Experiment reveals the characteristics of low rank coal serving as a desulfurizing material in fluidized coal bed reactor with oxygen-containing functional groups exchanged with Ca ions. This effort aims at identifying inexpensive Ca materials and determining the desulfurizing characteristics of Ca-carrying brown coal. A slurry of cement sludge serving as a Ca source and low rank coal is agitated for the exchange of functional groups and Ca ions, and the desulfurizing characteristics of the Ca-carrying brown coal is determined. The Ca-carrying brown coal and high-sulfur coal char is mixed and incinerated in a fluidized bed reactor, and it is found that a desulfurization rate of 75% is achieved when the Ca/S ratio is 1 in the desulfurization of SO2. This rate is far higher than the rate obtained when limestone or cement sludge without preliminary treatment is used as a desulfurizer. Next, Ca-carrying brown coal and H2S are caused to react upon each other in a fixed bed reactor, and then it is found that desulfurization characteristics are not dependent on the diameter of the Ca-carrying brown coal grain, that the coal is different from limestone in that it stays quite active against H2S for long 40 minutes after the start of the reaction, and that CaO small in crystal diameter is dispersed in quantities into the char upon thermal disintegration of Ca-carrying brown coal to cause the coal to say quite active. 5 figs.

The objective of this study is to develop a new efficient desulfurization technique using a Ca ion-exchanged coal prepared from low rank coal and calcium raw material as a SO{sub 2} sorbent. Ion-exchange of calcium was carried out by soaking and mixing brown coal particles in milk of lime or slurry of industrial waste from concrete manufacture process. About 10wt% of Ca was easily incorporated into Yallourn coal. The ion-exchanged Ca was transformed to ultra-fine CaO particles upon pyrolysis of coal. The reactivity of CaO produced from Ca-exchanged coal to SO{sub 2} was extraordinary high and the CaO utilization of above 90% was easily achieved, while the conversion of natural limestone was less than 30% under the similar experimental conditions. High activity of Ca-exchanged coal was appreciably observed in a pressurized fluidized bed combustor. Ca-exchanged coal was quite effective for the removal of hydrogen sulfide. (NEDO)

An energy saving inverter type air-conditioner was introduced. It is important to increase the efficiency in the low capacity zone below the rated capacity to realize the energy saving. For the reduction of peak, improving the efficiency in the high capacity operation is also necessary. The power consumption in compressor and in inverter is about 90 % of the total power consumption in air-conditioner. The other 10 % are distributed to the fan motor and the control unit. For achieving the energy saving, the reduction of this 10 % part is also necessary because this 10 % part is constant regardless of the capacity of air-conditioner. The compressor motor was modified to the brushless DC motor with rotor position detecting device to improve the rotor structure and the position detection system. The heat exchanger was changed to a room heat exchanger with slit pattern. For the outdoor heat exchanger, the complex curvature blade fan was adopted. The control system of air-conditioner was changed. The PMV was previously learned and input in the microcomputer to calculate the data. Resultantly, the power consumption was reduced by about 20 % as compared with the conventional air-conditioner. 10 figs., 1 tab.

The compressor motor accounts for most of the consumption of electric power in an air conditioner. To promote energy-saving, Toshiba has been progressively changing the compressor motors in its air conditioners to high-efficiency brushless DC motors. We have now developed a new compressor motor in order to achieve even greater energy-saving. A concentrated winding system was adopted featuring direct winding on the teeth of the stator core, for the first time in the industry. As a result, it was possible to realize a high-efficiency, compact, lightweight, and low-cost motor. Moreover, by constructing a new system for production, we were able to improve productivity and quality. The newly developed motor is expected to contribute to the further diffusion of energy-saving air conditioners. (author)

High temperature and high pressure steam has been investigated for the high efficiency waste power generation technology development. The steam temperature below 300 centigrade is currently employed to avoid the corrosion of superheater, and the generating efficiency is less than 15%. Practical application of 500 centigrade and 100 kg/cm{sup 2} is planned by developing corrosion resistance materials. Environmental load reduction technology has been also developed. For the external circulation type fluidized bed furnace combustion tests using dummy waste in fiscal 1995, the temperature control at bag filter was effective for suppressing the dioxins. When using waste plastics, HCl could be reduced by blowing Ca compounds. Various Cr-Ni-Mo-based alloys have been developed as a corrosion resistance superheater tube material, and are currently tested. For the environmental load reduction technology, the development of pulse plasma exhaust gas treatment method has been continued from fiscal 1993. In fiscal 1995, this method was confirmed using a small-scale test unit, and also tested using a 5000 Nm{sup 3}/h bench-scale unit. The removal rates of dioxins at the outlet of bag filter were 99.8% and 99.3%, respectively. They were found to be affected greatly by the pulse waveform. 13 refs., 107 figs., 24 tabs.

It is thought that iron-based catalysts for coal liquefaction exercise their catalytic activity by forming pyrrhotite (Fe(1-x)S). However, there are still a lot of unknown problems remained concerning the formation and agglomeration behaviors of pyrrhotite. These make a difficulty for improving the activity of iron-based catalysts. In this study, sulfiding behaviors of {alpha}-iron oxyhydroxide ({alpha}-FeOOH) and {gamma}-iron oxyhydroxide ({gamma}-FeOOH) were investigated to reveal the formation and agglomeration behaviors of pyrrhotite. It was found that pyrrhotite was easily converted from ferric oxyhydroxide catalysts having large specific surface areas at the sulfiding temperature below 250{degree}C, and fine crystallites of pyrrhotite were formed at the initial stage of sulfiding. Crystal growth of pyrrhotite at the sulfiding temperature over 350{degree}C depended on the catalyst forms. It was also found that smaller crystallites of pyrrhotite were formed from {gamma}-FeOOH than from {alpha}-FeOOH and amorphous iron oxyhydroxide. 5 refs., 7 figs., 1 tab.

