With an objective to promote technological developments smoothly, surveys and discussions were given on how the improvements in intellectual foundations are worked out inside and outside the country. In surveying the status of improving the databases inside and outside the country, it was disclosed that the databases both inside and outside the country are arranged under the auspices of the governments. The reason for this is considered because the intellectual foundation improvement is difficult to be established as a business. In order to structure a framework to put together and publicize the data including those possessed by the private sector, surveys and discussions were given on the interest among titles to intellectual properties, contractual relationship between the database improving parties and the data providing parties, relationship with taxation systems, and how the incentives should be provided for publicizing the data. In discussing a model case to utilize data acquired by the private sector, it was concluded that assistance by the governments is indispensable for the organizations for structuring and maintaining the databases to continue their activities independently. Among the data measured and managed at the national level, problems in the publicizing method thereof were discussed especially on the data related to ocean information. (NEDO)

Focusing on the present status and future of coal demand in Central/South American countries and the coal trade between Central/South American countries and the U.S., the paper described the present status and future of coal demand there and the effects on Japan. Export of Colombian coal will amount to approximately 30-35 million tons in 2000. Venezuelan coal 10-20 million tons. The U.S. imported good-quality general coal low in sulfur content, 3.08 tons from Columbia and 1.39 tons from Venezuela. Coal export from the U.S. to Central/South America was mostly of raw material coal, 5 million tons in 1993 and 5.39 million tons in 1994. General coal was 180,000 tons. The U.S. has no plans of increasing US coal export to Central/South America. But it is safely predicted that Columbia and Venezuela will increase coal export to Europe in the future. It will bring about decrease in export of US coal to Europe, which connects with increasing pressure for the coal trade amount of Japan. 21 figs., 47 tabs.

The paper analyzes coal resource reserve in Australia, environmentally restrictive conditions of the coal resource development and effects on the supply, forecast of the supply ability of Australian coal as viewed cost competitivity, and the export market of Australian coal and supply forecast, and arranged subjects in the future long-term stable supply. Regions where Australian coal resource exists are mainly states of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland (Qld), which have 76 billion tons of the measured reserve. In the NSW state, about 50% of the coal reserve are not minable. Approximately 30%, 13% and 6% of the resource are restricted by the national park, farmland and others, respectively. The Qld state is little influenced by the national park and the native title land claim. The coal production in 1995 was 229 million tons, and the export 137 million tons. The production capacity was around 350 million tons including plans for expanding the existing coal mines and plans for new development of coal mines. Cost competitivity of Australian coal is higher than that of US western coal. Coal resource in Australia is huge in volume, existing near the seashore. Harbors for shipment can be easily expanded, and therefore there are basically no problems in increasing export. 27 refs., 41 figs., 47 tabs.

This report describes the effective utilization of coal ash discharged from general industry (general industry ash) as improving material of construction waste soil and deodorant for poultry industry. Coal ash is characterized by the pozzolan and self-hardening properties which are not shown in soil and sand. Coal ash having a large amount of free CaO in its composition has stronger such properties. Coal ash generated from fluidized bed combustor which is a kind of combustor of coal contains a large amount of free CaO, especially, resulting in the stronger such properties. On the other hand, coal ash has water and oil absorbing property due to its porous structure. To utilize these properties, the improving material of soft construction waste soil and deodorant for poultry industry have been selected. As a result of laboratory and field tests for the former, it was found that sufficient supporting force can be obtained. Since the protection of powder splash is required at the site, a humidification system has been developed, which can protect the splash by the humidification of 5%. The price between 500 and 1,000 yen/ton is suitable for the improving material of construction waste soil. The maximum price of the deodorant for poultry industry is 10 yen/kg. 14 refs., 40 figs., 49 tabs.

The paper surveyed the preparation of the coal transportation infrastructure, status of its running, economical efficiency, etc. in terms mainly of the trend of coal production/consumption in China, and coal railroad/water transportation and electric power transportation by mine-mouth power generation. From the survey, the following conclusions were obtained. As to the coal which China uses as a main energy for maintaining the present high economic growth as targeted, there will remain the coal transportation problem between production site (north and west) and consumption site (east and south) still in the future (in 2000 and 2010). China is now facing with a big turning point in a socioeconomic aspect. The advancing opening market policy brought steep rises in energy prices such as coal and electric power, which is affecting various fields. Further, the energy related laws, which were unprepared, are abruptly being prepared, and the environment for the introduction of foreign investment, which is expected to be accelerated, is being prepared. In the future, attention should be paid to environmental problems such as air pollution, acid rain and global warming. 48 figs., 96 tabs.

The paper reported the energy situation in Thailand, the present and future status of coal supply/demand, the present situation of environmental policy and air pollution prevention policy and problems concerning coal and the measures for solution, and a possibility of Japan`s cooperation. In Thailand, the total coal supply amount in 1992 is 16.079 million tons, which is 9.1% of all the primary energy supply amount. The country produces only a few amount of anthracite and subbituminous coal beside brown coal. The domestic coal equals brown coal, the production of which was 15.335 million tons in 1992, 13.9% of all the primary energy demand. Concerning brown coal, 79.7% of all the brown coal supply are for electric power use, and others for industrial use such as the cement industry. The remaining reserve in developed areas is 151.4 billion tons, and the proven reserve in undeveloped areas 756 million tons. The demand for import coal was 11.25 million tons in 1996, and is expected to be 201.73 million tons in 2000. The paper pointed out some problems arising from coal production and spread of coal utilization, and described measures to solve the problems and fields where there are possibilities of Japan`s cooperation. 36 refs., 44 figs., 73 tabs.

Japan has to prepare itself to behave accurately, and to stay technologically competitive, in the severe competition age to come in which it will fail to find leaders to follow. To fulfill this goal, Japan has to collect sufficient information and analyze it relative to the current state and future prospect of industrial technologies in Japan and overseas and various factors that will influence them, and to develop industrial technology related policies based firmly on scientific and theoretical foundations to be established using the thus-acquired knowledge. Under the circumstances, a survey is conducted of innovative, technological foundations, such as industrial technology related efforts in and out of Japan. The report consists of two volumes that cover what are described below. For the survey of technology related policies pursued in various countries abroad, literature and the like are investigated concerning technology related measures, budgets, and decision making processes in America, Britain, Germany, France, and the European Union, and the results are compiled so that their systems may be compared with each other. In the survey of Japan's technology related innovative systems, case studies are made about commodities over which Japan is relatively high in competitive power. Specifically, commodities manufactured by Japan's businesses and occupying 75% or more of the global share are investigated. (NEDO)

In consideration of the coal situation in the Asia/Pacific region, a study was made of effects of the expansion of coal trade by IPP on supply/demand of general coal in Asia. When aggregating increases in demand of general coal for electric power use in ten Asian counties, they will be an increase of 130.75 million tons in 2005 over 1997. Fifty nine percent of it is equivalent to the increase by IPP and exceeds the demand expanded by electric utilities operators. Further, a possibility is predicted of contracts and coal quality being different from until now. However, there will be a lot of cases in which plans of constructing power plants in Asia are not so developed as expected except Japan, Korea and Taiwan, and also the effect of the currency crisis starting in Thailand largely affects. In terms of the coal supply, countries which export general coal are only China and Indonesia. Indonesian coal is expanding its production and export rapidly and remarkably. The environmental control in Asia has been tightening, and the fuel selected by IPP is mainly coal rather than natural gas. 40 refs., 94 figs., 179 tabs.

