This article suggests the utilization of thermometers constructed from optical fibers technology in overhead power transmission lines. This will help the studies in progress about the electric power systems ampacity. It also presents the advantages of using optical fibers instead of conventional thermometers. We analyze the character of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), one of the most famous scientists of all time, as portrayed in three significant movies: Luigi Maggi's Galileo Galilei (1909), Liliana Cavani's Galileo (1968), and Joseph Losey's Galileo (1975), the last one of which was based upon Bertolt Brecht's drama, Das Leben des Galilei (1947). We investigate the relationships between the main characteristics of these fictional Galileos and the most important twentieth-century Galilean historiographic models. We also analyze the veracity of the plots of these three movies and the role that historical and scientific consultants played in producing them. We conclude that connections between these three movies and Galilean historiographic models are far from evident, that other factors deeply influenced the representation of Galileo on the screen.

Full Text Available Tras la caída de las dictaduras del Cono Sur, el cambio político generó también cambios de paradigmas estéticos y éticos en el campo intelectual, que se expresaron en polémicas en distintos países de la región. Los casos, por lo general, han sido estudiados individualmente para cada país, pero las similitudes justifican un abordaje en conjunto. Este artículo presenta, como primera instancia, un estudio comparado de los casos argentino y paraguayo, con especial énfasis en este último, puesto que ha sido menos trabajado por la crítica literaria latinoamericana. De estos casos, a su vez, se enfoca en dos cruces polémicos concretos: por un lado, una famosa polémica entre Julio Cortázar y Liliana Heker y, por otro, las polémicas de Augusto Roa Bastos con Carlos Villagra Marsal y Guido Rodríguez-Alcalá.

Full Text Available El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar niveles crecientes de nitrógeno y momentos de aplicación del fertilizante nitrogenado en el cultivo del gladiolo. La experiencia se desarrolló en el Instituto de Investigaciones Hortícolas Liliana Dimitrova (Municipio de Quivicán, La Habana, Cuba, en un suelo Ferralítico Rojo, entre los meses de octubre y febrero de las campañas 2004/2005 y 2005/2006. Se evaluaron los componentes de la calidad de las espigas y del material de plantación, así como el efecto de los tratamientos en el estado nutricional de la planta y en la vida en anaquel de las espigas. No se observaron diferencias entre las dosis de nitrógeno y los momentos de aplicación del fertilizante en las variables de calidad de la espiga y del cormo. No obstante, con la variante 70 kg ha-1 de N, aplicada ½ en plantación y ½ a los 60 días posteriores, se logra un mayor porcentaje de espigas ubicadas en las categorías comerciales y un menor número de tallos florales de calidad inferior. En cuanto al estado nutricional de la plantación, existe una relación positiva entre los niveles y los contenidos foliares de nitrógeno aplicados.The objective of this study was to evaluate growing nitrogen levels and application time of the nitrogen fertilizer in gladiolus cultivation. The experiment was carried out at Instituto de Investigaciones Hortículas Liliana Dimitrova (in the Municipality of Quivicán, La Habana, Cuba in an Oxisol soil, from October to February of the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 crop seasons. Full Text Available This article deals with the application of D. P. Ausubel’s Theory of Meaningful Learning in the musical teaching processes, mainly in the improvisational practice. It is sub- divided into three parts: the first one analyses various teaching approaches, especially the traditional and the constructivist; the second one specifically deals with the theory; the third one refers to some theoretical concepts that can be applied in the improvisational practice. Part of the narrative was taken from the Master of Arts dissertation The importance of the teaching of musical improvisation in the interpreter’s development (Institute of Arts – São Paulo State University. In addition to D. P. Ausubel, this study also relied on works by other scholars, among them Vera Jardim, Liliana Bollos, Maria da Graça N. Mizukami and Gilles Deleuze. The use of this theory represents an excellent opportunity of interaction between the musical theory and practice, making use of cognitive processes already in use in the field of education but not so valued by musical education, particularly in matters of musical improvisation teaching.

