G-5 and 6 measure and investigate actual state of use of hot water supply systems in dormitories used by persons living alone without their families and by unmarried persons to collect fundamental data. G-5 considers how hot water is used, by making a questionnaire survey on the subject houses, and identifies the consumption trend of heat, water and hot water in the hot water supply systems as a whole. G-6 selected eleven houses from among the houses discussed in the previous report to identify the trend of use of hot water by each house. Also, quantity of hot water used in every day of the week is estimated. G-7 discusses methods for estimating water temperatures at faucets of water pipes from the water sources. This is intended to raise the accuracy of tap water temperature conversion coefficient by districts used for calculating estimated heat quantity as a parameter 'hot water supply energy consumption coefficient' to evaluate energy saving performance of a hot water supply facility. G-8 performs numerical simulations changing different parameters in the hot water supply piping system by using a heat loss calculation model for the existing household hot water supply piping. It executes evaluation on energy conservation performance of each model. G-9 estimates efficiency of instantaneous household gas hot water supply devices, not only on thermal efficiency of devices during steady state combustion, but also on non-steady state such as start-up, and discusses methods to derive actual efficiency by using calculations. The paper stated mostly topics from special lectures. Composite materials have a lot of potentialities, and there are larger expectations in flexible and high-strength soft composites rather than the conventional high rigidity ones. As to micro-machines, the problems are on mechanical property of the element, environment/friction/fracture/life, etc. and the evaluation method of the characteristics was studied. Concerning the research and development of the intellectual structure system, the introductive study has entered the second year. Ultimately, structures have functions similar to those of the living organism had, and conduct self-diagnosis, self-repair and autonomous-response. Railroad structures receive regular inspections according to the rule, and a half of the objects for the inspection are cracks, unbonding and weathering of concrete. With the Hanshin Awaji great earthquake especially, the anti-earthquake reinforcement has been expedited. In various kinds of materials, the finer the crystal particle becomes, the greater the high temperature deforming ability becomes. When the particle size is below the critical particle size, it shows superplasticity. The study is advancing. As to high density secondary batteries, introduced especially were Ni-hydrogen batteries and Li batteries.

The outline of the Tatara Bridge is given to introduce the features of the entire structural system and fundamental problems concerning the construction of the huge cable stayed bridge. The central span of the bridge is 890m. The topography and geological features of the bridging point are reviewed, and social conditions such as being in a national park, safety for sailing, etc. are taken into consideration for various technological studies on the construction of the huge bridge. Bridge piers are provided in the side spans and appropriate counter weight is loaded to design a more economical bridge which is more suitable for the topography as compared with a suspension bridge. The cable stayed bridge requires no anchorage which is necessary for a suspension bridge with very little topological alteration, and an excellent result is obtained both in cost and term of construction as compared with a suspension bridge. The rigidity of the cable stayed bridge is high, and the stability of the resistance to wind of the structure is also very satisfactory. As a result, it is concluded that the bridge can be designed and constructed using currently available technologies, and a cable stayed bridge is selected in August, 1990 as the type for the Tatara Bridge. 9 figs., 1 tab.

Full Text Available Dai Ato Gakujutsu Shien Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan Background: The ankle-brachial index (ABI and pulse wave velocity (PWV are indices of atherosclerosis and arterial stiffness. The Japan-made measuring devices of those indices have spread widely because of their convenience and the significance of the parameters. However, studies that comprehensively discuss the various pitfalls in using these indices are not available. Methods: This study presents several representative pitfalls in using the ABI and brachial-ankle PWV (baPWV by showing the result sheets of the device, “the Vascular Profiler”. Furthermore, some considerations when utilizing these indices in the future are also discussed. Results: Several diseases such as arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO, arterial calcification in the lower limb, arterial stenosis in the right upper-limb, aortic valve diseases, arterial stenosis in the upper-limb of the contralateral side of the hemodialysis access, are the representative pitfalls when evaluating ABI and baPWV. Moreover, a measurement error is found to actually exist. Furthermore, same phenomena are considered most likely to occur when using other similar indices and devices. Conclusion: The ABI and baPWV are the useful and significant biomarkers. Nevertheless, caution is sometimes necessary when interpreting them. Moreover, rigorous patient exclusion criteria should be considered when using those indices in the severely conditioned patient population. And the results of this study can be applied to enhance the literacy using other indices, such as the cardio-ankle vascular index and other similar devices. This paper describes development and operation evaluation on a domestic plant cultivating unit that can cultivate plants throughout a year by installing a prototype cultivating device effectively utilizing electric power, and controlling the cultivation environments. The prototype plant cultivating device uses trially an air cooling heat pump for general household use with high general-purpose applicability installed in a glass greenhouse with an area of about 10 m[sup 2], similar to those used by orchid lover club members. The device also uses commercially available humidifying and ventilating devices. No household horticultural facilities in cold district have ever used this kind of heat pump. Generally, cultivating environments in glass greenhouses are affected more easily by outside climate change as the greenhouse volume becomes smaller. For this reason, with this small-scale prototype cultivating device, orchids are cultivated to identify cultivating environments, and study technological development on controls over proper year-round cultivation and effective cultivation environments, as well as development and operation evaluation on household plant cultivation devices. 2 figs., 1 tab.

