Hot dry rock (HDR) power generation has been promoted by NEDO since 1984 at Hijiori, Okura village, Mogami-gun, Yamagata Prefecture. Hydraulic fracture tests and circulation tests have been conducted using four wells named as SKG-2, HDR-1, HDR-2 and HDR-3. Based on these test results, flow models of Hijiori shallow and deep reservoirs have been proposed. Conventional circulation tests have been analyzed only using temperature profile data. In this paper, circulation tests are analyzed by numerical simulation, to discuss individual characteristics of the shallow and deep reservoirs. Injection flow, production flow and circulation days were inputted as past circulation test data, to discuss the characteristics of geological layers, especially the permeability data, by which the features of temperature profiles in each well can be explained. As a result, it was found that the extension of permeable zone affecting the temperature in the SKG-2 well equivalent to the shallow reservoir was larger than that in the HDR-1 well. It was also found that there was a large difference in the permeability between the HDR-2a and HDR-3 wells. 5 refs., 8 figs., 2 tabs.

With regard to a fracture system in the Hijiori hot dry rock artificial reservoir, an attempt was made on an interpretation which integrates different data. Major factors that characterize development and performance of an artificial reservoir are composed of a fracture system in rocks, which acts as circulating water paths, a heat exchange face and a reservoir space. The system relates not only with crack density distribution, but also with cracks activated by water pressure fracturing, cracks generating acoustic emission (AE), and cracks working as major flow paths, all of which are characterized by having respective behaviors and roles. Characteristics are shown on AE cluster distribution, crack distribution, production zone and estimated stress fields. Mutual relationship among these elements was discussed based on the Coulomb`s theory. The most important paths are characterized by distribution of slippery cracks. Directions and appearance frequencies of the slippery cracks affect strongly directionality of the paths, which are governed by distribution of the cracks (weak face) and stress field. Among the slippery cracks, cracks that generate AE are cracks that release large energy when a slip occurs. Evaluation on slippery crack distribution is important. 7 refs., 8 figs.

This paper reports the result of a preliminary circulation test conducted in fiscal 1995 on a deep reservoir (at a depth of about 2200 m) in the Hijiori hot dry rock experimental field. One water injection well and two production wells were drilled to constitute a circulation loop, to which the circulation test was performed to investigate the flow characteristics thereof. The result revealed the following matters: total amount of injected water of 51500 m{sup 3} resulted in a total fluid recovery rate of about 40%; as a result of well stimulation given twice during the initial stage of the water injection, the continuity impedance in the vicinity of the injection well decreased largely (however, the continuity improvement upon the second attempt was considerably inferior to that from the first attempt); and increase in the water injection amount does not necessarily lead to increase in the production amount. The paper describes additionally that it is extremely difficult to interpret non-linearity between the injection and production amounts by using a model prepared previously with a main objective to analyze the Hijiori HDR circulation system. 1 ref., 9 figs., 1 tab.

This paper reports one example of flow analyses on a circulation test carried out in fiscal 1991 at the Hijiori hot dry rock experimental field (Yamagata Prefecture). A fluid circulation model was proposed to simulate an HDR circulation system for a shallow reservoir (at a depth of about 1800 m) demonstrated in the circulation test by using an electric circuit network (which expresses continuity impedance in resistance and fluid storage in capacitance). Storage capacity of the reservoir was estimated by deriving time constant of the system from data of time-based change in reservoir pressure associated with transition phenomena during the circulation test. The storage capacity was estimated separately by dividing change of storage in the reservoir by change in the reservoir pressure. To derive the storage in the reservoir, a method to calculate non-recovered flows in the circulation test was utilized. The results of evaluating the reservoir capacity in the shallow reservoir using the above two independent methods were found substantially consistent. 3 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab.

Production in geothermal reservoirs often leads to observable surface displacement. As shown in this paper, there is a direct relationship between such displacement and reservoir dynamics. This relationship is exploited in order to image fluid flow at two geothermal field sites. At the first locality, the Hijiori Hot Dry Rock (HDR) test site, 17 tilt meters record deformation associated with a 2.2 km deep injection experiment. Images of fluid migration along a ring fracture system of the collapsed Hijiori caldera are obtained. At the Okuaizu geothermal field, leveling and tilt meter data provide constraints on long- and short-term fluid movement within the reservoir. A set of 119 leveling data suggest that the north-to-northeast trending Takiyagawa fault acts as a barrier to flow. The northwesterly oriented Chinoikezawa and Sarukurazawa faults appear to channel fluid from the southeast. The tilt data from Okuaizu indicate that a fault paralleling the Takiyagawa fault zone acts as a conduit to transient flow, on a time scale of several weeks. The volume strain in a region adjacent to the injection wells reaches a maximum and then decreases with time. The transient propagation of fluid along the fault may be due to pressure build-up, resulting from the re-initiation of injection. (author)

In order to identify the possibility of a hot rock power generation system, technological R and D has been performed on structuring of a man-made hydrothermal system, fracture mapping, downhole measurement and a circulating extraction system. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 2000. With regard to the long-term circulating extraction test, a circulating heat extraction and test device was installed at the hot rock experimental field in the Hijiori area in Yamagata Prefecture, where geochemical data collection and tests including analyses thereon have begun. In reservoir bed analysis, a well module was incorporated into a reservoir bed simulator to improve the module so that comparison with the data of actual production on the ground can be performed. For the fracture mapping, AE having been observed during the long-term circulation test was analyzed, whereas it was estimated that the seismic source would not move or expanded during this period. A PTS logging has been performed during the long-term circulation test to investigate characteristics of the flow-out zone of the injection well and the production zone of the production well. In making the fracture model, an initial model was fabricated to estimate heat extraction behavior in the long-term circulation test. (NEDO)

For the purpose of using hot dry rock energy to power generation, the R and D was continued of element technology of the hot dry rock power generation. In fiscal 1997, the construction of ground facilities, etc. for long-term circulation experiment was proceeded with to make data analysis for study of the experimental results. As for preparation for the long-term circulation experiment, design/fabrication/construction of experimental facilities were commenced, and review/fabrication of the monitoring system were conducted to strengthen the monitoring network of microearthquakes. In relation to the analytical research, using models connecting reservoirs and wells, relationships were studied among the distance between injection well and production well, production flow rate, and long-term thermal extraction characteristics of reservoirs. Further, to study structures of shallow/deep reservoirs at the Hijiori hot dry rock experimental field, re-determined were mechanism solutions of AE in deep hydraulic fracturing experiments, three well circulation tests, and preliminary circulation tests, and at the same time stress fields were studied. Fracture models were made and the simulation program was revised. 18 refs., 82 figs.

Japan is one of the most distinguished volcanic country in the world and about 8% of the active volcanos of the world are distributed in Japan. This kind of a large quantity and natural energy resource near us are used as hot springs in the whole country and as for electricity in 10 geothermal power stations. In future, if this enormous underground geothermal energy could be utilized safely and economically by using new power generation system like hot dry rock geothermal power generation (HDR), it may contribute a little to the 21st century`s energy problem of Japan. Central Research Inst. of Electric Power Industry has installed `Okachi HDR testing ground` in Okachi-machi of Akita Ken, and is carrying out experiments since 1989. Hot dry rock geothermal power generation is a method in which water is injected to the hot dry rock and the thermal energy is recovered that the natural rock bed is used as a boiler. However, development of many new technologies is necessary to bring this system in practical use. 9 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.

As a result, WHC removed nine of the previous in-situ tested A325 suspect bolts and contracted with Koon-Hall Testing Corporation to perform hardness and tensile testing and chemical composition analysis of the removed bolts. WHC also contracted with ADVENT Engineering, Inc., to perform an evaluation of the Koon-Hall test results and to respond to the concerns identified in the DOE RL surveillance. The Koon-Hall Laboratory test results and the assessments strongly support the conclusion that the suspect bolts are indeed the equivalent of A325 high-strength, Type-1 bolts and have been properly heat-treated

With an objective to develop geothermal resources, research and development has been performed on the production technologies for the deep-seated geothermal resources, such as pressure, temperature, flow speed and density (PTSD) logging technologies. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1999. In the actual well test on the developed D-probe, it was verified that the probe operates normally under high temperature environment (342 degrees C) which exceeds the measurement limit of conductive cables (315 degrees C). In developing the PTC monitoring technology, the downhole sampler was improved, and a test was performed in the actual hole in the Hijiori area in Yamagata Prefecture. As a result, collection of hot water of about 900 mL has become possible. In developing the high-temperature tracer monitoring technology, simulation was performed keeping in mind charging the tracer into the Hijiori geothermal area, whereas specifications for charging and collecting the tracer were determined. In developing the scale monitoring technology, experiments were carried out on the fluid systems under deep geothermal conditions by using scale forming devices, by which it was indicated that silica is the important scale constituent. R. Ratcliff and G. McKoon (1995, 1996, 1997; R. Ratcliff, D. Allbritton, & G. McKoon, 1997) have argued that repetition priming effects are solely due to bias. They showed that prior study of the target resulted in a benefit in a later implicit memory task. However, prior study of a stimulus similar to the target resulted in a cost. The present study, using a 2-alternative forced-choice procedure, investigated the effect of prior study in an unbiased condition: Both alternatives were studied prior to their presentation in an implicit memory task. Contrary to a pure bias interpretation of priming, consistent evidence was obtained in 3 implicit memory tasks (word fragment completion, auditory word identification, and picture identification) that performance was better when both alternatives were studied than when neither alternative was studied. These results show that prior study results in enhanced discriminability, not only bias.