Coronary angiography revealed a right coronary artery originating from the trunk of the left coronary artery, and an aortic coarctation was observed on aortography. A CT angiogram confirmed these findings. Resection of the aortic coarctation and reimplantation of the ostial portion of right coronary artery into its native site was performed, and resulted in a satisfactory outcome. The association of an anomalous right coronary artery with aortic coarctation has rarely been described and represents a critical situation where early diagnosis and prompt intervention are essential.Keywords: coronary anomalies, single ostium, myocardial ischemia, angina pectoris

Full Text Available El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de soluciones nutritivas en el fertirriego, con diferentes relaciones entre el nitrógeno y el potasio, en la productividad y calidad de los frutos del tomate (híbrido Hazera 3019, en suelo Ferralítico Rojo. La experiencia se desarrolló en el Instituto de Investigaciones Hortícolas Liliana Dimitrova (La Habana, Cuba. Se estudiaron cuatro soluciones nutritivas, que se diferenciaron en su relación NO3-+NH4+/K+ en términos de meq L-1 (N/K, con una relación K+/Ca2++Mg2+ en todas las variantes de 0,75. Los tratamientos resultantes (T1, 1:0,45; T2, 1:0,60 o testigo de producción, T3, 1:0,75 y T4, 1:0,90 fueron distribuidos en un diseño completamente aleatorizado con cuatro réplicas. La variación de la relación N/K en la solución nutritiva influyó en el rendimiento, la calidad externa y la vida en anaquel de los frutos de tomate, sin afectar la calidad bromatológica. La mejor combinación entre estructura del rendimiento y calidad de los frutos se obtiene con la relación N/K 1:0,75, al presentar rendimientos superiores en las categorías de calidad comercial extra, primera y extra más primera, así como frutos con mayor firmeza y grosor del endocarpio, menor porcentaje de frutos fuera de norma y valores inferiores de pérdidas postcosecha.The objective of the present work was to evaluate the effect of nutrient solutions in fertirrigation, with different nitrogen-potassium ratios, on yield and quality of tomato fruits (hybrid Hazera 3019 in Red Ferralitic soil (Oxisol. The aim of this paper was to evaluate prevalence rates and correlates of mild, moderate, and severe forms of social anxiety spectrum in a large sample of university students. Overall, 717 university students were assessed with the Social Anxiety Spectrum Self-Report questionnaire. Using two cut-off scores, 61.4% of subjects were classified as low scorers, 10% as medium scorers, and 28.6% as high scorers. Both high and medium scorers reported fears related to social situations. Interpersonal sensitivity and specific phobias were more common among women with low scores. Childhood/adolescence social anxiety features were more common among males with medium scores. Behavioral inhibition was more common among males with high scores. Functional impairment was severe among high scorers and, to a lesser extent, among medium scorers. Social anxiety spectrum is largely represented among university students. Future studies should investigate whether sufferers of social phobia underachieve or end their professional objectives prematurely. The psychopathology of eating disorders changed across time under the influence of environmental factors, determining the emergence of new phenotypes. Some of these conditions are still under investigation and are not clearly identified as independent diagnostic entities. In this review, the historic evolution of the eating disorder concept up to the recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, has been evaluated. We also examined literature supporting the inclusion of new emergent eating behaviors within the eating disorder spectrum, and their relationship with anorexia, autism, and obsessive–compulsive disorder. In particular, we focused on what is known about the symptoms, epidemiology, assessment, and diagnostic boundaries of a new problematic eating pattern called orthorexia nervosa that could be accepted as a new psychological syndrome, as emphasized by an increasing number of scientific articles in the last few years. Full Text Available The last period of Dino Buzzati's literary production (1960-1971 offers topics and stylistic forms that significantly diverge from the author's persona as prematurely proposed by criticism. Buzzati's prose here includes erotic and sensuous themes, while the author adds some visual elements that become increasingly pivotal in their experimentalism.  This twist on contents and forms reaches is apex in some images of bondage proposed in Buzzati's "opere doppie" (Coglitore:  Le storie dipinte, Poema a fumetti e I miracoli di Val Morel. The drawings in the books are frequently explicit, but bondage is never present in the text, where nothing but distant allusions to it can be found. Moving from Gius Gargiulo's work on the topic, this study interrogates this feature of the works going beyond the level of autocensorship. I will propose to read Buzzati's formal choice through the concepts of aesthetism and suspension that Gilles Deleuze recognizes as peculiar of masochism in his study on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty. Buzzati's works are therefore contextualized in literary and cinematographic Italian production between 1965 and 1975, with reference to Gianni Celati's Il chiodo in testa and Liliana Cavani's Il portiere di notte. I therefore compare the aesthetic function of bondage in Buzzati's paintings to the narrative function of the masochistic scene in Pier Vittorio Tondelli's Camere Separate.

