The dynamic characteristics of certain types of deep seismic waves make it possible to study the fine structure of the transition region from the crust to the mantle (region M), i.e., to clarify whether that structure is represented by a sharp boundary with jumps in the velocities between the thick layers, a transition zone with a smooth increment in velocity with depth, or a fine-layered zone with layers with elevated or lowered velocity. An examination is made of a method of using the dynamic characteristics of the waves for studying the fine structure of region M. A discussion is made of the ambiguity and degree of reliability of seismic data interpretation in the course of using various classes of interpretive models, and of informative possibilities of various types of waves. A discussion is made of the method of using pre-critical deep reflected waves for studying time changes in the fine structure of region M in various tectonic provinces. This would be of interest for the study of plutonic processes and the nature of the Mohorovicic discontinuity. 246 references, 69 figures, 13 tables.
