Full Text Available V-shape systems represent an efficient and popular option to increase yields and fruit quality in fruit trees. Hence, this paper attempts to compare some vegetative and yield characteristics of five apple cultivars grown at horticultural research station in Karaj, Iran. The selected apple cultivars were included: 'Golab-kohans' (Iranian cultivar, 'Fuji', 'Gala', 'Starking' and 'Delbar estival' (commercial foreign cultivars that were grafted on M.9 rootstock which were trained in a V system. All of these trees were planted in winter 2005. The time of irrigation started from the second experimental year after planting and the method of irrigation was drip irrigation system. Results showed that the 'Golab-kohans' had the most tree height (278.63 cm, trunk cross sectional area (7.308 cm2 and mean shoot length (100.58 cm. Also 'Delbar estival' had the most yield (0.98 kg, yield efficiency (0.550 kg/cm2. Consistently, Results revealed that among the investigated cultivars, 'Delbar estival' can be introduced as a prone and productive cultivar for V system in Karaj's climatic conditions.

  6. Impact of changing the Japanese term for "schizophrenia" for reasons of stereotypical beliefs of schizophrenia in Japanese youth.

The old term for schizophrenia, "Seishin-Bunretsu-Byo" (Mind-Split Disease), has been replaced by "Togo-Shitcho-Sho" (Integration Disorder) in Japan. Stigma research requiring individuals to report personal beliefs is useful but is subject to social desirability bias. Using the Implicit Association Test, a measurement designed to minimize this bias, we assessed the impact of this renaming on the stereotype of schizophrenia held by a younger generation. The old term was strongly associated with "criminal", and this association became significantly weaker with the new term. The strategy of renaming holds considerable promise for tempering negative bias toward this disorder in Japan.

A PC cable-stayed bridge under extension construction having long span length may have long-cycle vibration generated because of wind. The vibration puts workers working on main girders into a state of seasick causing the workability to drop. Therefore, with an objective to reduce vibration occurring on the main girders during construction, discussions were given on application of an active type vertical vibration absorbing device. The vibration absorbing device is an active system that a weight is driven vertically by a hydraulic actuator. The device was developed with a target that damping ratio when a maximum extension is 120 m becomes three times that when no vibration is absorbed for a 5-span continuous PC cable-stayed bridge with a length of 675 m, a central span of 260 m, and a width of 11 m. A cage housing the weight is connected with the actuator at its top by using pins, and the weight is supported being suspended from the top of the actuator. Vibration is absorbed by utilizing reactive force generated when the weight is driven vertically by the hydraulic actuator. The hydraulic actuator contains a gas spring that supports the dead weight of the weight. Experiments have verified the effectiveness of the vertical vibration absorbing device. 4 refs., 12 figs., 3 tabs.

Full Text Available We wish to share the thought experiences we have undergone in philosophical dialogues with children through the outreach project we developed at a municipal school in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The project intends to research philosophy with children at a public school, creating possibilities to experiment, think, and be in different ways, as well as comprehend the actions and transformations undergone by the project’s agents inside the school. We highlight the singularity of the practices and the multiplicity of the processes which create the philosophical experience, by means of the reflective, aesthetic, and sensitive participation of the subjects. Here we describe a number of encounters that lead us to think about philosophical dialogues and music in schools; both in their own domains of creation as well as their coexistence, thus creating a rich, polyphonic weave: “thought as heterogenesis” (Deleuze; Guattari, 1997. The powerful notion of “experience” (Kohan, 2000 opens the encounters to a movement on the axis of intensity. In this movement, many questions are raised through the encounters: what makes an experience philosophical? What makes an experience musical? What are the possible connections? How does childhood magnify such experiences? Which kind of school are we referring to when we think of the thought experience in its relation with music and philosophy? We discuss Freire, Deleuze & Guattari, Kohan, Larrosa & Masschelein & Simons to reflect upon these and other questions. We also drew upon the children’s descriptions about the experiences they had undergone in these encounters. We will use film and audio transcripts to rescue the dialogues of these encounters. Our goal is to think about the invitation we have come to inhabit through the philosophical-musical experiences with the children; places and times heretofore unexperienced in schools bring upon us different ways of listening and composing the world.

