  6. Waldemar Mordecai Haffkine, CIE (1860-1930): prophylactic vaccination against cholera and bubonic plague in British India.

    Science.gov (United States)

    Hawgood, Barbara J

    2007-02-01

Waldemar Mordecai Haffkine developed an anticholera vaccine at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, in 1892. From the results of field trials in India from 1893 to 1896, he has been credited as having carried out the first effective prophylactic vaccination for a bacterial disease in man. When the plague pandemic reached Bombay, Haffkine became bacteriologist to the Government of (British) India (1896-1915). He soon produced an effective antiplague vaccine and large inoculation schemes were commenced. In 1902 19 people in Mulkowal (Punjab) died from tetanus poisoning as a consequence of antiplague vaccination. Haffkine was blamed unjustly and exonerated only in 1907, following a campaign spear-headed by Ronald Ross. In India the stigma remained. In 1925 in tribute to the great bacteriologist, the Bombay Government renamed the laboratory as the Haffkine Institute. The Haffkine Biopharmaceutical Corporation Ltd and the Haffkine Institute for Training, Research and Testing in Mumbai continue to be important centres for public health.

    2010-01-01

In this paper we prove, for all $d \\ge 2$, that for no $s<\\frac{d+1}{2}$ does $I_s(\\mu)<\\infty$ imply the canonical Falconer distance problem incidence bound, or the analogous estimate where the Euclidean norm is replaced by the norm generated by a particular convex body $B$ with a smooth boundary and everywhere non-vanishing curvature. Our construction, based on a combinatorial construction due to Pavel Valtr naturally leads us to some interesting connections between the problem under consideration, geometric incidence theorem in the discrete setting and distribution of lattice points in convex domains. We also prove that an example by Mattila can be discretized to produce a set of points and annuli for which the number of incidences is much greater than in the case of the lattice. In particular, we use the known results on the Gauss Circle Problem and a discretized version of Mattila's example to produce a non-lattice set of points and annuli where the number of incidences is much greater than in the ...

Probiotic foods are a group of health-promoting, so-called functional foods, with large commercial interest and growing market shares (Arvanitoyannis & van Houwelingen-Koukaliaroglou, 2005). In general, their health benefits are based on the presence of selected strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), that, when taken up in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. They are administered mostly through the consumption of fermented milks or yoghurts (Mercenier, Pavan, & Pot, 2003). In addition to their common use in the dairy industry, probiotic LAB strains may be used in other food products too, including fermented meats (Hammes & Hertel, 1998; Incze, 1998; Kröckel, 2006; Työppönen, Petäjä,& Mattila- Sandholm, 2003).

Kin selection theory predicts that in colonies of social Hymenoptera with multiply mated queens, workers should mutually inhibit ("police") worker reproduction, but that in colonies with singly mated queens, workers should favor rearing workers' sons instead of queens' sons. In line with these predictions, Mattila et al. (Curr Biol 22:2027-2031, 2012) documented increased ovary development among workers in colonies of honey bees with singly mated queens, suggesting that workers can detect and respond adaptively to queen mating frequency and raising the possibility that they facultative police. In a follow-up experiment, we test and reject the hypothesis that workers in single-patriline colonies prefer worker-derived males and are able to reproduce directly; we show that their eggs are policed as strongly as those of workers in colonies with multiply mated queens. Evidently, workers do not respond facultatively to a kin structure that favors relaxed policing and increased direct reproduction. These workers may instead be responding to a poor queen or preparing for possible queen loss.

We have observed Supernova (SN) 2008bk in NGC 7793, both photometrically and spectroscopically, primarily at late times. We find that it is a Type II-Plateau (II-P) SN, which most closely resembles the low-luminosity SN 1999br in NGC 4900. Given the overall similarity between the observed light curves and colors of SNe 2008bk and 1999br, we infer that the total visual extinction to SN 2008bk must be almost entirely due to the Galactic foreground, similar to that for SN 1999br: A_V=0.065 mag, which is substantially less than the 1.0 +/- 0.5 mag assumed by Mattila et al. (2008). Furthermore, we confirm the identification of the putative red supergiant progenitor star of the SN in high-quality g'r'i' Gemini-South images from 2007. Little ambiguity exists in this progenitor identification; besides the connection between the star Sk -69 202 and SN 1987A, it qualifies as one of the best SN progenitor identifications to date. From a combination of the Gemini images with archival, pre-SN, Very Large Telescope JHK_s i...

