    A systems based approach will be used to evaluate the nitrogen delivery process. This approach involves principles found in Lean, Reliability, Systems Thinking, and Requirements. This unique combination of principles and thought process yields a very in depth look into the system to which it is applied. By applying a systems based approach to the nitrogen delivery process there should be improvements in cycle time, efficiency, and a reduction in the required number of personnel needed to sustain the delivery process. This will in turn reduce the amount of demurrage charges that the site incurs. In addition there should be less frustration associated with the delivery process.

    Full Text Available The Oil & Gas sector relies mainly on the maritime transport to ship large volumes of petroleum and products. In this sense, this paper proposes a mixed integer linear model whose objective is to determine the coastal navigation fleet size and the type of vessels to transport clean petroleum products of real company. The model’s outcome helped programmers define how many ships are actually required to meet the commitments undertaken within a pre-established planning horizon. Comparing the model’s result with the actual number of vessels available for programming, one can eventually release ships to make other journeys, thus avoiding the hiring of ships in Voyage Charter Party for this last purpose. It is also possible to reduce the demurrage in periods of low movement, when the fleet contracted becomes oversized.

    In today's competitive business climate characterized by uncertain oil markets, responding effectively and speedily to market forces, while maintaining reliable operations, is crucial to a refinery's bottom line. Optimal crude oil scheduling enables cost reduction by using cheaper crudes intelligently, minimizing crude changeovers, and avoiding ship demurrage. So far, only discrete-time formulations have stood up to the challenge of this important, nonlinear problem. A continuous-time formulation would portend numerous advantages, however, existing work in this area has just begun to scratch the surface. In this paper, we present the first complete continuous-time mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation for the short-term scheduling of operations in a refinery that receives crude from very large crude carriers via a high-volume single buoy mooring pipeline. This novel formulation accounts for real-world operational practices. We use an iterative algorithm to eliminate the crude composition discrepancy that has proven to be the Achilles heel for existing formulations. While it does not guarantee global optimality, the algorithm needs only MILP solutions and obtains excellent maximum-profit schedules for industrial problems with up to 7 days of scheduling horizon. We also report the first comparison of discrete- vs. continuous-time formulations for this complex problem. (Author)

  13. Supplying the world : how Australia is meeting the coal infrastructure challenge?

    The Australian coal industry is an export oriented industry, meeting world needs as a secure, reliable and competitive supplier of high quality coal. It is also the world's largest exporter, with 30 per cent of world coal market. An overview of the Australian coal industry and the impacts of coal infrastructure bottlenecks were addressed in this presentation, with particular reference to demurrage; shipping costs; lost profit and income for coal companies; costs to end users; lost royalties; lost income for infrastructure providers; and higher shipping costs. Perspectives from 2002 were illustrated in graph format, including thermal and metallurgical coal prices; forecast for world coal imports; and forecasted global demand versus actual demand. Other contributing factors to capacity constraints include the underperformance of coal infrastructure supply chains and investment issues. Australia's infrastructure response required a coordinated response between the federal government, state government, mining companies, shippers and buyers, port authorities, Australian Rail Track Corporation, coal terminal operators, and private and public rail freight operators. The presentation concluded with a discussion of the Australian infrastructure response, such as supply side improvement strategies, demand management strategies, and investment in increased infrastructure capacity.     The Meat Processing Center of Santiago is located 13 kilometers from the city of the same name in the National Freeway. There, 61 heads of bovine livestock are sacrificed daily approximately around 325 Kg. of weight average and 197 pigs of 80 kg. of weight average, which has a demurrage average between 2 and 3 days in the corrals of the Meat Processing Center which generates a significant amount of excretes, rumen (food not digested by the bowels), bleed fluff, slops, meat residuals and fatty, as well as tripes, all that which constitutes a waste of a discharge at the present time loads pollutant that besides not taking advantage, for the maintenance of some appropriate norms of hygiene, the Meat Processing Center of meat by products is under the obligation of using big quantities of water, which constitutes an important factor of the elaboration cost. After that, the treatment in the plant and its final discharge in acceptable drains increase the general expenses. The big slaughterhouses can produce waste waters with a biochemical demand of oxygen of five days of 1300 ppm. The treatment of the waste and elimination of the waste waters coming from slaughterhouses and meat processing plants are an economic necessity and of public health. The main objectives of this work were: 1) To calculate the energy potentialities of the residuals of the productions pig, bovine and other residuals to transform them into energy and their effluents like organic fertilizer cleans of pathogen elements, by means of the process of anaerobic fermentation. 2) To Transform the Biomass into energy given by the different economic activities of the entity, taking advantage of the same one in the process. To achieve these results we have used the literature in this respect and the experience that exists in the province of Santiago from Cuba in this direction, as for the use of the residuals for the biogas production and to dedicate it to the cooking of food and the production of electric

