  12. Review: Karl H. Hörning & Julia Reuter (Eds. (2004. Doing Culture. Neue Positionen zum Verhältnis von Kultur und sozialer Praxis [Doing Culture. New Positions On the Culture-Practice Relation

Directory of Open Access Journals (Sweden)

    Till Westermayer

    2006-03-01

Full Text Available The review discusses the proceedings of the 2003 conference on practice theory in the social sciences, published as "Doing Culture". It especially makes room for the presentation of the theoretically oriented parts of the volume—texts either comparing two different theories or working at the further development of practice theory. An overview is given about the other parts of the volume which present case studies or singular aspects. Concluding the review, open questions from the different texts are put together. "Doing Culture" is helpful if one wants to be informed about the current state of the "practical turn" in German-language sociology of technology and media. The heterogeneity of the volume—typical of congress proceedings—shows, on the one hand, the breadth of the contemporary discussion but shows, on the other hand, that "practice theory" as one singular theory with a widely used vocabulary still does not exist. 2007-01-01

Magnetic field response sensors designed as passive inductor- capacit or circuits produce magnetic field responses whose harmonic frequenci es correspond to states of physical properties for which the sensors measure. Power to the sensing element is acquired using Faraday induc tion. A radio frequency antenna produces the time varying magnetic fi eld used for powering the sensor, as well as receiving the magnetic field response of the sensor. An interrogation architecture for disce rning changes in sensor's response frequency, resistance and amplitud e is integral to the method thus enabling a variety of measurements. Multiple sensors can be interrogated using this method, thus eliminat ing the need to have a data acquisition channel dedicated to each se nsor. The method does not require the sensors to be in proximity to a ny form of acquisition hardware. A vast array of sensors can be used as interchangeable parts in an overall sensing system.

At the transition to the twenty first century ISOLDE was undergoing a major upgrade from a very successful low-energy radioactive ion beam facility towards a new era of nuclear structure studies employing accelerated radioactive beams [1]. The first accelerated beam was obtained in November 2001 when REX-ISOLDE produced a 2.2 MeV/u beam of 26Na ions. Additionally, the ISOLDE complex was made particularly attractive facility due to other break-through developments in the fields of laser ion sources and ion traps. Some highlights from the years 1999 to 2002 during my time as a group leader will be presented. 1. Juha Äystö, CERN’s longest serving experimental facility, in Physics Reports 403 (2004) 459

    2003-01-01

The second of ATLAS's eight toroid coils has been turned over to allow the securing operations for the "pancakes" (in essence two flat-wound coils) to be completed. Work on assembling the coils takes place in two phases. The first, integration, phase involves packing the two pancakes into their vacuum vessel. Tu rning the coil overThis is done using bladders filled with resin and glass microbeads under pressure. The resin is heated and, once cooled, holds the pancakes in place. The coil then has to be turned over as the operation has to be repeated on the other side. However, turning an ATLAS coil over is no easy matter. Each of the detector's toroid coils is 25 metres long, 5 metres wide and weighs 40 tonnes. To turn it over, the coil is put into a frame, but this weighs 65 tonnes altogether and the overhead travelling crane cannot support more than 60 tonnes. A special technique had to be devised to turn the coils over and then transport them to the heating table. Transport of the coilTo carry out this op...