Full Text Available The article is focused on accounts of journeys in Sicily performed by Polish columnists and historians in the period of 1949-1989. In other words it embraces almost half century of history of Poland that went through one of the most difficult moments in its days. Lack of freedom of expression, lack of freedom of movement throughout Europe resulted in a situation that only few could travel by establishing positive relationships with the communist authorities. Descriptions of Sicily from that period published by both writers (Marian Brandys, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and historians (Joanna Olkiewicz, as well as publicists (Waldemar Łysiak, Marian Kałuża present the island in a biased and shallow way. Beside Iwaszkiewicz book, which at times evokes Krasiński journals, we can deal with accounts focused on widely criticized political and economic situation. Thanks to those descriptions Polish readers, during the regime, could have consolidated their belief as to the poor life conditions in the West (particularly in Sicily. What is more there would be nothing to regret if they weren’t able to reach those destinations. It constitutes a radical difference with the way of depicting Sicily in XVIII and XIX century by Polish travelers. Then the island was presented in poetic and colorful way, and the descriptions were really encouraging to travel.

Full Text Available Temperature and precipitation conditions in the Kaffiøyra region in the summer season (21 July–31 August for the period from 1975–2014 are described based on data collected during 22 expeditions, in which meteorological measurements were carried out, and complete data series combining both original and reconstructed data. The latter ones were obtained using data from the Ny Ålesund meteorological station, which are strongly correlated with data from the Kaffiøyra region. Seasonal statistics presented for temperature and precipitation based on these two sets of data reveal only slight changes. Summer temperatures in the Kaffiøyra region in the studied period (1975–2014 showed statistically significant strong upward trends, while precipitation totals revealed a downward trend, but not statistically significant. In the studied area, based on 40-years of data, it was demonstrated that the near-surface lapse rates of summer air temperature are slightly lower in glaciated (0.58°C/100 m than in non-glaciated areas (0.67°C/100 m. Anticyclonic/cyclonic circulation types significantly increase/decrease air temperature on the Waldemar Glacier, while their impact on precipitation is markedly smaller. In summer, close correlations were observed between air temperature and such glacier characteristics as the mass balance and the location of the equilibrium line, while precipitation does not have a great influence on them.

Full Text Available Vitamins and minerals are essential substances for proper functioning of the body. Most children livingin outskirts of urban areas receive a supply of low nutritional value, causing health problems, and low profitabilityschool. The lack of micronutrients in the diet of these children is not solely due to an economic factor, but also a lack ofinformation about the sources of nutrition and how these can best be used. This work was developed with thecommunity school's state school Waldemar Mundim (Goiânia, Goiás in order to promote the socialization ofknowledge about the importance of micronutrients for health, focusing on food sources of low cost. The application of apreliminary questionnaire enabled us to diagnose a low frequency in the regular consumption of vegetables, milk andmeat by the students, and low level of knowledge about micronutrients. Participatory classes have been developed onthis theme, using facilitators of learning. Like practical activities have been produced seedlings of fruit and vegetables, which were distributed to students and also planted in the school. Analysis of data obtained at the end of the actionallowed concluding that there were significant changes in both the level of information, as in eating habits of students. Itis hoped that this work can bring improvements in life quality of these students.

Full Text Available Markku PaatelmaDepartment of Education, Auron – OMT Center, Helsinki, FinlandAbstract: Low back pain (LBP is a substantial health problem and has subsequently attracted a considerable amount of research both in the early and chronic phases. Chronic, nonspecific LBP indicates limited effectiveness from most commonly applied interventions and approaches, but it seems to be opposite in the early phase. Intervention is more effective than advice on staying active in acute LBP, leading to more rapid improvement in function, mood, quality of life, and general health. We compared physiotherapy (PT that involved 3–7 treatment sessions based on subclassification in early phase LBP (acute and subacute LBP lasting <3 months to one session of PT that advised staying active, in 134 LBP patients. Low back and leg pain, disability, and days of sick-leave were evaluated. After 12 months, all groups had only minimal pain and disability. In the advice-only group, those patients who had radiating pain had less improvement compared with other groups, and increasing days of sick-leave because of LBP after 12 months. Compared with the advice-only group, orthopedic manual therapy and McKenzie methods seemed to be slightly more effective than one session of assessment in pain and disability. Keywords: OMT, advice, low back pain