Full Text Available Size-related changes in body condition of free-ranging male calves of semi-domesticated reindeer were studied in northern Finland from October 1983 to February 1984. In October-November, back fat depth or muscle fat percent correlated positively with the body size (=back length. In January, the highest means especially for muscle fat percent were found among medium-sized calves. Carcass weight and weight/back length ratio correlated positively with size, excluding February sample, where correlation for carcass weight was non-significant and for weight/back length ratio negative. Weight in the autumn correlated negatively with weight in February. Therefore, normalizing selection for body size (working against small and large phenotypes is expected to occur in late winter. Small calves may be at greater mortality risk because of lower initial body reserves. Large calves commonly disperse during the rutting season and they may suffer most from increased food competition later in winter. Using of medium-sized calves for breeding might be the safest policy on ranges characterized by short food supply and difficult snow conditions.Koon vaikutus poron urosvasojen talviseen kuntoon.Abstract in Finnish / Tiivistelmä: Koon vaikutusta vapaana laiduntavien poron urosvasojen kuntoon tutkittiin Pohjois-Suomessa loka-helmikuussa talvella 1983-84. This study used the visual world eye-tracking method to investigate activation of general world knowledge related to gender-stereotypical role names in online spoken language comprehension in Finnish. The results showed that listeners activated gender stereotypes elaboratively in story contexts where this information was not needed to build coherence. Furthermore, listeners made additional inferences based on gender stereotypes to revise an already established coherence relation. Both results are consistent with mental models theory (e.g., Garnham, 2001). They are harder to explain by the minimalist account (McKoon & Ratcliff, 1992) which suggests that people limit inferences to those needed to establish coherence in discourse.

The lexical-decision task is among the most commonly used paradigms in psycholinguistics. In both the signal-detection theory and Diffusion Decision Model (DDM; Ratcliff, Gomez, & McKoon, Psychological Review, 111, 159-182, 2004) frameworks, lexical-decisions are based on a continuous source of word-likeness evidence for both words and non-words. The Retrieving Effectively from Memory model of Lexical-Decision (REM-LD; Wagenmakers et al., Cognitive Psychology, 48(3), 332-367, 2004) provides a comprehensive explanation of lexical-decision data and makes the prediction that word-likeness evidence is more variable for words than non-words and that higher frequency words are more variable than lower frequency words. To test these predictions, we analyzed five lexical-decision data sets with the DDM. For all data sets, drift-rate variability changed across word frequency and non-word conditions. For the most part, REM-LD's predictions about the ordering of evidence variability across stimuli in the lexical-decision task were confirmed.

Physical properties of 61 rock sample collected from 22 outcrops of the Miyamori ultramafic complex in the Kitakami Mountains are reported in this paper. Their density, P-wave velocity, magnetic susceptibility, Curie temperature, and natural remanent magnetization were newly measured and discussed based on the petrographic data. The western part of the Miyamori ultramafic complex was intruded by an early Cretaceous granite, which thermally affected one-third of this complex. The characteristics of data are summarized as follows. Rock density varies from 2.56 to 3.15 g/cm{sup 3} with an average of 2.76 g/cm{sup 3} (gabroic rocks are excluded). P-wave velocity varies from 4.26 to 6.76 km/s with an average of 5.83 km/s. Magnetic susceptibility varies from 1.2 to 14.4 times 10{sup -3} (cgsemu) and the Konigsberger ratio varies widely from 0.3 to 4.9, with ratio less than 1.1 for most of the strongly metamorphosd rocks. Curie temperature is approximately 578degC in 65 percent of the rock samples, indicating the presence of magnetite, whereas many strongly metamorphosed rocks have two Curie temperatures for hematite, magnetite and titanomagnetite. One sample have three Curie temperatures for hematite, magnetite and titanomagnetite. The declination of natural remanent magnetization of the rocks are mostly plotted in the northwest and all the inclinations plot downward. The average of inclination and declination are 50degN and 35degW, respectively. In preliminary palaeomagnetic observations by AC demagnetizations, the mean direction of 18 outcrops show the results similar to that of natural remanent magnetization (51degN,39degW). Significant difference was not recognized between the strongly metamorphosed and the less metamorphosed rocks. It is evident that the decreasing tendency of rock density and P-wave velocity with increasing magnetic susceptibility was caused by serpentinization. But it is not clear when serpentinization occur

The paper reported the results of the development of the fracture hydraulic method. As to the geothermal well hydraulic test method, the following were studied. Relating to the pressure transient test method, the detailed design of a system was conducted on a prototype hydraulic test system through the manufacture of element parts and feed back control mechanism and experiments to evaluate performance/operation characteristics of fields. Concerning the tiltmeter use measurement method, the field experiment by tiltmeter measurement was carried out in the Hijiori area where existing data and the wells used exist. With respect to the two-phase flow rate measuring method, by a combination of the existing vortex flow meter, vapor quality meter and tracer method, conducted were a field experiment on comparison/calibration of the existing flow meter and tracer method and a numerical simulation of change in vapor liquid in association with temperature/pressure changes in two-phase flow pipe, and the semi-quantitative calibration method was studied. About the water permeable logging method, study was made on the following items. In regard to the hydrophone VSP method, data analysis of the method was conducted. As to the development of individual feed zone flow meter measuring device, the evaluation was conducted of accuracy of Doppler shift rates for flow rate, pressure, flow velocity, well diameter and change in concentration and characteristics of acoustic unit. As a result, the flow rate was unable to be detected with satisfactory accuracy. (NEDO)

  17. The curator/patron: Foundations and contemporary art

Full Text Available This article addresses the role of private foundations in commissioning site-specific ephemeral art works: contemporary art projects of a temporary nature that are realised outside of public institutions. Though small in number, I argue that the private individuals creating and managing private foundations of this nature demonstrate a new form of patronage, creating in the process a new role of ‘curator/patron’. Equally, this process of realisation reflects the changing needs of contemporary art practice. Work of this scale and ambition would increasingly not be possible without the vision, perseverance and funding of these kinds of foundation. In Australia, this trend is demonstrated by two foundations: Kaldor Art Projects, and their commissioning of works by artists such as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Gilbert & George and Jeff Koons; and the more recently formed Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, whose first project was with Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. In this article, these examples are placed within the broader international context of foundation models such as Artangel, UK, Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, Milan, and The Public Art Fund, New York.

Research on shallow processing suggests that readers sometimes encode only a superficial representation of a text and fail to make use of all available information. Greene, McKoon, and Ratcliff (1992) extended this work to pronouns, finding evidence that readers sometimes fail to automatically identify referents even when these are unambiguous. In this paper we revisit those findings. In 11 recognition probe, priming, and self-report experiments, we manipulated Greene et al.'s stories to discover under what circumstances a pronoun's referent is automatically understood. We lengthened the stories from 4 to 8 lines. This simple manipulation led to automatic and correct resolution, which we attribute to readers' increased engagement with the stories. We found evidence of resolution even when the additional text did not mention the pronoun's referent. In addition, our results suggest that the pronoun temporarily boosts the referent's accessibility, an advantage that disappears by the end of the next sentence. Finally, we present evidence from memory experiments that supports complete pronoun resolution for the longer but not the shorter stories.

Technical innovation in the arts creates new opportunities for perceptual shifts that lead to lasting achievements. One of the most important events took place in the 15th century not far from CERN on the other side of the Alps in Venice. Titian, in one life time, exploited these new material developments to expand the range of expression like no other artist of his generation. Titian was able to harness these new innovations to emerge as the supreme competitor and hustler, a notion that seems very much a part of the modern promotion of art as exemplified by Warhol , Jeff Koons and Damian Hirst. The language of science and technology has created social networks, changed the mediums and the subject of fine art. Fast forward to CERN 2012, the most expensive experiment in the history of science. The knowledge of dark matter will either help confirm, or not, the Standard Model. Eye movements of listeners were monitored to investigate how gender information and accessibility influence the initial processes of pronoun interpretation. Previous studies on this issue have produced mixed results, and several studies have concluded that gender cues are not automatically used during the early processes of pronoun interpretation (e.g. Garnham, A., Oakhill, J. & Cruttenden, H. (1992). The role of implicit causality and gender cue in the interpretation of pronouns. Language and Cognitive Processes, 73 (4), 231-255; Greene, S. B., McKoon, G. & Ratcliff, R. (1992). Pronoun resolution and discourse models. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 182, 266-283). In the two experiments presented here, participants viewed a picture with two familiar cartoon characters of either same or different gender. They listened to a text describing the picture, in which a pronoun referred to either the first, more accessible, character, or the second. (For example, Donald is bringing some mail to ¿Mickey/Minnie¿ while a violent storm is beginning. He's carrying an umbrellaellipsis.) The results of both experiments show rapid use of both gender and accessibility at approximately 200 ms after the pronoun offset.