For the purpose of contributing to the future coal industrial policy of Japan, an investigational study was conducted on the nature of coal as resource, the production/utilization status, policies of other countries, etc. The coal demand during the period of 1991 through 1995 rapidly increased in Asia, slightly rose in North America, decreased in East and West Europe, and largely declined in the former U.S.S.R. The energy demand showed a large growth rate with the economic growth in developing Asian countries in and after the 1980s as a background. The power demand which supports the economic growth will continue to improve. It connects with the coal demand in Asia, and the coal demand seems to rapidly increase. Further, the global warming issue became a great matter of concern in the 1990s. Coal, which emits more CO2 per unit calorific value than oil and natural gas, is not a powerful candidate for petroleum substituting energy as used to be regarded, but became a bad thing. Moreover, recently the economic stagnation in Asia which was triggered by the currency crisis has long been continuing, and it started to appear that the coal consumption will possibly fall very short of the prediction. The future is unclear. 20 refs., 25 figs., 39 tabs.

LCA (life cycle assessment) is known as one of the techniques for assessing reasonable use of energy considering environment. Usefulness of LCA was examined by checking the consistency between the assessment result on refrigerators by LCA and ISO standards. LCA can digitize the data on energy substances, wastes and emission of the whole system. LCA is useful for effective use and control of resources, and to clarify the reduction chance of environmental impacts. However, the framework is necessary to estimate the accuracy of assessment technique for every category, and the reliability of influence assessment. Like a risk assessment for environmental damages, identification of discharge sources beyond the assessment function of potentials is difficult. As the viewpoint of the whole life cycle is important, assessment of local damages is difficult. The complementary use of LCA and other tools about sustainable development is important. The comparison result between ISO provisions and this LCA case study showed that this concrete research report can play a role as text book for the ISO technique. 74 refs., 38 figs., 45 tabs.

Studies are under way for the nation-wide buildup of a network of METPV data, new standard meteorological data resembling the HASP data, for the time-based simulation of the output of photovoltaic power generation systems. There is a method of preparing hourly data covering a long period of time for computer processing for the determination of the average hourly power generation level, which, however, will be unrealistic because of the enormity of calculation work involved. Hence: the concept of standardized meteorological data, which involves the specification of typical years after examining the data covering a long period and the preparation of the data of the years for computer processing. In the METPV setup, three types of data are prepared: data for the year of the average insolation, data for the year of insufficient insolation, and data for the year of excess insolation. Next, for each of the twelve months, the year of the average insolation is found. When the twelve pieces of data for the twelve months (of different years) are combined, an artificially constructed year results, with each of the twelve months having the average insolation. A technique has been developed for smoothing the discontinuity between the months. Forty observation spots were built in fiscal 1995, and 150 spots will have been prepared across the country by the end of fiscal 1996. 6 refs., 4 figs.

As to the research on the superconductor manifestation mechanism, Y123 monocrystal which was partially replaced with Zn and Ni was manufactured, and it was made clear that the addition of these impurities greatly change anisotropy of superconductors. It was made clear that instability of lattice and magnetism is included in high temperature superconductor. Also made clear was an important role in the Nb/Ba replacement in existence of magnetic flux melting phase transfer and the magnetic field induced pinning effect. The manufacture of Y123 bicrystal membrane was successful by the liquid phase epitaxy method. The manufacture of non-copper base K-Bi-O new superconductor was successful by the ultra-high pressure synthesis method. The stabilized process was established for large size crystals of 15-20mm square in Y base and of 20-25mm square in Nd base. Also successful was the growth by LPE method of crystal with thick membrane of 20mm x 20mm x 10{mu}m on the MgO monocrystal substrate. The non-bicrystalization of Y base Nd base monocrystal was successful, and the peak phenomenon control in Jc-H was found out. By neutron irradiation, the acquisition magnetic field of 3.7T at 77K was achieved using bulk Y base 123 material with diameter of 3cm. And, the critical current density of 60,000 A/cm{sup 2} was achieved at 77K and 3T. (NEDO)

Development of nenroactive materials to improve neuronal defects is one of the most important subjects in Japan that will soon become a aging society. In this project, basic research for neuroactive molecule was performed to develop technology for neuronal regeneration, regulation of synaptic activity and interface between artificial surface and living neurons. A novel neurite promoting factor was discovered and its cDNA was cloned. Mutagenesis in vitro showed that a functional region of this factor located in a polypeptide of less than 50 aminoacids. Using neuronal culture, synapse formation was found to depend on two modes of activities and long-lasting synaptic potentiation was demonstrated to depend on a macromolecules released from pre- or postsynaptic neurons. To regulate nervous activities, photoactivated caged-peptide was developed and confirmed to change in affinity to its receptor. Neurons were cultured on substrates paterned by microlithography. This paper describes the technology development by which biomass is produced by treatment of pollutants using microalgae, and is recycled. A bioreactor system has been developed, in which microalgal biomass can be obtained through the effective treatment of CO2 and NOx using microalgae having ability of increase under the severe condition with simultaneous flow of CO2 and NOx. A new method has been also developed for separating and recovering the microalgae. Materials, such as glucose, glycerol, acetic acid, and lactic acid, were produced from the obtained biomass through physico-chemical and biological treatments. These materials can be converted into ethanol and hydrogen. For this treatment and recycling system, functions as a part of natural material recycling were considered to be most significant. Development of an analysis and evaluation method of an impact of this system on the natural environment is also tried. 1 fig.