  8. Extragalactic background light: a measurement at 400 nm using dark cloud shadow*†- I. Low surface brightness spectrophotometry in the area of Lynds 1642

We present the method and observations for the measurement of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) utilizing the shadowing effect of a dark cloud. We measure the surface brightness difference between the opaque cloud core and its unobscured surroundings. In the difference the large atmospheric and Zodiacal light components are eliminated and the only remaining foreground component is the scattered starlight from the cloud itself. Although much smaller, its separation is the key problem in the method. For its separation we use spectroscopy. While the scattered starlight has the characteristic Fraunhofer lines and 400 nm discontinuity, the EBL spectrum is smooth and without these features. Medium resolution spectrophotometry at λ = 380-580 nm was performed with VLT/FORS at ESO of the surface brightness in and around the high-galactic-latitude dark cloud Lynds 1642. Besides the spectrum for the core with AV ≳ 15 mag, further spectra were obtained for intermediate-opacity cloud positions. They are used as proxy for the spectrum of the impinging starlight spectrum and to facilitate the separation of the scattered starlight (cf. Paper II; Mattila et al.). Our spectra reach a precision of ≲ 0.5 × 10-9 erg cm-2 s-1 sr-1 Å-1 as required to measure an EBL intensity in range of ∼1 to a few times 10-9 erg cm-2 s-1 sr-1 Å-1. Because all surface brightness components are measured using the same equipment, the method does not require unusually high absolute calibration accuracy, a condition that has been a problem for some previous EBL projects.

Temozolomide (TMZ was approved for second-line therapy of recurrent anaplastic astrocytoma. However, TMZ therapy in GBM patients reveals properties such as reduced tolerability and inauspicious hemogram. The solution addressed here concerning GBM therapy consolidates and uses the potential of organic and peptide chemistry with molecular medicine. We enhanced the pharmacologic potency with simultaneous reduction of unwanted adverse reactions of the highly efficient chemotherapeutic TMZ. The TMZ connection to transporter molecules (TMZ-BioShuttle was investigated, resulting in a much higher pharmacological effect in glioma cell lines and also with reduced dose rate. From this result we can conclude that a suitable chemistry could realize the ligation of pharmacologically active, but sensitive and highly unstable pharmaceutical ingredients without functional deprivation. The TMZ-BioShuttle dramatically enhanced the potential of TMZ for the treatment of brain tumors and is an attractive drug for combination chemotherapy. Keywords: drug delivery, carrier molecules, facilitated transport, glioblastoma multiforme, temozolomide

Here, we present the results of a pilot study of 10 adults with ADHD participating in short-term individual cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT, 9 adults participating in cognitive training (CT, and 10 controls. Self-report questionnaires, independent evaluations, and computerized neurocognitive testing were collected before and after the treatments to evaluate change. There were distinctive pre-hypotheses regarding the treatments, and therefore the statistical comparisons were conducted in pairs: CBT vs control, CT vs control, and CBT vs CT. In a combined ADHD symptom score based on self-reports, 6 participants in CBT, 2 in CT and 2 controls improved. Using independent evaluations, improvement was found in 7 of the CBT participants, 2 of CT participants and 3 controls. There was no treatment-related improvement in cognitive performance. Thus, in the CBT group, some encouraging improvement was seen, although not as clearly as in previous research with longer interventions. In the CT group, there was improvement in the trained tasks but no generalization of the improvement to the tasks of the neurocognitive testing, the self-report questionnaires, or the independent evaluations. These preliminary results warrant further studies with more participants and with more elaborate cognitive testing. Keywords: CBT, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, cognitive testing, non-pharmacological treatments