Full Text Available Matteo Preve,1 Cristiana Nisita,1 Massimo Bellini,2 Liliana Dell'Osso1 1Department of Psychiatry, Neurobiology, Pharmacology and Biotechnology, 2Department of Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Unit, University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy Abstract: Panic disorder is the most common type of anxiety disorder, and its most common expression is panic attacks characterized with sudden attacks of anxiety with numerous symptoms, including palpitations, tachycardia, tachypnea, nausea, and vertigo: ie, cardiovascular, gastroenterologic, respiratory, and neuro-otologic symptoms. In clinical practice, panic disorder manifests with isolated gastroenteric or cardiovascular symptoms, requiring additional clinical visits after psychiatric intervention. The first-line treatment for anxiety disorders, and in particular for panic disorder, is the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. However, these drugs can have adverse effects, including sexual dysfunction, increased bodyweight, and abnormal bleeding, that may be problematic for some patients. Here we report the case of a 29-year-old Caucasian woman affected by panic disorder with agoraphobia who was referred to our clinic for recurrent gastroenteric panic symptoms. The patient reported improvement in her anxiety symptoms and panic attacks while on a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, but not in her gastric somatic problems, so the decision was taken to start her on duloxetine, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. After 6 months of treatment, the patient achieved complete remission of her gastric and panic-related symptoms, and was able to stop triple gastric therapy. Other authors have hypothesized and confirmed that duloxetine has greater initial noradrenergic effects than venlafaxine and is effective in patients with panic disorder. This case report underscores the possibility of tailoring therapeutic strategies for the gastroenteric expression of panic disorder. Keywords: anxiety disorder, panic

Little data is yet available on DSM-5 among emergency health operators. The aim of this study was to assess DSM-5 symptomatological PTSD and posttraumatic stress spectrum, as well as their impact on work and social functioning, in the emergency staff of a major university hospital in Italy. One hundred and ten subjects (doctors, nurses, and health-care assistants were recruited at the Emergency Unit of the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Pisana (Italy and assessed by the Trauma and Loss Spectrum-Self Report (TALS-SR and Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS. A 15.7% DSM-5 symptomatological PTSD prevalence rate was found. Nongraduated persons reported significantly higher TALS-SR Domain IV (reaction to loss or traumatic events scores and a significantly higher proportion of individuals presenting at least one maladaptive behavior (TALS-SR Domain VII, with respect to graduate ones. Women reported significantly higher WSAS scores. Significant correlations emerged between PTSD symptoms and WSAS total scores among health-care assistants, nongraduates and women. Our results showed emergency workers to be at risk for posttraumatic stress spectrum and related work and social impairment, particularly among women and nongraduated subjects. Cercosporoid fungi (formerly Cercospora s. lat.) represent one of the largest groups of hyphomycetes belonging to the Mycosphaerellaceae (Ascomycota). They include asexual morphs, asexual holomorphs, or species with mycosphaerella-like sexual morphs. Most of them are leaf-spotting plant pathogens with special phytopathological relevance. In the first part of a new monographic work, cercosporoid hyphomycetes occurring on other fungi (fungicolous species), on ferns (pteridophytes) and gymnosperms were treated. This second part deals with cercosporoid fungi on monocots (Liliopsida; Equisetopsida, Magnoliidae, Lilianae), which covers species occurring on host plants belonging to families arranged in alphabetical order from Acoraceae to Xyridaceae, excluding Poaceae (cereals and grasses) which requires a separate treatment. The species are described and illustrated in alphabetical order under the particular cercosporoid genera, supplemented by keys to the species concerned. A detailed introduction, a survey of currently recognised cercosporoid genera, a key to the genera concerned, and a discussion of taxonomically relevant characters were published in the first part of this series. Neopseudocercospora, an additional recently introduced cercosporoid genus, is briefly discussed. Full Text Available This issue of PORTAL Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies comprises five articles in its general essays section, and two works in its creative works section. We are delighted with the inclusion of the first three essays: “‘A Bit of a Grope’: Gender, Sex and Racial Boundaries in Transitional East Timor,” by Roslyn Appleby; “Undermining the Occupation: Women Coalminers in 1940s Japan,” by Matthew Allen; and “Pan-pan Girls: Humiliating Liberation in Postwar Japanese Literature,” by Rumi Sakamoto. These essays were presented in earlier formats at the two-day workshop, “Gender and occupations and interventions in the Asia Pacific, 1945-2009,” held in December 2009 at the
Centre for Asia Pacific Social Transformation Studies (CAPSTRANS, University of Wollongong. The workshop was convened by Christine de Matos, a research fellow at CAPSTRANS, and Rowena Ward, a Lecturer in Japanese at the Language Centre, in the Faculty of Arts, University of Wollongong. The editorial committee at Portal is particularly grateful to Christine and Rowena for facilitating the inclusion of these essays in this issue of the journal. Augmenting those studies is “Outcaste by Choice: Re-Genderings in a Short Story by Oka Rusmini,” an essay by Harry Aveling, the renowned Australian translator and scholar of Indonesian literature, which provides fascinating insights into the intertextual references, historical contexts and caste-conflicts explored by one of Indonesia’s most important Balinese authors. Liliana Edith Correa’s “El lugar de la memoria: Where Memory Lies,” is an evocative exploration of the newly emergent Latin(o American identifications in Australia as constructed through self-conscious memory work among, and by, a range of Latin American immigrant artists and writers. Dietary water affects human skin hydration and biomechanics