Full Text Available Dai Ato,1 Toshitami Sawayama2 1Gakujutsu Shien (Academic Support Co., Ltd. Tokyo, 2Sawayama Clinic, Okayama, Japan Abstract: While pulse wave velocity (PWV correlates with blood pressure (BP, its extent differs between patients, and some cases of high PWV in normotensives are present. Moreover, PWV frequently remains high in hypertensive patients despite adequate BP control. The factors associated with such phenomena are yet to be elucidated. Here, we investigated the factors associated with brachial–ankle PWV (baPWV in 107 patients whose systolic BP was under 140 mmHg at their latest baPWV measurement. There were 64 controlled hypertensives and 43 normotensives. Multivariate regression analysis identified age, hypertension, body mass index (BMI, systolic BP, and heart rate (HR as independent factors for baPWV. Next, we divided the subjects into groups according to their age (in 5-year increments and calculated the mean and standard deviation (SD of the baPWV for each group. For each age group, we defined patients with a baPWV above the mean + SD baPWV for the group as the high-baPWV cohort. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that BMI, hypertension, and smoking were independent determinants of a high-baPWV subject. This represents the first study to report the existence of the hypertensive state itself as one of the independent predictors of high baPWV in normotensive and well-treated hypertensive patients. This finding implies that the hypertensive state itself possibly worsens arterial stiffness independently from aging in spite of adequate BP maintenance. To prevent the early progression of arterial stiffness, the application of an appropriate intervention during the early stages of hypertension is important and the continuation of an appropriate BP treatment is suggested. Keywords: arterial stiffness, brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity, heart failure, hypertension, peripheral arterial disease

In order to increase the geothermal power generation volume in Japan furthermore after now, it is necessary to develop the deep-seated geothermal fluid collecting technique at 3,000 to 4,000m in depth and about 350degC. In order to collect the deep-seated geothermal resources economically and effectively, there are some principally important problems on production techniques such as P (pressure)-T(temperature)-S (flow rate)-D (fluid density) logging technique, P (pressure)-T (temperature)-C (chemical composition) monitoring technique, high temperature tracer monitoring technique, scale monitoring technique, scale protection and removal technique and so on. The PTSD logging technique is a measuring technique for collecting some data necessary to conduct production management effectively. The PTC monitoring technique is a technique for collecting data on the geothermal resources essential for the resources evaluation and presumption, and tracer monitoring technique is a technique for collecting actual measurement data of fluid flow analysis in the deep-seated geothermal resources. And the sale monitoring is a technique for collecting data on various kinds of scale components of the deep-seated geothermal water and in the steam. In this paper, these techniques are summarized. 8 figs.

