A PC cable-stayed bridge under extension construction having long span length may have long-cycle vibration generated because of wind. The vibration puts workers working on main girders into a state of seasick causing the workability to drop. Therefore, with an objective to reduce vibration occurring on the main girders during construction, discussions were given on application of an active type vertical vibration absorbing device. The vibration absorbing device is an active system that a weight is driven vertically by a hydraulic actuator. The device was developed with a target that damping ratio when a maximum extension is 120 m becomes three times that when no vibration is absorbed for a 5-span continuous PC cable-stayed bridge with a length of 675 m, a central span of 260 m, and a width of 11 m. A cage housing the weight is connected with the actuator at its top by using pins, and the weight is supported being suspended from the top of the actuator. Vibration is absorbed by utilizing reactive force generated when the weight is driven vertically by the hydraulic actuator. The hydraulic actuator contains a gas spring that supports the dead weight of the weight. Experiments have verified the effectiveness of the vertical vibration absorbing device. 4 refs., 12 figs., 3 tabs.

This paper describes the vibration control during the erection of 8P main tower of Kurushima-ohashi Bridge. Since the body of tower crane and the crane post were adjacent to the main tower, stability against wind due to the change of separation flow was worried. Response characteristics and design data for the damper were obtained through the wind tunnel tests. Since the vibration characteristics change in each erection step, generation of vortex excitation was examined in various modes. An active mass damper (AMD) was applied to the tower surface radial bending primary vibration, of which natural frequency changes in a wide range at the wind velocity below working limit, and the other vibration modes. A tuned mass damper (TMD) was also used in the mode where large damping energy is required under the high wind velocity and high frequency conditions. For the rolling pendulum type AMD, a servo-motor driving carriage moves on the frame rail, and a restitutive force is obtained with rotating the fan type rolling element pin-supported on the carriage. The natural frequency of AMD can be adjusted by fan shaped plural weight plates. Variable gain type DVFB control was employed, in which displacement and velocity of the damper are used as the control output. Sufficient functions could be obtained. 7 refs., 4 figs., 5 tabs.

This paper describes the wind resistant design and vibration control of bridges. For the long span bridges, vibration by wind is worried due to their flexible structures. Wind tunnel tests are conducted, and the shape of bridges is modified on the basis of the test results. On the other hand, tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are often used during the construction with footing for a short period. For the passive TMD which is a general pendulum type, the number of vibration frequency can be variable by changing the position of spring and damper. The restitutive force can be obtained for the vertical Vibration using lever-type weight damper and spring. For the Active TMD, the weight of lever-type damper is driven by the servo-motor using rack pinion. An optimum regulator is used for the control. Sufficient damping performance was obtained by applying this to the main tower, which depended on the gain and vibration amplitude. An aerodynamic damper is used for the vibration of cables by the wind. Especially, the rain vibration is a problem, which is due to the interaction of rain flow and wind. To solve this problem, a U-engrave cable has been developed for preventing the formation of rainwater flow channels on the cable surface. 9 refs., 14 figs., 5 tabs.

High efficiency power generation, which is useful for promoting the environment-friendly type energy and coordinated community, is investigated by combining a steam turbine power generation system using the PS-RDF (paper sludge-refuse derived fuel) and a gas turbine (GT) combined cycle. Industrialization plan for processing PS in low cost has been made to ensure the profitability by participating the wholesale power supply under the law of electric power industry. This combined system is similar to the so-called super power generation using municipal garbage, but the lower temperature of steam from GT waste heat boilers (WHB) is super-heated by the flue gas from RDF boiler, which is called advanced power generation system (A.S.S.). The total power generation capacity is 149,000 kW, which consists of three 35,000 kW units of GT and one 44,000 kW unit of steam turbine. When comparing the combined system (A.S.S.) and usual one with the independent installation of the RDF steam power generation system and a GT combined cycle, the A.S.S. provides the repowering efficiency of 7,600 kW output with exactly the same quantity of fuel input as usual one. 71 figs., 31 tabs.

The texture in silicon steel sheets has been studied during this half of century and the methods for forming the textures suitable as the soft-magnetic materials of [l brace]110[r brace][l angle]001[r angle] as well as [l brace]100[r brace][l angle]001[r angle] have been found. However, few researches has been carried out on the silicon steel using positively the innate properties of the steel such as the transformation between the austenite ([gamma]) and [alpha]-ferrite and the recrystallization in the coexisting area of [alpha]/[gamma] duplex. In this study, the isothermal [alpha][yields][gamma] transformation during the process of vacuum-annealing and decarburizing-annealing of 2% silicon steel containing carbon and Mn and the texture formation accompanied therewith are examined. The conclusions are as follows. The isothermal [alpha][yields][gamma] transformation occurs in the layer just below the surface and the structure of the surface becomes the single phase of [alpha]-ferrite in the vacuum of 10[sup -3]Pa and the temperature is kept constant within the range of [alpha]/[gamma] duplex temperature or [gamma]-phase temperature as from 850 to 1050 centigrade. This surface structure develops to the strong [l brace]100[r brace] texture. 12 refs., 8 figs., 2 tabs.

