Full Text Available Death is inevitable and will occur to every living creature, including humans no mater what religion or belief they have; however, no one knows for sure when it happens. Humans can only predict death based on indicators that can be seen before it occurs. Still until now, there are many people who attempt to oppose death, even though in the end they have to admit that Allah is the Almighty. Therefore, no wonder if the death is still considered a tragedy rather than the culmination of happiness when humans finally harvest of deeds they have done all their life. In this light, death rituals are often accompanied by the tears of the family of the deceased, even some cry hard to express their pain as someone they love is gone, coupled with the arrival of relatives and acquaintances who mourn, and condolences as well as the phrase “inna lillâh wa inna ilaihi raji’ȗn”. A day of joy has turned into a day of sorrow, although it always ends with kendurian (gathering for remembering the dead, whose excitement is like that of selamatan (communal feast and syukuran (celebration of thankfulness. This paper tries to present the infiltration of religion and culture in the death ritual in Pontianak Malay community as an object of discussion of local wisdom by using mafhȗm mukhâlafah approach, to provide a new understanding of the meaning of death.

A general scheme of INAA used in the Laboratory of Radiometric Methods of the INCT as well as present status of equipment and software serving for processing and interpretation of gamma-ray spectra have been presented. Sequential stages of multielement analysis were described, especially those were potential systematic and random errors that might affect the analysis reliability could be expected. Conclusions estimating the possibilities of INNA analyses carried out at present conditions have been drawn as well as future needs concerning both equipment and software serving for large-scale multielement routine analyses have been pointed out. In an animal model study, we exposed rats to mercuric chloride through drinking water continuously for eight to ten months. A group of these rats were then taken off mercuric chloride water and fed distilled water. A control group of rats was given distilled water. Rat brain, spinal cord, and kidney were analyzed to determine Hg and nine other elements by INAA. Significant imbalances were detected among the groups. Most of the mercury (Hg) was found to be eliminated from the tissues studied within the first thirty days. Implications of the data are discussed in light of observed trace element imbalances in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. (author) 25 refs.; 1 fig.; 3 tabs

Full Text Available W kształtowaniu przestrzeni zazwyczaj przyjmowane są standardy wynikające z przyjętych powszechnie rozwiązań mających zaspokajać ludzkie potrzeby. Niestety często środki okazują się ważniejsze niż cele. Dążąc do zapewnienia mobilności i jednocześnie ochrony przed uciążliwościami transportu ogromne przestrzenie przeznacza się na wyalienowane z otoczenia trasy komunikacyjne i przestrzenie izolujące. Są jednak inne rozwiązania. Spektakularnym przykładem jest Wenecja – miasto, którego spora część jest niedostępna dla samochodów. Zatem pozbawiona jest związanych z ich obecnością uciążliwości, ale także możliwości wykorzystania ich w wielu różnych celach. W Wenecji w rolach w większości świata zarezerwowanych dla samochodów występują różnego rodzaju łodzie i statki. Warto zwrócić uwagę na szereg codziennych sytuacji z funkcjonowania części Wenecji pozbawionej samochodów. Zastępuje je nie tylko transport wodny, ale także pieszy. Znaczenie dla codzienności Wenecji ma także kameralna skala pieszych placów i uliczek. Wenecja boryka się z problemem utraty mieszkańców wypieranych przez turystów, oraz wypierania funkcji służących mieszkańcom przez przeznaczone dla turystów. Jednakże te problemy nie powinny dyskredytować organizacji przestrzeni w mieście. Są one bowiem skutkiem ubocznym sukcesu turystycznego wynikającego z wyjątkowej jakości miejsca. Przykłady rozwiązań opartych na odrzuceniu podporządkowania przestrzeni samochodom można znaleźć także w wielu innych miejscowościach, na terenie których odrzucenie dominacji samochodu nie przybrało takiej skali jak w Wenecji. Przykłady można znaleźć także w Polsce. Inne relacje przestrzenne powodują inne relacje między różnymi użytkownikami, a także inne relacje między przebywaniem w mieście, a przemieszczaniem się przez nie.