Compiled are the results of studies conducted in fiscal 1967 on MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) power generation. In the test operation and modification of a 1,000kW-class MHD power generator at the Electrical Research Laboratory, a test is conducted using Faraday-type electrodes. It is then found that this configuration results in a maximum output of approximately 700kW, which is less than expected. In the experimental construction at the Hitachi, Ltd., of a machine capable of a long-term operation, an MHD power generator is built for a continuous operation of 100 hours with an maximum output of 2kW, and a 110-hour power generation is successfully achieved with a maximum output of 1.9kW. In the research and development of heat exchangers, tests are conducted for a bulkhead type heat exchanger, heat accumulator type heat exchanger, molten slag type heat exchanger, and a gas/liquid 2-phase flow type heat exchanger. Various field experiments were carried out using a 1000m deep borehole at Inagawa town, about 10km north of the focus of the Hanshin-Awaji Great Earthquake and directly above the area where shallow earthquake activities have intermittently occurred. These experiments included stress measurement by hydraulic fracturing, hydrophone-aided VSP, permeability tests and observation of various types of logging. The laboratory experiments were also carried out, including measurement of various properties and stresses of the core samples. The stress-depth relationship, determined by the hydraulic fracturing method, shows that the stress gradient well coincides with the Western Japan standard at a depth up to 700m, whereas it is approximately twice as high as the standard at a depth of 946m, at which core disking and borehole break-out are clearly observed, and hence stresses conceivably concentrate locally. Orientation of the maximum horizontal compressive stress is E-W at a depth of around 600m, but greatly changes to NNW-SSE at a deeper position. 4 refs., 5 figs.

The basic policy for this investigation consists of the following: (1) an indication on existence of a blank area in the Akita off-coast earthquake shall be viewed so importantly that a fault model is set to estimate damages; (2) because most of the earthquakes in history of Akita Prefecture are inland earthquakes with magnitude of about M=7, four earthquakes in the past shall be adopted as the set model; and (3) the central Sea of Japan earthquake in 1983 was an earthquake occurred in the Sea of Japan side and caused a great deal of damages to Akita Prefecture, and its epicenter model and damages were investigated in detail, hence these data shall be utilized in verifying the procedure and method for estimating damages studied in the present investigation. This paper reports finally estimated human damages. With an assumed earthquake as strong as the Tencho earthquake in the year of 830, more than 1000 deaths will occur in the city of Akita; with an earthquake in the scale of the Noshiro earthquake in 1694, more than 50 deaths will be counted in the city of Noshiro; one as strong as the Rikuu earthquake in 1896 will cause about 300 deaths in the cities of Yokote and Omagari, respectively; one with the scale of the 1914 Goushu earthquake will result in about 300 people to be killed in the city of Omagari and about 200 people in the city of Yuzawa; and an earthquake estimated to occur in the blank area off the Akita coast will force 33% of the residents of the Kisakata town to be evacuated from their homes. 1 fig.

Progress of development in latest shield construction method is startling. Various new construction methods have been developed and applied to constructions, such as a triad multi-shield, a parent-child shield and variable cross section shields for multi micro shield tunnel and square cross section, including a spherical shield. On the other hand, large and long-distance shield constructions have been carried out, such as ones for the Tokyo Bay Highway and Kanda River, which have inevitably accelerated development of automation. Different systems that have been completed, developed and applied to actual constructions include systems for automatic segment transportation and assembling, automatic extension of mud delivery and drainage pipes, automatic excavation control, sheet spreading devices, and comprehensive construction control. Recent constructions tend to require high-speed excavation and work at greater depths, in addition to increase in scale and distance, whereas developed new technologies are increasing diversity. This paper lists in one table new technologies for shield construction methods published in the last decade. It also summarizes representative technologies extracted from the table, looks back over the new technologies used in the Tokyo Bay Highway construction, and describes future prospects on the technologies. 9 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.

Structures of oil and gas fields to be recently explored have changed from simple structures represented by anticline into more complicated and more delicate structures in the deeper underground. In order to discover and develop prospective oil and gas fields among such geological structures, it is indispensable to construct a system which can treat seismic exploration date collectively before stacking and can easily perform imaging of underground structures accurately. Based on the advancement of hardware, Japan National Oil Corporation and Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. have developed a depth imaging system as an interactive tool for constructing underground structures accurately through a cooperation of highly accurate imaging technology. Using this system, two-dimensional underground structure models can be easily given and modified by interactively referring to results of depth migration velocity analysis and stacking velocity analysis, well data, cross sections after depth transform, etc. 1 fig.