Researchers specializing in technologies of magnetism or semiconductor were drafted from the industrial, official, and academic circles, who conducted hearings, patent investigations, overseas surveys, and the like, concerning spintronics. Collected in this report are the outline of the research and development of spintronic device technology, its current state and tasks and its importance from social and economic viewpoints, and the strategy that Japan should follow in the research and development of the technology. Important spintronic device technologies now attracting attention are mentioned below. The nonvolatile magnetic memory device MRAM (magnetic random access memory) is supposed to be the device which will enjoy practical application first among like devices. It is expected that the spin conduction device will lead to novel functions when the possibilities of the spin-dependent electric conduction phenomenon are further pursued. It is hoped that the spin optical device will be used as a light isolator, light spin logic device, field induced variable wavelength laser device, spin laser device, high-speed light switch, and so forth. It is necessary to watch the development of a spin-aided quantum computer which is still at the stage of basic study. (NEDO)

For the development of working conditions fit for aged people and devices for them to operate, their visual function and behavioral characteristics are measured and analyzed. In the study of visual functions, 50 people from local cities and regions and another 50 from Osaka and its neighboring cities are subjected to measurement regarding visual acuity required in daily life, color discrimination, dark adaptation, glare, and the like. In the study of performing characteristics, 500 people are subjected to measurement regarding the scope of movement of upper limbs, their reach, and skillfulness with which the people can move fingers. When brightness, luminance, and contrast are caused to change relative to letters and background, aging is found to exert a great influence on the ease of reading, dark adaptation, and glare. As for the upper limb work range and reachability and the skillfulness in finger movement, it is found that aging narrows down the tolerant work area, lowers the working pace, and greatly affects skillfulness depending on the device operating method, all these disclosing actualities of difference attributable to age and sex. Concerning the device operating position and the ease of device operating force application, new measuring and evaluating methods are worked out, and correlations between the contents of operation and the operating position are seized. To carry out LCA in ISO-14040, inventory analysis (IA) is the basic. For studying arrangement of public data to carry out IA, collection work was done of background data which are indirectly concerned with copying machine. First, methods to make inventory data (ID) which are thinkable in the present situation were prepared, and items of emitted matters to be collected were set up in relation to the impact assessment method. Secondly, scenarios of each stage of life cycle of copying machine were set up, and virtual data on the material/energy consumption amount were arranged. Based on this, a method was further studied for making ID of the parts used in electric power, iron/steel, plastics, and copying machine. Third, based on the above-mentioned study results, ID was actually made, and a possibility was studied of making inventory in life cycle of copying machine. Moreover, the state of the automobile LCA carried out at Stuttgart University was examined. At last, the paper summed up subjects of and future study methods for the inventory making method. 2 refs., 25 figs., 77 tabs.

Various latest technical developments were surveyed for the cost-effective installation of power distribution cables under pavements, and their applicabilities were demonstrated with the evaluation of their cost-reduction effects. Cables in conventional vinyl protection tubes could be buried only 30cm under pavements, and in such case, the cost was reduced to 51% of those of conventional methods. As the results of soil tests, excavated soil over 80% was reusable through coarse screening. Underground radar technique to explore buried pipes from the surface was detectable several pipes buried 1.5-2.0m underground, although some problems in precision were found. The improvement of reinforced concrete man-hole structures to minimize the volume of excavated soil indicated the cost reduction of nearly 20%. The application of these techniques to the installation of cables was expected to ultimately halve the total civil engineering cost. 21 refs., 130 figs., 46 tabs.

Researches have been made to increase density of 200,000-kW class generator and to increase capacity of 600,000-kW class generator necessary for putting superconducting generator into practical use. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 2000. In the study of increasing densities of superconductors and field windings, strands were fabricated, in which aging heat treatment conditions, number of aging, and processing degrees between each aging were varied, to increase the critical current of Nb-Ti strand, wherein as high critical current as corresponding to about 90% of the target was obtained. Possibility of increasing the critical current with the final processing degree in the range of 4 to 5 was verified from the relationship between the final processing degree and the critical current. In the study of increasing capacities of superconductors and field windings, findings were acquired on enhancement of conductor stability and reduction in AC loss, with regard to superconductor strands well balanced in the two elements. Prospects were obtained in achieving the AC loss of 200 kW/m{sup 3} in the targeted superconductor. The residual resistance ratio was found to be 200, showing sufficiently high value, and sufficient function was verified in the stabilized copper. In the research of design technologies, primary basic design was performed. (NEDO)

This paper illustrates the field experiment results in which micro-gravity survey was applied to investigation of very shallow basement structure between a few m and 10 m. Its applicability was discussed. In principle, the micro-gravity survey was conducted at the measuring points in a grid with 20 m pitch. Measuring points of 174 were used. The gravity system used for the measurements is an automatic gravimeter CG-3M made by the Scintrex. Survey results of P-wave reflection method conducted at the site using a vibrator focus were used as control data of micro-gravity survey. Consequently, change in the thickness of surface layer (earth filling) shallower than the depth of -10 m could be grasped as a plane. It was found that the micro-gravity survey is a useful method for the investigation of very shallow basement structure. Survey results by the reflection method could contribute to the determination of trend face at filtration and construction of density model as well as the geologic interpretation of gravity anomaly. As a result, reliability of micro-gravity survey and reflection method could be enhanced, mutually. 3 refs., 8 figs.

The deep-sea manganese nodule mining system in this report collects efficiently and continuously a large quantity of manganese nodules in existence in the 5,000m-deep sea floor. The aim of the project is to develop and build an experimental system for a real mining machine and to perform a comprehensive marine test to find out if such a real machine is technologically and economically feasible. The system under this project is divided into four systems, which are a nodule mining system, nodule lifting system, nodule handling system, and a measurement control system. The nodule mining system travels on the sea bottom efficiently collecting manganese nodules and forwarding them into the nodule lifting system. Only a few systems of this kind have so far been developed, however, and therefore much endeavor needs to be exerted for the development of technologies involved. The nodule lifting system is divided into a pump lift unit, air lift unit, and a nodule lifting pipe. The pump lift unit and air lift unit elevate manganese nodules supplied from the nodule collecting unit to the sea surface. The nodule lifting pipe provides a passage for nodules to run through upward. (NEDO)

The paper reports trends of energy, economy, and the environmental field in Vietnam. The economy of Vietnam has indicated a powerful growth in all the sectors for the first nine months of fiscal 1994. The amount of industrial products showed a growth of 12.2%, and the agriculture is supported by a growth in cash crop, despite of the damage to rice growing caused by the flood. The government announced that they expected a GDP growth rate of 8.5% in fiscal 1994 over the target of 8%. However, a hope that the government wants the inflation rate not exceeding 10% was already given up in October. The government holds a financial deficit totaling 636 million dollars. The government planned to supplement the deficit partially by increasing revenue and partially by support from overseas, but in both cases the fund was short. The trend in the finance/bank sector since August indicates that the money market is appearing. Vietnam established the foreign currency interbank market. Moreover, the government decided on establishment of the stock market up to the beginning of 1995.

