    Vitali Kaftanov who died on 14 September 2006, at the age of 74 years old, was an outstanding Russian physicist, professor, and former deputy director of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP) in Moscow. He was born on 3 December 1931 in Moscow into the family of a well-known soviet scientist Sergey Kaftanov. In 1954 he graduated with honours from Moscow State University department of physics, he where specialised in nuclear physics. In the mid-1950s international contacts between Soviet scientists and their foreign colleagues started to develop. The young physicist Vitali Kaftanov, fluent in English, was included in a Soviet government delegation, which participated in international conferences on the peaceful use of atomic energy taking place in Geneva under the auspices of UN.     Full Text Available This paper examines the representation of peasant anger in the writings of Orderic Vitalis. In his texts, Orderic often associates peasant anger with divine vengeance and just violence. Peasants are propelled to act because there are no other agents to help restore order; faced with the unrestrained violence of bad lords, Orderic describes peasants using their anger to ensure justice. Moreover, the low status of peasants ensures an appropriately ignoble death for such lords. Understanding the customary norms around peasant anger reflected in Orderic's work, then, is an important part of understanding medieval models of honourable violence.

    While the health and well-being benefits of physical activity are recognised, people with multiple sclerosis (MS) often face greater barriers than the general population. The Nintendo Wii potentially offers a fun, convenient way of overcoming some of these. The aim was to test the feasibility of conducting a definitive trial of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of Mii-vitaliSe; a home-based, physiotherapist-supported Nintendo Wii intervention. A single-centre wait-list randomised controlled study. MS service in secondary care. Ambulatory, relatively inactive people with clinically confirmed MS. Thirty participants were randomised to receive Mii-vitaliSe either immediately (for 12 months) or after a 6-month wait (for 6 months). Mii-vitaliSe consisted of two supervised Nintendo Wii familiarisation sessions in the hospital followed by home use (Wii Sports, Sports Resort and Fit Plus software) with physiotherapist support and personalised resources. Included self-reported physical activity levels, quality of life, mood, self-efficacy, fatigue and assessments of balance, gait, mobility and hand dexterity at baseline, 6 and 12 months. Interviews (n=25) explored participants' experiences and, at study end, the two Mii-vitaliSe facilitators' experiences of intervention delivery (main qualitative findings reported separately). Mean (SD) age was 49.3 (8.7) years, 90% female, with 47% diagnosed with MS Wii use across both groups over the initial 6-month intervention period was twice a week for 27 min/day. Mean cost of delivering Mii-vitaliSe was £684 per person. Mii-vitaliSe appears acceptable and a future trial feasible and warranted. These findings will inform its design.     The benefits of physical activity for people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) have been recognised. However, exercise regimens can be difficult to maintain over the longer term and pwMS may face unique barriers to physical activity engagement. Pilot research suggests the Nintendo Wii can be used safely at home by pwMS with minimal mobility/balance issues and may confer benefits. We have developed a home-based physiotherapist supported Wii intervention ('Mii-vitaliSe') for pwMS that uses commercial software. This is a pilot study to explore the feasibility of conducting a full scale clinical and cost-effectiveness trial of Mii-vitaliSe. 30 ambulatory, relatively inactive pwMS will be randomised to receive Mii-vitaliSe immediately, or after 6 months. Outcomes, measured at baseline and 6 and 12 months later, will include balance, gait, mobility, hand dexterity and self-reported physical activity levels, fatigue, self-efficacy, mood and quality of life. Interviews conducted on a purposive sample of participants will explore experiences of participation in the study and barriers and facilitators to using the Wii. Mean recruitment, adherence rate and standard deviations (SDs) of potential primary outcomes for the full trial will be estimated and precision summarised using 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Interview transcripts will be thematically analysed using a generic qualitative approach. National Health Service (NHS; ref 12/SC/0420) and university ethical approvals have been obtained as has NHS Research and Development permission from the relevant trust. A home risk assessment will be undertaken for all potential participants. All adverse events will be closely monitored, documented and reported to the study Safety Monitoring Committee. At least one publication in a peer reviewed journal will be produced and research findings presented at a national and international conference.     Abstract
    Any hypothesis aiming to explain the social organisation of Eurasian badgers Meles meles has to consider its wide inter-population variability. We used radiotracking techniques to investigate the spatial organisation and the pattern of space-use by badger in Luxembourg, where badger density can be considered moderate compared to most of Europe.
    Eight badgers belonging to five social groups were caught and radio-collared. The size of individual home ranges, as assesses by 100% minimum convex polygons in spring-summer 2002 and 2003, varied from 42.5 ha to 171.8 ha. Core areas corresponded to the 50-70% kernel isopleths and covered an average of 10.1% of individual home ranges. The home ranges of badgers caught at the same sett overlapped largely (average 83.3%, whilst the overlap between neighbouring ranges did not exceed 13.8%. Altogether six boundary latrines were found at the intersection of group ranges. Overall, the spatial system of the Luxembourg badgers is quite flexible, with the boundaries of some group ranges remaining constant over the years, while others may expand or contract.