The results of the overseas survey were summed up mostly of global warming prevention measures taken by the U.S. government and those by private companies. At COP3 in 1997, the U.S. gave a pledge internationally that they would reduce greenhouse effect gas emissions during 2008-2012 7% below from that in 1990. But the U.S. government seems hesitating to take concrete measures in regions. Hesitating, however, they are publicly making it a target to find how to eliminate a risk of global warming which is now a global problem in cooperation with other countries and international organizations. Concretely, programs are as follows: ranking of the energy consumption amount of household electric appliances, housing loan programs taking energy efficiency into account, preferential taxing system, incentive money system in case of using the substituting energy transportation program, waste management program, commendation of men of achievements and prize-winning, etc. (NEDO)

This paper reports the surveys in fiscal 1999 on the new energy promotion policies in Germany. Because of the cold climate condition, eighty percent of household energy consumption is for room heating. Regulations on room heating thermal consumption on new and modified buildings, which were begun in the end of 1979, have accomplished the intended effects. However, the achievements have been deadlocked because of industrial collapse in the East Germany area and the delay in modernizing the prefabricated residential buildings. Because of the current situation in which energy saving is difficult in the consumer department, the federal government has shifted the emphasis to rationalization in the industrial department, which has started voluntary regulation on CO2 discharge. However, no noticeable effects have been seen in the electric power, steel making and chemical industries as have been expected. The limitation in energy saving and the policy of abolishing nuclear power generation on the long term basis (because of safety) have expanded expectation on regenerative energies. The plan calls for bringing up the regenerative energy utilization to 50% ratio by 2050, whereas a utilization promoting program was launched in September 1999. Part of the environment tax (amounting to an annual revenue of 12.5 billion Marks) will be assigned to the financial source for the subsidy measures (1 billion Marks). Legislative amendments are discussed, including review on the electric power purchase law for wind power and photovoltaic power generation systems. (NEDO)

This paper reports the surveys in fiscal 1999 on the new energy promotion policies in France. The basic stance taken for the policies is the maintenance of public service in energy fields, diversification of supply systems and valuing the environment, and the responsibilities to the future generations. This course increases the relative importance of regenerative energies. Energy conservation is the most important policy problem on the medium to long term basis. The international commitment of France in dealing with global environment issues is to suppress generation of greenhouse effect gases in 2008 through 2012 to the level in 1990. The amount of gases that will be discharged as anticipated from the current status requires reduction of 16 million tons as the carbon weight. The environment tax was elaborated based on 500 francs per discharge of one ton of carbon, whose introduction has been decided to be made starting 2001. The taxation is estimated to have effect of reducing 6.7 million tons. The reduction is short by 2.27 million tons even if the effects of reduction measures in each sector and of the environment tax introduction are counted. The environment taxation may be made harsher if required, upon ascertaining the people's behavior in energy consumption. Measures to make the discharge right transaction more flexible are not taken into considerations. (NEDO)

This paper reports the surveys in fiscal 1999 on the new energy promotion policies in Canada. At the Kyoto Conference for Global Warming Prevention, Canada agreed to reduce gas discharge in 2008 through 2012 by 6% from that in 1990 as the reduction target considered realizable while maintaining the trade competitive power. The Ministry for Natural Resources encourages enhancement in energy efficiency and use of substitution energy resources, and pushes forward the promotion programs. The government imposes the world's most stringent energy efficiency criteria on electric products through the high-efficiency and substitution energy program. In the regenerative energy technologies, the government supports use of regenerative energies from the cost and environmental influence aspects. In the energy development programs, the government supports eleven ministries and agencies for energy related research and development activities. In the regenerative energy development plan, targets are set on promotion of air conditioning and hot water supply systems utilizing such regenerative energies as solar light, biomass, and underground heat. The importance is placed not only on development of new technologies, but also on marketing technologies. (NEDO)