The new technique, which continuously produced the monodispersion oil-in-water (0/W) emulsion using the crossflow type silicon microchannel substrate, was developed. On the silicon monocrystal substrate, the watercourse as the liquid of the continuous phase flowed was produced, and the column of the equal slit of the size in both walls of the watercourse was precisely processed. By closing the upper part in the slit by the clamp of the flat glass board in the microchannel substrate, the microchannel column was formed. Through the microchannel, the oil droplet in which the size was even was formed by sending out the oil (triolein) in the water (0.3wt% sodium lauryl sulfate aqueous solution) of continuous phase which is flowing in respect of the watercourse. The size of the oil droplet is greatly dependent on the structure of the microchannel regulated by microchannel width, microchannel height and terrace length (the even part of which the microchannel exit was equipped). Monodispersion emulsion of 16,20 and 48 {mu}m at the average droplet diameter was formed by using microchannel substrate of the three types of which the structure differs. Droplet diameter decreased, when the substrate which formed large droplet of 48 {mu}m in which the water current quantity is 1.4x10{sup -2}mLmin{sup -1} was used, when the flow rate increased. However, there was no a flow rate at droplet diameter, even if it was made to change from 1.4x10{sup -2} to 2.4mLmin{sup -1}, 16 {mu}m 20 {mu}m small change. In all cases, the droplet size distribution was narrow, and the geometry standard deviation was under 1.03. (translated by NEDO)

This paper introduces the circumstances and purpose of establishing the Basic Research Associate for Innovated Coal Utilization (BRAIN-C) Program started in October 1995, and the summary of the results therefrom in fiscal 1995. Although development of coal utilization technologies has been implemented over a number of years, there are many problems still requiring solutions. Early realization has been urged on diversification of coal utilization, acceleration of technological development and diversification of coal types. In order to achieve these goals, the necessity was recognized afresh on not only the hardwares, but also on basic technologies in terms of software which can identify properties of coals, systematize different reactions, and estimate reactions, fluidity and heat transmission of coals. Therefore, receiving a subsidy from the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, a research and development program to be implemented jointly by industries, administrative agencies and academic societies had been started with a five-year plan for the time being. With the activities for the program such as collecting 50 to 100 types of coals and supplying them to researchers, the program had been accelerated in fiscal 1995 on a large number of themes and results therefrom, including fundamental properties and thermo-chemical reactions. 2 figs., 4 tabs.

Described herein are the survey/research works for development of new cities in Hokkaido and energy systems therefor. The energy system is characterized by `heat/power cogeneration,` known for its high energy efficiency, for development of a new city in a cold district and effective utilization of energy on the assumption that a power generation system is installed in or near the city. The heat produced will be used for improvement of urban amenity, e.g., snow thawing, in addition to air-conditioning and production of hot water. The centralized system has a cogeneration plant as the main heat source and an auxiliary source, e.g., waste heat from garbage incineration or sewage disposal. The dispersed system depends on only cogeneration. These systems will save energy by approximately 13 and 11%, respectively, and both abate CO2 emissions by 20%, from those associated with the conventional system. The retail heat price is set at 10 yen/Mcal, 30% lower than the current level. 12 figs., 5 tabs.

Phase 1 survey in fiscal 1996 was conducted based on `Agreement on the comprehensive survey of a coal transportation system in South Sumatra` concluded between NEDO and the Ministry of Mine and Energy in Indonesia. In the survey, conducted were collection of data on coal fields and site surveys, collection of data on inland transportation and site surveys, collection of data on harbors and site surveys, and worked out were a simplified database and a coal transportation plan by optimization of the coal chain system. The area for survey is the periphery of the Musi River of South Sumatra. The results of the simulation by LP models were as follows: When the coal of Bukit Asam coal mine is $25/t in price, only coal of 5500Kcal/kg is profitable, and when $27/t in price, coal of 4500Kcal/kg also becomes profitable. This shows that if the coal is of good quality, it can pay arriving at Suralaya, independent of the distance of transportation. 47 figs., 63 tabs.

The aim is to create inorganic materials with their functions well harmonized and with their reliability remarkably improved, and efforts are made to establish basic technologies with which structural control may be carried out simultaneously for multiple layers in in-process products through positive utilization of various chemical reactions in the materials synthesizing process. This fiscal year's achievements are stated below. A low-temperature pressure nitriding method is developed in which nitriding reaction directly involves the metal aluminum compact for conversion into ceramics, and an aluminum sintered body is produced capable of high thermal conduction of not less than 170w/mk with the original compact shape retained. By a heat treatment in a high-temperature pressure nitriding atmosphere, a success is attained in producing a silicon nitride ceramic body enhanced (150w/mk) in thermal conduction. It is clarified that the microwave-aided selective heating technology works effectively in enhancing the particle growth rate in a liquid-phase sinter system, and a success is won in increasing strength by virtue of the formation of particle-growing particles. This paper reports the study results on manufacturing of low-cost Si substrates by continuous casting method in fiscal 1994. (1) On manufacturing of ingots of 16 piece size, the ingot of nearly 170kg was manufactured by batch process using the Si melt injection unit prepared in last year. (2) On oxygen and carbon contents in wafers, the contents were measured by FT-IR after slicing of the ingot. As a result, the oxygen and carbon contents could be successfully reduced to the targets of 10ppma and 5ppma or less, respectively. (3) The resistivity distribution of the ingot ranged over the target of 1-2ohm-cm. (4) Cells of 100 {times} 100mm{sup 2} wide and 350{mu}m thick were verified by in-house evaluation process. Although lower cell conversion efficiency was found at the center top of the ingot, a vertical efficiency stability was nearly sufficient as a whole. (5) On the crystal growth unit prepared in fiscal 1994, any problems were not found on automatic driving and vibration during moving. 8 figs.

A highly heat-conducting AlN ceramic substrate is developed for the cooling of semiconductor integrated circuit devices and power controlling semiconductor devices. In the development of a low-temperature sinterable ceramic texture, a sintering assistant is selected. In this process various assistants are tested for the effect of their presence on the occurrence of AlN oxidation and on the magnitude of standard energy for aluminate compound formation. The volatility at high temperatures of the components of the assistants are also examined. The sintering assistant developed for this project (mixture of Y2O3, CaO, LaB6, and WO3) is used in the sintering of an AlN material powder developed by The Dow Chemical Co., and then it is demonstrated that highly heat-conducting AlN substrates are mass-produced by continuous sintering at 1600degC in a nitrogen atmosphere, the product having a relative density of 100%, average heat conductivity of 154W/mK, bend resisting strength of 440MPa, and a fracture toughness value of 3.8MPam{sup 1/2}. 6 refs., 92 figs., 10 tabs.

With an objective to make clear the basic information about aged and handicapped persons requiring welfare goods upon the development thereof, this survey performed a questionnaire survey to business entities performing design, development, improvement and fitting of welfare goods. The questionnaire survey selected 879 business entities involved in manufacture and sale of the welfare goods. The effective reply recovery rate was 19.3%. The questions had the data contents required by products classified into body dimensions, motion capability, sensory functions, and work capability, asking to state data contents required for each item, reasons for the needs, and data sources. The data source currently utilized reveals that most of the replied enterprises utilize data derived from the company's own measurements, developments and experiences. The contents thereof indicate that the data are too old, the data contents do not match the current situation, and no required data are available. In designing, developing and fitting the welfare goods, the required data may not necessarily be obtained, whereas improvement in the database is strongly desired. (NEDO)

The paper grasps the present situation of economy and industry in Kazakhstan and studies a policy for developing the industrial machine manufacturing industry of the country. Since the independence in 1992, the country is now at the great turning point in politics, economy, society and industry. The country is forced to convert from the industrial structure of one local area where much of its own discretion had not been given under the economy system of power centralization to the industrial structure which meets the international economic market system as an independent country. Making good use of agricultural and industrial property in the former U.S.S.R., the country needs to export energy resource like oil, natural gas and coal, and abundant ore resource like iron and non-ferrous metal, which were added with values. As the technical base for it, fostering and strengthening of the industrial machine manufacturing industry is important. At present, the situation is that because of the economic sluggishness, the country cannot manufacture domestically even basic mechanical parts and simply-manufactured parts which are required by the domestic energy industry, machine manufacturing industry, and other industries. The technical program to be proposed by Japan is planned to be worked out later based on the basic research made in fiscal 1993. 6 figs., 14 tabs.