For higher-efficiency power generation cycle plants with less restrained conditions for a location, the conceptual design of an inter-cooled regenerative two-fluid cycle plant (ISTIG) was attempted using a modified aircraft gas turbine. A high-performance turbo fan engine is used for middle-class power generation. The first stage combustion gas drives the first stage turbine, and its exhaust gas is used for the second stage combustion. Because of two-axial type of high and low pressure, improvement of thermal efficiency is expected by easy-to-install inter-cooler. ISTIG superior in operability is suitable for medium load or distributed power generation facilities, and aims at higher efficiency of a 60% level. ISTIG includes a large amount of water vapor in combustion air by adopting a diffusion type combustor eliminating back fire, and can reduce exergy loss by preheating fuel gas. Since load of the high-pressure turbine shifts toward low-pressure one by the inter-cooler, some considerations are necessary for low-pressure side cooling together with reheating cycle. Because of unnecessary steam turbine, the construction cost per kW can be reduced by 20%. 41 refs., 64 figs., 27 tabs.

The purpose of this study is to prevent the deactivation of catalysts recycled in the 0.1 t/d bench scale unit (BSU). Catalysts recovered during reactions in the BSU and after reactions in the 5-liter autoclave were analyzed, to investigate the influences of the reaction condition on the property and activity of catalysts. Were used {gamma}-iron oxyhydroxide ({gamma}-FeOOH), {alpha}-iron oxyhydroxide ({alpha}-FeOOH), and natural pyrite (FeS2) as catalysts. At the S/Fe atomic ration of 1.2 under the BSU reaction condition, troilite was more easily formed from {gamma}-FeOOH compared with pyrite and {alpha}-FeOOH. As the reaction proceeded through the first, second, and third reactors, the crystal size increased, the pyrrhotite content decreased, and the troilite content increased. Deactivation due to the formation of troilite was irreversible. At the S/Fe of 3.0, however, both the formation of troilite and the crystal growth of pyrrhotite were not observed. It was found that the deactivation of catalysts can be remarkably suppressed. 5 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab.

This paper describes the research and development of power generation system by means of chemical-looping combustion. For this system, fuel flows in a reduction reactor and air flows in an oxidation reactor. These two flows are separated. As a result, recovery of CO2 without energy consumption, drastic improvement of power generation efficiency, and suppression of NOx emission are expected. To realize the above, two promising candidates, NiCoO2/YSZ and NiO2/NiAl2O4, have been found as recycle solid particles between the both reactors. These have excellent oxidation/reduction cycle characteristics. By these particles as well as the existing particle, NiO/YSZ, practical application of the chemical-looping combustion is realized. Besides LNG, coal and hydrogen were considered as fuels. When using coal or hydrogen, it was found that temperature of the reduction reactor should be increased the same as that of the oxidation reactor. This is a different point from a case using LNG as a fuel. 5 refs., 2 figs.

Survey and experimental research have been carried out on coal gasification using a pressurized internal circulation fluidized bed, spouted bed hydrogenation pyrolysis, supercritical water gasification, and a possibility of efficiency improvement by utilization of catalyst in chemical raw material production spouted bed gasification system. In the coal gasification using the pressurized internal circulation fluidized bed, an experiment was performed by using active alumina and Ni catalyst, where outstanding effect was identified. In the spouted bed hydrogenation pyrolysis, an experiment was executed by using iron hydroxide catalyst, but no noticeable effect was recognized. In the supercritical water gasification, an experiment was carried out by using Na{sub 2}CO2 and K{sub 2}CO{sub 3} catalysts, where it was found that the effect of the catalysts is little in the supercritical gasification reaction area of 800 degrees C. The power generation system composite with the chemical raw material production spouted bed gasification is a one-path system in which coal is gasified by the spouted bed gasification furnace, catalyst and steam are put into a heat exchanger to perform DME synthesis, and non-reacted gas is supplied as gas turbine fuel. Stabilization of the second harmonics in a laser-diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser and its application are described. The laser is a quantum noise limiting laser, in which a mode competing noise is generated from an interaction between the laser medium Nd:YAG and the type II nonlinear optical crystal KTiOPO{sub 4} when generating a second harmonics in the resonator. However, the quantum noise limiting second harmonics was obtained by means of inserting (1/4) wave length plate in the resonator to release the bond between two intersecting inherent polarization modes. This stabilized green laser is of a single lateral mode is nearly free of aberration. Therefore, an optical disc prototype having three times as much of the currently used density was made using an objective lens having high number of openings to collect lights, which was verified capable of regeneration at a high signal to noise ratio. In addition, higher output is possible by means of parallelizing the excitation, and high output is realized from edge excitation at a fiber bundle. 18 refs., 3 figs.

To cope with the energy issue and global environmental issue, it is necessary to forcibly promote energy conservation. In the light of the present situation that in Japan only 1/3 of the primary energy consumed is effectively used, policies are being prepared for promotion of the introduction of high efficiency thermal utilization systems including `a project for formation of the environmentally friendly type energy community` promoted by NEDO. However, it is hard to say that the introduction is being actively promoted. The cause is that they do not fully understood the present status of high efficiency thermal utilization systems, procedures for introduction, subsidy system, etc. Therefore, a manual was made to present to self governments and enterprisers who are planning to introduce the system. To be concrete, there are the six systems: cogeneration use thermal supply system, unused energy use thermal supply system, heat storage use thermal supply system, waste use thermal supply system, plant surplus energy use thermal supply system, and cascade type thermal supply system. 28 refs., 38 figs., 42 tabs.

In an ICFB boiler, the fluidized bed is separated by a partition into the main combustion and the heat recovery chambers. The flows in these chambers are generated by using silica sand as the fluidizing medium. To determine the overall heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of the boiler`s panel type immersed heat transfer tulles, combustion tests were performed with wire rim tires. The overall HTC of a panel tube array was lower than that of a zigzag tube arrangement. In practice, the heat absorbed by the fins makes the coefficients of either type of tube array almost identical. The air flow rate in the circulating bed at the loot Tom of the heat recovery chamber can be changed to control the overall HTC to a value virtually identical with that of a zigzag tube array. The combustion of wire rim tires leads to a buildup of wires in the zigzag array hampering the transfer of heat. Yet, the panel type array showed no buildup so that it was possible to maintain steady operation with this type of tube arrangement. 8 refs., 10 figs., 2 tabs.

In the milling sequence, Primary Roughing, which cut out 90% of the stock, should be more and more performable. So we established Tilt-Plunging and Curve-Fit Spiral Cutting techniques. These techniques will reduce lateral force to the tool, and make remains more small. With the techniques, we reduced both machining and NCdata preparing time to one half. 1 ref., 14 figs.