The present study was designed to quantify the impact of dietary water on major indicators of skin physiology. A total of 49 healthy females (mean 24.5±4.3 years were selected and characterized in terms of their dietary daily habits, especially focused in water consumption, by a Food Frequency Questionnaire. This allowed two groups to be set – Group 1 consuming less than 3,200 mL/day (n=38, and Group 2 consuming more than 3,200 mL/day (n=11. Approximately 2 L of water were added to the daily diet of Group 2 individuals for 1 month to quantify the impact of this surplus in their skin physiology. Measurements involving epidermal superficial and deep hydration, transepidermal water loss, and several biomechanical descriptors were taken at day 0 (T0, 15 (T1, and 30 (T2 in several anatomical sites (face, upper limb, and leg. This stress test (2 L/day for 30 days significantly modified superficial and deep skin hydration, especially in Group 1. The same impact was registered with the most relevant biomechanical descriptors. Thus, in this study, it is clear that higher water inputs in regular diet might positively impact normal skin physiology, in particular in those individuals with lower daily water consumptions. In this study, we report the use of a nonviral neurotropic poly(ethylene imine-based nanoparticle that is capable of mediating neuron-specific transfection upon a subcutaneous injection. Nanoparticles were targeted to peripheral neurons by using the nontoxic carboxylic fragment of tetanus toxin (HC, which, besides being neurotropic, is capable of being retrogradely transported from neuron terminals to the cell bodies. Nontargeted particles and naked plasmid DNA were used as control. Five days after treatment by subcutaneous injection in the footpad of Wistar rats, it was observed that 56% and 64% of L4 and L5 dorsal root ganglia neurons, respectively, were expressing the reporter protein. The delivery mediated by HC-functionalized nanoparticles spatially limited the transgene expression, in comparison with the controls. Histological examination revealed no significant adverse effects in the use of the proposed delivery system. These findings demonstrate the feasibility and safety of the developed neurotropic nanoparticles for the minimally invasive delivery of genes to the peripheral nervous system, opening new avenues for the application of gene therapy strategies in the treatment of peripheral

Full Text Available Synthesizing concepts set down on the prologue of the original work, the Architect Liliana Rainis says: «This work aims two aspects of undeniable merit: on the one hand, the unfolding of all the steps of a design process understood in its phases of: specific design, construction and use-verification, and on the hand, the explanation of a method of total design or ecodesign. Both aspects rarely find themselves together in architectural publications on «design», whether it is a matter of books or of specialized magazines; the first aspect, upon arriving at verification, allows the advance on that mere «analysis» or «interpretation» which the bibliography generally permits, in order to complete the true critique up to the evaluation stage, where the designer becomes his own critic. The second aspect develops an actual methodology based on a previous study, delineating a theoretical main part that could shape what the autor calls ecodesign. Coherent with the whole process it studies, the work is organized in the four parts which form that process: design, execution, verification, epilogue. It is therefore a matter of thoughts and explanations which first point out the almost permanent problems of the Argentinian university in its social and political context and within the difficulty to provide particular physical answers to a growing university population, problems which in themselves are interesting and of fundamental importance in our country. Finally, following the conclusions of the work, it is a stimulus to continue studying the problem, both in detail and in general, taking into account the world situation of the last decades where new universities has been developed whether on pedagogical plans or in its physical structures (let us remember the examples of Europe, the United States, Canada, etc., supporting a wide and profound debate which would involve the university in its double aspect: as knowledge activity and as an