In order to propose fundamental research and development of AC superconducting power apparatuses, the FY 1998 efforts were directed to studies on the effects of introducing superconducting apparatuses, making proposals of development programs, literature (including patent publications) surveys on trends of research and development at home and abroad, and making proposals for technological breakthroughs. Results of the studies for evaluating economic efficiency of these apparatuses and the effects of their introduction indicate that the promising apparatuses for eventual commercialization include superconducting cables, current limiters, field power generators, transformers and flywheels. The superconducting cables are expected to greatly reduce losses and hence CO2 emissions. The superconducting current limiters are promising means to control short-circuit current increase in the trunk power systems in which they are used. The superconducting transformers are expected to reduce losses and hence CO2 emissions. The project of fundamental research and development of AC superconducting power apparatuses has proposed the fundamental technological research themes aimed at development of the elementary techniques prerequisite for realizing these 3 types of apparatuses and reflection of the required apparatus specifications in development of the cable materials. The hardware which supports IT is composed of information processing (MPUs and memories), information communication (input/output and communication) and information storage as the three basic elements. This project studies development of the basic technologies for realization of tera-bit (1TB/in{sup 2}) class information storage, in order to cope with drastically increased volume of information as a result of progress of the IT revolution. An HDD (hard disk device) will be the sole device which can correspond to required large-capacity, high-speed storage. However, realization of the recording density for 1TB class storage needs materials and controlling technologies at the atomic and molecular levels, because all of the basic technologies therefor, e.g., those for recording medium, head device and positioning mechanisms, are characterized by nm-order technologies. In other words, it is important to promote the research and development activities for the technologies for three-dimensionally configuring/controlling the atoms, processing magnetic materials at the nm level, and superhigh-speed devices. The concerted efforts by the industrial, government and academic sectors are required for quickly realizing the technological breakthroughs, which need advanced processes based on new principles and development facilities. The aim is to develop basic technologies relating to 3-dimensional circuit devices with an ultrahigh-density accumulation of functions therein for the embodiment of ultra-small high-performance data processing devices or artificial brain-like multiple-function data processing devices. To be developed are laminate-structure devices which have an ultrahigh-density accumulation of logic and memory functions or a complex accumulation of functions including signal and sensor functions. In the 1st phase, importance is attached to the development of a multilayer crystalline structure, which is the most elementary in the development of 3-dimensional circuit devices, and of processing technologies for them. Propositions are made and analyses are conducted relating to the enlargement of exposure region in synchrotron radiation lithography, development of a maskless beam process of a resolution of 0.1{mu}m, development of a focused ion beam device, etc. Recrystallization methods using a laser beam or a linear electron beam are developed for the growth of multilayer crystals, and are proved to be effective. The application feasibility of a flat deposition dry process etc. to laminate processing technologies is demonstrated. Concerning integration technologies, some laminated circuit devices are experimentally fabricated, and their behavior is determined. The goals of the 1st phase are found achieved. (NEDO)

Basic technologies are established that equip polymeric materials (insulators in general) with conductivity similar to that of metals for the realization of novel conducting materials characterized by light weight, high resistance to corrosion, and ease of machining, and for the manufacture of novel electrical/electronic materials having new functions different from those of conventionally used metals. The aims are to realize a conductivity of 10{sup 5}S/cm or more, to manufacture materials sufficiently stable when left in the ordinary or inert atmosphere, and to manufacture materials which may be machined into proper shapes as required in the industry. The results of the 10-year-long development endeavor greatly contribute to the creation of high-level materials, the systematization of technologies, and the elucidation of the conducting mechanism. In relation to polymeric materials, in particular, a new technology is developed that equips, with high reproducibility, polymeric materials with conductivity similar to that of silver or copper; a graphitic material is created for the first time provided with conductivity superior to that of metals; and conducting polymeric materials are equipped with an easy-to-machine feature. A great contribution is accomplished to the production of superconductivity in organic charge-transfer complex crystals and to the elucidation of the conducting mechanism. (NEDO)

In Japan with its rapidly aging society, fundamental technologies are required for the development of artificial nerves substituting for or supporting damaged ones, and ultimately constituting artificial neurons based on the knowledge of the brain functions at the molecular and cellular levels. This study defines the fundamental technologies which would be required for the development in the area, and further, evaluates the potential of the technologies to develop the novel industry. The brain function is closely related to the activity in neuronal circuits. In order to repair injured nerves and to develop the advanced technologies of electronics for helping impaired neuronal functions, the most important and urgent is to understand how to work the neuronal circuit system in the brain. Based on these viewpoints, new methodological approaches would make it possible to relieve neural impairment in the sensory input system and the motor system by the use of electronic circuits. They also would improve rehabilitation after injury, and treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson`s disease. These advances surely create the new types of industry seeds in near future. 77 refs., 29 figs., 2 tabs.

This paper shows the impact of the irradiation from an additional light source during the deposition of hydrogenated amorphous silicon by photo-CVD deposition. Using a mercury sensitized photo-CVD process from Disilan (Si {sub 2} H {sub 6}) and hydrogen, silicon was deposited. A 40W low pressure mercury lamp was applied as the light source. A portion of the substrate was in addition irradiated using an Xg-He lamp through a thermal filter. Irradiation of the substrate using only Xg-He lamp produced no deposition, since this light has a wavelength which is too long to produce the SiH {sub 3}-radicals needed for Si deposition. The additional Xg-He light source was discovered to cause an increased thickness of deposited a-Si:H film and a transmission of the band structure. The reasons of these are considered that the influence of irradiation is not limited to film thickness, but that irradiation also impacts the composition of the a-Si:H film so as to cause a reduction in the hydrogen content. 10 figs., 1 tab.