    For too many years, problems associated with frozen coal have plagued the companies who mine it, the companies who handle it in transit and the utilities and other industrial concerns that finally burn it. But never before has the magnitude of the frozen coal problem been as great as it is today because of two primary factors, i.e. (1) the majority of coal currently transported and used has been ground to a very fine mesh that absorbs water readily, thus providing more surface area for freezing, and (2) the substantially increased importance of coal, indeed, the now critical necessity for more coal to be used in displacing dangerously uncertain foreign oil supplies that currently account for 50 percent of our daily domestic oil consumption. Frozen coal problems can and do have a devastating effect upon the ability to provide energy from coal during harsh winter months when it is not needed. The majority of these problems have been involved with removing frozen coal from rail cars. To allay the problem, numerous techniques have been tried, all with some measure of success. As an example, certain chemicals have been sprayed on the coal; another common treatment has been widespread use of thaw sheds, which, whether electrically or gas-fired, are all energy intensive, time consuming, hard on rail equipment and expensive to operate over long periods of time. From sledge hammers and crow bars to gas-fired jets and electric thaw sheds, available mechanical de-icing methods often damage coal handling equipment, are time consuming and, therefore, very expensive when demurrage losses must be added to significant investment and/or operating costs.

    Epidemiologic, comparative study of patients that entered to the Unit of Intensive Cares of the Quito Oncological Hospital SOLCA from January August 2005. There were determined the incidences of infections according to diagnostic, type of patient clinical, surgical or pediatric. The statistics tests used where percentages, Ji square, average, standard deviation and descriptive analysis. The clinical histories of all the patients of ICU were revised, the sheet of gathering data was filled. The Microbiology Service. A number of 331 patients entered to the unit including post surgical, clinical with different diagnostic; and pediatric surgical or clinical. Of these 19,63% (n: 64) were infected or were infected during their hospitalization. For the analysis they were contained in surgical 21% (13), clinical 71% (46) and pediatrics 8% (5). Their average age was of 51,33 years D S 21,9; the predominant sex was the feminine 60,9% (n:35). The demurrage average was of 7 days. The surgical patients where classified according to the surgery type in abdominal, thoracic, neurosurgery and other (head and neck or traumatology), significance didn't exist relating them with the surgery type, surgical time and infectious focus; the mortality in these patients was of 21,4% (n:3). The clinical patients where chose in relation with the association or not of chemotherapy and the presence of the infectious focus founding a 39,14% (n:18) of infection in those patients that didn't receive chemotherapy and 60,86% (n:28) with infectious focuses in the patients that received chemotherapy; the mortality in these patients were of 32,6%. In the pediatrics patients with infectious focuses severe, antibiotic extensive therapy didn't settle down direct relationship with the infection. The mortality was of 60%. The more frequent pathogens where Escherichia Coli with 19,2% Candida Albicans and other candida 14,6%, Staphylococcus aureus 8,2% , epidermidis 6,4%, Klebsiella pneumoniae 8,2%, oxytoca 2
