, throughput analysis for WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) operating according to the IEEE 802.11 a/b/g family of standards is presented. The influence of data packet sizes, device configuration parameters (RTS/CTS or basic access protocol, initial contention window, transmission rate) and the effect of the number of devices of the network are considered. The purpose of this study is to provide network administrators an insig (mas) ht of how network configuration parameters affect network performance. Results of this kind of analysis will provide an upper bound on network performance, since they do not consider the effect of collisions and electromagnetic interference

La "insoportable levedad" de lo urbano

Lacarrieu, Mónica
2007-08-01

This text has the objective of analysing the new place created by the symbolic dimension of the city. To undertake this, the startingpoint is that all practices generated in space are the complex and conflictive outcomes of social images and imaginaries, considering the relationships and differences generated between them. From this perspective, the close articulation between the organisation of urban images constructed on the basis of the 'weight' of cities -principally (mas) built heritage - and 'immaterial' cultural expressions is analysed. The latter has been recurrently associated with imaginaries, relegated to the field of'popular culture', also new urban images influenced by imaginaries of power, imaginaries of consensus and imaginaries in dispute. In this way, we will deal with the collisions, tensions and distensions that are produced between material and immaterial heritage, considering the place that they have occupied in the formation of cities, particularly Buenos Aires, in relation to urban images and imaginaries

Resumen en inglés Background: Cerebral injuries as a result of craniocerebral trauma are the most frequent cause of death in traffic collisions involving two-wheeled vehicles. In spite of the proven effectiveness of the use of the head protective devices to deaden injuries in the event of traffic collisions, some teenagers and youngsters do not use it. The main goal of this research is to identify the best predictors of helmet use among adolescents. Method: Transversal study of a populatio (mas) n of 874 young students of Secondary Education during the academic year 2005-06. The population object of study were students of 3rd and 4th year of the 6 public secondary schools of Gerona and only those present in class in the day of the data capture participated in the study. The participation was 74,6%. The data capture was carried out by means of a self-devised survey. An analysis of hierarchical logistical regression was also carried out. Results: Predictable variables of helmet use in motorcycle drivers: age (OR=0,56), safety as main reason for its use (OR=0,02), possession of driving license (OR=0,17), peer influence (OR=0,23) and family influence (OR=0,17). In passengers: age (OR=0,46), peer influence (OR=0,35) and safety as main reason for its use (OR=0,38) Conclusions: The variables that predict the use of the helmet in the motorcycles users are: age, being in possession of the license to drive motorcycles, wearing the helmet as a safety device and social reinforcement (friends and family).

Resumen en inglés The popularity of 802.11 wireless networks is based on the access control of the wireless medium. The greatest challenges this technology faces, however, are interference and collisions caused by users sharing the same coverage area. These two factors can result in a low throughput, even though the signal is transmitted at a high data transmission rate, or in low channel capacity when few users are transmitting. To solve these weaknesses, this work proposes a protocol tha (mas) t handles transmission rates dynamically to maximize the transmission success rate. Two schemes are proposed to address low throughput and low channel capacity. The first scheme dynamically monitors the channel in real time and increases or diminishes the transmission rate accordingly, while the second administers an optimal combination of transmission rates to minimize interference and collisions. Simulations show that the protocol improves traffic transmission in the network, as compared with fixed rated mechanisms used to access the wireless medium.

2003-05-01

Resumen en inglés ObjectivesTo identify the characteristics of mortality related to motor vehicle accidents in the Tunja-San Gil area (Colombia) in the year 2001. MethodsA descriptive study was performed on the deaths from road accidents. Autopsy reports, body removal reports, death certificates and blood concentration reports, available at the National Institute for Forensic Sciences and at the local hospitals, were reviewed. Results Forty five fatalities were analyzed. The mean age of th (mas) e victims was 34,7 years; males were more affected than females, with a 3:1 ratio. 37% were pedestrians, 26% motorcyclists, 20% drivers, 8,6% cyclists and 8,6% passengers. 65,1% of the road accidents occurred during weekends. The most common road accidents were either collisions or by running over. The places with the highest rates of death from motor vehicle related accidents were the urban areas of Tunja and San Gil and the Vado Real-Oiba road. The mean Injury Severity Score was 42,8. 53% of the deaths at the scene received no medical care; 73% of the victims died within two hours after the motor-vehicle accident. 17,8% of deaths were definitely preventable and 46,7% were possibly preventable, for a combined preventable death rate of 64,5 %.

Modelo Matemático para Análisis de Vacunación y Control del Vector en Incidencia de Malaria/ Mathematical model for the analysis of vaccination and vector control on malaria incidence

Vásquez Pinzón, Juan U.; Méndez-Sánchez, Stella C.
2003-05-01

Resumen en inglés ObjectivesA model describing malaria behavior through a system of ordinary differential equations. ConclusionWe obtained numerical conditions for the existence of a non-trivial equilibrium state, conditioned to the existence of a single real positive root of a fourth degree polynomial. This is a problem that remains unsolved.

Babel: Cine y comunicación en un mundo globalizado/ Babel: Cinema and communication within a globalized world/ Babel: filme e comunicação num mundo globalizado

Pereira Domínguez, Carmen; Solé Blanch, Jordi; Valero Iglesias, Luis Fernando
2010-01-01

In this article is presented a formative proposal using the cinema as a cultural material and as a source of knowledge. A film like Babel offers a good material in order to approach globalization and citizenship education, with propositions that demand a new humanism, a new relationship among people, aware of the communication problems, prejudices and cultural collisions derived from technological development. The film Babel questions the existence in a globalize world wh (mas) ere everything is interrelated, for this purpose it brings the old biblical myth of the Tower of Babel emphasising wrong identifications, misunderstandings and failed opportunities, as invisible hands that guide our lives; or where destiny eludes us. Babel enables to understand globalize reality. It also allows us to be almost present in four different places as far as USA, México, Morocco and Japan, not only physically distant. We see the contradiction of miscommunication and isolation due to cultural difference in spite of the fictitious technological proximity. We live together, but isolated from one another

Aspectos teórico-metodológicos, de las comunidades terapéuticas para la asistencia de la droga dependencia: sus comienzos/ Theoretical and methodological aspects of therapeutic communities for drug dependency care: its beginnings

Rodríguez, Ana Cristina
2009-12-01

Resumen en inglés The emergence and development of Communities Therapeutic (CT) as collisions of addictive disorders are closely related with social movements, political, economic and scientists who set out with the decline of the positivist paradigm. The drugs are known as narcotics, addiction and mental illness are made as of the time. This essay intends to conduct a literature course on the origins of Communities Therapeutic in the treatment of addictions, developing the theoretical and (mas) methodological assumptions that are organized in the TC approaches that are considered pioneers in the treatment of people affected by drug addiction, well as to discuss the historical dimensions-social science makes possible the creation of them.