Rubidium concentration of erythrocyte of healthy children aged from 6-11 years living in four areas of Sichuan Province with different selenium status was measured by PIXE and the results show that the Rb concentration in erythrocyte for the Keshan Disease area is two times more than other three areas. Meanwhile the glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) activity of erythrocyte was determined and the results confirm that children in the Keshan Disease area are really with selenium deficiency. The Rb contents in rice and soil samples from the Keshan Disease area and the Se-deficiency area but with Se-supplementation to the inhabitants, were tested by INNA. It was found that Rb contents in rice and soil from the former area were much higher than those from the latter. This result indicates that Rb in erythrocyte of children is mainly taken from staple food (rice) and that a higher Rb level in soil is probably another environmental factor causing the Keshan Disease

Fifteen lacustrine sediments, sampled during the 1994-1995 Austral summer in Northern Victoria Land (Antarctica), were characterised by 57 Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy, instrumental neutron activation analysis and X-ray diffraction. These sediments are related to the intrusive rocks from Granite Harbour, to the metamorphic rocks of the Complex of Wilson Terrane and the volcanic rocks from Mc Murdo. The samples contain quartz, alkaline feldspars, plagioclases, amphiboles, biotite, chlorite and muscovite except for the sediments of volcanic origin that contain alkaline feldspars, plagioclases and pyroxenes. The paramagnetic components of the Moessbauer spectra were assigned mainly to the iron sides in biotites except for those displayed from the sediments of volcanic origin assigned mainly to pyroxenes. Moessbauer spectra at room temperature do not display magnetic ordering except for those of the sediments of volcanic origin containing bulk magnetite, hematite and goethite. Moessbauer spectra collected at the liquid helium temperature always exhibit magnetic ordering. This spectral difference has been attributed to the different dimensions of the iron oxide particles in the sediments. The scarce weathering involves a partial transformation of magnetite in hematite and goethite in the sediment of volcanic origin. In the remaining sediments a partial hydrolysis of biotite together with a partial oxidation of iron (II) retained in silicates is present. (authors)

The technique was developed as far back as 1936 by G. Hevesy and H. Levy for the analysis of Dy using an isotopic source. Approximately 40 elements can be analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INNA) technique with neutrons from a nuclear reactor. By applying radiochemical separation, the number of elements that can be analysed may be increased to almost 70. Compared with other analytical methods used in environmental and industrial research, NAA has some unique features. These are multi-element capability, rapidity, reproducibility of results, complementarity to other methods, freedom from analytical blank and independency of chemical state of elements. There are several types of neutron sources namely: nuclear reactors, accelerator-based and radioisotope-based sources, but nuclear reactors with high fluxes of neutrons from the fission of 235 U give the most intense irradiation, and hence the highest available sensitivities for NAA. In this paper, the applications of NAA of socio-economic importance are discussed. The benefits of using NAA and related nuclear techniques for on-line applications in industrial process control are highlighted. A brief description of the NAA set-ups at CERT is enumerated. The relationship of element contents in erythrocyte with thyroid function

The serum thyroid hormones (T 3 , T 4 , TSH, FT 3 and FT 4 ) level and the elements K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se and Rb in the erythrocyte in 76 cases is measured by radiometric assay in vitro (RIA and IRMA) and nuclear analytical technique (PIXE and INNA). According to thyroid hormones level, the cases are divided into four groups with hyperthyroid, normal, subhyperthyroid and hypothyroid. The difference and correlation of various parameters in four groups are compared by Oneway-ANOVA and Partial Correlation using SPSS/PC statistical package respectively. The results show that the content of Zn for hypothyroid group is significantly higher than hyperthyroid (P = 0.007) and sub-hyperthyroid (P = 0.046) groups, and the content of Zn for normal is lower than hypothyroid group but not significant difference (P = 0.083), the other elements contents are no significant difference among four groups. The highly significant linear correlation between the contents of K, Zn and Cu in the erythrocyte and T 3 , T 4 level ratio and TSH level is observed in hypothyroid and normal groups, the close correlation between the content of Se and serum T 4 and TSH level is also observed in hyperthyroid and sub-hyperthyroid groups. These suggest that trace elements may be important for the synthesis, metabolism and biological function of thyroid hormones