Methods: Genotyping was completed by amplification and Sanger sequencing of the GALNS gene. The SWISS-model platform was used for bioinformatic analysis, and mutant proteins were generated by homology from the wild-type GALNS code 4FDI template from the Protein Data Bank (PDB database. Docking was performed using the GalNAc6S ligand (PubChem CID: 193456 by AutoDock Vina 1.0 and visualized in PyMOL and LigPlot+. Results: Eleven variants were identified, and one new pathogenic variant was described in the heterozygous state, which is consistent with genotype c. 319 G>T or p.Ala107Ser. The pathogenic variant c.901G>T or p.Gly301Cys was the most frequent mutation with 51.6% of alleles. Docking revealed affinity energy of −5.9 Kcal/mol between wild-type GALNS and the G6S ligand. Some changes were evidenced at the intermolecular interaction level, and affinity energy for each mutant decreased. Conclusion: Clinical variables and genotypic analysis were similar to those reported for other world populations. Genotypic data showed greater allelic heterogeneity than those previously reported. That is a descriptive study and Familiar APGAR test, which measures the rank of family functionality, proposed by Gabriel Smilkstein (1978, modify for Colombia by Liliana Arias (2006 was used. Full Text Available Si la tradición del grabado circunscribió un repertorio de materiales y técnicas definido y acotado, este historial de convenciones y parámetros de realización se vio cuestionado y revertido desde mediados del siglo XX. El desarrollo de otro tipo de obra gráfica, opuesta a la línea convencional, implicó nuevas posibilidades tanto en términos iconográficos como materiales. Esta línea encuentra dos ejemplos clave en la obra de Jean Dubuffet y Robert Rauschenberg. Si ambos constituyen pilares de la ruptura del canon gráfico europeo y norteamericano, algunos artistas latinoamericanos también produjeron corpora de obras que otorgaron una dimensión original a la gráfica de los años sesenta. En este sentido, entiendo que la obra del argentino Antonio Berni dialoga con la producción contemporánea de Rauschenberg. Berni comienza a incorporar en 1962 materiales propios de la sociedad de consumo en sus xilografías de gran tamaño de la serie de Juanito Laguna con las que ese año obtiene el Gran Premio al Grabado en la XXXI Bienal de Venecia. Algunos años después, Liliana Porter retomó la temática de los rastros y desechos. Sus fotograbados Arruga de 1968 o sus instalaciones con papeles arrugados presentados en Caracas y Santiago de Chile al año siguiente implicaron una reflexión sobre las derivas de la materialidad a partir de la imagen de la destrucción de un soporte básico para el propio médium como es el papel. Las obras de estos artistas desmontaron y redefinieron los límites de esta producción, reciclando objetos descartados o apuntando a una deconstrucción conceptual del sentido canónico de la disciplina. Plantearon una alternativa experimental que se enfrentó crítica pero a la vez dialógicamente con las modalidades convencionales de realización. Dietary protein supplementation boosts muscle-protein synthesis and increases muscle mass in the elderly. This study tested whether adding a protein-rich food, ricotta cheese, to the habitual diet increased total appendicular skeletal muscle mass and strength in elderly people.Methods: Participants (n = 40, were sarcopenic elderly men and women over 60 years of age. Two comparison groups were formed at random and followed for 3 months: the intervention group received 210 g/day of ricotta cheese plus the habitual diet, while the control group followed the habitual diet with no additional intervention. Total appendicular skeletal muscle (TASM was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, while strength was measured using a handheld dynamometer at baseline and after the intervention period. The primary outcomes were the percentage of relative change in TASM and strength.Results: The percentage of relative change in TASM was not significant between the groups after the intervention period. Muscle strength improved in the intervention group, but showed only a tendency towards significance (P = 0.06. Secondary analysis showed that the men in the intervention group gained 270 g in TASM compared to those in the control group, and improved their fasting insulin levels (P = 0.05, muscle strength, lean body mass in the arms, and body weight variables.Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that a nutritional intervention using a high-quality protein food, specifically ricotta cheese, in order to increase the amount of protein intake might not

