    Veronica P. Scrol

    1994-06-01

Full Text Available This essay approaches Ingeborg Bachmann's "Undine Goes" from a Lacanian perspective. The object of the study is three-fold: first, to demonstrate Bachmann's deconstruction of the ideal ego through the water-sprite Undine's criticism of the human Hans. Second, to transcend the limitations of dualistic interpretations (as noted by some feminist critics, by introducing the triple Lacanian registers—the imaginary, the symbolic, and the real—into this particular reading. Finally, to establish Bachmann's monologic text as a discourse of the real and Undine as the voice of the death instinct.

Volume 19 of the series published by the Erich-Maria-Remarque Archive is entitled “Writing against War and Violence” (“Schreiben gegen Krieg und Gewalt” and approaches Ingeborg Bachmann and German language literature from 1945 to 1980. The volume contains contributions based on a symposium that took place at the University of Nottingham on January 14-15, 2005. Central to the symposium was the question as to which strategies Bachmann and other German language authors utilized in their approach to National Socialism, the Holocaust, the Second World War, the Cold War, or the Vietnam War, as well as German colonialism. The impetus for the conference was the exhibition Writing Against the War: Ingeborg Bachmann, 1926-1973 conceived in Vienna and Salzburg. In the volume at hand, thirteen contributions in total illuminate literary confrontations with the themes of war and violence.

    Aija Sakova

    2012-04-01

Full Text Available In an interview from 1971 the Austrian poet and author Ingeborg Bachmann (b 1923 said that there are phenomena that science and scientific language cannot explain. According to her these are the phenomena that belong to the realm of writers and literature. In the same year Ene Mihkelson (b 1946, who had not yet published a single book of poetry or a novel because of censorship, pondered on the role of the author within society: “The author digs under the surface and the author’s responsibility to society lies in his/her persistence, in his/her duty to suffer, to endure stress, which the people in the midst of their busy, daily lives are unable to fully grasp.” Responsibility to society and the duty to suffer and explore the deepest layers below the surface are common to both Mihkelson and Bachmann. Both writers were born and grew up in the shadow of war, violence and totalitarianism. Mihkelson was brought up in a guerrilla family in Soviet Estonia; Bachmann spent her childhood years growing up in the Nationalist-Socialist Austria and in her youth she witnessed the Second World War and its catastrophic consequences. So both of them understand that as writers they cannot overlook the events that they had, either directly or indirectly, witnessed. In an interview from 2009 Mihkelson said that the fact that she remained alive while many did not, that she was not deported to Siberia although it could have happened, has obligated her to write and reflect on what had happened. No consensus has been reached in Europe to condemn Communism as a crime against humanity, but for Estonians Communism and the 50 years of Soviet regime signify a lengthy experience of a totalitarian regime and, in spite of a possible opposition from German-speaking cultures, Communism very often equals Nazism in Estonia. According to Mihkelson, in order to understand and reflect this experience it is not sufficient to rely only on the archives, biographies and books of

  5. Images of the Second World War in Austrian Literature after 1945

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Karl Müller

    2007-01-01

Full Text Available The author examines selected examples of post-1945 Austrian literature, asking what pictures of the Second World War they imparted and what role they played when, certainly from 1948 on, a certain image of history began to take shape in Austria against the background of the Cold War. This image involved a fade-out in particular of the racist nature of the war, and it had a collectively exonerating and distorting impact. Attention is paid to the stories and novels of former participants in the war and National Socialists, such as, for example, Erich Landgrebe, Erich Kern, Hans Gustl Kernmayr, Kurt Ziesel. A contrast is seen in the anti-war novel, Letzte Ausfahrt (Last Exit (1952 by the former soldier Herbert Zand, who turns against the dominant image of history, as well as in Ingeborg Bachmann's use of war memories as a topic. The texts are read as a reservoir of selective memory: on the one hand they are critical, individual counter-memories and on the other hand, they make a positive contribution to the formation of the aforesaid collective image. One may say that a war of perception was fought around the Second World War; it was undoubtedly won in the immediate post-war years by those literary works that legitimized or at least trivialized the war. The critical voices of Herbert Zand, Gerhard Fritsch, and Ingeborg Bachmann were unfortunately the quieter ones and were not particularly successful in their time.

    2011-10-01

Full Text Available Between 1890 and 1933, male birth fantasies became a widespread phenomenon in European culture. One of the key examples of male birth fantasies is Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s “African” novel Mafarka the Futurist. The novel’s protagonist, Mafarka, gives birth to a child by his will power and by drawing on diverse formations of knowledge, from alchemy to theories of evolution. In addition to the consideration given the psycho-historical, cultural, and scientific contexts of male birth fantasies in the avant-garde, the contribution reflects on sibling encryptment within the relationship to the mother as one more aspect of a span of genealogy one might term “Maternal Modernity.” Christine Kanz is Professor of German Literature at Ghent University in Belgium. Her contribution refers to her 2009 book Maternale Moderne. Männliche Gebärphantasien zwischen Kultur und Wissenschaft, 1890- 1933. In addition she edited several collections and authored another book on Ingeborg Bachmann, and numerous articles and reviews in the area of interdisciplinary studies. Before entering the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, class of Daniel Roth, in 2008, Adam Cmiel trained in various media in Bad Dürkheim, Hamburg, Mannheim, and Trier. He has participated in nine exhibitions since the onset of his studies in Karlsruhe.