    Tramite la radiotelemetria e il monitoraggio delle latrine, la struttura territoriale e l’uso dello spazio da parte del tasso sono stati analizzati in una popolazione del Lussemburgo, dove la densità della specie può essere considerata intermedia rispetto ai valori noti per il resto dell’Europa.

    As 50 doctors and 70 nurses in oncologic dispensaries as well 90 doctors and 110 nurses in tuberculosis dispensaries in Primorye have been studied on the basis of voluntary testing methods supposed by C. Maslach and V.V. Boiko. The aim of this study was to estimate the relative prevalence and psychological features of the "burnout syndrome" among doctors and nurses of oncologic and tuberculosis dispensaries in Primorye Territory. "Emotional burnout" in various stages of its development is much more common among nurses (75% of respondents), compared with physicians (less than 50% tested). In nursing professional burnout syndrome developed significantly more frequently in the more severe form, and with less seniority of professional activity. The dependence of burning on the age and professional experience is more common for physicians. There is an urgent need to study the epidemiology of the "burnout syndrome" and identify ways to prevent the formation of social syndrome in medical personnel.

    This final report for the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) takes a look at work done concerning low energy consumption housing in southern Switzerland. Thanks to large windows in the south-east facade and a well insulated building envelope, the passive solar gains are quoted as providing significant contributions to heating. The remaining heating requirements are covered by a closed fireplace and an electric radiator. Heat is distributed by free convection inside the house, A double-flux ventilation system with heat recovery ensures air renewal (3 volumes per day). Each house has a solar hot water system with electric auxiliary energy supply. Space heating requirements are discussed and compared with the standard values as defined in Swiss energy standards and the conventional auxiliary space heating energy required for the houses is noted.

    Full Text Available The article represents an analysis of String Quartet no. 4 by Boris Dubosarschi. Written in 1985, the work represents a homage to the memory of composer Vitali Verhola who died at the age of 38. Th e work consists of 2 movements – Andante and Allegro risoluto and refl ects the tragic events that caused its appearance. Th e present analysis discusses such aspects of the piece as the main idea, the content and form (determines the thematic origins, the leitmotifs and their role in the structure of the piece, as well as aspects of performance (technical advice and solutions. In addition, it refers to the recording of the piece made by the Radio String Quartet in collaboration with the author.

    Full Text Available ASD teachers require skills that go beyond the realm of most educators including professional competences and high moral qualities. In the work theoretical approaches and experimental research on the problem of subjective personality readiness of correctional teachers in the education of ASD children are carried out. The psychological investigation has been conducted including measurement of psychological indices of 40 teachers of ASD children from the boarding school "Trust" and 40 teachers from mainstream schools of Lviv city aged from 28 to 59 years. The following methods are used: "Questionnaire for the measurement of tolerance" (Magun, Zhamkochyan, Magura, 2000; "Shein’s Career Anchors" method aimed at studying the career orientations of the teachers (Shein, 2010; “Diagnostics of empathy level” (Viktor Boiko, 2001; method of study “Motivation professional activities” by Catelin Zamfir in a modification of Artur Rean (Bordovskaya, & Rean, 2001. Based on the provided studies a program for development of subject-personality readiness of the correctional teacher to work with ASD children is proposed. The program consists of the following components: motivational component (professional competence, self-development, self-determination, self-control; cognitive component (intellectual personality autonomy, self-identification, stability, challenge, integration of lifestyles; emotionally-volitional component (empathy, positive attitude toward a child, intellectual analysis of emotions, self-regulation.

    Rutilio Staderini was one of the leading Italian anatomists of the twentieth century, together with some scientists, such as Giulio Chiarugi, Giovanni Vitali, and others. He was also a member of a new generation of anatomists. They had continued the tradition of the most famous Italian scientists, which started from the Renaissance up until the nineteenth century. Although he carried out important studies of neuroanatomy and comparative anatomy, as well as embryology, his name is rarely remembered by most medical historians. His name is linked to the nucleus he discovered: the Staderini nucleus or intercalated nucleus, a collection of nerve cells in the medulla oblongata located lateral to the hypoglossal nucleus. This article focuses on the biography of the neuroanatomist as well as the nucleus that carries his name and his other research, especially on comparative anatomy and embryology.