A wind-resistant design of cables for large cable-stayed bridges is required as a measure against rain-wind induced vibration. In such bridges, many cables are arranged in a short pitch, which causes a large drag force on the cables. Therefore, reduction of drag force on cables is essential for rationalizing bridge design, as well as restraint of vibration. This paper describes studies on a new cable having both a low drag co-efficient force and rain-vibration suppressing effects. Through many investigations using wind tunnel tests, an indented cable was developed as a countermeasure against rain-wind induced vibration, and finally it was applied to the Tatara Bridge which is the largest cable-stayed bridge in the world. A seawater desalinating still was devised, which utilizes solar heat and combines a basin type still with a multiple effect type still. The devised still has a triangular cross section, has a seawater basin at its bottom, wherein the slope facing the sun has a double glass window, and the other slope is arranged with a multiple effect still (three-step effect system). The sun light that has permeated the double glass window heats and evaporates seawater on the basin. Majority of the generated steam is condensed at the lower face of a lowermost partition of the multiple effect section, and its latent heat evaporates the seawater contained in a wick on the rear side. The steam is condensed at the lower face of the second partition, this action is repeated sequentially to upper plates, and the heat is discharged finally into the surrounding air from the uppermost face of the multiple effect section. Seawater is supplied from the upper part onto the wick in each partition, which is evaporated, condensed and recovered at the lower part. The condensate is recovered at the lower part of each plate. The construction is simpler than the conventional downward indirect heating multiple effect type still, and the distilling efficiency is improved by 30%. Technological difficulty in the upward direct heating multiple effect type still can also be improved. 6 refs., 6 figs., 2 tabs.

The paper made and studied simulation models in case of introducing new energy of composite type to cities. In the study, using a standard composition unit of city as a cluster, the compositional element was divided into 25 cells, which were divided into the residence superiority cell and the business superiority cell. The residence superiority cell was divided into highrise and lowrise. The calculation program is to simulate effects of introducing new energy such as the photovoltaic power generation, solar energy utilization, waste power generation, cogeneration, and unused energy like river water and waste water. Using the program, the analysis of sensitivity was conducted concerning how the outputs will change according to differences in energy consuming composition in the urban area. The calculation was conducted concerning local cities of the warm area, local cities of the cold area, local cities of the subtropical area, residence/working-place neighboring core cities in the warm area, central areas of large cities of the warm area, and new towns of the warm area. 28 figs., 27 tabs.

In a long cable-stayed bridge, countermeasure against wind induced vibration should be often taken at the same time together with the measure against angular bent phenomena (phenomena in which secondary bending stress is generated on the front of fixing socket by live load). The conventional countermeasure is a combined use of buffer rubber and dampers. This study points out problems in the conventional countermeasure on the application to the cables of the Tsurumi Tsubasa Bridge and combination of dampers and angular bending buffer device is examined. The result shows that a combined use of high-damping rubber and oil dampers enables installation of the dampers in a lower position while maintaining the performance and is excellent in the easiness in installation and maintenance and in aesthetic view. This system was applied to the Tsurumi Tsubasa Bridge and the effectiveness on damping and angular bending relaxation was confirmed through the model tests, and vibration tests and field observation on the cables. 9 refs., 20 figs., 7 tabs.

Full Text Available Abstract Background Patients with schizophrenia and their families have suffered greatly from stigmatizing effects. Although many efforts have been made to eradicate both prejudice and stigma, they still prevail even among medical professionals, and little is known about how contact with schizophrenia patients affects their attitudes towards schizophrenia. Methods We assessed the impact of the renaming of the Japanese term for schizophrenia on clinical residents and also evaluated the influence of contact with schizophrenia patients on attitudes toward schizophrenia by comparing the attitudes toward schizophrenia before and after a one-month clinical training period in psychiatry. Fifty-one clinical residents participated. Their attitudes toward schizophrenia were assessed twice, before and one month after clinical training in psychiatry using the Implicit Association Test (IAT as well as Link’s devaluation-discrimination scale. Results The old term for schizophrenia, “Seishin-Bunretsu-Byo”, was more congruent with criminal than the new term for schizophrenia, “Togo-Shitcho-Sho”, before clinical training. However, quite opposite to our expectation, after clinical training the new term had become even more congruent with criminal than the old term. There was no significant correlation between Link's scale and IAT effect. Conclusions Renaming the Japanese term for schizophrenia still reduced the negative images of schizophrenia among clinical residents. However, contact with schizophrenia patients unexpectedly changed clinical residents’ attitudes towards schizophrenia negatively. Our results might contribute to an understanding of the formation of negative attitudes about schizophrenia and assist in developing appropriate clinical training in psychiatry that could reduce prejudice and stigma concerning schizophrenia.

