In this study three adsorbents including magnesium aluminate of spinel type (MgAl2O4), magnesia (MgO) and gamma -alumina (gamma -Al2O3), were obtained and characterized. These materials were evaluated for their capacity to adsorb chromium from 50 ppm solutions of K2Cr2O7 in a low stirring vessel and a packed bed adsorption column. The activated magnesia showed the greatest capacity for adsorption reaching 91.66% (11 m mol of Cr/gr) in the stirred batch system over 1.5 h, (mas) while the packed bed column adsorbed only 36.67% (4.4 m mol Cr/gr). With the magnesium aluminate and the gamma -alumina the adsorption of chromium was lower compared with the magnesia when varying conditions of mass, pH, and temperature in the stirred batch system. It is concluded that the temperature and turbulence promoted by stirring in the batch system favored the adsorption of chromium especially in magnesia

Estudio preliminar sobre la determinación de elementos traza en cervezas venezolanas por ICP-OES/ Preliminary study on the determination of trace elements in venezuelan beers by ICP-OES

Marcano, Eunice; Gómez, Clara; Benzo, Zully; Laine, Jorge
2010-01-01

Resumen en inglés The levels of several chemical elements were determined simultaneously in ten different beers of the Venezuelan market by ICP-OES. With the exception of chromium, beer does not provide important amounts of nutritional oligoelements. The average chromium content found (33 µg/L) is higher than one reported for USA's beer (10 µg/L) but smaller than another reported for Brazilian beer (66 µg/L). The average percentage of chromium RDA by beer consumption found for Venezuela (mas) (6.3%) is similar to that reported for Belgium (5%). Regarding toxic elements, one of the samples contained an elevated amount of aluminium, probably dissolved from the aluminium can.