  3. Searching for Judy: How small mysteries affect narrative processes and memory

    Science.gov (United States)

    2010-01-01

Current theories of text processing say little about how author’s narrative choices, including the introduction of small mysteries, can affect readers’ narrative experiences. Gerrig, Love, and McKoon (2009) provided evidence that one type of small mystery—a character introduced without information linking him or her to the story—affects readers’ moment-by-moment processing. For that project, participants read stories that introduced characters by proper name alone (e.g., Judy) or with information connecting the character to the rest of the story (e.g., our principal Judy). In an on-line recognition probe task, responses to the character’s name three lines after his or her introduction were faster when the character had not been introduced with connecting information, suggesting that the character remained accessible awaiting resolution. In the four experiments in this paper, we extended our theoretical analysis of small mysteries. In Experiments 1 and 2, we found evidence that trait information (e.g., daredevil Judy) is not sufficient to connect a character to a text. In Experiments 3 and 4, we provide evidence that the moment-by-moment processing effects of such small mysteries also affect readers’ memory for the stories. We interpret the results in terms of Kintsch’s Construction-Integration model (1988) of discourse processing. PMID:20438273

This R and D program is aimed at optimization of superconductors for improved levitation force of the superconducting magnetic bearings which support a 10 MWh power storage system by high-temperature superconducting flywheel (FW), to clarify possibility of sizing up the FW body and R and D themes for the commercialization. The processes are screened to simultaneously solve the conflicting targets of sizing up the sample of the Y-based bulk superconducting material and improved crystal orientation of the whole bearing, leading to selection of multi-seeding. The sample made on a trial basis improves levitation force by approximately 30%. It is considered that the OCMG-processed rare-earth-based superconducting material can generate very strong electromagnetic force, when combined with a permanent magnet. The Ag-doped Sm-based bulk material shows a reduced creep-caused loss of loading force, and a lower loss of Jc resulting from increased temperature than the Y-based one, decreasing AC loss and controlling temperature rise. The running characteristics and mechanical strength of the FW, and causes for temporal changes are investigated, in order to evaluate the superconducting material characteristics. (NEDO)

  5. Deep subduction of hot young oceanic slab required by the Syros eclogites

The Cycladic islands of Syros and Siphnos, Aegean Sea, Greece, represent subducted IAT and BABB remnants of the Neotethyan Pindos Ocean. Garnet porphyroblasts (Ø=1mm) in a glaucophane-zoisite eclogite from Kini locality on Syros are compositionally zoned and display a unique prograde heating path from a high-pressure greenschist-facies core with high XSps and low Mg# via a blueschist-facies mantle with moderate XSps and Mg# to an eclogite-facies rim with low XSps and high Mg#. The outermost 35 μm of the garnet rims show flat XSps with rapidly increasing outwards Mg#. Na-Act-Chl-Ph rimmed by Gln mark the greenschist-blueschist facies transition, whereas Pg rimmed by Omp and the incoming of Rt at the expense of Ttn signify the blueschist-eclogite facies transition. Raman barometry of quartz inclusions in the eclogitic garnet rims coupled with elastic modelling of the garnet host [1], and Zr-in-Rt and Grt-Cpx-Ph thermobarometry revealed near-UHP P-T conditions of the order of 2.6 GPa/660°C (maximum residual pressure was 0.8-0.9GPa). By contrast, the greenschist-blueschist transition lies at ~0.75 GPa/355°C. This pressure is in excellent agreement with the position of the albite = jadeite + quartz boundary calculated at 350°C using the observed omphacite composition corrected for jadeite activity (Koons & Thompson, 1985) [2]. As a result, Cpx inclusions in garnet core signify the early entrance of garnet in the subduction zone history of the slab. Furthermore, the early growth of garnet (in lower pressures) observed in eclogites from Syros lies in great agreement with published slab-geotherms that indicate hot subduction and show a precocious garnet growth (Baxter and Caddick, 2013) [3]. The complete absence of lawsonite and the great abundance of zoisite crystals, based on the stability fields of both minerals (Poli et al., 2009) [4], further constrain the P-T trajectory of the slab. Our new P-T estimates match published T distributions on the slab surface

The environmental conditions for which the digging techniques are to be developed have been set at 3,000 to 5,000 m as depth, 400 degrees C as temperature and 500 kg/cm{sup 2} as pressure. The environmental temperature was set at 250 degrees C as the first phase in the previous year. In this year, the temperature level is increased to 400 degrees C for the feasibility study on technological development. For development of the high-temperature bed digging apparatuses, masts, sub-structures, drawworks, slurry pumps, and pipe addition handling are studied as the problems involved in the rotary table method. Also studied are the related themes, e.g., drill pipes, drill collars, casing pipes, slurry, cementing and instruments to be installed in geothermal wells. For development of the bits, various problems to be solved are studied, including slurry circulation systems, bit diameter and speed of rotation, and bit configurations as those involved in the digging systems; heat-resistant materials, bit tooth forms, hardening of the edges, bearing configurations and cooling mechanisms as those involved in the bit structures; and optimum service conditions and selective use standards for roller cutter and solid bits. Other items studied include structures of the apparatuses for geothermal well mouth, and wear of digging tools for the air drilling method. (NEDO)

  7. Keats et de Kooning : Pour un romantisme expressionniste abstrait ou la mise en image de l’épitaphe ‘Here lies one whose name was writ in water’: Keats and de Kooning or the abstract expressionist vision of a Romantic epitaph

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Caroline Bertonèche

    2007-01-01

Full Text Available The article explores the comparative dialectic between John Keats’s choice of a visual epitaph, theatrically staged as a fluid, evanescent metaphor of poetic identity in relation to Romantic writing, and Willem de Kooning’s late awareness and expressionist interpretation of it. The modernity of Keats’s epitaphic imagery seemed to have been an uncanny preamble to de Kooning’s gestural art or pictorial pantomimes on the themes of impermanence and forgetfulness, memory and death. Close in many other ways, despite chronological and geographical differences, the two inspired artists meet around their creative intermingling of the picturesque and the poetic: the rhythmic liquidity, the verse schemes, the chiaroscuros, the ‘dripping’ technique, the ‘erasures’, the fading colours… Keats’s strangely melancholic but also deeply ironic and contrasted lyricism meets de Kooning’s mixed style of painting, torn as it is between the realms of tradition and novelty, of figurative and abstract art. A writer and a reader, an indolent poet and an ‘action painter’, they are, above all, or aspire to be, especially with regard to this mysterious conception and meaningful depiction of an epitaph, immortal artists as well as enlightened visionaries.