  19. Food webs of the Delta, Suisun Bay and Suisun Marsh: an update on current understanding and possibilities for management

    This paper reviews and highlights recent research findings on foodweb processes since an earlier review by Kimmerer et al. (2008). We conduct this review within a conceptual framework of the Delta-Suisun food web, which includes both temporal and spatial components. The temporal component is based on knowledge that the landscape has changed markedly from historical conditions. The spatial component of our framework acknowledges that the food web is not spatially static; it varies regionally and across habitat types within regions. The review highlights the idea of a changing baseline with respect to foodweb function. New research also indicates that interactions between habitat-specific food webs vary across the current landscape. For example, based on early work in the South Delta, the food web associated with submerged aquatic vegetation was thought to provide little support to species of concern; however, data from other regions of the estuary suggest that this conceptual model may not apply across the entire region. Habitat restoration has been proposed as a method of re-establishing historic foodweb processes to support species of concern. Benefits are likely for species that directly access such restored habitats, but are less clear for pelagic species. Several topics require attention to further improve the knowledge of food webs needed to support effective management, including: 1) synthesis of factors responsible for low pelagic biomass; 2) monitoring and research on effects of harmful algal blooms; 3) broadening the scope of long-term monitoring; 4) determining benefits of tidal wetland restoration to species of concern, including evaluations of interactions of habitat-specific food webs; and 5) interdisciplinary analysis and synthesis. The only certainty is that food webs will continue to change in response to the changes in the physical environment and new species invasions.

    Full Text Available The control of micronutrient application in cucumber cultivation has great importance as they participate in many functions of metabolism. In addition, micronutrient application efficiency is fundamental to avoid periods of overconsumption or deficits in the crop. To determine micronutrient accumulation using a dynamic model, two cycles of Vitaly and Luxell cucumber crops were grown. During the development of the crop, micronutrient content (Fe, B, Mn, Cu, and Zn in the different organs of the cucumber plant was quantified. The model dynamically simulated the accumulation of biomass and micronutrients using climatic variables recorded inside the greenhouse as inputs. It was found that a decrease in photosynthetically active radiation and temperature significantly diminished the accumulation of biomass by the cucumber plants. On the other hand, the results demonstrated that the model efficiently simulated both the accumulation of biomass and micronutrients in a cucumber crop. The efficiency evaluation showed values higher than R2 > 0.95. This dynamic model can be useful to define adequate strategies for the management of cucumber cultivation in greenhouses as well as the application of micronutrients.

[Italian] La cine Risonanza Magnetica (cine RM) con stimolo farmacologico {beta}-adrenergico (stress dobutamina) rappresenta una nuova indagine diagnostica nella valuazione pretrattamento di rivascolarizzazione del paziente con infarto del miocardio. Scopo dello studio e' quello di verificare la validita' diagnostica della cine RM con stimolo farmacologico in confronto con l'ecocardiografia con stimolo farmacologico nella valutazione della vitalita' del miocardio e di proporre un nuovo metodo d'analisi delle immagini di cine RM mediante la sottrazione elettronica d'immagine al fine di ridurre gli elementi soggettivi nella valutazione quantitativa dell'ispessimento parietale. Ventisei pazienti (21 maschi, 5 femmine) con pregresso infarto del miocardio in attesa di intervento di rivascolarizzazione sono stati sottoposti a ecocardiografia con stimolo farmacologico mediante dobutamina e a esame cine RM con dobutamina al fine di verificare la ripresa contrattile dei segmenti giudicati acinetici o ipocinetici all'esame ecocardiografico di base. E' stata infusa dobutamina a dosi crescenti (5, 10, 15{gamma}/kg/min). Per ogni paziente sono stati considerati 16 segmenti del ventricolo sinistro. Nel totale di 416 segmenti miocardici considerati l'analisi qualitativa del movimento parietale con ecocardiografia con dobutamina ha dimostrato 307 segmenti normocinetici, 64 cicatriziali e 45 vitali mentre con la cine Rm sono stati osservati rispettivamente 302 segmenti come normocinetici, 83 cicatriziali e 31 vitali. Tre mesi dopo l'intervento di rivascolarizzazione 15 pazienti sono stati rivalutati per verificare la ripresa contrattile dei segmenti giudicati vitali. L'esame ecocardiografico ha mostrato sensibilita' del 79% e specificita' del 97% mentre per l'analisi qualitativa mediante cine RM la sensibilita' e' stata del 96% e la specificita' dell'86%.   5. Public Health, Embodied History, and Social Justice: Looking Forward.

    This essay was delivered as a commencement address at the University of California-Berkeley School of Public Health on May 17, 2015. Reflecting on events spanning from 1990 to 1999 to 2015, when I gave my first, second, and third commencement talks at the school, I discuss four notable features of our present era and offer five insights for ensuring that health equity be the guiding star to orient us all. The four notable features are: (1) growing recognition of the planetary emergency of global climate change; (2) almost daily headlines about armed conflicts and atrocities; (3) growing public awareness of and debate about epic levels of income and wealth inequalities; and (4) growing activism about police killings and, more broadly, "Black Lives Matter." The five insights are: (1) public health is a public good, not a commodity; (2) the "tragedy of the commons" is a canard; the lack of a common good is what ails us; (3) good science is not enough, and bad science is harmful; (4) good evidence--however vital--is not enough to change the world; and (5) history is vital, because we live our history, embodied.     Full Text Available In this paper the problem of convergence of the important type of a multidimensional generalization of continued fractions, the branched continued fractions with independent variables, is considered. This fractions are an efficient apparatus for the approximation of multivariable functions, which are represented by multiple power series. When variables are fixed these fractions are called the branched continued fractions of the special form. Their structure is much simpler then the structure of general branched continued fractions. It has given a possibility to establish the necessary and sufficient conditions of convergence of branched continued fractions of the special form with the positive elements. The received result is the multidimensional analog of Seidel's criterion for the continued fractions. The condition of convergence of investigated fractions is the divergence of series, whose elements are continued fractions. Therefore, the sufficient condition of the convergence of this fraction which has been formulated by the divergence of series composed of partial denominators of this fraction, is established. Using the established criterion and Stieltjes-Vitali Theorem the parabolic theorems of branched continued fractions of the special form with complex elements convergence, is investigated. The sufficient conditions gave a possibility to make the condition of convergence of the branched continued fractions of the special form, whose elements lie in parabolic domains.