This paper reports the surveys in fiscal 1999 on the new energy promotion policies Britain. Britain has liberated completely the electric power market in June 1999 subsequently from that for the gas market. In order to share the target of reducing greenhouse effect gases during 2008 through 2012 as committed by the EU in the Kyoto Protocol, Britain has decided officially a 12.5% reduction in June 1998. The climate change tax was proposed in March 1999, and its implementation is scheduled for April 2001. This is a taxation upon commercial and industrial operators (whose carbon dioxide discharge is accounting for 40%), by which annual reduction of two million carbon tons is estimated in 2010. The government has set a target to take care of 10% of the electric power demand by regenerative energies by 2010. This policy is anticipated to be announced by the end of 2000. The EU has moved one step forward for complete opening of the electric power market in 1999, which will be followed by the gas market in August 2000. In addition, a take-off campaign was launched to promote participation and investments into the regenerative energy project. (NEDO)

The FY 1998 programs for development of technologies for commercialization of industrial solar systems include those for freezing/refrigeration systems utilizing solar heat, and international joint programs for development of technologies for the solar heat-utilizing systems. The studies are also conducted to draw the technological development programs for the solar heat-utilizing systems to be developed in the future. For development of the solar heat-utilizing freezing/refrigeration systems, the efforts are directed to extending service life of hydrogen occluding alloy to at least 10 years, which is one of the final targets. High reversibility up to 1,000 cycles is confirmed with the alloy working at low temperature for generating low-temperature heat. The international joint programs for technological development include technology evaluation of lumber drying by solar heat by operating the pilot plant, training of engineers and study on commercialization of the concept in Republic of Indonesia. The studies on technological development of solar heat-utilizing systems include those on classification of the solar heat-utilizing systems by area and utilization type, and evaluation of operating temperature levels and the merits and themes/problems. This paper reports the surveys in fiscal 1999 on the summary of new energy promotion policies in the U.S.A. The ratio of regenerative energies to all energy in the U.S.A. is 10%. On the other hand, efforts are given on marine energy investigations, and to make hydrogen useful as one of the energy sources. The Matsunaga hydrogen research and development act was enacted in 1990, and so was the hydrogen's future act in 1996 to move positively forward the development thereof. The federal government has announced positive use of substitution fuel using automobiles in the presidential ordinance, whereas the ratio of the substitution fuel cars accounted for in those used by governmental organizations is planned to be 75% in fiscal 1999. At the Kyoto Conference for Global Warming-up Prevention, America was obligated to reduce by 2012 the greenhouse effect gas by 7% against the generation in 1990, but it rejected the proposition saying the country is unable to approve it without participation of developing countries. In 1998, America announced the collective national energy strategy, and recommended utilization of regenerative energies to prevent climate changes. In April 1999, President Clinton issued the plan for governmental greening, and ordered suppression of generation of air polluting substances. In August of the same year, a presidential ordinance was promulgated on developing and promoting use of the bio-energies. (NEDO)

For the study of a natural energy system taking advantage of radiation cooling, a simplified method for estimating downward atmospheric radiation quantities was examined, using observation records supplied from Hachioji City, Aerological Observatory in Tsukuba City, and four other locations. Downward atmospheric radiation quantities are closely related to partial vapor pressure in the atmosphere. Because partial vapor pressure changes according to the season, it was classified into two, for summer and for winter, and was referred to downward atmospheric radiation quantities for the establishment of their correlationships. Downward atmospheric radiation quantities were predicted on the basis of meteorological factors such as partial vapor pressure and free air temperature. Accuracy was examined of the simplified estimation equation for downward atmospheric radiation that had been proposed. A multiple regression analysis was carried out for calculating constants for the estimation equation, using partial vapor pressure, Stefan-Boltzmann constant, and free air dry-bulb absolute temperature, all closely correlated with atmospheric downward radiation quantities. Accuracy improved by time-based classification. At night, use of SAT (equivalent free air temperature) produced more accurate estimation. Though dependent upon local characteristics of the observation spot, the estimation equation works effectively. 10 refs., 10 figs., 3 tabs.

The outline of a model for architectural systematization of natural energy conversion and the experiment result on the basic thermal performance in winter are described. The model is about 20 m{sup 2} in floor space. Foam polystyrene of 100 mm and 200 mm thick was used for the outer wall as heat insulating materials. The model has a solar battery and air conditioner and uses red brick as a heat reservoir. An experiment was made on seven modes obtained when three elements (heating, heat storage, and night insulated door) are combined. The information obtained by the experiment showed that a model for architectural systematization has high heat insulation and tightness and can be used as an energy element or an evaluation model for architectural systematization. In this model for architectural systematization, the power consumption of an air conditioner in winter can be fully supplied by only the power generation based on a solar battery. In an architectural element, the heating energy consumption can be remarkably reduced and the indoor thermal environment can be greatly improved, by the combination of a heat reservoir and night heat insulated door. 1 ref., 6 figs., 3 tabs.

