  1. Synthesis, structural characterization and fluctuation conductivity of HoBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-{delta}-}SrTiO{sub 3} composites

    Single-phase polycrystalline samples of HoBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-{delta}} superconductor and SrTiO{sub 3} isolator were produced by means of the solid state reaction technique. After structural characterization of both materials, superconductor-isolator composites were produced with nominal isolator volume percentages between 0% and 10%. Resistivity measurements for the composites and the HoBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-{delta}} sample with different currents evidenced a superconducting transition with critical temperature T{sub C} = 92 K, with wider transitions with increasing either isolator content or measurement current. Fluctuation conductivity analyses were carried out to obtain the exponents characterizing the conductivity divergence. Above T{sub C}, apart from the typical Gaussian and critical fluctuations an atypical regime with critical exponent about 0.14 is observed as a precursor of the transition. Below T{sub C}, it is observed that the coherence transition characteristic exponent increases rapidly with increasing isolator percentage in the composites and does not show important changes when modifying the current in the pure superconductor sample.

  2. Phase-glass scaling near the coherence transition in granular HoBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-{delta}} superconducting thin films

    Systematic measurements of electrical magnetoconductivity near the coherence transition of granular HoBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-{delta}} thin films are reported. Experiments performed in magnetic fields ranging from 0 to 2500 Oe reveal that close to the coherence transition temperature T{sub c0}(H), the correlation length scales as a power law of temperature with a thermal-dependent critical exponent, {nu}. In low external fields the corresponding value of {nu} is consistent with the two-dimensional phase-glass model, which is in the same dynamical universality class of the so-called vortex-glass model.     In the high-Tsub(c) superconductors YBa 2 Cu 3 Osub(7-x) and HoBa 2 Cu 3 Osub(7-x) the Doppler-broadened positron annihilation lineshape parameter is studied as a function of temperature. Anomalies are detected around the transition temperature found by resistance measurements, giving indirect support for an electronic mechanism for superconductivity. The positron lifetimes in these compounds are measured at room temperature and are found to be similar. The origins of the several lifetimes found and their intensities are discussed. (author)

    Doppler broadened lineshapes of the gamma lines from positron annihilation in Y(Basub(2-x) Srsub(x))Cu 3 )Osub(7-δ) superconductors were measured with x = 0.0 to 1.2. Results are indicative of additional oxygen vacancies introduced by doping. (author)

  5. Thermoelectric power of YBa2Cu3Osub(7-δ) under pressure upto 9GPa

    Thermoelectric power (TEP) of two YBa 2 Cu 3 Osub(7-δ) compounds (with δ=0.17 and 0.21) was measured as a function of quasi-hydrostatic pressure up to 9GPa at 300 K on samples with low porosity. In both cases TEP decreases with increasing pressure, at a rate ∼0.8μVK -1 /GPa. The data obtained under hydrostatic pressure up to 3 GPa are in good agreement with those under quasi-hydrostatic pressure. The TEP of both compositions is found to decrease linearly at a rate 0.8 μVK -1 /GPa above 1.5 GPA. (author). 17 refs

  6. Raman and infrared results on YBa2Cu3Osub(7-x) type materials

    We report both Raman and infrared results on the same semiconducting YBa 2 Cu 3 Osub(7-x) material. With the appropriate heat treatment, this material can be reversibly changed from an orthorhombic superconductor x approx. = 0.0) to a semiconductor (x > 0.5). In the semiconducting material it is easier to measure the phonon features using either technique, and we observe almost the number of modes allowed. By simultaneously considering the modes observed by both techniques, using group theory to sort out the modes in both phases, and using projection operators to determine the symmetry adapted vectors, we arrive at an understanding of some of the modes. We find few differences when comparing our results to other measurements in the superconducting phase. The two general conclusions that we arrive at are: 1) splittings of the modes due to lowering the symmetry from tetragonal to the superconducting orthorhombic phase are not observed; 2) no frequency renormalizations, of the type that have been discussed theoretically, are observed.   7. The structure of the non-superconducting phase La3Ba3Cu6Osub(14+ x) and its relation to the high - Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3Osub(7 -delta)