    This article is an edited version of a speech presented by Vitaly F. Konovalov, Minister of the Soviet Union's Ministry of Atomic Energy and Industry. Mr. Kovovalov presented the speech on April 8, 1991 to the 24th Annual Conference of the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum in Tokyo, Japan. In his speech, he notes that the current number of plants in operation (46) accounted for 12.5% of the electricity generated in the USSR. According to an energy policy announced in the early 1980's, by the year 2000 electricity generated at nuclear plants would reach 40% of the total generation. Changes in attitude brought about by Chernobyl resulted in a slowdown in the development of nuclear plants, and over 100,000 MWe of new capacity have been abandoned in some stage of design or construction. Current plans call for 7,000 MWe of new capacity between the years 1991 and 1995, and 12,600 MWe over the next five-year period. Accelerated growth is anticipated between 2000 and 2010.   8. Professional burnout syndrome among correctional facility officers.

    Correctional facilities present unique work places--the employees there work in tough, demanding and hazardous working conditions, in real life-threatening environment, subjected to physical and mental fatigue, risk of infectious diseases, work in shifts, with inadequate pay, etc. The aim of this study was to find the prevalence and level of burnout syndrome among employees working in the District Prison of the town of Plovdiv. The study included all employees that had direct contact with the inmates in the prison. We recruited 106 employees that participated in the study anonymously and voluntarily. The main instrument we used was the questionnaire designed according to the methods developed by V. Boiko, which allows identification of professional burnout syndrome in its three phases with four symptoms in each of the phases. We found a high prevalence of burnout syndrome among the staff in the District Prison in Plovdiv (74.53%). All three phases of burnout were found to have a high prevalence rate--the stress phase: 48.11%, the resistance phase: 66.98%, the exhaustion phase: 41.51%. The rank in the service hierarchy was found to be a predictor in the stress phase, B = 0.701, p = 0.048, Exp(B) = 2.106, 95%CI [1.00; 4.04]. The single officers (83.33% of the divorced and 55.56% of the single employees) and those of the staff that were more highly educated (78.72%) had elevated levels of burnout syndrome, and these manifested during the first 5 years of their service in the prison (77.78%). In Bulgaria at present the burnout syndrome has not been studied among employees working in correctional facilities. We found a high prevalence of the syndrome among the employees of the District Prison - Plovdiv. The younger, the single and the more educated employees had greater levels of burnout syndrome, which manifest during the first 5 years of their service.     Full Text Available Gli Okiek (Nilotico meridionale - Kalenjin sono un gruppo di cacciatori-raccoglitori stanziati negli altipiani del Mau Forest Escarpment in Kenya. Fin dall’antichità le loro attività principali sono state la caccia e la raccolta, in special modo quella del miele. Dopo aver rappresentato per secoli il bene di scambio più prezioso con le vicine popolazioni di agricoltori e pastori Nandi e Maasai di cui gli Okiek erano definiti Dorobo, ovvero servitori, il miele rimane a tutt’oggi l’elemento nutrizionale più ricco della loro dieta. Nel lontano 1955 Huntingford scriveva che il miele per gli Okiek rappresentava qualcosa di sacro, esattamente come il latte di vacca per i Nandi ed altri gruppi pastorali nilotici. Tracce di questo valore sacro si ritrovano ancora oggi nella cultura materiale degli Okiek legata alla raccolta e al consumo (domestico e rituale del miele. In questo articolo, basato su dati raccolti durante una ricerca sul campo nella regione di Mariashoni tra gennaio e febbraio 2013, cercherò di dare conto dei saperi tecnici, linguistici e culturali legati alle attività dell’apicoltura tra gli Okiek. In breve tratterò della conoscenza delle api e dei loro cicli vitali, del valore del miele nelle attività quotidiane, delle tecniche di costruzione delle arnie tradizionali e delle tecniche di raccolta e conservazione del miele. L’articolo è accompagnato da un lessico culturale e da una serie di tavole illustrative.