The aim of this study was to examine the function of JNKs by using a low-dose dextran sulfate sodium (DSS model in JNK1 knockout mice (Mapk8–/–, JNK2 knockout mice (Mapk9–/–, and wild-type controls (WT1, WT2.Methods: The animals were evaluated daily using a disease activity index. After 30 days, the intestine was evaluated histologically with a crypt damage score. CD4+ and CD8+ cells were quantified using immunofluorescence. Analysis of tumor necrosis factor-a (TNFα, interleukin-6 (IL-6, and transforming growth factor ß1 (TGFB1 expression was carried out using LightCycler® real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: Cyclic administration of low-dose DSS (1% was not able to induce features of chronic colitis in Mapk8–/– WT2 mice. By contrast, DSS administration significantly increased the disease activity index in WT1 and Mapk9–/– mice. In Mapk9–/– mice, the crypt damage score and the number of CD4+ and CD8+ cells as features of chronic colitis/inflammation were also significantly elevated. Expression of TNFα, IL-6, and TGFB1 was not altered by the JNK knockout. Conclusion: Administering DSS at a defined low concentration that is unable to induce colitis in WT animals leads to clinically and histologically detectable chronic colitis in Mapk9–/– mice. Several studies have established the relevance of the JNK pathway in inflammatory bowel diseases. The present study analyzed the therapeutic effect of D-JNKI-1, a specific JNK-inhibiting peptide, in a low-dose dextran sulfate sodium (DSS model of chronic colitis. Methods: DSS colitis was induced in female C57/BL6 mice by cyclic administration using different concentrations of DSS (1.0% and 1.5%. Mice in the intervention groups received subcutaneous administration of 1 µg/kg D-JNKI-1 on days 2, 12, and 22. They were monitored daily to assess the severity of colitis, body weight, stool consistency, and the occurrence of occult blood or gross rectal bleeding using evaluation of the disease activity index. The animals were sacrificed after 30 days, and the inflamed intestine was histologically evaluated using a crypt damage score. Immunohistochemical quantification of CD4+ and CD8+ cells was also carried out. Results: Administration of 1 µg/kg D-JNKI-1 resulted in a significant decrease in the disease activity index (P = 0.013 for 1.0% DSS; P = 0.007 for 1.5% DSS. As a mild form of colitis was induced, histological examination did not show any distinct damage to the mucosa and crypts. However, expression of CD4+ and CD8+ cells was reduced in mice treated with D-JNKI-1 (not

However, recent studies have shown that the cardiovascular risks of regular use of traditional analgesics also deserve attention. We investigated the use of traditional analgesics for their prediction of major coronary events during 16 years of follow-up.Methods: A population sample of 8000 Finns aged 30 years and over was invited to a comprehensive health examination in 1978–1980; 7217 (90% complied, and 4824 of these had no diagnosed cardiovascular disease. The participants filled in a questionnaire eliciting information on the use of analgesics. Record linkage to the National Hospital Discharge Register and the mortality register of the Central Statistical Office of Finland identified 266 major coronary events (myocardial infarctions or coronary deaths by the end of 1994.Results: The risk of a major coronary event was significantly elevated among those reporting regular use of analgesics at baseline. Compared with nonusers and adjusted for known risk factors for coronary heart disease, the relative risk of an event during the whole follow-up period was 1.51 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08–2.10 among regular users of analgesics. The risk was as high as 5.27 (95% CI 2.13–13.11 during the first two years of the follow-up. Thereafter it leveled off. Conclusion: Based on sales statistics almost all

Data on hospitalizations were obtained from the Finnish Hospital Discharge Register. Results: In the early stages of T1DM, the majority of the use of hospitalizations was due to the treatment of T1DM without complications. Enormous increases were found for complications when diabetes lasted longer (from 9.5 to 16.5 years. For women, the yearly number of bed-days for renal complications increased 4.8-fold, for peripheral vascular disease 4.3-fold, and for ophthalmic complications 2.5-fold. For men, the corresponding increases were as follows: 5-fold, 6.9-fold, and 2.5-fold. The yearly number of bed-days for nephropathy increased 7-fold. Bed-days for T1DM without complications dropped dramatically. The length of stay in hospitalizations decreased notably, but hospital visits increased when the duration of T1DM increased. Conclusions: Hospitalizations due to complications substantially increase with aging of T1DM patients. Prevention of T1DM is strongly needed. Keywords: T1DM, inpatient care, hospitalizations, complications