This promotion project on the cooperative research aims to efficiently extract and recover valuable metals (gold, silver, copper, rare metal, etc.) including in large quantity in tailings of ores in the Republic of Kazakhstan. In FY 1995, conducted were the field survey, support study in Japan, acceptance of researchers from Kazakhstan, conceptual design of pilot plant, etc. The ore/mineral for Cu is mainly an alteration ore of chalcopyrite. Au and Ag are low grade and unknown, and the main gangue mineral is pyrite. The low grade ore (waste/much) of the Nikolayevska mine has a tendency to leaching at normal temperature, but the ore of mostly chalcopyrite such as tailings from each place has difficulty in leaching. It gets leaching by increasing temperature. The more the temperature rises, the more conspicuous the reaction becomes. Further, chalcopyrite is leached with priority over pyrite. From the result, a technical potentiality was obtained of leaching of low grade chalcopyrite in tailings mostly of pyrite. The existence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was confirmed. As to the recovery method for Au and Ag, CIC is studied. The process of waste/much is solvent extraction, electrowinning study and leaching, and that of tailings is bacteria leaching and leaching study. (NEDO)

To introduce the power generation system fueled by animal waste (excrements), one of the so-called industrial waste, its feasibility has been studied in Koyu and surrounding area located in Miyazaki Prefecture. This report includes the technical feasibility of available quantity of animal waste, chemical analysis of the waste, and basic design of the power generation system containing the furnace model and also its economical feasibility. The available quantity of animal waste in Koyu area is about 169,000 tons a year, which can generate 10.5 MW of electric power. That including the surrounding area is about 219,000 tons a year, which can generate 15.0 MW. The heating values of animal excrements in average and as received are 970 kcal/kg for pigs and 1,230 to 2,700 kcal/kg for broilers. In the case of combustion of mixed broiler and pig excrements, both of the stoker and fluidized-bed model furnaces become refractory furnace construction and provide with heat recovery boiler due to their high moisture content. In addition, the stoker furnace model requires an excrement dryer system as pre-treatment of fuel. For the fluidized-bed furnace of 15 MW grade power plant using the mixed fuel of 50% broiler excrements and 50% pig excrements, the power generation efficiency of 23% can be expected at generator end. The generating cost is around 10 yen/kWh. 27 refs., 61 tabs.

The refuse-derived fuel (RDF) has been holding public attention not only as the energy resource of stable high calorific value for local energy development, but also as the effective method for waste treatment. As one of the effective utilization methods for waste treatment, this investigation was conducted to industrialize and establish the RDF power generation system, in which power generation and ash treatment are integrated in Tochigi Prefecture which is located inland. The base supply type was adopted as a way of operation from the menu of the electricity wholesale project of Tokyo Electric Power Co. and its rate of operation is 80 percent a year. Then, the fluidized bed combustion method, a dry exhaust gas treatment method, and continuous electric melting furnaces were decided as the RDF power generation system. According to this system, it is possible to obtain 26 percent gross thermal efficiency by conventional generation facilities. It was estimated that the expenses reduction for 15 years will be 17.6 billion yen compared with the ordinary combustion system. Also, the following effects can be expected; the reduction of CO2 emission, improvement of energy efficiency, and the extension of life of landfills capacity. 36 figs., 51 tabs.

For the purpose of reducing the coal consumption amount and reducing the emission amount of environmental pollutants, study of small stoker boilers in China was made in terms of sampling of the data on changes in boiler efficiency caused by combustion conditions and how to improve efficiency. As objects of survey, one boiler use plant in Beijing city and two in Taiyuan city, Shanxi province, were selected to make site survey on the state of installation and operational management of coal boiler. As a result of the actual measurement of boiler efficiency at the plants, the boiler efficiency was the maximum, about 76%, in Beijing city and the minimum, about 51%, in Taiyuan city. In China, the number of boiler with the Beijing city level was extremely small, and most of the boilers were the same as the Taiyuan city level. As a result of studying how to improve efficiency based on the survey results, the following were cited as the main measures for improvement: selection of coal by boiler type and supply of the secondary air, strengthening of the combustion management by controlling furnace pressure and air amount, etc. For the selection of coal, it is necessary to set up a system to be supported by the whole country or the whole department. The water/ethanol separation membrane (for ethanol selective permeation), although its separation coefficient is lower than the world's highest performance, has high permeation velocity, providing the performance of the worldwide level as seen from the comprehensive viewpoint. The carbon monoxide/nitrogen separation membrane achieved separation coefficient and permeation velocity of the world's highest level. The oxygen/nitrogen separation membrane requires further enhancement in the permeation velocity and stability. Establishment has been performed on separation technologies for membrane separation of non-water soluble aqueous solutions, optical division by using chiral crown ether, high-performance liquid separation by means of plasma surface treatment, and particle separation. Basic analysis has been advanced also on evaluation technologies for gaseous body separation membrane and liquid separation membrane, of which future progress is expected. (NEDO)

For the establishment of a low-temperature formation technology for compound semiconductor polycrystalline thin film of CuInSe{sub 2}, research is conducted involving film formation and film quality evaluation using the ICB (ion cluster beam) method. In the research on the film formation, an In-excessive film is placed on a Cu-excessive CuInSe{sub 2} film using the ICB method for the formation of a two-layer film. Bulk CuInSe{sub 2} and thin-film polycrystalline CuInSe{sub 2} are evaluated using PL (photoluminescence) spectrums excited by YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) and Ar. In both bulk and thin film, it is suspected that clues are latent in the levels deeper than hitherto reported. A luminescent belt of 0.75eV is detected. Changes in film quality before and after oxygen annealing are verified using the YAG-excited and Ar-excited PL spectrums, and the result suggests the feasibility of tracking the process in which the effect of annealing propagates inward from the interfacial surface. Fe-added single-crystal CuInSe{sub 2} is investigated for the optical and photoelectrical effects of Fe impurities. (NEDO)