    Full Text Available RESUMO: O presente trabalho avalia algumas metodologias utilizadas na determinação do módulo de deformação cisalhante para a previsão do comportamento dinâmico de fundações superficiais de aerogeradores assentes em solos arenosos. Para avaliar o comportamento dinâmico das fundações de máquinas, deve-se estimar a frequência de vibração do sistema solo-fundação que é calculada em função dos parâmetros dinâmicos do solo. Tal frequência é obtida a partir do módulo de deformação cisalhante (G, que, por sua vez, é função do nível de deformação do solo. Por simplificações, esse parâmetro é normalmente estimado através de ensaios estáticos, com grandes deformações, estando sujeito a imprecisões. No presente trabalho, calcularam-se os parâmetros dinâmicos do solo do campo experimental de fundações da Universidade Estadual de São Paulo (UNESP, em Bauru, a partir dos resultados de ensaios anteriormente realizados no local por VITALI (2011. Foi considerado um aerogerador com características idênticas ao aerogerador avaliado por Moura (2007 inserido no solo em análise. Assim, determinaram-se as frequências de vibrações da fundação de tal aerogerador. Tais frequências foram determinadas a partir de estimativas G por meio de ensaios estáticos e dinâmicos. Concluiu-se que as variações obtidas para o módulo cisalhante, com grandes e pequenas deformações, causaram um erro percentual cerca de 40% nas frequências e cerca de 60% nas amplitudes de vibrações. Destacam-se, com tal resultado, as variações das respostas dinâmicas quando são estimados por ensaios de grande e pequena deformação, reafirmando a importância de ensaios de pequena deformação para estimativas de respostas a carregamentos dinâmicos.   11. DETERMINANTS OF THE PROFESSIONAL BURNOUT SYNDROME OF PEDAGOGUES IN THE PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH ASPECT

    Full Text Available The aim of this paper was to analyze the relationship of the professional burnout syndrome of pedagogues and the psychological well-being of the professionals as well as their personality  adaptive  resources.  The  empirical  study  was  carried  out  using  the  following  inventories: “Maslach  Burnout  Inventory”  (Maslach-Jackson  adapted  by  Vodopianova;  “Questionnaire Emotional Burnout” (V. V. Boiko; multilevel personal questionnaire “Adaptation-MLOAM” (A. G. Maklakov and S. V. Chermjanin; “Psychological Well-Being Scales” (Caroll D. Ryff. Mathematical processing of the empirical data was done with help of SPSS v.13.0 program for Windows. The experimental investigation carried out on a sample of 40 pedagogues has shown that statistically signi?cant negative correlations exist between the level of professional burnout and the adaptive personality potential measures as well as between professional burnout level and the level of psychological well-being of the pedagogues. Although the correlational data obtained in this research do not allow to de?ne the personality determinants of the pedagogues’ burn out, they suggest several hypotheses for further research. The ?rst one is about the sense of the correlation between the adaptive potential of the personality and the level of burnout: one can expect that a low level of adaptive potential can be one of the determinants of burnout. The second hypothesis is that one can expect that the low level psychological well-being can cause teachers’ burnout. The last hypotheses can be explicated by mentioning that psychological well-being includes several scales: the ?rst of them is the scale of self-acceptance – the level of self-acceptance might possibly be a determinant of burnout as well as any other psychological well-being scales.   12. Iterative User Interface Design for Automated Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Score Calculator in Sepsis Detection.