Research and development was carried out involving fine ceramic sintered body textural structure evaluation methods for the development of process technologies for achieving higher quality and lower cost. Studies centered about a method for evaluating coarse pores and coarse grains in sintered bodies, relations between sintered body fracture strength and textural structure, and the standardization of evaluation methods. As the result, an evaluation method for observing pore structures in a sintered body flake specimen under an optical microscope and another for observing coarse grains under a polarization microscope were proposed. As for the effect of coarse defects on the fracture strength of ceramics, it was demonstrated experimentally and theoretically that coarse defects several tens of micrometers in size greatly affected the fracture strength. Research and development has been performed on a system technology for the human cooperating and coexisting type robot that can perform various types of works substituting human hands. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1999. In developing a high-function hand, development and fabrication were executed on a device to teach four finger holding actions that correspond to the enhancement in action stability and control responsiveness of the four finger hand and to positions and attitudes of objects. In fabricating the robot platforms, single platform tests and remotely controlled platform connection tests were performed, which demonstrated the functions as an integrated system. In developing libraries for topography adaptive three-dimensional basic walking actions, development was carried out on libraries that correspond to menus for direct advance on a flat land, slewing, and walking on staircases and irregular land. It was found that control closer to that for actually usable robot is possible by considering time delay in articulate control when simulation was performed using the testing robot body. In the study and survey of robot proliferation, development plans were presented that take into consideration the social influence, technological factors, and cost need adaptability. (NEDO)

In the Asian region, for the purpose of grasping effects of both economic growth and effective energy consumption, an analytical tool added with a computational function was developed with the interindustrial relations table as database for the analysis of the present situation and the simulational analysis. In the analysis of the present situation, changes between the two time-points, 1985 and 1990, were analyzed using the developed energy consumption table and the CO2 emission table. The energy consumption amount is increasing with the growing economy. However, the energy unit consumption is decreasing in countries except Korea, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. The trend is that the energy consumption is becoming effective and the CO2 emission amount is decreasing. As an example of simulating the introduction effect of energy saving technology, the simulation was conducted on the three: iron steel, paper/pulp, and cement in Indonesia. As a result, the decrease in energy consumption was shown in paper/pulp by 48%, in cement by 16%, and in iron/steel by 16%. The same was also indicated in CO2 emission. (NEDO)

This paper describes the achievement in fiscal 1997 of analyzing practical application of a technology to manufacture solar cell silicon raw materials. Silicon consumption for solar cells in fiscal 1997 has increased to 2000-ton level, and the supply has been very tight. For drastic improvement in the demand and supply situation, development of SOG-Si manufacturing technology and its early practical application are desired. The development of the NEDO mass-production technology using melting and refining has completed constructing the process facilities in fiscal 1998, and will enter the stage of operational research. However, insufficiency in the basic data about behavior of impurities is inhibiting the development. In the substrate manufacturing technology, discussions have shown progress on use of diversifying silicons outside the standard by using the electromagnetic casting process. For slicing and processing the substrates, development of a high-performance slicing equipment and automatic rough rinsing machine is under way. Properties required on silicon raw materials vary considerably widely because of difference in cell making systems and conditions, which is attributable to unknown impurity behavior. When 1GW production is assumed, the cell module manufacturing cost is calculated as 137 yen/W, for which low-cost mass production for its realization, slicing productivity enhancement, and cost reduction are required. The paper also describes site surveys in overseas countries. (NEDO)

For rational use of energy resources, the process technology which allows harmonization and multiplication of conflicting characteristics was developed for development of new ceramic system materials. This paper summarizes the result in fiscal 1997. On a structural reaction process among creation technologies of ultra-reliable structure, study was made on structure control and hot-working technology through atmosphere control in ceramics synthesis. On basic technology for analysis and evaluation, study was made on the effect of particle bridging on strengthening and toughening of ceramic materials. Study was also made on a toughness expression mechanism, FEM model analysis of particle bridging, and crack growth resistance of ceramics. On control of solid solution precipitation, new alumina ceramics with high strength, hardness and wear resistance was obtained by transgranularly precipitating nano-size particles from a fine-grain high-density matrix through an improved particle formation process. Its toughness was considerably improved by controlling grain shape and grain boundary structure. A precipitation mechanism was also discussed. 89 refs., 107 figs., 14 tabs.

The goal is to develop basic technologies to build an SiC device capable of service amid high-temperature surroundings for the advancement and optimization of combustion control systems. In an SiC semiconductor, the Si-C bond is broken when irradiated with ions, and this makes the occurrence of thermal oxidation easy to occur. In the study to form SiC into single-crystal substrates, a substrate with warpage of 10 micrometers or less and surface coarseness of 10 nanometers or less is realized. In the development of sensor technologies, the high-speed CVD (chemical vapor deposition) method is applied for the growth of crystals further on a 3C-SiC layer epitaxially grown by MBE (molecular beam epitaxy) surface control, which improves on layer characteristics. Element technologies are developed for the construction of a 3-terminal element (FET: field effect transistor), which is for the construction of a high-temperature, high-speed SiC device. An effort is made at achieving 3C-SiC hetero-epitaxial growth, etc., on a 3-inch Si substrate using an SiC crystal film formation experimenting apparatus, which aims at constructing a control device. Concerning the combustion control system, the relations between the air/fuel ratio and the emission spectra of radicals OH, CH, and C2 in a flame are made clear. Also referred to are the basic studies being conducted at research institutes such as universities and a survey of technological trends abroad.

It is intended to develop thin film solar cells capable of mass production with high photo-stability and at low cost. Thus, the objective of the present research is to analyze the growth process of micro crystal silicon based thin films, the crystal being a high quality silicon crystal based material, and develop technology to manufacture high-quality micro crystal silicon thin films based on the findings therefrom. It was found that, when silicon source is available in cathode, pure hydrogen plasma forms micro crystal silicon films by using the plasma as a result of the chemical transportation effect from the silicon source. It was revealed that the crystal formation due to hydrogen plasma exposure is performed substantially by the crystals forming the films due to the chemical transportation effect, rather than crystallization in the vicinity of the surface. The crystal formation under this experiment was concluded that the formation takes place during film growth accompanied by diffusion of film forming precursors on the surface on which the film grows. According to the result obtained so far, the most important issue in the future is particularly the control of crystal growing azimuth by reducing the initially formed amorphous layer by controlling the stress in the initial phase for film formation, and by controlling the film forming precursors. Out of the development of technology to arrange the aquatic environment using phenomena of microorganism fixation on carbon fiber soft textures, the paper stated the fiscal 1997 result. On carbon fibers in a state of swaying in water, microorganisms in water fix in an amazingly large quantity. A catalog was compiled of 58 kinds of carbon fabrics trially woven and knitted. When carbon fiber is used as activated sludge carrier, activity of microorganism lasts more than one year. Only a little amount of surplus sludge is generated. The fixed microorganisms are more active in case of carbon fiber than in case of nylon and polyester fibers. Fiber texture models of carbon fiber fixing activated sludge groups were proposed. By pump operation, the water flow inside/outside microorganism groups is being accelerated. Several new strains of bacillus carboniphilus were isolated/identified from soil and marsh. To grasp relationships of characteristics among three elements such as the state of aquatic environment, fiber, and microorganism group, the experiment was prepared. Preliminary work is conducted to derive a simple equation for facility design, and experimental directions to obtain design conditions were proposed. 6 refs., 166 figs., 47 tabs.