Full Text Available Andrey E Dorofeyev1, Elena A Kiriyan2, Inna V Vasilenko1, Olga A Rassokhina1, Andrey F Elin11National Medical University, Donetsk, Ukraine; 2Gastroenterological Center of Poltava Hospital Clinic, Poltava, UkraineObjectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical efficacy and cytomorphologic changes of colon mucosa following the treatment of patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS with mesalazine (5-aminosalicylic acid [5-ASA].Methods: In this controlled, randomized, blind clinical trial, a total of 360 patients with varying subtypes of IBS were randomly treated with 500 mg of mesalazine qid or by standard therapy without mesalazine for a period of 28 days. Pre- and post-treatment pain intensity, pain duration, meteorism, stool abnormalities and endoscopic parameters were monitored, and biopsies or brush biopsies were examined histologically.Results: Treatment of IBS patients with mesalazine significantly reduced intensity and duration of pain in all subtypes of IBS, except for duration of pain in the subtype “undifferentiated”, where the difference was not significant. In addition, in patients with diarrhea type and undifferentiated type of IBS, mesalazine also significantly reduced the abnormal stool pattern. In comparison to the control group, administration of mesalazine reduced the incidence of endoscopic and cytomorphologic changes of the bowel mucosa, including changes in colon mucus, mucus production, cytologic or histologic parameters, epithelial cell degeneration, appearance of leukocytes and macrophages and cell infiltrations.Conclusion: Mesalazine was effective in reducing several symptoms characteristic of IBS. It significantly reduced pain intensity and duration and improved cytohistologic parameters of the bowel mucosa.Keywords: 5-amino salicylic acid, 5-ASA, abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, IBS, meteorism, stool abnormalities

Zespół nakładania astmy i przewlekłej obturacyjnej choroby płuc

Full Text Available Astma i przewlekła obturacyjna choroba płuc (POChP to zapalne choroby dróg oddechowych, które łączy obecność ograniczenia przepływu powierza przez drogi oddechowe podkreślane w ich definicji. Zapalenie, które leży u podłoża obu chorób, różni się jakościowo rodzajem przeważających komórek i głównych mediatorów zapalnych. Inna jest też na ogół odpowiedź na leki rozszerzające oskrzela w astmie i POChP. Pomimo tych różnic i znaczących odrębności naturalnego przebiegu, rokowania i patogenezy właściwe rozpoznanie obu chorób w praktyce jest trudne, a niekiedy nawet niemożliwe z powodu nakładania się cech astmy i POChP u tego samego pacjenta. Wraz z upływem lat u części chorych na astmę dochodzi do utrwalenia się obturacji, a wielu pacjentów z POChP wykazuje istotną reaktywność oskrzeli i częściową odwracalność obturacji. Nawet profil zapalenia w ciężkiej astmie może zmieniać się na podobny do obserwowanego w POChP, a zaostrzenie POChP przebiega niejednokrotnie z większym udziałem eozynofilów. Głównej przyczyny takiego współwystępowania obu schorzeń (zespołu nakładania upatruje się we wspólnych czynnikach ryzyka i fakcie, że sama astma może zwiększać prawdopodobieństwo wystąpienia POChP. Powszechność zjawiska zmusza do wypracowania skutecznych metod zapobiegania rozwojowi zespołu nakładania, lepszego różnicowania obu chorób, a w przypadku ich współistnienia – do poszukiwania optymalnych sposobów postępowania i leczenia.

Najważniejsze wnioski są następujące: (i rodziny językowe mogą być zróżnicowane na podstawie modeli powinowactwa i pokrewieństwa, dlatego też te modele mogą być uważane za silne wskaźniki genetycznej przynależności, oraz (ii modele dla cechy „siostrzeńcy i siostrzenice (= dzieci rodzeństwa”, „rodzeństwo” i „rodzeństwo przyrodnie” - czyli wszystkie cechy, w tym rodzeństwa - są najlepszymi przesłankami genetycznej przynależności, ponieważ są znacznie częściej używane w profilach niż jakakolwiek inna funkcja.