Full Text Available Abstract Background Patients with schizophrenia and their families have suffered greatly from stigmatizing effects. Although many efforts have been made to eradicate both prejudice and stigma, they still prevail even among medical professionals, and little is known about how contact with schizophrenia patients affects their attitudes towards schizophrenia. Methods We assessed the impact of the renaming of the Japanese term for schizophrenia on clinical residents and also evaluated the influence of contact with schizophrenia patients on attitudes toward schizophrenia by comparing the attitudes toward schizophrenia before and after a one-month clinical training period in psychiatry. Fifty-one clinical residents participated. Their attitudes toward schizophrenia were assessed twice, before and one month after clinical training in psychiatry using the Implicit Association Test (IAT as well as Link’s devaluation-discrimination scale. Results The old term for schizophrenia, “Seishin-Bunretsu-Byo”, was more congruent with criminal than the new term for schizophrenia, “Togo-Shitcho-Sho”, before clinical training. However, quite opposite to our expectation, after clinical training the new term had become even more congruent with criminal than the old term. There was no significant correlation between Link's scale and IAT effect. Conclusions Renaming the Japanese term for schizophrenia still reduced the negative images of schizophrenia among clinical residents. However, contact with schizophrenia patients unexpectedly changed clinical residents’ attitudes towards schizophrenia negatively. Our results might contribute to an understanding of the formation of negative attitudes about schizophrenia and assist in developing appropriate clinical training in psychiatry that could reduce prejudice and stigma concerning schizophrenia.

  1. Oxygen Attachment on Alkanethiolate SAMs Induced by Low-Energy Electron Irradiation

Reactions of 18O2 with self-assembled monolayer (SAM) films of 1-dodecanethiol, 1-octadecanethiol, 1-butanethiol, and benzyl mercaptan chemisorbed on gold, were studied by the electron stimulated desorption (ESD) of anionic fragments over the incident electron energy range 2–20 eV. Dosing the SAMs with 18O2 at 50 K, results in the ESD of 18O− and 18OH−. Electron irradiation of samples prior to 18O2 deposition demonstrates that intensity of subsequent 18O− and 18OH− desorption signals increase with electron fluence and that absent electron pre-irradiation, no 18O− and 18OH− ESD signals are observed, since oxygen is unable to bind to the SAMs. A minimum incident electron energy of 6–7 eV is required to initiate the binding of 18O2 to the SAMs. O2 binding is proposed to proceed by the formation of CHx−1• radicals via resonant dissociative electron attachment and non-resonant C–H dissociation processes. The weaker signals of 18O− and 18OH− from short-chain SAMs are related to the latter’s resistance to electron induced damage, due to the charge-image dipole quenching and electron delocalization. Comparison between the present results and those for DNA oligonucleotides self-assembled on Au [Mirsaleh-Kohan, N. et al. J. Chem. Phys. 2012, 136, 235104] indicates that the oxygen binding mechanism is common to both systems. PMID:23537075

Iranian Journal of Child Neurology 2011;5(4:21-24.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to investigate serum thyroid hormone levels in epileptic children receiving anticonvulsive drugs.Materials & MethodsIn this case- control study, 30 epileptic children who were receiving anticonvulsive drugs (case group were compared with 30 healthy children (control group. This study was carried out in the Qazvin Children's Hospital (Qazvin, Iran from October to December 2007. Both groups were matched for age and sex. Thyroid hormone levels were measured using a radioimmunoassay and immunoradiometric assay. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and Student's t-tests.ResultsThe mean serum T3 and T4 levels in the case group were 2.36 ± 0.73 nmol/L and 95.96 ± 27.01 nmol/L, respectively, and the corresponding values in the control group were 1.88 ± 0.93 nmol/L and 147.46 ± 35.77 nmol/L, respectively. The mean serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH levels in the case and control groups were 2.73±0.73 mIU/mL and 2.49 ± 2.17mIU/mL, respectively.ConclusionThis study revealed that long-term consumption of anticonvulsive drugs resulted in a decline in serum T4 levels and an increase in serum T3 levels, but had no effect on TSH levels. 1. prescribed and also by using the free amount of thyroidhormones, the researcher will be able to exclude the TBG effect. In addition, ageis an important factor which should be considered. The epileptic patients showextra-thyroid adverse effects such as vitamin D and bone metabolism disordersdue to antiepileptic drugs (7. Other secondary clinical disorders which interactwith the thyroid metabolism should be considered and overruled in the study withthe mentioned proposal, especially in the older population. It appears that the confounding effect of the duration of AED intake mustbe adjusted regarding the children’s age using multivariate analysis such asregression model or partial correlation test. The etiological mechanism of serumconcentrations of thyroid hormone change by AEDs has not been clarified clearlyand besides, patients with a personal or family history of thyroid disorders mayprogress to overt thyroid hormone imbalance secondary to AED consumption (6. Therefore, it is suggested that the pure etiologicalmechanism of thyroid disorders due to AEDs shouldbe studied in such cases. Previous reports suggestedthat return to normal of all parameters was observedafter withdrawal of anticonvulsive therapy and thisreversibility of the thyroid hormone imbalance may bea clue for further investigations in order to study thepatho-physiologic mechanism of this disorder (6.Recently, new pharmaceutical drugs have beensuccessfully used for epileptic patients. It is expectedthat the therapeutic role of these new medications willbecome more prominent in these patients in the futureand future studies should be focused on their adverseeffects.Disclosures: None. References: 1. In addition, 37 febrile children without seizures comprised the control group. Serum melatonin levels were measured and compared between all groups.ResultsThe serum melatonin levels in the simple, complex FSs, and epilepsy groups were 2, 2.4, and 2 pg/ml, respectively. The serum melatonin level in the control group was 2.1pg/ml.Moreover, there were no significant differences observed while comparing the case groups.ConclusionThe present study reveals that there is no association between serum melatonin level and simple or complex FS and epilepsy. It appears that melatonin plays no significant role in these convulsive disorders. ReferencesBanerjee TK, Hazra A, Biswas A, Ray Jet al. Neurological disorders in children and adolescents.