Full Text Available This  article  focuses  on  a  frequently  neglected  part  of  the Norwegian author  Inger Hagerup’s (1905-1985 work: her occupation with the popular genre of radio play. Based  upon  Ernst  Cassirer’s dynamic  approach  to formative  cultural  work  and expressive meaning, the article investigates two of Hagerup’s works produced for the Norwegian  Broadcasting Corporation (NRK:  Firstly her own radioplay Hilsen fra Katarina  (1949, secondly  her  translation  of  Ingeborg Bachmann’s  Der  gute  Gott von Manhattan  (1957.  Through  a juxtaposition  of  the  two,  Hagerup’s  own radio play stands out as an innovative contribution to the particular Norwegian development of this genre, and as a modern, far more experimental, work than her poems from the same period. Her translation of Bachmann’s work appears as surprisingly reductive  with  respect  to  the complexity  of  Bachmann’s original  text.  The  article points out how the translation of Bachmann’s play to a Norwegian context can also be viewed as a cultural transfer highlighting different ideas of a popular genre during the first decades after World War II.

  2. Rock stress measurements. Preparatory stage of the equipment development project

    International Nuclear Information System (INIS)

    Mononen, S.; Hakala, M.; Mikkola, P.

    2002-01-01

In recent years the rock stress measurement methods used in Finland have been overcoring and hydraulic fracturing. There have been mainly two companies involved in these measurements, namely Suomen Malmi Oy (Smoy) and SwedPower AB. Smoy has done measurements for mines and for rock engineering projects, whereas SwedPower AB has mainly been involved in nuclear waste disposal investigations and conducted hydraulic fracturing measurements in deep boreholes. Smoy together with its partners started in February 2001 a project named JTM, which was a preliminary stage for a future project, which aims to develop a device most suitable for rock stress measurements in Finland. The partners in the project were HUT Rock Engineering, Posiva Oy, Saanio and Riekkola Oy, Gridpoint Finland Oy and Geopros Oy. Tekes, the National Technology Agency, provided almost half of the project funding. In the management group of the project were Pekka Mikkola (chairman) and Tero Laurila from Smoy, Pekka Saerkkae and Sakari Mononen (full-time researcher) from HUT, Aimo Hautojaervi (Posiva Oy), Erik Johansson (Saanio and Riekkola Oy), Matti Hakala (Gridpoint Finland Oy) and Heikki Haemaelaeinen (Geopros Oy). The aim of the JTM-project was to find out the needs for the development of a device most suitable for rock stress measurements in Finnish mines and rock engineering projects. During the project work was done to find out the range of rock stress measurement devices available, to find out the needs for measurements, and to get acquainted to the measurements done in Scandinavia. Also a report of the most suitable methods for Finnish rock conditions was done based on literature and on interviews of rock stress experts. Based on all the information collected during the project a clear picture of the needs for rock stress measurements in Finland could be formed and a preliminary plan of a future project was done. The aim of the suggested project is to build a device based on hydraulic fracturing

This anthology contains articles about three main topics: first, university-wide concepts for human resource and organizational development regarding the touchstone gender mainstreaming; second, findings of teaching and learning research from a gender-sensitive perspective; and third, gender aspects and gender competence in the everyday life of teaching and learning. The individual findings offer a good orientation; however, regarding the theoretical and conceptual level of gender research and gender politics at the universities, it has to be noted critically that gender concepts and political strategies from varying traditions are put together abruptly without reflecting on their genealogies and political contexts. This is particularly true for the concept of gender diversity management. Furthermore, the international state of research regarding new forms of regulation in university and science, particularly considering processes of doing gender, is ignored.

. However, depression scores increased significantly between baseline and after 8 weeks and between baseline and after 3 months in the rehabilitative gaming group. No differences were found in patients' self-efficacy between the three measuring points in any of the groups. Participants did use the games (rehabilitation group: 93%, 27/29; entertainment group 100%, 29/29). Games were seen as a usable intervention (rehabilitation group: 70%, 14/29; entertainment group: 83%, 20/29). The rehabilitation group was less satisfied with the gaming intervention (68%, 13/29 vs 83%, 20/29), but they were more willing to use the game after the intervention period (76%, 16/29 vs 63%, 15/29). Total time spent on gaming during the intervention period was low (15.22 hour rehabilitation gaming group, 19.22 hour entertainment gaming group). We did not find differences between the groups in improvement in the outcome measures. The improvements in test performance by all three groups may reflect rehearsal effects. Entertainment gaming had elements that could be considered when rehabilitative games are designed for, implemented in, and assessed in larger clinical trials for persons with TBI. He started his presentation by giving demographic information about Finland. He described universities as fundamental regional players in e-Learning and education in general. He pointed out that ICT can be considered as a social communication system instead of technology only. He also suggested that the letter ”e” in e-learning should be read as ”enhanced”. He summarized the Bologna process and described the importance of the harmonized curriculum. He continued his presentation by giving an overview of the Finnish Education System and talked about the Finnish Virtual University System and its activities. He mentioned the development of e-Learning material, e-Learning courses, ICT training and local support services as the local activities at each university; and thematic networks and development projects as inter-university cooperation; and the design of common portals and support services and common agreements, and international cooperation as national level activities. He also gave an overview of the ICT developments in Finland and talked about the web course registration system, the common learning platform developed in 2004, and Managed Learning Environment (MLE initiative in 2005. He talked about the eTTK project at the Helsinki Technology University. He described eAGE, MLE, CMS (Content Management system, Quality System and URTHA Project Management System as parts of the eTTK project and explained the rationale behind the eTTK project, one of which was the survival in the global and local community. He described the MLE in detail and talked about some of the features developed for the environment. In this respect, he described the Noppa-portal as a personalized front page for students and teachers and course home pages, Oodi as main student and course registration, Optima for e-Learning and