This paper reports research achievements on the following items: (1) a roller cutter bit, (2) solid bit and air friction bit, and (3) bit materials. In Item 1, fabrication and test were performed on a roller cutter bit on which studies were made for use, heat treatment, and manufacturing method of improved heat resistant steels. Effects were obtained in tip retention force when high-temperature rocks are drilled. Research and development was made on construction of a bearing as a friction type bit, in which dry bearing pressed in with a solid lubricating agent was inserted into an outer race. In Item 2, an indoor drilling test was carried out on a solid bit using two-layered ultra hard tip. A durability test on an air friction bit bearing recognized no wear on a check after operation of about 40 hours under a load of 3 tons and at a rotation speed of 80 rpm. Thus, the bearing was considered sufficiently reliable from the aspect of durability. In mud water drilling in the field, some wear was observed in the thrust direction. In Item 3, studies were performed on heat and corrosion resistant tip materials, bit materials using heat resistant alloys, improvement in bearing materials, strengthening of inside of a cutter made of metallurgically sintered powder, provision of heat resistance onto bit materials, indoor cutting tests, and seals for bits. Which cognitive processes are reflected by the N400 in ERPs is still controversial. Various recent articles (Lau et al., 2008; Brouwer et al., 2012) have revived the idea that only lexical pre-activation processes (such as automatic spreading activation, ASA) are strongly supported, while post-lexical integrative processes are not. Challenging this view, the present ERP study replicates a behavioral study by McKoon and Ratcliff (1995) who demonstrated that a prime-target pair such as finger - hand shows stronger priming when a majority of other pairs in the list share the analogous semantic relationship (here: part-whole), even at short stimulus onset asynchronies (250ms). We created lists with four different types of semantic relationship (synonyms, part-whole, category-member, and opposites) and compared priming for pairs in a consistent list with those in an inconsistent list as well as unrelated items. Highly significant N400 reductions were found for both relatedness priming (unrelated vs. inconsistent) and relational priming (inconsistent vs. consistent). These data are taken as strong evidence that N400 priming effects are not exclusively carried by ASA-like mechanisms during lexical retrieval but also include post-lexical integration in working memory. We link the present findings to a neurocomputational model for relational reasoning (Knowlton et al., 2012) and to recent discussions of context-dependent conceptual activations (Yee and Thompson-Schill, 2016). The Tertiary limestone bodies represented by Megami Hill and Ogami Hill are distributed in the Kakegawa district in the central portion of Shizuoka Prefecture, these limestone bodies are those originated from coral reefs and are contained in the Megami formation composed of sandstone, mudstone and tuff. However, concerning the limestone bodies of the Megami formation, there are, inter alia, the opinion that they are coral reef sediments on the spot and the opinion that they are foreign rocks, but neither has any firm concrete supporting evidence. In this paper, the sedimentation ages and the sedimentary locations of limestone and sandstone {center dot} mudstone composing the Megami formation were classified and the process, through which limestone was transformed up to its state now observed, was studied. The above study was done by a detailed survey of local rock facies, comparison of age of each rock facies through detection of reference fossils and other measures. A part of the conclusion is shown below: The limestone bodies of the Megami formation is discontinuous with the surrounding sandstone {center dot} mudstone and their strike dip is not harmonious. These limestone bodies are allochthonous rock blocks which collapsed after their sedimentation and mixed with the deep sea sediments (sandstone and mudstone). 37 refs., 4 figs., 4 tabs.

Discussions were given on feasibility of a technology to drill efficiently a high-temperature bed (350 degrees C and 400 kg/cm{sup 2}) to 3 to 5 km. This paper summarizes the bit items for development (bearings, cutters, blade tips, sealing materials, a tip retaining method and structures). The roller cutter bit had the retaining power of the mother cutter material strengthened by using improved carbonized steel and heat treatment. A bit bearing using heat resistant material showed a life of 40 hours or longer at 350 degrees C. The solid bit using a two-layered ultra hard blade tip achieved a drilling rate of 0.84 m/h without any breakage. Studies were also advanced on the air friction drilling method. This paper also dwelled on heat and corrosion resistant blade tips, materials, enhancement of heat resistance in powder sintered cutters, and studies on the bit sealing. In addition to discussions on the percussion drilling as a new drilling method, discussions were given on slanted drilling, air drilling and multi-leg drilling. The paper summarizes these discussions together with development problems to be solved in the future. Research and development works were carried out also on an explosion preventing device, a roll packer, and a rotating head prevent device. (NEDO)

In this study, the improved fluxoid quantum dynamics method which applied the handling of the lattice in the lattice gas automaton method into the fluxoid quantum dynamics was developed. The saving of a memory capacity and the speedup of the calculation were carried out. Using a BSCCO single crystal which introduced a pinning center by the heavy ion irradiation as an analysis object, the validity of this technique was shown by the comparison with the experimental result. By the improved fluxoid quantum dynamics method, the space was made discrete by the triangular lattice in the two-dimensional system. The fluxoid quantum exists only on the lattice point, and received the force from the fluxoid quantum, the Meissner magnetic field and the pinning center in the circumference, and then moved to the 6 neighboring lattice points. Since the pattern of the positional relation of the fluxoid quantum was limited by the use of triangular lattice, the high-speed computation became possible by storing the interaction force into a database. The dependence for the radiation value of the torque in the axial type super-conductive magnet bearings was analyzed, and the possibility of the rotational loss control by the heavy ion irradiation was shown. We report new photometric observations of the transiting exoplanetary system HAT-P-20, obtained using CCD cameras at Yunnan Observatories and Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre, China, from 2010 to 2013, and Observatori Ca l’Ou, Sant Marti Sesgueioles, Spain, from 2013 to 2015. The observed data are corrected for systematic errors according to the coarse de-correlation and SYSREM algorithms, so as to enhance the signal of the transit events. In order to consistently model the star spots and transits of this exoplanetary system, we develop a highly efficient tool STMT based on the analytic models of Mandel and Agol and Montalto et al. The physical parameters of HAT-P-20 are refined by homogeneously analyzing our new data, the radial velocity data, and the earlier photometric data in the literature with the Markov chain Monte Carlo technique. New radii and masses of both host star and planet are larger than those in the discovery paper due to the discrepancy of the radius among K-dwarfs between predicted values by standard stellar models and empirical calibration from observations. Through the analysis of all available mid-transit times calculated with the normal model and spotted model, we conclude that the periodic transit timing variations in these transit events revealed by employing the normal model are probably induced by spot crossing events. From the analysis of the distribution of occulted spots by HAT-P-20b, we constrain the misaligned architecture between the planetary orbit and the spin of the host star.

In this study, in a magnetic levitation system using pinning force of high temperature superconductors, for a propose of magnification of the stable contactless gap length and exclusion of mass regulation of a floater, a magnetic levitation model was improved. That is, the tangential component of an attractive force between a high temperature superconductor where magnetic flux was pinned and magnetic material is used for levitation and stable force in up and down directions, and restoring force generated due to pinned flux gathering was used for horizontal stabilization. For a floater made by using this principle, weight addition was necessary for letting the center of gravity down, however self-weight regulation of a floater is originally unnecessary. Thus, a magnetic levitation apparatus can be made without self-weight regulation of suspension and having a wide stable gap by using this levitation method. Since the floater was constructed under two rails, there are good points on easily dealing with the safety countermeasure in cases of which levitation would reduce or disappear. 4 refs., 7 figs.

Full Text Available A comparison between the axon terminals of octopaminergic efferent dorsal or ventral unpaired median neurons in either desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria or fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster across skeletal muscles reveals many similarities. In both species the octopaminergic axon forms beaded fibers where the boutons or varicosities form type II terminals in contrast to the neuromuscular junction (NMJ or type I terminals. These type II terminals are immunopositive for both tyramine and octopamine and, in contrast to the type I terminals, which possess clear synaptic vesicles, only contain dense core vesicles. These dense core vesicles contain octopamine as shown by immunogold methods. With respect to the cytomatrix and active zone peptides the type II terminals exhibit active zone-like accumulations of the scaffold protein Bruchpilot (BRP only sparsely in contrast to the many accumulations of BRP identifying active zones of NMJ type I terminals. In the fruit fly larva marked dynamic changes of octopaminergic fibers have been reported after short starvation which not only affects the formation of new branches (“synaptopods” but also affects the type I terminals or NMJs via octopamine-signaling (Koon et al., 2011. Our starvation experiments of Drosophila-larvae revealed a time-dependency of the formation of additional branches. Whereas after 2 h of starvation we find a decrease in “synaptopods”, the increase is significant after 6 h of starvation. In addition, we provide evidence that the release of octopamine from dendritic and/or axonal type II terminals uses a similar synaptic machinery to glutamate release from type I terminals of excitatory motor neurons. Indeed, blocking this canonical synaptic release machinery via RNAi induced downregulation of BRP in neurons with type II terminals leads to flight performance deficits similar to those observed for octopamine mutants or flies lacking this class of neurons (Brembs et al., 2007.

Nostalgic phenomenon promoted by modernity, globalization and urbanization has attracted broad attention from academic circle and has become an important issue in the research at home and abroad,. The nostalgic consumption, which covers basic necessities of life and spiritual culture, is popular all over the world. As a synthesis during the nostalgic consuming process, the special consuming space and its construction are worth more discussion. This paper takes Tai Ping Koon (Taipingguan) Western Food Restaurant in Guangzhou, which has been famous for hundred years, as a case to reveal the process of the construction of nostalgia consuming place. We conducted the study of the relation between the space and the consumers through analyzing the process of constructing the physical space, place making and emotional space, and adopted the method of combining participant observation and semi-structured interview. We also collected the information from the related media as the data source. The paper analyses the relationship between nostalgia space and consumers through the construction of physical space and emotional space. It is considered that the owner of Tai Ping Koon Restaurant should construct the place on collective memories, which could promote the reproduction of the sense of place by selecting external location and internal material space constructing. From experiencing the vision, touch, taste, smell and hearing, consumers’ memories and emotional experience for “text”, “image”, “symbol” could be produced. Meanwhile, consumers as positive subjects in constructing nostalgic place would promote sustainable construction of nostalgia consuming place in place attachment and place identity through their own emotional experience and consuming behavior, and would have sense of belonging and place identity in such place. Finally, nostalgic consumption space would continue to be all the rage, the symbol consumption, landscape transplantation, the tourist

The Ti-14Al-21Nb alloy called Super {alpha}{sub 2} is an alloy which has been improved of plastic transformation ability by adding Nb into Ti3Al with high specific strength, and is used for member materials in aircraft engines. In order to identify its oxidation characteristics, this paper discusses the oxidation characteristics under purified oxygen and atmospheric pressure in temperatures ranging from 1000 K to 1300 K. The experiment made a button-formed ingot with a diameter of 50 mm and a thickness of about 10 mm by melting and thermal refining, and used a thermobalance. Main conclusion thus obtained may be summarized as follows: the amount of increase due to oxidation after 100 ks oxidation at 1000 K is very small; oxidation between 1100 K and 1200 K follows nearly the parabolic rate laws; the scale consisted mainly of rutile, but a thin alumina concentration layer is formed; Nb is concentrated in the rutile-alumina mixed layer, and local fracture and regeneration are repeated at temperatures higher than 1300 K. 21 refs., 8 figs., 2 tabs.