    The authors report time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction results, which confirm that the structure of La 3 Ba 3 Cu 6 Osub(14+x) is isomorphous with the tetragonal variant of YBa 2 Cu 3 Osub(7-delta); in particular, the copper coordination and calculated valencies of both compounds agree closely. The apparent contradiction of stoichiometries between these two phases is resolved by ordering of the large cations consistent with a formulation La(Lasub(0.25)Basub(0.75)) 2 Cu 3 Osub(7+1/2x). The present results indicate that there is a remarkable structural stability from RA 2 Cu 3 O 6 to RA 2 Cu 3 Osub(7.2), although superconductivity appears to be confined to the range RA 2 Cu 3 Osub(6.5) to Ra 2 Cu 3 O 7 .   8. The vacancy order-disorder transition in Ba2YCu3Osub(7-delta) observed by means of electron diffraction and electron microscopy

    It is shown by means of electron microscopy and electron diffraction that the ''structural'' vacancies in Ba 2 YCu 3 Osub(7-delta) undergo an order-disorder transformation accompanied by a change in symmetry from orthorhombic to tetragonal. A superstructure due to the ordering of vacancies was found in certain crystal parts; it leads to doubling of the asub(0) parameter. It is shown that the ordering of the vacancies is important for the superconducting behaviour. In order to obtain a high Tsub(c) superconductor the final heat treatment is crucial. (author)

    Magnetic properties of RBa 2 Cu 3 Osub(9-delta) with R = Y, Gd, Dy, Er have been measured for 4.2 K < T < 300 K and magnetic fields up to 7 T. They exhibit a superconductive transition around 91 K, above which temperature the magnetisation can be described by a Curie-Weiss law. The magnetic and superconductive properties develop independently below the phase transition. Magnetic hysteresis is prominent at low temperatures (T < or approx. 25 K) and varies for different samples. Estimates for critical densities are given. (author)

  11. Heavy atom disorder in the high Tsub(c) superconductor Ba2YCu3Osub(7-delta) studied by means of electron microscopy and electron diffraction

    It is shown that on rapid cooling of the compound Ba 2 YCu 3 Osub(7-δ) one obtains a highly disordered material in which the perovskite framework is conserved but in which barium and yttrium atoms exhibit a high degree of disorder. This leads to lattice deformations, which can be visualized in the electron microscope. The electron diffraction patterns also reveal the disorder. As-quenched specimens are no longer high Tsub(c) superconductors, but the superconducting properties can be recovered by an adequate heat treatment whereby the vacancies become ordered. (author)

  12. Light refraction in PbMgsub(1/3)Nbsub(2/3)Osub(3) ferroelectric with a diffuse phase transition

    In PbMgsub(1/2)Nbsub(2/3)Osub(3) ferroelectric with a diffuse phase transition refractive indeX variations with temperature are studied for two wavelengths of 0.63 and 0.44 μm in the 140-600 K temperature range, and refractive index dispersion is measured at room temperature. A broad smooth peak of rate of light refraction temperation changes in the 300-310 K range that coincides with the previously observed by other authors on the temperatUre dependence of microwave dielectric permittivity. A refractive properties anomaly is also observed at 156 K that is related with another phase transition at this temperature. Mechanisms of refractive index thermal variations are analyzed and a ferroelectric contribution into light refraction that equals approximately 4x10 -2 at 140 K is found. The contribution remains up to 600 K due to polarization fluctuations. It is shown that within the frames of dispersion theory the effect of ferroelectric ordering on light refraction can be explained by changes of both frequency and effective oscillator force

    DBAR (Doppler Broadened Positron Annihilation Radiation) has been measured as a function of temperature in a superconducting (orthorhombic) and a nonsuperconducting (tetragonal) YBCO compound. Each spectrum is deconvoluted off the instrumental resolution function and analysed using PAACFIT. An electronic structural change leading to higher momentum state of the oxygen valence electron and increase in electron density at the oxygen vacancy sites are suggested. (author)

    The authors present the main results of a detailed electron microscopical study of sintered YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/0sub(7-x), and discuss their relevance to observed critical current and its modification by increased silicon impurity levels. In the light of these results, the prospects are assessed for controlling microstructure development so as to optimize the critical current for technological application.