Research, development and evaluation were performed with an objective of establishing the basic technology related to light-reactive materials that control the structures and status of aggregation of molecules by using actions of light, and can be used for ultra-high density recording, high resolution indication and light switches. In elucidating the mechanism of light deterioration reaction of photochromic molecules, it was disclosed that 6-nitrospirobenzopyran has the light deterioration caused from the excitation triplet state. This disclosure presents a possibility of preventing the light deterioration. New derivatives that show photochromism were synthesized, and thin films were produced by using the LB process. This indicates a possibility of producing the photochromic materials as the high multiplex recording material. With regard to PHB materials, an evaluation technology having spectrum resolution of the world's highest level was established and measurements were performed. The first term has performed research and development placing emphasis on that 'the basic study on membrane separation is to be performed systematically to elucidate governing factors in membrane separation'. With respect to water/ethanol separation by using the penetration gasifying method, it was indicated that excellent separation performance can be exhibited by using natural polymers having sugar chain skeleton as a raw material, and by controlling the membrane structure by means of membrane manufacturing methods. For enhancement of performance in water selective permeation type separation membrane, it was shown experimentally that it is important to select a membrane suitable for the object of separation and a separation method that uses the selected membrane. Regarding the water/ethanol separation, it was shown theoretically that the penetration gasifying method can save more energy than the conventional distillation method, where the development target was presented. It was recognized that impregnation type liquid membrane using crown ether can separate amino acid optical isomers. High separation performance was obtained in carbon monoxide/nitrogen separation by using fluid carrier that uses cuprous iodine/1-methyl imidazole. (NEDO)

The Saitama prefectural government has been conducting basement structure exploration using the spatial autocorrelation method by dividing the entire plain area into meshes, for the purpose of improving the accuracy of estimating large-scale seismic damages. This paper reports the result of explorations on meshes in the east-west direction in the central part of Saitama Prefecture. The present exploration was intended on ten meshes in the east-west direction along the north latitude 36-degree line. The number of exploration points is 13 comprising three points on the hilly area bordering on the eastern edge of the Kanto mountainous area and ten points on the plain area. The arrangement constitutes a traverse line with a total distance of about 33 km from the west edge (Hatoyama-machi in Saitama Prefecture) to the east edge (Noda City in Chiba Prefecture). The phase velocities were estimated from the result of the array microtremor observations using the spatial autocorrelation method applied with the FET. The phase velocities were used to estimate underground structures by using an inverse analysis. As a result, detailed two-dimensional S-wave velocity structures were revealed on the traverse line. The velocity cross section expresses change in the basement structures with sufficient resolution, and at the same time the information is judged highly harmonious with existing deep boring data and the result of artificial earthquake exploration. 15 refs., 6 figs.

Activities were conducted for (1) proposing that some items in software comply with a standard format to be commonly used by plural personal computer programs in the field of the key technology of color image management and for (2) placing before ISO (International Organization for Standardization) a standardization proposal and a standard format proposal involving characters and character baselines in the field of research and development of standard data for diversification of international information interchange. Under Item (1), submission of a proposal was adjourned because the standard of color expression in Asian countries was insufficient and involved many problems requiring careful attention. The problems were whether the color names were suitable for the users, that the color names other than those specified by JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) Z8102 were equivocal and needed proper notations, and whether color names to use with displays or the like were to be defined independently from JIS. Under Item (2), the problem of metric information standardization surfaced because it was supposed that mixing JIS fonts with other countries' fonts would give rise to problems. As for the character size, it is 10 points, more or less, in all the countries and therefore it does not make difficult the exchange of information under the Web environments. The results will be reported and explained to the departments concerned and to the Asian countries. (NEDO)

(1) On electromagnetic casting/once FZ bath method, a Si single crystal of 600mm long was successfully obtained by improvement of power source frequency and furnace parts. High carbon content resulted in no single crystal including solids. In undoped electromagnetic casting ingots, resistivities over 1500ohm-cm were obtained because of effective preventive measures from contaminants. (2) On electromagnetic melting CZ method, since vibration and temperature control of melt surface by magnetic shield was insufficient for stable pulling of single crystals, its practical use was hopeless. (3) On electron beam melting CZ method, a Si single crystal of 25mm in diameter was obtained by preventive measures from evaporation of Si and influence of deposits, and improved uniform deposition distribution in a furnace. The oscillation circuit constant of power source, and water-cooling copper crucible structure were also analyzed for the optimum design of electromagnetic melting furnaces. 3 figs., 1 tab.

The thermal deformation increased with carrier concentration. As the observation result on change in lattice strain of heated TCO films by high-temperature X-ray diffraction, lattice strain was largely affected by thermal expansion. (2) On development of the low-temperature heat treatment method of TCO films, a technological prospect was obtained for fabrication of low-resistance TCO films by heat treatment without strength deterioration of tempered TCO substrates. (3) On development of cost reduction technology, the large-area CVD equipment was devised on the basis of the inline tempering method which tempers substrate glass by air cooling after formation of SnO2 film as fabrication method of tempered TCO. The TCO substrate tempered by air cooling could endure the drop test of 227g and 1.5m. 5 figs., 1 tab.

To investigate applicability of the spatial autocorrection method which is a microtremors exploration method for the estimation of basement structure, array measurements of microtremors were performed using the Iwatsuki and Shimosa deep borehole observatory where detailed structures were clarified as well as the Fuchu and Koto deep borehole observatory. In this study, estimated velocity structures of S-wave were compared with the geological sequence and results of acoustic velocity logging. The phase velocity was estimated by the spatial autocorrection method using FFT. The phase velocity with a smooth normal dispersion was observed in the periodic range from 0.5 to 5 sec in Iwatsuki, and from 0.5 to 4 sec in Shimosa by the combination of four-point circular arrays with radii of 100, 300, and 600 m. The underground structures estimated from the phase velocities coincided well with the geological sequence, and results of acoustic velocity logging and velocity logging for each borehole. For the Iwatsuki borehole, the basement velocity was also estimated properly in the periodic range of observation. While, for the Shimosa borehole, measurements with the period around 6 sec were required to estimate the basement velocity more accurately. 13 refs., 11 figs., 1 tab.

It is known that infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) on semiconductor or insulator surfaces becomes practicable by using buried metal layer (BML) substrates, in which the metal thin film is buried order semiconductor or insulator films. In this work, IRAS has been measured for Langmuir-Blodgett films deposited on the BML substrate with SiO2/Al/Si(100) structure and the observed spectrum intensity has been quantitatively compared with the calculation assuming the ideal multilayer structure for the BML substrate. The BML-IRAS using CoSi2 has been adopted to the detection of SiHn on the Si (100) substrate during synchrotron radiation (SR) stimulated Si2H6 gas source molecular beam epitaxy. It has been found that SiH2 and SiH3 on the Si (100) surface are easily decomposed by SR, but SiH can`t be decomposed. From these experiments, it has been concluded that the BML-IRAS is an useful in situ observation technique for the photo-stimulated surface reactions. 26 refs., 9 figs.