The high-temperature air combustion technology recently developed greatly advances combustion technology. The technology, when applied to the other areas, may expand its applicable areas and contribute to environmental preservation, e.g., abatement of CO2 emissions. This is the motivation for promotion of this project. The combustion technology, developed by improving functions of industrial furnaces, cannot be directly applied to the other combustion heaters. This project is aimed at extraction of the problems involved, finding out the solutions, and thereby smoothly transferring the technology to commercialization. This project covers boilers firing finely pulverized coal, waste incineration processes and high-temperature chemical reaction processes, to which the new technology is applied. It is also aimed at establishment of advanced combustion control basic technology, required when the high-temperature air combustion technology is applied to these processes. In addition to application R and D efforts for each area, the basic phenomena characteristic of each combustion heater type are elucidated using microgravity and the like, to support the application R and D efforts from the basic side. This project also surveys reduction of environmental pollutants, e.g., NOx and dioxins. This report presents the results obtained in the first year. (NEDO)

In the study, data collection, arrangement and comparison were made of various separation technologies such as the membrane method, absorption method, adsorption method, and cryogenic separation method. With the LNG-fired power generation as an example, the adaptable environment and effectivity were made clear by making models by a process simulator, ASPEN PLUS. Moreover, using this simulator, effects of replacing the conventional steam reforming of hydrocarbon with the CO2 reforming were made clear with the methanol synthesis as an example. As to the rock fixation treatment of high temperature CO2, collection/arrangement were made of the data on the fixation treatment of the CO2 separated at high temperature into basic rocks such as peridotite and serpentinite in order to clarify the adaptable environment and effectivity of the treatment. Besides, a potentiality of the fixation to concrete waste was made clear. 57 refs., 57 figs., 93 tabs.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts can promote the proliferation of colon cancer cells and growth of colon cancer tumors. Methods: We examined the role of cathelicidin in the development of colon cancer, using subcutaneous human HT-29 colon-cancer-cell-derived tumor model in nude mice and azoxymethane- and dextran sulfate-mediated colon cancer model in C57BL/6 mice. We also determined the indirect antitumoral mechanism of cathelicidin via the inhibition of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT of colon cancer cells and fibroblast-supported colon cancer cell proliferation. High-temperature properties of glass melts, e.g., density, volume expansion coefficient, surface tension, viscosity, specific heat, thermal and electrical conductivity, redox equilibrium and gas solubility, are basic factors that must be considered in high quality glass melting technology and computer simulation of the glass tank furnace. The structure of the glass melts is also important for understanding these properties. This R and D program is aimed at proposing the international standards for the methods of measuring these high-temperature properties of the melts. The 1988 efforts are directed to the measuring technologies for density, volume expansion coefficient, surface tension, viscosity, specific heat, thermal and electrical conductivity, redox equilibrium, gas solubility and melt structures of soda-lime-silica glass melts. The R and D for measuring methods for high-temperature melts through international cooperation and establishment of the international standards for these methods are proposed in the joint CGR/HVG/TNO/GPF conference, which provides the arena for information exchange by glass manufacturers. With an objective to select a promising process by comparing application environments and effectiveness of a high-temperature carbon dioxide separation, recovery and re-utilization technology with other methods, investigations were performed on reducible amount of carbon dioxide discharge by using material balance and system introduction. A large number of chemical and physical technologies are being developed for the separation and refining methods. This paper discusses the technologies for their application to iron and steel making, oil refining, and petrochemical industries, the so-called heavy and large product industries. As a possibility of utilizing the high-temperature separated CO2 in iron and steel making, an investigation was given on the direct iron ore smelting reduction process. It would be unreasonable to use CO2 in oil refining as a substitute to air to regenerate a catalytic decomposition and reformation catalyst because of decline in the catalytic activity. A discussion was given on a case to replace steam with CO2 in steam reformation and pyrolysis of hydrocarbons. The discussion requires the objective to be focused on such items as C/H ratio at a reformer outlet and relationship of balance in decomposition products. The C1 chemical and others were reviewed to search possibilities for their use as raw materials of chemicals used in chemical industries. Possibilities were discussed to fix high-temperature CO2 into peridotite and serpentine. 42 refs., 32 figs., 11 tabs.

Study was made on a simulation program and precise measurement of thermal properties for precision casting of heat-resistant alloy members. Study was also made on Al and Zn alloys and their welding for production and evaluation technologies of new metal textures by supercooling solidification. Some issues for strongly desired improvement of a simulation program for precision casting were clarified. In addition, since thermal property data of practical heat-resistant polyalloy members are poor, data and measurement method for precision casting were clarified. In the meantime, a grasp of levitation and guide characteristics is necessary for the case in which this levitation system is applied to the simple individual transportation system, and the measurement of the levitation characteristics is indispensable for the reason. In the conventional research, the measurement of the levitation characteristics has not been very much made. There was due to be no technique which measured kinetic characteristics of noncontacting surfacing and running travel body. In this study, measuring method for measuring these levitation characteristics was devised, and it was applied to actual measurement by the production of the model test equipment. The 1998 plan is such that the functions and usages other than the load leveling are put in order for such equipment, and that the effect/adaptability in the case of the introduction into the power system is evaluated by means of simulation and literature studies. The high-temperature superconducting flywheel power storage equipment may be used for such purposes as energy adjustment for a short time, system voltage adjustment and emergency power source, other than the load leveling, on the basis of the characteristics that enable high speed control of active/reactive power and storage/release of energy. Enumerated, as the effects obtainable in introducing these uses into the power system, are enhancement in system stability, improvement in voltage stability, improvement in instantaneous voltage drop, maintenance of system frequency, compensation of fluctuating load, countermeasures against power outrage, and output leveling of intermittent power sources, and these effects were examined. Element technology research was performed on 'rotation control' aimed at practical application of a 10-MW class high-temperature superconducting flywheel power storage system. As part of the research, researches were carried out on small-size and middle-size models, low-loss control type magnetic bearing, and large-size models. For the small-size model, as a result of performing performance tests on the protective bearing by using a testing machine, it was revealed that the model is free of problems in the test for up to 5000 rpm. For the middle-size model, fabrication and installation were completed on a middle-size rotation control testing equipment having CFRP-made flywheel with a diameter of 1 m. In the control type bearing, as a result of adopting a homo-polar type magnetic pole, the rotation loss was reduced to about 1/5 of that of a hetero-polar type. The amount is about 75 W (12000 rpm) when the bias current is 1.5 A. Concept design was implemented on a 2-MWh flywheel bearing system supported with a high-temperature superconducting magnetic bearing as a full-size flywheel. The CFRP-made flywheel has a diameter of 4 m, and a circumferential velocity of 1200 m. (NEDO)