    Slip-processing technique has been used to fabricate tapes and alumina-supported films of superconducting YBa 2 Cu 3 Osub(7-x). Good densification and connectivity are revealed by scanning electron microscopy.     The technique of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) has been employed to detect Bi/sup 3 +/ ions and associated oxides Bi/sub 3/Osub(x)sup(+)(x=1 to 4) from a Bi foil. Using a 3 keV Ar/sup +/ ion primary beam of 5x10/sup -7/ A/cm/sup 2/, mass resolution to nearly 700 with the requisite sensitivity has been achieved. The Bi surface was also monitored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA). The presence of a weak O 1s peak at 532.7 eV and a strong SIMS Bi/sup 3 +/ peak is interpreted to mean that the oxygen is weakly incorporated into the Bi lattice without disrupting metal-metal bonds.

    Processing studies on varied shape-forming and densification of bulk ceramic superconductor, YBa 2 Cu 3 Osub(7-δ), are reported in this paper. Polyvinyl butyral-polyethylene glycol-trichloroethylene has been found to be the best binder-plasticizer-solvent system in plastic shape-forming. The effect of initial particle morphology on final densification has been the most sensitive single parameter as compared to compaction pressure and final sintering durations at ∼930degC. 1-2-3 powders of mean particle size ∼1.94μm have yielded sintered densities ∼92%T.D. albeit with lower oxygen intake Osub(6.7).   20. Irradiation of a CANDU UOsub(2) fuel element with twenty-three machined slits cut through the zircaloy sheath

    A CANDU fuel element was purposely defected, exposing a minimum UOsub(2) fuel stack area of 272 mmsup(2), by machining 23 longitudinal slits through the Zircaloy-4 sheathing. The element was then irradiated in the X-2 loop of the NRX reactor for a period of 14.64 effective full power days at a linear heat rating of 48 kW/m to investigate the relationship between fission product release and UOsub(2) oxidation behaviour in an element with minimal fuel-to-gap fission gas trapping. The fission product releases, as measured by on-line gamma-ray spectroscopy, revealed that the noble gases and radioiodines are both released from the UOsub(2) fuel matrix directly to the coolant via simple diffusion kinetics, and that their diffusivities in hyperstoichiometric UOsub(2) are approximately equal. The oxidation of UOsub(2) to the higher states UOsub(2+x), Usub(4)Osub(9) and Usub(3)Osub(8), was accompanied by substantial fuel swelling and sheath deformation preferentially located in the lower powered end of the element.   1. Growth of high-temperature superconductor crystals from flux

    Crystallization of high-temperature superconductors was studied in La-Sr-Cu-O, Y-Ba-Cu-O and Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O systems. Platelet crystals YBa 2 Cu 3 Osub(6.5+x) were obtained by spontaneous crystallization from homogeneous nonstoichiometric melts enriched in barium and copper oxides. Lasub(2-x)Sr x CuO 4 was prepared by slow cooling of melts enriched in copper oxide. Bi 2 (Sr, Ca)sub(n+1)Cu n O y , (n=1;2) was obtained by melting zone travelling. The crystals show transition to superconducting state at T=93K, ΔT 0.2-0.5 K (Y, Ba cuprate), T=87K, ΔT 2K (Bi, Sr, Ca-cuprate). La, Sr-cuprate single crystals obtained by Czochralski method did not show transition to superconducting state. For flux-grown crystals T c was 5-26 K depending on the composition, growth and heat treatment.   2. Oxygen redistribution in (UCe)Osub(2-x)

    Redistribution of oxygen has been investigated in (Usub(0,7)Cesub(0,3))Osub(2-x) mixed oxide subjected to a temperature gradient in laboratory experiments, in order to apply the results to the nuclear fuel (UPu)Osub(2-x). Cylindrical sintered oxide specimens were exposed to temperature up to 1300 0 C with a longitudinal thermal gradient of about 400 0 C/cm. The most interesting feature of the experimental set-up is a solid-state electrochemical gauge (ThO 2 - Y 2 O 3 ), placed in the cold part of the sample which allows a continuous measurement of the oxygen activity. The experiments showed a fast oxygen migration down the thermal gradient. The calculations performed with a model based on solid-state thermodiffusion are in good agreement with experimental results. The heat of transport Q measured for bare samples reaches (7.2+-0.5)-kcal/mole. When the sample is coated with a tight fitting metallic cladding, an extra term Qe has to be added to the heat of transport Qe. This was interpreted as an electrotransport phenomena. On the same basis, calculations applied to radial oxygen redistribution in (UPu)Osub(2-x) seem to be adequate at least during the first stage of irradiation, taking Q=(20+-5)kcal/mole [fr