further surprises. The 'head' and major parts of the 'Bird' are moving apart at more than 400 km/s (1.4 million km/h!). Observing such high velocities is very rare in merging galaxies. Also, the 'head' appears to be the major source of infrared luminosity in the system, though it is the smallest of the three galaxies. "It seems that NACO has caught the action right at the time of the first high-speed fly-by of the 'head' galaxy through the system consisting of the other two galaxies," says Seppo Mattila, member of the discovery team. "These two galaxies must have met earlier, probably a couple of hundred million years ago." The 'head' is forming stars violently, at a rate of nearly 200 solar masses per year, while the other two galaxies appear to be at a more quiescent epoch of their interaction-induced star formation history. The 'Bird' belongs to the prestigious family of luminous infrared galaxies, with an infrared luminosity nearly one thousand billion times that of the Sun. This family of galaxies has long been thought to signpost important events in galaxy evolution, such as mergers of galaxies, which in turn trigger bursts of star formation, and may eventually lead to the formation of a single elliptical galaxy. The findings presented here are reported in a paper to appear in a future issue of the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society ("Adaptive optics imaging and optical spectroscopy of a multiple merger in a luminous infrared galaxy", by P. Väisänen" et al.). Note [1]: The team is composed of P. Väisänen, A. Kniazev, D. A. H. Buckley, L. Crause, Y. Hashimoto, N. Loaring, E. Romero-Colmenero, and M. Still (SAAO, South Africa), S. Molecular forms of Sb (V complexes are commercialized as sodium stibogluconate (Pentostam® and meglumine antimoniate (MA (Glucantime®. Ever-increasing drug resistance in the parasites limits the use of antimonials, due to the low drug concentrations being administered against high parasitic counts. Sb5+ toxicity provokes severe side effects during treatment. To enhance therapeutic potency and to increase Sb (V concentration within the target cells, we decided to try a new active substance form, a hydrosol of Sb2O5⋅nH2O nanoparticles (NPs, instead of molecular drugs. Methodology/principal findings: Sb2O5⋅nH2O NPs were synthesized by controlled SbCl5 hydrolysis in a great excess of water. Sb2O5⋅nH2O phase formation was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The surface of Sb (V NPs was treated with ligands with a high affinity for target cell membrane receptors. The mean particle size determined by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy was ~35–45 nm. In vitro tests demonstrated a 2.5–3 times higher antiparasitic activity of Sb (V nanohybrid hydrosols

cluster of galaxies. They chose the Coma Cluster, which fills an area of the sky twice as wide as the Full Moon even though it is about 450 million light-years away. ISO scanned the Coma Cluster twice, along different cross-sections, measuring with ISOPHOT its emissions of long-wavelength infrared rays. The hunch of the German-Finnish team turned out to be correct. Emissions indicating the presence of intergalactic dust were much stronger towards the crowded centre of the cluster than at the edges. The results on the Coma Cluster obtained with ISO seem to contradict, at first sight, observations of the same cluster by another space observatory built in Europe. The German-US-UK Rosat satellite for X-ray astronomy has charted X-rays coming from very hot gas between the galaxies, and concentrated towards the centre of the Coma Cluster. The intergalactic gas detected by Rosat has a temperature of 80 million degrees, far hotter even than the core of the Sun. "The dust particles are at the very cold end of the temperature scale," says Kalevi Mattila of Helsinki Observatory. "ISOPHOT allows us to measure temperatures for them, in the range minus 220 to minus 250 degrees Celsius." How can cold dust at minus 250 degrees survive within a very hot gas? The gas is extremely tenuous, so it cannot simply warm the grains of dust like a hair-drier. Instead the hot gas subjects the dust to impacts by energetic atomic particles which knock atoms out of it, and so gradually erode the dust grains. Calculations suggest that the hot gas will destroy the cold dust in about 100 million years. Although that is very slow by human standards, it represents only one-hundredth of the age of the galaxies. Experts therefore have to consider where fresh supplies of intergalactic dust come from. Rosat astronomers found that the Coma Cluster is not spherical, which would be the shape expected in an isolated cluster. By X-rays, the cloud of hot intergalactic gas is seen to be egg-shaped. The same shape is