    The new sepsis definition has increased the need for frequent sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score recalculation and the clerical burden of information retrieval makes this score ideal for automated calculation. The aim of this study was to (1) estimate the clerical workload of manual SOFA score calculation through a time-motion analysis and (2) describe a user-centered design process for an electronic medical record (EMR) integrated, automated SOFA score calculator with subsequent usability evaluation study. First, we performed a time-motion analysis by recording time-to-task-completion for the manual calculation of 35 baseline and 35 current SOFA scores by 14 internal medicine residents over a 2-month period. Next, we used an agile development process to create a user interface for a previously developed automated SOFA score calculator. The final user interface usability was evaluated by clinician end users with the Computer Systems Usability Questionnaire. The overall mean (standard deviation, SD) time-to-complete manual SOFA score calculation time was 61.6 s (33). Among the 24% (12/50) usability survey respondents, our user-centered user interface design process resulted in >75% favorability of survey items in the domains of system usability, information quality, and interface quality. Early stakeholder engagement in our agile design process resulted in a user interface for an automated SOFA score calculator that reduced clinician workload and met clinicians' needs at the point of care. Emerging interoperable platforms may facilitate dissemination of similarly useful clinical score calculators and decision support algorithms as "apps." The aim of this study is to test the new PTIN for correlation with the left ventricular mass index (LVMI. Methods: Oscillometrically generated waveform files (n=137 used for clinical research studies were reanalyzed using the new 2013 version of the Vasotens technology program, which enables PTIN calculations. Results: A good correlation (r=−0.72 between the PTIN and the LVMI was shown, which was significantly above the blood pressure load (r=0.41. Conclusion: The PTIN generated by the Vasotens technology can be recommended as an indicator of end organ damage via hypertension. The aim of this work is to verify the effect of a 12-week resistance exercise program on the general physical aptitude and cognitive capacities of elderly and sedentary women. Twenty-nine women (65.87±5.69 years were divided into two groups. The control group was composed of eight elderly women who met the same inclusion criteria of the study and the strength training group was composed of 29 elderly women who were subjected to a resistance exercise program defined by 12 upper and lower limb exercises combined in 3×10 repetitions with 1-minute interval between repetitions and two resting minutes between exercises (three times/week. Weight loads were fixed between 60% and 75% of the apparent 1 repetition maximum, which was estimated by the test of 10 maximum repetitions. The School and Conference included a series of invited talks given by leading professors with the aim to introduce young scientists with actual problems and major advances in physics and technology. The keynote speakers were Mikhail V. Maximov (Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute RAS, Russia) Vladimir G. Dubrovskii (St. Petersburg Academic University and St. Petersburg State University, Russia) Anton Yu. Egorov (JSC Connector Optics, Russia) Victor V. Luchinin (St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University, Russia) Vladislav E. Bugrov (St. Petersburg University of Internet Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, Russia) Vitali A. Quest’ultima tematica unita a quella della green economy potrebbero rappresentare l'occasione di intervenire sui sistemi territoriali non urbani, un tempo vitali per l’economia locale, ed oggi abbandonati a se stessi a favore delle aree urbanizzate, luoghi economicamente più vantaggiosi. Partendo dalle indicazioni del Programma per l’Ambiente delle Nazioni Unite (UNEP si potrebbero definire politiche di sviluppo al fine di migliorare la competitività e l'attrattività dei sistemi territoriali rurali attraverso la valorizzazione delle risorse endogene presenti su tali territori, con l’obiettivo di favorire lo sviluppo ecosostenibile delle diverse attività al fine di creare una rete integrata. La ricerca svolta presenta le diverse dinamiche legate alla creazione di una rete di Eco-Villaggi, con lo scopo di rifunzionalizzare il patrimonio edilizio e urbanistico esistente, migliorando, così, la qualità della vita dei centri montani. Questo modello può rappresentare concretamente una delle possibili soluzioni allo spopolamento, nel conservare e tutelare lo spazio naturale attraverso la promozione della green economy, basata sull’utilizzo di sistemi di produzione sostenibili, nel rispetto dei requisiti ambientali, nell’attivazione di sistemi energetici rinnovabili e nel richiamo turistico del patrimonio storico-culturale della montagna.     Full Text Available The questions of the search, pharmacological activity and standardization of natural extracts are appropriate and important for national pharmaceutical science and practice. Since 2000, one of the key points of the Action Plan to ensure the integration of Ukraine into the European Union is development of the State Pharmacopoeia of Ukraine harmonized with the European Pharmacopoeia (PhEur.Aim: A comparative analysis of herbal material according to the methods for tropane group alkaloids determination, as described in the PhEur and in the 11th Edition of USSR Pharmacopoeia Monographs «Stramonium leaf».Methods: Datura leaves samples have been harvested during 2010-2012 in different regions of Ukraine for experimental research. Identification of tropane group alkaloids was carried out by the method of thin-layer chromatography (TLC and by Vitali-Morin colour reaction. According to the PhEur method, firstly Dragendorff reagent and then Sodium nitrite solutions were used for the TLC plates spraying. Alkaloids assay was carried out by alkalimetry method with indicator determination of equivalence point.Results: Datura leaves qualitative features, defined by PhEur and the 11th Edition of USSR Pharmacopoeia Monographs «Stramonium leaf», as well as their rationing have been analyzed. Certain differences concerning regulated quality parameters of herbal material have been determined. A comparative analysis of the natural extracts by described in the given normative documents methods for determination of tropane group alkaloids content has been done. After spraying the TLC plates with Sodium nitrite solution, red-brown zones corresponding Hyoscyamine were determined. Hyoscine zones were characterized by less intense color. As a result of quantitative determination it was determined that the alkaloids content in analyzed Datura leaves samples was within the limits regulated by the PhEur and the 11th Edition of USSR Pharmacopoeia – more than 0