The disorder is often challenging to diagnose and even more difficult to document in front of the patient or relatives. It represents a challenge for the physician, and any attempt at treatment may be followed by recurrence of the self-mutilation. This paper describes two cases of pathomimia diagnosed by dermatologists and treated in a psychiatry unit, highlighting the importance of collaboration in these situations. Patients and methods: Two case reports, describing old female patients with pathomimia, hospitalized in a department of dermatology for bizarre skin lesions. Results: The first case was a 77-year-old female with unknown psychiatric problems and atrophic skin lesions on the face, self-induced for many months, with multiple hospitalizations in dermatology units, with no response to different therapeutic patterns, and full recovery after psychiatric treatment for a major depressive syndrome. The second case was a 61-year-old female patient with disseminated atrophic scars on the face, trunk, and limbs. She raised our interest because of possible psychiatric issues, as she had attempted to commit suicide. The prescription of antidepressants led to a significant clinical improvement. Conclusion: These cases indicate that a real psychiatric disease may be recorded in patients suffering from pathomimia. Therefore, complete psychiatric evaluation in order to

Therefore, our proposal was to investigate whether ­adding 210 g of ricotta cheese daily would improve skeletal muscle mass, handgrip strength, and ­physical performance in non-sarcopenic older subjects.Subjects and methods: This was a single-blind randomized clinical trial that included two homogeneous, randomized groups of men and women over 60 years of age. Participants in the intervention group were asked to consume their habitual diet but add 210 g of ricotta cheese (IG/HD + RCH, while the control group was instructed to consume only their habitual diet (CG/HD. Basal and 12-week follow-up measurements included appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, handgrip strength by a handheld dynamometer, and physical performance using the short physical performance battery (SPPB and the stair-climb power test (SCPT. The main outcomes were relative changes in ASMM, strength, SPPB, and SCPT.Results: ASMM increased in the IG/HD + RCH (0.6±3.5 kg, but decreased in the CG/HD (–1.0±2.6. Full Text Available Schizophrenia is a multifactorial disease with high genetic heterogeneity and complex inheritance. In Boyacá, Colombia, we studied a group of 20 schizo- phrenic patients (16 men and four women in order to establish their socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, and the genetic and predisposing factors. Cytogenetic studies and a descriptive anal- ysis of qualitative and quantitative variables were done. More often the disease started in young adults (average age of initiation: 22.5 years. The predomi- nant subtype (8/20 was paranoid schizophrenia, with progressive start (14/20. Predisposing factors were found in 15 patients, namely: physical in nine, social in five and economic in one. All cariotypes were normal. Clinical features did not associate with either the sociodemographic characteristics or the genetic and predisposing factors; this is evidence of the clinical heterogeneity of schizophrenia. Patients and their families received genetic counseling and explanations on the results, the possibility of recur- rences and the risk of suffering the disease when a relative is affected by it. Further and larger studies are required in order to determine if the factors eval- uated in this work have influence on the develop- ment of the disease.

In paper 012014 Salvino Ciccariello works out the 3D correlation function of plane objects, specifically a triangle of a general shape. This paves the way to analysing morphologies that can be approximated by cylinders of different cross-sections. Papers 012051 (Polte et al.) and 012047 (Bras et al.) report the use of SAS in combination with X-ray spectroscopy. Ristic et al. describe a real-time study of crystal nucleation induced by ultrasound (012049), while Marianne Imperor-Clerc et al. present an investigation of lyotropic liquid crystals under shear (012052). In the Polymers section Geoff Mitchell describes modelling of SANS data on electrospun fibres (012042), while Cabral et al. describes a study of nanoparticle aggregation in bulk and thin polymer films (012046). Work on phospholipid membranes was reported by Spinozzi et al. and by Onai et al. in papers 012019 and 012018, respectively. The latter deals with the effect of osmotic pressure on model 'lipid rafts', these being considered as having an important role in the function of the mammalian cell membrane.
