Resumen en español Se estudió la epoxidación asimétrica de R-(+)-limoneno en presencia del catalizador de Jacobsen y su contraparte aquiral tanto en fase homogénea como heterogénea inmovilizado en Al-MCM-41) y utilizando dimetildioxirano preparado in situ como agente oxidante. Se encontró que la actividad catalítica del catalizador quiral y aquiral fue muy similar, bien sea en fase homogénea o heterogénea. Este resultado sugiere que la formación preferencial del producto mayoritar (mas) io (cis-(+)-1,2-óxido de limoneno), no depende únicamente del centro quiral del catalizador, sino que también participa el centro quiral del R-(+)-limoneno. Esto representa una clara ventaja desde el punto de vista económico, ya que un catalizador aquiral es mucho más barato que su contraparte quiral. Resumen en inglés The asymmetric epoxidation of R-(+)-limonene in the presence of the Jacobsen's catalyst in its chiral and achiral either homogeneous or heterogeneous (immobilized on Al-MCM-41) forms was studied using in situ generated dimethyldioxirane as oxidizing agent. It was found that the catalytic activity of the chiral and achiral forms of the Jacobsen's catalyst was very similar either homogeneous or heterogeneous. This result suggests that the preferential formation of cis-(+)-1 (mas) ,2-limonene oxide depends not only on the catalyst chiral center, but also on the substrate chiral center. This represents a clear advantage from the economical point of view since the achiral catalyst is much less expensive than its chiral counterpart.

Resumen en español Se presenta el efecto del agente oxidante en la diastereoselectividad del epóxido de R-(+)-limoneno utilizando catalizadores tipo Jacobsen, tanto en su forma quiral como aquiral. Se encontró que el tipo de agente oxidante afecta marcadamente la diastereoselectividad. Así, en presencia de agentes oxidantes preparados in situ se obtuvieron excesos diastereoméricos moderados y similares en ausencia de catalizador (23% con DMD y 29% con O2/ pivalaldehído). También se ob (mas) servó este comportamiento en presencia de ambos catalizadores. Con DMD se obtuvo 56% con el catalizador quiral y 50% con el aquiral, y con O2/pivalaldehído se obtuvo 38% con ambos catalizadores. Por otro lado, con los agentes oxidantes comerciales no se presentó exceso diastereomérico en ausencia de catalizador. En este caso, el catalizador quiral alcanzó un exceso diastereomérico mayor que el aquiral. Con NaOCl se logró 65% con el catalizador quiral y 38% con el aquiral, y con m-CPBA 79% con el catalizador quiral y 39% con el aquiral. Lo anterior sugiere que debe existir al menos otra especie oxidante intermediaria diferente a la aceptada convencionalmente (MnV(oxo)). De esta manera, se propone una modificación al ciclo catalítico tradicional teniendo en cuenta el agente oxidante. En presencia de los agentes oxidantes comerciales se presume que el centro quiral del catalizador gobierna la inducción asimétrica, mientras que para los agentes oxidantes preparados in situ la inducción asimétrica estaría gobernada por el centro quiral del R-(+)-limoneno. Adicionalmente se encontró que la estabilidad química del catalizador de Jacobsen mejoró cuando el agente oxidante fue DMD generado in situ. Resumen en inglés The oxidising agent effect on R-(+)-Limonene epoxide diastereoselectivity using chiral and achiral Jacobsen’s type catalysts is presented. The type of oxidising agent strongly influences diastereoselectivity. Moderate diastereomeric excesses were achieved in the presence of oxidising agents prepared in situ but in the absence of catalyst (23% for DMD and 29% for O2/pivalaldehyde). Similar diastereomeric excesses were obtained with both chiral and achiral catalyst when th (mas) e oxidising agents were prepared in situ; 56% and 50% excesses were obtained when using DMD for the chiral and achiral catalyst (respectively) and 38% using O2/pivalaldehyde for both catalysts. Diastereomeric excesses were not observed in the absence of catalyst when using commercial oxidising agents; the chiral catalyst presented larger diastereomeric excesses than its achiral counterpart: 65% and 38% excess using NaOCl for the chiral and achiral catalyst, respectively, and 79% and 39% using m-CPBA for the chiral and achiral catalyst, respectively. This suggests that at least one oxidant species, different from the conventionally accepted (MnV(oxo)), might be involved in this catalytic process. A modification of the traditional catalytic cycle is proposed considering the type of oxidising agent. The catalyst’s chiral centre appears to govern asymmetric induction when commercial oxidising agents are used, whereas the R-(+)-Limonene chiral centre appears to govern asymmetric induction in the presence of in situ-prepared oxidising agents. On the other hand, the chemical stability of Jacobsen’s catalyst improved when in situ produced DMD was used as oxidising agent.