It is necessary to establish the techniques for digging bedrocks under elevated temperature and pressure for development and utilization of geothermal energy. This project is aimed at development of heat- and wear-resistant bit cutters, which have efficient tooth edge forms and arrangements. Another factor that determines bit serviceability is the bearing built in a cutter, and this project is also aimed at development of long-serviceable bit bearings by improving their resistance to heat. Four types of bits were developed, on a trial basis, and tested (size: 8.625 inches, two types of tooth forms, different shapes and arrangements of insert tips). They were tested for, e.g., their excavation rate, under the conditions of 5 tons as load and 100 rpm. It is found that their excavation rate vary with load, speed of rotation, tooth height and tooth form. Excavation torque increases in almost proportion to load. The sliding bearings of silver and its alloy were tested, to confirm the effects of silver. It is necessary to conduct the field tests in an actual geothermal area of high rock temperature and the ground tests with test machines to dig heated rocks in and after FY 1975, for overall evaluation of the bits developed. Efforts are put into the study of direct iron making for use in a closed system where heat energy from a multi-purpose high-temperature gas furnace expected to be developed in the near future will be utilized for iron making. The researches, carried out for the establishment of technologies necessary for designing, building, and operating a pilot plant dimensionally suitable for connection to a 50MWt multi-purpose high-temperature gas furnace, cover the plant total system, a high-temperature heat exchanger, ultrahigh-temperature alloys, high-temperature insulating materials, a reduced gas generating unit, and a reduced iron making unit. When the effort is evaluated as a whole, it is found that the newly developed system is effective in preventing pollution, emitting but 0.1Nm{sup 3} of SOx per 1 ton of crude iron against the 0.4-0.9Nm{sup 3} emitted by a blast furnace/converter iron making mill. It is also found effective in reducing fossil fuel dependence and in enhancing energy source diversification. When it comes to energy conversion efficiency, furthermore, it is shown that the new system achieves a rate of 60% or more while only approximately 30% is attained by light water reactor power generation and approximately 40% by a high-temperature gas furnace. Described herein is development of direct steel-making using high-temperature reducing gas. A light hydrocarbon fraction (boiling point: 230 degrees C or lower), produced by steam cracking of vacuum residua, is reformed into a reducing gas in the presence of steam, using heat to be supplied by a nuclear plant which produces high-temperature gases for various purposes. This reducing gas is then supplied to a plant for producing reduced iron. This project has established basic techniques for designing, constructing and operating a direct steel-making pilot plant, to be connected to a 50 MWt high-temperature gas test furnace. The closed iron-making system and greatly reduced SOx emissions to several fractions of the current level are some of the expected effects. The environmental impacts of the high-temperature gas furnace will be on a level with those associated with a light-water reactor. Cracking and gasification of vacuum residua, which has found limited purposes so far, should expand its applicable areas and reduce dependence on fossil resources, leading to diversification of energy sources. The overall thermal efficiency of the high-temperature gas furnace is expected to increase to at least 60%, because its high-temperature gases of around 1,000 degrees C can be used for heating processes, and the waste heat can be further used for generation of steam for power production. The goals at present are to clarify conditions for the realization of the water electrolysis process relative to various primary energy sources and to experimentally construct a small practical electrobath to operate at high temperature and high pressure for the attainment of high economic efficiency. Efforts in this fiscal year are mentioned below. Surveys and studies are conducted about hydrogen production by water electrolysis and about achievements in the past and problems at present concerning hydrogen production by water electrolysis in Japan and overseas. The expected role of water electrolysis in various primary energy sources is also studied and evaluated. For a high-temperature high-pressure water electrolysis bath conceptual design (small test plant, bathing temperature 120 degrees C, pressure 20atm, hydrogen production rate 2Nm{sup 3}/h), studies are conducted about a constant-load type high-temperature high-pressure (bipolar) diaphragm-assisted water electrolysis bath and a variable-load type high-temperature high-pressure diaphragm-assisted water electrolysis bath. Surveys and studies are also conducted about the expected role of water electrolysis in various primary energy sources, and the role is evaluated. (NEDO)

The permanent magnets have been investigated and developed, for eventual commercialization of a 10 MWh power storage system by high-temperature superconducting flywheel. The permanent magnet rotors have been already developed in the previous years using a praseodymium-based magnet (Pr magnet) and neodymium-based sintered magnet (Nd sintered magnet), and the target rotational speed of 30,000 rpm has been attained. For development of the magnetic circuit to produce a stronger and smoother magnetic field, magnetic flux density of the Nd sintered magnet is measured. It shows a lower magnetic flux irregularity than the Pd magnet, but there is still room for further improvement. For development of large-size permanent magnet fabrication techniques, it is confirmed that the large-size Nd sintered magnet can be easily magnetized by partial magnetizing, as is the case with the Pr magnet. In this year, the irregular magnetic flux is three-dimensionally simulated, based on the results obtained in the previous years, to find that the simulated results are in good agreement with the observed ones. The measures to solve the problems are also investigated. It is also confirmed that the large-size ring magnet can be easily magnetized by partial magnetization. (NEDO)

The R and D program is implemented for permanent magnet, as part of the project aimed at commercialization of a 10 MWh-class high-temperature superconducting magnetic bearing type power storage system. A speed of rotation of 28,570 rpm is attained by using an iron intermediate ring for a Pr permanent magnet rotator and reinforcing the rotator with a plastic hoop reinforced with carbon fibers three-fold (CFPR hoop). The speed is increased to 31,300 rpm by interlacing carbon fibers also in the radial direction and replacing iron for the intermediate ring by titanium. The highest speed of rotation of 33,506 rpm is realized by the rotator of permanent magnet of sintered Nd. The magnetic circuit of stronger, more smooth magnetic field needs the permanent magnet of less uneven magnetic flux. The magnet is of a monoaxially anisotropic rare-earth metal, with four-fold magnetic ring bodies having fan-shaped small pieces arranged on each ring. Uneven magnetic flux occurs at the joint between these small pieces. The one-body-ring magnet of radially anisotropic, sintered Nd is developed, and incorporated in the repulsion type magnetic circuit, to reduce unevenness of the magnetic flux. (NEDO)

This project is aimed at development of automatic rotary table type digging apparatus capable of digging high-temperature beds of 3,000 to 5,000 m in depth, 400 degrees C and 500 kg/cm{sup 2}. The automatic excavation apparatus is designed based on the concept that the driller is separated from the running drawworks side for other works. However, it is operated manually in a traditional manner, when the bed for which it is to be used is under complex conditions, or when the bed properties require frequent changes in digging conditions with respect to bit load and speed of rotation. The apparatus works, when the bed is considered to be under essentially constant conditions at a fairly high depth, in such a way that a combination of bit load and speed of rotation is set by the driller, and the work line wound on the drawworks drum is let out to keep the bit load constant. It is equipped with, e.g., a controller, converter and brake operating device, detecting suspension load by the controller, when it increases, increasing speed of air motor after comparing the load with the reference level, and relaxing the brake, to keep the suspension load at the set level. When the suspension load decreases, on the other hand, the air motor is decelerated to tighten the brake. (NEDO)

Following the previous fiscal year, a flywheel technology survey committee by men of learning and experience was organized to make a comparative study on various flywheel energy storage systems. Concerning the list-making for checking each element of the high temperature superconducting flywheel system, characteristics and reasons for employment of the small model and medium model were outlined in terms of the system structure (structure in single unit, structure in more than one units), flywheel, bearing, electrically-driven generator, etc. Also about the system in which no superconducting magnetic bearing is used, the information is collected in Japan and abroad through internet, etc., to outline the system. Further, main results obtained in the project were made public in main international conferences or academic meetings such as EUCAS and ISOTC108. At the same time, visits were paid to research institutes such as Cambridge University in the U.K. for the purpose of supplementing the survey so far made, to investigate the recent trend of the research. The purpose of this research is to clarify the application condition and effectiveness of high-temperature CO2 fixation and utilization technology. To evaluate the present process, it was compared with others, such as separation using a polymer membrane, physico-chemical absorption process, adsorption process, hydrogen contact reduction process, and biological fixation. The development trends of absorption, membrane, adsorption, and cryogenic separation were investigated. The questionnaire was carried out about the separation technologies which are in the stage of performance test using actual gas, to arrange and compare the data and information. The current trends of chemical and biological CO2 fixation and utilization technology were also investigated for arranging the subjects. High-temperature CO2 disposal by the carbonation in concrete waste has been studied, to clarify its application conditions and effectiveness. In order to compare the separation technologies, treatment processes of CO2 in the exhaust gas from boilers of LNG power generation and coal fired power generation were simulated. These processes were simulated by ASPEN PLUS for the modeling. Trends of application of ASPEN PLUS and collection of information were surveyed by participating in the ASPEN WORLD. 103 refs., 51 figs., 55 tabs.