Research is conducted on film formation technologies etc. for the chalcopyritic compound semiconductors represented by CuInSe{sub 2} which is the most excellent of the materials for thin-film solar cells. As for the development of a encapsulated selenization method, research is conducted on an In formation method, temperature program for heat treatment, and Cu-In alloy film selenization, and then a CuInSe{sub 2} film less to suffer phase separation is obtained. In the development of a vaporized selenization method, the reactor tube and the temperature program are improved, and this results in a CuInSe{sub 2} film excellent in homogeneity. As for the evaluation of CuInSe{sub 2} film, photoluminescence is measured using a solid-phase selenized film, vapor-phase selenized film, and 3-source vapor-deposited film, and the result shows that photoluminescence-assisted CuInSe{sub 2} film evaluation is quite promising. In the development of ZnO film formation technologies, the MOCVD (metalorganic chemical vapor deposition) technology is almost complete, and film formation on a 10cm-square substrate is now practical. Technological development is aimed at a 500MW class gas turbine plant with a generator-end efficiency of over 60%, while using a 1,700 degree C class ultra high temperature gas turbine by natural gas fuel and fully collecting CO{sub 2} in the exhaust gas through an oxygen combustion closed type system. The paper describes the results of fiscal 2000. A conceptual design was made on the basis of a tentatively set second mass and heat balance concerning the closed cycle that facilitated CO{sub 2} recovery by methane-oxygen combustion, with a system optimization method examined by parameter studies (sensitivity analysis of the effect of each parameter on the generator-end efficiency). Using the zero-th conceptual design implemented in fiscal 1999, the first mass and heat balance (generator-end efficiency 58%) and the results of parameter studies, the system optimization was continuously examined, deciding the second mass and heat balance. A calculation of 59.8% was obtained for the generator-end efficiency. Investigations and discussions have been given on energy saving possibilities at two medium-sized heat and power supplying plants in the city of Dailian in China. The project will improve the operation methods of the heat and power plants so that the energy cost can be minimized, and attempt to improve the boiler heat efficiency and save the energy by means of heat recovery and utilization. The draft modification plan for energy conservation has planned operation optimization for energy conservation, control of boiler operation under variable pressure, modification of the external boiler heat converter, use of inverters for the large capacity motors for boilers, and recovery of heat from the boiler blow-down water. In the analysis, models were structured from the operation data, and the effects of applying the energy saving measures were derived from simulation. As a result, the energy saving effect was found to be about 13,000 tons at the Chunhai plant and about 7,000 tons at the Pulandian plant annually (converted to oil). The reduction in greenhouse gas emission was found to be about 40,000 tons at the Chunhai plant and about 20,000 tons at the Pulandian plant annually. The number of years for investment payback is about 4.1 years at the Chunhai plant, and about 4.9 years at the Pulandian plant, wherein good profitability can be estimated. (NEDO)

We have developed a high efficiency L-lactate fermentation process employing the homofermentative lactic acid bacterium, Lactococcus lactis IO-1 with a pH-dependent substrate feed system in order to consume the substrate completely and maintain high activity of cell growth, production, and substrate consumption. Furthermore a pH-dependent substrate feed system was combined with turbidity control consisting of a laser probe and micro filter module for cell-recycling. With this system, we achieve a high efficiency L-lactate continuous culture. We are able to construct high efficiency bioconversion systems from xylose to P(3HB) via L-lactate and other organic acids because Lactococcus lactis IO-1 can utilize not only glucose but also xylose as a carbon source. Thus, we have developed a new substrate feed system which is able to automatically control substrate concentration in a broth. A new batch fermentative system for production of biodegradable plastic material, poly hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB)] from culture broth of Lactococcus lactis IO-1 is vealized. (author)

A technology is developed to perform high-efficiency power generation by generating high-temperature and high-pressure steam stably by burning general wastes and combustible industrial wastes as fuel. This paper describes summary of the achievements in fiscal 1998. Corrosion tests were performed on over-heater materials under steam condition of 500 degrees C and 100 kg/cm{sup 2} by using a hot model. It was verified by the tests that the corrosion environment around an external heat exchanger is milder than that with an external stack. A circulation fluid bed was simulated from operation data, and a prospect was obtained on steam conditions required for the high-efficiency power generation. In order to elucidate the corrosion mechanism, discussions were given on deposited ash properties, corrosion characteristics and stress. Elucidation was made on a discharge chamber structure most suitable for removing dioxins and NOx by using a waste gas treatment process that uses plasma generated by discharge. A concept design was made. The economic effect of the system is equivalent to that of the activated carbon blow-in process, whereas a waste gas treatment system was nearly completed. As a result of the pilot plant test, the power generation efficiency is estimated to be 30% in a scale of 1200 tons per 24 hours. A demonstration test revealed that dioxin emission was far below the regulation value. An optimal system was also discussed. (NEDO)

In order to realize more effective utilization of non-ferrous metal resources, joint research cooperation is made with the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is intended that valuable metals (gold, silver, copper, rare metals, and others) contained at large quantity in ore scraps generated in association with mine operation be extracted and recovered efficiently paying considerations to the environment. The treatment process consists of the following conception: raw materials such as ore scraps are leached by sulfuric acid and microorganisms to separate and recover gold and silver; the leach liquor containing valuable metals is extracted by using solvent and recovered of copper and rare metals via an electrolytic process; and the waste water is treated and discharged. The R and D programs were implemented to develop techniques for creating members of high-melting metals, having a very high melting point and potentially excellent high-temperature strength characteristics. These are expected to replace Ni-based superalloys for gas turbine members, to further increase operating temperature of the turbine. The programs were aimed to improve their high-temperature strength and toughness and hence their reliability by microscopically controlling their compositions and structures, and also aimed to improve their durability by coating them with a film capable of preventing oxidation and resisting to gas-induced corrosion to impart resistance to oxidation and corrosion to them. For the design of Nb-based solid solution alloys, it is found that dissolution of Mo at around 30 at.% or less and W at 20 at.% or less in Nb improves their high-temperature strength and toughness. For the design of high-strength Nb-based composite materials, it is found that Si-containing Nb-based composite materials, prepared by mechanical alloying, are amorphous or present in the form of solid solution of Ni supersaturated with Si. The R and D activities were also directed to development of techniques for creating Nb-based superhigh-temperature members, their evaluation, and imparting oxidation resistance to them. (NEDO)