OSA is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, the risk being more frequently encountered with severe degrees of OSA. Increased sympathetic activation and impaired cardiac autonomic control as reflected by depressed baroreceptor reflex sensitivity (BRS are possible mechanisms involved in the cardiovascular complications of OSA. However, it is not known at what stage of OSA that changes in BRS appear. The aim of this study was to evaluate BRS in patients with mild OSA. Methods: The study population consisted of 81 overweight patients with mild OSA and 46 body weight-matched non-OSA subjects. BRS, apnea-hypopnea index, body mass index, and metabolic parameters were assessed. The phenylephrine test was used to measure BRS. Results: Patients in the OSA group were slightly but significantly older than the non-OSA population (50.3±9.3 years vs 45.7±11.1 years, P=0.02. Body mass index, percentage body fat, blood pressure, fasting glucose, insulin, and lipid levels did not differ between the OSA patients and non-OSA subjects. The objective of the project is to demonstrate the operation of a 500 kW stoker-burning system in practice. The project is continuation of the previous projects of the Bioenergy research programme, 303 - Development of automatic heating system for wood chips and sod peat, carried out by VTT Energy, and Y301 - Development of heating boiler for wood chips and sod peat, carried out by Hoegfors Laempoe Oy. A 500 kW (nominal power) stoker-burner was constructed on the basis of the results of these projects. The burner was mounted on ETNA 500 bioenergy boiler. Screw-feeders, constructed by Maamiehen Saehkoe Oy, were used as fuel feeding system. Maamiehen Saehkoe Oy delivered also the automation system for the combustion equipment. Combustion air pre-heater was mounted on the boiler for promotion of the combustion of moist fuel. Testing of the equipment was carried out at the laboratory of VTT Energy in Jyvaeskylae in October-November 1994. In December 1994 the equipment was transported to Jalasjaervi, to heating station of the farmer Juha Jyrae. The actual heat generation started in the beginning of February 1995, when the greenhouses started to require heating. Sod peat has been used as the fuel. VTT Energy has carried out the efficiency and emission measurements in the heating station with sod peat in March 1995, and with reed canary grass in autumn 1995. The energy generation and fuel consumption have been followed all the time

    2017-11-01

Full Text Available The aim of this article is to provide information about how identity is formed in relation to civic education. The author of this study was inspired by Juha Hämiläinen's thesis, which claims that social pedagogy should become the main tool for building citizenship. Building an identity is a lifelong process, and adolescence is one of the most important and critical periods in this. The diversity of the social environment, the school and classroom climate have an impact on forming the identity of teenagers, and besides their personal identity, attention is also paid to the formation of their social and cultural identity. The article is a study that focuses on defining the concepts of identity, social and cultural identity and the relationship between identity formation and education. Civic education plays an important role here and should guide the students to take responsibility for their lives. Therefore, the following text deals with the concepts of secondary school education, the secondary school curriculum and civic competences. Based on a study of selected authors, the following study introduces concepts of identity in relation to cultural identity and conducts an analysis of the framework educational programs, since there is a space here for socio-pedagogical influence on the formation of cultural identity and the development of tolerance with regard to worldwide diversity.

Full Text Available This is a remarkably careful study of a little known Tibetan coming-of-age ritual as still practiced in rural Amdo, Qinghai Province, China. Structural analysis is complemented by a case study based on observations, interviews, recordings, and authentic folklore material in the original language. Pictures, tables, and a glossary complete the work. This is field anthropology at its best. Juha Janhunen, Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures, University of Helsinki The achievements of this book are many: it is analytically rigorous, rich in contextualized detail, and fascinating in subject matter. The authors' diverse backgrounds and strengths are manifested throughout this truly collaborative work which follows a major rite of passage in the life of a thirteen year-old Tibetan girl. For all scholars of Tibetan culture and society, and for any student of ethnography interested in learning how to thoroughly document a ritual, this book will be of great interest and lasting use. Mark Turin Director, Digital Himalaya Project & World Oral Literature Project, University of Cambridge This is an important contribution to Tibetan ethnography. The study is based on careful fieldwork, analysis, introduction, and translation of relevant myths and literary compositions, and comprehensive description of core components of Tibetan community life. The value of the work is that the study of a distinctively Tibetan women's ritual is accurately and fully presented in its own context. It is a unique record of an endangered tradition. Paul K Nietupski, John Carroll University This study has great value in examining in detail the coming-of-age ritual of girls in a single Tibetan village, thus providing a window through which to better view and understand community-based life, which is soon to change in the face of China-wide modernization. Current clinical practices do not generally include such monitoring of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α blockers on a routine basis. The main aims of this study were to estimate the probabilities of optimal and nonoptimal treatment decisions if infliximab or adalimumab drug trough level (DL and ADAbs are tested or not in rheumatoid arthritis, and to model cost-effectiveness of performing such monitoring on a routine basis. Data on DLs and ADAbs concentrations were obtained in Finland from clinically requested monitoring analyses of 486 and 1,137 samples from patients on adalimumab and infliximab, respectively. DL was within the target range in 42% of samples from adalimumab- and 50.4% of infliximab-treated patients. ADAbs were detected in approximately 20% and 13.5% of samples from adalimumab- and infliximab-treated patients, respectively. ADAbs were found in 52.3% and 41.3% of those with low adalimumab or infliximab DLs, respectively. The monitoring data were incorporated into probabilities for making the optimal treatment decision. Economic impact of clinical decision-making was modeled in a short-term (3–6 months scenario with 100 hypothetical patients. In the model, the combined measurement of DLs and ADAbs was cost-saving compared to the nontesting scenario when the monitoring results affected the treatment decision in at least 2–5 of 100 patients, a proportion which is easily