Full Text Available The Shaping of Polish Identity in the “Dziennik Kijowski” in 1914-1916 The First World War was a real catalyst for the shaping of national identities in Eastern Europe. Like all wars, it aroused discussions about the future of peoples caught up in the conflict, especially those who did not possess their own statehood. The Polish nation was among them. How did its political elite respond to the beginning of the Great War in Europe, what was discussed and what topics raised by the Polish newspapers, how Poland’s future and Polish identity was seen and determined at that time? In this article I try to answer these questions by analyzing political, social and literary materials in the Polish daily Dziennik Kijowski published in Kyiv in 1906-1920. Based on archival sources, publications of the Dziennik, analysis of the censuses, and historiography, this publication depicts the “Polish Kyiv”, reflects on various opinions about the newspaper’s editorial policies during the war, and defines the main topics that were elaborated by the Dziennik in 1914-1916 regarding Polish identity issues. During this period the newspaper, as well as the majority of members of the Polish community in Kyiv, was loyal to the Russian authorities. At the same time, the Dziennik Kijowski constantly reminded its readers what the Polish identity meant not only by the mere fact that the newspaper was published in the Pollish language, but also by the Polish matters as the contents of its columns.   Kształtowanie polskości na łamach „Dziennika Kijowskiego” w latach 1914-1916 Pierwsza wojna światowa stała się prawdziwym katalizatorem kształtowania tożsamości narodowych w Europie Wschodniej. : semantyka, transformacje strukturalne (na przykładzie jednej grupy tekstów W kontekście badań typologii dynamicznej oraz cech dialektalnych białoruskiej pieśni ludowej rozpatrujemy paradygmat tekstów dotyczących epizodu rozstawania się panny młodej z rodzicami. Są to teksty o tym samym podłożu leksykalno-poetyckim, które charakteryzuje wspólny typ incipitu w różnych jego wariantach. Wszystkie one symbolizują dramatyczny dla panny młodej moment „wtargnięcia” na jej podwórko „obcego” rodu – rodu narzeczonego. Metafora ta zawarta jest w formule incipitu. Warianty formuły zanotowano na znacznym obszarze Białorusi oraz na terenach przygranicznych (Łotwa, Polska. Transformacje strukturalne tego typu incipitów polegają na redukcji lub rozrastaniu (afiksacji składu sylabowego wersolinii. Wszystko to jest uwarunkowane semantyką pozawerbalną, wyrażoną przez rytmikę wokaliczną – z przewagą albo elementów deklamacyjności, albo dynamiki motoryczno-somatycznej. Charakterystyczne jest również poszerzenie wersu incipitu za pomocą dodawania do początkowego wyrazu synonimu rymowanego. Diachronia tekstów danego paradygmatu ujawnia się także przy zestawieniu tekstów tematycznie związanych z tymże epizodem wesela. Spora liczba tych tekstów przedstawia wersję skróconą – środkowy i końcowy fragmenty – tekstu pierwotnego danej grupy. Pieśń w wersji skróconej rozpoczyna się od punktu kulminacyjnego, z pominięciem metaforyczno-narracyjnej części wstępnej. Odpowiednio rolę incipitu pełni tu inna strofa. Teksty w wersji skróconej lokalizują się na peryferiach areału. Metodę dynamicznej typologii pieśni stosujemy do opisu tekstów różnych gatunków, o różnej tematyce, jednak należących ściśle do tego samego paradygmatu sylabo-ryt­micznego. Otwiera to nowe perspektywy w badaniach dialektów lingwo-muzycznych oraz zmian diachronicznych w języku pieśni ludowej.