A plurality of parallel cables have been recently employed for long-span cable-stayed bridges. Use of such parallel cables thereupon leads to a special type of wind-induced vibration called wake galloping (simply referred to as WG.) owing to air turbulence caused by upstream cables. This paper attempts to evaluate measures against the WG using a wire connecting method, and identifies the most important influencing factor and the validity of the measures through wind tunnel tests. The following results are hereby clarified. Even if the deformation rigidity of the cables is increased, it is impossible to raise the wind velocity of the WG. The wind velocity of the WG can not be reduced from a wind tunnel wind velocity using non-dimensional wind velocity. The wire connecting method proves to be more effective for reducing the amplitude of the vibration. Provided cables are coupled into a multi-stage using the wire connection method, overall vibration with a greater amplitude can be restricted. To the factor of the restriction additional deformation rigidity of the cables more contributes compared with additional weight of the cables. 9 refs., 13 figs., 2 tabs.

In recent years, the techniques for the typical PC bridges shown in the title have been considerably developed in Japan. However, occurrence of characteristic vibrations of the parallel cables even at relatively low wind speeds are observed in many cases, for which an effective control means is inevitably required. In this report, an investigation of tests on effectiveness of 4 kinds of vibration control means carried out in a wind tunnel and its results are described. In the test, an elastic model of 3-dimension was used for 5 test cases including a case without any control means, and each case was explained and examined in detail. It was revealed that for a damping system, a considerably large damping effect was necessary to restraint the wake galloping, and the cable distance selected to be 1.5 times smaller or 6 times larger than the cable diameter was effective, and while vibration control wires were effective, the adjustment of the cable vibration frequency was ineffective. It was also pointed out that a further verification would be necessary for the latter 2 control systems as no enough experience was yet accumulated in the actual service. 13 refs., 16 figs., 6 tabs.

Painting and cathodic protection are used in combination as a corrosion resisting measure for ship hull. n analytic method which uses the boundary element method for protection electric field by impressed-current method is proposed to show that rational determination is possible for the arrangement and current of the anode, and the arrangement and set voltage of the reference electrode used to control the current. However, repetitive calculation is necessary until overprotection voltage disappears from the surface of the painted steel plate while giving optional insulated area because the insulated area of adequate dimension is unknown. To decrease the number of this repetitive calculation, a study is made on a method of estimating the magnitude of the insulated area to be input as the initial value in the electric field analysis by the boundary element method. Although the insulated area has been empirically obtained, such formurization may be useful for automatic optimization using a computer of the location and number of anode, anode current, arrangement and set voltage of the reference electrode, magnitude of the insulated area, etc. in the impressed-current cathodic protection system. 2 refs., 10 figs., 1 tab.

With a view to presenting the result to ISO (International Organization for Standardization), studies were conducted of accelerated test and evaluation methods capable of promptly reproducing the state of corrosion generated during outdoor exposure tests of surface treated steel sheets. In the study of a wet rate evaluation test, a cycle test was carried out at a wet rate of 25-75% under the conditions of an artificial seawater concentration level of 6.0g/L, equivalence ratio of 0.2, and pH of 2.5, and it was found that a wet rate of 50% was appropriate. For comparison of a rain of pH 2.5 with a rain of pH 3.0 in an acid rain pH evaluation test, a cycle test was conducted at pH 3.0 under the conditions of an artificial seawater concentration level of 6.0g/L, equivalence ratio of 0.2, and a wet rate of 50%, and the result indicated that pH 2.5 was more realistic than pH 3.0. As a comprehensive test, a cycle test was conducted comprising 1 hour of acid rain spray, 4 hours of dry spell, and 3 hours of moist spell under the conditions of an artificial seawater concentration level of 6.0g/L, equivalence ratio of 0.2, wet rate of 50%, and pH of 2.5, and the resultant data were found to be correlative to the data obtained at Naoetsu. Based on the findings, a ground plan was drafted for an international standard relative to methods for testing and evaluating surface treated steel sheets for corrosion resistance. (NEDO)