This paper describes the achievements in 1991 on studies on the bituminous coal liquefaction technology using a pilot plant. Based on the detailed design of the 150-t/d pilot plant, study problems and analysis items were reviewed, and a material balance acquiring method and a reaction column data analyzing method were discussed. Utilization of the liquefaction simulator was attempted. Efficient execution of the pilot plant operation study requires to have the basic and support study achievements reflected on the pilot plant operation, and clarify the roles to be played by the groups. Therefore, discussion items were compiled. The overall process plan for the design and construction was reviewed based on the plan discussed in fiscal 1990. Fiscal 1991 has launched common civil engineering constructions. The operation plans for the main four facilities in the pilot plant, which have been prepared in fiscal 1988, were continued of reviewing to cope with the situation of the decreased construction budget. The budget was reviewed again in fiscal 1991, which would present a prospect of starting the operation in fiscal 1995. Annual reviews on the basic operation plans for the main four facilities and the conceptions taken to date were put into order. The project management system was also expanded and re-arranged, including the information registration and retrieval system. (NEDO)

Tests and researches have been carried out on operation of a 200-t/d entrained bed coal gasification pilot plant built with an objective of establishing the coal gasification composite power generation technology. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1993. The current fiscal year has performed the test operation on the pilot plant as a whole by using the coal D in continuation from the previous fiscal year. For the gasification furnace facilities, an air variation test was conducted for charging coal into the gasification furnace by using recovered oxygen, wherein satisfactory control was verified on oxygen concentration in the air supplied into the gasification furnace. In the gas refining facilities (dry desulfurizing facilities), the total sulfur concentration at 300 to 650 ppm in the gas produced from the coal gasification furnace was refined to 30 to 100 ppm, having achieved the initial target value. The gas refining facilities (dry dust collecting facilities) have achieved satisfactory result that the entrance dust concentration at 66 to 270 mg/Nm{sup 3} was reduced to the exit dust concentration at 1 to 3 mg/Nm{sup 3}. With respect to the gas turbine facilities, the planned values of output and thermal efficiency were satisfied, having derived good performance characteristics. (NEDO)

With an objective to establish basic technologies, research and development has been carried out to make it possible to utilize high-temperature superconductor materials in terms of engineering in the fields of electronics and electric power. In the research on superconductor materials in fiscal 1992, it was discovered from measurements of temperature change in polarization dependent EXAFS in thin YBCO film grown on an MgO substrate that relative displacement in copper atoms in CuO{sub 2} plane and peak oxygen, and relative displacement in copper atoms on a primary chain and peak oxygen show apparent increase at the critical superconduction temperature. It was verified that this phenomenon does not occur in materials that do not show superconduction. In the research and development of superconductor elements, full-swing research has begun toward establishing the following technologies: process technologies for a substrate that meets requirement of surface flatness required in electronic elements, a superconductor thin film that assures uniformity in interface composition and the laminated thin film tunnel junction that combines the superconductor thin film, an inter-layer insulation film, and ultra-fine processing to suppress deterioration, and a tunnel element technology as a technology to put the above technologies together. A summary is given on the current state of micro machine (MM) technologies and its research and development. The large scale project system was inaugurated in 1966 under the coordinations among the industries, government and universities. The MM technology creates micro movement mechanisms using IC{prime}s in place of electronic circuits. The subject is to perform an IC manufacturing process which can process IC{prime}s three-dimensionally and assemble them simultaneously, and the product strength. The target is a systematization of constitutive elements ultra small, yet high in performance. This requires an international cooperation. The future MM image would include those that enter blood vessels and organs to help operations with only a small amount of incision, and those that enter power plant boiler piping and aircraft engines to perform inspection and repair without a need of dismantling. Problems to be solved relate to the MM movement mechanisms, modules having environment recognizing function, small-size energy converters, wireless transmission technologies, and dynamics in microscopic regions.