EDITORIAL: Focus on Carbon Nanotubes

The study of carbon nanotubes, since their discovery by Iijima in 1991, has become a full research field with significant contributions from all areas of research in solid-state and molecular physics and also from chemistry. This Focus Issue in New Journal of Physics reflects this active research, and presents articles detailing significant advances in the production of carbon nanotubes, the study of their mechanical and vibrational properties, electronic properties and optical transitions, and electrical and transport properties. Fundamental research, both theoretical and experimental, represents part of this progress. The potential applications of nanotubes will rely on the progress made in understanding their fundamental physics and chemistry, as presented here. We believe this Focus Issue will be an excellent guide for both beginners and experts in the research field of carbon nanotubes. It has been a great pleasure to edit the many excellent contributions from Europe, Japan, and the US, as well from a number of other countries, and to witness the remarkable effort put into the manuscripts by the contributors. órego od 2013 r. badana jest sytuacja socjolingwistyczna gwar na współczesnej Łotwie. Analizowane są przynajmniej trzy gwary w obrębie każdego z dialektów. Pojęcie granicy ma jednak zastosowanie do opisu innych aspektów badań dialektologicznych. Można na przykład mówić o granicy między zachowaniem cech dialektów a wpływami języka literackiego, jak również o granicach podtrzymywania cech gwarowych w mowie użytkowników należących do różnych grup wiekowych. Badaniu poddano także kwestię używania gwar w centralnych i peryferyjnych częściach rejonu ich występowania. Wstępne wyniki sugerują, że ludzie mieszkający dalej od centrum używają gwary częściej – zwłaszcza w komunikacji z członkami rodziny (w tym z młodszego pokolenia, z krewnymi i z sąsiadami. Wstępne wyniki badań wskazują także na zróżnicowaną sytuację poszczególnych dialektów. Na obszarze występowania gwar dialektu środkowego, najbliższego literackiej łotewszczyźnie, niemal zanikło rozgraniczenie między gwarami a językiem literackim, skoro różnicy takiej nie odczuwają sami informatorzy. W dialekcie liwońskim występuje kilka cech dialektalnych, obecnych jeszcze w większym lub mniejszym stopniu w mowie wszystkich pokoleń, jak uogólnienie rodzaju męskiego czy redukcja wygłosu. Jednakże i tutaj język, którym posługują się młodsi użytkownicy, stopniowo traci cechy dialektalne. Inna sytuacja panuje w grupach gwarowych dialektu górnołotewskiego. Gwary seloń­skie z Semigalii wykazują ślady cech dialektalnych (tonalność sylab, nieregularne przesu­nięcia samogłosek itd.; występują one przede wszystkim w mowie starszego pokolenia. Gwarami łatgalskimi z Widzeme posługują się z kolei głównie starsi respondenci, zwykle w gronie najbliższej rodziny; gwar tych praktycznie nie słyszy się natomiast w przestrzeni publicznej. Wiele cech dialektalnych zachowało się tu jednak także w mowie średniego, a nawet młodszego pokolenia

Do najważniejszych cech takiej podsadzki hydraulicznej zaliczyć należy wypełnienia uprzednio wydzielonej pustki poeksploatacyjnej, materiałem o jak najmniejszej ściśliwości oraz o jak największej wodoprzepuszczalności. Materiał taki, po odprowadzeniu wody ma stanowić mechaniczna podporę stropu, a proces podsadzania jest ściśle powiązany z procesem eksploatacji, jako sposób likwidacji zrobów. Najczęściej stosowanymi materiałami są piasek podsadzkowy oraz odpady górnicze lub hutnicze (Lisowski, 1997). Od ponad dwudziestu lat, w polskim górnictwie węgla kamiennego obecna jest również inna technologia podsadzkowa, w której do transportu materiałów wykorzystywana jest woda. W tym przypadku części stałe to materiały drobnoziarniste, najczęściej popioły różnych typów, które po wymieszaniu z wodą tworzą zawiesinę (stąd termin "zawiesiny popiołowo-wodne"). Polska norma PN-G-11011:1998 wyróżnia dwie odmiany takich zawiesin i definiuje je, jako "podsadzkę zestalaną" oraz "mieszaninę do doszczelniania zrobów". Podstawową ideą przyświecającą stosowaniu zawiesin drobnoziarnistych w technologiach górniczych była początkowo troska o zagospodarowaniu odpadów energetycznych, a następnie górniczych (Mazurkiewicz i in., 1998; Piotrowski i in., 2006; Piotrowski, 2010; Plewa i Mysłek, 2000; Plewa i Sobota, 2002). Obecnie technologia zawiesinowa na stałe zagościła w kopalniach węgla kamiennego stając się m.in. nieodzownym środkiem profilaktyki pożarowej i metanowej (Dziurzyński i Pomykała, 2006; Palarski, 2004; Pomykała, 2006).