We study the question of how to represent or summarize raw laboratory data taken from an electronic health record (EHR) using parametric model selection to reduce or cope with biases induced through clinical care. It has been previously demonstrated that the health care process (Hripcsak and Albers, 2012, 2013), as defined by measurement context (Hripcsak and Albers, 2013; Albers et al., 2012) and measurement patterns (Albers and Hripcsak, 2010, 2012), can influence how EHR data are distributed statistically (Kohane and Weber, 2013; Pivovarov et al., 2014). We construct an algorithm, PopKLD, which is based on information criterion model selection (Burnham and Anderson, 2002; Claeskens and Hjort, 2008), is intended to reduce and cope with health care process biases and to produce an intuitively understandable continuous summary. The PopKLD algorithm can be automated and is designed to be applicable in high-throughput settings; for example, the output of the PopKLD algorithm can be used as input for phenotyping algorithms. Moreover, we develop the PopKLD-CAT algorithm that transforms the continuous PopKLD summary into a categorical summary useful for applications that require categorical data such as topic modeling. We evaluate our methodology in two ways. First, we apply the method to laboratory data collected in two different health care contexts, primary versus intensive care. We show that the PopKLD preserves known physiologic features in the data that are lost when summarizing the data using more common laboratory data summaries such as mean and standard deviation. Second, for three disease-laboratory measurement pairs, we perform a phenotyping task: we use the PopKLD and PopKLD-CAT algorithms to define high and low values of the laboratory variable that are used for defining a disease state. We then compare the relationship between the PopKLD-CAT summary disease predictions and the same predictions using empirically estimated mean and standard deviation to a

High efficiency power generation, which is useful for promoting the environment-friendly type energy and coordinated community, is investigated by combining a steam turbine power generation system using the PS-RDF (paper sludge-refuse derived fuel) and a gas turbine (GT) combined cycle. Industrialization plan for processing PS in low cost has been made to ensure the profitability by participating the wholesale power supply under the law of electric power industry. This combined system is similar to the so-called super power generation using municipal garbage, but the lower temperature of steam from GT waste heat boilers (WHB) is super-heated by the flue gas from RDF boiler, which is called advanced power generation system (A.S.S.). The total power generation capacity is 149,000 kW, which consists of three 35,000 kW units of GT and one 44,000 kW unit of steam turbine. When comparing the combined system (A.S.S.) and usual one with the independent installation of the RDF steam power generation system and a GT combined cycle, the A.S.S. provides the repowering efficiency of 7,600 kW output with exactly the same quantity of fuel input as usual one. 71 figs., 31 tabs.

The present study has performed a two-dimensional sprint supporting experiment on effects imposed on vibration damping efficiency of spacers by variation in cable interval, vibration frequency, weight and diameter of parallel cables used in cable-stayed bridges. The experiment indicated phenomena varying in such a way that a characteristic having an unstable limit cycle is shown at cable intervals smaller than SH = 3.05 D, while a soft type characteristic is shown at cable intervals greater than 4.0 D. The onset velocity for wake galloping (WG) to appear increases in proportion to mass and attenuation parameters. Its increasing rate agrees nearly well with the manual type gradient. The appearance of WG can be suppressed easily when the cable intervals are greater than 4 D. The lower the cable vibration frequency, the higher the damping capability can be raised by using friction force. Because the damping performance of spacers decreases relatively when cable weight increases, the suppression effect decreases contrarily to a case of using no spacers. The wind velocity for the WG to appear when spacers are used can be evaluated by using the damping gradient. 5 refs., 20 figs., 1 tab.

Oil dampers and viscous shearing dampers have been used to control wind-induced cable vibrations of cable-stayed bridges. The damping addition efficiency in the case where only damping force of the viscous shearing damper is considered was discussed in the previous paper. In this paper, more precise estimation is done by also considering the spring elasticity of the damper. Arranging the results of an indoor excitation test on viscous shearing dampers using SA-P viscous body, an experimental equation to express the spring rigidity is derived. The spring elasticity becomes smaller with increasing temperature of viscous body, decreasing frequency, and increasing amplitude. Then, the damping addition effect is measured by installing the viscous shearing damper on the actual bridge cable, and is compared with the theoretical value resulting from the complex-eigenvalue analysis. Consequently, it is shown that the theoretical value is almost correspondent with the measured result through the analysis using equivalent coefficient of viscosity and equivalent spring constant, which are arranged in the experimental equation. Moreover, application examples of damping estimation curves for designing cables with dampers are given. 15 refs., 13 figs., 10 tabs.