  3. The electrode kinetics of the evolution and dissolution of oxygen at the urania-zirconia interfaces

    In order to assess the potential of urania-yttria fluorite-type solid solutions as electrodes for high-temperature electrolysis of steam, oxygen evolution and dissolution reactions have been studied at the (Usub(0.7)Ysub(0.3))Osub (2+x)/YSZ interface. A current-interruption technique was used to separate overpotential and resistive potential drop. In oxygen and air the overpotential-current curves obey the Tafel law, suggesting that a charge-transfer process is rate determining. Activation energies of 120 kJ mole -1 and 165 kJ mole -1 were obtained for the cathodic reaction in oxygen and air respectively. The capacitance obtained from galvanostatic transients varied with potential, temperature, and oxygen partial pressure. The average value of n, the number of electrons involved in the overall charge-transfer reaction, was determined to be 4.01 from reversible potential measurements. The overpotential losses are small for porous electrodes at high psub(O 2 ). A mechanism for the oxygen transfer reaction has been proposed and its limitations discussed. (author)

  4. Microcracking in ceramics and acoustic emission

    One of the limitations in the use of ceramics in critical applications is due to the presence of microcracks, which may arise from differential thermal expansion and phase changes, among others. Acoustic emission signals occur when there are abrupt microdeformations in a material and thus offer a convenient means of non-destructive detection of microcracking. Examples of a study of acoustic emission from microcracking due to anisotropic thermal expansion in low thermal expansion single phase ceramics such as niobia and sodium zirconium phosphate ceramics and due to phase changes in zirconia and superconducting YBa 2 Cu 3 Osub(7-x) ceramics are presented, together with the case of lead titanate ceramics, which exhibits both a phase change (paraelectric to ferroelectric) and an anisotropic thermal expansion. The role of grain size on the extent of microcracking is illustrated in the case of niobia ceramics. Some indirect evidence of healing of microcracks on heating niobia and lead titanate ceramics is presented from the acoustic emission results. (author). 69 refs., 9 figs

  5. Results of the post-irradiation examination of a highly-rated mixed oxide fuel rod from the Mol 7B experiment

    The experiment MOL 7B was carried out in a epithermal flux in the Belgian reactor BR2. The pin examined contained fuel of initial composition (Usub(0.7)Pusub(0.3))Osub(1.98). It had been irradiated to a maximum burn-up of 13.2 at% at a maximum linear power of 568Wcm -1 . The fuel was clad with coldworked stainless steel. Electron microprobe analysis indicated that a Cr 2 O 3 type oxide was the main constituent of the grey phases in the gap. A metallic phase on the fuel surface had apparently resulted from the mechanical compaction of fragments of cladding that had been depleted in chromium by oxidation. Thus the main components of the phase were iron and nickel. Chromium loss from the inner cladding surface was significant only in the upper regions of the pin. In pin sections that were metallographically examined sigma phase and carbides of the type M 23 C 6 were present at the grain boundaries of the cladding. Cladding corrosion was not an Arrhenius function of the cladding temperature: the amount of metal lost from the inner cladding surface decreased with rise in cladding temperature above 910 K. A contributor to metal loss was the mechanical detachment of fragments of cladding which reformed as a metallic layer on the surface of the fuel. Chromium depletion and sigma phase formation at grain boundaries lowered the cohesive forces between grains which were then mechanically detached. Chromium loss from grain boundaries is mainly the results of oxidation of the cladding by the mixed oxide fuel. Data are presented to support the view that the local average O/M of the fuel determined the rate of oxidation and consequently the extent of chromium depletion. Fuel-cladding mechanical interactions were weak in the upper regions of the pin where metal loss was small