High efficiency power generation, which is useful for promoting the environment-friendly type energy and coordinated community, is investigated by combining a steam turbine power generation system using the PS-RDF (paper sludge-refuse derived fuel) and a gas turbine (GT) combined cycle. Industrialization plan for processing PS in low cost has been made to ensure the profitability by participating the wholesale power supply under the law of electric power industry. This combined system is similar to the so-called super power generation using municipal garbage, but the lower temperature of steam from GT waste heat boilers (WHB) is super-heated by the flue gas from RDF boiler, which is called advanced power generation system (A.S.S.). The total power generation capacity is 149,000 kW, which consists of three 35,000 kW units of GT and one 44,000 kW unit of steam turbine. The R and D project has been implemented for novel high-performance forming machines (HPFMs) which handle slurry-based stock materials, in order to impart diversified functions to a wide range of ceramic-based materials covering from traditional to fine ceramic materials, and improve their productivity. For slip casting which uses traditional slurry stock materials, electricity is passed through the work by installing electrodes in each section, to control growth speed and composition of the layers, which are inconceivable by the conventional method for each section. For casting alumina slurry as the fine ceramic-based material, the electrophoretic techniques are also applied, in an attempt to form complex shapes at high efficiency, and to control the inclined structures and compositions/structures at specific sections. For development of the machines on a trial basis for traditional materials, reduction of weight and increasing thickness of the bottom side are attempted for hand-washing bowls, leading to weight reduction of 25% at the maximum. For fine ceramic-based materials, the forming systems are developed, on a trial basis, for fine pipes and sheets. (NEDO)

The paper described the FY 1993 results of the technology to create high efficiency power generation use members. A processing method was proposed in which to manifest magnetic characteristics up to the theoretical value level, crystallization of magnetic alloy amorphous was controlled and size/configuration of precipitated micro-fine crystals are made ideal. For the development of environmental purification use high functional catalysts, experiments were conducted on the heightening of purity of materials. Namely, by the two wavelength two stage excitation method using color laser, atomic beams of the material metal emitted by electronic beam evaporating source are photo-excited up near the ionization level. These are separated from the non-ionized components by electrostatic field application, and only the ionized atoms are vapor-deposited on substrate. The separation accuracy was good. Plasma excitation of raw gas was done independently for every component, and the multi-source excitation plasma CVD was proposed which is film-formed on the substrate of which the periphery was separately controlled. The synthesis method was considered of higher-order structure control high functional organic materials which are composed of electrode reaction/high grade photon/extreme magnetic field. Study was made of complex reaction field application film-forming/molecular orientation technology using a small test device. (NEDO)

For the purpose of energy conservation and environmental protection by effective utilization of unused waste heat, the R and D of thermoelectric conversion technology were conducted, and the FY 2000 results were summed up. In the investigative study of thermoelectric converting materials, evaluation was made of the materials having a possibility of achieving the target with the element efficiency of 6% and the assumed use temperature domain of 120-330 degrees C. The result of the study indicated that the number of new materials which were made public was increasing, but there were no materials that have evidently practical applicability. In the investigative study of element manufacturing technology, trial manufacture of element was made in which the investigative results were integrated into the existing 50W element manufacturing technology, and a target of 70W was achieved. In the investigative study of the thermoelectric conversion system for industrial and commercial/residential use, field survey and questionnaire survey were conducted for three fields of iron works, chemical plant and garbage disposal plant. As a result, it was found that there was a large amount of waste heat. By the study of the system conceptional design, it was found out that the output of 40-50kW can be obtained in the system structure suitable for the source of waste heat of iron works, etc. (NEDO)

This paper describes the achievements in fiscal 1998 on developing a high-efficiency human body measuring device. Object building with high compatibility is requested in recent years, and a high-precision and high-efficiency measuring device for three-dimensional human body shape data is demanded. The ultimate target for the device is high-precision measurement of about 1 mm in about one second which is the time for human being capable of staying immovable. In association with proliferation of product designing by using a computer, the needs for data handling on computers are increasing sharply in industries. Proposals have been made by ISO and CEN on the standards for morphological characteristics of human being, inducing progress in international standardization of human body size and shape data. Structuring a database is also planned on three-dimensional shape data mainly in the U.S.A. The Human Life Engineering Research Center is studying development of a measuring device to measure human body types and sizes at high speed and accuracy. The device combines three-dimensional measurement by using an optical method with high-performance computerized image processing. The measuring device is supposed to be capable of outputting the measurement results as the size and three-dimensional shape data, so that the results can be applied to product designing quickly. Research and development is conducted concerning technologies of creating high-melting point metal based members for the purpose of enabling gas turbines to withstand still higher temperatures. In the research which deals mainly with Nb, solid solution state is enhanced, high-temperature strength and tenacity are improved by enhanced composition and diffusion, and surfaces are modified in terms of resistance to oxidation and corrosion by the technologies of multi-layer coating and slope-structured coating. In the designing and evaluation of high-strength Nb based solid solution alloys, alloys excellent in high-temperature strength and room-temperature tenacity are obtained, which contain 5-30at% Mo and 5-15at% W. In the designing and evaluation of Nb based composite materials, it is found that it strengthens the composition of Nb based enhanced solid solution alloys to add Si to Nb alloys for the precipitation of silicides in the Nb based solid solution alloy matrices. This project is aimed at development of the technologies for producing ceramic- and metal-based composite materials, and also technologies for superplastic processing by utilizing the phenomenon of superplasticity. The methods studied for development of the ceramic-based composites include casting and powder-utilizing forming at low temperature, and melt forming at high temperature. Those for the metal-based composites include melting at normal and high pressure, powder metallurgy type mechanical alloying and alkoxide methods. The composites studied for development of the superplastic processing are the whisker- and particle-reinforced ones. The composite reinforced with silicon nitride/SiC whiskers is found to be electrophoretically cast to have a bending strength of 497MPa at 1,250 degrees C. The parts of simple shape, e.g., rod and disk, having the target strength are produced by isostatically pressing at normal temperature and high pressure (CIP) and subsequently firing the granules, produced by spray drying the TiC particle/alumina-based slurry. An investigational study was conducted on energy recovery (power generation) in disposal of industrial waste. The capacity of power generation facilities in incineration processing of industrial waste reached approximately 200,000kW (50 facilities) in the total nationwide. The incineration-processed waste is mainly chips of wood, waste tire and bagasse. Almost all the electric power is for non-utility use, and there are no examples of selling it outside. In the metropolitan area, there is only one example of the industrial waste incineration power generation in Tochigi prefecture. This is because there are extremely very few enterprises which are sources producing the waste as target. However, if the industrial waste market is targeted, there is a future. The industrial waste has a lot of disadvantages as power generation use fuel because of its diversification, but the use of it as fuel is technically easier than the use of the general waste as RDF. Accordingly, it can be used for power generation with no need of special technology or facilities. When picking up facilities with a potentiality of high efficiency power generation from the existing incinerators in operation of persons in charge of industrial waste processing, approximately 125,000 kW can be obtained only from remodeling of the existing facilities. This project studies the testing/evaluation methods for spreading fuel cells for automobiles. Described herein are the FY 2000 results. The problems involved in evaluation of the single cell units are classified into those involved in the cell construction and methods of evaluating the operation performances of the single cell units. These problems are analyzed mainly by literature survey. The mode simulation tests will be greatly simplified, if the system can be tested on the bench without being actually boarded on the vehicle. Therefore, this project is aimed at development of a comprehensive mode simulator which can be automatically operated corresponding to the running modes of various countries, to test the performance of FCEV and to examine the effects of each component independently on the vehicle performance. The factors required to reproduce the actual driving states of an FCEV on the bench are analyzed, and the conceptual designs are drawn for the controlling algorithms. It is necessary to standardize the stack and reformer testing methods, in order to evaluate the fuel cell system components. For these objects, the prototype units are constructed to evaluate 10kW direct hydrogen type stacks and 5kW methanol reformers. The units are also constructed to evaluate the high-pressure (1MPa) reformer reactors and hydrogen separation membrane systems. (NEDO)

