AV/Alert system of U.S. Data General Co. (DGC) is a system which performs the remote trouble response to UNIX servers of DGC. As the diagnostic decision has provided low accuracy, highly skilled field engineers have been required. Accordingly, the enhancement of accuracy in the diagnostic decision has been strongly required. For the purpose of drastic improvement in accuracy of the diagnostic decision without experts utilizing fuzzy technology, a flexible intelligence diagnostic decision system (FI-DDS) of AV/Alert has been developed. The FI-remote-DDS is composed of AV/Alert, FI-DDS, and an automatic accumulation software for accident examples. The FI-DDS has made the diagnostic decision engine of AV/Alert highly accurate. The automatic accumulation software for accident examples provides accident examples and statistic data of accident examples required by FI-DDS, automatically. The system was found to be extremely useful from the analytic results of error code and factors using about 400 actual accident example data in the past. 4 figs.

The purpose of this study is to develop an endoscope system for neurosurgery that can provide not only conventional endoscopic images but also ultraviolet-visible spectra, fluorescence spectra, near infrared spectra, and ultra-soundimages of tissue aiming for real-time identification of pathological tissue. The system also incorporates surgical manipulator and devices such as micro forceps and laser surgical instruments for endoscopic image guided surgery. Surgical Manipulator should be a high performance and easy to operate surgical instrument as well as conventional surgical tools such as scissors and knife. Since living tissue deforms during surgical operation, pre-operative three dimensional information for registration of pathological tissue should be modified based on information obtained during surgery. Thus surgical manipulator should be operated under guidance of surgeon's observation. Consequently, surgical manipulator should have various types of imaging and measurement devices such as an endoscope and an ultrasound imaging probe at its end effectors. Based on this concept, a prototype of a new multi channel surgical manipulator system CM cube (CM3, Computer aided Micro Multichannel Manipulator) that has various types of imaging and measurement devices such as ultra-violet-visible camera for spectroscopic measurement, ultra-sound imaging probe, three dimensional endoscope, together with micro surgical instruments and laser surgical systems has been developed. Its performance was evaluated through in vitro/in vivo experiments and clinical application. (NEDO)

This paper considers new recursive algorithm to find the positive semidefinite stabilizing solution of H{infinity} type Riccati equation with small parameter {epsilon}>0: A{epsilon}{sup T}P{epsilon}+P{epsilon}A{epsilon}+(P{epsilon}B{epsilon}+C{sup T}H)(gamm= a{sup 2}I-H{sup T}H){sup -1}(B{epsilon}{sup T}P{epsilon}+H{sup H}C)+C{sup T}C=0 where the solution P depend on the {epsilon}. In order to obtain the stabilizing solution of the H{infinity} type Riccati equation, we must solve the generalized algebraic Riccati equation. Using the recursive algorithm, we show that the solution of the generalized algebraic Riccati equation converges to a positive semidefinite stabilizing solution with the rate of convergence of O({epsilon}{sup k}). We also show that for singularly perturbed systems, if the H{infinity} norm of the transfer matrix function is less than the H{infinity} norms for the fast system and for the reduced slow system, then the H{infinity} type Riccati equation has a positive semidefinite stabilizing solution. 12 refs.

Phosphonic acid-based inhibitors that are poured into cooling water for copper-tube circulation systems for open heat-accumulators were studied on their influence on pitting corrosion of copper. Amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) dissolved into distilled water to 50 ppm was used for the immersion corrosion test. The corrosion-proof effect of additives such as ZnSO4, benzotriazole (BTA) was tested too. 0.5 mm thick phosphate-treated copper plates with a hole of 5 mm in diameter were used as test specimens. Pitting corrosion on the copper plate occurred when ATMP, BTA and ZnSO4 coexisted. It was proved that SO4 [sup 2-] is essential since Na2SO4 in stead of ZnSO4 induced also corrosion. The pitting took place when 0.6 ppm or more of SO4 [sup 2-] was present in a BTA-added ATMP solution. It was observed that the pitting is prone to occur with increase of SO4 [sup 2-] and the number of pitting increases. The following relationship is established when pitting corrosion occurs; E[sub b] [le] E[sub corr], where the former is a potential value at which current density shows a steep increase and the latter is an average value of spontaneous electrode potential showing a plateau. 8 refs., 11 figs., 1 tab.

A permanent borehole energy storage system utilizing solar energy and waste heat from coolers is simulated, to be used as an air conditioning system for super-tall buildings. A 100m-long pipe is buried vertically into the ground, and a heat medium is caused to circulate in the pipe for the exchange of heat with the soil. Thirty borehole units are used, each measuring 9m{times}9m (with the pipe pitch being 3m). Solar cells occupying half of the wall surface facing south and solar collectors installed on the roof supply electric power and heat for cooling and warming. Heat in the ground is transferred mainly by conduction but also is carried by water and gas in movement. So, an analysis is carried out using an equation in which heat and water move at the same time. Because waste heat from cooling and warming systems is accumulated in the ground and none is discharged into the air, big cities will be protected from warming (from developing heat islands). As compared with the conventional boiler-aided air conditioning system, a hybrid borehole system incorporating solar collectors and solar cells will bring about an 80% reduction in CO2 emission and annual energy consumption. 7 refs., 3 figs., 4 tabs.