deities, and river deities. Such dei-ties were responsible not only for the small spirits who lived in the mountains, forests and rivers, but they also were responsible for the animals and plants that were there. People who lived in or nearby these places had to communicate with the spirits and supernatural beings living in the area before they used the area’s resources. Moreover, they had to communicate with the more powerful elements which controlled the universe. According to Vladimir Bogoraz ( Waldemar Borgorose) , shamanism among the Chukchee man-ifested itself as “Family Shamanism”, and “was still in its primary stage of development”. As such, it provided “the most characteristic, pure and primitive” features of shamanism. It was com-mon in the 1800 s and early 1900 s for males to play a leading role in most Siberian groups. Yet, in spite of male dominance in shamanism, female shamans were always considered to be“leading fig-ures in the shamanic field”. Among Chukchee and Koryak there is another kind of shaman where the male shaman takes the form of a female. This hap-pened when the shaman is possessed by the identi-ty of a female spirit. They received“the call of de-ity” to change their sex through visions. In general, Chukchee shaman experienced the call to become a shaman during their adolescence. The call usually came from shaman’s inner voice, based on which the “candidate shaman” estab-lished their relationship with deities. This sudden calling often confused the initiate, and they were not always so sure about their situation. They felt“shyness” and fear; lost interest in regular life, and were unwilling to work and communicate with others. They had no appetite, and slept a lot. They often stayed in their tentall of the time, or ran away when they went out for hunting or grazing their reindeer. Generally, young people were un-willing to accept the call of the deity. No matter if they were novice shaman or ex-pert shaman, both

information [7] and in Stockholm he had, again, very successful postdocs such as Ulf Leonhardt. Finally, in 2005, Stig Stenholm retired, although he is still active, writing papers, taking part in conferences and making research visits. We honoured his 70th birthday at the CEWQO2009 conference, and hope that the future provides us with further opportunities for such events. Looking at the obituary of Dirk ter Haar, I see that his style with students reminds me of Stig's approach. In my opinion, Stig expects independence and initiative from a student, giving perhaps a broad topic in which the student is expected to find his or her own way, whilst working perhaps with a postdoc. Juha Javanainen has talked about the 'sink or swim' style (not referring to Stig, though). There is a famous series of children's books about Moomin trolls by Tove Jansson (another Swedish-speaking Finn like Stig). In one of them, the Moomin find in early spring a small flower in a patch of land uncovered by snow, pushing its way up. One of them wants to cover it against frost during the night, but another says 'Don't, it'll fare better later if it has some difficulties at first'. At CEWQO2009 Stig gave the full list of his finished PhD students: Rainer Salomaa (1973), Temba Dlodlo (1980), Juha Javanainen (1980), Markus Lindberg (1985), Matti Kaivola (1985), Birger Ståhlberg (1985), Kalle-Antti Suominen (1992), Mackillo Kira (1995), Päivi Törmä (1996), Asta Paloviita (1997), Patrik Öhberg (1998), Martti Havukainen (1999), Erika Andersson (2000), Pawel Piwnicki (2001), Åsa Larson (2001), Markku Jääskeläinen (2003), and Jonas Larson (2005). One should also mention Erkki Kyrölä, who eventually graduated at Rochester and Olli Serimaa, who never graduated but published some important early-stage laser cooling work. As a final note I must mention a passion that Stig and I share, namely books. I have nearly 400 professional physics and mathematics books, but I am certain that the size of Stig

The aim of this Olympiad is similar to EUSO, but on top of teamwork, members also have to participate in an individual test. Because of the importance of these international competitions for physics education, and also because of their growing number, it was seen as useful to found an umbrella organization, the World Federation of Physics Competitions (WFPhC), which would undertake tasks common to most of the competitions [11]. These are: To stimulate talent for physics by means of physics competitions in secondary schools; To stimulate meetings and conferences where people interested in physics competitions can develop and interchange their ideas within their home country; To afford the opportunity to, in particular by means of the foundation's periodical, exchange publications in the field of physics teaching; To acknowledge the merits of people who have contributed greatly to the goals of the Federation, through a WFPhC award; To afford assistance and support to countries that wish to organize physics competitions by putting them in contact with experienced countries; To promote physics and to encourage youngsters interested in physics. The WFPhC was founded in 1999 and the first and acting president is Hans Jordens, one of the authors of this article. The Federation edits a publication twice a year with an extensive collection of former or recent tasks and solutions, as well as organizational matters. It organizes every other year a Congress during which an award is giving to a person who has contributed greatly to the goals of the Federation. So far this award has been given to three people: Gunter Lind (Germany), Gunnar Tibell (Sweden) and posthumously to Waldemar Gorzkowski (Poland). 2.