The R and D project has been implemented for small-size gasification melting furnace and exhaust gas treatment system to develop a small-size industrial waste incineration system capable of coping with the new standards, which simultaneously incinerates the waste and treats the resultant ashes, to control evolution of dioxins and, at the same time, recover heat at high efficiency. The studied items include controlling evolution of dioxins by removing salts of heavy metals (e.g., copper) and quenching exhaust gases in a ceramic heat-exchanger, and development of the materials for filters and high-temperature mist separators serviceable under severe conditions. For building the systems, the plant comprising a pyrolysis/gasification melting furnace, high-temperature dust collector and ceramic heat exchanger is designed, constructed and continuously operated for an extended period. As a result, it has been confirmed that the system can be operated stably, evolution of dioxins can be controlled, self-heat recovery type system can be developed, and dust can be reduced in volume. Efforts are made for the creation of high melting point metal-base materials to replace the currently-used Ni-base superalloys for the turbine to withstand higher operating temperatures. The main efforts made in fiscal 1997 are outlined. As in fiscal 1996, Nb-base solution alloys, in which solution reinforcement elements such as Mo and W are alloyed, are manufactured by button arc melting and tested for mechanical properties and texture/characteristics. In the designing and evaluation for a strongest Nb-base composite material, Nb-base composite materials are manufactured by use of particle dispersion-strengthening attained by addition of intermetallic compounds or elements to contribute to the formation of oxides, carbides, or nitrides. Nb-base composite materials may also be manufactured by use of eutectic-strengthening attained by utilizing crystallization in the process of coagulation. The resultant Nb-base composite materials are evaluated for their dynamic characteristics at high temperatures. In the development and evaluation of technologies for creating Nb-base materials for high-temperature components, larger specimens as heavy as several kg are tested in line with small specimens for basic studies, and the results are utilized for alloy designing for high-temperature materials. 50 refs., 97 figs., 15 tabs.

As an energy conservation promotion measure, a project is under development for introducing and subsidizing high-efficiency energy systems and for letting their effect known publicly and widely. The number of proposed energy systems has increased greatly and technical divisions to follow in classifying them have become vague, from which problems are now arising over the execution of follow-up checks and the maintenance of fair treatment. In the effort to solve this problem, 376 propositions are analyzed and classified, a technical classification method is proposed, and an instruction manual on the method is compiled. The classification involves (1) proposed classification, (2) variation, (3) energy reduction rate, and (4) tentatively calculated cost. Item (1) deals with the basic classification (air-conditioning, ventilation, and hot water supply, and, to be considered in combination with them, options which are cooking, illumination, and others) and, item (2) covers eight items such as new/old construction, structure, and structural frame. In Chapter 1 of the report, the 376 propositions are put in order according to common classification items and an original classification table is prepared. In Chapter 2, the goals are clarified and the classification principles are defined. In Chapter 3, the classification is checked for its validity and some realistic ways of grouping are described. In Chapter 4, a classification implementation flow chart is shown. (NEDO)