For the purpose of evaluating the basic characteristics of high-temperature superconducting magnetic bearings (SBM), a system model is designed, experimentally manufactured and tested, which is embodied in the design/evaluation of a large-scale system, with an investigation carried out for the introduction of the system into an electrical power system. In this framework, an examination and research were conducted for the system design technology on which each component technology in the system structure can be applied consistently in the system. In the comparative assessment of various flywheel power storage systems, the specifications and achievements were compared in the component elements of the flywheel systems developed in Europe, America and Japan through the literature studies and the field survey, with examination performed towards the future development. As a result, it was found that, in America, bearings were all SMB's without control. Development is made on bit materials that can efficiently drill high-temperature ground bed to 3,000 to 5,000 m under geothermal conditions of 350 degrees C and 400 kg/cm{sup 2}. Alloy composition excellent in corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, high-temperature hardness, and repulsion resistance without decreasing damage resistance lower than the existing products is Cr{sub 3}C{sub 2} amount of 1%, WC of 2.5 microns, and Co/(Co + Ni) of 50%. Dispersion strengthening is most suitable for a metallurgically sintered powder cutter. Adding carbide of 5% by volume or metal as dispersion strengthening particles enhances hardness almost without damaging tenacity. Compression yield has also increased. Good dispersion strengthened materials include W and WC. On cutter materials for rock drilling bits used under severe conditions of high temperatures, high pressures, and corrosion environment, natures nearly close to the target were provided, and prospect for shape provision was obtained. These natures include mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, corrosion and wear resistance, an inside strengthening method, and a surface hardening method. Dispersion strengthening by adding micro fine hard powder to the inside strengthening method was used to have obtained the intended achievement. Positioning of the metallurgically sintered powder was made clear. (NEDO)

A combination of superhard alloy and diamond powder has been widely used as the solid type edge. The solid type with only a superhard alloy edge is no better than the traditional metal bit. It is ironical to admit that one of the most important items in the development of solid bits for digging high-temperature beds is not related to high temperature itself but development of highly efficient, long serviceable bits, growing out of the inefficient digging mechanisms for the conventional solid bits. It is considered that use of a superhard alloy edge is disadvantageous for digging hard rocks in the so-called scratching manner, for the two major reasons: (1) a superhard alloy is certainly resistant to wear, but nothing to that of diamond, and (2) it is homogeneous and lacks directional properties, such as the cleavage plane of diamond, which is effective for cutting. This project is aimed at development, on a trial basis, and eventual commercialization of new types of solid bits serviceable for extended periods by drastically improving suerhard alloys to provide them with new structures, e.g., those corresponding to the crystal axes of diamond, and also introducing a concept of crushing. To improve the tenacity and reliability of ceramics, the fiber reinforced ceramics composites compounding high strength long fibers and ceramics have been investigated. In this study, carbon fibers were selected as reinforcement fibers. The hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) was selected as a matrix having the plastic deformation performance. To intend to control the composition of the fiber/matrix interface, composites were created by adding polysilazane which was an organic Si (Si3N4) source. Relationships between the condition of interface of each phase and the high temperature mechanical properties were examined by changing the fabrication condition, to grasp the technical problems, such as the optimization of fabrication condition. Knowledge on the fabrication of long fiber reinforced ceramics composites was obtained including the arbitrary control technology of interface consistency of ceramics composites for super high temperature structures. The carbon fiber reinforced hBN composites developed in this study have excellent strength up to 1,500 centigrade and fracture energy, and they are new prospective materials as well as C/C composites. 4 refs., 37 figs., 13 tabs.

shown quite widely in colloquia and symposia. The films revealed phenomena of qualitative interest such as mergers, bridges, and tails, and the formation of bars. Similar results were also being obtained by Hohl around that time and both pieces of work were no doubt influential in shaping the thinking of people working in this field. One striking feature of the calculations was that spiral arms formed initially but were transient. To keep the spiral patterns from collapsing it seemed necessary to artificially heat the disks. Only later, when the existence of massive halos was recognized (by Ostriker and Peebles), could the true cause of stability be surmised. From the mid-seventies on, Kevin worked on topics in astrophysical fluid dynamics and applied mathematics, largely with students. Some of this work was published, but it has to be said that much of his best work was not. A good example of the latter is his three-part handwritten manuscript on the dynamics of barred spirals that he distributed to several people over thirty years ago. Many of his other unpublished calculations have been deposited in the Columbia Library, and there are no doubt several things of interest to be found among his papers. While one can only speculate on why so much of his work went unpublished, I find a remark by de Kooning quite helpful in thinking about it. In a review of book about the painter, Peter Schjeldahl reported that "He [de Kooning] made ...paintings...and destroyed nearly all of them, to his subsequent regret....He explained `I was so modest then that I was vain.'" When I accused Kevin of a similar mindset, he chuckled and said "You are right, but don't tell anyone." Kevin was widely read and he had a remarkable awareness ofliterature. He was especially devoted to the work of P.G. Wodehouse. He also loved the Marx Brothers and late in life discovered Zero Mostel of whom he became an instant fan. Element technologies were developed for the manufacture of superconducting magnetic bearing (SMB) with the purpose of putting to practical use a 10 MWh class high-temperature superconducting flywheel power storage system. This paper explains the fiscal 1997 results. A {phi} 180 radial type SMB was designed and fabricated that satisfied the rotational strength at 17,200 rpm for a medium-sized model for measuring characteristics. Compared with the bearing made in the preceding year, improvements in the bearing dynamics were contrived such as flux creep, load capacity and rotational loss, with the maximum flux density improved by 30%; however, only a few percent improvement was attained in field uniformity. An SMB characteristics measuring and testing machine was built, with the characteristics measured. It was confirmed that the rotational loss of a control type magnetic bearing and the intrinsic performance of the testing machine were unchanged regardless of the operation/non-operation of the radial type SMB. The characteristics of the {phi} 180 axial bearing were measured by a stationary type bearing constant testing machine made in 1995, which provided a load capacity characteristics curve with the initially set gap as a parameter as well as a minor loop curve and a load capacity. Also obtained were the maximum average bearing pressure and the maximum load capacity. (NEDO)

On various methods conceivable as a flywheel system, characteristics were extracted in such points as structure, shape, axial support system, generator motor, and protective system, and compared with the method being developed in the present project. Test items methods, etc., were studied for a small model system (0.5 kWh, {phi} 400 mm, 30,000 rpm) for the purpose of clarifying problems and ways in approaching a large system (10 MWh class) through various tests of the small one. The main test items were a free-run test, steady state rotation test and a heat-run test, and the main points to evaluate were oscillation characteristics and the control performance of AMB, flux creep and loss, for example. Investigation was conducted of a dummy flywheel experimental equipment and a highly efficient power converter with the object of contributing to the development of a flywheel equipment for daily load leveling. This paper explains fiscal 1997 results of the development of technologies for characteristic analysis of superconducting magnetic bearings (SMB), the development aimed at putting a 10 MWh high temperature superconducting flywheel power storage system to practical use. Following fiscal 1996, calculation programs were prepared for a load capacity and bearing constant (spring constant, damping constant) on an axial type SMB, with validity of the program examined through comparison with experimental values. A finite element method was applied to a complex magnetic field by a magnet arrangement devised for the purpose of improving load capacity, dividing a superconductor into divided sections so that the effect of a complex magnetic field distribution could be reflected, determining the magnetization generating in each divided section by using a two-dimensional Bean model, and developing a method for calculating load capacity of each divided section by a magnetic moment method. A program was completed for calculating the load capacity and bearing constant of the entire bearing in the axial type SMB. The calculated value of the load capacity and the bearing constant showed a superior agreement with the experimental value. (NEDO)

With an objective of engineering utilization of superconducting materials in the electronics field, research and development has been inaugurated on superconducting elements having new functions. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1988. In the research of a superconducting element technology, researches were inaugurated on the four themes of the electric field effect type and charge injection type elements in the proximity effect type tri-terminal element, and low energy electron type and high energy electron type elements in the superconduction base type tri-terminal element. In bonding superconductors with semiconductors, discussions were given on a method to form both conductors by controlling oxygen concentrations of oxides having the same composition, and a method to laminate the superconductors on the semiconductors under super-high vacuum atmosphere. In the research of a new functional element technology, researches were inaugurated on the two themes of a single electron tunneling type tri-terminal element and a local potential tunneling type tri-terminal element. In addition, works were performed on epitaxial growth of high-quality superconducting films as a common basic technology, and such an assignment has been made clear as the necessity of controlling the crystalline azimuth. Relative to the research and development of technologies for fabricating, and assessing, materials for the constitution of high-temperature solid electrolyte fuel cells, stabilized zirconia solid electrolyte fuel cell manufacturing technologies are developed by use of thin film formation techniques such as high-frequency sputtering, plasma CVD (chemical vapor deposition), and the thermolysis of organic zirconia compound coating. As the result, it is found that high-frequency sputtering produces thin film which is satisfying in terms of cost efficiency. Furthermore, it is found that defects in solid electrolytic thin film formed by the high-frequency sputtering method, that is, pinholes and cracks, will be remedied when the coating thermolysis method is jointly applied. In the research on fuel cell power systems, column-type high-temperature solid electrolyte fuel cells are built, and a power generation test is conducted. In the manufacture and processing of high quality glass to be used with electronic devices and displays, values representing its physical properties at high temperatures, such as viscosity, density, cubical expansion coefficient, and surface tension are necessary. Studies were conducted about techniques for evaluating physical values of such high temperature molten materials, and efforts were under way to develop the research results into international standards. Techniques for measuring physical values of high temperature molten soda ash based glass were improved for higher precision, and techniques for evaluating physical values of high temperature molten borosilicate glass were studied. Delegates were sent to International Commission on Glass (ICG) and technical committee TC18 for joining discussion, decision was made that researchers participate in robin tests on molten glass thermal conductivity, density, and cubical expansion coefficient, and pertinent activities were launched. Introduction of electric power storage equipment is sought, which will be discretely installed in power distribution substations. Therefore, elementary technologies were researched on 'manufacture of super-conductive magnetic bearings' intended for practical application of an electric power storage system of 10-MWh class using high-temperature super-conductive flywheels. Research and development has been performed on different kinds of super-conductive magnetic bearings which combine high-temperature super-conductive materials with permanent magnets. In order to measure the characteristics of the super-conductive magnetic bearings, measurements were executed on rotation loss, loading power and bearing constants. In the measurement of the rotation loss, a {phi} 180 axial type super-conductive magnetic bearing using an Sm-based superconductor ({phi} 180AxSMB2) was given various kinds of tests by using a rotation loss measuring and testing machine. The results were compared with those for the {phi} 180AxSMB1 using the YBCO-based superconductor and other SMBs. In the measurements for the other items, various items were measured on dynamic rotation properties of the {phi} 180AxSMB and {phi} 180RaSMB by using a static bearing constant testing machine. In discussing the loading power characteristics, the dynamic rotation properties of the {phi} 180RaSMB were measured, and the loading power characteristics were discussed on super-conductive magnetic bearings for medium size models and super-conductive magnetic bearings for large system FS. Research and development of heavy-current high-voltage technologies is conducted for oxide superconductive transformers for the purpose of rendering superconductive the power distribution transformers installed in large numbers at urban underground substations. A proposition is made of a high-efficiency conductor constructing method in which a transposed parallel conductor is constituted of strands which are Bi-2223 Ag-Mn sheath tape wires, and the method is proved to be valid. A winding structure is contrived in which parallel conductors are mechanically reinforced and provided with cooling channels, and technologies to deal with short-circuit currents and rush currents in case of accidents are established. After conducting numerical simulations of the response of a model to thunderstroke impulses and test of model coil withstand voltages, an electrical insulation technology that complies with JEC (Japanese Electrotechnical Committee) specifications for liquid nitrogen cooled power facilities is established. Making use of the results of technological development efforts for each element technology, a 22kV/6.9kV-1,000kVA high-temperature oxide superconductive transformer is successfully fabricated. The product of the efforts stands higher than the equipment performance level set forth in the initial development plan. (NEDO)