It is not easy to assess, or even to describe correctly a long and distinguished career that started about the time when I was born. In 1964 Stig Stenholm got both an engineering degree at the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT), and an MSc degree (in Mathematics) at the University of Helsinki. The two degrees demonstrate Stig's ability to understand both complex mathematics and experimental physics. Statistical physics or rather, quantum liquids, was the field in which Stig got his DPhil at Oxford in 1967, under the guidance of Dirk ter Haar. It is interesting that together they worked on studying fermions in a bosonic background [1]; at the time this meant, of course, 3He atoms as impurities in 4He liquid, but nowadays one would immediately connect such systems to the physics of cold atomic gases. The postdoctoral period in 1967-1968 at Yale University brought Stig in contact with Willis Lamb and laser physics [2]. Back in Finland, Stig's career in the 1970s was dominated by theoretical studies of gas lasers, especially pressure and collision effects on spectral lines and saturation spectroscopy, together with his first PhD student, Rainer Salomaa. A professorship at the University of Helsinki came in 1974, and in 1980 an important era started as Stig became the scientific director of the Research Institute for Theoretical Physics (TFT). At that time he also developed the semiclassical theory of laser cooling especially with Juha Javanainen. The laser spectroscopy work led to a textbook in 1984 [3], and the semiclassical laser cooling theory was summarized in a review article in 1986 [4]. These were not, of course, his only interests, as he also worked on free-electron lasers, ring-laser gyroscopes, multiphoton processes and quantum amplifiers. In an article written in 1990 in honour of Olli Lounasmaa [5], the founder of the famous Low Temperature Laboratory at HUT, Stig mentions that one of his most memorable achievements was acting as a bridge between the

Those forests are located around the world in different climate zones effecting widely on atmospheric composition via new particle formation. The Boreal forests solely cover one third of the forests extent and are one of the largest vegetation environments, forming a circumpolar band throughout the northern hemisphere continents, with a high potential to affect climate processes [1]. In order to more fully understand the possible climatic effects of the forests, the properties of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in varying conditions (e.g. a change in meteorological parameters or in the concentrations of biogenic and antropogenic trace gases) need to be better known. In this study, we applied the UFO-TDMA (ultrafine organic tandem differential mobility analyzer [2]) and the UFH-TDMA (ultrafine hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer [3]) methods parallel to shed light on the evolution of the nucleation and Aitken mode particle compositions (via physic-chemical properties) at a virgin boreal forest site in varying conditions. rning with a high EL. Activation timing differences existed between locations in all muscles except for the rectus femoris. The tibialis anterior and gluteus maximus were active for longer durations on the eZLS than in parabolic flight during walking. Ground reaction forces were greater with the LM-SLD than with bungees during eZLS locomotion. While the eZLS serves as a ground-based analog, researchers should be aware that subtle, but measurable, differences in kinematics and leg musculature activities exist between the environments. Aside from space applications, zero-gravity locomotion simulators may help medical researchers in the future with development of rehabilitative or therapeutic protocols for injured or ill patients. Zero-gravity locomotion simulators may be used as a ground-based test bed to support future missions for space exploration, and eventually may be used to simulate planetary locomotion in partial gravity environments, including the Moon and Mars. for the in-orbit commissioning phase. The tool can ingest raw data from the electronic ground support equipment (EGSE) developed by the instrument manufacturer and also from the nominal level 0 data provided by the SMOS ground segment data acquisition system. The software classifies the input data and applies the calibration procedures to produce calibrated visibility and brightness temperature. Most of the intermediate results, including raw data and calibration parameters, are saved in files for further analysis and processing. The processing has been optimized for speed so that the results are produced in near real time and it is designed to process large amount of data in a continuous way. Finally, the tool includes a user-friendly graphics interface that allows selecting specific data according to different parameters (baselines or receivers, modes of operation or others). 4 Conclusions During the SMOS In-Orbit Commissioning Phase, a number of tests will be carried out in order to check the payload MIRAS operation and fully characterize it in terms of data consistency and calibration parameters.