The results of the study were as follows: The total primary energy consumption amount is reduced by 16.3-19.7% in the conventional heat insulation pipe method and by 19.2-20.6% in the vacuum heat insulation method. As to the environmental preservation, the CO2 reduction amount is 36.9-40.0%, and the NOx reduction amount is 43.7-45.5%, which indicated much more improvement than in the present situation. In the aspect of economical efficiency, the result indicated that in the case of the shortest piping, much economical efficiency is expected even without subsidies if considered of the carbon tax. Taking the Toyota-Kamo wide area as the object, wastes power generation is positioned over the society system as worked on by administrations and operators integrally to incinerate mixedly those incineratable materials such as plastics among general and industrial combustible wastes for high-efficiency generation of power, which is supplied to electric utility operators as surplus power. Discussions were given on the business feasibility and the effectiveness as a society system. In this area, the mixed model B plan (dealing with general wastes plus industrial wastes) was evaluated as an effective plan as the society system. This is because the plan has effect to incinerate, melt and generate power from industrial wastes which have been used for land-fill, effect of improving the power generation efficiency, and effectiveness of mixed treatment with general wastes. The plan A in which general wastes are made into RDF, then incinerated mixedly with industrial wastes for power generation was evaluated to have high reliability potential of power supply and to be an effective plan as a society system, if effect can be expected to reduce transportation energy as a result of making the system large enough and turning wastes into RDF. This project is implemented to save energy for drying bio-products (biological object organic substances), such as laver, fish and shellfish, shiitake mushroom and tobacco leaves, without deteriorating their flavor, taste, color and luster. In particular, it is aimed at development of high-efficiency drying devices friendly to these products, e.g., laver, and in harmony with energy-saving environments through creation of novel drying chambers and peripheral facilities around the heat exchanger, and elucidation of the drying processes of the organic substances. These devices can of course contribute to energy saving and environmental protection, and, at the same time, bring about the merit of easily controlling the three elements of the drying conditions precisely for the process of drying a specific organic substance. Moreover, the R and D project will help establish know-hows that allow the drying devices to diffuse into various areas for specific drying environments characteristic of region and product. The FY 1998 R and D efforts include (1) elucidation of the stepwise process for drying each product, (2) development of the algorithm for thermohydraulic elucidation of the system and drying process, (3) development of drying chambers for drying systems, and designing and fabrication of the optimum chamber shapes, and (4) evaluation of the energy flows and mass balances in the drying system. MHD generation is a very attractive power generation system such that efficiency is as high as 55%, that preservation of the environment is superior, and that coal can be used as fuel. The open cycle seems suitable for a one million kW class as a base load following up load fluctuation of approximately 20%, while the closed cycle for 200-300 thousand kW class doing daily start-stop. With a mind to a scale of 30 MWt, in the open cycle, R and D is required in such items as a coal gas combustor, generation channel, high temperature air heater, and seed/slag recovery device. In the closed cycle, R and D is required in the generation channel, high temperature helium heater/high temperature valve, seed injection/recovery device, operation technique of helium closed loop, etc.. Concerning the district in Osaka Prefecture selected for study in fiscal 1997, it is investigated whether energy efficiency is enhanced, and environmental impact reduced, by the introduction of element technologies, and the findings are compared with the results expected to be produced without their introduction. Problems about their introduction are also discussed. Taken up for study are the collection and utilization of heat from a water granulated slag manufacturing plant of an iron mill, exhaust heat reform and recovery system at a chemical plant, heat supply system driven by a high-performance heat pump capable of dealing with various kinds of fuels, compression/suction hybrid heat utilization system, and a cold heat supply system using microspheres. Annual energy consumption, CO2 and NOx emissions, and costs are calculated for each of them. Concerning these element technologies, various tasks are discussed, related to the technology of their systematization, economy, dissemination of district heat supply, and wide-area heat supply businesses utilizing exhaust heat. As the result, it is concluded that the primary energy consumption as a whole is reduced upon their introduction and that energy saving effect and environmental impact reducing effect are in presence. This project is aimed at development of technologies for effective utilization of power produced by polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) systems and waste heat, to spread cogeneration systems incorporating PEFC systems for residential purposes. Described herein are the FY 2000 results. The program for high-efficiency peripherals for residential PFEC systems attempts use of GaN-FET as the semiconductor device of wide band gap and high breakdown voltage to realize conversion efficiency over 90% by improving inverter efficiency. Two types of the prototype heat recovery systems are developed for the PEFC, one incorporating a latent heat cooling system and the other a water cooling system, to improve heat recovery efficiency and increase heat recovery temperature. The program for technology to fit PEFC output to energy demand develops hot water supply systems provided with a hot water storage function for stable supply of hot water irrespective of the heat recovery conditions, and also with a back-up function with burners. The program also develops the PEFC system of fine load following characteristics, for which pure hydrogen is used as the fuel to allow the system to instantaneously follow fluctuating loads. The program for high-efficiency partial load operation technology studies a 1kW-class residential PEFC cogeneration system incorporating a power storage device for high-efficiency operation at partial loads, where the former operates in a high output mode while the latter absorbs fluctuating loads. Research and development was conducted of a technology for manufacturing an ultrathin polycrystalline silicon solar cell capable of efficiency enhancement and cost reduction earlier than the types of polycrystalline solar cells now available on the market. In this fiscal year, a silicon melt/solidification experimenting apparatus was built for manufacturing high-quality silicon ingots. Using an apparatus with its performance similar to the newly built one, a preliminary experiment was conducted involving high-purity silicon ingot manufacturing. In the experiment, boron was added to 75 kg of silicon for semiconductor devices so that its resistivity may be 0.5 ohm-cm. The silicon was melted in a quartz mold, and then subjected to unidirectional coagulation at 0.13 mm/min that started at the bottom to proceed upward. The result was a silicon ingot 44 cm times 44 cm times 17 cm (height). The ingot thus obtained exhibited 0.4-0.8 ohm-cm in resistivity distribution. Solar cells produced from the ingot showed a conversion rate of 16.9%. (NEDO)

The program for design/evaluation of high-strength, Nb-based solid solution alloys develops the Nb-based alloy reinforced with a solid solution comprising 5 to 30% of Mo and 5 to 15% of W, all by atom, simultaneously dissolved. The program for design/evaluation of high-strength, Nb-based composite materials confirms effectiveness of incorporating Si in a Nb alloy and separating silicide in the Nb-based solid solution alloy matrix as the combined mechanism of reinforcing the alloy. The program for creation/evaluation of Nb-based parts which withstand superhigh temperature finds that the discharge plasma method gives the structure, in a very short time, almost on a level with that given by the solution solidification method. The program for oxidation resistance improving technologies develops the electrochemical process for forming the oxidation-resistant coating film. Concerning the low ion exchange capacity thin membrane, the following were confirmed: in perfluorosulfonic acid with ion exchange capacity of 0.84-1.0, the lower the ion exchange capacity is, the greater characteristics of mechanical strength are improved; the optimization of membrane thickness makes the design which satisfies cell characteristics and mechanical strength characteristics possible. In the durability test by medium-/long-term continued operation using each of small unit cell and large unit cell, the results of the stable operation of 5,000 hours using S1102 and S1201Q membranes were obtained. About effects of methanol, changes were observed in creep characteristics and piercing strength in the test on the environmental cycle at -40 degrees C to 80 degrees C. Research and development has been made on improving quality of ingots for substrates, manufacturing high-quality thin type substrates, and making high-efficiency cells. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1999. In developing the high-quality ingot manufacturing technology, discussions were given on a method for assessing impurities and crystal defects by using the total reflection scattering type infrared tomography, and on the optimal solidifying and cooling conditions during the ingot manufacturing by using simulation calculation for solidification. As a result of analyses and discussions, such findings were found effective that the ingot should be solidified through making the solid-liquid interface shape flat, and the temperature falling rate in an ingot should be maintained constant. In developing the high-efficiency cell making technology, discussions were given on the optimal construction based on a simulation that assumes the light sealing structure using the RIE method, and on the optimal construction of polycrystalline silicon solar cells by using a device simulator (PCID). The important factors in achieving a conversion efficiency of 20% are the light sealing structure, surface passivation, and substrate thickness. (NEDO)