Resumen en español Se presenta un modelo bioplasmático quiral que caracteriza la cabeza humana y se usa para analizar su comportamiento cuando es radiada por las microondas de la telefonía celular. La técnica FDTD permite calcular numéricamente los campos electromagnéticos y simular el coeficiente SAR. Los resultados obtenidos muestran el SAR en función de la potencia de entrada, de la impedancia de antena y de la quiralidad. La conclusión más importante es que, considerando el fact (mas) or quiral del medio biológico, existe mayor absorción de la radiación emitida por los teléfonos celulares, con respecto a los resultados de los modelos clásicos Resumen en inglés A model formed by chiral bioplasma, which represents the human head inner structure and used to analyze its behavior when it is radiated by a microwave from cellular phones is presented. The FDTD technique is used to calculate the electromagnetic fields, and to simulate the SAR. The results show the SAR behavior in function of input power, antenna impedance and the chirality factor. Resumen en español En este artículo se presenta un modelo teórico y la simulación computacional correspondiente, que permite analizar los efectos de la propagación de ondas solitónicas en medios biológicos esencialmente quirales. La quiralidad se modela, en este caso, bajo la formulación de Drude, mostrándose los rangos de validez del modelo propuesto. Este modelo considera los efectos no lineales y dispersivos del medio, debido a una dependencia espectral de la señal de entrada y (mas) la aproximación de campo cuasi-monocromático, para escribir la ecuación no lineal de Schrödinger y resolverla numéricamente mediante el método espectral de Fourier. Los resultados de nuestras simulaciones muestran el efecto de la variación del factor quiral sobre la impedancia del medio y sobre los coeficientes de transmisión y reflexión. Finalmente se discute, brevemente, la generalización del modelo de Drude para el caso de metamateriales Resumen en inglés In this paper a theory model with the corresponding simulations, which permit to analyze the solitonic wave propagation in biological media, is presented. The chirality is modeled as Drude's formulation, showing the validity rank of the model. The model considers nonlinear and dispersive effects due to the spectral dependency of the input signal and the cuasy-monocromatic approach, so as to write the Schrödinger non-linear equation and solving it numerically by means of (mas) the spectral Fourier method. The numerical results show the effect of chiral factor variation on the media impedance, transmission and reflection coefficients. Finally, the generalization of the Drude's formulation for the metamaterial case, is briefly discussed

Resumen en español En este artículo se presenta la solución de las ecuaciones de Maxwell para pulsos electromagnéticos de polarización circular a la derecha (RCP) y de polarización circular a la izquierda (LCP) en régimen normal y de metamaterial. El medio de propagación corresponde a un medio dispersivo, quiral y no lineal. El efecto quiral se caracteriza a través del formalismo de Born-Fedorov y la no-linealidad considerada es del tipo Kerr. La simulación de los modelos presentad (mas) os se realiza mediante el método split-step de Fourier y los resultados obtenidos muestran que para ambos tipos de pulsos, RCP y LCP, hay un efecto compensador entre la atenuación del medio y el efecto quiral Resumen en inglés This paper presents the solution of Maxwell´s equations for electromagnetic pulses with right circular polarization (RCP) and left circular polarization (LCP) in normal and metamaterial regimes. The propagating medium is dispersive, chiral and nonlinear. The chirality effect is characterized through Born-Fedorov formalism. The nonlinearity used is of a Kerr type. Models simulation is carried out through split-step Fourier method and the results show that for both types of pulses, there is a compensating, effect between the medium attenuation and the chiral factor