    Early biotechnology (BT) had its roots in fascinating discoveries, such as yeast as living matter being responsible for the fermentation of beer and wine. Serious controversies arose between vitalists and chemists, resulting in the reversal of theories and paradigms, but prompting continuing research and progress. Pasteur's work led to the establishment of the science of microbiology by developing pure monoculture in sterile medium, and together with the work of Robert Koch to the recognition that a single pathogenic organism is the causative agent for a particular disease. Pasteur also achieved innovations for industrial processes of high economic relevance, including beer, wine and alcohol. Several decades later Buchner, disproved the hypothesis that processes in living cells required a metaphysical 'vis vitalis' in addition to pure chemical laws. Enzymes were shown to be the chemical basis of bioconversions. Studies on the formation of products in microbial fermentations, resulted in the manufacture of citric acid, and chemical components required for explosives particularly in war time, acetone and butanol, and further products through fermentation. The requirements for penicillin during the Second World War lead to the industrial manufacture of penicillin, and to the era of antibiotics with further antibiotics, like streptomycin, becoming available. This was followed by a new class of high value-added products, mainly secondary metabolites, e.g. steroids obtained by biotransformation. By the mid-twentieth century, biotechnology was becoming an accepted specialty with courses being established in the life sciences departments of several universities. Starting in the 1970s and 1980s, BT gained the attention of governmental agencies in Germany, the UK, Japan, the USA, and others as a field of innovative potential and economic growth, leading to expansion of the field.     patient comorbidities and preferences, prescribed by a pain management practitioner. The PENFS group will include the above therapies in addition to the PENFS treatments. The PENFS subject group will have the Neuro-Stim System placed on the ear for 5 days then removed and replaced once per week for 4 weeks. The primary outcome will be resting functional magnetic resonance imaging connectivity between DMN and insula, which will also be correlated with pain relief and functional improvements. This connectivity will be analyzed utilizing functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (fcMRI) and will be compared with patient-reported analgesic improvements as indicated by the DVPRS and patient-reported analgesic medication consumption. Pain and function will be further evaluated using Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System measures and measures describing a person's functional status from Activity and Participation section of the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health. This trial has been funded by the Veterans Health Administration Program Office. This study attained approval by the Emory University/Veterans Affairs (VA) institutional review board and VA Research & Development committee. Institutional review board expedited approval was granted on 2/7/17 (IRB00092224). The study start date is 6/1/17 and estimated completion date is 5/31/20. The recruitment started in June 2017. This is a feasibility study that is meant to demonstrate the practicality of using fcMRI to study the neural correlates of PENFS outcomes and provide information regarding power calculations in order to design and execute a larger randomized controlled clinical trial to determine the efficacy of PENFS for improving pain and function.     >Riassunto La riproduzione in cattività e la conservazione della diversità dei mammiferi europei Il numero di specie e la variabilità intraspecifica dei Mammiferi paleartici è stata generalmente sottostimata nei decenni in cui il Concetto Biologico di Specie è stato adottato. Ciò ha portato a sottovalutare le minacce ai Mammiferi europei e a basare l'attività di conservazione principalmente sulla traslocazione di individui da popolazioni vitali dell'Europa orientale. Molti di questi progetti hanno effettivamente portato al ritorno di alcune specie scomparse localmente e quindi al ripristino di una migliore funzionalità ecologica, ma non alla protezione della diversità dei Mammiferi europei. Il presente lavoro si avvale dei risultati di un numero sempre crescente di ricerche filogeografiche che hanno evidenziato complessi modelli di distribuzione e di differenziazione genetica in Europa. L'esistenza di Unità di Conservazione finora criptiche e a volte severamente minacciate, deve portare a riconsiderare il ruolo dei programmi di riproduzione in cattività per i Mammiferi europei. Al fine di massimizzare l'utilizzo delle risorse disponibili, si propone di suddividere tali programmi in due categorie. I programmi di riproduzione in cattività Livello I fanno pienamente parte della strategia di conservazione di taxa seriamente minacciati, come Lynx pardinus o Ursus arctos marsicanus. Questi programmi devono essere finanziati da agenzie pubbliche e devono essere realizzati sia in strutture ad hoc che eventualmente in qualificati giardini zoologici. I programmi Livello II interessano taxa non in immediato pericolo ma potenzialmente vulnerabili per intrinseche caratteristiche biologiche. Tali programmi devono essere finanziati dal settore privato e dovrebbero essere realizzati esclusivamente in giardini zoologici, allo scopo di non distogliere fondi dalla conservazione 'in situ'.     delle principali lesioni interne con adeguata e istantanea pianificazione del trattamento chirurgico d'emergenza e/o rianimativo di supporto. Scopo del presente lavoro e' quello di illustrare il ruolo dell'esame TC nel documentare le molteplici e complesse lesioni pleuropolmonari, cardiovasali e della parete toracica, la cui compromissione si manifesta con semeiologia specifica e acuta del tutto diversa da quella della traumatologia toracica classica. Negli ultimi 4 anni sono stati osservati presso il pronto soccorso dell'Ospedale Loreto Mare di Napoli 76 casi di ferite d'arma da fuoco, di cui 26 con interessamento toracico: 25 maschi e una femmina (eta' media 32 anni, compresa tra 17 e 48 anni). Tutti i pazienti sono stati sottoposti a TC d'urgenza del torace con iniezione endovenosa di mdc e con tecnica angio-TC e in presenza del medico rianimatore con monitoraggio delle funzioni vitali e dello stato di shock. In 4 casi e' stato completato con studio TC dell'addome e pelvi per la presenza di lesioni associate toraco-addominali e in 3 casi con TC del cranio per lesioni encefaliche da proiettile. Il radiogramma del torace consente di documentare i danni maggiori toraco-polmonari d'arma da fuoco, anche se non permette la valutazione precisa delle lesioni cardiache e dei grandi vasi e dei pneumotoraci minimali. L'associazione di alterazioni traumatiche cranio-addominali concomitanti indirizza l'approccio diagnostico verso una metodica di primo livello come la TC, in grado di fornire con un unico esame il giudizio immediato sul grado di compromissione, panoramicita' e gravita' delle lesioni da arma da fuoco polmonari e extratoraciche. Cio' consente di instaurare la terapia tempestiva e mirata, sia essa chirurgica o di supporto rianimativo, evitando ritardi diagnostici e di gestione terapeutica sicuramente dannosi per la sopravvivenza del paziente.