The melting point of ash is one of the most important physical properties in the process of coal gasification. A fluidized bed gasification furnace is suitable for the gasification of coal whose ash has a high melting point, but it does not work at temperatures higher than the melting point of the ash. A high-temperature gasification furnace, though not suitable for gasifying coal whose ash has a high melting point, gasifies the kinds of coal that the fluidized bed gasification furnace fails to deal with. Accordingly, almost all kinds of coal are to be appropriately gasified when these two types of gasification furnaces are available. The goal of the development effort is the achievement of a coal utilization factor of 99% or more and a thermal efficiency of 80% or more. The technology elements have to deal with the structure of furnace walls and refractory materials for them, discharge of slag, feeding of raw materials, recovery of exhaust heat, measurement and control, gasification furnace simulation, etc. A proposition is presented on a conceptual design and prototype for a 50t/d pilot plant in which the above-mentioned factors are organically integrated. This paper describes development of synergy ceramics. In developing a technology to design property fusion processes, studies were made on control of nano-structures by using a high-order nano-structure process, and on evaluation of micro region properties. Such nanocomposite bodies were selected for the object as piezoelectric ceramics PZT group (which increases mechanical characteristics and durability without impeding electric characteristics) and alumina-group YAG (which enhances high-temperature strength). Three-dimensional analyses were performed on particle morphology and crack structures by using focusing ion beams as a study on destruction behavior by means of microscopic and macroscopic particle morphology control. This paper reports the achievements of research and development on control of continuous small pore morphology (uni-directionally pierced pores on a new-type low expansion material used as matrix), intra-particle interface (discusses methods to micronize silicon nitride ceramics tissues), intra-layer interface (oxide-based ceramics are laminated on surface to improve oxidation and heat resistance without impeding high-temperature mechanical properties of non-oxide-based ceramics), intra-layer boundary (Pb-based double composition piezoelectric body having stable layer interface), and boundaries between inorganic and organic matters. Known to the FBI, INS, and IRS as Mr. Ah Wing Hom, he was also Lin Jian Fu, Jian Fu (Tough Guy, or just Fu to the readers of the many poems and short stories he published in Chinese over four decades in the twentieth century. And to still others, primarily English-readers of his writing, he was Happy Lim, an ironic, even tragically bizarre name, as his life was far from pleasant. On New Year's Day 1986, he died alone in a dingy San Francisco Chinatown bachelor hotel suffering from a bacterial infection and a chronic blood disorder that had required the amputation of all his toes the year before. He was seventy-eight years of age and had spent most of his life within blocks of where he died.

Current technologies are surveyed and tasks to discharge are extracted relating to heat resistant alloys, intermetallic compounds, ceramic based composite materials, and carbon based composite materials, which are expected to be used for hydrogen combustion turbines. Concerning oxide dispersion strengthened alloys for cooled vanes, tasks to discharge are extracted, which relate to the designing, development, and selection of vane materials, bonding layer materials, and coating materials, and to thermal barrier coating techniques and machining techniques. Concerning porous fiber reinforced ceramic materials for ceramic shells, tasks involve the elucidation of corrosion behavior and manufacturing techniques. MoSi{sub 2}, which is a promising high-melting intermetallic compound, also presents some tasks to discharge for an increase in its high strength and high ductility in an ultrahigh-temperature steam/reducing atmosphere, and for improvement in manufacturing techniques. For the carbon/carbon composite material which is the sole material usable in the ultrahigh-temperature domain of 2,000 degrees C, an analysis and evaluation method taking its anisotropy into consideration needs to be developed, and an oxidation resistant coating has to be also developed. In addition to the designing and development of these materials, development is necessary of materials testing and evaluating techniques. (NEDO)

This paper explains the results of development of coal liquefaction technology under the Sunshine Project in fiscal 1980. As a part of the development of brown coal liquefaction technology, pulverization of the first-dehydration brown coal was technologically established, as were adjustment of slurry and equipment for the second-dehydration process. A 20kg/h high temperature in-oil pulverizer was designed, constructed and made ready for the studies. A high temperature mill was a wet type ball mill, 500mm{phi}(diameter) x 1,500 mm length and 2.2kw. Coal was fully pulverized even in a solvent such as creosote oil and anthracene oil freed from crystal, and was adjustable to a prescribed particle size distribution. The wet type slurry adjustment method offered prospects that solvent/coal slurry moisture could be controlled to a prescribed value. An analysis was made on the mill outlet gas and drain collection liquid at the time of high temperature in-oil pulverization, which provided knowledge of securing safety. An analysis was also made on the influence of the heating temperature rise of the mill on the strength, which provided basic data for examining the strength of the mill. Using brown coal as the raw material, slurry was prepared, which confirmed that the device had functions as planned. (NEDO)

Efforts are made in cooperation with Vietnam to develop a heat insulating material for buildings, to be used for passive cooling mechanisms symbiotic with the environment and capable of energy conservation. Vegetables are planted on the surface of this building material. Activities are conducted in the three domains of (1) the development of energy conservation-conscious basic materials, (2) selection of vegetables, and (3) the simulation of the effect of the developed materials on temperature. The basic type of the newly developed building material is an asbestos-free vegetable fiber-reinforced cement slate which is covered by such vegetables as members of the Passifloraceae, Vitaceae, and Araliaceae. Conducted in domain (1) are surveys of the actual state of basic material manufacturing in Vietnam and studies of the basic properties of vegetable fiber, properties displayed by vegetable fiber under various chemical environments, selection of vegetable fiber as the basic aggregate, mineral fiber, and the basic material manufacturing conditions. The result of heat load calculation carried out using SMASH for Windows ver.2, which is a program developed for thermal load calculation for houses, shows that the new material lowers the temperature by approximately 3 degrees C. This program is aimed at establishment of the techniques for milling of brown coal treated by primary dehydration and slurry adjustment, and secondary hydration plant, as part of the project for developing the techniques for liquefaction of brown coal. Brown coal (Australian Yallourn coal) treated by primary dehydration, solvents (creosote and decrystallized anthracene), and catalysts are used as the stock samples, to investigate the coal characteristics with respect to milling crushability, dehydration and liquefaction reactivity, and the slurries are prepared by changing coal charge rate, solvent and preparation temperature, to collect the data regarding, e.g., coal concentration, coal particle size, moisture level and liquefaction reactivity. It is found that milling crushability tends to decrease as coal charge rate or solvent/coal ratio increases whether creosote or decrystallized anthracene is used as the solvent. Milling crushability is unaffected by slurry preparation temperature. Content of residual moisture in the slurry decreases to 1% or less, when slurry preparation temperature is increased to 100 degrees C or higher. Liquefaction reactivity of the slurry shows slight dependence on slurry preparation temperature, when it is increased to 180 degrees C. (NEDO)