This study is intended to establish a basic technology for innovative high-efficiency separation membrane materials that can be used in areas in which application of membrane separation has been impossible. The water/ethanol separation membrane (for water selective permeation) and water/acetic acid separation membrane (for water selective permeation) achieved separation coefficient and permeation velocity of the world's highest level. The water/ethanol separation membrane (for ethanol selective permeation), although its separation coefficient is lower than the world's highest performance, has high permeation velocity, providing the performance of the worldwide level as seen from the comprehensive viewpoint. The carbon monoxide/nitrogen separation membrane achieved separation coefficient and permeation velocity of the world's highest level. The oxygen/nitrogen separation membrane requires further enhancement in the permeation velocity and stability. Establishment has been performed on separation technologies for membrane separation of non-water soluble aqueous solutions, optical division by using chiral crown ether, high-performance liquid separation by means of plasma surface treatment, and particle separation. Basic analysis has been advanced also on evaluation technologies for gaseous body separation membrane and liquid separation membrane, of which future progress is expected. (NEDO)

Living standards improving in developing countries especially in China are the most influential factor to determine the demand for Cu. Consumption of Ni will depend on the trends of advanced technologies such as Ni-hydrogen battery, fuel cell, shape memory alloy, hydrogen absorbing alloy, in addition to increase in global population and developing countries' living standards improvement. Co is far more dependent on advanced technologies than Ni is. On the land, Ni ore is increasingly lower in quality and Co is being retrieved from by-products of Cu production, both meeting the problem of unstable supply. Consideration is made to apply new extraction methods to Cu production; there are some potential resources for Fe and Mn. The Mn nodule exists in great quantities and is a attractive source of supply, but a long time will be required before it is exploited. It is necessary to speed up the study to exploit the Mn nodule, but first of all the problem of its competition with land resources in terms of cost has to be solved. It needs to be found out at what stage of production the Mn nodule is competitive with land products. In any case, Japan should undertake the efforts of marine resources exploitation leading other countries of the world. (NEDO)

The paper conducted a R and D on the handling of drilling equipment in drilling/collecting of submarine oil and the gas lift of artificial oil extraction technology. As to each equipment of a barge style handling system, conducted were assembly/adjustment/trial run on land and pipe handling experiments on sea. In the experiment, confirmed were pipe transfer function, lifting function, fitting function, grasping function, etc. In the ocean experiment, studied were pipe bending stress, Karman vortex control effects, etc. Relating to the gas lift system, experiments were made on confirmation of fabrication/performance of air compressor. Moreover, a technique of air transportation to the blowing inlet of the gas lift pipe was established by developing an air blowing system and fabricating a long-distance flexible pipe. Concerning the gas/liquid/solid three-phase separator, a cyclone separator was developed, and improvement in lifting efficiency was confirmed. Helped by these, the problems of the gas lift system were almost solved, and a possibility of the commercial-base production system was obtained. 2 refs., 182 figs., 47 tabs.

We compare estimates of the empirical transfer function (ETF) to the plane SH-wave theoretical transfer function (TTF) within a laterally constant medium for invasive and noninvasive estimates of the seismic shear-wave slownesses at 13 Kiban-Kyoshin network stations throughout Japan. The difference between the ETF and either of the TTFs is substantially larger than the difference between the two TTFs computed from different estimates of the seismic properties. We show that the plane SH-wave TTF through a laterally homogeneous medium at vertical incidence inadequately models observed amplifications at most sites for both slowness estimates, obtained via downhole measurements and the spectral analysis of surface waves. Strategies to improve the predictions can be separated into two broad categories: improving the measurement of soil properties and improving the theory that maps the 1D soil profile onto spectral amplification. Using an example site where the 1D plane SH-wave formulation poorly predicts the ETF, we find a more satisfactory fit to the ETF by modeling the full wavefield and incorporating spatially correlated variability of the seismic properties. We conclude that our ability to model the observed site response transfer function is limited largely by the assumptions of the theoretical formulation rather than the uncertainty of the soil property estimates.

Carbon fluxes were estimated for 84 regions (54 lands + 30 oceans) over the globe during the period of 1990-2011. We used (1) the CCSR/NIES/FRCGC AGCM-based Chemistry Transport Model (ACTM), (2) atmospheric CO2 concentrations at 74 sites from GLOBALVIEW-CO2 (2013) data product, (3) Seasonally varying a presubtracted fluxes for atmosphere-ocean exchange (Takahashi et al., 2009), (4) interannually varying a priori fossil fuel fluxes (incl. cement production) from CDIAC global totals and EDGAR4.2 spatial distributions, and (5) 3-hourly terrestrial biosphere fluxes are constructed from the annually balanced CASA and JRA-25 reanalysis meteorology (Y. Niwa, Pers. Comm., 2013). As a result of time-dependent inversions, mean total flux (excluding fossil fuel) for the period 1990-2011 is estimated to be -3.33 GtC/yr, where land (incl. biomass burning and land use change) and ocean absorb an average rate of -1.98 and -1.35 GtC/yr, respectively. The land uptake is mainly due to northern land (-1.57 GtC/yr), while the tropical and southern lands contribute -0.03 and -0.38 GtC/yr, respectively. It is also found that Boreal North America and Boreal Eurasia show negative trends in the estimated fluxes during the analysis period. The global ocean sink has no clear long-term trend in the period. Results with different inversion settings and for other regions will be discussed. Our analysis suggests that no known transport bias in ACTM forward simulation allow us to estimate CO2 fluxes at good accuracy at hemispheric and regional scale. Acknowledgements. 16. Seismic attenuation structure associated with episodic tremors and slip zones, southwestern Japan, in the Nankai subduction zone

We imaged the seismic attenuation structure (frequency- independent Qp) beneath southwestern Japan using t* estimated by the S coda wave spectral ratio method to the waveform data from the Kiban nationwide seismic network. The seismic attenuation (Qp-1) structure was clearly imaged for the region beneath Shikoku, the Kii peninsula, and eastern Kyushu at depths down to 50 km. At depths of 5 to 35 km, the seismic attenuation structure changes at the Median Tectonic Line and other geological boundaries beneath Shikoku and the southwestern Kii peninsula. High-Qp zones within the lower crust of the overlying plate were found just above the slip regions at the centers and deeper parts of the long-term slow-slip events (SSEs) beneath the Bungo and Kii channels and central Shikoku. Beneath central Shikoku, within the overlying plate, a high-Qp zone bounded by low-Qp zones was located from the top of the overlying plate to the plate interface of the subducting plate. The high-Qp zone and low-Qp zones correspond to high-Vp and low-Vp zones of previous study by Matsubara et al. [2009], respectively. The boundaries of the high-Qp zone and the low-Qp zones were located at the segment boundaries of tremors. The heterogeneity of the seismic attenuation and velocity structures also appeared to correspond to the characteristics of geography (uplifting map by Ohmori [1990]) beneath Shikoku. The results indicated that the locations of the long- and short-term SSEs could be limited by the inhomogeneous distribution of the materials and/or condition of the overlying plate, which is considered to be formed due to geological and geographical process. The heterogeneity of materials and/or condition within the forearc crust possibly made an effect on inhomogeneous rheological strength distribution on the interface.