High sensitivity radar has been applied to the detection of cavities inside impermeable asphalt layers formed by blistering. The asphalt mixture has the advantage of impermeability, flexibility, and durability, and is used as a impermeable layer for dams and water reservoirs. Although the surface damages can be remedied on all such occasions, the internal damages undetectable from the surface are required to be detected at early stages and remedied. A simple cavity surveying method using a high sensitivity radar without requiring any skills has been developed. This radar has higher sensitivity than the conventional underground radar systems, and is used for the measurement of pavement thickness. A principle that the emitted pulse is reflected at the boundary with different dielectric constants, such as cavities, is utilized in this method. For this method, the position and size can be measured from the obtained waveforms by deducting those of sound pavement without cavities. The minimum detectable size of cavities was found to be 5 cm in diameter and 5 mm in thickness. This radar system was further applied for the inspection of inner cracking of impermeable layer, and the detection accuracy of 1 mm in width up to 2.5 cm in depth from the surface was confirmed. 30 refs., 22 figs., 3 tabs.

The international Medical Treatment Symposium and Exhibition were held from July 20 to the end of August, 2000 in Hannover in Germany, in which the Japan's system for supporting low-invasion surgical operations was presented and information was exchanged for the system. A total of 50 to 100 neurosurgeons visited the exhibition, held as part of the symposium, every day from July 21 to 24. The system for supporting low-invasion surgical operations is rated as the most advanced one in the world. It attracted much attention, because a number of attendees applied for operating manipulator. The research trends seen in the symposium point to early diagnosis of diseases, finer surgical operations, low-invasion type operations, use of high-function diagnosis devices for improving operations, real-time imaging, and application of DNA diagnosis to pathological diagnosis, among others. Japan is leading the world in the technological areas of micromachines, robotics, high-vision and diagnosis. The bold researches, e.g., those on artificial visual and hearing systems to be embedded in the head, are pursued more extensively in the overseas countries. (NEDO)

An examination was made on the method in which imaging of subsurface was carried out with teleseismic waveform data for sensing of faults. In the examination, an experiment was done on the sensing of faults with higher precision, by applying oblique incidence as well as perpendicular upward incidence of SH plane waves, and thereby stacking the imaging in plural events. In numerical experiments, 28 observation points were arranged at 500m spaces apart on the surface, and the incident waves were made the SH plane waves having a bell-shaped time function, with incidence made at an angle varied as 0{degree}, +15{degree} and -15{degree} from the lowest layer of a model. In the calculation of the wave motion field, a difference calculus with secondary accuracy was used for both time and space. In addition, data was prepared with a random noise added to a synthesized waveform to be used as observation data. The calculated waveform data were likened to the observation waveform, to which the method for imaging faults was applied. Consequently, it was noted that satisfactory results were obtained compared with the case where faults were sensed by one event alone. 5 refs., 4 figs.

The research and development project is conducted to develop new methods directly related to early discovery of potential cancer patients, and the FY 2000 results are reported. The FY 2000 efforts are directed to improvement of intra-Alu-PCR method as the superhigh-sensitivity quantitative method, almost established in the previous fiscal year, to have higher reliability and simplicity suitable for automatic diagnosis. It is concluded that (there is no difference of significance between normal persons and cancer patients in free DNA concentration in the blood, determined by the Boyle/intra-Alu-PCR method), but this method is confirmed to be useful for prognostic monitoring of the patients who have the marrow or peripheral vessel cell transplant. Detection of qualitative gene abnormality of DNA in the peripheral vessels is investigated using the K-ras, p53 gene. Certain results are obtained by the MSA method for the former, and by the newly introduced WAVE DNA fragment analysis system for the latter. However, there are still a number of problems to be solved before these methods are applicable to screening for general medical examinations. The research on the (analysis of gene abnormality of cancer itself) has made a notable progress. (NEDO)

To obtain the basic data to develop instruments for diagnosis of atherosclerosis and to elucidate the mechanisms of atherogenesis by focusing on the autofluorescence of blood and vascular walls of atherosclerotic animal models and human patients. We have performed experiments to examine the relationships between autofluorescence of blood and vascular walls of guinea pig atherosclerotic model and human patients and obtained the following results. 1. The autofluorescence from human atherosclerotic aorta included the components with longer wave length than normal aorta, suggesting that diagnosis of atherosclerotic aortic walls will be possible using spectroscopic analysis through glass fiber catheter into vascular system. Further studies should be needed to the quantitative diagnosis. 2. The autofluorescence from blood plasma of human atherosclerotic patients has showed that the peak wave length was shorter than that of normal plasma. This phenomenon was mainly caused by the oxidization of plasma, especially lipoproteins, LDL and HDL. 3. Atherosclerotic model of the guinea pigs was quite similar to human atherosclerosis at the points of cholesterol levels and localization of lipid deposit to arterial walls, and showed to be useful for the studies of atherosclerosis.