    automatico (CO{sub 2}-Angioset-Optimed, Ettingen, Germany) 39 pazienti (29 uomini, 10 donne; eta' media 47 anni; intervallo 23-76 anni). 18 pazienti presentavano controindicazioni assolute e relativa ai mdc iodati, in 6 il mdc iodato non aveva fornito immagini adeguate alla diagnosi mentre in 4 il gas e' stato utilizzato a scopo comparativo. In 9 pazienti sono state valutate le arterie renali, in 18 la pervieta' portale, in 7 il circolo arterioro periferico, in 4 le vene degli arti. In uno con andidride carbonica e' stata evidenziata una fistola artero-venosa iatrogena renale trattata con embolizzazione transcatetere. Tutti i pazienti sono stati monitorati per le funzioni vitali (pressione arteriosa, elettrocardiogramma, saturazione di ossigeno) e sono state annotate le sensazioni riferite durante la procedura. In 9 angiografie delle arterie renali si e' avuta valida dimostrazione del tronco e delle branche principali ma scarsa visualizzazione delle arterie interlobari e arcuate. Si e' ottenuta soddisfacente visualizzazione in 5 delle 7 procedure eseguite per la valutazione del circolo periferico, mentre in 2 si e' avuta incompleta opacizzazione dell'aorta addominale e delle arterie iliache. Lo studio del distretto venoso si e' rivelato sempre valido. Inoltre l'individuazione della fistola artero-venosa iatrogena renale e' stata eccellente. Si e' riscontrata una complicanza (2,57%) transitoria dovuta probabilmente a ischemia mesenterica durante iniezione nell'aorta caratterizzata da diarrea, risoltasi spontaneamente in pochi minuti.     The following describes most of the presentations (both oral and poster) given at the International Symposium of Ultrasound in the Control of Industrial Processes (UCIP 2012) celebrated in Madrid between 18 and 20 April 2012. This event was intended to be a meeting point for scientists, engineers and professionals from all over the world in the field of ultrasonics applied to the characterization and control of materials and processes in the industry. More precisely, the topics included were: 1. Novel applications of ultrasound in the industry (including high-power ultrasound) Food science Biotechnology and microbiology Pharmaceutics and cosmetics Petrochemistry and civil engineering 2. New insights in the ultrasonic characterization of media: Fluids and emulsions Nano- and micro-particle dispersions Soft materials Porous bodies and inhomogeneous materials 3. New developments in ultrasonic measuring techniques: Acoustic microscopy Piezoelectric sensors Ultrasonic imaging Signal processing The symposium was organized by the Centro de Acústica Aplicada y Evaluación No Destructiva (CAEND, UPM-CSIC) in collaboration with the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and the University of Leeds. During the conference, 32 posters and 33 oral communications were presented.     , where he wrote his seminal paper. The second strength of this book is that it shows how Kerr's discovery related to other developments in the field. Progress in physics is rarely made in isolation and there is a strong supporting cast in this drama. The key to his breakthrough was the simplification of Einstein's equations entailed in studying what are termed `shear-free' solutions. The first clue came from Ray Sachs, whose studies of asymptotically shear-free bundles of light-rays reduced Einstein's equations to manageable form. Ivor Robinson and Andrzej Trautman then considered bundles which are shear-free everywhere but they were looking for solutions with gravity waves rather than time-independent ones and so missed the great discovery. Kerr learnt about these developments at a 1962 meeting on Gravitation and General Relativity in Warsaw, which clearly played a seminal role in the development of his ideas. But what most excited him was the enthusiastic summary of Vitaly Ginzburg, extolling the virtues of general relativity and emphasizing the need to understand strong gravity effects such as rotation. In any case, he returned to Austin convinced that he had the tools required to solve the problem. At first, he was discouraged when Newman claimed to prove that no shear-free space is possible but fortunately Kerr found a mistake in this work. By using coordinates which incorporated the rotational symmetry of the problem, he was able to find an exact solution in which the metric contains an event horizon and is asymptotically rotating. Since the Warsaw meeting played such a crucial role, it is interesting to recall that Richard Feynman also attended the meeting and described it in rather unflattering terms in a letter to his wife [2]: `I am not getting anything out of the meeting. I am learning nothing. Because there are no experiments, this field is not an active one, so few of the best men are doing work in it. The result is that there are hosts of dopes here and it