Through the observation of super spiral DNA fixed on a spermin or spermidine treated mica substrate by AFM (atomic force microscope), fixation of DNA without any deformation in solution was clarified, and visualization of the spiral structure of DNA were successfully achieved. Manipulation of Xe atoms adsorbed on an Si(111) surface was certainly possible by using STM (scanning tunneling microscope)/atom probe equipment. A nucleation mechanism in crystal growth was studied for various organic source-molecules/GaAs(001) surface systems, and formation of high-density nuclei on the GaAs surface was achieved by accelerating the translational energy of Ga material molecules up to 6eV or more. Ziegler- Natta catalysis important for industrial polymerization of olefin molecules was precisely analyzed by first-principle dynamic simulation. With an objective of decreasing silicon usage quantity for the purpose of reducing the solar cell production cost, development is being performed on an ingot cutting technology to cut a silicon ingot to Kerf loss of 150 {mu} m and thickness of 150 {mu} m, and in which the produced wafers can withstand the cell making. Investigations revealed that a wire saw is suitable as the cutting system, and the wire used must have a diameter of less than 120 {mu} m, and a strength of more than 3850 N/mm{sup 2}. A prototype wire was fabricated, whose diameter is 120 {mu} m, and in which the strength is distributed between 3870 and 4110 N/mm{sup 2}. It was found possible that a wire of 160 {mu} m can be used to slice an ingot having a cross section surface of 150 mm square and a length of 300 mm into a slice having a Kerf loss of 200 {mu} m and a thickness of 180 {mu} m. This wafer had the in-plane distribution of the substrate thickness at {+-} 12.5 {mu}, swell of 120 {mu} at maximum, and surface roughness of 5 {mu}. Making ten of these wafers into a cell resulted in a yield of 60%. The programs for development of the fuel supply system include studies on endurance of the elements, e.g., starting-up/shutting-down of the Ru/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} catalyst, using a microreactor, confirming that it is serviceable for at least 1,000 hours. The natural gas reformer is developed and operated, on a trial basis, achieving stable supply of steam and fuel, and thermal efficiency of 82.7%. The operation researches include development and operation of a 1kW class module, achieving the performance surpassing the FY 1999 targets (average cell voltage: 0.70V, output: 1.27kW) with a simulated reformate gas at an air utilization rate of 20% and current density of 0.3A/cm{sup 2}. This project is aimed at internationally cooperating in the R and D of industrial technology and improving industrial technology of Japan. For it, the following three technologies were investigated: 1) environmental preservation technology using biotechnology, 2) technology for effective use of unused hydrocarbon resource, 3) solid electrolyte fuel cell (SOFC) technology for high-efficient electric vehicles. In 1), bio-remediation is a choice as the result of trially using technologies for remediation of the environment polluted by pollutant, but it is not a technically completed one, but one which will be improved by trial and error. By the application of gene engineering, the use of gene recombination enables wide spread of decomposition genes. In 2), technical subjects were studied such as superheavy distillate, oil shale, coalhead methane and methane hydrate. In 3), designed were cylinder type and planar type SOFC of 850degC operation and 10kW output. Accumulation and weight of a total SOFC system are 81 liters and 100 kg in cylinder type and 136 liters and 200 kg in planar type. The vehicle can be equipped with the SOFC. 171 refs., 72 figs., 54 tabs.

With an objective to develop low-cost and high-efficiency hybrid thin film/sheet solar cells, research and development has been performed. This paper summarizes the achievements in fiscal 1999. The research is related to a hybrid construction, in which the upper cells of amorphous silicon thin film are formed on the lower cells bonded with micro-crystalline silicon thin film relative to a poly-crystalline silicon sheet. In the technology to form the upper cells, a pin-construction using amorphous silicon thin film made by using the plasma CVD process was adopted, whereas an open circuit voltage of 1.45V, a short circuit current of 13.6 mA/cm{sup 2}, and a conversion efficiency of 13.5% were obtained. In the technology to form the substrate for the lower cells, formation of flat silicon thin plate that can be peeled off was identified as a result of adopting the construction in which a graphite substrate is provided on a rotating cooling body of 12-prism type. With regard to the technology to bond and form the lower cells, electrical properties of hetero-bonded cells were discussed, and an open circuit voltage of 0.605V and a conversion efficiency of 14.3% were obtained as a result of enhancing the film quality and optimizing the film thickness. Survey/study were conducted of viability of an idea of the high efficiency power generation that combinedly use RDF from the refuse generated in Shizuoka/Yamanashi/Nagano prefectures and LNG from the LNG base in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. In the survey of raw materials for RDF, the present amount that can be supplied to RDF power generation was estimated at 280 t/d in RDF and 4,300 Kcal/kg or more in heating value. As to the RDF/LNG combination power generation, combinations of RDF200t/d + 25MW (capacity of gas turbine power generation) or RDF200t/d + 70MW seem to be appropriate. And, 30% or more of RDF power generation efficiency is made possible. In the study of economical efficiency, expenses born by local governments were calculated supposing that the difference between the unit price of power selling and that of power generation in power generation is born by RDF suppliers. As a result, the share becomes approximately 8,600-12,000 yen/refuse t in 15-year operation, and was found lower than that in the existing small-/medium-scale refuse incineration treatment. The combustion flue gas associated with the power generation business becomes approximately 300,000 Nm{sup 3}/h. The gas turbine fuel is natural gas, and RDF is good in combustibility. Therefore, the effect on the environment is expected to be small. (NEDO)

For the purpose of realizing low cost and high efficiency hybrid thin films/sheet solar cells, the R and D were carried out, and the FY 2000 results were reported. As to the formation technology of the upper cell, the following technologies were developed and the results contributory to the heightening of efficiency were obtained: technology for improvement of cell characteristics by gap widening of p layer, technology for optimization of formation conditions of i layer corresponding to the hybrid solar cell, technology for heightening of current by the intermediate ZnO layer just under the upper cell. Relating to the development of formation technology of high quality microcrystal thin films, it was indicated that the microcrystal silicon thin film had the conformity effective also for polycrystal silicon, and at the same time, the conversion efficiency of 12.8% and release voltage of 0.579V were obtained by the cell using the cast polycrystal board. In the thin film/polycrystal sheet hybrid solar cell in which all these technologies were integrated, the conversion efficiency of 12.0% was achieved, and the possibility was verified of achieving the target efficiency of 14% by further improvement of FF.
